Kinder Morgan cites time required to file for permits and regulatory approvals

The Trans Mountain expansion project could be delayed by several months, Kinder Morgan announced on Wednesday. As part of its third quarter report, the Texas-based company said “construction preparation activity is off to a slower start than planned.” Part of that is due “to the time required to file for, process and obtain all necessary permits and regulatory approvals.” Kinder Morgan said it’s looking at construction mitigation plans so it can maintain the current in-service date of December 2019. “All project planning and schedule mitigation efforts include cost management measures and spend control to maximize project returns, including a reduction in 2017 spending that has already been implemented,” reads the report. Should mitigation efforts fail, the project could be delayed by up to nine months, according to the company. Construction of the $7.4-billion pipeline project was scheduled to start last month. The project, however, has faced fierce opposition from the B.C. NDP, First Nations groups and environmental organizations. It’s also entangled in legal battles with municipalities, including Burnaby and Vancouver. The federal government approved the controversial expansion last November, following the National Energy Board’s recommendation in May 2016 that the project go ahead. The NEB attached 157 conditions to its approval.

Burnaby RCMP is sounding the alarm over Bitcoin scams after three separate local cases in the last month. One local resident was swindled out of $28,000 at the end of September and two other cases involved sums between $4,000 and $6,000, according to Sgt. Derek Thibodeau. “It’s relatively new to us,” he said, “and that’s why we’re trying to be proactive and get out in front of it just to alert the public.” In a new twist on an old con, fraudsters are posing as Canada Revenue Agency employees calling about unpaid taxes and threatening potential victims with arrest unless a Bitcoin payment is received immediately. In a variation on the theme, fraudsters pose as police officers and tell potential victims that one of their relatives is in custody and an immediate Bitcoin bail payment is needed for their release. The scams themselves are not new, according to Thibodeau, but this is the first time Burnaby RCMP has dealt with scammers Continued on page 10

He’s a pencil guy and a computer guy Founder ofVancouver Animation School finds success in teaching students around the world – all online By Cornelia Naylor
cnaylor@burnabynow.com
Long before he became the founder and CEO of Vancouver Animation School, Burnaby’s Mario Pochat was just a kid in Mexico City who liked to draw, like many an aspiring animator before him. But his professional career took off earlier than most. He got his first job – a three-year internship with Montreal-based Softimage – at the tender age of 15 after bringing a VHS tape of computer animations to a convention in the 1980s. Back then, he says, the “pencil guys” and the “computer guys” were still at war. The pencil guys, in the tradition of Walt Disney, were the traditional character animators using frameby-frame animation of twodimensional drawings. The computer guys, meanwhile, used software mostly to create things like moving, three-dimensional TV-news and advertising logos – and not much in the way of characters. “It’s just the arts versus technology, right?” Pochat says. As the two sides converged in an explosion of computer-animated movies and video games in the ensuing decades, however, Pochat says he maintained a handle on both. “I had a pretty unique position,” he says. “I’m someone who understands the art and someone who understands the technical
side. See, I’m not the best at these things, but I’m in the middle.” He’s also in the middle when it comes to teaching and doing – having both taught computer animation in a classroom and worked in some of the biggest studios in the industry, including Rainmaker Visual Effects, CIS Vancouver and Method Studios. In 2011, the 10-year Metrotown resident put all that knowhow into founding the Vancouver Animation School, which pulled up stakes on Vancouver’s Granville Island and moved to Burnaby’s Big Bend this summer. (The school celebrated with an open house on Sept. 22.) But don’t go there expecting to find a sprawling campus. The school is 100 per cent online, and its students and instructors live all over the world. The software used to connect them – a platform designed in-house called Edutisse – is one of the things that makes the school so unique. Its online interactivity simulates a studio setting more closely than a traditional brick-and-mortar classroom, according to Pochat, making it easier for grads to transition to careers in the real world. Courses at the school are also more specialized. “Typically, in schools, they’re very general even if you go for a certain applied degree,” Pochat says. At Vancouver Anima-
CONNECTED: Vancouver Animation School founder Mario Pochat demonstrates Edutisse, software developed by his online school to connect students and instructors from around the world and simulate the environment of a working animation studio. He says his online-only school was buoyed by the wave of millennials who started their post-secondary education in 2013. PHOTO CORNELIA NAYLOR tion School, students are focused on their choice of four areas (animation, concept art, visual effects or video games) from day one, making grads more industry ready right off the hop. The online school now has about 200 students and full B.C. Education Quality Assurance and Private Training Institutions Branch accreditation, but getting it off the ground was a test of faith early on. When he started working
on the idea in 2009, Pochat says accrediting bodies weren’t sure what to make of a 100 per cent online school. And once he had cleared those hurdles, it was tough to get parents of prospective students on board with the idea of a school with no physical classrooms to send their kids to. The tipping point came in 2013, Pochat says, when younger millennials, socalled digital natives, started their post-secondary ed-
ucation. “For us, the younger generation pushed us forward,” he says. “We’ve seen and experienced firsthand millennials, what they want, the younger generation, how they go to school. How things are really changing and shifting in education is huge.” The school now enrolls students from 20 different countries, including eight from Burnaby. With the school now in their backyard, local stu-
dents can come in for support if they need to, according to Pochat, but they rarely do. “We don’t teach from within the building at all because (our instructors) are in San Francisco,Vancouver, Montreal, U.K., NewYork, all these places,” Pochat says. Convicted drug smuggler wants to run for office B.C. Human Rights Tribunal will look into complaint that union is wrongfully denying him his right to run By Cornelia Naylor
cnaylor@burnabynow.com
A convicted drug smuggler’s complaint against a Burnaby-headquartered union will be heard by the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal despite an attempt to have the case dis-
missed. In January 2007, Perley Edmund Holmes, a former business manager with Iron Workers Local 97, was caught in Washington, just south of Osoyoos, trying to smuggle 62 kilograms of cocaine worth an estimated US $4.3 million into Canada.
After his conviction and spending eight years in jail in the U.S., his union membership was reinstated and he went back to work, according to B.C. Human Rights Tribunal documents. When union elections came up in 2016, however, the Ironworkers wouldn’t allow Holmes
to be nominated or run for office. In a complaint filed a year ago, Holmes alleges the union discriminated against him because of his conviction and calls on the tribunal to order the union to admit it discriminated against him, to stop discrimi-
nating against him, to allow him to run for office and to void the 2016 election. The union applied to have the case dismissed, arguing the complaint is outside of the tribunal’s jurisdiction and should be made Continued on page 4

Cops find load of drugs after pulling driver over for talking on his phone Cornelia Naylor
cnaylor@burnabynow.com
Don’t break the law while you’re breaking the law. That was the lesson some drivers got from recent Burnaby RCMP distracted driving enforcement efforts. A 28-year-old Vancouver man and his 53-yearold mom might have gotten away with driving 21 pounds of pot around Burnaby if the man hadn’t decided to use his phone while doing it. He was pulled over at Grandview Highway and Boundary Road at about 9:40 a.m. on Sept. 26, according to police. An officer noticed the smell of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle, and a search led to the seizure of 43 Ziploc bags of pot and $1,000 in cash. The mother-son duo now face charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking. Another man was pulled over for smoking pot while talking on his phone near Lougheed Highway and

Four people who shouldn’t have been driving at all because of driving prohibitions were also pulled over during the local Mounties’ recent distracted driving enforcement blitz. In all, Burnaby RCMP handed out 917 $368 distracted driving tickets to local drivers, all of whom also
got four points on their licences. “This enforcement showed some drivers are still not getting the message that driving distracted is as dangerous as driving impaired,” Panesar said. “You’re five times more likely to crash if you’re using your phone.

dismissed, tribunal member Walter Pylypchuk, clarified he was not deciding on the merits of Holmes’s case. But he rejected the local union’s argument that it had had no choice but to follow terms set out in the constitution of its parent organization and was therefore
not the proper target of the complaint. “The Respondent implemented that decision within British Columbia and the consequence of that implementation adversely affected the Complainant,” Pylypchuk stated in his Oct. 4 ruling. “…the Respondent
has an obligation before implementing a decision of the International made extra territorially to ensure that that decision is in compliance with British Columbia law.” A date for a hearing has yet to be set.

Opinion now OUR VIEW
Who cares about our planet’s future? Our governments won’t save us.That’s the conclusion we inexorably reach when considering the hurricanes, wildfires and, most terrifyingly, the complacency that has so far accompanied global climate change. Many cities and towns in B.C. are certainly trying to do the right thing by climate change. Burnaby has an extensive plan to boost the city’s energy efficien-
cy and protect local green spaces. In neighbouring New Westminster, the city has been very proactive, from boosting solar power opportunities to promoting and supporting energy-saving home retrofits. But, simply put, there are some things a city council can’t do. And what local governments can’t do, our federal leaders won’t do. Earlier this year, Prime
There are some things a city council can’t do Minister Justin Trudeau explained his energy policy thusly: “No country would find 173 billion barrels of oil in the ground and just leave them there.” The “I-betcha-you-
would-have-done-same!” philosophy is illuminating in that it avoids logic and morality. It’s pure rationalization. Of course, he added three buzzwords that are the equivalent of sterilizing the needle used for lethal injection: responsibly, safely and sustainably. According to a recent NASA study, our planet produced more atmospheric carbon dioxide in
2015 and 2016 than at any point in the last 2,000 years. With that in mind, we suggest there is no way to responsibly, safely and sustainably burn 173 billion barrels of oil. And to approve a pipeline that is running through a metropolitan area to a narrow waterway is simply foolhardy. For too long, environmental issues have been the property of liberal po-
litical parties. It’s time conservatives tried to wrest away an issue that should be inherent to their identity – conservation. As much as we care about balanced budgets and job creation, our leaders must ultimately be assessed on the ability of future generations to breathe the air and drink the water. Our governments can’t save us, but maybe we can save them.
MY VIEW BOB COX, JERRY DIAS, EDWARD GREENSPON
Why we need a thriving media On Sept. 1, an agency of the Canadian government directed nearly $100 million to support local television news. Suddenly, more local television reporters are working stories on more broadcasts across Canada. But why just television? Why not newspapers or digital-only publications? It’s the reporting of news that’s important, not the platform on which it resides. The answer is purely bureaucratic.Television is regulated by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, which collects a levy on the revenues of cable and satellite distributors and then redirects the funds into producing content deemed to serve the public good, such as television news. Other parts of the Government of Canada, supported by the same taxpayers, have so far resisted measures to bolster an industry that plays an essential role in our democracy, one that’s even explicitly written into the Charter of Rights. The situation is bad and getting worse. More and more newspaper jobs are disappearing – at least one in three since 2010 by our count – and newspaper closings in more than 200 federal ridings have loosened the social glue news provides to communities. These reporter-intensive organizations are the tributaries for much of the news about democratic institutions generated in Canada, both in print and online. Digital news startups in Canada, with a few
exceptions, so far have been unable to fill the growing deficit in reporting capacity. Please adjust the dial. There’s something wrong with this picture. This isn’t a good time to allow the weakening of news organizations. We are seeing in the United States the critical role newspaper companies, particularly The NewYork Times and TheWashington Post, are playing in keeping the public informed of deep stresses in their democracy. The classic relationship between whistle-blowers and reporters can’t work if the latter become an endangered species. In Canada, the threat is more acute because the market is smaller. Canadian daily newspapers have seen more than half their ad revenues – about $1.5-billion – bleed away over the past decade, most of it going to Google and Facebook, which together served up more than eight out of 10 digital ads in Canada last year. Unfortunately, they don’t invest in generating news. Meanwhile, as the sources of verifiable news dry up, fake news – designed to disorient and disillusion the public – proliferates. Making something up or simply distorting facts costs a fraction of real reporting.Whether for commercial, partisan, ideological or geopolitical reasons, it represents a direct assault on our democracy. Again, there’s something wrong with this picture. In many places, calling Continued on page 7

A bed of roses in Burnaby Local rosarians were beside themselves in January when the parks department approved a $90,000 plan to mark the city’s centennial with the planting of a permanent rose garden atop Burnaby Mountain. The plan had first been proposed by Mark Stockdale, a local rose enthusiast and four-time past president of the Vancouver Rose Society who grew more than 150 varieties at his Westridge-area home. The project called for the planting of 1,000 roses in a circular garden designed by architect Richard Sporns and maintained by city horticulturist Bill Bissett.

Opinionnow Canada needs the media
Continued from page 6 the mayor the day after council meetings for an account of what happened constitutes coverage of city hall. Even in provincial capitals, some governments go uncovered in between legislative sessions and fewer specialists work the corridors of power in Ottawa. From a public-policy point of view, this raises vexing questions. Nobody wants to give governments leverage over the reporters meant to hold them to account. That said, the CBC is both publicly funded and independent, so it’s not an impossible task. We see two problems that cry out for attention: getting more reporters on the ground and financing innovation so news producers can keep up with ever-evolving consumption habits. Last April, on the heels of The Shattered Mirror report on news, democracy and truth in Canada, the Public Policy Forum brought together about 40 news organizations and unions to propose solutions that would support employment of reporters and investment in innovation without sacrificing media independence or shutting out new competitors. Out of this process came a proposal to add a new component to the wellestablished Canadian Periodical Fund, one that would support journalism of a civic, or democratic enhancing, nature. This new Canadian journalism fund
would feature a pre-programmed formula to cover 30 per cent of the costs of reporting, creating an incentive to hire rather than fire reporters, and, critically, denying governments the discretion to play favourites. We have established a definition for who qualifies and an appeals process independent of government. As well, companies would be forbidden from diverting the funds to dividends, bonuses and debt payments. There are those who rightly worry any government involvement would compromise a free press. But a broke press isn’t much of a free press. Others contend it’s best to wait for news organizations to go bankrupt and then pick up the pieces. But once in bankruptcy court, it is the debt holders and not the public interest that is served, as we saw in 2010 when Postmedia emerged out of bankruptcy court with bondholders as owners and an unbearable burden of debt. Some say the companies seeking assistance are doomed in any case. That may be true, but established news companies and start-ups should be given five years to prove they can make a go of it.The alternative of more and more fake news and less and less reported news is antithetical to the precepts of a healthy democracy. Bob Cox is chairman of News Media Canada and publisher of theWinnipeg Free Press; Jerry Dias is national president of Unifor; Edward Greenspon is president of the Public Policy Forum.

pecting to be hit and, as he was, he instinctively crouched down and covered his head and face,” stated B.C. Supreme Court Justice Paul Walker in his ruling. The blow inflicted “significant injuries,” he said, including a fractured skull, deep lacerations and bone fragments, requiring many stitches. After hitting Rowe,WhiteBynoe swung at his son, who then ran away with White-Bynoe giving chase, according to Walker’s ruling. Rowe said he saw WhiteBynoe hitting his son three to four times on the back of his jacket with a machete before Rowe ran over and pulled him away, according to court documents. Rowe and White-Bynoe then fell to the ground and grappled, and Rowe sustained multiple cuts to his body before police officers from a cruiser parked nearby intervened. Continued on page 9

A 43-year-old Burnaby man is serving six months less a day in jail and two years on probation after fracturing his apartment manager’s skull with a metal baton and beating the apartment manager’s son with a machete at a New Westminster apartment building in December 2015. Shawn Ricardo WhiteBynoe was sentenced in B.C. Supreme Court last month after being convicted of one count of assault and one count of assault causing bodily harm in March. The conviction stems from an incident at an apartment building at 411 Eighth Street in New West on Dec. 18, 2015. The manager of the apartment, Michael Rowe had been talking to his 23-year-old son, Blaine Dunn, in front of the building at about 5 p.m. when
White-Bynoe walked out the front door and between them, muttering “Your time is coming” to Rowe under his breath, according to a Sept. 11 ruling posted online last Friday. White-Bynoe had been facing possible eviction from the building over a

City now Judge sides with Crown in sentencing for assault Continued from page 8 The Crown prosecutor asked for a jail sentence in the range of four to six months less a day and a two-year probation period. White-Bynoe’s lawyer argued his client should not go to jail, and, if he did, it should be for 90 days served on weekends. Among the mitigating factors noted by Walker during sentencing was the fact White – who emigrated from Barbados in 2002 – had lived in Canada without incident for 15 years and had no previous criminal record. Aggravating factors noted by the judge were that White-Bynoe appeared to accept only partial responsibility for assaulting Rowe
and continued to deny assaulting Dunn. Walker also noted WhiteBynoe appeared not to recognize “the manner and the means of his assault.”
He has not acknowledged that he has an anger management problem.
“He has not acknowledged the impropriety of using the baton and a machete in these assaults, let alone
possessing those weapons,” Walker said. “He has not acknowledged that he has an anger management problem. The principles of denunciation and deterrence are at the forefront of this case. Personal disputes are not to be settled by acts of violence.” Besides the jail term and probation,White-Bynoe was handed a 10-year firearm ban and ordered not to have any contact with Rowe or Dunn or to get within a two-block radius of 411 Eighth Street in New West. He was also ordered not to possess any weapon during his probation and to attend anger management and alcohol and substanceabuse counselling.

Unfortunately, once the Bitcoin is sent, it’s practically impossible to trace or recover, according to

Street dog’s life inspires documentary Tereza Verenca
tverenca@burnabynow.com
A Burnaby filmmaker wants to bring awareness to Chile’s stray dog population with a new documentary. In 2015, Montreal-born Thommy Morais moved to Ecuador for a year. It wasn’t too long after he noticed a large number of stray animals roaming the streets. Some reports suggest there are 2.5 million stray canines in Chile. “It is terribly bad. Some places are filled with dogs. It’s affecting other animals, it’s affecting people, it’s crazy,” he told the NOW. “We have some images that ... we almost don’t want to show the images.”
If you’re going to get a dog, it’s not just an object While abroad, Morais, who moved to Burnaby in January, met Chilean Thomas Hartung. Hartung had adopted a street dog named Popi and had started a blog calledViajando con Pulgas, which is Spanish for “travelling with fleas.” “At first it was just a blog,” said 23-year-old Morais. “The blog got a little bigger, got a lot of attention while travelling, lots of interviews, and then I came back to Canada and we talked about it, and we were like, ‘Let’s film more. Let’s do a documentary.’” Stories with Fleas was born. The doc, which is produced by Morais and directed by Hartung, follows Har-
tung and Popi. “We kind of show the contrast of how bad (the stray dog population) is, as well as showing Popi, that it’s possible to give a good life to a street dog. Then we visit shelters or just people that help dogs.We show what people do,” Morais said of the storyline. The hope is to bring awareness to responsible animal adoption. “A lot of people get a dog and they don’t take care of them. Unfortunately, they put them on the street. In South America, they don’t have the money like we do. There’s no SPCA or there’s no actual business taking care of animals that is funded by government,” he explained. “If you’re going to get a dog, it’s not just an object. You gotta be ready, make sure you have the financial (ability) to take care of it, just like a baby.” Morais still needs to film the second half of Stories with Fleas. He and a crew will be heading down south next month to continue their work. But before then, on Nov. 11, he’s hosting a fundraiser at The Great Bear Pub in Burnaby (5665 Kingsway), starting at 6 p.m. Money raised during the event will go toward supporting the documentary. Tickets are $20 and include a burger and a drink as well as a gift bag.To buy, email Morais at thommy morais@gmail.com or call 403-370-4245. Or you can get them at the pub, too. Oh, and if you’re a fan of the Netflix show, The 100, some of the cast members will be in attendance. Morais works on the set of the show as a dolly grip.

Contemporary dance work onstage at Shadbolt Centre Live dance is back at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. The Shadbolt Centre is presenting the latest instalment of the WorkSpace performance series later this month. WorkSpace III is onstage Oct. 26 to 28 at 8 p.m. nightly. WorkSpace is a performance series developed by the response contemporary dance company, allowing the company to perform excerpts of new dance work that it’s investigating. “Inspired by memories, past relationships and the relativity of time,WorkSpace III will endeavour to embody these ideas to a curated playlist of pop music,” a press release explains. This edition will feature the emerging dancers of the company’s apprentice program. It will also feature Sonic Self, a new solo work for Amber Funk Barton – founder and artistic director of the response – created by guest choreographer Heath-
er Laura Gray. “It’s the perfect show if you’re new to or have never been to a live dance production,” Barton says in a press release. “WorkSpace III has allowed me to reconnect with why I love dance so much; the marriage of movement and music as well as what it means to take one really good idea choreographically and turn it inside out to come up with endless scenarios and encounters for the dancers.” Barton adds that the night will be a showcase of young, talented dancers that are emerging on the Van-
couver dance scene. “I’m really excited about this show because I think everyone that comes is going to have a great time,” she says. “And I’m hoping that by the time the show ends, the audience will want to dance themselves.” WorkSpace III is onstage at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, 6450 Deer Lake Ave., running Thursday, Oct. 26 to Saturday, Oct. 28 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $36, or $15 for youth. Delve into the depths of data SFU statistician Liangliang Wang is used to whipping out mathematical formulas and algorithms while addressing audiences of applied mathematicians and computer scientists. She’ll be taking a different approach at a New West Boston Pizza this month at Café Scientifique, an informal discussion series featuring cutting-edge, award-winning SFU science researchers.Wang will discuss the relationship between statistics and the rapidly evolving world of data science by introducing some basic statistical methods used in data science. In a nutshell, why should people come to your presentation? I would say because data is everywhere. Also, everybody deals with data once in a while, so they need to know some basic methodology to do data analysis. What kinds of data do people have to deal with that they don’t think of
as data? Nowadays data could be any type of data. For example, images, that could be a type of data that everybody will deal with and video, audio – this could be data, or blog articles. All these are data, it could be some paragraphs of text; it could be some pictures or some video. These are some data that everybody will have.
strength
Let’s talk about science: Liangliang Wang, a statistician from Simon Fraser University, is speaking at a Café Scientifique event on Oct. 27.
Is this area more relevant today than it was 20 years ago? Definitely, because nowadays we have all kinds of technology, including mobile phones, so it’s much easier to collect data. … So the volume of data is increasing and also data types are quite different from the previous data.Typically we might organize our data as a table: we have several rows; we have several columns. That’s the typical data we analyze in traditional statistical methodologies. But nowadays, if you think about images, they’re quite different from a table of

numbers. … These kinds of non-structured data cause challenges for us. So nowadays we need to develop new methodologies that can deal with a large volume of data and also non-structured data. When you go to a party, what do you tell people that you do? Previously I said, “Oh, I’m a statistician.” And people say, “Ah, that’s close to an accountant,” or people

West Coast Liquor Company’s store is always stocked with spirits and bodies — including their customers. Lucky Manhas, manager of the West Coast Liquor Company’s Royal Oak location, doesn’t often see a quiet store. “We’re the largest store in the group,” he says, “and we’re definitely busy.” Located in an eclectic and diverse neighbourhood, West Coast’s Royal Oak store tries to stock something to please all tastes. “We have a large selection of products,” Lucky says. “We stock the value beers and wines for sure, but we also have more expensive products. Chances are, if you haven’t been able to find something in the government liquor store, we’ll have it on our shelves.” Home delivery is just another great service West Coast Liquor provides for its customers. “Order a minimum of $25 worth of wine, beer, or liquor and we’ll deliver between 4pm and 10pm, for less than the cost of a taxi fare.” While the online selection for home delivery is extensive, West Coast Liquor is happy to make substitutions as required. Choose any fine wine, craft beer, cooler, or pick from the diverse liquor selection and West Coast Liquor Company will put it all together and deliver it right to your door, usually within the hour. Along with home delivery and VIP loyalty programs, Lucky believes what keeps customers coming back is the knowledge and friendliness of his staff. “We provide a complete quality shopping experience, from instore to online and delivery” he explains. “Just about everyone on staff has taken some courses in
product knowledge that help with making product recommendations. West Coast Liquor’s philosophy is to offer a high level of customer service and knowledgeable help is just part of that.” Staff is trained to help customers find both what they’re looking for, and also products that they may not know about. “When someone comes in looking for wine, for example, we’re going to ask them if they had a certain country in mind,” Lucky says. “Narrowing it down to either white, red, or rose is the next step, and then we’ll ask about budget. If the customer has a dollar range, we’ll keep that in mind when making recommendations.” Lucky and his team at the Royal Oak store offer their own product suggestions based on what sells well and the latest wine or beer trends, but also throw in some personal recommendations. “We’re here to give top notch customer service,” Lucky says. “We go out of our way to make our customers happy. If they’re looking for something we don’t have, we’re more than happy to order it in for them.” Owned by Gibson Hospitality Inc., West Coast Liquor Company is open seven days a week at all locations. SMALL BIZ TALKS
WHAT’S HAPPENING? Vancity and the Burnaby Board of Trade are partnering for a half-day conference aimed at people who run small businesses. WHY? The event, dubbed Small Business Talks, is
in celebration of Small Business Week, which runs Oct. 16 to 20 in B.C. WHAT DOES THE EVENT INCLUDE? The half-day conference features three sessions on three different topics: LinkedIn for business, by
Kristin Vandegriend of Career Story; Managing your business structure and estate planning, Sabrina Pizzolato and Brendan Gallagher of Vancity; and Small business sales – Selling value, not price, Chris Hnatko of Trainwest Management and Consulting. WHAT ELSE? There will be a light breakfast and lunch provided, too.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? That’s the best part, it’s free. All you have to do is register. You can do so by emailing admin@bbot.ca or calling 604-412-0100.

Community HEALTH
Social connection is key to your personal health DavidicusWong HEALTHWISE
editorial@burnabynow.com
In a recent column, we recognized that the root cause of all the problems in the world is a false sense of self – the illusion of separateness and a sense of disconnection. With this polarizing mindset, we will always have war, terrorism, hunger, violence, abuse and crime. It takes a village to care for every person within our village. We share responsibility for the care of our planet and the well-being of every other person on this planet. What harms one harms us all. When we take from the world – and take from another – we are diminished. Social connection – having a sense of belonging and feeling close to others – is also crucial to your personal health. If you have a strong sense of connection with others, you’ll enjoy
higher levels of happiness, emotional wellbeing, greater self-esteem and better physical health. On the other hand, having a low sense of connection is a greater risk to your health than smoking, high blood pressure and obesity. Lacking a sense of belonging increases one’s risk for anxiety, depression and antisocial behaviour. What are the causes of our illusion of separateness? We can begin with how we see ourselves and our bodies. Our minds tend to hold a static concept of the self, ignoring the fact that the components of our bodies are in a state of constant change, renewal and aging. You would be hard pressed to find any cell in your body as old as your birth certificate. You are intimately connected to your environment. The material of your body is created, recreated and fueled by the food you consume. You are part of the
water cycle, and we all share the air that we breathe. Our brains produce a steady changing stream of thoughts, opinions and moods, and much of our suffering is the result of clinging and identifying to them.
Lacking a sense of belonging increases one’s risk for anxiety, depression and antisocial behaviour.
Thoughts and feelings of anger, fear and hopelessness further contract our sense of self and our sense of connection with others. If we see ourselves as separate bodies, competing with all others to get the
greatest advantage, make the most money and experience the most pleasure at the expense of others, we will enjoy the satisfaction of connection. We have to stop seeing “the other” as different and separate. Our narrowed, lazy minds are quick to affix labels that categorize and diminish other people in terms of colour, class or gender. Rather we must see “another” who is also an equal, feeling and thinking being. Though we may have different individual histories and experiences, we share the same basic needs, emotions and aspirations, and the greatest emotional need is to feel connection and belongingness. What are the remedies for disconnection? How can we foster deeper social connectedness? 1. ACKNOWLEDGE ANOTHER. When we are rushing
about and distracted in a crowded city, other people become nameless objects or part of the background. In appropriate situations, we can acknowledge each other’s presence with eye contact, a smile and a friendly greeting. It may make an elevator ride less uncomfortable and more pleasant than strangers looking at their own phones.
4. WHAT GOALS MIGHT YOU SHARE? Destructive unions share enemies, prejudices, hate and fear, pitting one side against another. This is the dividing fuel of extreme nationalism, racism and terrorism. Alternatively, how can we work together to help one another and our community? How can we be better together? What can we create synergistically? One of my greatest dreams is to be part of the creation of a community – a nation and a world – where we can say with love and honesty to every person we see, “You belong here.” We will all feel as equal and valued parts of a greater whole. 2. WHEN YOU TALK, DIALOGUE. Listen at least as much as you speak. Seek to understand. You’ll recognize the emotions we share and understand another’s story. 3. LOOK FOR YOUR CONNECTION. You have something in common with any person. We are all someone’s child, cousin, friend or soul mate. We are all imperfect but still worthy of love.We all have some redeeming qualities or noble aspirations.

O CANADA: Mayor Bill Copeland quickly discovered not all his constituents shared his passion for a united Canada after city council decided to fly the fleur-de-lis instead of the city flag outside city hall ahead of the 1995 Quebec referendum. The mayor and secretary Gail Starchuk braved a heavy downpour on Oct. 25 to pose with the flag, flown in a show of national unity before Quebecers voted to decide whether the province should separate from Canada. While the decision prompted calls from supporters, it also sparked numerous calls from outraged citizens, one of whom said council was elected to “look after the dog shit, street lights and sidewalks,” not questions of national unity. Burnaby forward draws big assist in TWU run
Senior Seina Kashima spearheads TrinityWestern’s attack in a record-setting season By Dan Olson
dolson@burnabynow.com
Studious, driven and yet still embracing the fun side of the game – Burnaby’s Seina Kashima is enjoying her role with the Trinity Western University Spartans. Being a major catalyst for the Canada West-leading women’s soccer team, Kashima works the giveand-go and drives a lot of the attack for the Spartans, who are on a current ninegame win streak. It’s propelled the Langleybased program from No. 10 to fifth in the national rankings, and leapfrogged them to the top of the table in

Canada West’s Pacific division. They can lock up a home playoff game with a win this weekend at UVic. Being a fourth year veteran and a player whom others look to means there’s pressure, but the Burnaby South alumna is adjusting as a key leader on and off the pitch. “It was definitely just knowing I had to perform well this year,” said Kashima of how she approached the season. “The way I play on the field will affect the way so many others play, and having younger players look up to you and knowing that if I’m choosing not to work, that will influence them. “I have to embrace this (leadership) role and play completely for the team, really just focusing on the team and what they need.” She’s certainly been a sparkplug, continuing on what she established over her previous three seasons with the Spartans. Having tasted various degrees of success over that span – including Canadian national finalists in her first season – Kashima doesn’t take any-
thing for granted, and sees this squad as having incredible potential despite being on the young side. This past weekend,Trinity Western steamrolled the universities of Regina and Saskatchewan by identical 5-0 scores, with Kashima registering four assists to give her eight on the season. It also put her career tally at 27 helpers, tying her with former Calgary Dinos’Tessa Miller for the Canada West record. Getting into the record books was a bit of a surprise for the soft-spoken future primary school teacher. “I didn’t know (the record) existed until right before I broke the Trinity Western record,” she recalled. “Someone came up to me and said ‘Hey, you’re about to break a record.’ I was like, ‘Oh.’ It was kind of a shock, and I didn’t really know what to think about it. “It’s been pretty cool, but it’s definitely a testament to each of my teammates who have been able to finish some passes that haven’t been all that great, and been able to make thing out of second place. It just speaks to how well the team’s been doing.” She also has four goals, equalling her total from a standout freshman debut in 2014. “Seina was our top recruit that year and basically stepped right in to a starting role,” noted head coach Graham Roxburgh, with Kashima earning Canada West Rookie of theYear and All-Canadian honours. “She has always had that threat, that potential and dangerous attacking mentality and basically it’s all coming together this year.” Trinity Western struggled to start 2017, dropping two of its first three games. But since being shutout 3-0 by Calgary on Sept. 16, the Spartans have been on fire, outscoring the opposition 34-0 in nine straight wins – with last week’s victory over Saskatchewan the 200th of Roxburgh’s U Sports career. The cold beginning for a program that has been a perennial Canada West challenger was an eye-opener. “It was kind of like, ‘Who do we want to be?’ Did we want to be a team that just wilts under pressure in big

games and sorts of disappears when we get scored on, or do we want to be a team that didn’t let anyone near our net and just continues to battle and fight for every point,” she said. “I think after Calgary we sort of all came together, it was like ‘this isn’t good enough, we need to be better.’That was definitely our adversity.” She credits her evolution as a leader to former teammates like Isabella Di Trocchio – a Burnaby North alumna – and Liverpool product Jessica King. Kashima’s also happy to be part of Trinity’s Burnaby connection, joined by junior Lauren Ehrhardt and sophomore Jessica Filippelli. “We love it.We definitely call ourselves the girls over the bridge. It’s always a lot of fun to have other girls
from Burnaby here, just be able to hang out, the places we like and things we like. It’s always fun having those girls here with me,” she said. A South Burnaby metro product, with stops at various places including the Whitecaps elite program and Team B.C., Kashima draws a lot of satisfaction in helping get her teammates into a good scoring chance. The glorious game is built on the shoulders of 11 players on the field, and burying the ball in the opposition’s net is a major step in climbing the ranks. “She’s learned to handle the attention and pressure really well,” said Roxburgh. “I’ve just really seen her grow in her team-first mentality, and that’s probably been the biggest reason why she’s been so successful
this year.” The end goal is a U Sports appearance that starts with a win. What will make it all the more special is sharing it with her fellow Spartans, said Kashima.
“Scoring goals is always a plus, but it’s also amazing to set up your teammates and help them finish it off and see their excitement when they put it in the net,” she said.
