Charge laid in death of city woman 60-year-old accused and 61-yearold victim were good friends Cayley Dobie staff reporter

A 60-year-old Maple Ridge woman is facing a second-degree murder charge in relation to the death of a Burnaby woman last year. Trudy Gail Hunter was arrested on Friday and charged with second-degree murder for allegedly killing 61-year-old Burnaby resident Christina Docherty last December. Hunter was in provincial court in Vancouver on Monday morning. The murder charges stem from a call Burnaby RCMP received on Dec. 2, 2013. Officers discovered Docherty’s body in an apartment in the 4900 block of Hastings Street shortly after 4:30 p.m. The department’s major crime unit determined the death was suspicious and called in the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, which took over the case. “From the beginning stages of the investigation we wanted to speak with witnesses, with persons of interest, with suspects who may shed some light on what the motive was for this homicide,” Sgt. Jennifer Pound, spokesperson for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said at a press conference on Monday. According to Pound, Docherty was known to police prior to her murder. The accused, however, was not known to police and does not have a criminal record. Pound couldn’t say whether police had ever had any contact with Hunter in the past. “Unless there’s a criminal record on file, we can’t reveal any history on what that individual was up to. I can tell you that it was an exhaustive investigation,” she added. Murder Page 4

Dumping ground: A derelict foundry in South Burnaby that is considered an unsightly property will be torn down by the City of Burnaby. The teardown will be billed to the site owners.

City to clean up foundry site Jacob Zinn staff reporter

City of Burnaby staff have been authorized to enter the premises of an abandoned foundry that mysteriously went up in flames earlier this year and has since become a popular dumping ground. On Monday, city council approved recommendations of a city manager’s report to allow staff onto the Globe Foundry property, located at 7647 Willard St., to bring it into compliance with Burnaby’s unsightly premises bylaw. The foundry caught fire in January and has remained untouched in a dilapidated state ever since, with trash

piling up all over the site. “It concerns me that we have this situation down there, and it’s been going on for a number of months,” said Coun. Nick Volkow. The site is considered contaminated by the Environment Ministry and has a history of issues, including WorkSafeBC violations, outstanding debts and two deaths in a trailer on the property in May 2013, which the report attributed to the use of a gas heater in a confined space. Since November, the city has received five separate complaints regarding the unsightliness of the property. As reported by the NOW in March, area residents raised concerns that the foundry – run

by the Ewasiuk family from the 1940s until late 2011 – could degenerate further or become a haven for homeless people or pyromaniacs. “It seemed to attract people who like to cause trouble, dump garbage and set fires,” said Riverside resident Shawn Wade. “We don’t want it to become a theme park for arsonists. “The reality is a lot of stuff has been dumped on that site for a number of years. Remediating that site will be difficult and very expensive,” he added. “Whoever takes on that site will have a big bill on their hands.” The report notes that the city has had no response from the owners of the

Chevron refinery opens new fire hall Jennifer Moreau staff reporter

Burnaby’s Chevron refinery is opening a new fire hall – away from the storage area for refined oil products. The move marks a departure from the old fire hall, which was located in a seismically unsound building inside the company’s tank farm in North Burnaby. “I’m so excited,” said Mike Ward, the chief for Chevron’s private fire department. “This is the first really true fire hall this facility has had.” The new fire hall will have several additional safety features, including a new exhaust system (to funnel fumes out of the hall) and an additional compressor to fill breathing apparati. The hall also has a room so the firefighters can fill their own extinguishers, and there’s a large backup generator for power outages. Chevron has had its own onsite fire department for decades, but it was housed in an old maintenance building that was not “earthquake proof,” Ward said. Chevron has two large but separate pieces of property on the Burrard Inlet: Area 1, which is the storage facility for refined products, and Area 2, which is the actual refinery to the east. The original fire hall was located inside Area 1, but the new incarnation is about 1.5 kilometres down Penzance Drive, exactly halfway between Area 1 and 2, Ward explained. According to Ward, Chevron decided to

The firefighters are usually previous Chevron workers who are familiar with the facility but have received special training to fight chemical fires, Ward explained. Chevron can handle a “small event,” Ward said, but may call on the city’s emergency responders if need be.

Murder: 60-year-old Maple Ridge woman charged in death continued from page 1

Hunter was arrested at her residence in Maple Ridge on Friday without incident. Pound said that while the specifics of what motivated the crime won’t be released at this time, it appears that prior to the murder Hunter and Docherty were good friends. “It was linked to the drug trade,” she says. “The victim was involved in lower level trafficking, and that may or may not have had a play in what took place inside the residence.” Cause of death is not being released at this time, and Pound said the circumstances surrounding Docherty’s murder are still being confirmed. “We are still looking to confirm a lot of details, but I can tell you that the evidence we have does support charges of seconddegree murder,” she said. Senior warns about scammer in Burnaby staff reporter

A Burnaby senior who fell victim to a scam is warning other seniors in the city to be leery of who they open their doors to. Several weeks ago, a man knocked on Eileen Finley’s front door on Gilley Avenue, where she and her husband have lived for the past 50 years. The man politely explained to her that he was in the neighbourhood to refuel equipment at a construction site a few doors down but the fuel had been siphoned from the tanks and he didn’t have any credit cards or cash with him to buy some more. He asked to borrow $40 from her and before she knew it, she was handing him two $20 bills as he promised to pay her back later that day. But the man never returned that day, and when he didn’t come by the next day, Finley knew she had been the victim of a scam. “I knew right away when he didn’t come back the next day,” she said. “But he came back again a week later, can you believe it?” The second time the man came to the door, both Finley and her husband answered. Finley says she figured he was finally back to return the $40 he had borrowed but instead, he told the couple all

he had on him was a $100 bill and that if they gave him $60 he could go get change for them. But Finley wasn’t fooled a second time. She says she ended the conversation immediately. Finley described the scammer as South Asian and middle-aged. He was dressed in dirty construction-style clothing and was wearing muddy gumboots. Because of how he was dressed, she assumed he was working with the construction crew two doors down from her home on Gilley Avenue and felt he could be trusted. Staff Sgt. Major John Buis says this type of scam is relatively common and most often targets seniors. “We do hear about it on a regular basis, but most people are too embarrassed to tell us,” he says. Buis says the police have a hard time investigating and dealing with this type of scam because it is essentially a civil matter in that the scammer is “borrowing” money from their victim. “We can inform people and we can put out an advisory,” he says. “What they (the victims) can do is they can report it to us and then, if we get other ones, then we can dig into it.” Anyone looking to report such a scam can contact the Burnaby RCMP at 604-2947922.

ing B.C. jobs, while protecting health and public safety.” Wait a minute … many of the negative effects of alcohol on both health and public safety are very well understood. How exactly does freer and easier public access to alcoholic beverages – hard liquor will now be available, as well as beer – protect health and public safety? And somewhere in all that, we’ve missed the implications of adding children into the mix – there’s no discussion of the effects of direct exposure of chil-

dren to alcohol, as they get to sit beside their moms and dads drinking in public. Relaxation of liquor laws implies public approval of increased alcohol consumption, and, worse, this draws children in further. We’re wondering how many more charitable organizations will have to organize more open and modernized beer garden events so they can raise funds to help alleviate some of the social problems that our new laws might exacerbate.

Is democracy dying in Canada? IN MY OPINION

H

as our political system broken down to the point where it threatens democracy itself? That grim scenario is raised in a new book that suggests the political system, at the federal level at least, has deteriorated into a cynical, out-of-touch process where a tiny group of individuals exert control at every turn and leave everyone else feeling disillusioned and almost irrelevant. Titled Tragedy in the Commons: Former Members of Parliament Speak Out About Canada’s Failing Democracy, the book paints a sobering picture of a federal political arena that has increasingly, largely because of the actions of those in it, strained its credibility with the very people it is supposed to serve. While some of the authors’ conclusions (and solutions for fixing the problem) can certainly be challenged, the book does raise some relevant issues for our country’s other political systems, notably at the provincial level. The book’s authors, Alison

Loat and Michael MacMillan, conducted more than 80 interviews with former members of Parliament to gauge what they had learned from their years spent serving in the House of Commons. It is somewhat dispiriting to discover that many of them left federal politics feeling disillusioned and even embarrassed by their experiences. Many of them cite various reasons for these feelings: the power wielded over them by political leaders, “back office forces” and the political parties themselves, a lack of resources to do their job and the insistence they follow the party “line,” no matter what. Now, I’ve often found that some rookie politicians who excitedly enter government (or Opposition) can quickly feel an overwhelming sense of disappointment when they discover their political careers don’t turn out to be quite as they had imagined going in. A big part of the problem is the harsh traditions and realities of our parliamentary system itself. There is little equality in it, for example, as the government side holds so much more power than the Opposition parties. As well, there are huge power gaps between backbenchers and cabinet ministers. There is also a childish and phony nature to the system. Our Democracy Page 7

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Signs of positive growth in city Dear Editor:

Dramatic incidents and reactions to these are often what get our attention and are covered by the media. This past Friday, April 25, I witnessed something many folks in our community may have missed the significance of … the sound of excited children from Windsor Elementary School who were out participating in their 100 Bucket Challenge Neighbourhood Cleanup. It was their happy voices that drew my attention to them working their way up our cul-de-sac as they were doing their best to put the polish on our neighbourhood. The remarkable thing is that 10 years ago ours

was a neighbourhood with such a level of obvious crime that residents avoided being out and about as most people would normally be. Area residents working with our city, all levels of government and Burnaby RCMP have led to a remarkable evolution to our neighbourhood becoming a healthy community with residents and visitors enjoying an increasingly vibrant community. It speaks volumes that so many, right down to our elementary school students, are doing their part of building our community and is a strong sign of the continuing positive growth we can look forward to in our community. We are all a part of positive growth. Diane Gillis, president, Kingsway Imperial Neighbourhood Association

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR What were you thinking? Dear Editor:

I really must question the editorial decision to allow the uncensored use of the f**k word in her newspaper, knowing as she does that many youth and children will see this as a condonation of its use. Nowhere in the story is it suggested that, had Mr. Hussein opened the door when police arrived, his door would not have become unhinged. Oh, and does anyone really blame the bus driver for refusing to allow this man on his bus? They should have called him a taxi, nor is it our responsibility to pay for his fare home. As noted, it is Mr. Hussein’s right, and indeed duty, to place a complaint to the proper public complaints commission. Why the media feels it their duty to defend some guy’s claims as gospel, is beyond me – especially given his past record. I will say that I find those who supply illegal drugs to those addicted to same, to be one of the lowest forms of life on earth – even while claiming they did it because they got mixed up with the “wrong people.”

Cry me a river! Larry Bennett, Burnaby

Where is our MLA’s voice? Where is Richard T. Lee? Many citizens of North Burnaby are sufficiently concerned over the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion proposal to attend information sessions and public events organized by groups like BROKE (Burnaby Residents Opposed to Kinder Morgan Expansion). Our federal representative (MP Kennedy Stewart) continues to be a strong advocate for the interests of the citizens of North Burnaby. Burnaby’s mayor and council are working hard to inform their constituents and to protect their interests from the risks associated with export of dirty oil through Burnaby neighborhoods. Where is Richard T. Lee’s voice? I believe he is collecting a paycheque to represent the interests of the residents of North Burnaby. I believe he is personally opposed to the expansion of oil export through Burnaby. Whose interests is he representing in this matter? Larry Myers, Burnaby

Democracy: Where are we going? continued from page 6

MPs (and MLAs) are subject to silly forms of discipline (go sit in the back!) for daring to question the party line, and question period is often simply political theatre where politicians are more actors (some worse than others) playing to the cameras than anything else. Finally, real naked political power resides in the leader’s office. Always has, and (unless the system undergoes profound change) it always will (at least in a majority government). How much power often depends on the leader in the office. There is widespread evidence of the strict controlling nature of Prime Minister Stephen Harper when it comes to not only wielding power in government, but over the political system itself (witness the ongoing controversy over big changes to federal voting laws). But while Harper may have taken the leader’s office penchant for control to new heights (or

Saturday, May 3, 2014

Dear Editor:

lows, depending on your point of view), he’s hardly the first prime minister to consolidate power in his office. Pierre Trudeau, Brian Mulroney and Jean Chretien were hardly known for their magnanimous views towards the Opposition or even their own caucus (Trudeau once famously labelled MPs as “nobodies”). However, the book’s authors make the compelling case that what we are witnessing is the steady slide of public confidence in political institutions and the people who run them precisely because things like consolidating power in the hands of so few rarely ends well. In B.C., our premiers have exerted control over government to varying degrees. The legendary W.A.C. Bennett, for example, ran his caucus with an iron fist and micromanaged to the point of personally approving all long-distance phone calls (even in the civil service). More recently, Gordon

Campbell had his hands in all parts of government and consolidated power in his office to a great degree. His successor, Christy Clark, has been much more willing to delegate authority to her ministers and shows little evidence these days of being interested in all the small details (or even actually visiting the socalled Corner Office in the capital). While many of the assertions of the ex-MPs interviewed for his book may be dismissed as sour grapes, there’s no question that collectively they all point to an alarming erosion in the health of the country’s most important democratic institution. The steady decline in voter turnout is further evidence of that. While at times ambitiously idealistic and even naive in its analysis, Loat and MacMillan’s book shows much change is needed, and not just in Ottawa. It’s clear they’re onto something. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global B.C.

Julian backs Horgan Jennifer Moreau staff reporter

The provincial NDP’s sole leadership candidate now has the support of Burnaby-New Westminster MP Peter Julian. Julian and Vancouver Kingsway MP Don Davies announced Tuesday they have thrown their support behind Horgan. “I’ve followed John’s career since he was first elected, and I’ve been very impressed with his dedi-

cation and energy,” Julian said in a media release. “He has the depth and experience to form a government that provides the balance we need to create jobs and protect the environment.” Horgan is the MLA for Juan de Fuca and has been in office since 2005. According to his campaign messaging, he’s trying to strike a balance between developing resources and creating jobs, while protecting the environment. Horgan

will likely be proclaimed the NDP’s new leader on Thursday, May 1, unless someone joins the race at the last minute. After Mike Farnworth bowed out in early April, Horgan was left as the only contestant in the B.C. NDP’s leadership race to replace Adrian Dix, after the party’s loss in the last election. Burnaby MLAs Kathy Corrigan, Raj Chouhan and Jane Shin have all endorsed Horgan as well.

Two fires put out in the city Jacob Zinn staff reporter

Burnaby firefighters were kept busy last week, dealing with two blazes in the city. Early Thursday afternoon, the Burnaby Fire Department responded to a fire at a highrise building in the 7200-block of Mary Avenue. The fire took place in an old garbage chute of the building and was put out quickly by fire crews. “The smoke went up the chute like a chimney and filled the building with smoke,” said Assistant Fire Chief Scott Wren. “We were there probably for a couple hours cleaning up the smoke, but there was no damage to the building and nobody injured.

“There was a second alarm on that initially because of the smoke, but once we figured out what was going on, we got downgraded. It was very minor, actually.” Then, around 4 a.m. Friday, the fire department responded to a fire at an apartment building at 5712 Irmin St., which caused smoke damage to one unit. “It was contained to a single unit – it was a kitchen fire,” said Wren. “There was quite a bit of damage to the one suite. “They were lucky to contain that to the one suite. The guys knocked it down really quick.” Wren said the woman who lived in the unit is being looked after by emergency support staff.

BCA names its team for November elections Parks commissioner named to the school board slate

Seven incumbents back in the hunt for councillor positions The Burnaby Citizens Association has officially endorsed school trustee James Wang to run for Burnaby city council in this November’s municipal election. At the group’s nomination meeting – held Saturday at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown James Wang Hotel – Wang received in council race the majority vote for the spot held by Coun. Richard Chang, who is not seeking re-election this fall. Wang edged out Burnaby library board member Katy Alkins-Jang for the nod.

He will run for council alongside incumbent nominees Mayor Derek Corrigan and councillors Pietro Calendino, Sav Dhaliwal, Dan Johnston, Colleen Jordan, Anne Kang, Paul McDonnell and Nick Volkow. For two consecutive Derek Corrigan elections, the Burnaby seeking fourth term Citizens Association has swept all city council and school trustee seats. As well, Corrigan is currently serving his fourth straight term as mayor. – Jacob Zinn

Burnaby’s school board slate for the November civic election promises to be another crowded one. The Burnaby Citizens Association nominated a full complement of candidates at a nomination meeting Saturday. All but one BCA incumbent on the Baljinder Narang Burnaby board of edu- running again cation will run again in November. Trustee James Wang will run for city council instead. Parks commissioner Katrina Chen

was acclaimed to take Wang’s place on the trustee ticket. Besides Chen, BCA’s candidates for the November election are Baljinder Narang, Ron Burton, Harman Pandher, Gary Wong, Larry Hayes and Meiling Chia. Ron Burton In 2012, Burnaby running again boasted more trustee candidates, 23, than any other city in B.C. except Chilliwack. TEAM Burnaby has said it will name its slate in July. – Cornelia Naylor

Festival celebrates Chinese music

Burnaby musicians part of first Sound of Dragon Festival Julie MacLellan staff reporter

Jin Zhang can remember when the Chinese music scene in Vancouver was nearly invisible – when just a handful of amateur musicians would get together in Chinatown to perform on their traditional instruments. These days, professional Chinese music is thriving – so much so that it has inspired a new festival celebrating Chinese music in all its forms. The Sound of Dragon Music Festival runs May 9 to 11 in Vancouver, with leadup events in the preceding week – including a kick-off concert at the Shadbolt Centre here in Burnaby on May 5. Zhang is one half of a Burnaby couple – with partner Jun Rong – that’s involved in the festival. Zhang may be best known to local audiences as the conductor of the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra, but he’s also an acclaimed composer and conductor of the VBC Huayi Music Production Choir. The festival will feature three world premieres of Zhang’s compositions. The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra – which is co-presenting the festival – will be premiering a new arrangement of one of Zhang’s pieces in the opening Friday night concert May 9. Originally composed for trio, it’s been arranged for full orchestra with percussion soloist. Another of his pieces will be performed by the duo of Rong and harpist Lani Krantz in a Saturday concert. Zhang will also take to the stage as conductor of the choir – a performance that will feature another premiere of his work. He laughs that, as a composer, the hard work is behind him now – and he can sleep again. When he’s in the middle of working on a new piece, he says, that’s not the case. “When you wake up, immediately your mind will go to your music,” he says. He’s pleased to be showcasing his work with the choir. “The choir is very different from other choirs,” he says, noting it specializes in Chinese folk songs, with some acting and costumes. “Most of the works are from my arrangements.” Rong, meanwhile, will bring her skill on the erhu – for the uninitiated, a traditional two-stringed instrument – to the stage in both the concert with harpist Lani Krantz and as a guest musician with a Taiwanese orchestra that needed extra players to fill out its ranks. Both are pleased to be taking part in the festival to share their passion for Chinese music with the city at large. Zhang notes that the Chinese music scene has changed a great deal since he left China for Vancouver in 1990. “The community for Chinese music was very little,” he says. “There were no professional players, only community players.” Which meant, he notes, that the general public wasn’t exposed to the real capabilities of the traditional Chinese instruments. But, as the political situation in China – and then Hong Kong and Taiwan – drove emigration to new heights, professional musicians started coming in larger num-

residents. They’re part of the Sound of Dragon Music Festival, which has a preview concert at the Shadbolt Centre May 5. bers. “People started to realize that these instruments can do much more than they thought,” he recalls. He points out that Chinese folk music is different from that of nearly any other country in that all its musicians study in serious music schools. “Folk musicians in other countries, they don’t really study in music school,” he points out. Zhang, a native of Beijing, first studied at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. He started out playing piano and erhu – he really likes to write for erhu, he notes, since he has played it for so long – but later changed his focus to conducting. He spent two years studying in Japan, having a chance to learn from masters Kazuyoshi Akiyama and Seiji Ozawa. He says he was fortunate to make connections fairly quickly once he moved to Canada. He found the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra in 1993 when they held auditions for a new conductor – a post

he won and still holds some 21 years later. He notes that he and others who arrived in Canada at around the same time helped to establish a Chinese music community – so that when Rong arrived a decade ago, it was much easier to establish herself. “I think I’m lucky,” says Rong, who moved to Canada because a friend did, and because she wanted to try out a new For a kind of life. video, She, too, is formally trained – she scan began playing the erhu at age nine, with Layar under the tutelage of her father, who was a professor. By age 12 she was studying at the conservatory in Beijing, and she forged a career as a performer and teacher. She’s grown as a musician since coming here, she says, because she’s been able to meet musicians from many other countries, playing styles of music she had only ever seen on TV. “Here I can play with real musicians from different countries,” she notes. She’s in demand as an erhu teacher, and she says the instrument itself is growing in

popularity. Zhang notes with a laugh that they don’t have to explain what the erhu is nearly as much as they used to. “Now we don’t have to say, ‘it’s a twostringed Chinese violin,’” he says. “Erhu is pretty popular.” He points out that, of all the traditional Chinese instruments, it’s the most accepted in Western music – even well-known film composer John Williams has incorporated it into his movie scores. Local audiences will have a chance to experience the full diversity of Chinese music in the Sound of Dragon Festival, which will showcase everything from ancient to contemporary music, jazz and world fusion in solo, chamber and orchestral performances. There’s a preview concert on Monday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts (see www.vi-co.org for details), and the festival opens Friday, May 9 at the Roundhouse Community Centre in Vancouver. here is no reason frailty has to be a natural part of getting older. With a simple exercise program – even in your home – you can retain your vitality, strength, energy and sense of well-being.

By the time we’re 85, almost one-quarter of the current generation of seniors will be described as “frail” – thin, weak and slow-moving. Frailty can lead to increased risk for poor health outcomes, falls, dis-

Exercise is key to improving seniors’ health … from pg. 12 the progression. There are three important ways to delay frailty and functional decline: good nutrition, social interaction and of course, exercise. These age-related challenges have little to do with how many candles are on the your birthday cake and much to do with exercise – which helps prevent the loss of muscle strength, mass and quality; and lack of activity.

Maybe you used to play tennis twice a week, and then were sidelined by your knees. Or you used to golf but your back could no longer handle the twisting. And now that the kids are all grown up and out of the house, maybe you spend more time on the couch with the remote, or on a chair in front of the computer. Society has caught on that seniors are an increasingly important consumer

group, so there are many options for classes or programs in our communities geared specifically towards seniors, such as yoga, Pilates, aerobics and swimming. In spite of this, many seniors still feel uncomfortable about exercising in public. Fortunately, there are many safe, simple exercises that can be done at home by almost anybody, at any age. Home-based exercises

can improve strength, balance and mental health. Simple activities such as gardening and walking can supplement an exercise program to increase muscle strength and balance. Adding strength training with light weights can improve upper body strength and prevent osteoporosis. Exercises can even be done in a chair. A great online resource is an exercise program specially designed for older

adults that can be done in the comfort and privacy of your home www.senior exercisesonline.com. Adult children or grandchildren have a role to play in helping their senior relatives avoid the very real hazards that increasing frailty can pose. Help with using DVDs or providing them with pictures and instructions for an exercise program, are a couple of examples. By motivating them

to sustain some sort of program until it becomes a way of life, will result in improved muscle strength and balance. That in turn will lead to an improved sense of well-being and confidence to stay actively involved in the community, and ultimately out of the hospital. Dr. Park is a family physician in White Rock and the program medical director for the home health program for Fraser Health.

Students show off local talent LIVELY CITY

Julie MacLellan

ip-hop artist Jahlil Dulay from Burnaby Mountain Secondary came out on top at the Burnaby’s Got Talent show April 23. The show attracted more than 300 people out to the Michael J. Fox Theatre to watch 16 of the most talent student acts from Burnaby’s eight public high schools – all chosen after winning their own schools’ talent shows. Runners-up were vocalist Harrison Park from Byrne Creek Secondary, dancer Joshua Fernandez from Alpha Secondary and guitarist Mark Virginillo from Cariboo Hill Secondary. Besides being a showcase of student talent, the event was also a fundraiser for the Burnaby Children’s Fund – raising a whopping $3,600 through ticket sales, door raffle, silent auction and concession. The money will help provide food, clothing and medical aid to local families in need. The event was organized by the district student advisory council. “To think that all our efforts amounted to such an amazing contribution to the community is just an astounding thought,” said Thalia Lang, a Grade 12 student from Burnaby North who serves as this year’s council president, in a press release. “I am immensely proud of (the

council) for their dedication to this year’s fundraiser, and I cannot express the gratitude I feel to work alongside such a driven group of students.” Guest judges for the occasion were concert pianist Tami Rizzo, actor Deni Delory and Rogers Arena events manager Patrick Urekar.

Call for sculptors

Are you a sculptor? The Burnaby Arts Council has issued a call for submissions for an upcoming sculpture show, Bring It Together: With Sculpture. The exhibition is set to run Aug. 16 to Sept. 6. Submission applications will be accepted until May 30. Bring it Together is a juried group exhibition that will be held in the arts council’s Deer Lake Gallery. “We are looking for 3-D work that will be installed in the gallery or on the Burnaby Arts Council grounds. We are excited to see submissions of sculptural work, installation work, and all 3-D objects that you class as sculpture,” the arts council website says. “We are excited to populate the grounds with outdoor sculpture, as well as fill the gallery with provocative works that can be installed on plinths, on the floor and from our wire hanging system.” It’s open to all artists and all forms of 3-D work. To apply, check out all the details at www. burnabyartscouncil.org – look under Deer Lake Gallery and 2014 Calls to Submissions, or call 604298-7322 or email info@ burnabyartscouncil.org.

Where’s the best place to jack up a pickup? CLICK & CLACK TALK CARS

Ray & Tom Magliozzi

Dear Tom and Ray: My Ford F-150 owner’s manual points out that there are certain “jack points” for the front and rear axles. I had a puncture in the sidewall of a rear tire, so the tire needed to be replaced. The local tire dealer jacked up the rear of the truck by the pumpkin – the rear differential. I pointed out that the owner’s manual says NOT to jack the vehicle by the rear differential. The dealer said they “do it all the time, and it does not make any difference.” Please clarify for me. Thanks. – Mike TOM: My guess is that Ford’s advice is geared toward you, Mike, the owner of the vehicle. And it assumes you’ll be using the jack that came with the truck to change a tire. RAY: That jack is small and really is for emergency use only. It’s designed to lift up only one corner of the vehicle, because that’s all it needs to do to allow you to swap out a tire. TOM: So Ford, and every other manufacturer, creates jack points near each of the wheels. Those are

reinforced spots that can handle the full weight of that corner of the car. RAY: They don’t want you to jack up the car using some other point that’s not reinforced, because if your improvised jack point fails and the top of the jack punctures the vehicle, the truck could come down on top of you. And that’s no fun. TOM: But if you have a hydraulic floor jack that’s capable of lifting the whole

truck, then there are other points you can use, if you know what you’re doing. RAY: This dealer did know what he was doing. The “pumpkin” (the rear differential that looks kind of like a pumpkin, that sits in the middle of the rear axle) is designed to carry the full weight of the truck when the truck is on the ground. If it couldn’t, the axle tube would break. So we know it can carry the weight of the truck when it’s in the

Much improved: Captain Peyton Lupul, in green, led the Burnaby Lakers into the 2014 B.C. Junior Lacrosse League season with a lot of renewed direction and vigour against the Coquitlam Adanacs on Sunday.

Jrs. return to form despite loss to A’s Tom Berridge sports editor

One could tell from the first shot on goal that the Burnaby Lakers had turned a page on their worst-ever junior A lacrosse season. After finishing 2013 with an abysmal 1-20-0 record and a club in disarry, the new-look Lakers surprised everyone in attendance, including the defending league champion Coquitlam Adanacs, before succumbing 14-11 in their B.C. Junior Lacrosse League home opener at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre on Sunday. Team captain Peyton Lupul set up first-year righty Aidan Milburn for the first of his four goals

to open the scoring. Lupul also drew a helper on first overall midget draft pick Tyler Vogrig’s 2-0 tally on a power play. The Lakers won the opening period 4-3 despite being outshot 22-11, thanks in part to the play of goalie David Mather, who was picked up in an off-season trade from Delta. Randy Jones, who was also part of the deal with Delta, picked up two goals and added four assists to tie Milburn as the top Burnaby pointgetters. But there were more positives on the floor, including how Burnaby responded in the latter half of the middle frame after Coquitlam opened the period on a 5-0 run.

Vogrig, Milburn and Scott Petursson, with his first of two goals, replied to bring the deficit down to a single score. In the final frame, Burnaby continued to chip away at the A’s lead, tying the contest 11-11 on Jones’ second of the game. “For these guys, (the way they responded), it’s huge,” said head coach and former Burnaby Cablevision star Brad Parker.“ToholdCoquitlam to 11 with eight minutes left to go (was like) we’re off to the Minto.” For Parker, who earlier helped consolidate the New Westminster franchise as a coach at the intermediate and junior A levels, it had to feel like a

moral victory. “We had ’em. … But we have a long way to go. It’s a real change in culture – confidence is fragile … but tonight was a really good start.” Last season, a performance like Sunday’s would have been impossible, and it even had some in attendance ready to give Parker coach of the year for what he and his coaching staff have accomplished in so short a time. But Parker was not ready to accept any charity. “I don’t like to lose and I want to be competitive with the other teams. We made a big step tonight, but we have lots of work ahead of us,” he said.

SBMC strike gold in second cup final Tom Berridge sports editor

South Burnaby Metro Club made good in its second consecutive B.C. Soccer Coastal Cup, winning the under-15 boys’ B Cup final. Curtis Li scored the first-half game-winner and then goalkeeper Austin Arrotta did the rest, securing the shutout with a 1-0 victory over the Surrey FC Ravens in a furious

finish at Minoru Park on Saturday. “(Surrey) was fierce. They put a lot of pressure on a lot of our players,” said Li, who slipped behind the Ravens’ back line and pounced on an Aiden Toy chip shot over the defence before directing the ball into the corner of the net. The winning goal was the only ball to get past the Ravens’ keeper in Coastal Cup playdowns after three consecutive shutouts leading up to

the final. But South Burnaby had its own shutdown keeper in Arrotta. The lanky goalie needed all of his 6-1 frame to palm away the potential game-tying goal with a desperation diving save as Surrey turned up the heat in the final 10 minutes of play. “I was surprised, to be honest,” said Arrotta after a Surrey player SBMC Page 20

overtime shootout. “I was lost for words. I didn’t know what to tell them,” said first-year head coach Scott Stefanek. The Selects were five minutes away from a first-ever Coastal A Cup title following a second goal of the game by Michael Simone in the first period of overtime. Simone also tied the score in the 35th minute of the opening half on a nice buildup in play before tucking the ball under a charging Surrey keeper from 10 yards out.

But late in the second period of OT, Surrey capitalized on a turnover in the midfield that forced the shootout. Ethan Westbury, who just missed a glorious chance to the near post in the second half and then set up Deylen Vellios on a well-saved one-timer on goal, scored Burnaby’s only goal in the penalty kicks. Surrey Guildford went on to win 3-1 in the shootout. The u-15 Burnaby Selects boys also earned a spot in the upcoming provincials through a back-door opportunity. tberridge@burnabynow.com

All wrapped up: Burnaby Lake’s smothering defence, in blue, kept Capilano out of the end zone for the most part in a 30-17 semifinal win at home on Saturday.

Burnaby to meet King James Bay in premier rugby final Tom Berridge sports editor

Burnaby Lake Rugby Club would like nothing better than to etch its name on the 92-year-old Rounsefell Cup. The men’s premier division regular-season league champions earned a spot in its second consecutive B.C. Rugby provincial final following a 30-17 victory over Capilano at Burnaby Lake-East on Saturday. The double blue jumped out to a 15-0 lead by midway through the opening half on tries by Cole McQueen and the first of two five-pointers by Burnaby Central grad Admir Cejvanovic. League scoring champion Geoff Ryan converted one of the scores and slotted a pair of three-point penalty goals to give Burnaby Lake an 18-12 advantage at the interval. Burnaby’s staunch defence, which gave up a league-low 168 points in 14 regular season matches, held strong in the second half, allowing the home team time and space to muster two more scores from substitute Matt Alexander and Cejvanovic.

Cap pushed in a late try off a 40-metre kickoff return by Gareth Dyer, but it was Burnaby Lake’s day. The win was Burnaby Lake’s 10th in a row since a 9-3 loss to the same Caps back in November. The two teams also played two weeks earlier with the visiting Blues edging the Caps 25-19 at Klahanie. With Saturday’s win, Burnaby Lake will prepare to meet 23-time provincial champion James Bay Athletic Club in the Rounsefell final on May 10. James Bay edged Castaway Wanderers 16-13 in an all-island semifinal on Saturday. Burnaby Lake has a lot at stake this season. After amassing a league-best 131-0 record, which included a pair of wins over the storied Victoria-based club, Burnaby would like to finally sip from the only major trophy that has so far eluded not only the club, but its former Burnaby Buffaloes and Vancouver Trojans counterparts. “It’s a sweet thing, but we’ve won nothing yet,” said club president Simon Smolden. “We were the

turned at the top of the 18-yard box and fired a quick shot on goal. “It was a really hard shot, but thankfully I was up to it.” And so were the rest of the Strikers, who had to finish the game with 11 players after an injury earlier in the match left them without any substitutions. “(The SBMC players) just put everything out there,” said Strikers co-coach Gordon Li. “It wasn’t our best game, but in terms of effort and emotion, I was proud of the boys.”

favourite last year but we didn’t perform.” Last year, Burnaby Lake lost 18-10 to James Bay in the cup final, while in 2012, the Lakers were edged 2321 by JBAA in the playoff semifinal. “We’re still the underdog,” Smolden said, weighing the wealth of experience and national team talent present on the James Bay squad. “People feel that way, but everything we got, we have earned. It will be a rematch of last year. It will be a hell of a dogfight,” Smolden added.

YO SUSHI Yo Sushi Japanese restaurant, in the heart of North Burnaby, is garnering quite a loyal following. This trendy, modern 80-seat family-run eatery has been gaining popularity since it opened its doors in December 2012. Executive chef and co-owner Yo Sung Hong credits fresh ingredients, great service and a commitment to delicious cuisine for his eatery getting busier and busier. “I have many clients now who come three times a week for lunch,” he adds. “I live in the neighbourhood, so I like that I’m cooking for my neighbours.” Korean-born, Yo has always had a passion for delectable Japanese food.. An executive chef for more than 15 years, trained in the art of traditional Japanese cuisine, Yo also takes great pride in offering great atmosphere and reasonable prices. He uses those cooking skills and recipes he learned over the years to provide his customers with mouthwatering sushi, special rolls, udon, tempura, Japanese style barbecue and more. He says sushi starts with buying the best fish. He is committed to purchasing only the freshest local ingredients for all the sushi. The menu offers a large selection of sushi, Bento boxes, and combos, but it’s the full page of specialty rolls that stands out. There are several winners here including the Yo House roll, Canucks roll and the extremely popular Red Dragon roll. Yo’s Bento Box combinations are a hit with customers as well. He has a number of them to choose from, including the chicken or beef teriyaki with tempura, Ebi Sunomono, California roll and daily special. Each comes with his tasty miso soup. In addition, loyal clientele often come back for his great special rolls and chicken karaage, to name just a few. Yo strives to make each dish infused with flavour and taste, and takes great pride in having others enjoy his creations. Yo has created a new menu with home-made items like spring rolls and kyoku egg cake. Yo also serves up a complimentary potato and yam Senbei appetizer made fresh daily while you wait for your order. “I make sure we buy the freshest produce, seafood and other ingredients and prepare everything in-house daily because customers are our family”, says Yo. Yo Sushi is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Yo Sushi Japanese Restaurant is located at 4266 Hastings Street, Burnaby.
