1 BURNABY LAKE
3 BURNABY
AND DEER LAKE PARK
VILLAGE MUSEUM
Spend time in nature at the centre of the city at two of Burnaby’s best parks. Deer Lake’s peaceful, natural environment is also the centre for Burnaby’s cultural activity. There’s walking trails with scenic views connected to the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, Burnaby Village Museum, and Burnaby Art Gallery. You can even stop off for a bite to eat after your hike at the Hart House Restaurant. Burnaby Lake Regional Park is just across the highway with 19 kilometres of walking and hiking trails, as well as plenty of paths for biking and horseback-riding to choose from. Both lakes are great spots for a canoeing or kayaking adventure in the summer. Check out one of the lookout points or the viewing tower, and stop off at one of the picnic sites with your lunch.
Transport yourself back in time to the 1920s at the Burnaby Village Museum. The village is a reconstruction of homes, businesses and shops built by Burnaby’s pioneers. The beautiful, authentic 1912 C.W. Parker carousel and old-time games will be fun for the kids. Meet the costumed townsfolk for a history lesson and some fun. The village is open seasonally during Spring Break, summer, for the Haunted Village in October, and Heritage Christmas in December, and more. Visit www.burnabyvillagemuseum.ca for more information. Gate admission is free.
2 NIKKEI NATIONAL MUSEUM & CULTURAL CENTRE There’s always something happening at the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre at Kingsway and Sperling, 6688 South Oaks Cres. The centre is a multi-use facility with a museum, community centre and garden. It hosts cultural and community activities, with public programs, exhibits, services and facilities year-round to create a better understanding and appreciation of Japanese culture. There are free festivals, as well as film screenings, workshops, camps and different seasonal events. See the art and artefacts at the museum and learn about Japanese-Canadian history. Check out their weekly programs too, including art classes, health and fitness classes, sports, and seniors programs.

6 RIVERWAY GOLF COURSE
Grab your clubs and some sunscreen and head to Riverway for the day to enjoy the pristine, premier 18-hole championship golf course. It’s nestled into Burnaby’s Riverside neighbourhood, with a beautiful green, an array of white tan bunkers and water hazards designed just right to make every shot a fun, exciting challenge. The 5,400- to 7,000-yard courses appeal to a wide range of golfers. Forgot your clubs? No problem. You can rent them – as well as pull or powercarts – on site for the day. Stop by the Clubhouse Restaurant or Bistro Lounge for a bite after the game.
7 CENTRAL PARK Explore the forest on the well-marked trails in Central Park. See the Douglas fir, western hemlock, cedar, poplar and maple grove trees, and the geese and ducks at the park’s two ponds. The park is known for its recreation facilities, and for good reason. There are tennis courts, an outdoor swimming pool, horseshoe pitch, a pitch-and-putt golf course, and, of course, Swangard Stadium, which hosts many sporting, cultural and corporate events. Get a workout at the fitness circuit with 12 outdoor fitness stations along the Trail of Hope, a 2.5-kilometre circuit around the park.
8 BURNABY MOUNTAIN AND
BARNET MARINE PARK
Watch the sunset in front of the Kamui Mintara totems with a breathtaking view of the Burrard Inlet and Indian Arm on top of Burnaby Mountain, or visit Horizons Restaurant. You can explore the downhill mountain biking trails with something for riders of all skill levels, hike the 1,400-metre-long Velodrome Trail, or visit Simon Fraser University. Get closer to the water at Barnet Marine Park, and go for a stroll along the water’s edge. The large, sandy beach is a popular spot for a swim on a warm day. Bring your canoe or kayak and get out on the water.
9 SHADBOLT CENTRE FOR THE ARTS Check out Burnaby’s award-winning community arts theatre, the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. This facility is known for its performing and fine arts space, and high-quality productions during theatre season. Try some of their spring/summer arts programs with something for all ages, including crafts, visual arts, literary arts, dance, and music programs. In July, there’s the free outdoor concert Symphony in the Park with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Search “Shadbolt” at Burnaby.ca to see a full lineup of programs.
10 CONFEDERATION PARK There’s no shortage of things to do at Confederation Park, one of the city’s hidden gems. Take the kids for a ride on a miniature train at the Burnaby Central Railway, cool off at the outdoor water play area, or go swimming at the Eileen Dailly Leisure Pool and Fitness Centre. There’s a ball diamond, playing fields, tennis courts, skate park, library, youth and seniors centres, a track, and even space for your dog at the off-leash trail and enclosure areas. Try your hand at lawn bowling, visit a picnic site, or use the bocce ball court. DISCOVER BURNABY 2018

DISCOVER BURNABY 2017
There’s no denying the charm of Burnaby Heights. You’ll get that small-town feel right in the middle of the city, while spending time shopping at unique stores, or sitting down for a cup of coffee, ice cream, or dinner at one of its many restaurants. The Heights is right on top of one of the three hills in Burnaby facing the Burrard Inlet. Thousands of immigrants – many of them Italian, English and Irish – came here in the early 1900s with the opening of Hastings Street and the arrival of the street car in North Burnaby
in 1908. Soon after that, the first merchants made their way to set up their shops. Some of the businesses are still owned by second or third generation merchants, while others are owned and operated by new immigrants of diverse cultures. On the first Saturday in June, be sure to go to Hats Off Day with 50,000 of your neighbours at Burnaby’s biggest festival. Local businesses “tip their hats” to customers with activities, food and fun throughout the day. You’ll also find some festivities around Hal-
loween and the Lunar New Year. The Heights Merchants Association, which has been an official business improvement area since 1994, focuses on issues affecting the area, including street beautification, cleaning, decorative signs, and creates the annual business directory. Not to mention their fun seasonal events. For information, go to www.burnabyheights.com.

EDMONDS HIGHGATE VILLAGE Edmonds is one of the oldest, and most vibrant areas of the city. Burnaby’s first municipal hall was located here at Kingsway and Edmonds 125 years ago, and today, it is one of the fastest-growing areas in Burnaby. It’s also known for its multicultural mix of residents, with many African and Eastern European immigrants living in this part of town. That diversity is reflected in the cuisine. In Edmonds, you’ll find Italian, Greek and Chinese restaurants, as well as Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese, Nigerian and Indian cuisines. The life of this part of the city comes together at the Edmonds Community Centre. The centre, built in 2013, was the first community centre to be built in more than 20 years, and it’s double the size of the Bonsor Recreation Complex. There’s room for everyone at the 90,000 square-foot space, which has 200 parking stalls. Inside, there’s a double gymnasium, a six-lane 25-metre lap pool, a leisure pool, hot tub and sauna. There’s a multipurpose area, fitness centre, space for badminton, basketball, floor hockey, as well as studio space, a youth centre, seniors centre, and space for martial arts and child care. Right now, there are plans to expand the community with the Southgate City development, which will add up to 20 towers and a new seniors centre over the next few years. With development set to grow around this town centre, you can expect the life and energy at Edmonds to grow as well.

BRENTWOOD TOWN CENTRE BURNABY
SHOPPING
Plans for the Brentwood Town Centre are shaping up, and the site is already a hot-spot for luxury housing, community and shopping. Over the next year, “The Amazing Brentwood” is scheduled to be completed, and expected to be one of the largest urban centres in North America to live, shop and play all in one spot. Until then, visit one of the shops already open. Bring the kids to the children’s play area, or stop at one of the retail shops or restaurants for a bite to eat. For more information go to www. brentwoodtowncentre.com.
LOUGHEED TOWN CENTRE Lougheed Town Centre is becoming The City of Lougheed – Canada’s largest new master planned community with +20 residential towers, a collection of neighbourhoods and the shops, eateries and entertainment that make a great city. From shopping centre to city centre, the evolution has begun. Change begins in 2018 with the opening of the new Eateries which will serve quick quality fare in a fresh new space. From local poke to authentic Persian, the vendor line-up brings 13 of Vancouver’s favourites to one place. And with surprising touches like living walls and stone finishes, the Eateries offer a glimpse of the quality you can expect with every new addition to The City of Lougheed. Today, Lougheed is home to Walmart, Hudson’s Bay, London Drugs, Sport Chek and H&M with the Millennium and Evergreen SkyTrain Lines connected. Over the short and long term future, it will evolve into a complete and authentic 37-acre city. From the Eateries to the 1,500 homes underway in the First Neighbourhood, every change will bring progress, adding value to the project and the community around it.
Working together for you. Enjoy all that Burnaby has to offer!

The stadium is home to all kinds of sporting teams, recently with TSS FC Rovers, B.C.’s only women’s soccer team being added to the list. The new team splits their home games between Swangard Stadium and Mercer Stadium in New West. The Bill Copeland Sports Centre has twin arenas, 2,000-seat capacity, and space for ice skating and other ice sports. The ice rink is NHL regulation size and features retractable seats and boards. The city is also home to Canlan Ice Sports Burnaby 8 Rinks, where recreational hockey players have a multitude of ice options, and a variety of cultural activities. PLAY PARKS There’s plenty of outdoors to explore at the more than 150 parks in the city. With plenty of walking and cycling trails and outdoor amenities, you’ll never be short of things to do in Burnaby’s great outdoors. The 86.4-hectare urban Central Park is one of our favourites. There are natural ponds, plenty of walking and biking trails, tennis courts, a pitch-and-putt golf course, lawn bowling, horseshoe pitches, all under a lovely canopy of lush, native trees, including Douglas fir, western hemlock, cedar, poplar and maple grove. There are also ball diamonds, a fitness circuit, outdoor pool, and kids playgrounds. Don’t forget Swangard Stadium, which hosts a variety of sporting and cultural events over the year. Scale Burnaby Mountain for breathtaking views of the Burrard Inlet and the North Shore. You’ll find the Kamui Mintara (Playground of the Gods) totems
on top of the hill, created by Japanese sculptors Nuburi Toko and his son Shusei, gifted to the city to show goodwill between Burnaby and Kushiro, Japan, our sister city. There’s cycling, casual picnic sites, the 1,400-metre-long velodrome trail, and a lovely rose garden. For mountain bikers, there’s downhill trails for riders of varying difficulties, some with obstacles. The trails attract riders of all skill levels from across the Lower Mainland. Watch the sunset at the beach at Barnet Marine Park, or hop in your canoe or kayak and get out on water. Lounge on the sand or go swimming in the Burrard Inlet from here, or use the nearby fishing pier, used by fishermen of all ages and abilities. Appreciate the beauty of the Fraser River at the Burnaby Fraser Foreshore Park. The shoreline trail is popular for runners, or you can sit at one of the benches along the path and take in the scenery.
Deer Lake Park is known both for its scenic lake views, and as the hub of Burnaby’s cultural and art activity. If you follow the walking trails, you might end up at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, the Burnaby Village Museum or the Burnaby Art Gallery. There’s lots of grassy areas to rest along the way. If you’re hungry, stop with your lunch at one of the picnic sites or get a bite to eat at the Hart House Restaurant. Don’t forget the Metro Skate Park at the northwest corner of Imperial Street and Jubilee Avenue in Bonsor Park, popular with young skateboarders. There’s zones for all levels of ability, with the Metro Square for realistic street skating, the Bonsor Pipeline with a fullpipe for extreme bowl skating, and Dogleg Bowl for old-school park-style skating. For more information on Burnaby’s Parks and Recreation amenities, go to www.burnaby.ca.
GOLFING Enjoy the luxury of private clubs at public courses when you play at Burnaby’s award-winning golf facilities. Riverway Golf Course, the classic 18-hole championship course, is one of the premier golf courses in the Lower Mainland. The 5,400- to 7,000-yard course is designed with beautiful wild grasses, white tan bunkers and challenging water hazards. Visit the driving range to get your swing just right. There are 54 stalls, covered, climate-controlled and night-lit. The Riverway Clubhouse is a great place to stop off at the end of the day for dinner, or drop in at the Bistro for breakfast or lunch before you head out to 9001 Bill Fox Way, in south Burnaby. Call 604280-4653 for more info. Head to Burnaby Mountain Golf Course, rated by Golf Digest as one of the best places to play on the continent. You’ll enjoy the serene, popular golf course with 5,800 to 6,400 yards of natural, tree-lined beauty and a gentle rolling hill

terrain. You’ll need precise shot-making to achieve par, but recreational players find it forgiving. If you need some practice, get a few swings in at the new state-of-the-art heated and lit 60-stall driving range. Head to the Burnaby Mountain Clubhouse after you’ve swung up an appetite. It’s located at 7600 Halifax St., in north Burnaby. Call 604-280-7355 for more. Looking for something more casual? Try one of Burnaby’s pitch and putt layouts. Central Park Pitch and Putt (3883 Imperial St.) is located in the heart of the city. You can practice your short game and enjoy a golfing experience in a beautiful park setting, great for players of all skills. For beginners, or if you don’t have time for a full round, you can still have the golf experience at Kensington Pitch and Putt (5889 Curtis St.). This course is great for all ages, but children under eight need to provide certification of ability to play. Call Riverway or Burnaby Mountain for more information.

FOOD ON THE RUN
EATS
Fast food should be just that — fast — but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice quality for speed. If you grab your food to go from one of these places, you can be sure your food will be both quick and tasty. The Ice Cream Parlour at the Burnaby Village Museum at 6501 Deer Lake Ave. is one of the city’s best-kept secrets and tastiest spots to grab a quick bite. Try the butter chicken or fish and chips to go. Don’t forget to grab some ice cream on your way out. And if you decide to stay, you’ll enjoy their recently redecorated interior. The new furniture and paint really class it up. For more info, contact the Burnaby Village Museum at 604-297-4565. Anyone who tells you they don’t like pizza is lying, plain and simple. If you’re ordering in, call up Stan’s Pizza Joint at 4527 Hastings St. where business partners Judith Gauge and Stan Reid have been offering up delicious pizza at great prices for more than 10 years. Call 604-298-5711 for more info. In South Burnaby, the owners of Me-n-Eds Pizza at 7110 Hall Ave. are pretty much pizzamaking experts. You should go there. Even Michael J. Fox thinks so (he says it’s the best in the city). Call 604-521-8881 for more info.

ARTS & CUTURE
A Diverse Community Burnaby is home to a variety of different groups of people, and there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate our diverse languages and cultures. Spend the day at Swangard Stadium in July for the 2018 Fiji Festival. The free annual festival includes a traditional Fijian ceremony, entertainment, and a talent and fashion show, traditional foods, a cultural display and soccer tournament. There’s also the Rhododendron Festival held annually in May. The city co-hosts the event with the Burnaby Rhododendron and Gardens Society in the day-long celebration to promote sustainable ecology with a variety of entertainment including rovers, mini-workshops, horticultural and nature tours, a silent auction, arts activities, and artisan, pottery and plant sales. In August, check out the Korean Cultural Heritage Festival at Swangard Stadium. The full day event includes an opening ceremony with special guest performances, live entertainment, and food, all to celebrate the multiculturalism of Metro Vancouver. In September, celebrate Burnaby’s diverse cultures at Culture Days in Canada. Experience fun and free public programming at the Burnaby Village Museum, Burnaby Art Gallery and the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts during the celebrations. Also check out the annual Nikkei Matsuri Japanese festival in midSeptember. A matsuri (festival) has been part of the Japanese cultural tradition in cities across North America. The family-friendly festival will introduce you to Japanese culture through food, music, entertainment, Japanese kids games and more. Visit nikkeimatsuri.nikkeiplace.org for more information.
FRESH. LOCAL. FUN. We choose the best local ingredients – farm-fresh vegetables, Ocean Wise seafood, hormone-free meats – and cook them with care.
