It’s Spring Convocation season at Simon Fraser University. More than 4,200 students were presented with their degrees in seven ceremonies over four days this week. Six honourary degrees were also presented, including an honourary Doctor of Fine Arts to musician Sarah McLachlan on Wednesday. Instead of making a speech, McLachlan serenaded the 700 graduates from the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology and the Faculty of Science with two songs.

NEWS BRIEFS HOME INVASION BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN TARGETED: RCMP

Police are seeking witnesses to an assault outside a South Burnaby restaurant last month that sent a man to hospital in critical condition. On Sunday, May 22, at around 11 p.m. a man was assaulted outside the House Of Wings Restaurant, located at HighGate mall at the corner of Kingsway and Hall Avenue. The man was taken to hospital, and is currently in critical condition due to injuries sustained in the attack. The Burnaby RCMP serious crime unit is actively investigating the incident and police believe there were several witnesses who were either at the restaurant or in the area at the time of the assault. These witnesses are encouraged to come forward by calling Burnaby RCMP at 604-294-7922 or to remain anonymous, CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Burnaby RCMP are seeking three armed men involved in a home invasion Tuesday afternoon. The three men forced their way into a home in the 7000-block of Burris Street on June 14 just after 12 p.m. They tied up the only person home at the time, a 19-year-old woman, and threatened her with a knife. The attack appears to have been targeted, say police, since the suspects had knowledge of the home’s security system and what valuables would be found there. The suspects stole two personal safes and a computer tower. The contents of the safes have not yet been disclosed to investigators. The only description of the suspects is that they are all Asian males. The victim did not see any vehicle which may have been associated with the suspects. Anyone with information on the home invasion is asked to call Burnaby RCMP at 604-294-7922 or to remain anonymous, CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

oger Hopkins remembers a day many years ago watching his son Adam, who was about nine at the time, do some hockey drills with other players. Another son, Ryan, who was younger than Adam by almost five years, was on the ice, too. “Ryan was a little mite of a guy,” recalls Hopkins. For one drill they skated from one end to the other. Little Ryan went flying down the ice, but he couldn’t stop and he wiped out crashing into the boards. He was crying, but was OK. “I was trying hard Dad,” he said when Roger rushed out on the ice. Roger said to the coach, “Sorry, Ryan doesn’t know how to stop yet.” “No, he doesn’t, but Roger, he was the fastest guy out there,” replied the coach, incredulous. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has been impressing hockey people ever since. So much so that the Burnaby boy, who played for the Western Hockey League’s Red Deer Rebels the last two seasons, is the top-ranked player by NHL Central Scouting heading into next Friday’s NHL

entry draft.

Starting young Nugent-Hopkins learned to skate when he was two. When not on the ice, he’d play road hockey with his brother and the neighbourhood kids, or go to the basement to shoot pucks against the wall. “I always had a passion for it. I always loved to play,” says Nugent-Hopkins from Red Deer the morning after meeting with Colorado Avalanche brass, who have the second pick overall, and before driving to Edmonton to meet with the Oilers, who have the first pick. “I’ve always just liked playing for fun, I never thought it would end up like this.” At first Nugent-Hopkins played at the North Shore Winter Club, but that became too far and too expensive, so he played for Burnaby Minor for a year and then the Burnaby Winter Club. When he hit Grade 8, he chose to attend Burnaby North’s hockey academy so he could get more ice time. In his first year in major bantam the BWC Bruins won the Western Canadian title. It was a dominant squad with four players selected in the first round of the 2007

WHL bantam draft and seven in the first 50. The team’s coach, John Batchelor, told Hopkins his kid had “a real shot” at playing in the NHL. It surprised Hopkins because he believed the odds of it happening were one in a million. Hockey agent Rick Valette of Octagon Sports knew the odds were a lot better than that the first time he set eyes on him. “I couldn’t help but watch this kid, he was mesmerizing,” says Valette. “He was an amazing talent, even at that age, he just absolutely

controlled that game.”

Saw his chance When Nugent-Hopkins saw all his teammates getting scouted he knew he had a chance to play in the WHL. The night before the 2008 bantam draft, the Rebels, who had the first selection, called to make sure he would commit to them and not take the U.S. college route. He was more than happy to sign on the dotted line. He has lived up to the great expectations. In 200910, he won WHL rookie of the year scoring 24 goals and

It’s a small-town atmosphere, but you’ve got everything you need,” says Nugent-Hopkins, who also had to get used to the long, overnight bus trips as well as juggling high school studies with his pursuit of puck preeminence. “It’s been difficult a little bit. You want to do the best you can with hockey so you keep going while remembering school is still important.” For Hopkins and Ryan’s mother, Deb Nugent, it may have been sad to see their son move so far away, but it more than worked out as both of them heap praise on the Nykyforuks.

Associate superintendent Elliott Grieve is retiring this month after 35 years in the Burnaby school district, but while he’s often been cited as a mentor who provided guidance, he’s never served as a classroom teacher here. By the time he joined Burnaby in 1976, his three years as a high school English teacher in Surrey were already behind him. Grieve, 63, recalled it was a tragedy that set him on the course his career would take. “I had a student who committed suicide. I had no idea what she was going through, and she had no supports or resources to help her.” He felt more needed to be done to help students deal with challenges they faced outside the classroom, and he wanted to be part of the solution. Grieve spent some

time teaching and studying in the United States where the community school concept was taking root and soon found himself back home doing community development work with the federal government. It wasn’t long before the Surrey school district recruited him to bring the community school concept there. Then Burnaby came calling. The idea behind community schools is to allow the wider community to use school facilities outside

school hours as hubs of lifelong learning and places where social service agencies can provide support and youth services. “If you feel that anything that happens to a child, family, neighbourhood or community impacts [the child’s] learning and teaching, then you need to reach out to the community and the community becomes part of the solution.” As coordinator of community education services, Grieve

helped implement the concept at seven elementary schools— Edmonds, Gilmore, Lochdale, Maywood, Second Street, Stoney Creek and Stride Avenue. He laughed when he recalled learning that when he was hired by the school board of the day, it was only by a 3-2 vote. The two dissenters were worried about the prospect of hiring someone for a specific project who would then stay forever. “I don’t understand what they were concerned about.” Over the years Grieve has worked not only in community education but in human resources and as director of instruction. He’s been responsible for adult and continuing education, international education, summer school, immigrant support services and youth services. His current role also includes serving as deputy superintendent. Essentially he’s in charge of everything outside of basic K-12 education. In his 35-year tenure, during which 66,165 students have received high school diplomas, Grieve has seen the impact technological advances have had on education but also the change in the diversity of Burnaby’s population. That diversity is not only cultural but economic and social too, all of which have created challenges the district has had to respond to. Grieve believes “neighbourhood schools are one of the best institutions out there that brings all people together.” And they’ve proved effective in reaching out to new immigrants, connecting them with community resources and services. Grieve said it was clear to him early on that Burnaby is a community that values education and lifelong learning, noting that it’s had continuing education programs since 1928. “Public education is fundamental to the democratic Canadian culture we’re so blessed to have,” he said. “Being part of that process has been very rewarding.” wchow@burnabynewsleader.com

Burnaby school board approves Policy 5.45 Hundreds rally outside in support of controversial anti-homophobia policy By Wanda Chow NEWSLEADER

The Burnaby school board unanimously approved its controversial anti-homophobia policy on Tuesday evening, prompting cheers from the hundreds who had gathered to support it. The cheers of about 400 supporters lasted for ďŹ ve minutes when the decision was announced, said Kaitlin Burnett, 25, a community activist who organized the rally. Burnett, a lesbian who had experienced homophobic bullying while a student in the Burnaby school district, said the supporters included parents, teachers, students, and members of the Burnaby community, Christian churches, the labour movement and PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays). She said she was “thrilledâ€? by the decision. “It’s all in implementation but it has the potential to make a huge difference in the lives of students.â€? Burnett noted that most of the speakers and entertainers at the rally were youth. Despite what opponents have said, “this isn’t a case of adults with an agenda trying to force a policy

on Burnaby youth. This is a case of Burnaby youth asking for a policy. I’m very glad they got what they asked for. Earlier in the day, Parents’ Voice, a parents’ group opposed to the policy, presented a 5,000-signature petition to the premier expressing its opposition. Nevertheless, Burnaby school trustees passed the draft policy with revisions which board chair Larry Hayes said cleaned up some of the language and “probably made it more palatable to a good number of people. The changes were in response to constructive

feedback about the policy’s title, and phraseology and the realization some words didn’t translate well into other languages. “We may know what we’re talking about but we want to make sure the general public knows what we’re talking about as well. Use of the word “curriculum also caused misunderstandings that the district was changing curriculum with the policy. “We just wanted to make clear we’re not swaying away from anything that the Ministry of Education doesn’t already approve, he said of other changes. The new policy is not unlike others that aim to prevent discrimination on the basis of race, religion or gender, he said. “This is just another one of those tools that is focusing on a group that certainly we have learned needs that extra assistance. But Hayes doesn’t believe the board can make everybody happy on the issue. “For those that are just opposed to recognizing that there’s No. 1, an issue, or No. 2, that there should be recognition of anybody but heterosexuals in society, are we ever going to convince them? Probably not. But that’s not the kind of atmosphere we want in our school district or in our community.

Burnaby RCMP are warning the public of a man impersonating a police ofďŹ cer. On June 9, a woman in Southeast Burnaby noticed a suspicious man lurking about and peering into cars. When she confronted him, he ashed a round-shaped badge and claimed to be a police ofďŹ cer investigating car thefts in the area. The man did not provide his name or state which detachment he was from. A Burnaby RCMP investigation found no plainclothes police units were in the area at the time of the incident. The suspect is described as 40 years old and six-feet tall with a medium build, dirty blond hair and light-coloured eyes.

He was clean cut with no facial hair. At the time of the incident he was wearing a black or dark blue jacket, a black baseball cap, blue jeans and black shoes. “If someone identiďŹ es themselves to you as a police ofďŹ cer they will usually state their name and rank and which detachment or police force they are working out of,â€? said Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Rick Skolrood. He advised that if people are ever suspicious about a nonuniformed person presenting themselves as a police ofďŹ cer they should call local police immediately. Police dispatchers will be able to conďŹ rm the identity of any police ofďŹ cers working in the area. newsroom@burnabynewsleader.com

—EDITORIAL—

Vote is in the mail, or maybe not The labour dispute at Canada Post isn’t inconveniencing too many people, because most of us don’t rely on the mail the way we once did. However, it may prove to be a big factor in the upcoming referendum on the HST. Voting packages are now going out in the mail, and the last package is supposed to be delivered by Friday, June 24. That seems to be a hopelessly optimistic timetable at the present, given that the rotating strikes by Canada Post workers have now become a national lockout. The referendum timetable calls for all completed voting packages to be in the hands of Elections BC by Friday, July 22. While there will be opportunities to drop off the completed voting packages, and that may be the best bet for those who want to ensure that their votes are counted, some people will return the packages through the mail system. This is particularly likely when considering that many of us take vacations in late June and early July and won’t be going to great lengths to find a place where a completed referendum voting package can be dropped off. The vote on the future of the HST is a very important one. Not only is it crucial in determining B.C. tax policy, it is seen by many as an opportunity to strike a blow for democracy and public consultation. While the government badly handled the HST issue for much of the past two years, it is now consulting the public in a meaningful way. Too bad it didn’t allow for the possibility that the voting process could be interrupted by a labour disruption at the post office. It would be most unfortunate if the HST referendum is crippled by a postal strike. - Black Press

Parents’ Voice tried to circumvent the board the other day by taking their petition to Premier Christy Clark. She, quite correctly, said it was a battle to be fought between them and the board. However, Clark should take the pressure off boards across B.C., and make the policy province wide. Such a move would help keep the bigots at bay. Whether the BCA can do the same come November remains to be seen. ■ Grant Granger is a NewsLeader reporter ggranger@burnabynewsleader.com

I wish I could applaud the City for taking on the management of an affordable housing complex at 5706 Irmin Ave. Instead, I worry that the affordable family rentals will eventually be replaced with additional market housing. The 20-unit rental family housing project is about 42 years old with about 18 years left on its lease from the city. The three-bedroom units are close to Burnaby South secondary, somewhat close to Royal Oak Station and across the street from the MacPherson Walk development where a three-bedroom home will cost you over half a million dollars. According to the city manager’s report tabled May 30, if a rental family’s income exceeds $51,000 the society managing the property must pay the city an additional $10,500. With three families exceeding that limit the society owed the city $31,500 last year. Currently, with four vacant units there are 13 families living there with incomes below $54,000. The city plans to reduce the number of families below that threshold to seven units. Additionally, they plan to increase the number of units available at higher market rates to six units. Given the age of the development and the proximity to the newly developed MacPherson

Walk, one has to wonder what affordable housing will remain in the neighbourhood after the current council takes over the lease. Will the city eventually sell off this piece of valuable land to another developer? We look to the city to protect affordable housing; instead it is eroding it by changing the mix of social and market housing. Burnaby has the opportunity to show leadership and preserve this land for social housing purposes for the next 50 years. Rick McGowan Burnaby

Eileen Dailly Pool in North Burnaby was expected to be back to its regular operating hours on Thursday, June 16, after a week of staff having to shut it down for periods to address water chemistry issues. Burnaby’s parks and recreation director Dave Ellenwood said that late last week pool staff noticed the increased numbers of people using the pool due to warmer weather was causing a jump in the amount of contaminants in the water. While the water was never unsafe, it was an indication the water chemistry was not right. Ellenwood explained that the way the pool’s system works, the chlorine level automatically adjusts according to the amount of contaminants present in the water. The chlorine then attaches itself to the contaminants and it’s all removed via filters. When staff discovered the elevated chlorine levels they had to determine where the increase in contaminants was coming from and how to get the chlorine levels lower and the water chemistry

back into balance. They zeroed in on the pool’s secondary treatment mechanism, ozonation, and are adjusting it to fix the problem. Essentially, it wasn’t working as efficiently as it should have which was leading to contaminants building up and having to be dealt with by the chlorination system. The water quality has improved the past couple of days, he said Wednesday, and if chemistry readings remained stable the pool was expected to return to normal hours Thursday. The pool mainly had its evening hours reduced, from the regular 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. although there were some morning closures and full-day closures early on as well. “We needed to close the pool because we needed to do things with the pool chemistry that we couldn’t do with people in the pool.” The hours were needed to allow staff to adjust the water chemistry, from diluting the pool with fresh water to tweaking the ozonation system. Ellenwood noted that any programs affected by the reduced hours will be extended “so nobody will be negatively affected.” To check on the status of the pool’s operating hours, call 604-298SWIM (7946) or visit http://tinyurl. com/3nymuxf. wchow@burnabynewsleader.com

life in their shoes The Hero In YouÂŽ education program offers a series of FREE curriculum-linked lesson plans (grades 4-7) aimed to motivate children to ďŹ nd the champion within themselves. In addition, teachers can request a FREE classroom presentation delivered in-person by a Hall of Fame athlete!

Attention Teachers:

North Burnaby residents Dennis and Margaret Hansen hosted six cyclists and their team leader, all with Team Rubicon, in 2008. Two of the group actually slept next door in the neighbour’s spare room. The Hansens, who were also involved as volunteers on race day in the Heights, spent time socializing with the riders but “they pretty much looked after themselves, said Dennis.

While he originally thought he’d take them out sightseeing, he soon realized their routine consisted of racing, resting and recuperating. “They don’t have the time and energy to go and visit the town. Anyone interested in hosting cyclists can complete a form online at http://tinyurl. com/3tu3u6p, email info@girodiburnaby. com or call 604-8427830. wchow@burnabynewsleader.com

Toast Dad with a few words As we honour the fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, and uncles in our lives, here are some inspirational and funny words to live by. “To be a successful father, there’s one absolute rule: when you have a kid, don’t look at it for the first two years.” — Ernest Hemingway “Never raise your hand to your kids. It leaves your groin unprotected.” — Red Buttons “By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he’s wrong.” — Charles Wadsworth “I’m so ugly, my father carries around a picture of the kid who came with his wallet.” — Rodney Dangerfield “Any man can be a father, but it takes a special person to be a dad.” — Proverb “When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. Linda Hanson is a doer. She was student council president at Cariboo secondary in 1996 when an RCMP community liaison officer asked for volunteers to represent the school on the Edmonds community policing committee. The silence was deafening. So Hanson jumped into the fray. She hasn’t left. “This year is my 15 year anniversary so it looks like they’re stuck with me. My initial hopes proved correct and I ended up really enjoying it; the idea that a few motivated citizens could improve the neighbourhood and the great people that I ended up working with,” says Hanson, now 31 and working as a research coordinator at UBC’s Faculty of Medicine. Over the years she’s helped out with Town Hall meetings on topics like prostitution and auto theft, and has participated in community clean ups. And, she says, it’s made a difference. “The contrast between the Edmonds area 15 years ago and today is amazing. People are proud of our community now and it shows. Edmonds really is rising!”

TIP OF THE MONTH Discourage Loitering Around Your Business Loiterers can intimidate pedestrians, disrupt business operations, and engage in crimes of opportunity, particularly in the summer months. This can be a problem for businesses. To discourage loitering around your business, keep these tips in mind: • never give panhandlers money or allow non-customers to use your telephone or washroom • always keep the property around your business clean and free of graffiti • remove items that allow people to hide from view or seek shelter from the sun and other weather elements • call the police when illegal activity such as drug use, theft, prostitution, public alcohol consumption, or intoxication is detected, or when panhandlers or loiterers become aggressive or refuse to leave the property when asked.

Cycling is an affordable, healthy and environmentally responsible way to travel around the city. To ensure it is also a safe method of transportation, cyclists should remember a few key bike safety tips:

SAVING

About six years ago, thieves tried smashing their way through the South Burnaby business with a truck. When that didn’t work, they threw a large rock through the window and within five minutes, had cleared out all their computers, recalled Jeff Taylor, Hemlock’s general manager and COO.

A recent “tag”—if you can call a 100-foot-by-10-foot piece of graffiti three storeys up, past barbed wire and security devices, and visible only from SkyTrain a “tag”—did however, have them scratching their heads. Taylor admitted it was done with some “artistic flair” but nevertheless, it was reported to police and painted over the next day.

Each contestant will have a maximum of five minutes to perform their talents. There will be Prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Judging will be done by a committee and all decisions will be final.

$

Hemlock Printers’ proactive approach to crime prevention started with a bang—literally.

They always report any criminal activity to help raise awareness in the neighbourhood. And they make sure graffiti is painted over within 24 hours.

Q: What is the purpose of the Burnaby RCMP Bike Unit? A: The highly visible Burnaby RCMP Bike Unit is an alternative enforcement method that provides a very mobile, proactive, and flexible response in areas not readily accessible to a patrol car. Q: Where and when is the RCMP Bike Unit used? A: Mountain bikes have proven effective in a number of environments – they can operate on streets, sidewalks, alleys, and trails. They are swift and agile in busy urban areas where traffic snarls and crowds delay motorized vehicles. Bikes are also effective in less urban areas for patrolling parks and campus areas, in parking lots, in residential and business areas, at athletic or civic events, and for specialized details. Q: What are the other benefits of maintaining the RCMP Bike Unit? A: There are a number of other benefits, as follows: • Response time in heavy traffic is improved with the use of bikes. • Bicycles give officers the “stealth advantage”. Because bikes are silent, officers on bikes can ride right up to the scene of a crime before they are noticed. • Police cyclists lead by example and promote helmet use and bike safety to the community and its children. • A police officer on a bike is much more approachable than one in a police cruiser. • Bicycle use promotes good health, which can mean decreased healthcare costs. • It is enjoyable to ride a bicycle, and even occasional bike duty improves morale. • Bike units are cost-effective. The average cost per bike is approximately $1200, a fraction of the cost of a police cruiser. For more information on the RCMP Bike Unit, call the Southwest Community Police Office at 604-656-3232.

‘It’s a dream come true’

CONTINUED FROM PAGE

A3

“It’s hard to let your son go, but it’s been the best for him,” says Hopkins. This past season, Nugent-Hopkins tied for third in WHL scoring with 31 goals, 106 points and a plus-30 rating in 69 games. As the season went on he kept climbing the rankings put out by various organizations including Central Scouting. “I tried not to look during the season because I didn’t want it to affect my play, so I never really thought about it,” says NugentHopkins. “It’s a huge honour for me. I’m just very excited about the opportunity I have.” His father has taken note of the rankings but he’s having trouble digesting it all. “It’s kind of surreal. I keep seeing him on television and reading about him in blogs. I don’t know how to explain it. I never, ever thought it would happen. It’s like winning the lotto,” says Hopkins. “It’s an amazing feeling, and I’m just proud of the fact he’s

basically the same boy. He’s not egotistical at all. He’s just a nice kid.” Hopkins told his son recently that since he signed with the Rebels he’s done so much on his own, on and off the ice, without the help of his father, mother or brother. “The last two years have been totally you,” said Hopkins to his son. “You should be proud of yourself. You’ve done it on your own.” Valette couldn’t ask for a better client who has really progressed from being a shy little kid. “He knows what he wants and he knows how to get there,” says Valette. “He’s got a burning, burning desire. He is a really nice young man, but he’s got a competitive fire that’s a raging bonfire beneath. That’s not going to leave him.” June has already been a whirlwind for Nugent-Hopkins, and the draft isn’t until next week. It started with an Octagon camp in Saskatoon. Then it was off to Toronto

for the NHL scouting combine to show how fit he was and get probed and prodded by player personnel from 14 NHL teams. While there he attended the Canadian Hockey League awards where he was named the CHL’s top prospect. Then it was a quick trip back to Red Deer to attend his high school graduation banquet. The next day he flew to Boston to be shown off by the NHL during the Stanley Cup final as one of the game’s top prospects. “Just being around the Stanley Cup atmosphere was incredible,” says Nugent-Hopkins. Growing up he didn’t have a favourite team, not even the Vancouver Canucks, just favourite players like Burnaby’s own Joe Sakic. That’s why he isn’t particular about which team takes him, although going first overall sure would be something special. “I’d love to go No. 1 and join a team like Edmonton. They have a lot of young, skilled players and it would be great to help them

rebuild,” he says. His parents would like that too because it’s a short plane ride away. They’ll finally get to find out next Friday in St. Paul, Minn., when the Oilers step to the podium to make their pick. “The more I think about it the more excited about it I get. It’s a dream come true.”

What’s being said about Burnaby’s Ryan NugentHopkins prior to the Jan. 24 NHL entry draft: Peter Sullivan, NHL Central Scouting, who mainly scouts WHL prospects: “A couple of people high up in the Oilers organization— and I’m not naming names— said Hopkins has the best vision on the ice since No. 99 (Wayne Gretzky). That’s the highest compliment you can get, but also another thing is the way Ryan competes. He never takes a night off and he works as hard in his own end as he does in the offensive zone. It takes a special player with special skills to be able to do that.” – nhl.com B.J. MacDonald, also a WHL scouting specialist for NHL Central Scouting: “I think Hopkins will be prolific because he’s one of the few this year where he consistently beat players one-on-one. I always kid other scouts and say he’s got the biggest gap in the league because when he swings out of his own zone with that puck, everyone else just backs up because they don’t want to get beat by him—that gives you a little indication of his talent. As he advances, his learning curve is so fast that he’ll be able to elevate his play alongside better players.” – nhl.com Red Deer head coach Jesse Wallin on whether Nugent-Hopkins will play for the Rebels next season or in the NHL: “Of course I’d love to see him back here. Regardless of where he’s at and whether he can play at the NHL level, that’s going to be determined when he gets there. It’s going to depend on a lot of things ... the situation with the team that drafts him and if he gets bigger and stronger over the summer. In terms of his ability, he’s probably ready now, but it’s a big step to go up and play against men. I have no doubt in my mind that he would benefit greatly by coming back here and I can say that about any 18-year-old player.” – Red Deer Advocate

Block party an ideal way to mark the warm-weather holidays Todd Polich

Who hasn’t walked or driven by a neighbourhood and felt a tinge of envy when he or she came across a block party in full swing? Laughing neighbours spilled out onto front lawns, children enjoying the freedom of prancing in the street, barbecues smoking and coolers overflowing with ice and drinks are just some of the elements to assail the senses. There’s bound to be a DJ or some amusement-type rides to complete the picture, too. Chances are the celebrations continue into the evening hours. Although a block or street party may seem like it can simply be thrown together with a few conversations among neighbours, there is actually a good deal of planning that should go into executing a neighbourhood event.

Getting started At the start, a committee or group leader should be put in charge of organizing the event. This is often the person on the

street that is friendly with the most people and has a rapport that enables him or her to easily converse with the neighbours and gauge their feelings about a block party and what date would work best. Very often neighbours will be on board with a party idea. It’s safe to expect opposition from a few. These people are under no obligation to participate and can be urged to spend the day elsewhere if a block party would seem intrusive. The next step is to find out if the town or city has any ordinances regarding neighbourhood parties or if a permit needs to be granted. Because hosting a block party often means closing the street to traffic, it’s adviseable to visit the town hall and find out about the legality of such an event and the guidelines that must be followed. This may include what time the “noise” should cease. Once approval has been granted, the creative ideas can start flowing.

Party planning Volunteers will be needed to handle the undertaking that is a block party. Funds also will have to be allocated for the event. Some towns have grants available for social events, but very often members of the community hosting the party simply donate an agreed on amount of money to be put toward the festivities. In addition to money, there are a few other areas of consideration. • Food: Resources can be combined to have food catered or to purchase items that will be cooked in bulk and enjoyed by all. However, it is often easier for each individual household to be in charge of their meal for the day. Barbecue fare is some of the simplest food to feed a crowd, and backyard grills can be moved to the street with grill masters donning aprons and spatulas. • Refreshments: Again, homeowners may want to have their own coolers filled with soft drinks. alcoholic beverages are commonly found at social events, they shouldn’t be the cornerstone of the celebration. All it takes is one inebriated individual who gets out of hand for law enforcement to close down the party. • Entertainment: Chances are block party attendants will want to be entertained. There should be activities for both adults and children. Party rental businesses can be contacted for rides, moonbounce inflatables, clowns or magicians, and carnival-inspired games. A DJ or band can be hired for musical entertainment. If budgets don’t allow for that, put one person in charge of music and have a playlist of songs available. • Accessories: It’s often the little details that can make block parties fun. Party supply stores carry a host of items that can coordinate with a theme. Online retailers may offer some better deals on bulk items that can be used, such as glow sticks or necklaces. • Advertising: Invitations or postings around the neighbourhood are a must to spread word of the event.

Wrap Up Each neighbour should be in charge of cleaning up his or her property, as well as the area of the street immediately in front of his or her home. If budget allows, a sanitation service can be hired to sweep the street afterward. The party organizer should be sure to send around an itemized list of what was purchased and how the donated money was spent to promote goodwill among the neighbours. If there are funds left over, these can be allocated to next year’s event if it was a success. Thank you notes to volunteers and donors can be sent out as well.

Senior Lakers sink to last place FOOTBALL CAMP RETURNS The Western Canadian All-Star Clan football camp is returning to Simon Fraser University for its 27th year July 6-9. The fourday camp for junior (11-14 years old) and senior (15-17) players is comprised of six practices and a controlled scrimmage on the final day. For more information go to www.sfu.ca/camps.

The Burnaby Lakers dropped a 7-5 loss Saturday to the Langley Thunder, then they dropped to last place in the Western Lacrosse Association. The Lakers gave up four unanswered goals in the first period to the Thunder who moved two points ahead of Burnaby in the standings. Tanner Lemaire and Matt Quinton got the Lakers back to within two halfway through the second period but Athan Iannucci’s power play goal rebuilt the Thunder’s cushion to three heading into the final period. Burnaby fought back to within a goal when Rory McDade and Lemaire beat Thunder goalkeeper Brodie MacDonald 13 seconds apart, six minutes into the third. Alex

Turner gave Langley the cushion they’d need with less than three minutes left in the game. Quinton made it close again with his second goal of the game 1:05 later, but Rob Van Beek sealed the win for Langley when he scored with 58 seconds left on the clock. Quinton added two assists to his pair of goals to lead the Lakers, who outshot Langley 45-41. The loss was their second in as many nights, after they lost 9-7 to the league-leading Victoria Shamrocks on Friday. In that game, it was the Lakers who opened the scoring with four straight goals in the first period. But the Shamrocks, who’d dropped a 10-8 decision to New Westminster the night before after a similarly cold start, answered with

The point is to find yourself.

authority. They scored five straight goals before the end of the first, then added two more in the first seven minutes of the second to wrest control. Trevor Moore had a hat trick for the Lakers, while Shaun Dhaliwal scored twice and added an assist. Burnaby will have a chance to exact revenge on Langley, and perhaps climb out of last place, when they host the Thunder at Copeland Arena on Friday.

Juniors fall to Timbermen For one period, there was little to choose between the Burnaby Lakers and Nanaimo Timbermen in their BC Junior A Lacrosse League game Sunday at Copeland Arena. The problem is, there’s three periods in a game and the Lakers couldn’t score in those frames while Nanaimo found the net seven times to beat Burnaby 12-5.

The onslaught sandwiched the middle period in which each team scored five times. But by then the Timbermen had already built a 3-0 lead. They made it 5-0 6:13 into the second on goals by Stu Mills and Quinn Smith. Blake Mattinson finally lit the red light for Burnaby two minutes later. Down 8-5 going into the third, but holding a narrow advantage in shots, the Lakers then gave up four unanswered goals in the third. The loss dropped Burnaby to seventh place in the BCJALL standings, two points behind Nanaimo. But the moved back into a tie with the T-Men with an 8-6 victory in Langley over the Thunder. Both Nanaimo and Burnaby are 4-8. • The unbeaten Coquitlam Adanacs are the top-ranked junior lacrosse team in Canada in the latest top 10 rankings released on Monday.
