Ready, Set, Hunt! Eleven-year-old Alayna Estridge shot her first deer, a 10-point buck, while hunting with her grandfather Rick Estridge on Saturday.

SIREN––Sandy Clark, the Shelter Manager at the Faith House Shelter in Siren, said a WHEDA grant of $7,500 is “like a million bucks to us.” She said the money will go towards replacing the ramp in front of the shelter, fixing the front deck, replacing flooring in the office and replacing kitchen cabinets. The Faith House in Siren, located at 7764 W. Main Street, provides shelter for homeless families residing in Burnett and surrounding counties. The facility can support two families at a time. Their goal is to promote self-sufficiency by providing a safe and secure environment, giving individuals the opportunity to overcome unresolved issues. Through education, individuals are encouraged to be responsible for themselves and others. During their 30-90 day stay they identify any immediate needs and develop a housing stabilization plan for the family. Brian Schimming, of Wisconsin Hous-

The Siren Police Department is looking for information regarding several calls they received about gunfire last week. “The Siren Police Department is looking for information from anyone who may know about illegal activity that occurred on Nov. 13 during the times of 6–6:20 p.m. on 3rd Ave. in the Village of Siren,” A press release stated from the Siren Police Department. “This area encompasses 3rd Avenue from County Road B to Lofty Pines Drive. We had received numerous calls of someone discharging a weapon on 3rd Avenue.” Chief Sybers said they were on scene within moments of getting the call but they could not locate a

suspect. Witnesses told Sybers they heard about 12 shots and he believes they were fired 15 feet apart while driving down 3rd Avenue. Police found eight casings from a 9 mm firearm. The only damage they found was a couple of holes in a garage. “I couldn’t even reach them,” Sybers said. “So it must’ve been 10 or 12 feet from the ground.” Tribal PD and the Sheriff’s Department are also assisting with the case. “Tribal was great, they went around and helped with canvassing the area,” Sybers said. “We must have walked the road three or four times that night looking for anything we could find.” Anyone with information on this activity, please contact the Siren Police Department at 715-349-7181.

The grant is given out by the WHEDA Foundation. Grants awarded statewide during the WHEDA Foundation’s annual Housing Grant Program competition help housing providers build new facilities or make improvements to their existing facilities. “The grant money will be put to very good use as the shelter is going to replace a handicap ramp and also make much-needed cabinet and counter upgrades,” said Schimming who presented an oversized check at the announcement. “Vital improvements made to affordable housing for the neediest of the needy, and valued construction jobs are created as grant recipients hire contractors to

WEBB LAKE––Walking into Webb Lake’s Community Center last Thursday, one could not help but notice the marvelous combination of smells and the volunteers bustling back and forth getting everything ready. Then there was the perfectly aligned row of crockpots. Webb Lake held their annual Thanksgiving dinner Thursday, Nov. 15. Sharon Knowler has been putting on the event for six years, which is traditionally held

Once it got too big, she let the Webb Lake bars take over the event. “And it has only continued to get bigger,” Abbott admitted. “But I’m taking credit for the first 20 years.” At that point, a voice in the crowd yelled out, “the best 20 years.” Last year the honored guests were S. Sgt. County Supervisor Steve Austin was at the dinner and said it’s a great thing to bring the community closer. “We all have our own things going on and y’know how it is, you see the same people over and over again,” Austin said. “This is a way to see the people you don’t see all the time and re-connect with them.” He added, “it’s a really great event for

“One lady knitted these for the Veterans, so I’m going to go pass them out,” Knowler said. As she walked away someone stopped her and said, “You put this on? This is my first time, it all looks wonderful.” Austin said, “Sharon does a wonderful job with this event and the foods

‘It’s a lifestyle’ I woke up this morning to a fresh sheet of snow in front of my house, like most of you probably did. My street was not plowed but Highway 70 looked and was pretty good during my 20-minute drive in to the office. It is really great that when it snows in the middle of the night the county doesn’t shut down and decide against plowing the roads. The suburbs of Milwaukee struggle with this a lot this time of year. They would rather load the streets with salt and hope that takes care of it. Also I’m glad people up here don’t all of a sudden forget how to drive when it starts to snow. It alSentinel ways amazes me that people down south just forget everything about Editor driving when it gets cold. Jonathan Richie So let’s take a moment to thank the highway department and their combination of plows, salt and brine mixture for making sure the main roads in the county are cleared for the morning commutes. A church sign told me as I was driving in this morning that Thanksgiving is not a day, it’s a lifestyle. It is important to remember with everything going on in our own lives that it’s important to give back. Even in times when it feels like things are falling apart I remember a saying I heard as a kid, someone has always got it worse than you or someone could always use a helping hand. I learned it in Sunday School growing up that giving is much more important than receiving this time of year. Last year I gave a list of my top five foods for Thanksgiving, starting with five it was Brussels sprouts (or any green vegetable), the obligatory dinner roll, turkey and stuffing. And the number one Thanksgiving food is pumpkin pie. However, stuffing and pie are almost a tie. This time of year is great for lovers of Stove Top stuffing and I love Stove Top. It is the most wonderful side dish this time of year. I don’t care if you shove it in the turkey or make it on its own. If it was all not empty carbs and loaded with sodium, I would eat it year-round. It is a fairly idiot-proof dish, which is why grocery stores should have it on sale year-round. All a person has to do with Stove Top is boil some water, add some butter then add the contents of the box, take it off the heat and cover it for five minutes. Just make sure you stir it well or you’ll have two really flavorful bites and about ten really bland forks full of soggy bread crumbs. It’s so easy even your cooking illiterate (insert family member here) can figure it out. Other randomness It’s nice when the Packers play on Thursday, it really frees up my weekend. Lastly, The Beatles re-released “The Beatles” commonly referred to as “The White Album” and since the mega-release is five and a half hours long it has taken me some time to listen to it an adequate amount. But my thoughts on that will be in this space next week. Gotta question? Gotta tip? It’s easy to contact me, give me a call at 715-463-2341 or shoot me an email editor@burnettcountysentinel.com.

Look me in the eye Two weeks ago, I shared my thoughts about trying to bridge the widening partisan divide in our nation. In the week that followed, I was contacted by two readers: one conservative, the other progressive who were able to agree on at least one thing — I was naïve and had missed the mark. I also had a revelation reading essays in the Nov. 5 issue of Time magazine on the issue of partisanship and I’d like to share a few thoughts with you. In TIME, National Review writer David French said “This fall, a group From the called More in Common released Publisher’s a comprehensive survey of AmerDesk ica’s “hidden tribes,” seeking to understand the sources of American Tom Stangl polarization. It concluded that much of America’s political anger was driven by what it called “the wings,” which are flanked by the 8 percent of Americans who are “progressive activists” and the 6 percent who are “devoted conservatives.” “The members of the tribes on each end of the spectrum share some common characteristics. “They’re disproportionately white, they’re well off, and they’re intensely engaged in politics—roughly twice as likely to list politics as a “hobby” than the average American. They’re motivated. They have means. And they focus many of those resources and much of that energy opposing a political enemy they view as truly dangerous. “This is a moment of profound historic importance. For the blessed, privileged class of Americans, the challenge is clear. A mass cultural crisis demands a mass cultural response. And if loathing for the distant partisan motivates us more than love for the close neighbor, I’d argue that we’re failing that test. That is the hate that will ultimately shame us all.” In TIME, U.S. Military veteran and author Phil

It is a display of respect and tolerance, which make(s) clear that you are engaging in a conversation, not delivering a last word. Then we feel on certain ground. But we’re never on certain ground. And while abandoning a process of thoughtful deliberation can win you power, what it can never do is give you the hope of using that power wisely.” Want to make a change? CAPITOL REPORT

Voters show support for closing ‘dark store’ loophole, legalizing marijuana WISPOLITICS.COM

Advocates who want pro-marijuana legislation and a bill to rein in “dark stores” are hoping for progress in the next two years. That’s after the approval of various local advisory referendums around the state on Nov. 6. Voters in more than 20 counties, cities and villages across the state threw their support behind referendums to urge lawmakers to pass legislation closing the so-called “dark store” loophole. The measures received widespread support. The narrowest margin — 19.5 percent — came from Jefferson County, where around 60 percent of respondents voted to back legislation on the topic, while 40 percent opposed it. The biggest margin of victory came from Dane County, where 91.8 percent of voters backed legislation and only 8.2 percent didn’t — a margin of 83.6 percent. The advisory referendums — from two villages, four cities and 17 counties across the state — came after lawmakers earlier this session debated

legislation to prevent stores from basing their property value on vacant properties or “dark stores,” which have lower property value and can be taxed less. Two bills on the issue each failed to clear the Legislature, including a lastditch effort in the Assembly to amend a bill to include language on the topic. The ballot questions followed a campaign from the League of Wisconsin Municipalities, Wisconsin Counties Association and Wisconsin Towns Association against the socalled loophole, which included a “call to action” component for local governments to pass resolutions this fall. Wisconsin Counties Association Executive Director Mark O’Connell touted the widespread support, saying the results “show that this is a common-sense issue.” “The voters have spoken, and now we encourage the Governor-elect and the Legislature to take up this issue and close the dark store loopholes,” he said in a news release. “This is a tax shift, mainly to homeowners, and we encourage our state officials to act in January.”

But Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce Director of Tax, Transportation and Legal Affairs Cory Fish countered in a statement that the results “proved nothing more than the fact that municipalities and counties have a talent for writing biased and factually inaccurate questions for the ballot.” “The so-called ‘dark stores’ loophole is a myth,” he said. “In reality, the tax shift is from homeowners to businesses, and these proposals would simply legalize the unlawful actions of overly aggressive assessors who are looking to increase taxes on businesses of all sizes in their communities.” And the state’s most populous counties also voted in favor of legalizing, regulating and taxing marijuana. Voters in Dane and Milwaukee counties were asked to weigh in on legal cannabis on Nov. 6 through similar advisory referendum questions. Fourteen other counties and two cities also had marijuana-related questions on the ballot, all of which passed easily. “It’s definitely the biggest win for cannabis ever in Wisconsin,” said Gary Storck,

an activist and former lobbyist who’s been involved with the cannabis legalization effort in the state. He notes about 1 million Wisconsinites voted in favor of marijuana. “That’s almost as many people that voted for Evers, or Walker,” he said. “You can’t put that back in the bottle.” Dane County’s question asked voters if they think marijuana should be legalized, taxed and regulated for adults 21 or older, in the same way alcohol is treated. Milwaukee County’s question didn’t mention alcohol, but was largely the same. Nearly 400,000 of Milwaukee County’s 950,000 residents answered the marijuana question, with over 260,000 voting yes. And about half of Dane County’s 530,000 residents voted on marijuana, with about 221,000 in favor. The two cities with cannabis referendums, Racine and Waukesha, had very different questions. In Waukesha, voters were asked if cannabis should be legalized in the state for medical purposes, and regulated in the same manner as prescription drugs. Over 76 percent voted

in favor, with 23,731 voting yes and 7,243 voting no. In Racine, voters were asked about marijuana through four different questions, dealing with recreational use, medical use, taxation and decriminalization. Medical use was more popular than recreational use, but voters were in favor of all four questions. Many of these questions were put forth by local officials at the urging of their constituents. Some of those voters were motivated by a desire for medical cannabis availability, either for themselves or their loved ones. “The public was engaged, showing up in great numbers to testify in favor of these referendums,” Storck added. “There’s lots of momentum going.” The Capitol Report is written by editorial staff at WisPolitics.com, a nonpartisan, Madison-based news service that specializes in coverage of government and politics, and is distributed for publication by members of the Wisconsin Newspaper Association. WILD CHOW

Thankful for fresh veggies, especially with winter in full swing Even though winter is upon us, we can still eat fresh veggies. That’s amazing! I don’t know about you, but I’m very thankful for the fresh vegetables and fruits we have available when we live in a cold climate half the year. I try to imagine what it was like for our ancestors, parents, or great-grandparents to make meals or go without fresh fruits and vegetables for so long. I remember having many conversations with my grandmother about the Wild Chow first time she ate a banana or saying how exciting it was to eat green letLisa Erickson tuce during the winter—something she couldn’t do when she was growing up. She always brought it up at dinnertime. I know she was trying to get me to eat my vegetables, but I loved hearing about the olden days. Thinking about how food arrived on my plate was fascinating, and still is. I’m coming to the end of my summer garden produce supply. What remains is now limp and unappeal-

ing. I’m off to the grocery store to stock up! I am very thankful for grocers, truckers, farmers northern and southern, airplanes, grandmothers, and so much more! How about you? What are you thankful for? Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Wood River raises levy limit for new town hall & shop JONATHAN RICHIE EDITOR@BURNETTCOUNTYSENTINEL.COM

WOOD RIVER–– At a special board meeting right before their monthly meeting, the electors of Wood River voted to increase the levy limit and approve the 2019 budget last week. The increase in the levy limit will be $66,655 for 20 years and will be used to finance and build a new town hall and shop. “We have a town hall, and it’s antiquated,” said Wood River Chairman Joel Johnson. Twenty-eight Wood River residents were at the meeting and voted 16-12 in favor of raising the levy limit. Town Supervisor Daryl Wedin was the only opposing vote on the board. Some residents were unhappy with how the proposal came before the elec-

tors, many saying they weren’t given proper notice on the new building. “There should have been a special meeting before tonight to learn about the project,” one resident said. Another person commented that there should have been more notice about this vote because the town is comprised of 952 people, and 28 were about to vote on this issue. “What about the people that aren’t here because maybe they don’t read the paper and didn’t see this?” he asked the board. Town Clerk Raylene Swanson pointed out there could be issues with the current town hall if a new clerk takes over that role. “The clerk doesn’t have to live in town, so people may have to drive 30-45 minutes to drop off stuff with the clerk or to go look up something with the treasurer,” Swanson said. Another issue is that voting ma-

chines must remain in a heated area. The Wood River Town Hall is not adequate, so they must be stored at the clerk’s home. One elector said it was a good idea that the board was waiting until they had all the information on the proposal before bringing the topic to the electors for a vote. Another group of residents said approving this levy increase now and building a new town hall and shop was better than waiting another 20 years. Before the electors voted, Architect, Craig Selander explained the aspects of the proposed new town hall and shop as well as answered questions. He began by explaining that the current town hall has little insulation in the walls, limited electricity capabilities, and no indoor plumbing. The newly proposed town hall will be at the same location as their current town hall. The building will be the

town hall and maintenance building. It will have indoor plumbing, offices for the town clerk and treasurer. It will also cost around $788,000 to build with total costs, including interest at 4.5 percent, making the full price around $1.3 million which will be paid over the next 20 years. Johnson said the math works out that if a house is appraised at $100,000, it will see a $62 annual levy increase. Selander advised the board that they should approve the design within the next month and that the timing for this project is key to keeping costs down. He added that costs could fluctuate 10 percent up or down, approximately $70,000. “After you complete and approve the design, you’re going to want to bid out the project in February/March and then start construction in spring,” Selander explained. “Contractors get busy, and prices will go as we get later into the year.”

JONATHAN RICHIE | SENTINEL

Chairman Johnson said staying in the current town hall will mean the town will “stay in the 19th century.”

FIEDLER FORD, INC.

WEBSTER—Preceding the monthly Webster Village Board meeting, the Village held their 2019 Budget Public Hearing. The 2019 budget reflects a 2.69 percent increase in revenue and expenditures over the 2018 year or an amount of $16,650. This number equates to an estimated mill rate of an assessed milled rate of $12.62 or taxes of $1,262 per $100,000. In reviewing the numbers, Tim Maloney commented, “I just want to say that the Village has done a fine job of holding costs down.” In regular business, the Village board swore in a new police officer, discussed changes to fees and licensing, and addressed rumors. Michael Zajac, a 2003 Webster High School graduate, officially took his oath of office in front of the board. Zajac has a criminal justice degree from Columbia Southern University and is a recent graduate of the Criminal Justice-Law Enforcement Academy at Wisconsin Indianhead Technical Institute. He filled the full-time officer position and began his field training on Oct. 22. He is also the assistant chief at Danbury Volunteer Fire Department. “I’m very blessed to be given the opportunity to serve the Village of Webster. The village has a great new Chief to work for and great officers to work with as well. I’m looking forward to meet lots of new people, “ Zajac said. Land-use permits and variance/rezoning application fees came up for discussion. Currently, a building permit- which covers alterations, decks, sheds, and additions- is $35. The average rate for a permit in

similar municipalities is $50. Similarly, the current zoning application is $25. The fee for the statute-required publishing of the application is equal to if not more than that. In comparing conditional zoning application fees locally, Siren charges $250. Grantsburg’s base fee is $115, but then there is an additional charge based on the value of the work to be done. The board approved increases to both application fees. The land-use permit fees will increase to $50 and variance/rezoning applications to $100. Charlie Weiss advised the board that he had been approached recently regarding the library. “There is a vicious rumor going around that the library is in financial trouble, and that the Village is trying to let it go under, so we can tear it up and build a new (Village office). It wasn’t just one person, but three.” Not only is this not true, but the library has raised enough funds on its own to fund three yearly payments. “There is no plan to tear down the library,” emphasized President Jeff Roberts. “They are one of the most fiscally responsible crews that we have. They’re going to have their debt paid off early, the way it looks.” In other items: In further discussion regarding employee compensation on holidays, International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) representative had recommended a rate of double time with the caveat of a minimum of four hours worked. The board agreed that if an employee was called in on a holiday, they felt the double-time compensation should apply with no minimum. Their proposal will be discussed with the IUOE prior to final approval..

Highway department finishing up projects, preparing for winter JONATHAN RICHIE EDITOR@BURNETTCOUNTYSENTINEL.COM

BURNETT COUNTY––The last load of road salt came down from Superior last Tuesday as the Highway Department gets ready for another winter. “Now we are fully stocked for what’s coming. I won’t even use the “w” word,” Highway Commissioner Mike Hoefs said at the Infrastructure committee meeting last week. Hoefs reported that the paving on County Road H is complete and they were scheduled to complete shoulder work last week. He also said the State project on Highway 77 from State Road 35 to the Washburn County line would be crack sealed in the spring. He then brought up the bridge program that is run by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and how it is bogged down in bureaucracy. “The way they set it up, is the process takes four to five years to get the project done, when it should take a third of that time.” Hoefs said. “Also, about 45 percent of costs go to administrative costs.” Hoefs explained when he worked in the public sector, about 7 to 13 percent goes to administrative costs. “It’s ridiculous,” Hoefs commented. “I think that 80 to 90 percent of the project costs should go to the road work.” He also reported that all bridges over 20 feet have been inspected, which

sparked a conversation about bridges that may not have been inspected. ‘IT’S EVERY MAN FOR THEMSELVES IN DISTRICT 17’ That was how County Supervisor Duane Johnson described one of the bridges in his District, which includes the Towns of Dewey and Roosevelt. “It’s right on Town Hall Road, just south of Oak Road,” Johnson said at the infrastructure committee meeting last week. Hoefs said he would be able to send somebody out there later that day to get a look at the bridge. “Tell him not to park his truck on the bridge,” Johnson said. Hoefs asked Johnson how long the bridge was to see if it met the standards for regular inspections. “I held the tape measurer, and it was 20 feet, 1 inch,” Johnson admitted. FRIENDS OF GANDY DANCER TRAIL Bob Hanson of the newly formed Friends of the Gandy Dancer Trail spoke during public comments. He explained the effect ATV use has on the trail. “ATV’s have the ability to cause great deterioration to the Gandy,” Hanson stated. “They move on the gravel, making it looser. That forms puddles on the trail and those do damage over time. That, paired with when ATV’s spin out their tires, creates ruts on the trail that are not easily fixed. It all adds

over time.” He also thanked the committee for keeping the Gandy Dancer Trail open for the summer for foot and bike traffic only. After the meeting, Hanson said, “there are almost more places to drive ATV’s in the county than cars.” IN OTHER ITEMS: • Gary Faught, Maintenance Supervisor, said they had issues with the plumbing system in the jail. He said

brass parts are aging and they have begun replacing them with a new system, which will continue to be brass and not plastic. “This new system is going to last a long time. This one is 33 years old, so it’s time to go,” Faught said. • Chuck Shultz of the Airport reported they had around 800 people attend Siren Nationals in September.

Burnett County citizens Grantsburg man in need of kidney asked to complete Community Health Survey KASSIE MULLINS SENTINEL STAFF

Community members are asked to share their opinion about the health needs of Burnett County by taking a brief survey. The survey results will be used by Burnett County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS)-Public Health, Burnett Medical Center (BMC), and the Healthy Burnett coalition to guide activities to improve health. Public health departments and non-profit hospitals are required by law to complete a health needs assessment and improvement process every 3-5 years using community input. The process enables partners to gain a clear understanding of the county’s needs and assets, and then to proactively and strategically act to improve health. The survey is an important piece in understanding community needs. The survey consists of 11 questions and should take less than five minutes to complete. It is available online or in paper form. To complete the online survey, go to www.surveymonkey.com/r/burnetthealthsurvey. Paper surveys are available at libraries, clinics, senior center, other public businesses and Burnett County Government Center. For more specific locations, visit www. healthyburnett.org. “We are asking community members to take an active role in identifying our top health issues,” said Sarah Miller, Interim Health Officer and WIC Director, Burnett County DHHS-Public Health. “Then, next spring we will invite community members and key stakeholders to review the results of the assessment and help prioritize the needs. From there, a plan of action will be created to address the top needs identified.” Along with the opinions and themes shared through the survey, the health assessment looks at county and state data on disease and death rates, health behaviors, access to care, environmental factors, and socioeconomic factors. “The survey results help us understand what the community sees as our top health issues. We use that information, along with public health data, to make decisions about where, as a community, we should focus our health improvement efforts,” said Halle Pardun, Marketing Director at Burnett Medical Center. The last assessment, completed in 2016, identified alcohol and other drug abuse as the top issue in Burnett County. The existing coalition, Healthy Burnett brings together key stakeholders to enhance how the community addresses identified needs. If people are interested in learning more about Healthy Burnett’s efforts, we encourage them to visit the Healthy Burnett website: www.healthyburnett.org. Questions regarding the survey and Healthy Burnett can be directed to Halle Pardun, Marketing Director at Burnett Medical Center (715-463-7285), Angel Morgan, Birth to 3 Services Coordinator/Public Health Specialist, Burnett County DHHS-Public Health (715-3497600 Ext. 1324), or Sarah Miller, Interim Health Officer and WIC Director at Burnett County DHHS-Public Health (715-349-7600, ext. 1952).

Chris Fickbohm was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was 21 years old; now he is 46 and in desperate need of a kidney donor as well as a pancreas transplant. To make matters more complicated, Fickbohm has one of the rarest blood types, Type O Negative. The good thing is that the donor can either be blood type O Negative or O Positive. “About four or five months ago, his kidney was barely functioning at 11 percent, so the sooner he can find a kidney donor the better,” said his wife, Kristina Fickbohm. The Fickbohm family is a blended family with five schoolaged children and two older kids. One of their children, Donavin Czech, aged 8, wrote a letter to Santa saying that all he wanted for Christmas this year is for Santa to bring his father a new kidney. “The hardest part of this process is watching him work so hard and yet knowing how sick he is. He doesn’t complain. He goes to work all day and does what he has to do to provide for his family, and then he comes home and throws the football around with the kids in the yard,” said Kristina. On Nov. 3, the family held a fundraiser at The Den in Grantsburg that went exceptionally well. There were door prizes, a silent auction and lots of laughs that day. Kristina said, “The Den went above and beyond to make sure that we had a great experience. We are incredibly grateful for our friends, family, and community members for showing up and making the event a success. We are starting to look at life a little different now. Instead of taking things for granted, I have come to realize that the good moments mean so much more than they ever have before.” Even if you don’t fit the match to be a donor, keep a lookout for somebody that does. For more information on how SUBMITTED to donate, visit mayoclinic.org/livingdonor or call 1-866Chris and Kristina Fickbohm with their kids Tara, 227-2569. Community Referral Agency is awarded $7,000 from 100 Women Who Care SIREN—The philanthropic group 100 Women Who Care– Polk/Burnett held their second quarterly meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at Northwoods Crossing Event Center in Siren. The meeting, welcoming 21 new members, was a tremendous success and the evening culminated with a $7,000 donation being made to Community Referral Agency(CRA). Community Referral Agency’s mission is “To eliminate domestic and sexual violence and its negative effects in our community by providing shel-

ter and services that promote peace, justice and safety”. In 2017, CRA provided 6,029 bed nights to survivors of domestic and sexual abuse and their families, and provided 18,087 meals to shelter residents and their families. Cheri Moats spoke on behalf of the group and explained they are in need of a new, larger van to help transport the survivors and their families to the safe places they need to be. 100 Women Who Care - Polk/Burnett are proud to have contributed to their worthy cause.

100 Women Who Care - Polk/ Burnett meets quarterly, on the second Wednesday evening of February, May, August and November. At each meeting, three local charities are allowed to give a brief presentation to educate members about their cause. At the end of the presentations, each member votes anonymously for the charity they feel is most deserving to receive the groups quarterly donation. Three different charities will be chosen at random from all applicants to present each quarter. All

charities who apply must operate in Polk and/or Burnett, Wisconsin counties and have 501(c)(3) status. Once a charity is selected to receive a donation, they will be removed from the eligible pool for two calendar years. If a charity is chosen to present, but is not chosen as the selected charity, they will be added back to the drawing at the next quarterly meeting. 100 Women Who Care - Polk/ Burnett is accepting new members and non-profit group applications. If you are inter-

ested in joining the group or submitting a charity application, please send an inquiry to 100wwc.pb@gmail.com. You can also “Like” the group on Facebook at “100 Women Who Care - Polk/Burnett” for information on upcoming meetings and donations made. Founding member Julie Hall said “We are thrilled with the momentum of our group and are looking forward to continuing to make impactful donations to different causes in our community. We have been able to donate at total of $11,900 in our first two meetings and I’m excited to watch that number rise!” The group will hold their next meeting on Wednesday, Feb.13, 2019 at Northwoods Crossing Event Center in Siren. The founding members would like to recognize and thank Jake and Holly Mangelsen for generously donating the use of the event center for the quarterly meetings. 100 Women Who Care–Polk/ Burnett present a check to the Community Referral Agency.

If you’ve recently left rehab, you already know you’ve got a long, hard road ahead of you. But just because there will be bumps along the way doesn’t mean you can’t smooth things out. Go “pro with your diet. Try to fi ll your plate with plenty of prebiotic fruits and vegetables, reduce your sugar intake and take a probiotic. Prebiotics are the food the probiotics (good gut bacteria) consume in order to thrive in your gut. Without prebiotics, the good bacteria won’t colonize properly, and that can wreak havoc on your overall health. Rise with the roosters. Early risers are typically more productive and get better sleep. Getting out of bed before the sun comes up gives you an opportunity to exercise, plan your day, and knock a few things off of your to-to list. Getting up an hour earlier than normal can even encourage you to get to bed sooner, which may keep you close to home and out of trouble. Surround yourself with positive people. Happiness is a choice. Make a point to spend time with people who make you feel good about yourself and encourage healthy behaviors. When you’re in recovery, it’s easy to let your past negative actions weigh you down. For example, if you spend time with your old drinking buddies, you are more likely to relapse. But if you use your time wisely by watching a movie with your spouse, playing with your kids, or volunteering, you give yourself purpose—which can lead to feelings of happiness and help you avoid negative situations. Get organized. Finally, organize your home and your schedule in a way that helps you destress. Stress is a major trigger and one that will have you leaning toward relapse over recovery. This is certainly not a full list of everything that will aid in your recovery. But paying attention to your gut, getting up early, sticking close to positive influences, and staying organized are a few simple things you can do to help maintain your sobriety.

WEEKLY WAG News and Updates from the Humane Society of Burnett County

Looking for a mild homebody to spend the cold nights with? Harley is a two-year-old female tortoiseshell shorthair who is looking for a cozy, quiet spot to call home. She has light green eyes and is front-paw declawed. Harley does take a little H bit of time and patience b tto let her warm up to new ffriends, but once she does h her personality comes o out to shine. She likes tto play with balls, toys a and lights; the exercise w would do her a bit of good b because right now she’s a c chunky nine pounds on a seven or eight-pound Harley frame. Harley also likes to snuggle and talk with her person, and once she claims you, you are in for life. She would be best as an only kitty in a quiet environment. If you like quiet evenings at home, Harley would be the perfect companion for you. As we gather with our families for the Thanksgiving meal, let’s not forget to watch out for a few things to keep all our family members happy and healthy. Overindulging in rich foods can lead to tummy upset, and it is hard to be in a thankful mood while cleaning up messes on the floor. Make sure your pets cannot get into poultry bones, yeast dough or other foodstuffs that can harm them. Decorations sometimes are appealing to look at; however, make sure your pet does not find them too irresistible. And watch to make sure as friends are coming in that other friends are not getting out. Just a few small ideas to help it be a safer day for the entire family. HSBC is taking part in #GivingTuesday. If you are not into Twitter, Instagram, or Snapchat, there is another way you can raise funds for the shelter. FIREWOOD Dry/Green

Cut & Split or 8’ Oak or Mixed Hardwoods

Willows and their fuzzy seed heads “What do you miss the most about Alaska?” is a common question for me these days. It comes up so frequently in fact, that I added my answer to the end of the “Adventures in Alaska” slideshow I’ve been presenting at local venues. The answer? Avens. Mountain avens, entireleaf avens, and yellow dryas are all flowers in the genus Dryas whom I encountered frequently throughout Alaska. Their flowers are beautiful, with silky white or yellow petals and sunny yellow centers, and their habitats on tundra slopes and fields of glacial gravel are fun to explore. It’s their seed heads that captured my heart and my imagination, though. Like an elegant dandelion, each of their many, small, dry, seeds comes with its own fuzzy parasol. As the seeds are maturing, those feathery styles spiral from silky, pink swirls into shimmering white fairy puffs. Truffula trees from Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax spring to mind immediately, and the fuzzy tufts also conjure images of Einstein’s signature hairdo. I delighted in taking photos of these

“Avens tree,” she had labeled the photos, and wanted not only and identification, but to feed my obsession clearly evident above. The photo confused me. Avens doesn’t grow in Wisconsin. The only Dryas here was the Younger Dryas, a period of colder temperatures 12,900 to 11,700 years before present. It was the last hurrah of the glaciers, and it’s named after the abundance of Dryas flowers preserved in Scandinavian lake sediments of that age. Insect galls? Clematis? What could these be? But when Vivianne brought a sample into the Museum, one look at the slender, orangey twig and single, dark purplish scale covering each bud told me it was a willow. The fluffy, avens-like baubles she’d noticed are simply their dried out catkins with fuzzy seeds still clinging on. Of course. The willow family—Salicaceae— also contains cottonwoods. We can easily imagine willows being fuzzy in the spring, as their catkins expand and the fine, gray hairs protecting their emerging flowers form the phenomenon we

amusing little beauties throughout my summer. Rain or shine, they brought me joy. I didn’t start out to tell you all about avens, though. That just slipped in. This is actually a story about a mystery plant that a Museum member brought me a photo of last week. Taken of the shrubs in a soggy road ditch, her focus was on some curious, spikey clusters that decorated the slender twigs.

think of as pussy willows. After bees have pollinated those flowers while greedily making use of one of the earliest sources of pollen and nectar, the plant begins to develop seeds. Cottonwoods use wind instead of bees to pollinate their flowers, but the result is very similar: both cottonwoods and willows produce Lilliputian seeds attended by downy, flight-ready fluff. Cotton-

wood seeds—and the related aspen and poplar seeds, too—are hard to miss when they create summer snowdrifts on your lawn. While many allergy sufferers grumble during this phase, the fluff is not the cause of allergies—the pollen that created those seeds was the problem. I’m not sure why we so rarely notice the second fuzzy stage of willows around here. My standard response to having missed any late spring or early summer phenomenon is that it must have happened during mosquito season, when I don’t spend much time walking slowly through the woods. Happily, since my summer in Alaska lacked both mosquitoes and a bicycle, I had ample opportunity to hike among wildflowers in all their stages of development. Willows are common on the tundra, and several of the fourteen Salix species that grow in Denali National Park are delightfully tiny, easy to observe at eye-level if you’re willing to belly-crawl (which, of course, I am). For example, netleaf willow grows as a creeping shrub. Its deeply embossed leaves are a normal size, but it doesn’t grow more than a few inches high. Its catkins are actually larger than those of pussy willows, and stick jauntily upright. By late August when I traveled up to the tundra on the North Slope of Alaska, I was able to enjoy both the lemony yellow fall colors of willow leaves as well as the fuzzy fingers of their catkins gone to seed. A few of Vivianne’s funny little willow catkins are still floating around my office, and they’re reminding me that avens-like delight can be found right here at home. The Pink Squirrel sparks intrigue downtown JONATHAN RICHIE EDITOR@BURNETTCOUNTYSENTINEL.COM

GRANTSBURG––“We had just finished painting the building when an old couple came out of the cafe and asked me ‘you’re not going to keep it that color are you?’,” Chris Carney said. “I told them ‘yes we are’ they just said ‘oh … okay.’” Carney and her husband, Allen, bought the building at 121 W. Madison Ave. in downtown Grantsburg in September and soon the painting and anticipation began. They are only open five days a month, usually the third weekend of the month. Their next sale will be Dec. 12 – 16. “We had people coming up and peeking in the windows weeks before we opened,” Carney said. “So we bought those curtains and opened them just a little bit every day until we opened. Carney said the name came from her Squirrel Squad that hunts “for treasures” all over the area. The store is managed by Dwayne Maier. He used to rent space in antique shops and other re-sale spaces. Carney makes it clear that The Pink Squirrel is not a thrift shop or a second-hand store. It is an occasional store that allows local vendors to come in and sell their products. She knew she wanted to bring on Maier to help run the store after they had worked together and 136 Vintage in St. Croix Falls “After that, the universe pretty much took control,” Maier said about how the store got started. This time of year, there is a lot of Christmas-themed items, including crazy Christmas sweaters.

the community. “The response has been 100 percent positive,” Jensen said. He added he heard around 35 compliments over the weekend. Scheunemann said she lives about 15 minutes south of Grantsburg. “We love it,” she stated. “I am super excited for what they have got here. The community has also been super excited about it.” One shopper explained that people are coming from all over to visit The Pink Squirrel. “We’re from St. Croix Falls and I’ve talked to people that are from Osceola. It’s just a great place to find interesting things,” Sue Mathews said. In October. the Pink Squirrel had 23 vendors for their five-day sale. In November they had 31 and next months’ sale will have 33 vendors – half from Grantsburg. “We will continue rotating what’s in our store. And I am so excited now because we actually have a waiting list of vendors trying to get in for January.”

“We have an entire section of ‘crazy Christmas sweaters,” Maier said. “I think they’re great. They used to be called ‘ugly sweaters’ but that was problematic, so now we have a section of those.” Wayne Jensen and Karen Scheunemann were vendors at the occasional sale this past weekend. They were both surprised and inspired by the support they have received from JONATHAN RICHIE | SENTINEL

Carney said this area at the front of the store is their staged area where they plan on changing on a regular basis to feature products from all of the different vendors. She calls it their Spotlight Section.

Sentinel selects ‘All County Volleyball Team’ GLEN SKIFSTAD SENTINEL SPORTS

This year was a very unique one in that there was a great amount of talent in our three schools for volleyball. Grantsburg made it to the State Tournament and Webster and Siren also made great strides in becoming teams to be reckoned with. Thus said, here we go with the First Team selections for the All County Team. From Webster, the Sentinel Sports team chose Summer Winkler and Hannah McDowell. Siren’s representatives are Julia Cederberg and Jade Horstman. The Pirates have Randi Siebenthal, Charli Siebenthal, Jenna McNally and Olivia Ohnstad. Both Summer and Hannah, from the Tigers, are sophomores and had impressive numbers. Summer had 270 kills, 48 aces and 230 digs. Hannah tallied 139 kills, 90 digs and 25 aces. Julia and Jade are both seniors at Siren. Julia was an “all around player and captain” for the Dragons. “She had a serving percentage of 88.9 percent and a hitting percentage of 28.3 percent with 114 kills for the year,” said her coach. “She is an amazing young woman who went through a lot this volleyball season.” In Siren’s second game vs Grantsburg, she played it “for her Mom and played the best game of her career.” Jade was also a captain for the Dragons and had a hitting percentage of 32.5 percent. Her serving was at 90.7 percent. “She led our team with 135 kills and was the one I would count on to make the great hit or pass the good pass right up to the setter,” shared her coach. For the Pirates, Randi, Charli and Jenna are seniors with Olivia being a junior. Randi had 65 aces, 254 kills with 332 digs to her credit. Charli’s resume this year shows 32 aces, 498 assists and 183 digs. Jenna’s tallies are 36 aces and 542 digs with Olivia chalking up 17 aces, 240 kills, 38 assisted blocks, and 88 digs. Jenna was named to the All-State division 3 first team as well as the All-Tournament team. Olivia made the honorable mention list for the All-State team. This is quite a team! Our Honorable Mention (or Second Team) consists of Kaitlyn Lee, Hannah Janssen, Brooke Hetfeld, Torrence Wols and Emma Zmuda (Tigers); Rylee O’Brien and Karlee Sybers (Dragons); and Linda Harmon, Olivia Brock, Brooke Quimby and McKenzie Rombach (Pirates). Kaitlyn had 240 assists, 51 aces, 42 kills with 161 digs. Hannah recorded 309 assists, 20 aces, 67 digs and 22 kills. Brooke tallied 121 kills, 75 digs and 32 aces. Torrence had 172 digs with 40 aces, and Emma Zmuda had 151 digs with 38 aces. These five girls are also just sophomores so Webster will be stronger yet next season. From the Dragons, Rylee was the leader of the team in assists, served a percentage of 93.4 and hit a percentage of 38.5 with 10 kills. “She is 5 feet nothing,” said her coach. Linda recorded 34 aces, 220 kills, with 225 digs for the Pirates. Olivia tallied 76 kills, 10 assisted blocks with 28 digs. Brooke pitched in with 123 kills, nine blocks, 22 assisted blocks, and 34 digs on the season. McKenzie racked up 338 assists as the Pirates’ second setter and served up 34 aces this season. The Sports Team chose Hanne Johnson of the Pirates as a Player to Watch as she is a freshman who played considerably. She looks to be a powerhouse hitter and is a strong presence at the net with her huge blocking skills. Congratulations to the Pirates in getting to State, quite an accomplishment in itself. Thank you, members of the Sentinel All County Team, for playing as you did, giving of yourselves for your coaches, your schools, your fans and for yourselves. Thank you, coaches, for your endless hours of planning, practice and efforts, along with your relationships with your players. Thank you, parents and family members, for your support of these athletes in their endeavors. And Thank You fans, for your cheering, your unending encouragement in support of these players. Have a great off season, everyone. Until then ...

Happy Giving Thanks Day!

Pastor Dale Van Deusen Trade River Evangelical

“Do you want more from your life? More happiness? Better health? Deeper relationships? Increased productivity? a website asks. Then, based on 40 research studies, it went on to list 31 benefits of an attitude of gratitude for us emotionally, socially, vocationally, physically, and personality. Singer Willie Nelson said, “When I started counting my blessings, my whole life turned around. The Pilgrims, who made more graves than houses, still found reasons to be thankful and to give thanks to God. Henry Van Dyke wrote: “Gratitude is the inward feeling of kindness received. Thank-

fulness is the natural impulse to express that feeling. Thanksgiving is the following of that impulse. Thanksgiving is an action word. So consider those to whom you might want to give thanks. For instance, give thanks to God for all His blessings. For what do you have that you have not received? You did not choose when or where or to whom you would be born. God did. I hope you are thankful to be alive. And God gave His Son Jesus so that you could have eternal life through faith in Him. If Jesus is your Savior you will be forever grateful for His gift of salvation. Give

SACRED HEART OF JESUS & MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH

thanks to God! William Arthur Ward said “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it. So take some time to thank God in prayer for His particular blessings in your life. Participate in a church Thanksgiving service and join your voice with others to sing to God with gratitude in your hearts. While enjoying your Thanksgiving meal with family and friends talk about some things each of you are thankful. “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.
