Alleged thieves in custody

Celebrating 239 years

GRANTSBURG—”A lucky break.” It’s how Jeff Schinzing, Grantsburg Police Chief, looks at the capture of the two thieves suspected in the break-in of the Wood River Pharmacy in Grantsburg in the early morning hours of June 29. “When the police search your vehicle and they find items reported stolen from the Wood River Pharmacy, it kind of makes you think ‘Maybe they had something to do with it,’” he pointed out. Justin Ladd, 32, and Sirae Kettula, 34, permanent address unknown, were pulled over in Brooklyn Park, Minn., for an unrelated traffic stop. The police ended up searching the vehicle, discovered the stolen goods and took the pair into custody. “We have not been able to talk with them yet,” Schinzing reported. “If they don’t fight extradition, they could be here by the end of the week.” By Todd Beckmann.

SHELL LAKE—Sure, those plump, juicy, melt-in-your-mouth strawberries are only available for a few weeks but residents and visitors alike flock to the Lindy’s Berries roadside stands each summer to get their fill. In its 36th season, Lindy’s Berries began in 1979. “My dad (Phil Lindeman) was an ag teacher and was always looking for a way to get us kids to work so we could put away money for college,” Jennifer Kunselman, who with husband Scott runs the business, explained. The farm actually started with raspberries but in the 1980s, the Lindeman’s added strawberries and the rest, as they say, is history. “In the mid-1990s we started working with the folks and then we officially took over the business in 2005,” Kunselman said. On any given day in June or early July, there are as many as 50 employees of Lindy’s BerSEE STRAWBERRIES, PAGE 7

Is a narcotic K9 the answer? BY TODD BECKMANN SENTINEL

SIREN—Admittedly in the infancy stages of building a narcotics program, Sheriff Ron Wilhelm brought two guests to July’s public safety meeting. “A narcotics dog is one of the tools we are looking at in building a program of our own,” he pointed out. To that end, the sheriff invited Polk County Deputy Nick Bryant and his K9 Kaiser to Thursday’s meeting to explain some initial groundwork. “I’ve been a K9 handler for seven years,” Bryant noted. “Our German Shepard is a dual purpose canine — he does patrol and narcotics.” He said since drugs are very prevalent in this part of the state, the dog is a narcotics dog about 80 percent of the time. “The nose is why we use the dog,” Bryant explained. “The shepard has about 25 million scent recep-

tors compared to about five million for a human being.” Plus, a dog’s brain is also specialized for identifying scents — the percentage of the dog’s brain which is devoted to analyzing smells is actually 40 times larger than that of a human. Bryant said the dog is trained to detect marijuana, cocaine, heroin, ecstacy and methamphetamine. “It really cuts down our man hours,” he shared. “Having a K9 is a very significant asset.” Wilhelm agreed. “Because property crimes and narcotics go hand-in-hand, a good narcotics program will bring a decrease in other crimes,” he said. Wilhelm said he is in the early stages of building a narcotics program. “What I’d like to do is mirror the program they have in St. Croix County,” he stated. “They have three narcotics dogs and everything is donated — there’s no taxTODD BECKMANN | SENTINEL

Keeping track of arrest warrants SIREN—Amongst all of their other required duties, the four-member staff of the Burnett County Clerk of Court’s department must keep tabs on arrest warrants. Probably not a big deal, you think, until you hear the number. “We have 1,100 active warrants,” Trudy Schmidt, clerk of court, told members of the county’s public safety committee last week. “More than 650 of those warrants are for fines.” Now to be clear, Schmidt did say that number goes back 25 years to 1990. “These are warrants that either haven’t been served or are for fines which have not been paid,” she continued. A lot of those unpaid fines resulting in warrants are for out-of-state motorists who were pulled over for some sort of moving violation and given the necessary court appearance paperwork and a notice of the fine. “It makes for a good argument in requiring out-of-state motorists to pay their fine at the time they are pulled over,” Schmidt asserted. “With our new communication tower system and cell phone coverage throughout the county, it would be hard to argue against it.” But committee member Don Chell, a former Burnett County sheriff, reigned in Schmidt’s enthusiasm. “The sheriff’s office doesn’t see warrants as a priority,” he observed. “What they need is a dedi-

cated process server.” In fact, former sheriff Dean Roland was known not to share warrant lists with other law enforcement jurisdictions within the county. “The sheriff’s office released the most-current warrant list one day last week,” Schmidt explained. “Within 24 hours, six people on the list were arrested.” It’s not like the county will get rich if all outstanding unpaid warrants are suddenly paid. Even though Schmidt places the amount owed by those 650 people at $700,000, it would not all flow to Burnett County. “It depends on which law enforcement agency issues the citation as to how much is returned to Burnett County,” she pointed out. “Our share of the state fines is about $57,000.” When alleged offenders do make it to court, if that person has a cell phone, the number is taken and placed in their record. “Our computers will issue them a text about an upcoming court date,” Schmidt concluded. “Hopefully, that will cut down on our failure to appear warrants.” Arrest warrants can be issued by the district attorney for an offense or the circuit judge can issue the warrant if an alleged offender fails to appear for a court date or if an offender is not paying on the fine owed to the court. By Todd Beckmann.

Enhancing public safety SIREN—The Burnett County Alcohol and Drug Court has been successful since its inception but to remain so it has to adapt to the changing criminal landscape. Tessa Anderson, the court’s coordinator, told members of the county’s public safety committee last week that, for the first time, the court has admitted two sexual offenders into its program. “We are considering accepting more high-risk, high-need offenders into the program,” Anderson explained. “Those are the ones we are meant to serve.” To that end, she is working to establish a Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC) in Burnett County.

“A CJCC is vital in providing coordinated leadership necessary to establish and foster innovative and effective correction programs for adult offenders,” Anderson noted. “This will also enable Burnett County to qualify for state and federal grants to fund programs such as Drug Court or other diversion programs.” Because the grant process will soon be on a competitive basis, it is crucial Burnett County have a CJCC. “The principal mission of the Burnett County CJCC will be to enhance public safety in Burnett County,” Anderson pointed out. “This will be accomplished through community collaboration by ensuring offender accountability, providing effective rehabilitation

programs, and supporting the rights and needs of victims.” Speaking of victims, victim advocates would play an integral part in the make-up of the council. The membership would also include representation from law enforcement, the jail, and the Department of Corrections. Also sitting on the council would be the district attorney and the circuit judge as well as representatives from the county board and the county’s department of health and human services. Anderson was also advertising for community representation on the CJCC and said anyone interested could contact her. By Todd Beckmann.

‘Festival Theatre Conservatory for Young Performers’ ST. CROIX FALLS—Festival Theatre Conservatory for Young Performers (FTCYP) cast is currently in rehearsal with members of the 2015 summer company. This year Festival is doing something a little different with the FTCYP. This year the youth cast will learn the art of Improv. Similar to the show Whose Line is it Anyway, Improv is the art of making things up on the spot with some basic rules and no script. After many successful years of Sew Good Improv on Friday nights at Festival Theatre, Festival has received much interest in opportunities for youth actors to learn about and practice improv. Combining this interest with the FTCYP means an in-depth learning experience for our middle and high school performers and a whole lot of fun for our audience. Patrons only have four opportunities to see Improv for YOUth and with limited seating in our Elbow Room, these shows will sell out quickly. Show dates and times are Thursday, July 23 at 7:30 p.m., Friday, July 24 at 9 p.m., Saturday, July 25 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, July 26 at 2 p.m. Reservations are highly recommended for all events, and can be made online at www.festivaltheatre.org, or by calling the box office at 715-483-3387.

Change

Summer just isn’t the same without Danbury Days — or at least what used to be known as Danbury Days. Sure, the Danbury Fire and Rescue Department, through its annual open house with air ambulance tours, water fights, a dunk tank and sawdust pile, is making a valiant effort to keep a summer festival alive and well — but it just isn’t the same. Gone are the days of the parade down Main Street and gone are the duck races down the Yellow River — just when I was getting the hang of wading out into the river to capture some pictures of race organizers netting the ducks as they came floating downstream. Ask anyone — change is not my strongest forte. But that’s the one constant in life — just when you start to get comfortable with things done a certain way, it all gets reorganized. It’s certainly no fault of Greg and Mary Wade or Marshall and Judy Hill and all of their kids — heck, it seemed they carried the whole celebration for a number of years. In fact, it seems like you could find a Wade or a Hill at the center of any celebration in Danbury. And while that’s more than Seems commendable, I can see why the to Me families are taking a step back. It’s one thing to want to give Todd Beckmann back to your community and try to make your town a viable destination, one shouldn’t have to go it alone. I recall a few years ago when Danbury was getting set to celebrate its centennial it seemed like pulling teeth to get folks involved. Sure enough, one of the Wade’s stepped in and was a guiding hand in seeing the celebration to fruition. Funny thing too. Once the citizenry were assured there was an experienced event coordinator at the helm, garnering volunteers to tackle the different aspects of the party were easier to collect. It shouldn’t be the responsibility of the same group of people to ensure a celebration continues. I guess that’s the upside of change. Not that the same parade, the same duck race, or the same sawdust pile is bad but different people stepping up to the plate bring fresh ideas to bear.

STROLL THROUGH THE PAST By Eunice Kanne

In January 1898, the Branstad Post Office opened. Matt Johnson, head of the creamery, and Canute Clementson, post master, named the post office Branstad. This was for Ole Branstad who donated land for the creamery which opened in 1897, and which created a convenient point for the post office. Branstad, who came from Norway, chose the name Ole Branstad (over Ole Anderson) as it was the name of the farm from which he came. — Journal January 14, 1898 The Journal of August 7, 1895 told that Trade Lake had three general merchandise stores, four churches, three parsonages, one hotel, one brickyard, two grist mills, one blacksmith shop, two feed mills, five saw mills, all doing good business.

Confessions of a former fruit locust I hope you had an enjoyable Independence Day weekend. You truly couldn’t ask for better weather. Summer is in full bloom. Many flowers are reaching the height of their beauty, fueled by the plentiful rains of June. The crops are looking great as well. During this month, we will be able to enjoy more fresh fruits and vegetables. The berries are in season now, and I hope you have been able to enjoy some of these great flavors. They go by far too quickly. From the My daughter Publisher’s and her family have moved to Desk Wyoming, Minn Tom Stangl and have a rhubarb patch in their yard. d I have many fond memories of rhubarb from my childhood. As a member of a large family, we did not enjoy many treats. My mother would make a huge batch of chocolate chip cookies on the weekend which needed to last the entire week. We also had popcorn, popped on the stove, several nights a week and we were far from malnourished. But in the summertime, we took advantage of the fruits and vege-

tables that were around the neighborhood. Rhubarb is classified as a vegetable, but I always think of it as a fruit. We had a big patch and would break off the stalks, eating them raw with a bowl of sugar. The sugar was a perfect counterpoint to the tartness of the rhubarb, which we happily crunched away on until we were sick. Mom would make rhubarb crisp and pie with what we left her. It was a great treat during June. A neighbor a few doors down had a mulberry tree that they let the kids in the area pick clean every summer. We got to learn the best way to climb a tree and get the ripest berries without falling and breaking our neck. We also learned quickly that birds also liked mulberries and we needed to make sure we got our fill before the birds came along. Climbing the tree and filling up on mulberries was a great way to pass a summer afternoon. We had to wait a bit longer in the summer for the pears on another neighbor’s tree to become ripe enough to enjoy. There are people who enjoy a mushy pear, others like their pears more like a crisp apple. Either way, there was usually always enough to go around. There were a few apple trees in the neighborhood as well, but unless you really could stand the tart-

ness, it was best to wait until fall to eat the apples. When I was a kid, the adults in my neighborhood were very tolerant of the local kids cleaning the fruit off of their trees. The only concerns that were ever raised were safety concerns about us climbing too high on the tree and possibly falling and getting hurt. I realize it must sound like we were gluttons, but we usually spent the day outside playing. We usually rode our bicycles all over town, played baseball or went swimming at the pool, which was located a mile from my home and on top of a hill. I don’t know why it was on top of the highest hill in town, but it sure made you glad to get in the pool after pedaling your bike up the winding road that made its way up the hill. As an added bonus, when you were done swimming, you could really get some speed going down that hill on the road home. Enjoy July and the fruits. The Journal changed its name to “Journal and Sentinel”, but later reverted to the Journal of Burnett County. When the Journal folded in 1962, Wilbur A. Nelson revived the Burnett County Sentinel. Following his death in 1975, his wife, Marjorie Nelson and son, Gary Nelson operated it until Feb. 1, 1994, when it was purchased by Mainstream Publications. It was then purchased by Eugene Johnson on Dec. 1, 1998. The Burnett County Sentinel makes every effort to insure accuracy in all classified and display advertising, but will not be liable for errors beyond the cost of first insertion. Milroy applauds save Harbor Assistance Program vote

Bad news for Northern Wisconsin MADISON—Last week I was able to share some good news with the announcement that federal funds are coming home for a key airport in our region. Unfortunately, the news from Madison this week is bad. The Department of Public Instruction released estimates of general aid for school districts for the upcoming school year, and it isn’t good news for students and parents in Northern Wisconsin. The estimates released show that schools statewide will receive less state aid in the coming school year. Wisconsin’s complicated school funding formula results in winners and losers, but overall, state aid for schools will decrease by just over $100,000. However, the 40 school districts in our area will be receiving $400,000 less than they did in the recently completed ’14-’15 school year. This is two and one-half times more than the total reduction across the state. Several districts in our area will be among the hardest hit in Wisconsin if the budget passes as currently written. Spooner, for example, would lose nearly 30 percent of its state aid in one year, the steepest loss for any school district in the state.

At the same time our schools are being cut, more and more taxpayer money is being funneled to unaccountable voucher schools in other parts of the state. Voucher schools in southern Wisconsin communities would continue to see astronomical increases in taxpayer funding, while our schools have to make due with less. The DPI Janet estimates didn’t Bewley even take into account additional District 25 cuts that will be Senator made due to the increased funding going to voucher schools. The bad news could get even worse. I will continue to fight to restore overall support for public schools that have borne the brunt of budget cuts. We need to change the funding formula and stop punishing rural and Northern schools. Last session I co-authored a proposal from Superintendent Tony Evers that would dramatically improve school funding, especially for our communities. The Superin-

A challenging budget

Gov. Walker backs away from open records law BY DEE J. HALL WISCONSIN CENTER FOR INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM

MADISON—Hit with an avalanche of criticism from across Wisconsin, Gov. Scott Walker and Republican legislative leaders have agreed to remove language from the state budget that would have gutted the state’s open records law. In a joint statement, Walker and the GOP leaders on Saturday said they had decided to remove the controversial measure “in its entirety” after “substantive discussion.” But the question remains: Who is responsible for putting it in the budget in the first place? It is a question that legislative leaders and Walker — who is set to announce his run for the presidency next week — have repeatedly dodged since the proposal was slipped into the 2015-17 spending plan late Thursday as residents headed out to begin celebrating Independence Day weekend. A review by the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism shows similarities between recent records request denials from the governor’s office and the state Department of Administration and changes inserted in the budget by Republicans on the Joint Finance Committee — similarities that raise questions about whether Walker himself was involved in the budget proposal. Critics from the left and right agree the measure would have allowed state and local officials to craft laws and policies largely in secret. All works created, published, posted or disseminated by the Center do not necessarily reflect the views or opinions of UW-Madison or any of its affiliates.

“This has been a challenging budget process as we worked to invest in our state’s priorities while living within the means of taxpayers. As a member of the Finance Committee, I am pleased that we were able to find savings in the Governor’s budget proposal to provide additional funds for our schools, restore critical conservation programs, and enact property tax relief.” “In addition to Sheila changes on Harsdorf e d u c a t i o n and conserDistrict 10 vation, the Senator Finance Committee has listened to citizens and taxpayers by acting to preserve SeniorCare, remove proposed changes to Family Care and ADRCs, and maintain a role for citizen input into natural resources and agriculture policies. The budget proposal approved by the Committee also seeks savings for working families and seniors by holding down property taxes, freezing UW System tuition, and reducing the marriage penalty in the income tax code.”

MADISON—The Joint Committee on Finance (JFC) voted last week to restore funding to the Harbor Assistance Program (HAP) in the 2015-2017 budget. State Representative Nick Milroy (D-South Range) led the bipartisan legislative effort to save the program. To fund the HAP, the JFC reduced Governor Walker’s recommendation for $43 million in bonding to benefit freight rail by $13.2 million. The committee then authorized $13.2 million in bonding for the HAP program. “I’m proud of this successful bipartisan effort to restore the esNick sential transportation infrastrucMilroy ture investments made through the HAP. This program is crucial District 73 for strengthening and expanding Assemblyman Wisconsin’s ports, our shipping industry, maritime tourism opportunities, and our state’s economy as a whole. ,” Milroy said. Milroy continued, “Wisconsin ports play a critical role as logistics hubs that serve a broad range of industries statewide, meaning the positive economic impact of investing in the HAP extends far beyond Wisconsin’s shores. The JFC decision signals that the committee got our message, and I was proud to lead the bipartisan group of legislators who requested this action.” Prior to Tuesday’s vote by the JFC, the Governor’s budget proposal would have provided no bonding authority for the program, a drastic reduction from the $15.9 million in bonding included in the 2013-2015 Biennium. “I implore Governor Walker to recognize his error and approve the budget with restored funding for the HAP, as approved by the JFC,” Milroy concluded.

tendent’s Fair Funding plan would have increased state support for schools in our communities by 13 percent. School Districts in Northern Wisconsin are doing a great job in difficult circumstances. A big part of the problem is that the taxes you pay are not coming back to you in the form of state investments. The money you send to Madison is spent elsewhere. It’s time for these our tax dollars to come back for more than just one airport. That money should be invested in our schools, our roads, our communities and our families. I remain hopeful that we can get the state back on the right track. One bright spot in this week’s budget news: the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee adopted a much needed fix for the consolidated Chequamegon School District. I want to thank Sen. Jerry Petrowski in particular for his work to ensure that we treat all consolidated school districts fairly. As always, I welcome your input. I can be reached via phone toll-free at 1-800-469-6562 or by email at sen.bewley@legis. wi.gov.

NARCOTICS: Sheriff eyes K9 to combat drugs in Burnett County CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

payer money involved in their program at all. There is even a dedicated office to handling donations, money for buying the dogs, training the dogs, as well as housing and feeding the dogs. “I’ve been in touch with their sheriff plus the sheriffs in Washburn and Polk counties, both of which also operate K9 programs 100 percent on donations, Wilhelm continued. “The whole goal is not to burden the taxpayer. He sees Burnett County being able to make good use of a narcotics dog on traffic stops and executing search warrants and saving the department man hours. “We are in the exploratory stages here, Wilhelm conceded. “It may take us six months — it may take us a year.

Towers The communication tower project has hit somewhat of a financial ‘snag’ when it comes to the tower in the Bashaw Lake area. Things were going fairly smoothly until American Tower Corp. (ATC) bought the Verizon tower at Bashaw Lake. Even then, the county simply contacted ATC with all the necessary documents and waited for an equipment proposal. “The ATC draft proposal for placing our equipment on their tower was priced kind of high, Rhonda Reynolds, emergency management director, said diplomatically. “In fact, we are having our consultant (Therkelsen) look at what deficiencies the sys-

tem would have in that area if there were no tower in that area as part of the system. The price? $56,000 annually. Compared to the $1,200 annual contract for hanging equipment on the ATT tower in Webb Lake, it’s more than a little steep. “Everything is back on the table — including working with the tribe for using its Hertel water tower as well as continuing to negotiate with ATC, Nate Ehalt, county administrator, advised. “We can’t sustain that kind of rate. TODD BECKMANN | SENTINEL

In other business: •Wilhelm told members his department has hired two part time recreation officers. “It is hard to find qualified officers for this job,â€? the sheriff said. “People are not going into law enforcement like they used to.â€? He said the part timers are currently in training and he hopes to have them on the lakes and trails soon. •Trudy Schmidt, Clerk of Court, showed off the damage mice are doing to paper files stored at the Russ Road storage building. “There are definite issues over there,â€? Schmidt said, leafing through a box of confetti that used to be full-sized documents. “I am charged with keeping these documents for 75 years — since there’s no way to reconstruct those pages, I have to go into the system and type in that they have been ‘destroyed by mice.’â€? “We are looking at a laser-fiche machine as a potential longterm solution,â€? Ehalt suggested.

New signage A new “Riverside Cemetery sign was donated and installed by Johnson Monument following last week’s annual association meeting. Owner Dave Christian also donated the ‘caps’ at the cemetery’s main entrance last summer. Board members attending the installation included (from left) Russ Erickson, Charles Wright, Brent Blomberg, Betty Peer, Gordon Larson, Glenn Rolloff, Lawrence Anderson and Dick Erickson.

Katalin Sadlicki was born in Hungary and at the age of 11 immigrated to the United States ending up in Chicago where she married

and lived in the suburbs until 1997 when her husband decided to move to Hayward, Wisconsin. The couple lived there for 15 years until three years ago when they moved to Voyager Village. Sadlicki and her husband, a pilot, love to fly and the Voyager airstrip allows them to be up in the air a lot going here and there. “When I was asked to direct the play I was a little hesitant because I’d never done anything like this before. commented Sadlicki. “But Kat Salicki I’m really looking forward to my di directorial for this season’s VPCT t i l debut d musical comedy. Sadlicki said she would be drawing on her musical and dance background for directing this year’s play. She performed with the Gilbert and Sullivan Company in Chicago for five years and the Opera Factory for five years. After enjoying her opera gigs Sadlicki joined a semi-professional Spanish Flamenco Dance Company, “Los Preferidos and was with the troupe for seven years. Sadlicki still loves to sing and enjoys being part of her church choir. When she’s not singing Sadlicki likes to garden, play her fiddle and keyboard.

STRAWBERRIES: A lot of work for a four-week season CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

ies — either working in the fields or manning one of the five roadside stands. “We have 11 acres of strawberries — but we usually pick from half that acreage and replant the other half,” Kunselman added. “Just this spring we planted 36,000 plants.” She said picking begins at 6 a.m. and by 8 a.m. the first 100 buckets of berries are loaded into the vehicle bound for Siren — it’s their first roadside stand of the day. Obviously each day is different but one day last week workers picked 702 buckets — each one a four-quart bucket and each weighing over five pounds. And there’s not much that trumps the smell from bucket upon bucket of farm-fresh strawberries. “I’m a little immune to it,” Kunselman jokingly admitted. “I’ve been around that smell for 30-some years — I think it was 2:30 p.m. the other day before I had my first berry.” As the morning progresses, the field workers load vehicles headed for Cumberland, Hayward, Rice Lake and Spooner. “It’s just wonderful to have businesses, like the Siren Pharmacy in Siren, who support us by letting us sit in their parking lots and sell berries,” she noted. The Kunselman’s restock the roadside stand vehicles later

in the morning and early afternoon and sales usually last until about 5 p.m. “We are really blessed to have great help,” Kunselman said of her workers. “We could grow all the berries we wanted but they don’t jump in the buckets themselves.” Lindy’s Berries, tucked away on Bakker Road off Sand Road between Hertel and Shell Lake, also offers pick-your-own berries for those who enjoy the experience of getting into the field. It used to be the strawberry season was only a couple of weeks. “Scott is pretty savvy when it comes to growing berries,” Kunselman said of her husband. “He plants a few different varieties so they don’t all ripen at the same time — it extends the growing season to three or four weeks.” And raising strawberries isn’t just a matter of picking ripe berries in June and July. “Scott usually starts work in April and works on the fields almost up to deer season,” she pointed out. “And then he’s always doing research in the off-season.” The couples oldest son Ben, who runs the picking crew, has two children so, including the original Lindy, there are four generations at the farm. “We look forward to passing it along,” Kunselman concluded.

Pirates walk-off against Amery BY ZACH TEBOW

GOOB COY | SENTINEL

Majel Schmaltz beats the throw to first.

GRANTSBURG— The Grantsburg Pirates American Legion baseball team rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 9-8 win last Tuesday against Amery. Grantsburg kicked off the scoring in the second inning with three runs, including a triple by Jackson Gerber that drove in two. Amery, however, pushed across a run in the fourth with a couple hits and an error. The Pirates countered in the bottom of the frame with another three-run inning, which included only two hits, but three walks and several errors. Down 6-1, Amery rallied in the sixth, scoring five runs to tie the game off of four walks, three hits, and a hit batter. Amery’s offense stayed hot in the seventh, as three hits brought in two more runs to give them a two run lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Pirates started out with two walks and a hit to load the bases. Gerber then delivered a single to tie the game. A few moments later a wild pitch put the winning run on third base with nobody out. Brett Anderson ended the game with a slow grounder to shortstop that brought in Majel Schmaltz for the walk-off win. Zach Tebow started on the mound for the Pirates, giving up one run on four hits, one walk, and three strikeouts over four innings. Austin Casey pitched the next one and one-third innings, allowing five runs on two hits, four walks, one hit batter, and three strikeouts. Jacob Barnard finished the game as the winning pitcher, throwing one strikeout while giving up two runs on three hits.

The ďŹ rst sign of civilzation

Pastor Tom Cook Siren United Methodist Church

Sometimes life just doesn’t seem to be in sync. Perhaps you’ve heard this question or raised it yourself. Don’t you think people are not as honorable, as good, as fair, as diligent, as trustworthy as they were years ago? The civilized world is going down th tubes or words to that effect. I would like to place next to that my observation of very nice lady who was working at the church cleaning. She fell and broke the femur in her leg. When i heard this, I recalled a story I heard about Margaret Meade, an eminent anthropologist. After she gave a lecture, she opened herself to questions. One person asked her, “What is the ďŹ rst sign of civilization?â€? She did not give what might have seemed the obvious answers like language, use of tools, or art. In-

stead she said, “ A healed broken femur bone. In the animal world a broken femur is a death sentence. But this nice lady I know is within only a few days of the event, well on her way to recovery. It has happened because many people, like her husband and family and hospital personnel, cared about her and not only prepared for this possibility, but carried out the planned process for the beneďŹ t of this particular individual. As I look at today’s world, I see many things that are good. I believe that much of this is inspired by the Spirit of God. But that begs the question, “ Why did this happen to a really nice person?â€? To put it another say, “Why did God allow this to happen?â€? I recognize that we are not robots and we do not

possess inďŹ nite knowledge nor perfect abilities, so sometimes we rebel and sometimes we do things that are just plain dumb, and in either case the results are not good. What is good is knowing that God has a way of bringing good out of the worst situation. The cross on which Jesus Christ died is a prime reality. When Jesus went to the cross, eh was acting faithfully and demonstrating that god would go to any length to love us. The cross was followed by the resurrection which speaks to us that failure and death do not have that last word with God. This last word summons us to live and to live fully, even in the face of failures, pain and death. This invitation to life is straight from God.

WEEKLY WAG News and Updates from the Humane Society of Burnett County SUBMITTED

Baby and Fluffy are six year-old feline siblings who were surrendered to us due to their owner’s unexpected death. Baby is black and quite talkative. She prances around the office following us and meowing away like we understand everything she is saying. Unfortunately, Fluffy had just been spayed when I came to meet her so she was pretty out of it. Baby is all black with short hair, while Fluffy Baby is black and white with medium-length hair. Both are petite for their age and both are very friendly girls. Because they’ve been a duo for six years and we’d like to adopt them together (if possible), we are offering the pair for $75. Normally, our adoption fee is $75 per cat. Last count, we had 13 cats at our shelter and adoptions are not happening as quickly as we’d hoped, plus there are always more cats Fluffy waiting for their chance to fill our condos and find great homes with great families too. If you are looking to add to your household or you know somebody who is considering adopting an animal, look no further than our shelter! Our next fund-raiser will be wine tasting on Saturday, August 22, at the Clover Meadow Winery. Mark your calendars now and join us! Go to our website for more information on upcoming events. Monetary donations are always welcome, no matter how big or small. However, if you are out and about shopping and would like to help us out with some supplies, we are in need of the following items: paper towels, disinfectant wipes, and canned dog food. If you are interested in adopting Baby, Fluffy, or another animal from our shelter, please visit our website at www.hsburnettcty.org or contact the shelter at 715-866-4096. The Humane Society of Burnett County is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization. We do not receive financial assistance from the county. Donations of money or supplies are tax-deductible.

WILD SIDE ‘Meet me at the Garden’ Garden Seminar SPOONER—On July 14 at 6 p.m. the North Country Master Gardener Volunteers invite you for a free seminar at the Spooner Agriculture Research Station Teaching and Display Garden. This month’s topic is Pretty Pots. Master Gardener Volunteers will share their experiences on containers and be available to answer questions. You will learn how to combine different plants, ideas on interesting containers, starting with the right soil, fertilizer and watering tips, and new trends in container gardening. As part of this seminar, the public is invited to enter the Container Challenge. All you need to do to participate is bring one or more of your containers on July 14 to enter the contest. Prizes and bragging rights will be awarded in several categories and all containers will be critiqued as part

of the seminar. The categories are the best use in a container of (1) vegetables, (2) perennials, (3) art or structure, (4) “filler, spiller, thriller” concept, and (5) single color or plant. If voted the best of a category you will win a prize that may be an interesting container, garden art or of course a plant. Mark your calendars for two other events at the Teaching and Display Gardens. The Twilight Tour on Tuesday, August 18 starting at 4 p.m. is the highlight of the garden year. It will feature University of Wisconsin experts, Master Gardener Volunteers, displays, farm tours, tastings, and music. On Saturday, September 12 at 10 a.m. the final Meet Me in the Garden Seminar will be Plenty to Pick. The garden will be at its peak and the seminar will explore what has gone well, not so well, and why for the 2015 grow-

ing season. It will also focus on how to harvest and store both vegetables and flowers including tips on putting the garden to bed for the season. Remember to bring your own lawn chair. All sessions are free and open to the public and will be held rain or shine. Please dress accordingly. Sessions will be cancelled if severe weather. The garden is located one-half mile north of Hwy. 70 on Orchard Lane across from the Sheep Research Facilities. Orchard Lane is located 1.5 miles east of Spooner on Highway 70 or 1/2 mile west of the Hwy 70/53 interchange. Watch for garden meeting signs. For more information and a map visit the station’s web site at: http://spooner.ars.wisc.edu/ or contact Kevin Schoessow at the Spooner Area UW-Extension Office at 715-635-3506 or 1-800528-1914.
