small, unincorporated community located in the northwest corner in the Town of Swiss, Danbury packs a much bigger punch than its name on the map would suggest. Hosting several of the largest establishments in Burnett County, the “last stop to the border” is worth the trek. Less than 60 miles from Lake Superior, Danbury has a casino, historically-significant park, and a 700 home recreational development. In 1989 Forts Folle Avoine Historical Park opened to the public. The park sits on an 80-acre site where two British Fur Companies once operated on the Yellow River. The name was derived from the voyageur term “folle avoine,” or, “crazy oats.” The crazy oats references were actually wild rice. From May to September tours of the historical site are led by “period-dressed” guides. The park also hosts around a dozen events throughout the summer.

spectacular events you can imagine. Crex Meadows is the largest wildlife area in the state, and it is a flyway for birds on their trek to warmer climates every fall. Sandhill Cranes by the thousands come through the Grantsburg area, along with ducks, geese and swans. The visitor center, too, is a must see, filled with information and activities year round. In 2016, Grantsburg will host their 40th Annual World Championship Snowmobile Watercross on Memory Lake. This event draws thousands who come for the excitement of the races, the food, street dances, and the most spectacular fireworks show in the area. Brandt Pines ski trails are a great way to see all the cold- weather critters and have a fun family adventure this winter. Skiing is not the only way to see Grantsburg in the colder months, snowmobiles abound here. Remember, just because it’s cold is no reason to stop fishing. The lakes always produce great ice fishing. Bookmark the Grantsburg and Crex Meadow web sites to find year-round fun.

T

his little burg in northeastern Burnett County may be best known for the scurl of the bagpipe which begins the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, snow or no snow, every March. But, that event has only been in existence since 1990 — the existence of the town goes back nearly another 100 years. Logging was a big enterprise in the early days. Logs were boomed across Webb Lake into Webb Creek, down the Namekagon and St. Croix Rivers to Stillwater, Minn. Early accounts refer to the town as Webb’s Lake, with the name being given in honor of a trapper who operated a trading post in the area. The town was almost named Harrison, rather than Webb Lake, in honor of army general William Henry Harrison. Maps from the early 20th century refer to the town as Weblake, one word with one “b” because, at the time, the postal department was not accepting names comprised of more than one word. It wasn’t until 1938 the spelling of the post office was officially changed to match the spelling of the town.

NEW Area Lodging Available in Webb Lake!

By then, however, several businesses, some still going today, had sprung up. The Webb Lake Narrows Resort opened its doors in the 1920s, the first recorded Webb Lake Store (present day Main Store) began operating in the 1930s and a tavern and eatery known now as the Cabaret also opened in the 1930s. Iven Johnson really made Webb Lake a growing concern in the 1940s and 1950s. In addition to being the town’s postmaster, he added feed and flour, tires and clothing to the offerings of the Webb Lake Store. He and his wife even started marketing ice cream. The Johnsons built cottages, Andrew Kucharski opened the Webb Lake Motel and Guy Johnson built even more cottages — all to lure fishermen. Even some 60-plus years ago the draw of the Webb Lake area was apparent. There are 16 named lakes in an around Webb Lake — with an abundant supply of northern pike, walleye, large and smallmouth bass, muskies, catfish and panfish.

Webster N

amed for the “father of the American dictionary,” Noah Webster, the Village of Webster was founded in 1916. Story has it that in 1895 two Webster pioneers petitioned the federal government for a post office. Mistakenly leaving off the name for where the post office was to be located, the pioneers wrote back to their congressman, “The father of the American dictionary is good enough for us.” Today, 641 citizens call Webster home. Outdoor summer activities in the quaint “Northwoods” town include hiking and biking on the Gandy Dancer State Trail, fishing Yellow and Devils Lakes and canoeing the Yellow River. In 2012, the Village of Webster donated land to use in the creation of a community dog park. The park is open daily, during daylight hours. In July, Webster lights up with the sights and sounds of the Central Burnett County Fair, a tradition dating back to 1917.

In August, locals and visitors alike “make tracks” to the Gandy Dancer Days. This community-wide event celebrates its namesake with dozens of events, including a craft sale and bike rodeo. It also strives for an emphasis on “buying local,” and supporting local businesses. Webster has much to offer, from the fishing opener through the falling leaves of autumn, to an abundant selection of outdoor winter activities. Because it was founded in 1916, that means 2016 is Webster's centennial year. A vibrant committee has been working diligently to mark the occasion with appropriate festivities, including a fireworks show during the Fourth of July weekend as a prelude to the anniversary. The actual centennial celebration is set for Gandy Dancer Days, Aug. 12-13, and includes festivities like a lumberjack show, a car show and the opportunity for outgoing mail to be cancelled with a special cancellation stamp commemorating the day.

Luck

N

estled east of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway in the northern part of Polk County, Luck is a community chock full of gems amidst a bounty of natural beauty. Incorporated in 1905, Luck owes much of its history to a common toy. In 1946 the Duncan Yo-Yo Company opened a factory in Luck, due to the high volume of valuable maple trees in the area. At its peak, the factory produced 3,600 wooden yoyo’s an hour, according to the Wisconsin Historical Society, earning it the nickname “The Yo-Yo Capital of the World." The factory left Luck, in part because of the rise of plastics. Dedicated in 2010, Straight Lake State Park is one of the newest additions to the Wisconsin State Park system. The 2,780 acre park runs adjacent to the 1,325 acre Straight Lake State Wildlife Area. A section of the 1,000 mile Ice

Age National Scenic Trail winds through the park’s glacially impacted landscape. While Straight Lake allows for hiking only, the Gandy Dancer State Trail is open for hiking, biking and winter snowmobiling.

L

ong regarded as the “Crossroads of the North, Spooner, with an abundance of woods, water and wildlife, is a four-season playground for all who venture to it. The city was founded in 1883, the division point between Lake Superior and St. Paul, and the hub of the famous “Omaha X, the point at which four lines of railroad track converged. At its peak, 22 passenger trains passed through Spooner each day. Even though passenger service ended in 1961, its railroad heritage is evident as the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad runs excursions each summer and houses bed and breakfast facilities. Railroading had such an influence on the development of the city, there is a museum highlighting the era.

Clean water serves as big attraction BY TODD BECKMANN SENTINEL

BURNETT COUNTY—“Seventy years on the same lake pretty much tells a story of the quality of the lake water,” Catherine Tripalin Murray, said of North Sand Lake. “Being able to see what’s happening 25 feet deep year after year pretty much explains why we don’t mind driving four and a half hours from Madison to immerse ourselves each summer in our favorite place in the whole wide world.” Growing up in Madison, with four lakes nearby, Tripalin Murray thought she knew what fresh and beautiful bodies of water were. “That all changed in 1945 when I was only seven and traveled with my family to Burnett County for a week in a resort cabin on North Sand Lake near Webster,” she pointed out. “My impression of lake water changed the moment I walked from the cabin through the sand to dip my little toes in crystal clear, cool water that made me want to spend the rest of my life in the same cabin on the same lake.” And, she’s not alone. Roger Noe, president of the Burnett County Lakes and Rivers Association, the largest such association in the county, is a year-round resident on North Sand Lake — and is especially protective of it. “It’s a beautiful lake but it could disappear in a hurry if a bad situation occurs there,” he stated. “But North Sand is as beautiful as it’s ever been ever since I started going to that lake when I was eight years old —it’s been a gift to me.” That’s why Noe joined the BCLRA. “Our mission is to work with lakeshore property owners and lake associations to keep the lake quality in Burnett County bright, clear and as enjoyable as we can for everyone,” Noe explained. He’s not alone in his endeavor. In addition to 40-some lake and river associations throughout the county, plus the assistance of the Wisconsin Lakes Association, the BCLRA board of directors is a diverse group — all with the same goal. “We have members from all points of the county — not just clustered in one area,” Noe pointed out. “So we deal with the aquatic invasive species issues of Ham Lake, for example, or a lake like Lipsett

However, Kornmann said there are actions water sport enthusiasts can take to stave off problems. “We are doing a pretty good job with the ‘Clean Boats Clean Water’ initiative,” he continued. “But it’s up to the property owner to know ‘best practices’ for what’s best for the lake — and convincing their neighbors.” He said if a lakeshore owner is doing the right thing, that’s great, but if he’s the only one, it isn’t doing much for the lake. “But, if 80 percent of the lakeshore owners on a given lake are doing the right thing, that’s huge,” he noted. One of the biggest challenges he sees right now is water run-off from the larger and larger homes being built on lakes. “Rain gardens can help alleviate that stress on the lakes,” Kornmann reported. “It’s a way to get the water to soak into the ground instead of running straight into the lake.” He said the different lake associations around the county are taking up the fight to preserve water clarity. “They will go out three times a year and

than 500 named rivers and lakes in Burnett County.

drop a Secchi disk in the water, lower the disk until they can no longer see it and record the depth,” Kornmann said. “That data is then given to the DNR.” A Secchi disk is a dinner-plate-sized black and white disk attached to the end of a rope marked off in measuring units. “The DNR has a database, comprised of several years of data, they can search by lake name and reveal Secchi disk readings,” Kornmann offered. With more and more lakeshore property owners, some may argue water quality may suffer sooner rather than later. “There’s lots of developments on our lakes,” Kornmann offered. “That pretty much tells the story about how important our lakes are.” And there’s some proof to show water clarity does make a difference. “Some studies suggest good water quality can directly impact the value of homes,” Kornmann remarked. “It’s one way the market responds to water quality.” Yet, people are still coming to Burnett County to experience its lakes and rivers. “Seems like everyone knows someone with a cabin in Burnett County,” he noted. He said the positive experiences of those first-time visitors simply reinforces the message.

Gandy Dancer Trail C

T

he Gandy Dancer State Trail almost divides the county in half, running north-and-south from Siren to Danbury. The trail is a former line of the former Soo rail line and was converted into a hiking and biking trail in 1989. A contest was held the following year to name the trail. The term “Gandy Dancer,” used for those who worked building the railroad, was chosen. Surfaced with crushed limestone, the trails follows the gentle contours of Burnett County farmland. From a leisure-cyclist point of view, the Gandy is perfect as there are charming communities sprinkled throughout the ride, offering cyclists the opportunity for

30

snack and/or shopping breaks. The use of the trail for bicycling does require a permit, available through self-registration stations at many of the trailheads. The trail doesn’t stop at the county borders. The Gandy, as it is affectionately referred to, continues south to St. Croix Falls, for a total length of 47 miles. North of Danbury, the trail crosses the St. Croix River and runs along the eastern edge of Pine County in Minnesota before returning to Wisconsin in Douglas County. The trail continues on toward Superior. More information on the Gandy Dancer State Trail can be found at www.burnettcounty.com/index.aspx and click on “Things to Do,” or by calling 715-348-2157.

Snowmobiling

F

or snowmobiling enthusiasts, December 1 can’t come soon enough. Weather permitting, that’s the day the snowmobiling season opens. Burnett County boasts 332 miles of snowmobile trails — including both county forest land and private land. While the Burnett County Forest Department conducts maintenance on these trails, it falls to seven snowmobile clubs to keep the trails groomed and in pristine condition. Members of these clubs, Cozy Corners, Lakes and Pines, Lake Country Riders, Phantom Trail Riders, SNOWS, Wonderland and the Burnett County Snow Trails Association, love their sport and work diligently to provide the best experience possible.

Similar to the Gandy Dancer Trail, these trails run through or close to communities where riders can refuel — both their machine and themselves. Snowmobiling is one thing, but add in winter use allterrain vehicles, UTVs and frozen ground trails and there’s a whole bonanza of motorized winter sport opportunities awaiting the cold weather enthusiast. For maps or further information, contact the forestry department at 715-349-2157, extension 3 or navigate to www.burnettcounty.com/index.aspx, click on “Things to Do” and select “Outdoor Activities -Snowmobile Trails” from the drop-down menu.

Burnett County Forest and Parks ATV/UTV Questions & Regulations Q: Where can I ride my ATV/UTV in Burnett County? A: It depends on the season Fire Season (April 1st to the Friday before Memorial Day) During this time all trails are closed due to the risk of fire, and many trails are too wet to support ATV/UTV traffic. Summer (Friday before Memorial Day through September 15th) During this time you may only operate your ATV/UTV on State-Funded Summer-use Trails (white blazers). These trails are shown on the Summer Use ATV Map. Only machines meeting the state definition of an ATV/UTV are allowed on these trails. All other trails are closed to ATV/UTV use. Hunting Season (September 16 through November 30th) In this season, you may operate your ATV/UTV on existing logging roads, fire lanes, and snow trails located on County Forest Land, as long as they are not bermed, gated, or signed as closed. Open logging roads must be at least (8) feet wide in order to ride them. No off trail use is allowed and operation on private lands is illegal unless you have permission from the private landowner. Please contact individual townships for their rules and regulations for ATV/

UTV use on their town roads during this time of year. These trails are also currently multi-use trails, which means that any street legal, licensed vehicles can be on these trails. It's also important to note that these trails are not being maintained during this time of year. It is your responsibility to know whose land you are riding on! Winter (December 1st through March 31st) During this time you may operate your ATV/UTV on StateFunded Winter-ATV trails when a 4" groomed snow base is present (blue blazers). These trails are shown on the Snow Trails Map in blue. If there is no snow, the Frozen Ground ATV Winter Trail will be open for use once the ground is frozen (green blazers). These trails are shown on the back of the Winter Trail Map. All other trails are closed to ATV/ UTV use. Additional Regulations for all seasons: • Your ATV/UTV must be registered or licensed • Your ATV/UTV must be equipped with a US Forest Service tested, rated, and approved spark arrestor in working order • No Crazy Driving! You don't know what or who is around the next corner! Ride responsibly. • You can't operate your ATV or UTV in any wetlands or within 50 feet of the ordinary high water mark of any
