ation-building in Australia has been a continuing evolution from its convict population, the gold rush days, post World War II in the 1950s, post Vietnam war and all those who wanted a better life and were prepared to contribute and build their Aussie dream. The changing face of the inner west has been evident for decades. A blended society whose members are able to live in harmony and enjoy the benefits of sharing their culture, food, viewpoints

BURWOOD A blended society in action
and ideas, has become the new glue upon which understanding is built, and which is a measurement of success. The federal seat of Reid covers 66 square kilometres, stretching from Railway Parade in Burwood, Barker Road in Strathfield, through
Auburn and Sydney Olympic Park, all the way through Canada Bay to Drummoyne and is said to be home to the largest number of ethnicities across the nation. The federal seat of Watson is 42 square kilometres, adjoining Reid and stretching out across
Bankstown. Simply put, most of us live in the greatest cultural melting pot in Australia. Our children have a sound understanding of their classmates from all parts of the globe far greater than their parents and grandparents could ever have had at a young age. Tolerance, understanding and opportunity are terms heard and reinforced in curriculums and classrooms. As a child I would never have been able to pronounce ‘zucchini’, let alone recognise or eat one.
Imagine no laksa, bok choy, baklava, gozleme or sashimi – just to name a few? Onceupon-a-time in the 1960s ‘devon’ was about as exciting as lunch meat got. Every week as the editor of Burwood Scene, I have the privilege of meeting or talking with a lot of people, many of whom were not born in Australia. I wish there was page space to print more stories for posterity, for we are living in an age of reason and multicultural growth that immodestly could be claimed to be the best model in the world.
For local, state and federal governments there are major challenges ahead. Our elected officials should focus on the provision of services and amenities in areas such as the inner west and its equivalent in other states, for stronger, more prosperous and harmonious global cities. And forget about themselves for a few years. The importance of agriculture, mining and our rural communities, for they are our natural wealth, can’t be understated either. It’s a national vision we want from those whom we elect.

ACU expansion plans limited Plans for more students and multi-storey development on the Strathfield campus at the Australian Catholic University (ACU) have been down-graded after the Planning Assessment Commission (PAC) released their determination last week that only a new library and underground 600-space car park could proceed. The win for Strathfield residents and Strathfield Council comes after a 20 month battle with the ACU that has seen placards on residential homes, protests and court proceedings undertaken by the council against the ACU regarding the number of students on site at any one time under the 1994 council approval. “After extensive consideration, the Commission has determined to approve only the underground car park and Precinct 1 and the concept plan is modified accordingly. This will enable a significant increase in the amount of parking provided on campus and allow for the development of the Library Learning Commons facility,” the PAC determined. Other significant determinations are that any increase in additional student numbers, increased hours of operation and the remaining Precincts 2, 3 and 4 should only be contemplated once the university can demonstrate ongoing implementation of the Green Travel Plan. For resident action group leader, Jane Pistolese, the decisions were thrilling and “a shock”.

have been as good for the residents,” Jane Pistolese said. “He highlighted how the Green Travel Plan wouldn’t work.” Mr Casucelli is also counting the decision as a win for residents but warned that the fight is not over yet. “Clearly the PAC was unconvinced about the traffic safety and amenity mitigation measures proposed in the Green Travel Plan. These are issues that I and many others raised in the PAC meeting at the end of February and I am glad that they have been taken into the account,” he said. “If the ACU cared about the community then it would first build the car park and put in place those measures that would improve the local area, demonstrate their effectiveness and then come back to the community to
consider proposals to increase numbers and extend operating hours,” he said. The Commission also suggested professional mediation between the ACU and residents. “It is clear that at present the relationship between the university, Council and the community has deteriorated to a point where trust has been eroded and the parties are unable to engage in productive discussions,” the PAC concluded. As a first step, the Commission would urge that the university contemplate engaging an independent mediator to assist in bringing the parties together.” The ACU and Strathfield Council are due in court in May over alleged breaches regarding student numbers.

National curriculum launch at Homebush Boys’ NSW Education Minister, Adrian Piccoli along with the President of the NSW Board of Studies, Tom Alegounarias launched a software builder program to facilitate new national Australian Curriculum at Homebush Boys’ High School on Monday, 8 April. The Australian Curriculum will be rolled out from 2014 to 9,500 schools nation-wide from kindergarten to Year 12 from 2014. English, Maths, Science and History will be implemented in high schools in years 7 and 9 and for years 8 and 9 from 2015. “This is the first-ever unified curriculum across Australia. It’s huge,” says Homebush Boys’ High principal, Tim Jurd.

“I was initially shocked then pleased about PAC’s decision but also feel for the residents on Barker Road and Wilson Street directly affected by the car park, who will not be able to park outside their homes,” Mrs Pistolese said. “Technically, the ACU are only allowed to have 750 students on site at any one time and the hours of operation cannot be extended to the weekends. It is thrilling to know that our weekends are being preserved,” she said. “The determination begs the question about whether the ACU will proceed because why have a 600 space car park if the ACU has to adhere to 750 students?” Nearby resident, Therese Le Strange has spoken out against the ACU student numbers at Strathfield Council meetings for over ten years. “It’s been vital that, as residents, we’ve had an open forum at Strathfield Council to express our views. I’m pleased about this result but I’d like the PAC to say that the site is unsuitable for a university, because it is,” Mrs Le Strange commented. The support from Strathfield MP, Charles Casuscelli, who has a professional background in traffic logistics prior to being elected, has been crucial. “If Charles hadn’t come in and talked about the Green Travel Plan and mode shift targets, I don’t think the outcome would

Sparks fly over Ashfield Fire Station Barry O’Farrell’s cuts to Fire and Rescue NSW came under fire when Ashfield Councillors unanimously supported a motion on March 28 that Ashfield Council express its grave concern over fire station closures and that it is “unacceptable for Ashfield fire station not to be fully operational 24 hours a day”. The councillors also resolved that they are, “especially concerned that the increased response times, resulting from fire apparatus having to travel from other suburbs, pose an unacceptable safety risk for our residents.” “In this densely populated area, which has many enhanced risk facilities, such as high care nursing homes, retirement villages, halfway houses, boarding houses, flats, respite centres and residential housing, the local community has a right to expect a fully functioning fire station”, said
by Belinda Noonan
Councillor McKenna. Strathfield MP, Charles Casuscelli hit back after being invited to comment. “The opening and closing of fire stations happens every day and has done for the last 20 years for all sorts of reasons such as training and sick days,” he said. “Fire and Rescue NSW identify key stations to be manned accordingly and this is a state-wide practise every day. Overtime is where the O’Farrell Government is saving money. The response appropriate guidelines are in place as they always have been.” “Areas overlap and always have done. I condemn those who are promoting fears about closures to fire stations that will not lead to a reduction in the capacity to respond to fires in our community.”
15 non-profit community groups have been given a boost after receiving a total of $30,000 in grants from Burwood Council at a presentation on Tuesday, March 26. Burwood Mayor, Cr John Faker presented the successful applicants with cheques saying, “Non-profit groups are the backbone of our community.”
In his response to Ashfield Council Mr Casuscelli said the councillors didn’t know what they were talking about. “It is apparent from the details of your motion that Ashfield Councillors have little understanding of emergency services operations. Simplifying the effort required to maintain coverage, response times and the maintenance of safe working conditions into a single measure “a fire station remaining open for 24 hrs” is demonstrably absurd and does a disservice to all those officers who assign fire-fighting resources on a daily basis to ensure our community is protected,” Mr Casucelli said in a letter to general manager Vanessa Chan. “The practice of taking fire stations off line is not new. On any one day up to 20 Sydney fire stations may be taken offline to allow fire-fighters to attend training, station forums, to undertake bushfire hazard reduction burns or for a range of other activities,” the Strathfield MP advised.

iPhone photography one pixel at a time
It has been over 20 years since Kaily Koutsogiannis last walked through the gates of Domremy College but for the past College captain it feels like yesterday. Now a talented photographer and artist, Kaily recently shared her amazing story with the present students of the College. Since leaving school Kaily has made a name for herself in the world of iPhone photography with her work shown at the ‘mObilepixatiOn’ exhibition at the Unit 24 Gallery in London and at the Brunswick St Gallery in Melbourne. She has also received an honourable mention at the ‘Mobile Photography Awards’ at the Soho Gallery in New York and is currently exhibiting her work ‘A Love Letter to Sydney’ at ‘The Mint’. One pixel at a time, Kaily is making significant contributions to the world of media by sharing her stories and personal highs and lows, including how a facial paralysis has helped her career. “I worked for a number of years in television, both behind and in front of the camera. I even had my own television show Kaily’s World which showed the trials and tribulations of a Greek Australian girl, Kaily said. “Everything was going well, when suddenly in 2008 things changed. I woke up one morning and my face had dropped. What I had was bifacial palsy; my face was basically paralysed.
Kaily had to make a choice. “You can either sit there and wallow, that’s easy and I did that for a while, or you can make a choice and say I’m going to do something about this. So I found ways to keep telling my stories and this is when I discovered the world of photography and ‘Instagram’. “I quickly realised there are like-minded people from all around the world with whom to share my work. Since the first day I took that photo on Instragram on November 11, 2010, I’ve been taking photos and writing every day since, Kaily explained. “As a result I put together my current exhibition ‘A Love Letter to Sydney’. Sydney was my canvas and I’ve used the people, the strangers in transit, as my subjects. I’m thrilled that the exhibition has received such a wonderful response. “Don’t be afraid of failure. If you have that purpose, if you have that goal, regardless of how many obstacles are in your way, you will soar. You will fly to that destination On her time at school Kaily paid tribute to Domremy saying, “People say, if I had my time again I would do things differently. I turn around and say I’d love my time back at school but I’d probably do everything exactly the same because I loved the teachers, I loved learning, I loved being around my peers; I just loved the environment. I’m so proud to say that I went to Domremy.
Critical acclaim for student’s creed Former MLC student Ruru Zhu’s HSC artwork has been selected as part of this year’s ArtExpress exhibition at Armory Gallery. According to Ruru, her major work, ‘The Student’s Creed’, is a series of drawings that deals with the identity and legacy of a student within a particular body of time during their schooling career. “With each year flying past, students come and go and leave a small imprint of their existence. Whether it be from an achievement, to an extra-curricular status to even small elements of graffiti, every student maintains a sense of proof of their existence, she said. The process of creating ‘The Student’s Creed’ took a long time. Ruru started in mid-February last year and finished “right before the deadline in August. Many of the subjects in her drawings are her art class and teacher, which posed a few problems. More children in child care than ever before
The latest statistics released by the federal government show a record number of families accessing child care as an extra 22,400 children were counted in the Child Care Update report. Early Childhood and Child Care Minister Kate Ellis said the report, released just before Easter and available online, also revealed the number of child care services across Australia increased by more than 500. “The latest Child Care Update shows our measures are working. We’re creating a more flexible, affordable, accessible child care system with higher quality standards and families around Australia are rightly taking advantage,” Ms Ellis said. The latest Update contains a snapshot of the sector taken at the end of June 2012, which shows there were 986,000 children in approved child care and 15,000 child care centres across Australia. More than 700,000 families were using child care. These categories continued a long trend of strong growth over previous quarters.More than a quarter of all children aged up to 12 years were now receiving child care. “What we’re seeing is more children accessing child care in more services than ever before in our nation’s history,” Ms Ellis said. “Couples with children who both want to work should be
able to do so without having to worry about finding a place for their kids or being priced out of the system.” “The report shows families continue to feel confident sending their children to quality care facilities and the sector is feeling confident about delivering more services to families.” Ms Ellis said the Government had paved the way through a range of measures. “Our Government is investing a record $20.6 billion in direct child care assistance to parents over the next four years, more
than triple that of the former Coalition Government,” she said. “Our decision to increase the Child Care Rebate from 30 per cent to 50 per cent of out-of-pocket costs, and increase the cap on the rebate from $4354 to $7500 per child per year, continues to reduce the cost to families.” “We’ve also moved to increase quality care standards so parents can have peace of mind knowing their child is receiving the best care and attention.” Ms Ellis said that work was still required to address the

Flashing lights for schools Eight local schools will benefit from the acceleration of school zone flashing lights program after Minister for Roads Duncan Gay announced that the NSW Government will install an extra 101 sets of school zone flashing lights by July this year, offering protection at 1,340 schools across NSW. Strathfield MP, Charles Casuscelli welcomed the announcement. “School zone flashing lights are proven to be effective in slowing drivers down and saving lives. Studies have found flashing lights cut motorists’ speed by around 7km/h when they enter a school zone,” Mr
availability of child care, calling on all levels of government. “We know there are still many families who can afford child care but simply cannot find any centres that can take their children,” she said. “The Australian Government has done a lot of work in this area but it also needs attention from other levels of government. “There continues to be huge barriers to child care services establishing new sites, particularly planning restrictions, and I’m very keen to work on this as a matter or priority.”
Vision and dedication rewarded
Casuscelli said. “The sites are chosen based on assessments using the School Pedestrian Risk Model, which considers a range of factors including traffic, approaching speed, pedestrian volumes and the road environment and visibility,” he advised. Schools in the Strathfield electorate that will be receiving new flashing lights are, Burwood Girls High School, Holy Innocents Primary School, MLC Burwood, St Joseph’s Primary Enfield, Croydon Public School, Presbyterian Ladies College, St Martha’s College and Santa Sabina College.

Prizes up for grabs at Youth Week events
Call to keep Cabarita Park safe
Youth Week 2013, Be Active, Be Happy, Be You is in full swing and there is still a chance to be involved and win prizes during the Canada Bay celebrations. A free Skate Comp and Clinic is returning to Five Dock Skate Park on Saturday, 13 April from 10am to 12pm followed by the competition from 1pm until 4pm. There will be prizes, games, food and your chance to win a voucher from JB Hi-Fi, Anime at Abbotsford, Concord Golf Club and Five Dock Music Club. Youth Week is the largest celebration of young people aged 12 - 24 in Australia and highlights the positive contributions young people make to our community.
City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas has slammed a review of Cabarita Park which, if approved, would allow it to be an access point and dumping ground for the remediation of Kendall Bay. Mayor Tsirekas said it was disappointing that the original decision was now being reviewed, particularly given the potential impact on heritage-listed Cabarita Park. “We have always acknowledged the need for remediation of sections of Kendall Bay but not to the detriment of Cabarita Park,” he said. Late last year, the City of Canada Bay unanimously resolved not to support the reclassification of sections of Cabarita Park which would allow
it to be used as a work site for this remediation project. “We refused this application on several grounds, including the impact on the heritage of the park, including the removal of significant trees; the closure of a section of the park for public use for over 12 months; and the disruption to access for residents to the ferry terminal,” explained Mr Tsirekas. “We have now been advised the applicant has requested this decision be reviewed by the State Government’s Department of Planning and Infrastructure.” He is encouraging concerned residents to express their views in an online petition available at: http://www.change.org/en-AU/ petitions/preserve-cabarita-parkand-remediate-kendall-bay
What’s the difference between good debt and bad debt?
When accountants and mortgage brokers talk of ‘good’ debt, we refer to loans where the interest paid can be claimed as a tax deduction. This is where the purpose of taking out the loan is for investment purposes. So if you take out a loan to purchase an investment property, you
can claim the interest as a tax deduction – even if you use your family home as security to help with finance. As an example, let’s say that Jack and Jill have a home in Concord, which is in both names under a home loan with the very best interest rate and a utilised offset account. That’s good news. For now, we will call this a ‘bad’ loan because the interest Jack and Jill pay every month is not tax deductible.
The couple next decide to buy an investment unit in Rhodes for $500,000. Because the bank will only lend 80% of its value, ($400,000), Jack and Jill allow the bank to take a mortgage over their family home. By lending against both properties, the bank is comfortable about lending the $520,000 to cover the full cost of the unit including Stamp Duty. We will call this a ‘good’ loan because the interest paid each month will be tax deductible. It doesn’t matter that their family home is helping to secure the loan. Given that Jack and Jill still have money owing on their
original home loan, their new investment loan is set up as “interest only’. It is a sound strategy to keep this loan at its maximum in order to allocate all their extra cash into reducing the ‘balance’ and interest payable on their ‘bad’ home loan, where interest is not deductible. Moving forward, how much they are able to save and squash their debt each month will be the same. However, the benefit of having the best loan structure would result in a larger tax refund at the end of the year. Another, and possibly better, strategy might be to retain the properties as separate loan

identities to avoid a ‘cross collateral’ arrangement with the bank, where all loans and properties are tied up in one bundle. A mortgage broker may suggest obtaining an interest only loan of $120,000 against the home (split separately to their existing home loan) to purchase the Rhodes investment property. Jack and Jill could apply for the $400,000 interest only loan from any bank of their choice, that would be secured by the Rhodes unit. All interest on the total $520,000 debt would be tax deductible. A year later Jack and Jill renovate the Rhodes unit and spend $10,000 on painting. Should they pay for the renovation from their everyday offset? For simplicity this is an
option, but by increasing their investment loan by $10,000, Jack and Jill increase the ‘good’ loan and retain their cash offsetting the interest on their bad loan. The total debt is the same but it’s smarter. Wanna get technical for a sec? Let’s say the interest on the $10,000 is $530 per annum (at 5.3%) and Jack and Jill are both on the 37% tax bracket. By claiming the interest on the extra $10,000 they could save $196 in tax, every year. This $196 annual saving is better kept with their bad debt. The compound interest effect over 10 years would completely fascinate you. By structuring, it is possible to pay home loans off faster.

Have your Say:
Polling misleading says resident
Prime Minister Julia Gillard with Daniel Arnaldi and his wife, Christine Parfait.
I thought the way Canada Bay Council ‘polled’ the community about “No Forced Amalgamation” and ‘interpreted their own results’ was misleading and a waste of ratepayers money. The telephone poll was said have been a representation of the population of Canada Bay Council. Not true. The online poll was anonymous and gave anyone the ability to keep calling again and again to skew the results. So the end result was always going to be a fabricated. I saw a statement from
Canada Bay Council on their website dated 22 March 2013 titled ‘No forced amalgamation is positive news’, which went on to state that, “Yesterday’s announcement is a small win for the community and the Minister should be congratulated in supporting local government and agreeing that councils should not be forced to amalgamate. With 84% of ratepayers who were interviewed by phone saying “no” to forced amalgamations, and around 80% saying “no” via the online poll, it was very clear that our community
did not want to be forcibly amalgamated with another Council,” he said. Then I found the media release that Canada Bay Council were referring to dated 21 March 2013 from Don Page MP titled, “Government Sticks to Election Policy of No Forced Amalgamations”, which clearly gives Mayors a dressing down as the Minister never changed his election promise. In part the Minister’s press release said that he, “reaffirmed the Liberals & Nationals policy of no forced amalgamations,
saying that he was committed to working with councils through the reform process. I note that a number of mayors are unnecessarily alarming councillors, workers and ratepayers with claims the government is secretly plotting forced council amalgamations.’’ Shame on Canada Bay Council for knowingly wasting ratepayers money on what was nothing but a figment of their imagination.
Nation’s best photos on show Empowered women leading business When Daniel Arnaldi entered his portrait photo of Wyatt Song in the 2013 National Photographic Portrait prize, he was never expecting to be among the finalists. “It’s definitely a career highlight to have my work hanging in the National Portrait Gallery. My wife and I came to see last year’s exhibition of finalists and I never imagined that we would be back this time with me as a finalist. When I got the call that I was selected it took a few minutes for it to sink in. It still feels a bit surreal to walk into the NPG and see your work there,” Daniel said. Wyatt Song, who is a wedding photographer from Annandale, had decided to set himself the

challenge of swimming the English Channel as the first Australian Chinese to do so. As part of a series of photographic portraits, Daniel took the shots of Wyatt when he was in training for the swim. The winner of the 2013 prize was Janelle Low for her portrait of Yhonnie and her 19 year-old cat, Indiana. Prime Minister, Julia Gillard opened the 2013 exhibition on March 8 in Canberra. Daniel and his photographer wife Christine Parfait have both shot many front page and feature stories for Burwood Scene.
A stich in time The 1300 members of NSW Embroiderers Guild, whose headquarters are on Queen Street at Concord West are looking to raise a further $800,000 to renovate and extend their building to three levels. The $1.5million plans, drawn up by architects Neeson Murcutt would provide a public space with galleries, reception and shop with goods for sale along with a library and museum on the second level. Education and meeting rooms dedicated to workshops would be housed
on the third floor. “A purpose built climate controlled environment will house the Guild’s Collection of museum quality traditional and contemporary embellished textiles, clothing and accessories dating from the 17th Century,” said spokesperson Donna Caffrey. “Improved Exhibition Space and natural light will showcase members work, curated exhibitions, retrospectives and graduating students work. The gallery will also be available to community art.”

recorded (167 females and just 59 males). In contrast to this, there were only 13 deaths in the 25 and under age group. Overall the asthma death toll dropped by 38, compared with 2010 data. While this figure marks an encouraging decrease in the overall annual asthma death toll and a positive decline in both male fatalities and deaths amongst younger Australians, the National Asthma Council Australia is warning that there is no room for complacency. “The drop in the mortality
AW
rate has been gradual and progressive over the years, from a peak of 964 deaths in 1989 to the latest toll of 378 in 2011,” noted National Asthma Council Australia Chair, Dr Noela Whitby. “This continues the trend which is due to ongoing education of the health care profession, community and patients with asthma. It also reflects the more aggressive and careful management of people with asthma. “However, we still have a long way to go. Every death is a tragedy and the new data should be a major wake up call, especially amongst our
older female population and anyone who is caring for an older relative with asthma,” she urged. While the National Asthma Council Australia acknowledges that the number of deaths registered each year amongst older Australians appears to be increasing in line with the ageing Australian population, it is adamant that asthma deaths are avoidable. “Asthma can’t be cured but it can be controlled with asthma preventer and reliever medication and by following an up to date written asthma action plan, prepared by your doctor,” Dr Whitby advised.

Robert Broadley on stage
Light still shines on Robert Broadley Burwood identity and founder of the Strathfield Light Opera Company, Robert Broadley’s memory still lives on after his death last year. Born in Burwood and educated at Canterbury Boys’ High School, the late 72-year-old began his career in a men’s wear store, but it was performance that he was most passionate about. In 1968 he established the Strathfield Light Opera Company with an inaugural season of The Land of Smiles, Orpheus in the Underworld, and a play Goodnight Mrs. Puffin. He was inducted into the
Association of Community Theatre Hall of Fame in recognition of his contribution to community theatre in 2008. Only a few years before his passing, Robert moved to a retirement village in North Parramatta where he managed the library and book reading club. When his health began to decline he was supported by a small group of friends who were a big part of his theatrical life. His funeral was held at St. Thomas’ Anglican Church, Enfield, where his ashes were interred with his parents’ in the adjacent cemetery.

Charles joins the attack Following criticism from Burwood Mayor, John Faker over insufficient funding fears and community consultation for the WestConnex M4 project, Strathfield MP Charles Casuscelli has hit back saying that NSW Labor is “out of touch. Prior to the Easter break, Mr Casuscelli moved a motion in the NSW Parliament naming WestConnex as the top infrastructure priority for NSW, which was easily passed but not supported by NSW Labor. “NSW Labor continued to show how out of touch they are by voting against a motion supporting the development and priority of the WestConnex, Mr Casuscelli said. Saying he was “shocked at the Labor vote, Mr Casucelli went further. “I was shocked at how even a party as hapless as NSW Labor could vote against this motion. This debate confirms that relying on Labor and the Greens to protect the interests of the Inner West is absurd, he said. “They have no idea of the importance of
transport infrastructure especially the WestConnex to improve the amenity and safety of our local areas. “Now we know why the M4 East was never even started under the Labor Government. “ The NSW C o a lit ion Government has committed $1.8b, secured funding from a future Coalition Federal Government and established the Sydney Motorways Project Office that has formally commenced the project. Contrast this with the shambles of previous M4 East announcements that went nowhere, he added. Mayor Faker acknowledged in early March that the M4 East extension is a top priority. “The M4 East extension is the most important part of the project, connecting Western Sydney to the CBD. It will require a further $3 billion funding which needs to come from somewhere, otherwise we’ll be seeing 40 storey buildings along Parramatta Road in order to fund the project, Cr. Faker said. “The State Government ignored requests by Burwood

Pensions on the increase More than 27,000 local pensioners have received an increase in their pension and the new Clean Energy Supplement, which was implemented on March 20. Single pensioners on the maximum rate will receive an extra $35.80 per fortnight, and pensioner couples on the maximum rate will receive an increase of $54.00 per fortnight combined. With the increase, total pension payments for people on the maximum rate will be: $808.40 a fortnight for singles, and $1,218.80 a fortnight for couples combined. Tony Burke, Member for Watson said the extra money will be a boost for pensioners. “I’m passionately committed to a better deal for all pensioners. We know they have the least room to move in their budgets,” Mr Burke said. “This latest boost will help make sure our local pensioners can keep on top of things when the bills arrive.” The new Clean Energy Supplement, which is part of the Household Assistance Package, will be paid fortnightly along with the pension, at a rate of $13.50 per fortnight for singles and $20.40 a fortnight for couples combined. The pension reforms and the new Clean Energy Supplement mean that the maximum rate of the single pension was now $207 a fortnight higher than it was in September 2009. “Tony Abbott and the Liberals have promised to claw back every cent of the support Labor is delivering pensioners under the Household Assistance Package.

No man’s land is still alive
Concert to remember Rev. Kohler
A
visit to Land’s End is more than an opportunity to say you have experienced life on the edge. It is a chance to feel as if you are the last sentient being on earth. As far as extremeties go the Cornwall settlement could not be more out-there. Not only is it the most southwesterly point of the British mainland, it is also the extreme westerly point of the mainland of England. And, depending on who you ask, it is an underwhelming tourist trap. For many years, I had longed to visit this town, not only because I am fond of remote and isolated landscapes and an escape from crowds, but also because I had heard it sung of in a song by one of my favourite artists, Patrick Wolf, who lamented that this was: “A wild stretch of land ‌ such a sad place to beâ€?, albeit one which also contained in it “the fire to be free.â€? Land’s End is a place of extremes My romanticism and preconceived notions of Words and photos by place were quickly brought Mitchell Jordan into confrontation by other English folk, who wasted no time in warning me that I if I were entering the set of a would be disappointed. movie that, once filming was “There’s nothing there,â€? finished, had been kept open one lady said, while another for tourists. It’s easy to understand how people can be put off AND DINE by such a garish front, but it is even easier to ignore this superficiality by walking away to the granite cliffs that reveal one of the most desolate, dramatic and perhaps even depressing views that can be
found within Europe. Promotional posters and signs for Land’s End show off the sun shining over these cliffs, painting a scene that belongs in a Hollywood movie, but during my visit in June (summer) the sky was foggy with clouds brooding tempestuously while gulls hovered and squawked like bored school children. In the distance, the Isles of Scilly hovered, evasive as lost things. The famous words of

visionary poet, T.S Eliot returned to me: “This is the way the world ends/ Not with a bang but a whimper. Suddenly, I knew why so many people visiting here must leave disappointed: as far as striking beauty goes, Land’s End is undeniably lacking in charm. This is a place that is uncompromising, unapologetic and unattractive to most. I walked along the craggy cliffs as the wind gathered speed and force and before long it started to rain. I continued, because being in the rain seemed only natural in a place like this and, soon, mist shrouded the view almost entirely. I felt as if I were the last person on earth and the rest of the world nothing more than a mirage and knew that, even without an umbrella, I did not want to go back..

Co-ed band camp strikes a chord CLASSIFIEDS
Prior to Easter, students from Homebush Boys High and Strathfield Girls High attended a three day music camp at Naamaroo convention centre at Lane Cove. This was the first time that a musical band camp had been held with both schools and students embraced this opportunity to be fully immersed and engaged in fine tuning their skills and passion in all aspects of music. Band camp coordinator Tracey

Burjan, who has a wealth of experience in this field, led and directed the students. The enormous success of this event was also due to music teachers Andrew Smith and Patricia Fong from Homebush and Strathfield high schools, who were assisted by musical maths teacher Barbara Gobel and parent musicians Jeff Mallia, Noel Alley, Steve Black
and Paul Burjan. The camp concluded with an hour-long concert, which included brilliant classical themes, movie scores, choirs, ukuleles, percussion, string ensembles and to finish a rendition of the Blues Brothers classic ‘Shake Your Tail Feather’, where the entire group joined in and do the ‘mashed potato’ and ‘the swim’ that was met with rapturous applause from the audience of parents and friends.

French-themed cats are winners THE FRIENDLY PLACE TO SHOP AND DINE
Strathfield cat breeder, Jillian Miles enjoyed a successful Royal Easter Show with her Birman cats, Banjo Crème and Pascal is Red, with both winning their desexed kittens category. Jillian’s introduction to the show world began 40 years ago with her first Chocolate Point Siamese, which set the course and her long-term involvement in the NSW Cat Fanciers Association.
“Nine years ago after talking with the vet at Enfield, I became interested in the breed and purchased my first Birman, a lilac point neuter who was the catalyst of my obsession,” Jillian explained. “I then decided to begin the challenge of breeding Birmans myself.” “Birmans are a beautiful semi long-haired breed and come in lots of colours including
chocolate, seal, lilac, blue torti and tabby points. They are intelligent and not a nervous or demanding breed and are also easy to have around,” Jillian said. Jillian has 11 cats and all have French-themed names. Show quality cats cost approximately $850 and breeding “Queens” slightly more.

Ball stays in Meriden’s court After a gripping three-day tournament at Pennant Hills Park, Meriden School, Strathfield, has defended its title as the champion of Tildesley Tennis for the fourth consecutive year. Meriden took out the singles and doubles titles in the competition, with doubles player Genevie Ulanday winning her fourth consecutive Tildesley doubles title. More than 250 girls from 26 independent schools competed in this year’s tournament from 20 to 22 March. The overall winning school is determined by the average of games won over games played throughout the tournament. Meriden dominated t h rou g h out t h e e nt i re tournament, with the singles title going to 17-year-old Year 12 student, Sonja Balic. Watching from the sidelines, the school’s supporters were in high spirits as Genevie Ulanday and Alex Osborne played Gracia Cham and Georgia Dobell in a high-powered match which eventually saw Genevie and
