peter Smith leads Strathfield Red Shield by Mitchell Jordan
S
trathfield Rotarian Peter Smith and his dedicated troop of local students have been keeping the Red Shield Appeal in the black with their tireless door-knocking and this year is no exception. On May 20, Mr Smith and students from across the inner-west will once again hit the streets – and homes – in the Strathfield area to raise money for the annual Salvation Army event. But they need your help. Approximately 60 volunteers are needed to take students to and from their designated collection area within the Strathfield Council municipality on the Sunday morning. Mr Smith anticipates it would take two to three hours. This year marks Mr Smith’s 11th year. As chairman of the Strathfield branch of the appeal and a former Rotary president, he believes that helping charities and those in need is something that everyone can – and should – get involved in. “It’s great to see such
community spirit,” said Mr Smith, who last year lead the charity to a record-breaking figure of over $27,000 in Strathfield. “Multiply that by 77 councils across New South Wales and you’ve got a sizeable sum that can really make a difference.” According to Mr Smith, the appeal’s strongest support comes from Homebush Boy’s High, which sends approximately 200 volunteers each year, along with 100 from Strathfield Girl’s High. “I’ve been very impressed with all the students’ attitudes; there is absolutely no reluctance from any of them,” he said. Giving up their Sunday morning once a year also teaches the students a lesson that they cannot learn in the classroom. “It’s very important for students to be involved in a community project like this,” Mr Smith said. “The Red Shield Appeal helps to raise money for people who are not so well-off and a lot of students can identify with kids living on the streets. They also get to work in a team and it’s a feel-good thing. There are no losers – everyone benefits.” Give generously on Sunday May 20.

012 has been dominated by political stoushups, scandals, and eye-rolling manoeuvres that have a mind-numbing effect on observers – or more correctly, the constituents. A federal government that has lurched from crisis to crisis and failing to see the bleeding obvious, which all started with the dumping their own leader followed by the, “there will be no Carbon Tax under a government I lead,” promise. both sides of the house. The proponents in that house are a representative mix of its people, who would ideally be leaders, followers, visionaries or doers. We’ve got who we’ve got in governments because we put them there, which doesn’t say much for the voters. The trust factor has been broken and it’s only a fool who would repeatedly go back for more. Building trust is one thing, maintaining it is another. A decimated ALP is not healthy for the Australian democracy. The Greens, under Bob Brown built trust

say it’s a soap opera, but really it’s more of an operetta (light in subject matter) as more canary-like figures sing their songs and mostly out of tune. Surely there can be no funnier “Yes, Prime Minister” moment that when Bill
Shorten agreed on air with Julia Gillard’s announcement regarding the Speaker of the House, Peter Slipper, without knowing what the prime minister had said. A strong democracy requires robust debate on
in the electorate effectively, but probably on the heels of a greater mistrust in disaffected Labor and Liberal voters. With Brown gone, the Greens will be more a muddy colour. In NSW, we are still waiting for something to happen. Roads built, hospitals fixed, something…. anything. The NSW Liberal government gained our trust, and now they need to maintain that trust by becoming proactive. Locally, it’s back to the polls on Saturday September 8 for elections in 152 NSW Local Government council areas. Mayors will be
popularly elected in the City of Canada Bay and in Burwood for four-year terms in addition to the election of councillors. For Ashfield and Strathfield, the mayors will be determined in council meetings after the elections. Knowing whom you vote for and why will build a stronger community. Too often people choose to ignore politics, or feel that there is nothing they can do to change it. This isn’t true. If ever there has been a need to know who our leaders are, what they stand for, and what they have – and haven’t – done, it’s now.

Croydon station’s fight for funds by Mitchell Jordan
It has been called “rundown” and difficult to access, but it is uncertain whether Croydon train station will receive cash for a much-needed lift. At a recent Burwood Council meeting, it was resolved that Council write to the State Member for Strathfield, Mr Charles Casuscelli, to seek prioritisation of the establishment of disability access and a lift at Croydon Station. Mr Casuscelli told Burwood Scene that he has made personal representations to the Minister
for Transport for advice as to priority and funding for both Croydon and Flemington stations. “Funding is the critical question,” he said. “There is such a backlog of repair and maintenance work across our transport network … that the limited funds will go to the critically most-deserving projects.” Though he vowed to campaign for the station, Mr Casuscelli revealed that Croydon is not top of the list. “To be honest, Croydon sits between Burwood and Ashfield stations, both of which have
easy access; so the priority for Croydon is not the highest relative to other areas,” he said. Burwood Mayor, John Faker, has written to the Minister for Transport and will meet with www.burwoodscene.com.au Mr Casuscelli in a few weeks. “The constant feedback I get from the community is the appalling state of Croydon station considering how busy it is,” Mr Faker said. When Burwood Scene visited the station, we witnessed one lady struggling to negotiate her pram up the stairs. Another NEWS 3 elderly resident said that though the station was “safe”, it needed 6 October 2011 a lift.

Member for Watson, Tony Burke says pensioners cannot handle a rent increase.
A worry for Watson pensioners?
Ahead of this year’s pension increase, Federal Minister and local MP, Tony Burke, has called on Liberal Premier Barry O’Farrell not to raise rents for local pensioners living in public housing. Over May and June, more than 26,400 pensioners in the Watson electorate will receive a tax-free, lump-sum payment of up to $250, before receiving an increase to their fortnightly pension in March next year. The total increase amounts to $338 a year for
single pensioners and $510 a year for pensioner couples combined. The payments will be identified as a separate pension supplement, that, according to a release from Mr Burke, will make it simple for the New South Wales Government to exclude it from their rent calculations. “I’m worried Barry O’Farrell will use the Labor Government’s upcoming pension boost as another excuse to increase rents for local pensioners again,” Mr Burke said.

a safer BurWood A
S MAyor of Burwood, I know how important it is for residents to feel safe when they go out to enjoy the dining and shopping that this great area has to offer in the Town Centre, ensuring that Burwood remains an attractive place to live and work. I have written to Burwood Police to request a meeting with them, the Burwood Council General Manager and Community Safety officers to address the growing trend of socially unacceptable behaviour that occurs after dark in our Town Centre and has come to my attention. We have identified that acts of idiocy and unruliness
have been ruining residents’ enjoyment of Burwood’s fine dining and shopping. While Burwood Council will work to stamp out unacceptable behaviour in our community, I also encourage residents to take an active role in increasing safety and awareness in our area by joining the Burwood Safety Committee. The Burwood Safety Committee is currently recruiting members of the community to provide input and ideas on initiatives that will benefit our area. If you’re interested in joining the Committee, please call the Mayor’s office on 9911 9916.
I look forward to working together as a community to ensure Burwood Council and the local area further the high standards of safety and support we have come to enjoy. the vision for 2012-13 This month, I invite local residents to inspect the draft operational Plan, Budget, revenue Policy and Schedule of Fees & Charges for 2012-13 on display at Council Chambers, Burwood Library and on our website. Working towards our 20 year Community Strategic Plan, Burwood 2030, in 2012-13 we will continue to work towards being debt-free while
undertaking a variety of major projects that are centerpieces of the plan, including a new hall for the Woodstock Community Centre, upgrades to the Enfield Aquatic Centre, the development of a car park at the site of the new Library on Conder Street and the beginning of the Wangal Park project. This budget also includes a $15 million allocation of funds to buy property on behalf of the community to supplement rates and invest in new projects while continuing to develop new footpaths, roads, kerbs and gutters, as well as improve community services that make the area a point of pride for residents.
Water smart, Water safe
E
vEN though the weather is cooling, many families are already preparing for the warmth of summer by installing residential pools in their backyards.
Every year we all see the tragic stories of drownings in the media. I’d like to remind residents that if you are putting in a pool for your family this year, it is critically important to remember that it should have a swimming pool barrier that meets the set requirements and that children should be supervised at all times to ensure a safe, fun time. Led by Burwood Station officer Jim Stephen and his crew, the crowd learnt that oil fires should never be put out by water, but to use fire extinguishers instead. The Burwood firies also demonstrated the proper use of smoke alarms and fire extinguishers and gave some very excited children – and adults – the chance to try on uniforms, turn on the siren of a fire engine, and climb into the cabin all the while learning some very valuable lessons.

Alison turns her eye to volunteering by Mitchell Jordan
Retiring from work is no excuse for being idle according to Croydon Park resident, Alison Manno. For the last four years, Ms Manno, a former accountant, has been responsible for coordinating Vision Australia’s audio description service, which makes it possible for the blind and vision-impaired to access information on what is happening on stage while they attend theatre productions. It’s a role that couldn’t have suited her better given that Ms Manno has been a singer and opera-goer for much of her life. She is particularly pleased that, thanks to this service, it is possible for others to enjoy a form of entertainment that she loves. “The audio description service means that when people go to the theatre they have an infra-red receiver and earpiece and before the show and in between dialogue, they have a description about what is happening on the stage,” she said. “The volunteers who do this see the performance three times
before they do the descriptions, which means they spend about 25 hours working on each show.” The service is offered at a number of theatres, from Sydney Theatre Company through to Southern Entertainment Centre. As a sufferer of macular degeneration in one of her eyes, the work that Ms Manno has done will mean that, one day, she will be able to continue enjoying the theatre no matter what her condition. “Further down the road, I won’t have to worry because I know now that I can still keep going to the theatre even if I can’t see,” she said. Two years ago, her efforts were rewarded with an honour award from Vision Australia. This month, Australia celebrates National Volunteer Week from 14 to 20 May. Ms Manno encourages others to volunteer wherever they can. “Accounting was how I made my money, but this is something I do because I want to, and to keep my mind active. It’s very important that when people retire they have something to do,” she said. “So many organisations wouldn’t survive without volunteers.”

Strathfield residents to meet again over ACU plans The Strathfield Resident Action group, which formed to fight the Australian Catholic University’s plans to develop its Strathfield campus, is holding another community meeting at 1pm on Saturday May 26 at Strathfield Town Hall on Redmyre Road. Strathfield MP Charles Casuscelli and mayor, Paul Barron have confirmed their attendance and will be speaking. Residents will hear why the site is too small for the proposed ACU c on c e pt p l a n s a n d current parking and traffic
problems being faced by residents surrounding the campus. For those residents who did not attend the initial meeting on February 18, an outline of the ACU’s concept plan will be discussed as well as implications surrounding the Part 3A development application by the ACU to the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure (DPI). Over 300 submissions objecting to the proposed development were received by the DPI, after which it was announced that a Review Panel would
be appointed. It is up to the NSW Minister Brad Hazzard to decide whether a public hearing would be scheduled. “We, the residents, are entitled to a formal public hearing rather than a forum or public meeting,” said one of the Residents’ Group leaders, Jane Pistolese. Members of the Action Group also spoke to Mr Hazzard at a business luncheon at Strathfield on Tuesday 15 May, which was organised by the Strathfield Chamber of Commerce to discuss Strathfield’s Local Environment Plan.

Kevin takes on Kokoda
Kevin Brown with his trainer, Dane De Jager.
He’s cycled in Vietnam and hiked the Inca trail, but for Five Dock resident, Kevin Brown, this is not enough. This year, Mr Brown is undertaking not just one, but three challenges. In July, he will tackle the Kokoda Trail, followed by a 100-kilometre Oxfam walk in Sydney and, in September, a 32-day hike to the Everest Base Camp and Annapurna in the Himalayas. It might sound extreme, but for Mr Brown, a retired carpenter and joiner, the turning point in his life came after the discovery that he had cancer of the kidney and a double hernia. “Both my parents died of cancer and I didn’t want to go the same way,” he said. Now in remission, Mr Brown has visited a surgeon for the past five years, but finds it essential to keep up his good health. “I need to maintain high levels of fitness to fight it,” he said. Mr Brown credits his trainer,
Dane De Jager at the Five Dock Leisure Centre for helping him stay in good shape and sound mind. “When I met Dane, I told him that I wanted to give something back to society and not waste my retirement,” he said. “Dane has influenced me enormously: he’s a down-to-earth guy who is determined to make me reach my goals.” The two train together twice a week. “Training is not an obsession,” Mr Brown said, noting that he still enjoys having a beer and leading a “normal” life. “I want to motivate older people by showing them that their life is not over, it’s beginning,” he added. Of all the challenges he has undertaken, Mr Brown expects Kokoda to be a milestone moment. “I’m excited to be following the great Australians who made this country,” he said. “I think it will be a defining point in my life.”
Burwood Council unveils strategic vision A number of new projects, such as a new community hall and library car park are in the works as part of Burwood Council’s 20-year community strategic plan, Burwood2030, while delivering a surplus budget. The draft budget, currently on public exhibition, includes a $30m commitment to capital
works and infrastructure over a period of four years, including $11.5m investment in projects in 2012-13. Following the strategy outlined in the Burwood2030 plan, Burwood Council is undertaking more than 80 actions and projects in the area, and in the coming year this will include a new hall for the
Woodstock Community Centre, upgrades to the Enfield Aquatic Centre, the development of a car park at the site of the new Library on Conder Street and the beginning of the Wongal Park project. “By ensuring a sound budget, Burwood Council is in a position to undertake these new projects while continuing to
develop new footpaths, roads, kerbs and gutters, as well as improve community services that make the area a point of pride for residents,” said Burwood Mayor, John Faker. “ B u r w o o d C o u n c i l ’s strategy for 2012-13 is the result of extensive community consultation.” Burwood Council is now
exhibiting draft versions of the Operational Plan, Budget, Revenue Policy and Schedule of Fees & Charges for 2012-13. Residents are invited to inspect the documents at the Council Chambers, Burwood Library or the Council’s website, and provide feedback before 5pm Tuesday, 22 May 2012.

Bank’s big birthday bash by Mitchell Jordan
Ten years ago, Homebush residents were faced with the prospect of not having a bank in their town. Now, they couldn’t imagine life without one. Defying the odds, the Homebush Community bank branch of Bendigo Bank has gone from strength to strength since it opened in 2000 following the exit of Westpac and the Commonwealth bank in the area. This month, to mark its tenth birthday, employees past and present gathered to celebrate the milestone
moment. Marlene Dolan OAM, who opened the bank in 2000, spoke of the strong response and encouragement she received from the very beginning. “Back then we had 350 people supporting us, but it wasn’t hard to get the money out of them, she said. “They wanted to bank in Homebush. Emmanuel Vatalis, Homebush Community Bank branch manager, who has over 30 years’ experience in banking, has not looked back since joining the branch in December last
year. “It’s more than just a bank – it’s a community bank, he said. “From a business point-of-view, my main aim is to keep a community focus and an environment where we can deal with any business, be it a small credit card through to a large corporate. The Homebush branch was the 63rd bank to be opened by Bendigo, which now has more than 430 Bendigo Bank branches across Australia, including 240-plus Community branches owned and operated by local communities.

Support for Burwood Local Environment Plan
Strathfield Open Garden
BURWOOD
There was no strong opposition to the Burwood LEP at an Extraordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 15 May. C ouncil received 159 submissions, including 12 petitions from residents, property owners and community groups, as well as attendance at Council’s “open house” sessions throughout the document’s six-week public exhibition. The majority of submissions and petitions supported the LEP and there was no strong opposition to the document. According to Mayor John Faker, the draft LEP, combined with the State Government’s ‘Sydney over the next 20 years’ discussion paper, both reaffirm Burwood as a major centre and recognise the role of the area in coming years. “While Burwood is and always will abe a major centre, the residential surrounds and strength of its business centres need to be protected,” said Cr Faker.
“Burwood Council thanks all the people who have provided submissions or signed a petition on the LEP, their contribution is vital to the process of developing such an important document. “Our LEP will manage development over the coming 15 to 20 years and provide certainty for both businesses and residents,” he said. The draft LEP recommends that with minor changes the proposed document be submitted to the Department of Planning and Infrastructure for final approval while a Planning Proposal is recommended for more substantial matters raised in public submissions. In t hree cas es it is recommended that separate Planning Proposals be invited to deal with more substantial matters from the proponents: Strathfield Sports Club in Strathfield, MLC School in Burwood, Flower Power in Mitchell Street and Tangarra Street East Croydon Par
View the old geometric shapes and stylish modern sculptures for yourself when the small contemporary garden at 31 Birnam Grove, Strathfield is open to the public this month. From the 26 to 27 May, Birnam Grove is viewable to the public from 10 am to 4.30 pm at an admission cost of $6 for those
aged over 18. Developed by garden owner and landscape designer, Jim Roustas, the hardscape materials reflect the soft colours of the house, seamlessly blending the early twentieth century home with its garden surroundings. Circular paving and clipped hedges in the front garden is echoed in the shape of the
stunning ball sculptures – and in autumn, the striking foliage of a trident maple lights up the overhead canopy. Separate garden rooms, each with its own distinctive personality, have been created in the back garden with screens and clipped hedges dividing the spaces.
Cops flock to Drummoyne Nine additional police officers have been added to the Drummoyne area following the graduation of 309 officers from the Goulburn Police Academy. The arrival was well received by MP, John Sidoti. “This is a fantastic win for Drummoyne and ensures we have an increased police presence in making our streets safe,” he said. “Our local officers do a fantastic job and I am thrilled we are getting a further nine officers and I warmly welcome them to our community.” Minister for Police and Emergency Services Michael Gallacher said this graduating class is made up of individuals that come from diverse careers and experiences with 24 graduates over the age of 36, bringing new skills and ways to look at issues for the Police Force. “In this group of officers, there are more than 20 languages spoken with graduates born across 25 different countries– reflecting the great diversity of the NSW Police Force,” he added.
Here we go again: another Citizens’ Panel meets for the first time Metro strategy for Sydney KEEPING IN TOUCH WITH THE COMMUNITY It’s a case of even more talk with 15 drop-in sessions that are being held across Sydney during May and June to hear ideas for a new Metropolitan Strategy from those in the Strathfield area. A Metro Strategy is nothing new. Years, ago a Metro Strategy revealed that 30,000 more people have to fit into the inner-west by 2031 with plans to concentrate residential development within centres and corridors with access 6 October 2011 to transport services. On Wednesday 20 June, department representatives 2 NEWS will be available at Strathfield Library between 2pm and 5pm to answer questions and provide more information about planning for the future for Sydney.
“This is the first time we’ve actually undertaken this kind of consultation and we are looking forward to getting direct feedback about what people want in the long-term plan for Sydney,” said Department of Planning and Infrastructure Deputy DirectorGeneral, Ian Reynolds. The consultation follows the release of a discussion paper, Sydney over the next 20 years, in early May by the NSW Minister for Planning and Infrastructure Brad Hazzard. The sessions will include a travelling discussion board where people can write a comment to pin to the board and read what other people have had to say. In particular, people are invited
to provide comments on what they want for their home, job and lifestyle. “The new Metropolitan Strategy will become the overarching plan to manage this growth over the next two decades, and that’s why we want to hear from a broad cross-section of the community at this time about their vision for Sydney in 2031,” Mr Hazzard added. Feedback from the consultation activities will help inform a new Metropolitan Strategy, which will be prepared alongside the Long-Term Transport Master Plan and State Infrastructure Strategy. A draft Metropolitan Strategy will be released for comment later this year.

Australia’s first Citizens’ Panel to review council services had its inaugural meeting on Saturday 5 May to discuss needs for the City of Canada Bay. The thirty member panel, who were randomly selected from the1500 expressions of interest that were received from residents with the help of partner newDemocracy are looking to pioneer community consultation in Australia. “The makeup of the final panel is approximately even in terms of gender with a slight female skew and closely follows the Census profile of the community by age brackets, including in its penetration of 18-24 and 25-34 groups which are not traditionally strong participants for council engagement. Occupationally, we see diversity and the group includes doctors and lawyers to childcare workers and students. Tellingly, none of the participants have attended a council meeting before, nor have they been in contact with councillors. This is a group of everyday citizens rather than a group of those
highly engaged with council,” said a council spokesperson. The panel will meet five times to deliver recommendations to Canada Bay Council on what services it should provide and at what level, plus referencing preferred funding sources. During the first meeting on May 5, panellists were briefed about the process and heard expert talks to help members get their head around the complexities of Council services and costs. Iain Walker of newDemocracy Foundation said the process would be challenging and complex but achievable. “In an opinion poll you can’t hope to get a considered response on an intricate trade-off, so what we’re doing is essentially the opposite of this. We give detailed information and time for discussion before asking for a judgment from the Citizens’ Panel.” “We are confident that with around forty hours being committed by each of these panellists, and the wide-ranging access to Councillors and staff
we saw on Saturday, that the independent judgment of a statistically representative sample of the community will be of interest to the entire community,” he said. Mayor Angelo Tsirekas says the process is interesting.” The panel has a wealth of expertise so it will be an interesting and in-depth process. They will make recommendations to Council in September about service levels with a current budget of around $300 million over four years,” the mayor said. The panel will set and agree upon their guidelines for participation to ensure that even if bias exists, that constructive, critical thinking is applied. Throughout the process external expert speakers will be on hand to help. Council will be provided the engagement process findings in October. Other local council representatives have said that they are interested in the progress of the Panels and are watching with interest.

Roads boost after federal budget Funding from the Roads to Recovery program is largely provided to local government authorities to assist them to maintain and upgrade their local roads. John Murphy, said the portions allocated to councils in the Reid electorate for the next financial year are $279,077 (Auburn), $120,194 (Burwood) and $269,363 (Canada Bay). Taxpayers have been warned by the ATO to steer clear of tax avoidance schemes as they prepare to lodge their 2012 returns. “It is at this time of year we see an increase in the number of tax avoidance schemes being promoted,” said Tax Commissioner Michael D’Ascenzo. “Modern tax schemes can be very sophisticated and may masquerade as complex investments or other arrangements that can appeal even to experienced investors.” According to Mr D’Ascenzo, these schemes might promise ‘wealth creation’ or financial security. Others can exploit your social or environmental conscience by promising you large up-front tax deductions for donations to charity or ‘green initiatives’. Many are marketed via social media or glossy promotional brochures, with offers of exclusivity and the stamp of approval from so-called ‘experts’. “As appealing as an investment opportunity may sound, sometimes the promised tax benefits might not be available under the law,” Mr D’Ascenzo explained. He believes that not getting the right information and advice can lead to a large tax debt, including substantial penalties and interest. “Doing your research and seeking independent financial and tax advice from someone not involved with the arrangement before investing is your best protection against promoters of tax avoidance schemes, or alternatively you can make an enquiry with the ATO,” he added.

Should more pets be able to live the high life? With over 2 million residents living in apartments in NSW, and the expected continued growth in strata living, it stands to reason that there will be an ever-increasing interest in owning pets in apartments. Danielle Marchand, an expert in strata management who owns Pristine Living Management on Majors Bay Road in Concord has valuable advice for pet owners who are looking to move into apartment living and are concerned about their animals. “Pet ownership in strata living has always been a difficult area, from both sides of the argument. The NSW Office of Fair Trading receives a significant number of complaints regarding pets in apartments – either about others keeping pets without permission; or from those being refused permission to keep a pet,” Dannielle says. “Often, older apartments have had ‘no pet’ policies for quite some time, and some owners may
have chosen to buy into these buildings based on these policies. There is of course evidence to suggest that responsible pet ownership is both good for our health and good for the health of our communities,” she adds. Susie Willis from the Petcare Information and Advisory Service had advice on which pets best suit apartment living. “Many smaller dogs are suited to indoor living including breeds such as Whippets, Chihuahuas, Pugs, Poodles, and French Bulldogs,” Ms Willis advises. Susie also noted that cats are well suited to apartment living being naturally clean, adaptable and with endless ability to snooze, a cat makes a great indoor pet. Being a responsible pet owner means caring about the impact the pet has on neighbours and the general amenity of the property. David Ferguson of Strata
Community Australia (NSW) says that the SCA has developed a pet application which can be used for potential pet owners. “To encourage people to do the right thing and not end up
with a complaint being made against them, a pet application form has been developed and is downloadable at www.stratacommunity.org.au/strata-living/pets. The idea is to make it easy for
potential pet owners to apply to their Executive Committees for permission and for the committee to have all the information they need to make a decision. This includes vaccination details and
microchip details”, he said. To find out more, contact Danielle Marchand at Pristine Living Management at Suite 207, 43 Majors Bay Road or call 1300 774 784.

Mini Vinnies helps hungry and homeless Students at The All Hallows Parish School, Five Dock know that they have many mouths to feed, and they’re only too happy to help. Children at the school who are aged between seven and nine years old are involved in the Mini Vinnies program which started one year ago and provides lunch to the homeless once a month. This month, the school received a visit from Minister for mental
health, Kevin Humphries, along with John Sidoti who spoke with All Hallows teacher and program coordinator, Carmen Pollifrone, who talked to both members about the work that students are doing in helping the homeless. Mini Vinnies also makes contributions to the Matthew Talbot Hostel and the students are currently knitting scarves for the homeless under the banner, ‘100 stories of love.’

High hopes for MLC gymnasts by Amelia McVeigh
MLC Burwood’s Rhythmic Gymnastics program may be smaller than many clubs, but that hasn’t proved a hindrance to the girl’s achievements. At t h e re c e nt St ate Championships it was a case of smiles all round as MLC Gymnasts walked away with 15 medals and four overall trophies. Gymnasts Miranda Lorsurdo,
Dominique Glass, Isabella Goodman, Michaela Bourbous, Kylie Ly and Tara Wilkie, train in the MLC Rhythmic Gymnastics High Performance Program and have been selected to represent NSW at the 2012 Australian National Championships Tara Wilkie, a current student at MLC School, recently returned from Slovenia where she was placed tenth in the All-Around Invitational event. She also secured third place at
the NSW State Championships in the Junior International division, putting her in good stead for the upcoming national championships. Miranda Losurdo is also heading into the national championships after claiming the state in her Level 7 event. This follows last year’s victory, when MLC was home to two national champions in Rhythmic Gymnastics, 12-year-old Tara Wilkie and 10-year-old Kylie Ly. These gymnasts train up to 25
hours a week under the watchful eyes of head coach, Ms Delia Halmu. She believes the girls manage a balancing act of training with study and extracurricular activities. “These girls are supported strongly by all the coaching staff and MLC School to achieve these results,” Ms Halmu said. The 2012 Australian National Championships will be held at the State Sport Centre in Olympic Park, which starts on 22 May.

Bound for Germany, Croydon dancer Alexei Bernard.
The Malvern Hall building in Croydon was a curiosity for the young Alexei Bernard fifteen years ago, when, as a pre-schooler, he wanted to know what was inside and why all the young people were coming and going. The Dorothy Cowie School of Dancing in Croydon and Drummoyne, now run by Donna Burland, has been providing dance tuition to many preschoolers, students and adults for over seventy-five years, but there has been no-one quite like neighbour Alexei Bernard, who began classes as
a three-year-old. Now 18, Alexei has been offered a position to study Bachelor of Dance in the German school Palucca Schule, Dresden. “Alexei has always been a bright and promising student whose passion for dance, especially in tap and ballet grew with each year,” says principal Donna Burland. “He’s always been a wonderful student to teach - well mannered, polite and extremely hard working. We acknowledge his amazing achievement with a great deal of pride.”
In a fightback to gain ground after the release of the federal Budget last week, Member for Reid, John Murphy has warned that the new SchoolKids Bonus is in jeopardy after Opposition Leader Tony Abbott confirmed that the Liberals will vote against the initiative. “The Liberals have revealed their true colours by saying they will vote against the Government’s new Schoolkids Bonus,” Mr Murphy said. “In the Reid electorate 6850 families of 12,050 local school children would receive an automatic cash payment of $410 for each child in primary school and $820 for each child in high school.” “This amounts to more than
$7 million for the electorate of Reid,” he added. “Labor’s new SchoolKids Bonus replaces the Education Tax Refund. Approximately 5150 local families were missing out on the full amount of the ETR, including 1100 who made no ETR claim at all for 2010-2011. “Our new payment will ensure that families are getting every cent they deserve, up front. It makes it easier for families as there is no paperwork, no need to keep your receipts, just a twice yearly cash payment for every child at school.” “The Liberals will deny local families this money to pay for the costs of essentials like school books and uniforms.”

Book Bites with Mitchell Jordan From Seven Hills to the Seven Seas By Mark A. Bruhwiller Mark Bruhwiller has drawn on his experience in the navy for his memoir. As a 15-year-old boy, he was inducted into the Royal Australian Navy, where bullying and bastardising was rife at the time, signing on for 12 years and being sent to Vietnam soon after. In From Seven Hills to the Seven Seas, Mark candidly details his fractious past, from his experiences as a young child, to his disrespect for his parents and friends, to his betrayal of his first loving partner. Careful, He Might Hear You By Sumner Locke Elliot One of the saddest things about this book is that so few people remember its author. They should, for it is truly the great Australian novel. Based on Elliot’s own life, it tells the story of a young boy named PS, whose mother has died and whose father has deserted him. The arrival of an enigmatic aunt, Vanessa, throws his life into chaos in a simultaneously heartbreaking and comic account of childhood that for first-time readers will be nothing short of a revelation. This newly reprinted edition includes a candid introduction by actress Robyn Nevin who starred in the film adaptation of the book. Capital By John Lanchester The dreaded global financial crisis that most of us would rather forget returns in John Lachester’s brilliant new novel. Set in England, the book details the inhabitants in Pepys Road, an area that is “like being in a casino in which you were guaranteed to be a winner.” The main character is Roger, a willing worker in the corporate world, but he is a tad dull in comparison to the gaggle of other lively inhabitants.
A gut feeling for healing Story and photo by Mitchell Jordan
Seventeen years ago, Sue Larkin was a sick woman. So sick, in fact, that the wife, mother of three and teacher at Strathfield Girls’ High was forced to stop working and struggled to make it through the day, shrinking to a size 8, and suffering from extreme diarrhea and fatigue. Today, she may look a picture of good health, but her journey back was a long and difficult one that began in Concord Library when she discovered a book on irritable bowel syndrome. After reading the book, Mrs Larkin stopped all wheat, sugar and dairy and began meditating, eventually returning to teaching. “When I went back to school, I felt that I was on the wrong life path,” she recalled. She gained a degree in reflexology, and opened Sue’s Healing Haven in Concord where she has worked with many people in similar situations to the one she found herself in.
“Seeing my clients get well again is the most rewarding part of my job,” she said. “My life has changed dramatically, and I feel like I can really contribute to society by using my past experiences to offer a valuable service.” Reflexology, sometimes known as “zone therapy” is a form of treatment that involves applying pressure to the feet and stomach and seeing how these correspond with body organs. “Most people think that reflexology is just a good foot massage,” Mrs Larkin said, “but in fact we are working the inner-health of the body and we are trained to work with the medical system and doctors.” Mrs Larkin has a particular interest in gut health, a topic that she will present to the public through a workshop, ‘Gut Health – it does matter’, held at Concord Library on Saturday 9 June from 10am to 1 pm. “It will teach people about gut ecology and how to correct it,” she said.
For bookings, phone 9743 4017.

Under 14s join forces
Blocker conquers croquet
Lacking the numbers to form two independent teams, the Five Dock Dockers and Strathfield Raiders Under 14s have joined together to be known as the Five Dock Raiders. In a move that was made to both ensure the longevity of an Under 14s team in the inner-west and to keep the young players involved in the sport, the Raiders will now be able to play in the Inner City Combined Competition (ICCC) against teams from Eastern Suburbs, South Sydney and St George Districts. It’s not golf, Blocker. The football player attempts croquet. by Mitchell Jordan
Croquet is the last sport you’d expect a rugby league star to play, but when Steve ‘Blocker’ Roach was challenged by Strathfield Croquet Club, he didn’t hesitate to accept. Blocker called in to the club to meet his new opponent, Brian Doughan as part of the TV show, The Game Plan. “I invited him [Blocker] to play for
two reasons, Brian explained. “First, to publicise and promote the club, and secondly because I thought it would be funny to watch a footballer play croquet. Blocker did admit it was different to anything he had done before. “I like blood sports, he told Burwood Scene. “This is the first time I’ve played croquet – and it might be the last. And Brian’s thoughts on Blocker’s skills?
“He’s a good footballer, Brian said. Club member, Ruth Bridger believes that being featured on national television will do much to lift the profile of an often misunderstood sport. “We’re being featured to an entirely different audience, she said. “We’re trying to change people’s ideas about us being an Agatha Christie-style game and showing that we’re a sport that’s very active.

According to the club, the joint venture has offered the boys the continued opportunity to play local rugby league with their mates as they strive to reach their full potential under the guidance of experienced and dedicated coaching staff, making the combined venture firstly possible and successful. At the time of writing, the team had played three trial matches in the lead up to the 2012 competition.
