The Australian casualty rate, at 65% (proportionate to total embarkations), was the highest of any nation and as the centenary approaches in 2015, it’s the sacrifice of the mostly young men that we should be focussing on.

LEST WE FORGET I
invite you to join with our local community to reflect, remember and commemorate the ANZAC spirit on Sunday, 22 April at Burwood Park.
This year marks the 97th anniversary of the fateful landing of Australian and New Zealand troops on the shores of Gallipoli, and the 53rd year a service of commemoration has been held here in Burwood. This service is not only a moving occasion steeped in tradition, but paramount to bestowing upon our younger generations the foundational values of the ANZAC spirit: selflessness, patriotism, honour and mateship. We will pause to honour Australian service personnel who have paid the ultimate price in war and peacekeeping operations, as well as those who bravely continue this work. They have provided a landscape of freedom that all Australians can enjoy today. The ANZAC march will commence at 2:40pm from the corner of Church Street and Burwood Road. This will be followed by the Memorial Service at 3pm at the War Memorial Arch in Burwood Park.
John Faker
IMPROVEMENTS CONTINUE During the last year, Council’s infrastructure program has been committed to keeping Burwood’s roads and footpaths safe and looking their best. Improvements in the Burwood area continue with a number of projects recently completed. These have included:
NEW ADDITION FOR PROWSE RESERVE I am pleased to announce the opening of a new playground facility at Prowse Reserve in Croydon. This latest recreational area is sure to be a hit with children aged 2-5 with features including a slippery dip, playing apparatus and a dual rocker. It’s all contained inside a securely fenced area that is floored with environmentally-friendly rubber matting. There are also two new park benches for parents to sit and relax. The original playground equipment installed at Prowse Reserve a few years ago will remain and be dedicated to the enjoyment of older kids.
• Reconstruction of a new pedestrian crossing with kerb extensions at Cooper Street in Strathfield (near Mosely Street). • Asphalt road resurfacing on Violet Street, Croydon (between Burwood Road to Rose Street); Mitchell Street, Enfield (Coronation Parade to Burwood Road); Burwood Road, Enfield (Liverpool Road to Bligh Street).

Croydon Park songstress headed for the big time It was all good news for Georgia McCarthy last Friday on April the 13th when, with a maturity belying her tender fifteen years, the Croydon Park songstress delivered a stand out performance to make the Grand Final of Network Ten’s revival of Young Talent Time. Burwood Scene visited Georgia at her new home-away-home, the Village Performing Arts Centre at Alexandria, where she is perfecting her craft under the guidance of many industry leaders. “The opportunity to perform at my best on Young Talent Time is incredible. For me, giving the best performance I can, which incorporates different aspects including dance and a story line is what I’m about,” Georgia said. “Every song has its message and has to come from your heart. I will be really focussed on the Grand Final and I can promise that won’t just stand still and sing,” she added. The Year 10 student is now home schooled, completing her work in the

Love or hate it, the carbon tax isn’t going away. Federal MP Mark Dreyfus, visited Canada Bay Council this month to discuss economic opportunities for local government generated by the carbon price and a shift to more efficient use of energy. “Canada Bay has already undertaken a variety of measures to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon pollution and educate the local community and businesses about climate change,” Mr Dreyfus said. “The carbon price will help support these efforts through a range of programs.” Mr Dreyfus also met with Auburn City Council and Burwood Council to discuss funding opportunities within the Clean Energy Future package.
morning before heading off to the Village Performing Arts Centre, which was opened two years ago by Jackie Howard, formerly from the well-known Brent Street. Georgia and her sisters Brittany and Annie made the move to Sydney from Tasmania over three years ago when their parents Victoria and Steve, were seeking better opportunities for the elder Brittany who has an intellectual disability. “Brittany has been at PLC in Croydon and loves it as does my younger sister, Georgia McCarthy on YTT with Rob Mills Annie who is in Year 8, is also a singer. We all support each other,” Georgia explained. “Home schooling works for me because it’s flexible and the Distance Education program is really good.” Georgia plans to continue her training but is eyeing a pop career citing one of her favourites as English singer songwriter Jessie J. “One day I want to perform at Madison Square Gardens,” Georgia said.

Are you aged between 16 and 22 and up for a challenge? ClubsNSW is looking for community-driven young people to represent NSW in its annual Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge. This year is the seventieth anniversary of the Kokoda campaign fought between July and November of 1942. ClubsNSW is sending the recipients on the 10-day trek from 24 September to 5 October. Physically, the participants will deal with trekking through mud and rain, across mountain ranges up to 7,000 feet above sea level while carrying a 15kg backpack. Mentally and emotionally they will learn about themselves and work as a team with a group of young people selected by local clubs from across the country. The trekkers will also learn about the Kokoda Track, its significance to Australian military history and detailed stories of the young Australian soldiers who fought on the track. One of last year’s NSW participants, Jason McKinnon, said he was grateful for having the opportunity to be part of the Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge. “This experience has helped me to grow as a person in many ways,’’ he said. According to ClubsNSW CEO, Anthony Ball almost 500 young people have already completed the challenge.

New water playground for children at Enfield Enfield Swimming Pool in Henley Park is to be renamed to the Enfield Aquatic Centre and in keeping with the name change, a new look has been approved for aspects of the facility, which is one of the oldest in Sydney. “The renaming to Enfield Aquatic Centre will reflect the evolving nature of the
centre from more than just a swimming facility,” said mayor, John Faker. In the coming months, the existing children’s play pool will be replaced by a 250 square metre state-of-the-art water play park to include fifteen water features that will not require fencing and be safe for children and adults to enjoy together.
“The water park area is very safe because it won’t contain a body of water and therefore will not require constant lifeguard patrols,” the mayor said. Improvements to the barbecue area, concourse and kiosk are also planned. Burwood Council is expecting that these enhancements will spark a new level of interest
and visits to the Enfield Aquatic Centre. Upgrades should be completed by November this year. The Enfield Aquatic Centre conducts Learn to Swim classes all year round in the indoor 25metre pool and is the home of the Enfield Life Saving Club, whose members compete in the national championships each year.

Asthma in children rises
Motorists must make sense of school zones, inquiry finds Many residents are finding themselves confused by the operational hours and road rules of school zones a Parliamentary Joint Standing Committee inquiry has found. Charles Casuscelli RFD MP, State Member for Strathfield, agreed with The Joint Standing Committee on Road Safety which found that the main concern residents had with the school zones is the confusion surrounding when they are in operation. “Nine times out of ten, people are speaking about how confusing the current system is. The average motorist who doesn’t have children in school is unsure about when school holidays start and finish,” he said.
According to Mr Casuscelli, a lot of people are unaware that school zones apply on school days that are pupil-free. “Also, as private schools and public schools have slightly different term dates, commuters often find themselves in a situation where half of the schools have a school zone in place and the other half don’t,” he added. The Report recommends the installation of flashing lights at all schools in NSW, to assist motorists in knowing when the 40km/hr limit applies, along with recommendations including the improved safety awareness campaigns and initiatives as well as educating motorists more thoroughly on school zones.
Warning issued for ipods Croydon Public School has issued a warning to its students that MP3 players, such as an iPod, can cause permanent hearing loss, with experts saying that volume doesn’t have to be ear-splitting to cause damage. According to the school’s website, decibels for conversation measure 60dB, traffic noise around 80dB and louder noises such as a plane taking off, a motorcycle or firecrackers can range from 120dB to 140dB.
“Listening to music at levels above 80 decibels is going to damage hearing. The volume on MP3 players can reach more than 130dB, depending on the model of player and type of earphones used,” the website states. It can take only 28 seconds of listening at too-high-a-volume to cause permanent hearing damage with younger children most vulnerable. Warning signs include vague feelings of pressure or a ringing sound in the ears.

Meriden’s Tildesley Shield Tennis doubles champions. (L-R) runners-up Veronika Bunoza and Matea Arambasic with winners Genevie Ulanday and Alex Osborne
Meriden blitzes Tildesley Shield Tennis for third consecutive year More than 250 girls from 26 independent schools competed in this year’s Tildesley Shield Tennis tournament at Pennant Hills Park in March, with Meriden School winning for the third consecutive year. The winning school is determined by the average of games won throughout the three-day tournament. Meriden’s 478 points was ahead of its nearest rival by 193 points. Meriden players dominated, securing nine of the sixteen
available spots in the quarter finals and winning first and second places in the doubles. 16 year-old Genevie Ulanday’s showed impressive form in her third consecutive win for the Shield, this time with doubles partner, Alex Osborne, who is ranked 90 in Australian women’s tennis. Earlier this year she placed fifth in the U16 Australian Championships. “We’ve been training as a doubles team for six months, spending time together on and
off the court. We’ve put in a lot of hard work, so it’s really rewarding to win,” Genevie said. Ken Rosewall, who attended the tournament commented on their great teamwork. The Year 11 students are looking to continue their tennis careers and Genevie hopes to secure a scholarship to university in the USA after her HSC next year. Meriden School offers a special curriculum program for girls who are at elite level in their sport.
Parents and carers of children with asthma are being urged to take the condition more seriously as new data reveals asthma-related deaths among under 15 year olds have more than doubled since 2006. The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics’ data recorded 17 deaths in 2009/10 for children under 15 years compared to seven deaths in 2005/06. National Asthma Council Australia Chair, Dr Noela Whitby AM, was shocked by these statistics. “This is the first time we have seen an increase in asthma-related deaths among children – it’s deeply concerning and should be a major wake-up call for parents,” she said. While the overall asthma death toll has decreased significantly from a peak of 964 deaths in 1989 to the latest toll of 416 in 2010, Dr Whitby fears the recent rise in asthma deaths in children could be a sign parents are becoming too complacent. “Asthma can be fatal so all carers need to be vigilant and ensure they have an up to date written asthma action plan for their child and schedule regular reviews with their doctor,” she said. The National Asthma Council Australia is also urging all Australians to ensure they are familiar with the correct first aid steps. It recently launched a Kids’ First Aid for Asthma chart, which can be downloaded from the National Asthma Council Australia website: www.nationalasthma.org.au

Petition to demolish historic Camden Lodge In a bizarre twist to the ongoing Camden Lodge saga, Strathfield Council received a petition signed by 32 residents from eight neighbouring properties on Burlington Road in Homebush to demolish the house due to health risks at its council meeting on April 3. The petition submitted by Burlington Road resident, Dr Andre John Ross cites Camden Lodge as posing a health risk and supports its demolition. “We received the petition at the last council meeting and are taking it as a submission to the new Development Application lodged by the owners last month to demolish the house,” a council spokesperson said.
Previously, on February 24, Strathfield Council had issued Camden Lodge owners, Auburn mayor Ronnie Ouiek and his wife, with a Notice of Proposed Order to restore the house back to the condition it was in prior to the fire damage following advice that the house could be saved. The owners lodged a second Development Application to demolish the historic house in March, thus requiring another public exhibition. “Strathfield Council cannot pursue the compliance side of the Notice of Proposed order issued on February 24 because there is a new DA for demolition, which is on public exhibition until April 23,” the spokesperson said.

Age is no barrier when it comes to playing croquet. As part of this year’s Senior’s Week events around the inner-west, 13 new participants came along to Strathfield Croquet Club and, according to member Ruth Bridger, it probably won’t be the last time they have a swing. “Most participants decided to join the follow-on, six-week pro-
gram of lessons, that also includes game experience,” she said. “All participants demonstrated a joie de vivre, and a desire to improve on their personal best.” The club recently had another success in the Bronze Singles Championships held at Croquet NSW Headquarters, Tempe. Strathfield came first and second in this division.
Ms Bridger added that the club is always looking for new players to come and join in the fun. “Strathfield Membership continues to grow, and has excellent new members who participate in all sorts of ways, from making first time visitors to the club feel most welcome, to playing socially, or later on if they choose, representing the club in competitive play,” she said.

Book Bites with Mitchell Jordan The Children of the King By Sonya Hartnett On the surface, Sonya Hartnett’s third novel for younger children has much in common with her previous two. All are set in the war and involve the exchange of stories and learning important lessons, but this story of a brother and sister who are sent to stay with their uncle in England during the Blitz is nowhere near as dark. It’s also a tad slow-moving albeit layered in meaning, making it best suited for those aged 11 and up. Think Smart & Lose Weight By Sandy Bröcking Sometimes it seems like the last thing the world needs is yet another book about how to lose weight. Yet, there is something undeniably honest about Bröcking’s self-published memoir in which she puts forward some interesting theories and anecdotes, such as her decision to “stop being fooled by the dairy industry” and “put the yoghurts back on the shelves.” According to Bröcking, her bad eczema disappeared not long after. Journey Around My Family By Jan Gross Originally written as a creative writing thesis, this travel memoir tells of the protagonist, a mother in her sixties, who embarks on a lone trip around Tasmania’s coast and islands only a week after the loss of her ailing husband. Gross writes not only about Tasmania, but of her family’s history and Aborigine history, also.

Mitchell family reunion Members of the Mitchell family from Scotland, going back to 1753 when Archibald Mitchell was married, are holding a reunion at the Seachange Club, Arundel on Queensland’s Gold Coast on June 30. The Gold Coast family of Kellie Christie, Peter Mitchell, Judy Roberts and Betty Marks can trace their ancestors from Archibald to now through Archibald’s son, Hugh, his son James and grandsons Thomas and John - who came to Australia in 1841. The two brothers moved from Sydney to Moredun Station, 40kms from Glen Innes, where John married Elizabeth Pitkin in 1847 and lived for 28 years. The couple had twelve children, the

youngest being William Arthur who married in 1895 and had nine children. Brother, Colin Thomas was the father of the Gold Coast family members. The family is trying to locate those who descended from any of their great grandfather’s children and also anyone who descended from Thomas’s family of eight. Thomas died in 1899 and was buried at Inverell. It is also known that Mary Mitchell, nee Mitchell, emigrated to NSW in 1836. Baseball strikes a home Community run for the inner west Rosebank College’s catcher, Michael Evans.
Laundy looks to clean up Reid Craig Laundy has been appointed by the Liberal Party as its candidate for Reid in the 2013 federal election. NSW Liberal State Director, Mark Neeham, says gaining the seat of Reid is a top priority. “For the Liberal Party to win government, we need to win seats like Reid and that’s why we are selecting strong local candidates early,” he said. Mr Laundy, who has lived
in the Reid electorate all his life, is particularly critical of the polarising carbon tax, which he believes will have an adverse effect on many people. “With the world’s biggest carbon tax starting on July 1, it’s only going to get worse,” he said. Labor’s sitting member John Murphy has held the seat (formerly Lowe) since 1998.

Rosebank College’s Baseball team secured their first grand final victory with a convincing thirteen run win in the Ryde Hornsby Baseball League over Tiger’s 5. Coach and parent, Steve Yarnold, described the win as momentous. “The Tigers had beaten us before but our team
trained hard and were ready to give it their best,” he said. Player Jordan Livian said that it was a rewarding experience. “I’m so happy to win a grand final, all the hard work the team put in has paid off,” he said. The team was established in 2009, spurred by parent Heather Livian who was keen to introduce
a sport to the College that suited both boys and girls. The team are looking forward to retaining their title in the 2013 season, where they will be playing in the U19 age group. The College also hopes to establish an U14 and U16 team with the help of Ryde Hornsby Development Officer Matt O’Neill.
Every year large numbers of frogs are accidentally transported to Sydney, arriving in fruit trucks, building supplies, landscape supplies or in cut flowers. Many are a long way from their original home and once in Sydney, are exposed to many dangers including traffic, domestic pets, polluted water and exotic diseases. Many die but the frogs that don’t cannot be sent back to the bush because once they have entered Sydney (or other alien places) they pick up bacteria and fungi, which is not native to their original area. An exotic micro-fungus is sweeping through parts of Australia because frogs have been moved back and forth into new areas. In an effort to control the spread of diseases, lost frogs are not returned to the wild but the Frog Rescue Service ensures that lost frogs do not die unnecessarily and are cared for. The Frog and Tadpole Study group has a Frog Rescue service. Lost frogs are collected and checked for signs of injury or disease before being quarantined for two months, during which time they are cared for and brought back to a fit state of health. After a final check and, if cleared, homes are found with a suitable frog carer. If you find a lost frog call the FROG HELPLINE on 0419 249728.

Australian Ice Dance Champions, Danielle O’Brien (from Strathfield) and Greg Merriman (from Canterbury) skated into history at the recent World Figure Skating Championships in Nice, France by becoming the first Australian ice-dance team to make the World Championship finals, achieving 20th place and scoring a PB by over five points. During the qualifying Free Dance round, the Sydney couple who began their career at Canterbury Ice Rink, broke into the main championship for the first time in five attempts, despite the heel of Greg’s boot splitting away in the last minute of their performance. Danielle became aware something was amiss as they headed into the final section. “I didn’t know what was wrong so I told him to keep going as we went into the last lift. He did it on the other leg because he knew he wasn’t stable on the boot where the heel had broken. We saved the lift and it wasn’t until we got off that I realised how bad his boot actually was, Danielle recalled. The pair followed the qualifying round with a stand-out performance in the Short Dance, again receiving another PB, catapulting them into the top twenty couples advancing to the finals.
“It was history in the making, said Australian team Leader, Melina Simjanovic. “With only the top two groups left, Dan and Greg were happy with what they thought would be a 21st place and therefore miss the final round but as a higher French team faltered and the scores were announced, we knew that they had moved up. “Dani looked shell shocked and it took a while for the result to sink in to both of them. Building towards a successful 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics has been the long-term CLASSIFIEDS goal for the young couple, who moved to Bloomfields Michigan last September to train with Pasquale Carmerlengo and Anjelika Krylova. “We have more belief in ourselves now and it helps to be training in a team who are supportive and have a coaching staff who are supportive. We know we need to push ourselves and we have learned this through our training environment, Danielle and Greg said after the event. “This event has definitely been a turning point for us. It’s really nice to receive so many compliments and good wishes. Danielle and Greg have returned home for a month-long rest before heading back to USA to resume training and the new international season.
