Shelley spreads tai chi take -up S
helley Sha isn’t exaggerating when she says that tai chi changed her life. Three years ago, the Burwood resident suffered a stroke, which affected both her speech and eyesight. At the suggestion of a doctor, she began tai chi and soon started to witness numerous changes within herself. “I wasn’t really that keen on doing tai chi, but it was the only option,” she said. “In the beginning it was hard, but I can feel the difference it has made.” The differences are noticeable not only in Shelley’s physical health, but also mentally. “To practise tai chi you need a lot of concentration and concentration stops you from having a lot of unwanted thoughts,” she explained.
by Mitchell Jordan
Tai chi can also be a social form of exercise. Joining Shelley in Burwood Park are a number of others who practise the meditation as a group. Shelley is quick to point out that she is not a teacher or instructor, she is merely providing people with a chance to follow her and meet others. “People motivate each other and make connections,” she said. “In particular, there are a lot of Asians who come to Australia and don’t know anyone.” Shelley practises tai chi from 7 to 8 am in Burwood Park. All are welcome to join her.
Tai chi has been a healer for Shelley Sha and others.

Bad for jobs.
$1.8 Billion tax hit on car industry
Record debt and deficit
Carbon and mining taxes
Kevin Rudd launched a $1.8 Billion tax assault on the car sector – with zero consultation. This resulted in immediate job losses and will make it harder for everyday Australians to buy cars.
Kevin Rudd’s Labor Government has racked up the highest debt in our nation’s history. Interest payments alone are more than $8 Billion a year – resulting in job losses and less money for hospitals and education.
Kevin Rudd voted for the world’s biggest carbon tax. The carbon tax continues to drive up everyday prices and cost jobs across dozens of industries. He also supported a new mining tax – even after warnings over job losses.

BURWOOD above regulation speed. It’s a tough household here. The penalty for mice going the wrong way, if it involves any space our family occupy, is eradication. The fridge is wheeled out first, then the stove and about time that was hauled out anyway
if you get my drift. The unauthorised visitors are indeed coming from under the floor behind the stove and also underneath the adjoining cupboard. Now it’s time for a hammer. Cupboard drawers go, in pieces, to the backyard. Why stop there? I
can’t bear the 1980s apricot overhead cupboards and by now I’ve got a taste for the demolition business. It can all go and traps are set. More cupboard doors join the growing pile in the backyard and if nothing else I will scare the intruders away. The dog is certainly bemused and occupied with sniffing and scratching (yes, mice – we know where you are). That is until a trap or two go off and the inhabitants are still wiggling, dragging the trap towards the hole behind the stove. I freak out, dog goes ballistic, teenage daughter
screams “yewwwww” a lot. OMG! Let me spare you the more gory details, but traps and mice were removed, accompanied by screaming. We survey the destruction and add more then decide a kitchen reno is desired and essential. I’ve watched The Block and similar shows. How hard can it be? A few tiles off and new ones back on, new doors, some paint and Bob’s your uncle! Bunnings here I come. You see these flat pack do-it-yourself jobs and think “I can do that”, haul it home and set about the task of creating a kitchen
masterpiece. Nup. Doesn’t work like that. I survey the damage and all the newly bought boxes within which is contained the soon-to-be masterpiece. Screwdrivers and sheer determination fall short of what’s needed. Enter our next door neighbour and retired builder and carpenter (a miracle). What I thought would be one weekend became four weeks but the result is in with no thanks to me and all to John the Fabulous next door. There are now, No Mice in the House I Lead.

Inside Burwood’s secure CCTV compound
Massive CCTV grant for Burwood Council An even stronger eye will be on the inner-west after the Federal Minister for Justice and Home Affairs, Jason Clare announced a $473,655 grant to Burwood Council from the National Crime Prevention Fund from the Attorney General’s Department to increase its comprehensive CCTV network. Also announced was $100,000 to Canada Bay Council, which will enable that council to link up to Burwood’s established CCTV network, furthering the goal to have centralised monitoring across the inner-west. Burwood’s grant, the third highest awarded in NSW after Canterbury and Bankstown City Councils, will develop and implement a new mobile CCTV system and 3G wireless, upgrade existing current software and enable cross sharing of data, working with Burwood LAC and surrounding areas. “We have one of the best CCTV systems in the state, which not only assists police
investigations, but also helps deter crime and other illegal activities like graffiti and illegal dumping of items such as asbestos,” said Burwood Mayor, Cr John Faker. “This grant will greatly benefit our community by deterring crime in hotspots to ensure that our area remains a safe and friendly place for residents and visitors. Additionally, Canada Bay will now be able to use our established network,” Mayor Faker added. Burwood has experienced a decrease in crime rates since implementing the CCTV program five years ago, and working in conjunction with the Burwood LAC, there has been a 53 per cent reduction in robbery offences within Burwood LGA since 2010. 49 projects across New South Wales will share in more than $12.5 million under the Federal Labor Government’s National Crime Prevention Fund. In announcing the grants,
Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Justice, Jason Clare said that the funds were coming from the criminals as part of the $40 million fund that uses money confiscated from criminals to fund community safety infrastructure and youth outreach services and have been included in the Budget. “We are taking money from criminals and investing it across the country to help young people who are at risk of falling into a life of crime,” Mr Clare said. New South Wales Police Citizens Youth Clubs (PCYCs) will also receive more than $2.7 million of the fund to run four projects across the state. The crime prevention projects run by PCYC will be supplemented with the Cars for Crime Prevention Project. This will provide 22 PCYCs across NSW with a Holden Captiva to be able to provide transport to young people who participate in PCYC crime prevention programs.

Soil-turning at Library and Community Hub on Thursday
A NEW CHAPTER STARTS FOR BURWOOD LIBRARY L ast Thursday, I attended the soil turning ceremony for the new Burwood Library and Community Hub. This was a significant occasion for our community as it marked the start of construction of the state of the art facility.
Council Meeting – 26 August 2013 at 6.00pm in Council Chambers
The hub is located in the heart of Burwood, at the site of the old Council Chambers on the corner of Conder Street and Railway Parade.
Building and Development Committee Meeting – 9 September 2013 at 6.00pm in Council Chambers
Keeping in line with our values of heritage, pride and progress, the hub will combine the historic Council Chambers building with modern architecture, making it one of the premier community centres in Sydney’s Inner West and a point of pride for residents.
The hub will feature a large auditorium, public car park, 2,000m sq floor space, meeting and study rooms, a comprehensive multicultural catalogue, an innovative space for children and lift access.
This project forms part of our comprehensive capital works program which includes the new community hall at the historic Woodstock Community Centre and the 4.2 hectare wetlands at Wangal Park, both of which are currently under construction. If you would like to follow the progress of the new Library or keep up to date with the latest events and major projects, you can now follow me on Twitter: @ johnfaker.

Casuscelli returns fire Mum’s no obstacle for Marisa
Member for Strathfield, Charles Casuscelli has a few words of his own to say after Burwood Mayor, Cr. John Faker said that Burwood was being ignored. “The Mayor of Burwood is beginning to sound like the next Labor candidate for the seat of Strathfield,” says State MP Charles Casuscelli. “Mayor John Faker ‘s recent comments in the Burwood Scene following the Premier’s visit to Burwood small businesses are typical of his Labor colleagues, where accuracy is inevitably a secondary consideration,” said Mr Casuscelli. “If being ignored by the Premier extends to his government’s commitment to Westconnex, the largest infrastructure project of its kind in Australia and will be the catalyst for a dramatic improvement in living conditions in the inner west, then I hope we continue to be ignored in this way!
by Belinda Noonan
“If the result of being ignored leads to reduced workers compensation premiums and payroll tax for the thousands of Burwood businesses, then let there be more of it! “I am a little disappointed that the Mayor’s mischievous comments needlessly complicate an effective relationship between me and Council. Contrary to the Mayor’s assertion, there has in fact been no eviction from Wangal Park. We were able to negotiate an extension of time for Council in order to complete works as well as provide for an easement over the Department of Education site. For the record, Burwood Council has previously advised of its gratitude for this particular outcome. “The State Government’s preferred approach to the issue
of council amalgamations has been in the public domain for a long time. The issue has also been the subject of an extensive review which provided many opportunities for local communities to be heard including Burwood Council. “The recent Community Cabinet meeting held in Concord provided the community with direct access to Cabinet members where they were able to express their views on this and other matters. Likewise the Planning Review has followed an exhaustive consultation process with communities and other stakeholders. “True to form, imitating his Labor colleagues the good Mayor is playing a little fast and furious with the truth; I want the former Mayor back, before someone convinced him to bring politics to local Government!” said Mr Casuscelli.
Tribute to Ricky Daniele Sunday the 11th August we were shocked at the death of a great entertainer who was a household name within the Italio-Australian Community Ricky was the main show for “Ferragosto” in Five Dock the celebration of all things that are Italian. Ricky Daniele was a remarkable talent who has been “wowing” audiences for years. He sang in a number of different languages right across Australia. He has worked with many other International Artists and he was a regular favourite at festivals. I think Ricky’s greatest attribute was not only his vocal talents but his love for his family and wife who was regularly by his side at shows. He was a great family man. Nothing I can say or do can magnify the contribution of the man to life.
Returning to her childhood passion has paid off for Five Dock’s Marisa Lamonica. Last month, the 30-year-old featured as a contestant on the reality TV show, Please Marry My Boy, where she made it into the top ten. “Thousands of girls applied for the show and auditioned and I was lucky to make it through all the rounds,” Marisa recalled. Unfortunately for Marisa, she did not get any further in her pursuit to win over Carlo, the show’s star, when she came up against his mother. “Carlo was a really sweet and down-to-earth guy but I didn’t get to know him too well,” she said. “[His] mother was not fond of me, yet Carlo said I was the one for him.” Determined to make her mark in showbiz, Marisa has gone on to complete more auditions for both television and modelling. This year, she was featured on Channel 9’s Mornings following her appearance in Cosmopolitan magazine’s modelling campaign. She rejected the widely held belief that all models are unhealthy. “I’m a size 10-12 model, and that’s considered plus-size, which
by Mitchell Jordan
is ridiculous,” she said. “I’m lucky that my agency is always promoting curves so I don’t feel the pressure at all.”
Marisa decided to start acting three years ago, completing a one-year course at NIDA. “I started acting in high school and I didn’t want to have any regrets about not doing anything in life,” she said.

Food Court and Aldi open in Ashfield Mall Shoppers will be the big winners this week as Ashfield Mall celebrates the grand opening of ALDI and other food and specialty retailers from Wednesday, August 21 after Ashfield Mayor, Cr. Morris Mansour and Centre Manager Linda Lord officially open the area at 7.50am. In addition to the official ALDI opening, several food retailers will open including Dan’s Chinese, Subway, KFC and RED cafe. They will be joined by Dollar King, Scissor Taper Cut and Sydney Premium Meats on their inaugural day of trading. In September an additional food retailer, Kow Thai Thai will open. The mall now has an updated feel with new retailers, ALDI and the long-awaited food court after the extensive Kmart renovation a few months ago with wider walkways, new signage and larger fitting rooms. Ms Lord said the new ALDI store
would bring an exciting new offering for local shoppers. “ALDI was voted Supermarket of the Year for the past two years running and we’re delighted to be able to bring this new shopping experience to the seven million visitors to Ashfield Mall each year,” Ms Lord said. “The new store is 1,500 square metres and with over 1,300 products on offer will help Ashfield Mall continue to improve its modern day shopping experience in line with local expectations.” An ALDI spokesperson promised low prices and great value. “In the last CHOICE Supermarket survey in 2009, ALDI was found to be 25 per cent cheaper than our competitors, a testament to the great value we continue to offer, and we look forward to extending this value to the Ashfield community,” the spokesperson said.

@ SCHOOL The Aboriginal debate Ashfield Boys’ High students were among Aboriginal secondary students from eleven NSW public schools who took part in the 7th annual Aboriginal Secondary Students’ Great Debates at Parliament House last Friday. The students debated topics that included whether Aboriginal people should have a proof of identity document, local
Aboriginal language should be mandatory in all secondary schools and that the Yirrkala Bark Petitions have been the most instrumental documents in recognising the rights of Aboriginal people to date. Other topics debated were that not all Aboroginal people still suffer as a result of being dispossessed of their land and recognising academic achievements.
All good doggies come out to play Since 1962, PLC Sydney has hosted its Annual Pet Show for Guide Dogs NSW/ ACT, raising more than $500 000 towards the training of guide dogs for visually-impaired people. This year, the show will be held on Saturday 31 August. Guide Dogs Fundraising Coordinator, Carla Torell, said that PLC Sydney’s Pet Show has been an important part of helping to raise awareness of and support the vital work being undertaken. “Guide Dogs NSW/ACT exists to enhance the quality of life of people living with blindness or impaired vision, by assisting in their achievement of independence through access and mobility. We believe people living with impaired vision have equal rights to other people, and respect their right for human dignity. We rely on the support of the community to provide our vital services to children and adults who are blind or vision-impaired,” she said. Traditionally, Year 9 PLC students organise the show, which forms part of the school’s service learning program. “The students run the entire fundraising event themselves, from cold-calling businesses for donations to organising stalls, competitions and entertainment. It’s amazing how resourceful teenage girls can be,” said Pet Show Student Organising Committee Coordinator, Joanna Golotta. The girls visit the Guide Dogs training facility in Glossodia to learn about the challenges that a vision-impaired person

Catholic school sets sights on Strathfield A new Catholic primary school is set to open in North Strathfield in 2015 following increased demand from parents. The new school will have a three-story permanent building, a library and playground over a total of 4,853 square metres. The Catholic Education Office, Sydney has purchased the new premises from part of the site at McDonald College, which lies south of the new planned boundary. “We are delighted to be co-operating with McDonald College to deliver one of Australia’s vibrant education and interdisciplinary precincts in the Homebush Bay area,” said Dr Dan White, executive director of Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Sydney. Up to 500 primary school students are projected to enrol at the new school that will open adjacent to McDonald College
at North Strathfield to meet the increasing number of students in the area. Dr White said that the new school would enrol students from Homebush, Silverwater, Sydney Olympic Park, Newington, North Strathfield, Rhodes, Liberty Grove and Wentworth Point to keep pace with increasing student numbers in the area. Member for Drummoyne, John Sidoti MP congratulated Dr White on the news. “This is great news on top of the previous announcement of a primary public school opening in 2015 in Concord West,” said Mr Sidoti. “The demand for Catholic schools has far outstripped capacity in the inner-west.” Dr White said planning is also underway for a fifth Catholic primary school to open in the area in Mortlake. In the Canada Bay LGA, 39.2
per cent of the population is Catholic – 11 per cent higher than the national average. “[The North Strathfield school] will be the fourth Catholic primary school for the growing area, with enrolments in neighbouring schools – St Ambrose’s at Concord West, St Mary’s in Concord, and St Martha’s at Strathfield – overflowing,” Dr White said. “These schools now educate nearly 1,300 students and will reach capacity by the time the new school opens.” Mrs Gemma Donegan is one of the parents thinking about sending her three-year-old daughter, Shannon, to the new school in North Strathfield. “My husband and I have wanted to send our child to a Catholic school from day one,” said Mrs Donegan, who has been living in Homebush for the last nine years.
Shock tactics steer young drivers in right direction Inner-west high school students were brought face-to-face with a car crash this month. Students from schools including Bethlehem College, Concord High School, De La Salle College, PLC Sydney and Strathfield Girls High School witnessed a chilling car crash re-enactment which organisers hope will increase their awareness of the risks of dangerous driving.
“The re-enactment is so real and so confronting for them,” said Stephanie Wilson, bstreetsmart organiser and SWAHS Trauma Coordinator. “The students are so captivated by the dramatisation that you could literally hear a pin drop. It’s not often you see this kind of response in an arena full of teenagers.” The re-enactment is followed
by highly emotive, real stories from young crash survivors, which reinforce messages communicated by the actors in the dramatisation. “The other important factor is that there is more to it than just whether you live or die in a crash,” Wilson added. “Young people often don’t think about the tragic consequences if they end up with a brain injury.”

Soccer stoush up and it’s not on the field A $500,000 promise to Concord Junior Soccer Club for renewing its home ground facilities at Edwards Park by Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey and Liberal candidate Craig Laundy on Saturday was trumped by a $1million announcement for the same work in a joint announcement by the Minister for Education, Bill Shorten and Member for Reid, John Murphy on Monday. Plans for new facilities at Edwards Park are currently being drawn up by Canada Bay Council in consultation Concord Junior Soccer Club with club president, Danny Coral saying that the work is long overdue. “The facilities at Edwards Park haven’t changed in 40 odd years and now we have over 1,000 registered players. The plans include new change rooms, public toilets, disabled toilets, a canteen, committee room and store room,” President Danny Coral said.

Concord Junior Soccer Club has raised $250,000 towards the estimated total cost of the project, believed to be between $1.1 and $1.2million, with Canada Bay Council promising the club a further $400,000 to facilitate the construction through Section 94 payments. The $1million L ab or announcement, delivered 48 hours after the Liberals $500,000 promise, would be delivered through the government’s Liveable Communities Program. “A re-elected Rudd Labor Government would provide $1 million to upgrade Edwards Park,” Mr Shorten and Mr Murphy announced. “The funding will go towards the construction of a new pavilion with a canteen, office facilities and new change rooms.” “The local council and the

Raising children is an election contest We have arrived at the point where the early raring of children is now government policy fodder. Being paid for having a baby for either 18 weeks or 26 weeks, depending upon the Labor or Liberal Paid Parental Leave policy, is a 2013 Federal Election issue, and in some ways is reminiscent of the Howard Government Baby Bonus introduced in 2002 and the 2007 Rudd Government’s $1 billion policy that provided a computer for every child in years 9 to 12. The previous generation did not receive anything like it as they brought up their children in the latter part of previous century, nor did they expect to. Any parent of a child born since 2002 has done well from governments on both sides. Having a child has been much easier for any parent since 2002 than ever before in Australian federated history. Bonuses, family payments, child care rebates, computers and now 18 or 26 weeks paid leave. Federal Member John Murphy has said the latest data showing Labor’s Paid Parental Leave (PPL) scheme is working well in Reid with data showing that 2,800 parents have already taken up the current scheme. introduced on January 1st 2011, eligible working parents can get government-funded pay when they take time off from work to care for a newborn or recently adopted child. Full-time, part-time, casual, seasonal, contract and self-employed workers may be eligible and provides two payments; Parental Leave Pay and Dad and Partner Pay. The scheme provides eligible working parents (usually birth mothers) with up to 18 weeks’ pay at the rate of the national minimum wage. “The figures show 2800 parents have been recipients of Labor’s PPL scheme in Reid and 310 dads or partners have also benefited from this scheme here. This shows that Federal Labor’s scheme is delivering for the modern, dynamic workforce we have here in Reid,” Mr Murphy said. The Labor policy states that, “Government-funded Parental Leave Pay is usually provided by employers to long-term employees in their usual pay cycle. Parents who do not receive Parental Leave Pay from their employer or who do not have an employer, will receive the payments directly
from Centrelink”. Tony Abbott’s Coalition policy for Paid Parental Leave would provide mothers with 26 weeks of paid parental leave, at their actual wage or the national minimum wage (whichever is greater) plus superannuation. Reid Liberal candidate Craig Laundy said that Coalition’s PPL scheme will strengthen the economy. “Our PPL scheme will result in a woman earning the average full time salary for women of around $65,000 receiving $32,500 and being around $21,300 better off. Labor’s scheme only offers a total payment of $11,200 which reflects 18 weeks of the minimum wage,” Mr Laundy said. “Importantly, the Coalition’s PPL scheme also includes superannuation. If a woman earning $65,000 has two children at ages 26 and 29, she will be around $50,000 better off in retirement than under Labor’s scheme, which does not include superannuation.” Mr Laundy also said that under the Coalition’s PPL scheme, fathers will be eligible for two weeks out of the 26 weeks for dedicated parental leave at their actual wage or the national minimum wage (whichever is greater), plus superannuation.
job it does developing young soccer players and this thoroughly deserved $500,000 will further assist the social cohesion in the community that sport can deliver,” Mr Hockey said. “I would also like to congratulate Craig Laundy on his persistence in fighting for this funding.”
Teeth are on the Green agenda Greens candidate for Reid, Pauline Tyrrell, said last week that the Greens have a fully-costed plan to make it easier for every Australian to see a dentist and that they want to finish the job. “Oral health is important for overall health but unfortunately one in three Australians say they can’t afford to see the dentist. The Greens believe that your health shouldn’t be determined by your bank balance so we made dental reform a priority in this term of parliament,” said Pauline. “The Greens secured an investment of more than $4 billion and from the first of January, 3.4 million kids will be able to access dental treatment through Medicare. Thanks to the Greens, 10,330 families in Reid will be able to take their kids to the dentist as easily as they take them to the GP.” “We won’t stop until everyone has access to high-quality dental care,” she added. Lead Senate candidate for NSW Cate Faehrmann believes dental reform is affordable. “It will make a real difference in the lives of countless individuals and families across NSW, and lessen the burden that untreated dental disease currently has on our health system,” said Ms Faehrmann.

Lucky for some The tight contest for Reid was made a little easier for Labor’s sitting member, John Murphy who was pleasantly surprised to find out he was drawn number one for the Reid ballot paper as it will appear on Election Day on 7 September. Mr Murphy was absent from the ballot draw due opting instead to attend the No-Radioactive Waste rally held at Remembrance Park, Lidcombe. “We had all gathered to rally against the O’Farrell Government decision to dump radioactive waste from Hunters Hill in Lidcombe. Over 16,000 signatures have been collected opposing this move but the O’Farrell Government just isn’t listening,” Mr Murphy said. “This election will be a choice between strong Labor investment in our local community, or more Liberal cuts. I will continue to
campaign in my local area until 6pm on September 7 to ensure we get secure funding for schools, maintain our health services and protect workers’ rights for our community and all Australians,” Mr Murphy concluded. In Watson, Liberal Ron Delizio lucked out by drawing the coveted number one position. Greens Grayndler voters could easily become confused knowing who is who or if English is a second language. The top ballot spot was drawn out for Joshua Green, a Christian Democratic Party (Fred Nile’s group) and in fourth position is Hall Greenland for The Greens. Deputy Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese was thought to have tough opposition from The Greens but may luck out in the name confusion with Greens votes splitting away to Fred Nile’s group.

Tax returns bring benefits to super Industry super fund, Club Plus Super, is calling on Australians to consider contributing a proportion of any tax refund to their superannuation nest egg after some basic forecasting suggested that doing so could deliver a significant future return. The Fund found that if half of the average tax refund of a 30-year-old was invested into the average default fund as a one-off payment, it could be worth approximately $12,791 when the contributor was 65. “That figure relates to investing half of one year’s tax refund but if individuals used this strategy for a decade, it may equate to a future return closer to $100,000,” said CEO of Club Plus Super, Paul Cahill. “While it’s easier said than done to invest half of one’s refund, the reality is that most Australians won’t have the money they need for a comfortable retirement, so tax refunds could prove to be very valuable in addressing this problem.” Recent independent research commissioned by Club Plus Super suggested that most Australians aren’t making extra contributions to their superannuation. Of the 843 fund members surveyed, more than half of the respondents understood how much money they would need at retirement age in order to meet their lifestyle goals (51.6 per cent), but only one third of respondents (32.1 per cent) said they were making extra contributions to their super fund. “The average tax refund might buy a nice holiday to Fiji this year but if invested and left for 35 years – it could not only buy a trip around the world but even more importantly, a better standard of living and access to healthcare in retirement,” Cahill added. “Even if five or ten per cent of a tax return was invested into superannuation each year, it would still make a significant difference to an individual’s comfort in retirement.”

A $60,000 Legal Aid NSW pilot program aimed at reducing breaches of Apprehended Domestic Violence Orders (ADVO) was launched by NSW Minister for Women Pru Goward, Attorney General Greg Smith SC and Strathfield MP Charles Casuscelli outside Burwood Court House on August 9. With this pilot service, lawyers from Legal Aid NSW will provide a specialised duty service at Burwood Local Court to ADVO defendants for approximately 12 weeks. The project will be evaluated by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, and if successful may be eligible for wider roll out. “Between January and December 2012, there were 12,781 incidents of breached AVOs in NSW. These numbers are extremely concerning as it directly affects the safety of women and children,” Ms Goward
by Mitchell Jordan
said. “People who have experienced domestic violence need to know that the legal avenues they seek for security and safety will work. They need to know that ADVOs will serve their purpose and give families a chance to rebuild lives free of intimidation.” “This project, co-funded by Legal Aid NSW is part of the Domestic and Family Violence Reforms announced in June 2013 by the NSW Government. The reform will focus on prevention and establishing a coordinated response across all agencies,” Ms Goward said. “In the past, defendants in ADVO proceedings have not been represented and may have consented to ADVOs without understanding the arrangements,” Attorney General Greg Smith said.

Around 1.2 million Australians live with osteoporosis but a further 6.3 million men and women have osteopenia, according to a release which claims the risks can be prevented and reduced by thinking about bone health sooner rather than later. “You need to think about your bone health, make time for it, and make it a priority,” said Dr Sonia Davison, an endocrinologist at Jean Hailes for Women’s Health. “There are some simple things we can all do to reduce our chances of fracture and breaks. Looking after your bone health is not difficult.” Dr Davison listed research published in the Medical Journal of Australia earlier this year which identified three key steps to building healthy
bones and preventing bone loss throughout life. The three keys to bone health are having the right amount of calcium in your daily diet; getting enough vitamin D, and regular weight-bearing exercise “These days people have intolerances and dietary problems and some people are concerned that milk is fattening, so they avoid dairy foods that are a good source of calcium,” said Dr Davison. Men and women aged 19 to 50-years should have 1000mg/day, rising to 1,300mg/day for women aged 51 to 70-years. Men aged 70 years and over should also aim to have 1,300mg of calcium daily. “Use your skeleton as it was designed to be used,” advised Dr Davison. “Run, dance, go for a brisk walk and move as much as possible.”

Sales on the way up at Birkenhead Bucking the doom and gloom for retailers is Birkenhead Point Outlet Centre after reporting that their annual sales are up by 15% in June, 2013 completing a solid financial year. The centre’s multi-million dollar redevelopment and upgrade has boosted Birkenhead Point’s position in NSW, attracting a greater number of premium fashion retailer tenants to the centre in the last 12 months, including well-known brands Lee Wrangler, NIKE, ASICS and KOOKAI. The redevelopment has succeeded in creating additional and larger retail spaces, improved accessibility with easier navigation between levels throughout the centre and generated a mecca of food and dining options previously not offered at the centre. Birkenhead Point was delighted with the launch of two retailers’ first outlet stores;
KOOKAI boutique opened drawing huge crowds queuing outside the door on the opening weekend and ASICS opened their first stand-alone outlet store. Major store expansions by Coles, Oroton and Saba have also contributed to the growth with increased product offering and store appeal. “The changes at Birkenhead Point have invigorated the local community’s enthusiastic return to the centre”, said Gerard McSpadden, Abacus Property Group’s National Asset Manager, Retail. “This along with strong support from the fashion shoppers, shows our sales results continue to defy the current market retail trends.” Abacus Property Group purchased Birkenhead Point Outlet Centre in November, 2010. Hot, hot, hot for St. John Ambulance The PERi-Medics mission to administer food CPR, which was a ‘complete PERi re-sauce-itation’ of the Peri spicy sauce products to St John Ambulance Australia (NSW) at their head office in Burwood was a resounding hit with its volunteers. Late last month St John Ambulance demonstrated first aid techniques and showed the Nando’s team (which makes the Peri products) how to resuscitate a person who is in serious danger. According to Nando’s, “the PERi-Medics food unit is an elite squad of food re-sauce-itation specialists who are experts at reviving sandwiches, re-awakening taste buds and bringing leftovers back from a taste-induced coma”. Yes, this is blatant product promotion, but without corporate support, organisations such as St John Ambulance would not be able to sustain its operations. St John Ambulance Australia is a self-funded charitable organisation active in all States and Territories, dedicated to helping people in sickness, distress, suffering or danger. More than 4,000 volunteers give up their time to make our communities a better place through first aid and other support programs.

The inner-west is set to hear the sounds of renowned composed Elena Kats-Chernin, who has been commissioned to write musical scores to be performed as part of the NSW ANZAC commemoration project in 2015. Minister for the Arts, George Souris announced the project with Ms Kats-Chernin at the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway in Concord, and they were joined by the Parliamentary Secretary for Veteran’s Affairs,

I look forward to hearing these compositions, as they will provide an interesting insight into both war and music,” Mr Souris said. “The pieces will be performed at the Sydney War Memorial, and in regional communities such as Wollongong, Orange, Bathurst,
Wagga Wagga, Albury and the Northern Rivers. It will also be broadcast by ABC Classic FM.” Member for Drummoyne, John Sidoti, said he was pleased that a separate arrangement of the larger composition will also be developed for permanent presentation as part of the sound installation at the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway. “This will bring lasting benefit to the Walkway, which is the focal point of the Concord foreshore,” he said.

SOS pushes for yes vote

The truth about Aussie blokes and barbecues
by Mitchell Jordan
Potential changes to federal funding could have a detrimental effect on Strathfield, according to action group Save Our Strathfield (SOS). Nella Gaughan, co-chair, Save Our Strathfield, said that, currently, the Federal Government provides direct funding for local government projects. “Here in Strathfield, that has meant recent road upgrades on Cosgrove Road, Merley Road, Agnes Street, Bates Street, Hillcrest Street and Cecily Street,” she said. “So the federal governmentlocal government link has been working.” Ms Gaughan is concerned over an absence of the federal government-local government link within the constitution. “This leaves every single federal funding project open to legal uncertainty,” she said. Save Our Strathfield is calling to make a small change to the Constitution, formalising the existence of local government. “If the change isn’t made, federal funding would have to go through three layers of government, including state, before it gets to the local community that needs it,” she said. “And that’s virtually guaranteed to mean that Strathfield and other LGAs will lose money and control over how that money is spent. “Unless we get a ‘yes’ vote over the line nationally this year, direct federal funding for Strathfield, and therefore the viability of Strathfield itself, will be under threat.” A referendum on the issue, originally to be put to the people on September 14 was withdrawn when Prime Minister Kevin Rudd called the election a week earlier for September 7.
The knives are out on Aussie blokes with more than 61 per cent of women saying they are just as good as men at cooking great barbecue food, reveals a new survey. More than 1,000 people entered a survey conducted by Aussie mums website, Mouths of Mums and BeefEater Barbecues to dish the dirt on their blokes’ cooking habits in the lead-up to Father’s Day, the start of the official Aussie BBQ season. “The survey showed that only 7.3 per cent of dads do the cooking and cleaning in the
house while 74.3 per cent take control of the barbecuing,” said Ms Nikki Hills, founder and MD of Mouths of Mums. Most of the mums surveyed said they were glad for their partner to take charge of the BBQ and give them some much needed time off cooking chores, with 45 per cent saying they are happy for their partner to cook for a change. But while dads are happy to take charge of cooking the steak, they leave everything else to their partners with 77.7 per cent of mums being left to prepare the
accompaniments such as salads, dips and snacks and more than half (53.9 per cent) being left the job of inviting guests and 39.8 per cent having to clean up alone. “Clearly – men are happiest taking charge of the barbecue yet the majority of mums surveyed (52.6 per cent) said their partner’s BBQ cooking skills were very basic with snags and steaks the order of the day,” said Ms Hills. Interestingly, most men (59 per cent) are ‘self-taught’. It’s therefore no surprise that 82 per cent like to show off their BBQ cooking skills to their mates.
