Public outcry saves local town square
A
s part of its Draft Local Environment Plan, Strathfield Council had put on public exhibition a proposal to reclassify Strathfield Square from Community Land to Operational Land, which stated that council wanted to prepare for the potential future use of the land as part of the wider Strathfield Town Centre Masterplan. A reclassification of Strathfield Square to operational land could have paved the way for eventual sale of the land to developers. Current laws prohibit ‘Community Land’ from sale and any lease of licence cannot exceed twenty-one years. The potential impact on surrounding businesses raised concerns for landowners and business operators along The Boulevarde, many of whom formally objected to the

SW Local NSW Local Government Minister Don Page has council amalgamation on his desk to deal with. His announcement last month of the formation of the Local Government Review Panel to identify options for governance models, structural arrangements and voluntary boundary changes for councils is the first step in what will be a long and inevitable process. Former Burwood mayor and now Member for
desk By Belinda Noonan
Labor’s John Faker has previously and publicly said there is no need to amalgamate when councils are achieving economies of scale by sharing resources and service provision but also says he has no fear of any mergers. Strathfield Mayor Paul Barron has given his support to Minister Page’s Local Government Review Panel, but “remains cautious on what impact it may have on the Strathfield community.” Forced amalgamations before 2014 won’t occur as it looks certain that
BURWOOD Time is ticking for amalgamation Drummoyne, John Sidoti has publicly stated his support for amalgamation and it’s no secret that previous Labor government MPs were also in favour of council amalgamation, but in the long run were paralysed by
fear to the point of inactivity on most policy issues, thus throwing council governance onto the far back burner as they unsuccessfully attempted to halt their slide into potential oblivion. Current Burwood mayor,
the Premier will keep his election promise not to move on the issue before a second term. Strathfield Council has a lot of development issues on its plate, having been dragged to the table by concerned residents over the proposed Australian Catholic University’s development plans. After formally opposing the development, the council and residents are now waiting for a public (or otherwise) hearing. An issue that is larger than the ACU development for Strathfield Council is its Draft Town Centre Concept Plan.
Following a separate exhibition to re-classify Strathfield Square from Community Land, which is prohibited from sale, to Operational Land, which can be eventually sold but was showing in the draft plan as remaining at zero height, Strathfield business and land owners objected. After a public hearing on April 18 and upon hearing the concerns of its ratepayers, Strathfield Council determined that it would not proceed with any reclassification of Strathfield Square, but where does this leave the Town Centre plans?

WORK IT STYLE IT Style Workshops with FiFi Milne Rebecca and Dennis Thornton in the backyard of their Croydon Park home.
Dark days for Croydon Park homeowners by Mitchell Jordan
First homeowners Rebecca and Dennis Thornton are concerned that they will be left in the dark if a new development application is approved. In March this year, a DA in Georges River Road that proposed six units plus retaining the existing heritage item was approved. Now, Mr and Mrs Thornton are angered at the news that the applicant has lodged a new DA for eight units, which would see an additional two being built. According to a spokesman from Burwood Council, the DA is on exhibition until 3 May 2011. “People are able to make a submission in respect of this application,” he said. Mrs Thornton believes that if the development goes ahead it would have a negative impact on her and her husband’s quality of life. “The proposed two-storey construction is so close to our boundary that we would be deprived of sunlight in a huge portion of our garden for
most of the day,” she said. According to Mrs Thornton, her entire backyard would be in shadow from 9 am to 3 pm. “This is totally unacceptable,” she said. “We spend a lot of time in our garden, especially in the summer months, and we are about to commence renovations which would include a deck and landscaping so we can enjoy our garden and the sunlight further.” The quieter pace of life that made Croydon Park a drawcard for the Thorntons could also be at risk, she added: “The proposed development would significantly increase traffic congestion in the area, especially during morning and afternoon periods.” Mrs Thornton has already submitted a letter to Burwood Council and has met with some neighbours who have done the same. But if the development application gets the go-ahead, she sees only one solution for her and her husband and the house that was built by his great grandfather. “We would consider selling,” she said.

Council Community Grants for Burwood announced Children’s and elderly services have been the major recipients in the recently announced 2012 Burwood Community Services Grants Program, which assists groups serving the community. The grants aim to encourage community participation in the development and implementation of community-based programs and projects that meet the needs of local residents, in addition to maximising access and enhancing existing resources. Burwood mayor, Cr. John Faker awarded the successful applicants at a ceremony on Tuesday, 24 April, speaking on the importance of community groups. “Here in Burwood, we’re very fortunate to have a strong sense of community and a high level of support for our residents. This is maintained by the outstanding work of the community groups, their staff and volunteers,” Mayor Faker said. “I have a great deal of admiration for those who are committed and work tirelessly and selflessly to ensure residents are supported and assisted in their daily lives”.

Following the sale of the land at Conder Street and Wynne Avenue, Mayor John Faker has revealed that debts of $8million have now been retired and that $14million has been set aside for capital infrastructure for a range of projects including the new library, Wangal Park, a new hall at Woodstock plus road-works, footpaths and road resurfacing. “We are debt-free and will have a balanced budget in July this year,” the mayor said. “An additional sum has been put aside to purchase commercial property, which will provide a rental income back to Council.” Currently 53% of Burwood

Council’s income is derived through rates and domestic waste charges and the remainder via investment, grants and user charges. “Councils should no longer rely on rates as their prime revenue. Our seven-year goal is to purchase commercial property and have the rental income from those properties form 75% of our income, thus changing the reliance on rates as the major source. At between eight to ten per cent, we are looking at a return income to our rate payers from commercial property. This is money that can be used every year for new footpaths, roads, verge mowing, kerbs and gutters and so on,” Mayor Faker explained. ast week I had the honour of meeting with representatives of 16 community organisations and presenting cheques totalling $26,000 to assist them in their local initiatives. through a formal application process, Council awarded these entities with varying grant amounts to assist them in providing development opportunities that strengthen and promote our community, and that
also align to key strategic objectives highlighted in the ‘Burwood2030’ plan. I congratulate these organisations on their successful submissions, and sincerely thank their staff and volunteers for their tireless efforts in providing a vast range of services and resources that indeed benefit our local community. to view the grant recipients and their services, visit burwood.nsw.gov.au.

urwood’s cluster of restaurants, cafes and al fresco options is a unique and attractive feature of our municipality, and patrons deserve to enjoy their experience. Unfortunately, in recent weeks, there appears to be a growing trend where what has started as a wonderful night out in the town Centre has been soured by an encounter of unruly behaviour. I have received feedback from diners and restaurateurs, and experienced first-hand the unpleasantness of excessively loud vehicles
frequenting back and forth along Burwood Road, often at unsafe speeds, as well as large groups of people loitering and cars being parked illegally in this vicinity. I raised this matter at last tuesday’s Council Meeting, and Councillors endorsed my notion to call a meeting between myself, Burwood Police, Council’s General Manager and Community safety officers to discuss how this situation can be addressed and improved. I look forward to reporting back to you on the outcomes of this meeting in the coming weeks.

Always something to find in the “little shop” at Homebush For a tiny shop, Petals & Posies on Rochester Street in Homebush sure is interesting. What looks like to be primarily a florist from the outside punches above its weight when you step inside to discover a vast array of gifts, candles, chocolates, body care, jewellery, scarves – even decorative wall tiles. Owner and qualified florist Carolyn Turley has firmly established Petals & Posies in Homebush after only eighteen months and says that her motto, “Come in and be surprised” is exactly the response she receives from customers and now regular clients. “It was really nice to hear from a mum at St Pat’s last week when she told me that she had advised her friend to - ‘Go down to the little shop in Homebush – you are bound to find something’. It’s comments like that let me know I am on the right track,” Carolyn said.
“There is a lot here, yet you can see it all. But, believe you me, there’ll be a lot more by Mother’s Day.” Carolyn is offering a free gift with any advance floral orders ($50 minimum purchase) for Mother’s Day. Editor’s note: Owl ornament collectors will be happy shoppers in this shop!

Community land won’t be reclassified
›› Continued from page 1
reclassification and attended a public hearing held at Strathfield Library on Thursday April 19. Over two hundred submissions were received by council regarding the proposal plus a petition with three hundred signatures. A Strathfield Council spokesperson said that a report from the public hearing was expected by May 8, but that council had decided not to proceed with any reclassification. “We placed this reclassification option on public exhibition in order to gauge community opinion. However, Council’s
view is that the Town Square remains community land and this will be in the final LEP. This view is consistent with the Town Centre master plan where it has always been proposed that the Town Square remains open space and therefore remains classified community land,” the Strathfield Council spokesperson said. Memo Corp, which owns Strathfield Plaza, is the largest landowner in the area with concept plans showing two 15/16 storey towers on its site, where the current nine-storey Plaza now stands. The proposed Floor Space Ratio shown on the draft Town Centre Masterplan diagram
includes Strathfield Square, Churchill Avenue and Albert Road in the same Area 2 as Strathfield Plaza. For two 15/16 storey tower blocks to be built where Strathfield Plaza now stands, increased floor space ratio would need to be achieved. Strathfield Chamber of Commerce secretary, Sue McDonald said that many small businesses had been worried. “The main concern conveyed to the chamber is that Strathfield Council is going to make the Strathfield Centre like Bankstown Square Shopping Centre, with no shops located on The Boulevarde but located inside Strathfield Plaza. Making Strathfield Plaza
the centre of the Strathfield business district would mean that businesses located on The Boulevarde would die and the present property owners would be forced to sell at a cheap price,” Sue McDonald said. In mid March, Strathfield councillors Bill Carney and Helen McClucas met with NSW Treasurer Mike Baird to advise that $600,000 was required to develop tender documents. Mr Backhouse said that $2million had already been spent on feasibility studies with Cr Carney saying that “there was no shortage of interest (in the project)”, but no firm investors.

No rest for Canada Bay SES No sooner had Canada Bay celebrated its official opening of its new headquarters when 14 local SES Volunteers were called out following heavy rain. Initially, the teams completed local requests for assistance in the Canada Bay area – and then two of the teams moved on to the Holroyd area to assist – while the third remained and worked locally as more calls were received. Other volunteers remained at the headquarters to provide operational support. The local team had completed all jobs by 11.30pm, while the two teams in Holroyd worked through until the early hours of morning. The local headquarters
in Regatta Road, Five Dock remained operational until midnight. Of the eight local jobs, seven were leaking roof jobs and one a tree job. They were spread throughout the Canada Bay area from Rhodes and Concord West to Five Dock and Drummoyne. In overall charge of the Canada Bay response was Local Controller David Johnsun, who recently received his ten year-long service award from the Minister for Police and Emergency Services Michael Gallacher. Ride for life John Michell has taken his bicycle around the world and supplies bikes to Olympians, Ironmen, competitors, parents and children – anyone who wants to ride, but he hasn’t gone far from where he started riding as a teenager at Ashfield Boys’ High. His newly refurbished and spectacular Ashfield Cycles on Liverpool Road celebrates 34 years this month and 28 years in the same location. Along with current Hawaiian Iron Man Champion, Craig Alexander, Ashfield mayor, Cr Lyall Kennedy officially relaunched the iconic local business last month with declaring Ashfield Cycles to be “the best”. “Cycling is a funny thing,” the always cheerful John Michell told Burwood Scene. “It keeps coming back and is addictive. I started riding at school and mainly used to ride around the local area. Then I wanted to find out more about bikes. The quest for information just kept going and then I wanted to race bikes.” Whilst John modestly says he was just a club racer, he has ridden with the best including the man named as the greatest rider of all time, Belgian Eddie Merckx. Nicknamed “The Cannibal”, because of his insatiable desire to win, Eddie Merckx won everything there was in the 60s. “In January this year, I was able to go on a social ride with Eddie and there were only ten of us. It was one of the biggest thrills,” John said. “It was always my ambition to
ride in the Tour de France, as it is for many club riders like me. Cycling is a sport you can do all your life and I have had some great opportunities to ride with people like Eddie Merckx and also with Phil Liggett, (the legendary voice of cycling) when he was in Australia for the Tour Down Under,” John said. At Ashfield Cycles, the high tech carbon bikes are there waiting to be collected by their competitive owners, but the business is built for riders from beginners all the way to champion cyclists. The trained staff are cycling enthusiasts who can provide solid advice borne from experience. “This is a dream job for a guy like me,” says employee Jordan. “I’m enjoying mountain bikes at the moment.” All the gear, at affordable prices, is on display including a GPS for bikes, helmets, cycling shoes and other gizmos and gadgets. “We have bicycles for all ages and if you ride sensibly, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy the sport into your 70s and 80s because it’s a low maintenance activity from a physical point of view and injuries are low.” “I’ve had so many comebacks it isn’t funny and I’ll keep going. I really enjoy it.” During May, Ashfield Cycles is celebrating the reopening and 34 years in business. See in store for the May Sale birthday specials. Ashfield Cycles is located at 353 Liverpool Road, Ashfield.

Tali Gallery It was Dianne Stevens’ passion for indigenous art that led to her opening Tali Gallery. 18 months later, she and husband, Yh an n i h ave been delighted to discover that locals and visitors Di Stevens alike share that passion too. “I think there is a lot we have never heard about which is so fascinating and extraordinary,” she said. “The art provides a story that gives people insights into what is a remarkable culture.” The Rozelle-based gallery has attracted visitors from around the world. Ms Stevens is pleased with the response. “We’re doing very well,” she said. “We work very hard outside the gallery with special projects, like Indigenous scholarship exhibitions and have been involved with Newington College and International Grammar School.”
Education Centre in Summer Hill, has been tutoring students for seven years, but was previously operating as part of a franchise. “I found it a bit restrictive in terms of what I was allowed to do, so I decided to open my own. Working with children is what I enjoy most,” she explained. R3 Education Centre tutors students from pre-schoolers through to those in high school in both mathematics and English. With over 100 students enrolled, Ms Innes has plans for further growth, and is currently considering adding Mandarin to her list of subjects on offer.

La Bocca Deli Café Francis Faraone has been in the hospitality business since the 70s and knows an up-and-coming hot-spot when she sees one. That’s why she opened La Bocca Deli Café in October last year. The Croydon Park business prides itself on being like no other, both in terms of its location and product offering. “There were no cafes or delis here so we decided to offer that service to locals,” Francis explained. “We have a variety of different cheeses from around the world and have tried to provide a range of goods to appeal to all customers.” Coming up this month is a taste-testing event to help spread the word to new foodies. Re:Work December 2011 saw the exciting opening of The Ella Centre’s new recycling shop next to The Ella Centre in Dalhousie Street, Haberfield. Everything in the shop is recycled, including the fittings. Re:Work sells quality re-used clothing, shoes, jewellery, books, household goods and decorator items. According to staff, the response to the new shop has been “overwhelming”, in terms or both the amount and quality of donations received, as well as the level of interest from the shopping public. The shop is open Wednesday to Saturday from 9:30am to 12:30pm. This project will provide a venue for Ella clients, who are interested in this area of work, to develop retail skills as well as engaging the local community in supporting the work of The Ella Centre. Sugarplums & L’Academie Dance It was a lifetime love of children and dancing that led to Kristyn Tindall opening Sugarplums & L’Academie Dance in February last year. The Kristyn Tindall professional ballet dancer, who worked overseas for 10 years of her performing career, says that she wanted to run her own dance school since she was 12. “I have an affinity with children,” she said. Sugar Plums started with only one child, and now has 160 students. According to Ms Tindall, numbers are expected to reach 250. “The really rewarding part is that I created this business from scratch and everyone is coming to me,” she added.

A surprising journey through six remote art communities
Big night ahead for winners
Photo exhibition on show at Tali Gallery
We are privy to understanding the longest living continuous culture in the world through the artwork that is created in Aboriginal owned, remote art centre communities where people live traditionally. Despite much Aboriginal art displaying a remarkable contemporary aesthetic, it also represents an extraordinary anthropological record of spirituality and cultural practice. The Group Show reveals unusual glimpses of traditional life, quirky aspects of art creation unique to these remote

communities, the unexpected integration of aspects of ‘western’ culture, and evidence of the acclaim and interest in Aboriginal Art internationally. Very importantly, it shows how the creation of art keeps culture strong and is vital for maintaining health, pride and self esteem where First Australians choose to live on their traditional lands, because it is linked to country and law and an individual’s sense of place. The Group Show at Tali Gallery
in Rozelle runs from Friday May 4 until Sunday May 27 and showcases art curators from Yuendumu, Ramingining and Melville Island, DigiFM (Elcho Island), Amnesty International (Utopia Homelands), Wayne Quilliam (Walkley and NAIDOC Artist of the Year Award Winner) and Nathan Dyer (Kimberley). Daily guided tours of the exhibition will be held from 11.30am and 3.30pm. Don’t miss the screening of the film, ‘My Generation’, on Thursday 24 May at 6.30pm. Tali Gallery is located at 667 Darling Street, Rozelle.

No cost for Centrelink statements There will be no cost for customers who ask to have their Centrelink statement mailed to them. Minister for Human Services Senator Kim Carr has assured people that though Centrelink is improving its online services, they will still be able to access paper statements free of charge. “Yes, we are modernising - we are determined to ensure the public get the very best service new technology can provide. From 1 July statements will no longer be automatically mailed
to people,” he said. Mr Carr also hit back at claims that it will now cost customers $3.50 for a statement, saying that this was “completely untrue.” “Better online statements are part of our commitment to develop the most modern, user-friendly service we can for the 7 million-plus Australians who use Centrelink,” he said. People can request up-to-date statements for free at any time by calling 132 468 or by visiting their local Service Centre, where it can be printed.

President Medvedev awards Peter Tatarinoff with The Order of Friendship.
High honour from Russian President well deserved Following the Russian revolution in 1917, it is estimated that between 900,000 and two million people left, escaped or were exiled from their homeland as the socialist movement strengthened and remained in place until Glasnost was introduced by Mikhail Gorbachev in the second half of the 1980s, providing less censorship and greater freedom of information. It has often been acknowledged that the custodians of traditional Russian language, culture and even religious ceremonies were best kept intact by those who had fled from their homeland. For Homebush resident Peter Tatarinoff and his wife Kyra, preserving the Russian language and culture has been a lifetime labour of love. Peter was born in Northern China after his parents had fled Russia in the early 1920’s and spent his early years in Shanghai,
Sexual health conference gets social Reproductive and sexual health will be put under the microscope at the seventh annual Family Planning NSW Conference this August. The conference will include an expert review of the impact of social media on sexuality, the status of puberty in 2012 and an in-depth look at the sexual rights of people living with a disability. “We know there is a need for information on reproductive and sexual health issues, and as the state’s leading provider of clinical services, education and training, and research in this area, Family Planning NSW has a vital role in disseminating the information and encouraging debate,” said
Dr Deborah Bateson, Medical Director of Family Planning NSW. According to Dr Bateson, the issue of assisted reproductive technology will also be debated in an interactive forum facilitated by Jenny Brockie, host of Insight on SBS. “The forum will explore the different sides of the IVF debate, including the question of access and funding for women who have reached their 40s and beyond,” she added. The Family Planning NSW Conference will be held 17 and 18 August in Sydney with early-bird registrations now available for one or both days.

then Vietnam and France before arriving in Australia in 1951. Over the last fifty years Peter and Kyra have been involved in, or founded, societies and foundations, focussing on preserving Russian culture. From creating choirs, Russian folkloric dance groups and Saturday morning language classes to co-founding the Russian Historical Society in Australia, their input has been profound. Imagine Peter’s surprise last October when he received a phone call from the Russian Embassy in Canberra asking if he could go to Moscow the following week, at the invitation of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to receive The Order of Friendship - one of only five being awarded at Nijni Novgorod on the 400th anniversary of the conflict between Russia and Poland, which led to an uprising on November 4, 1612 and is now
Russia’s “Day of National Unity” (similar to Australia Day). “The call from the Russian Embassy came completely out of the blue,” Peter recalled. “Did I have a Russian passport they asked? I answered that, “No I don’t, I only hold an Aussie passport” and “could I leave the following week?” because the President has awarded me The Order of Friendship and he would like me to come to Moscow to receive it. It was such a shock.” The prestigious honour is not bestowed often and other recipients include opera legend, Placido Domingo and former French President Francois Mitterrand. “The Order of Friendship is given to people who have a significant input into the level of cultural links with Russia from within their own countries and for saving and preserving
Russian language and culture, again within their own countries,” Peter translated from the Russian document. The formal and theatrical award ceremony in Nijni Novgorod saw the Patriarch of Russia (Head of the Russian Orthodox Church) enter first, followed by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and finally President Medvedev, who presented the medals. “The way I feel is that this award is not just for myself, but for all people in Australia who help keep the cultural links alive - and especially it is also for my wife, Kyra. During the award ceremony and then dinner, my hands were shaking and didn’t stop until we got to dessert – and I do like dessert,” the quietly spoken Peter recalled. The Russian Historical Society in Australia has issued 23 books since their formation in 1995.

Victor joined 99 other talented science students in Year 9 and 10 from around NSW, ACT and Queensland on campus at the University of Sydney to do fun hands-on workshops and lectures in biology, chemistry and physics. The University of Sydney’s Science Gifted and Talented Discovery Program entrance exam was sat by 1,583 students from 94 schools, with only the top 10.8% of students invited to the workshop. “Students get the chance to discover different areas of science and get involved with hands-on activities that they wouldn’t normally cover in school through the University of Sydney’s Gifted and Talented Discovery Program, said Louise Atkins, manager of school programs and Underg radu ate Recruitment, Faculty of Science. “All the activities are fun and the students love it. The University of Sydney’s Science Gifted and Talented Discovery Program has been running since 1996 and has had over 1,500 students participate since its inception. “As well as challenging talented science students with the activities, the program gives students an insight into studying science at university and as a possible career, Louise added. Combined school concert at Town Hall on May 7
Musical legends join tomorrow’s stars for schools concert Renowned conductor Richard Gill OAM will lead over 600 young musicians in a must-see concert for anyone passionate about music and music education. ‘In Concert’ will feature an exciting repertoire of choral, jazz and orchestral music, performed by the NSW Department of Education and Communities’ Arts Unit’spremier music ensembles, the combined Secondary Schools Choir and a pre-concert talk with Richard Gill, one of Australia’s most pre-eminent and admired conductors and musical educators. ‘In Concert’ – only the second of its kind – takes place on Monday, 7 May at Sydney Town Hall. The pre-concert talk commences at 6.15pm, followed by the concert at 7pm. The 600 students from 67 schools (list hereunder) across the state will perform an exciting and varied repertoire, including Bartok, Vivaldi, Sondheim, Wagner and
Bernstein. Kim Sutherland, head teacher, Creative and Performing Arts at Merewether High School, was full of praise for the opportunities In Concert gives students. “In Concert is valuable because it exposes students to repertoire they cannot possibly attempt in most schools. “The opportunity to perform in a quality venue such as the Sydney Town Hall with an orchestra is not something we can replicate, especially in regional areas.” “I find the idea of working with a group of secondary students absolutely irresistable,” said Richard Gill OAM. “I have never lost interest in working with students, especially those that sing! When secondary students sing, it’s very special,” he said. Tickets for the performance, including the talk with Richard Gill start from $28. See www.cityrecitalhall.com for tickets.
A new winter garden at Santa Sabina for Enviro Week
Santa’s Kings and Queens of green
The first week of May will see Santa Sabina eco leaders ensuring that all students maintain the College’s commitment to all things green as Environment Week is celebrated. From nude food - wrap-free lunches to a daily dose of green facts, awareness raising activities will assist students to be mindful of their roles as stewards of our fragile planet. Tallies will be taken of the amount of waste that is recycled each day while on the Primary School campus children from Kindergarten to Year 5 will compete for the title of ‘Kings and Queens of Green’ for the best class at paper recycling. A new ‘Winter Garden’ will be dug and planted on the Secondary School campus following the success of the first garden which has seen flourishing herbs and delicious spinach flavouring lunch time
food stalls held by the student Enviro Committee. A low energy awareness afternoon will also be a feature of the week. Already this year Santa Sabina students have celebrated Earth Hour, Clean Up Schools Day, while recycling occurs every week and tree planting is a feature of Outdoor Education Camps for students from Years 4-9. Children from the College’s Early Education Centre Mary Bailey House have visited the nursery to choose the plants for their garden which they tend. “Energy conservation and sustainable practices are an important feature of our futures- focused learning community at Santa Sabina College,” affirms College Principal Ms Kate Clancy. “Our students of today are the leaders of our future; they need to be encouraged to live sustainably and ethically.”

Battle on the croquet field Strathfield Croquet Club in Redmyre Road held the semi-finals and finals of the 2012 Bronze Division Singles competition on April 21 with two local members Brian Doughan and Richard Thomas battling for the trophy. Richard came out the victor in the game which is likened to chess on grass in a fiercely fought competition. Several spectators attended the event who were attracted to the Club during the recent Seniors Week events. On the international stage, Croquet’s reigning World
Champion, South African Reg Bamford is currently in Adelaide contesting the 13th World Croquet Championships against 79 competitors, one of whom is 18 year-old Victorian, Robert Fletcher who is the first Australian to ever be ranked number one in the world. Strathfield Croquet Club is also attracting some younger players and will soon begin coaching School of Exercise Science students from the Australian Catholic University. The club is happy to receive calls from
Heather Smallbone, a coach and referee, with Richard Thomas and Brian Doughan after the local Bronze Division Singles match.
