ustralia will be without a unique woman after Barbara Holborow lost her battle with cancer, peacefully, at her home in Croydon Park on Wednesday May 23. What a woman! What an extraordinary person. with a tumour in January, she wrote a Barbara’s Buzz column for Burwood Scene imploring her neighbours to get active and join her ‘TAG’ (The Action Group) to make Croydon Park a more interesting place to live. It has been enriching and a privilege to have known Barbara. We had dinner a number of times, spoke on the phone or at her home. She loved to “get out”, talk to people – discuss issues, advise and advocate but I had the impression she wanted the adults to “shut up” so she could hear the children. We could

Quietly after that dinner, without telling anyone, Emily changed her course selection from business studies to Law and Psychology. Her explanation was that she wanted to find out how and
why young people got into trouble and then what the law surrounding them was. “Mum,” she said. “It won’t earn loads of money but it’s what I want to do.” What Emily ends up pursuing at the end of her study is in the future but what a great beginning. This is the Barbara Holborow OAM legacy replicated thousands of times over for all the young people she touched in her 81 years.

Two objections but LEP moves ahead A motion has been passed by Burwood Council to confirm the long-term planning vision for the area, the draft Burwood Local Environmental Plan (BLEP), despite objections from two councillors. The move forward comes after a six-week consultation period that saw residents and property owners participate in open house sessions with councillors and planners and prepare 159 submissions and 12 petitions on the document. According to Burwood Mayor Cr John Faker, the BLEP is a planning instrument that is consistent with previous development guidelines approved by Council. “Our planning vision remains unaltered,” said Cr Faker. “The BLEP is a commitment to sustainable growth, a move towards the future with an eye

firmly connected to our past, our heritage and our renowned residential areas. But councillors, Lesley Furneaux-Cook and Christine Donayre were not convinced, voting against the LEP at the Extraordinary General Meeting. “If I could split my vote I would,” said Cr Furneaux-Cook,
who spoke out against developments to Burwood Town Centre. “Burwood Town Centre has already delivered up to a 1000 per cent increase in density by concentrating residential targets within the town centre so that the remainder of the Burwood community would be protected,”
she said. “We are yet to see the impact of the increases on our infrastructure – now we have even more. In NEWS Council’s 3own report, it indicates that along 6 October with the Burwood Town2011 Centre there is already spare capacity for extra housing.” According to Mayor Faker,
the BLEP sets out to concentrate any future development in the Burwood Town Centre and along the high-traffic corridor of Parramatta Road, ensuring Burwood provides quality infrastructure, safe amenities and a family friendly atmosphere. In addition to the draft BLEP, Council has invited the Strathfield Sports Club, MLC School and East Croydon Park’s Flower Power to submit separate Planning Proposals (PPs) that would address matters raised during the public exhibition of the BLEP. Council will also be progressing several PPs with other parties to address submissions raised in respect to specific precincts. Council will now submit the draft BLEP to the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure for finalisation as exhibited, with minor changes that do not necessitate re-exhibition.

Battle lines are drawn as council take legal action against the ACU A meeting at Strathfield Town Hall on Saturday May 26 organised by the Residents Action Group fighting the Australian Catholic University’s $55million development proposal on Barker Road heard Mayor Paul Barron announce that Strathfield Council will take the ACU to the Land and Environment Court over breaches to its development consent. The decision to take legal action follows the results of independent traffic counts commissioned by Strathfield Council over the past few weeks, which indicated a breach of consent by the university. At the Town Hall meeting, Cr Barron said that council would pursue the matter “to the end”. Legal action would be pursued in the Land and Environment Court. “The battle lines are drawn. After expert advice, it was resolved that Strathfield Council will take action against the Australian Catholic University,” Mayor Barron said to lasting applause as he made the surprise announcement. “We will go to the Supreme Court and then the High Court if we have to. We are in it to the end.” These are the words Strathfield residents have been longing to hear as speakers, including the Strathfield MP Charles Casuscelli, thanked the action group leaders, Jane Pistolese, Mark Phillips and Eddy Moussa for their determination to keep the community informed. Council lawyer David Baird, told the residents that Strathfield Council has compiled the evidence it needed to mount their case. “We have evidence that we don’t want to disclose publicly that will come as a shock to the ACU as a result of recent council surveys,” Mr Baird said. Strathfield MP, Charles Casuscelli, who had previously sat on the fence regarding the ACU

development proposal currently before Planning Minister Brad Hazzard as a Part 3A application, came out in full support of the residents. “My personal position on this issue has shifted significantly in the past couple of weeks. I totally object to the ACU proposal in its entirety. The ACU has to go back to square one,” Mr Casuscelli declared. Action Group leader, Mark Phillips advised resdients that the university has expanded well beyond what is reasonable and was “most likely illegal.” “We believe that the ACU has enrolments in excess of 5,000 this year and are accommodating up to 1500 students at any one time,” he said. Jane Pistolese urged residents to write to local MP’s,

S A rEguLAr diner and shopper along Burwood road and in the Town Centre, I can relate to the local community’s reactions to acts of idiocy and unruliness in our cosmopolitan hub. That is why last week I met with Burwood Police to discuss residents’ concerns regarding antisocial behaviour and speeding within the Town Centre, particularly along Burwood road. my discussions with detective Acting Superintendent Jim Stewart and detective Acting Inspector Jim deeley resulted in Burwood Council and the local police resolving
to examine educating shop owners on reporting crime and calling the police as well as additional patrols throughout weekends and on Sunday nights. It is important we ensure Burwood remains an attractive place to live and work, so that the next generation – my four young children included – can enjoy all that our vibrant community has to offer. As mayor of Burwood, it is a high priority of mine to address ‘hoon’ and antisocial behaviour so that we can all better enjoy the great shopping and dining experiences
to be had in our Town Centre. While Burwood Council and Burwood Police will work to ensure this situation is improved, I also encourage local residents to take an active role in reporting offences by calling the local police station on 9745 1333, or joining the Burwood Safety Committee by calling 9911 9916. I am encouraged by my meeting with the Burwood Police, and I look forward to continuing our work to improve the Town Centre and the Burwood experience. In sadder news, I have been deeply affected by the
very recent loss of one of Burwood’s local residents, Barbara Holborow oAm; an inspiring woman who not only made our area a better place, but improved Australia. I had the pleasure of spending time with ms Holborow on a number of occasions, often discussing her latest achievement in her fight for legal rights for children. ms Holborow set an example for us all in her resilience, compassion and courage; characteristics that I encourage everybody to emulate. As mayor of Burwood, I will do all that I can to ensure her legacy lives on.

parents.” “Grandparents are often spending their superannuation on school fees, uniforms and excursions when they should be spending the money on themselves.” “Grandparents of today are miracle workers,” she said. Barbara Holborow knew all about neglected children having fostered many and eventually adopting Jacob, an
aboriginal boy who was put in her care almost 36 years ago. As a solicitor in a private practise at Glebe, Barbara provided pro bono advice for the women’s refuge Elsie’s, and was asked to care for 13-month-old Jacob for six weeks while his mother went into rehab. The mother never came back and at 14 years old, Jacob asked Barbara to adopt him. “I said no and Jacob asked, ‘Don’t you love me? I explained that he is a black boy with a white woman and that the elders in his Aboriginal community will not be in favour of such a move,” Barbara said. “So what did he do? He asked for a solicitor’s name and number and adopted me instead. There was a great prejudice at the time and it still exists. To an extent I can understand it.
Jacob has taught me the difference, and there is a tremendous difference. The Aboriginality never ever leaves them. Jacob has this saying, ‘never do today what you can do tomorrow’ and isn’t that opposite to how we, as white people think?” Jacob, now 37, has added to Barbara’s family with a young son – Jay Jay. When a spade can be called a shovel, Barbara would say it. As a diabetic, where her body wouldn’t go, her mind and mouth did – or as she told 2GB last October when asked if she would ever retire last year after receiving an award from Premier Barry O’Farrell, she replied, “No bloody way. What for? There was a thousand years worth of wisdom in that room last night. It’s got to be used.” As tributes poured in for the Kids’ Champion, daughter Louise Holborow said that her mother was an inspirational person to many people. “This is a sad day and we are all trying to cope. Our mother touched the lives of so many,” Louise said at the family home in Croydon Park. The funeral service will be held on Friday June 1st at St Andrew’s. Fr Chris Riley will take part in conducting the service. Burwood Mayor John Faker said Ms Holborow’s passing was a sad loss for the community. “Barbara Holborow lived a life that touched us all, whether we knew her or not. Her work on legal rights for children changed the nature of our society for the better and she paved the way for a brighter future.”
Barbara Holborow OAM is survived by daughter Louise, son Jacob, grandchildren Elizabeth, Jack, Tom and Jay Jay and great-grandchildren Sebastian and Scarlett.

ORMER magistrate Barbara Holborow OAM, aged 81, passed away peacefully at her home in Croydon Park on Wednesday 23 May at 9.45am and has been remembered as a fearless campaigner for children’s rights. Ms Holborow, the 2012 NSW Senior Australian of the Year, was a staunch campaigner for children’s rights since becoming a solicitor at age 39, before being appointed as a magistrate in the Children’s Court in 1994 until her retirement 12 years later. During her time on the bench, Barbara allowed television cameras into her court, believing that an open process would help reform the system. The outspoken, passionate defender was responsible for changing the life-long prospects for thousands of young people and propelling legislation that now provides free legal aid for children. The best-selling author of three books, Barbara never let up in her advocacy for children and was regularly called upon for counselling and for media interviews. Last September, Premier Barry O’Farrell announced Barbara as an Ambassador for the first NSW Grandparents Day, which was held the following month. Ms Holborow said at the time that, “Grandparents Day should be non-commercial because grandparents don’t need gifts,” Ms Holborow said. “We need a hug and a card written by the grandchild. That’s all.” “There are grandparents who are carrying out the duties of parents when they should be hopping into a caravan and touring the country or sitting around. Slice of success for Gee Jays pizzeria After just eight months in business, Gee Jays pizzeria is fast becoming the must-eat restaurant for pizza-lovers across the inner west. The Croydon Park-based business stepped into the spotlight at THE this year’s Inner FRIENDLY PLACE TO SHOP West Business Awards where it took out the award for Pizza Restaurant. Humbled florists win two awards For Lucy Abednego, the prospect 27 years ago of winning a local and national award for her business, Lucy’s Florist in Summer Hill, would have seemed unbelievable but a dedication to her craft and a love for flowers has culminated in two accolades for the now larger family-run business. Lucy’s Florist won Best Florist in the 2012 Inner West Local Business Awards on May 16, which followed an award for the national Australian Business Champions Award in April. Daughter, Veronica Williams says the family is “stoked”. “We feel really humbled by the awards because we don’t set out to win awards. We were so surprised and really stoked by it all. Our customers have done this for us and we thank them very much,”
Veronica says. “Our style is fresh and vibrant and we like to let the flowers speak for themselves.” Along with their valued customers of 20 years, clients of the contemporary style florist include Trinity Grammar and the Sydney Theatre Company. Over the years, Lucy’s Florist grew from a one-woman business to a family

A celebration barbecue, Steve Devine and some of his team at the Strathfield office.
Sport and business collided to drive Devine to the top We’ve heard it all before about used car salesmen, door-to-door telephone and energy sales and real estate agents, but the tide has turned for property professionals in this technological age, requiring specialised skills by trained agents, whom you trust to look after your investment. Let’s face it, the biggest investment for most people is their home. Sydney property prices are among the highest in the world and according to Steve Devine, real estate is one of the most competitive industries that there is. Devine Real Estate manage 1500 properties through their Strathfield and Concord offices and have won the prestigious 2012 Inner West Local Business of the Year award along with Best Real Estate. Steve Devine is undeniably proud of the achievement and speaks of “the culture” surrounding his full-time team of thirty staff plus the casual and part-time employees. “There’s a lot of things we do differently here – some are small but it’s all a piece of the jigsaw puzzle that
goes towards having a culture that’s real and which embraces our clients,” Steve said. “We have standards such as zero tolerance on rent arrears. It’s also the processes and systems put in place by our Operations Manager Andrew Taylor, which first and foremost make our staff ’s job so much easier. These processes translate to our clients earning more rent, having quality tenants and results in a vacancy rate – across 1500 properties - of being less the 0.3%.” The main office on The Boulevarde in Strathfield is a bespoke three-storey building that exudes confidence and success, and has an energy that resonates harmony and team-work, which is a remarkable achievement given that the nature of a sales team is singularly competitive. “The success of our sales team as a whole is greater than the individual success of an individual. Training underpins our entire success and is what we have built our business upon. That’s why we are so happy,” Steve explained.
The Eureka moments for Steve Devine came when he heard Olympic Swim coach Bill Sweetenham explain how the Australian swim team was genuinely moulded as a team even though the athletes mostly compete as individuals. The self confessed Rugby tragic then read Rod McQueen’s biography and that’s when sport and business collided. “I could relate my business to Rod McQueen’s book, particularly in building a team and surrounding myself with people who have expertise and then trusting that expertise. One of the pillars of our success is spending a lot of time with internal and external training. Business has changes, as sport has. The skill set now in sport and business is better now than it was 15 years ago.” “If we were doing what we did five or ten years ago, we would have been surpassed by our competitors. Devine Real Estate, as a business, has to be constantly moving and the fundamentals, like sport are integrity, ethics and hard work. What will change is the technology platform.”

Winning look for your home A new take on tradition by Belinda Noonan
Finding a style for your home that reflects your personality and not that of a large chain store is easier after a visit to the award winning Voilà Maison in Concord. For the second year running, Voilà Maison has won Best Home Furnishing Store and if ever a shop reflected its owner for elegance and style, then Vanja Pavasovic and her Voilà Maison are the perfect example. Once inside, a sense of calm prevails. This has to be one of my favourite shops in the inner west and I’m happy to sit there and relax, taking in the ambience and neutral tones, which are interspersed with beautiful pieces that are affordable and where anyone will feel comfortable. Labelled French provincial or French living, there’s much more to Voilà Maison than the notion of olde world charm. “It’s not all about Louis XV because nowadays it’s a style you can fit with your other furniture and our modern lives,” says Vanja. “We try to stick to neutral colours that fit into everyone’s home. That way it’s easy to add popular colours
or trends with a few little extra pieces.” “It’s not about following trends every season but there are a few tips for creating a modern look with decorations. I would suggest in the bedroom for example, going for a good quality, neutral bed-head with neutral bedside tables and lamps and then adding decorative silver or bling, a jewellery box or adding trendy colour pieces, which can easily be changed,” Vanja advises. “Creating an enduring, classical look is easier than you might think. It’s surprising how a French provincial style chair or lamp can suit a contemporary, modern décor.” Voilà Maison stocks imported lamp bases and shades, which can be sold separately. Contemporary, classical and dainty chandeliers, home-wares for indoors and outside, French provincial furniture, cushions, jewellery and more. To celebrate their second consecutive win, lamps are still 15% off for a limited time. The store is located at 70 Burwood Road, Concord and open seven days. Monday to Friday 10am until 5.30pm, 10am until 4pm on Saturday and 11am until 4pm on Sunday.
When Aaron Mi arrived in Australia, he didn’t know how to cook. The only son of Chinese parents was, by his own admission, “very spoilt”. Suddenly, the student was not only in a new country, but also in a situation where he had to fend for himself. “I called my mum and asked her how to cook fried rice,” he recalls now with a certain sense of irony. It all seems a long time ago for the managing director of the popular Ashfield restaurant, Taste of Shanghai, which also operates in World Square in the city, Eastwood and as the up-market Shanghai Stories 1938 in Chatswood. Working as a butcher in Ashfield, Mr Mi began to think what people would do if they were eating meals made with the meat he was selling. He was a keen restaurant goer who loved eating out, and six years ago, decided to experiment.

The result was Taste of Shanghai in Ashfield and all the rest is history. Taste of Shangai’s reputation has been firmly cemented after winning the Restaurant category in this year’s Inner West Local Business Awards. Mr Mi attributes his success to the diverse offerings on his menu. “Taste of Shanghai keeps the traditional food and offers new, modern food too,” he explains. “Chinese restaurants have a filthy, dirty image and I wanted to make a nice, clean impression. If you offer nice food, people keep coming back.” The Strathfield businessman’s personal favourite is shredded pork with pancake. “It’s our signature dish,” he adds. Mr Mi is pleased with what he has achieved, and so too are his parents. “They think it’s unbelievable. Twenty years ago, I couldn’t cook. Now I’ve got four restaurants.”

wound down in Sydney, Nho (Remembering) is off on another journey, this time to Moree where it will be exhibited as part of the local ArtExpress. “It’s been a dream come true, said Cecile who, after finishing her HSC has embarked on a double-degree in engineering
and architecture at the University of Sydney. She continues to explore and express herself through art, and enjoys the creativity that her architecture degree allows. “In architecture, we draw a lot, and although it’s technical you can be quite expressive too, she said. “I’ve been learning a lot about
other mediums to use and have been working on sculpting and modelling as well. Cecile is unsure what she will do with Nho (Remembering), which is still for sale. “I’ve had offers to sell it, but I’ve also become really attached to it, she said. “I haven’t decided whether to just keep one, or totally depart from it.
Santa Sabina students from Kindergarten to Year 12 have welcomed three Aboriginal visitors to the College for a day of art-making, story-telling and friendship in preparation for National Reconciliation Week. Indigenous Australians Maureen, Jean and Jungala joined students on each campus for a special assembly, at which they spoke. The guests were ‘clapped in’ using clap sticks created by the students on their annual visit to Central Australia. At the end of the assembly the students, all wearing red, black
and yellow ribbon pins made by the student Justice Leaders each placed a pebble in a large bowl of water, symbolising the ripple effect: like a drop in the ocean, there may be little impact by itself, but if we all come together, we can bridge the gap and make a difference. During the day Maureen and Jean painted four dot paintings of dreamtime stories, much to the delight of the staff and students who gathered around them. “During National Reconciliation Week we celebrate the rich culture and history of the
First Australians, said College Principal, Kate Clancy. “We seek to raise awareness in our students of the importance of building positive and respectful relationships so that together we can work together to close the gap and achieve a shared sense of fairness and justice. Our Social Justice programs inspire and enrich our students with new understandings of themselves and of Aboriginal people. We seek for the hearts and minds of our students to be committed to Reconciliation.

Cyber bullying is the new epidemic sweeping schools around the world, but two Year 10 students from Bethlehem College Ashfield are determined to change it when they join in the Australian Government’s Cybersafety Summit next month. On 12 June, Bethlehem’s Claudia Maroun and Vivienne Nikas will join other students and participate in a series of workshops, along with contributing to the development of government cybersafety programs and initiatives. The selection process for the event has been rigorous. Vivienne, Claudia and 15 other students from the College and 3,000 other applicants from across Australia began by joining the Youth Advisory Group on Cybersafety. They were encouraged to go online and blog their thoughts and ideas on cybersafety along with Senator Conroy who is trying to develop a government cybersafety policy. Vivienne and Claudia were then invited to submit expressions of interest in the Cybersafety Summit. From

here, 75 students were chosen to attend the summit with a parent and a teacher from the school. Like most students her age, Claudia is all too aware of cyber bullying. “I hear stories of victims of cyber bullying and my heart aches for something to change, she said. “Not only do I want to step out and talk about this issue, but I want something to be done.

Vivienne also hopes for a solution to the complex problem. “It feels like society and especially teenagers in general need to have their self- esteem boosted, she said. “It’s going to be a rough time in the mean while but I am so passionate and sure about this issue being resolved and now we have the chance to help make a difference.
Dodgy tutors Parents and carers are being reminded to be careful when choosing tutors and tutoring services for students. Fair Trading Minister Anthony Roberts and the Australian Tutoring Association (ATA) say there is a need for vigilance when people are looking to hire the services of a tutor or tutoring company. ATA CEO Mohan Dhall says although self-regulation of the industry is increasingly effective, one area where vigilance is required is businesses offering or promoting their tuition online. “Consumers need to check the claims made on websites very carefully. The ATA has had a number of complaints from consumers alleging that online tutor matching agencies do not always properly vet their tutors and that anyone can list with such services, he said. “We encourage parents to take appropriate steps to verify claims made by tutors on these sites. Minister Roberts said consumers should lodge a complaint with Fair Trading if they encounter any difficulties with tutors or tutoring businesses.

Straight to the point comedian by Mitchell Jordan
Funny man, Joe Avati
Former Burwood boy-turned-comedian Joe Avati has a message for worrywarts all over Sydney: his new show, Comicus Erectus, is G-rated. The stand-up show, featuring fellow
comedians George Kapiniaris, Basile and Tahir offers a fresh new take on “wog” humour that – Joe Avati is proud to claim – will appeal to all ages. “The show isn’t what people think – it’s not dirty,” he asserted. “It’s a return to the old way of doing stand-up comedy.” According to Mr Avati, Comicus Erectus was borne out of a need to show how ethnic comedy has evolved beyond the fluffy dice and Monaros stereotypes. “It’s a tongue-in-cheek way of saying that we’re here to stay,” he said. He particularly enjoys the instant satisfaction and feedback that comedy allows. “You know every 20 seconds how you’re going – it’s an immediate reaction,” Mr Avati said. “I love making people laugh.” Growing up in Burwood as the son of Italian parents, Joe completed his schooling at Trinity Grammar, Strathfield and after living in various cities around the world, recently settled in Melbourne. When he was young, he wanted to be a rock star. That dream may not have come to fruition, though Mr Avati is happy to settle for second-best. “I didn’t have the voice for it [rock],” he said. “Now, I get to sing in the show. That’s as close as I’ll be to a rock star.” Comicus Erectus comes to Burwood on Friday 13 July at Burwood RSL.
More Men’s Sheds on the way Men’s Sheds are set to double across NSW following an announcement on May 15 at the Strathfield Men’s Shed in Pomeroy Street at Homebush that the NSW Government would free-up access to crown-owned facilities. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the Deputy Premier, Andrew Stoner and Ted Donnelly from the Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA) to provide a framework for acting on requests from AMSA to establish men’s sheds on Crown land administered by the NSW Department of Primary Industries. “One of the big problems has been getting a site,” Mr Donnelly said. “This MOU will be really helpful and I thank the NSW Government.” General manager for Crown Lands, Graham Harding said the historic agreement would mean a faster resolution. “The MOU will fast track negotiations and help to facilitate more sites in places such as showgrounds and reserves, where there are already buildings or the opportunity to build,” Mr Harding advised. Since its inception in 2007, there are 200 men’s sheds in NSW and over 750 across Australia. Currently 33 are on NSW Crown land. Many, such as the Strathfield shed, are on council land. “Men’s Sheds are good for blokes,” declared Mr Stoner. “They provide a

New lease of life for St Thomas’ To celebrate the successful completion of a number of building projects, the Anglican Parish of Enfield, St Thomas’, is holding a service of thanksgiving on Sunday 10 June. Rev. Syd Clay, the rector of Enfield, encouraged curious locals to come along. “If readers have been curious about the work they have seen going on around the parish, particularly at St Thomas church on the corner of Coronation Parade and King Street in Enfield, they are invited to come along and join with us,” he said. The replacement of the prominent spire on the church – damaged by both birds in 2008 and subsequently discovered wood
rot, the restoration of the historic 1908 organ as well as the refurbishment of the church hall and former school building have meant that the site has seen plenty of building activity over the last three years. Other projects have included the building of a duplex residence next to the existing rectory in Coronation Parade and refurbished toilets at the branch church St John’s in Newton Road Strathfield West. Bishop Robert Forsyth, the Anglican Bishop of South Sydney and a regular commentator on ABC Radio, will be the principal speaker, and the service will be followed by a light luncheon in the newly renovated hall.

Battle lines are drawn as council take legal action against the ACU ›› Continued from page 3 Cardinal Pell, ACU Chancellor General (Rtd) Peter Cosgrove, Minister for Planning Brad Hazzard and Premier O’Farrell. In a statement issued after the meeting with residents Cr Paul Barron said that, “We have given the university a chance and asked to bring its student numbers back to the allowed level. They have been very uncooperative so we need to take action. An institution cannot keep pushing the boundaries to the detriment of the local community without assuming consequences. It’s time to seek justice for our residents.”
The current development consent provided to the ACU restricts on-site numbers for the main campus to be no more than 510 students during the day and 247 during the night time. As for the Edward Clancy campus, student numbers shall not exceed a maximum of 240 students at any given time. As a first step in the legal proceedings, Council is requesting access to the university’s files under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act. To see Cr. Outrage over the controversial Australian Catholic University expansion dominated much of Minister for Planning and Infrastructure, Brad Hazzard’s visit to the Strathfield Chamber of Commerce. Pre-empting what was to come from some attendees, Mr Hazzard acknowledged in his speech that the ACU extension is a “big issue” within the local area. “The ACU is caught in a ‘tail’ of the Part 3As left to us as a legacy of the former Labor government,” he said. As is to be expected, there AND DINE were more than a few swipes taken at the Labor party, but before Mr Hazzard could get too complacent, he heard first-hand just how frustrated some residents are over certain developments. Strathfield resident, Jane Pistolese who has led a long and tireless campaign to raise awareness of the full extent of the ACU issue took the chance to ask Mr Hazzard for a public hearing on the matter. “The Oasis in the inner-west is going to be lost,” she said. “Please, I’m imploring you, we need you to have a public hearing.” Mrs Pistolese’s passionate address received a round of

Another resident, Mr Steve Devine, asked why the future of the ACU development could not be decided by the local community. Mr Hazzard said that he “was not in a position to comment” on what forms of consultation the ACU had undertaken, but admitted that there should be “maximum community consultation.” “I encourage the ACU to engage with the community,” he said. In typical politician style, Mr Hazzard would not commit to anything on the spot, but admitted that a meeting could be more beneficial than a hearing. “I think a meeting will make more THE FRIENDLY PLACE TO SHOP AND DINE sense,” he said. “No guarantees, but I’ll look at it.” Flemington police were conducting search of his car and canvassed The NSW Department of early morning patrols in Strathfield the area, locating mail with credit Planning and Infrastructure on 16 May due to the spike in mail cards belonging to the residents will be holding drop-in sessions thefts and break enters in the area of the unit complex, a generic key across Sydney to hear from local when police observed a man at which opened the letter boxes, residents on how they think the front of a unit complex along and a screw driver. A walk through the wardrobe... andbeyond
This child-at-heart has a confession to make. Every time I open my built-in wardrobe I don’t hope to find a Canali suit or, for that matter, anything that I can wear. No, I’d trade even the most comfortable of clothing to catch sight of that famous lamppost in the wintery world of Narnia. It took more than 20 years, but now I can finally tick off that box. So too can anyone who visits the Powerhouse Museum where The Chronicles of Narnia: The Exhibition is showing until 26 August. Any true Narnia lover will find this in itself enough of a reason to visit the exhibition, which follows the recent success of the Harry Potter exhibition, both of which were based on the films, not the books. It’s common knowledge, of course, that the Narnia films have been nowhere near as popular as the books. I could list a million reasons why: the White Witch should not have blonde hair; Reepicheep was never that annoying … but for all their faults, there are many aspects of the films
by Mitchell Jordan
that are faithful to CS Lewis’ work. In many ways, the same can be said of this exhibition. Once the elation of reaching the lamppost subsided, I felt a little flat upon the realisation that I was standing in a room nowhere near as big as I thought it would be and, on close inspection, without an Aslan to be seen. Though three films have been made of the chronicles so far, the exhibition only shows costumes, props and set dressings from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian. The biggest draws are the chance to sit on the White Witch’s throne, getting to touch a frozen waterfall which was the result of her never-ending winter and firing a catapult. But is this enough to keep younger children entertained? Film lovers will particularly enjoy being able to inspect King Miraz’s armour and the White Witch’s crown, while fans of the books can read a hand-written letter from Lewis himself, along with seeing his pipe and mug.
Bursary a boon for Bruce
Bruce Blackshaw can now continue his studies.
Bruce Blackshaw from Croydon Park has been awarded a Further Education Bursary by Vision Australia to assist him with study and pursue a new career, following the loss of his eyesight. Bruce has non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy, an acute optic nerve disorder. In 2010 he experienced bleeding behind his eyeball. This damaged the blood supply to his optic nerve and resulted in dramatic, overnight vision loss. The Vision Australia Further
Education Bursary supplied Bruce with a scanner running Kurzweil OCR software, a Senseview portable electronic magnifier and Windows 7 and Microsoft Office to use with his own computer. “The scanner and software are sensational. What I can do now is really great,” Bruce said. “When I have to read for uni the software converts PDF to word file and reads it. I can also format it into three columns so to read it on the screen and not get seasick.”

A bear turned to stone by the White Witch of Narnia.
The exhibition also does a good job at incorporating information on other important issues, such as climate change. Overall, though, what’s on display is too sparse to
be a hit and too much of a mixed bag to appeal to everyone. But until my built-in cooperates, it’s still the best way of reaching Narnia.
Councillor’s crusade to keep business in Canada Bay Abbotsford councillor Michael Megna is no stranger to politics and this September he’s hoping to take on the role of Canada Bay Mayor. Mr Megna, who was first elected onto Drummoyne Council in 1987 will head the Liberal party’s ticket in the upcoming Canada Bay elections this September, and will also be the Liberal candidate for the separate popularly elected Mayoral ballot to be held at the same time. He will be joined by Cr Helen McCaffrey, Cr Mirjana Cestar, Dr Tanveer Ahmed and Mrs Georgia Wright. Mr Megna said that his decision to run for mayor came from feedback he had received from residents who want change. “The public need an alternative at the moment,” he said. “The current mayor [Angelo Tsirekas] has been here for 10 years and a lot of people are telling me not a lot of things have happened.” According to Mr Megna, not enough money has been spent on critical areas such as footpaths,
shopping centres, and roads. “We have three major shopping centres in the area: Drummoyne, Five Dock and Concord and they are all very tired,” he said. “The strips and the type of shops we have there both need sprucing up. We need to encourage more diversity, otherwise shoppers will keep on going to Burwood.” He highlighted the transformation of the Burwood Road shopping area as a major success for the area. “All councils should take a leaf out of Burwood strip’s book,” he added. Mr Megna, a tax agent who runs an accounting business in Five Dock, attributes his long run in politics to an enjoyment in community interaction. “Even when I was off council, people kept coming to me, which is why I went back on again,” he said. “As mayor, I feel I’d be in a better position to get things done than by just being a councillor. I’ve been a mayor before: I won’t have L or P-plates on.”

More than 120 Rotary and community members celebrated the 2012 Pride of Workmanship Awards for exemplary workplace contributions this month. Burwood Mayor, Cr John Faker and Burwood Rotary Club President, Tim O’Connor presented awards to enthusiastic volunteers and staff of Burwood Community Welfare, Meals on Wheels, Burwood Public School Parents & Citizens, Eurella Community Services, Burwood Police, St Vincent’s Hospital, Abel Tasman Village, and St Spyridon College. The event, held at Burwood RSL, raised $800 for Rotary’s

Mr O’Connor said that Rotary was proud to recognise the significant workplace contributions, positive and constructive attitude to employment, and quality of service. “Notwit hst anding t he impressive diversity of these organisations, the qualities of generous work, selfless dedication, professionalism and commitment to improving the community characterise all tonight’s awardees,” he said. “Importantly, these awards are based on recommendations from the awardees’ workplace peers.”

For most of us, parking fines are no laughing matter. But for Drummoyne comedian Amelia Ryan, it’s proved to be the right material for her one-woman comedy and cabaret show, Storm in a D Cup, a show that has proved so funny that it’s earned her a place in this year’s Springboard mentorship program. Touching on everything from growing up with a gay father, through to her time as an exotic dancer, the show caught the attention of the Sydney Fringe, whose Springboard mentorship program provides professional
development and practical advice to young emerging artists in Sydney. Artists will have the opportunity to develop and refine their craft over a period of four months leading up to the fringe festival in Edinburgh this September. Ms Ryan said she was “absolutely thrilled” to be embarking on the Springboard mentorship program. “It’s such a great initiative for the Sydney Fringe and I feel quite honoured to have been selected,” she said. “I can’t wait to absorb the information and inspiration.”

Hope is back on the menu Two inner west kitchens are going into a Moroccan frenzy to raise money for the homeless. As part of Hopemonth, a non-profit initiative running from the 1st until the 31st May 2012, Drummoyne mum Kate Sowden and her friends hosted a meal on 18 May to raise funds for struggling families and those who are homeless. Kate, a mother of two who teaches music to toddlers and preschoolers, and created Hopemonth, said she was compelled to do something after meeting with a friend who works with the homeless in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. “I think unless you have worked around Woolloomooloo or been there then it’s an area that’s easy to miss and not to even put your eyes on this issue,” she explained. 30 people attended at a cost of $30 each, resulting in a final figure of $900. For their money, they got a Moroccan-themed dinner topped off with a pomegranate and pine nut chocolate mousse cake. Now, it’s Burwood volunteer Gemma Macri’s turn to get cooking. Unable to hold a dinner in May, she’s having one on 16 June. “I wanted to do Hopemonth because you see a lot of poverty, as well as people coming in from impoverished backgrounds and I think it’s great to create community around food and raise awareness.” Gemma is willing to open up the invitation to Burwood Scene readers, too. The cost is $30 and Gemma can be contacted on macri.gemma@gmail.com
