T’S A SURE sign you’re getting older when names like Minions and Despicables mean very little, until you find out these ‘creatures’ are cartoon film star blockbusters and the latest big thing in toyland. Once upon a time (in a land far, far away), cartoon characters took human or animal form and had proper names like Fred, Wilma, Mickey or Minnie or had safe, descriptive names – Road Runner, Astro Boy, Tweety Bird. All easily understood.

A FUN-FILLED FESTIVAL DAY
BURWOOD Now we have shapes, either blobs or rectangles, which take on emotion and characteristics and which can enthrall youngsters. So it comes to pass that Burwood Scene is proudly running a Despicable front page in keeping with our lofty status
as an official media partner for the 2013 Burwood Festival. Any parent with young children will know a Minion at first glance. Apparently these pesky creatures have even been spotted in outer space, but for those
who don’t know, here’s a short run down from DESPICABLEwiki. “They are impulsive creatures with little self-control, but with a wide-eyed wonder and odd innocence that endears them to viewers and makes them relatable.” They wear metal goggles for however many eyes they have, blue overalls with Gru’s emblem on the front, and black gloves. Better still, they can turn into a glowstick and can survive without oxygen, hence the ability to tour outer space on occasions. Don’t expect a
conversation because 10,000 Minions, a good-sized Minions ‘jabber’ in a mixture delegation will be visiting of English, Japanese, Korean Burwood Festival on Sunday, and Filipino but do September 22. First Liberal MP for Reid CRAIG LAUNDY is the first Liberal Member for Reid after John Murphy conceded defeat on Tuesday, 10 September after a very tight race that came down to a narrow margin of 639 votes before postals were counted.
Mr Murphy , who held Reid and Lowe for 15 years, called Mr Laundy to offer his congratulations on Tuesday, September 10. “John called to say he was in a position he couldn’t overcome and congratulated my family and I on our campaign. He also wished me every success in representing the people of Reid,” Craig Laundy told Burwood Scene. “I’d like to thank John Murphy for serving the community for fifteen years. He’s a good man with a good heart and he’s been

I start work tomorrow. For the minority I will also work for over the next three years, to earn their trust and support. On election night, as the results

started coming in, Mr Laundy spoke to the 300 strong crowd thanking them for support. “It’s been one helluva journey,” Laundy said on election night. “I would like to thank you all so so much.” He reserved special thanks for his wife Suzie, three children, Charlie, Sophie and Annalise and his parents. “I have been a nightmare for Photo: 18 months and Xrytryryrytry all through the campaign, Suzie has360 been my glue and our children have supported me all the way. AUSTRALIAN businesses are spending more than $2.2 billion each year on waste services, of which $1.4 billion is spent on waste to landfill. Information from Planet Ark says that approximately 12.5 million tonnes of commercial and industrial waste is generated each year, which is equivalent to 543kg for each Australian. Of that, almost 7 million tonnes is sent to landfill, equating to an average C&I recycling rate of 46% across the country. “As waste disposal costs increase, it makes financial sense to look for recycling options for the wide range of waste materials generated by businesses,” says Janet
Sparrow, Recycling Programs Manager at Planet Ark. Counteracting the large amount of waste and its associated costs to businesses and the environment is a key aim behind Planet Ark Environmental Foundation’s BusinessRecycling.com.au. It’s a free online directory with 6,676 listings of re-use, recycling, collection and drop-off locations and services across the country for more than 90 different materials, plus a hotline for Australian businesses to find local recycling services. In the inner west, the top five most commonly searched materials on their website includes computers and accessories, batteries of
all types, cardboard cartons, office paper and office furniture. By Local Government Area the top searches are: Ashfield LGA: computers and accessories, paper, batteries, cardboard and mattresses Canada Bay LGA: mattresses, aluminium cans, cardboard cartons, clothes and office furniture Strathfield LGA: computers and accessories, batteries, cardboard cartons, office furniture and fluorescent globes Burwood LGA: cardboard cartons, office furniture, office paper, mattresses and video and audio tapes.

WORKING WITH OUR COMMUNITY
T
here are only a few days to go until the Burwood Festival, and Council is working hard to ensure that this free annual event will be a memorable experience for all families. My family and I are looking forward to seeing you at this great event, there’s an array of free entertainment for all ages to enjoy. The Festival is not only a celebration of spring but it is also one of many free civic events Council offers our community throughout the year. I believe that hosting civic events such as the Festival is important, as they help bring people from diverse backgrounds together to celebrate what makes our
area a proud place to live.
From hosting celebrations, to working with local organisations, schools and business, Council is proud to support our community. Last Saturday I had the privilege to volunteer at the Santa Sabina School Fete. It was great to be able to help out and support one of our many great local schools. On a final note, I would like to thank John Murphy for his service to the area over the past years. I would also like to congratulate Craig Laundy and Tony Burke who were elected as Federal Members for our area. I look forward to working with both them.

Maria Vecchio (centre), husband Frank, family and staff from Inspirations at Burwood.
WHEN Maria Vecchio fell pregnant with her third child two and a half years ago, she thought her life was perfect. The wife of businessman Frank Vecchio, who runs Inspirations Paint in Burwood, had always wanted three children and was so happy that she brushed off the discovery of a lump on her left breast as a blocked milk duct. “I was 36 years old at the time and felt indestructible: nothing could happen to me,” she recalled. At her husband’s insistence, Maria went to see a doctor at Strathfield Private Hospital. She did not need the doctor to say a word to know that the verdict was bad news. “Just from seeing the look on the doctor’s face I knew something was wrong,” Maria said. “When I got the results and was diagnosed with breast cancer my world came shattering down.” Only weeks away from her child’s birth, the tail end of Maria’s pregnancy became a living nightmare. “I couldn’t do anything or have any testing because of the baby. They were the longest weeks of my life,” she said. The good news was that Maria

and Frank’s son, Gianluca, was “born perfect”, but the joys of motherhood were once again brought into stark confrontation for Maria who had the lump removed four days after giving birth. “I couldn’t nurse Gianluca because of what was happening,” Maria added. “Going in for the operation was overwhelming.” Chemotherapy meant that Maria lost all of her hair, but the hardest thing was telling her two children what was happening to their mum. Maria and her family were relieved to discover that the Stage 3 cancer had not spread further than her left breast, though tragedy went on to strike twice when Maria’s 73-year-old mother-in-law was later diagnosed with breast cancer herself. Determined to stay positive, Maria has decided to start, PinkSpiration, a series of events to raise both money for, and awareness of, breast cancer throughout October. “Breast cancer is something that doesn’t discriminate,” she said. “It can happen at any time
Talking fashion business THE Devil Wears Prada stereotype can stand aside when we are talking fashion business with the influential Donna Player, who is the David Jones Group Executive for Merchandise. Ms Player will be the next special guest dinner speaker at the growing Business Professional Women’s Strathfield (BPW) meeting on Wednesday, October 16 at Club Burwood. It’s a night not to be missed if you are interested in fashion and how the business of fashion is managed throughout the iconic David Jones stores. Following her role as Merchandise and Planning General Manager at BIG W, Ms Player joined DJ’s in May 2012 with Chief Executive Paul Zahra saying he was “delighted” to have Donna on the Executive Committee. “Her skill and track record in price negotiations with suppliers, dealing with deflationar y pressures and the integration of merchandise systems and processes to support Omni Channel Retailing are an important component of ensuring our management
and when it does it knocks you for six.” On 18 October, Maria is holding a poker tournament at Briars at Greenlees Sporting Club in Concord. Raffles are being held at Inspirations Paint stores in both Burwood Heights and Gladesville, along with a ladies’ night and barbeques throughout the area. Looking back on the experience years ago, Maria still feels emotional, though she also points out that her son, Gianluca, was a gift in more than one way. “His name means ‘God is gracious’, which in my case he was, because if it wasn’t for my child I wouldn’t have picked up on the lump,” she said. “I never thought I’d get through the dark period but I’ve got the rest of my life to go.” To g e t i nv o l v e d i n PinkSpiration, email Maria at dumaster@bigpond.net.au.

Magic and wizardry to delight and confound ENJOY a pinch of the impossible these school holidays when ‘The Magic Show’ takes centre stage with internationally renowned conjuror Elio Simonetti bringing his action-packed show to Ashfield Mall. He first became intrigued with the world of legerdemain at just ten years-old. “I used to wash cars for pocket money and I was asked to wash caravans that belonged to a circus,” Elio recalled. It wasn’t the flying trapeze or tight rope walker that impressed. It was the conjuror. “I thought his act was the most marvellous thing I’d ever seen. So I decided right then to become a magician.” His wizardry appeals equally to children and grown-ups. “Adults are genuinely intrigued by the illusions while children love the antics and colour.” You can catch his sorcery at Ashfield Mall from Monday 23 to Friday 27, September at 11am and 1pm daily. Admission Magician and conjuror Elio Simonetti at Ashfield Mall these school holdidays. is free.
Ashfield LEP one step closer to approval THE BLUE PRINT for Ashfield’s economic development and sustainability is likely to be approved NSW Planning Minister Brad Hazard told Ashfield Council representatives at a meeting last Thursday. Cr Mansour said the 2013 LEP plan aims to achieve 2,000 new dwellings and 500 new jobs by 2031. “Today’s meeting was a positive one, and Minister Hazard was very encouraging of our plan for the future of our local area,” Mayor Morris Mansour said of the Ashfield Draft LEP. “Ashfield Councillors and staff have worked closely with the community for over five years to develop this bold plan, and I am pleased we can expect its approval within weeks.”
Strathfield MP Charles Casuscelli also attended the meeting. “It’s good to see that Ashfield Council is at long last starting to listen to the community on planning matters,” Mr Casuscelli said. Mr Casuscelli expressed relief that, following regular calls for a Masterplan for the commercial centre of Ashfield, the Council has announced it will be taking action. “Council would do well to listen to the many local business owners and potential investors who have complained about a lack of vision concerning the future of Ashfield’s commercial centre. I urge Council to shed its anti-development reputation by being bold, not only in words but also in deeds, when considering the future of Ashfield,” Mr Casuscelli said.
Ashfield GM Vanessa Chan, said the key community objectives for the LEP is the protection of the unique character and heritage of each of Ashfield Council’s suburbs. “The development of this LEP saw a level of community consultation unmet anywhere in New South Wales,” Ms Chan said. “It began in 2011 with Ashfield’s Biggest Conversation and also involved open houses, heritage advisors, an interactive website and thorough engagement with Planning NSW.” “Our Plan for Ashfield’s future is about striking the balance between keeping the unique heritage aspects of our distinct neighbourhoods and driving economic growth through good planning,” Mayor Mansour added.

The children are encouraged to discuss important events in their lives, and larger community celebrations such as Chinese New Year, Easter and Christmas, which are celebrated in a way that is very relevant to the children. All the families who have attended the pre-school over the last 30 years are invited to join current and past teachers for an afternoon of fun and chance to catch up with families they have not seen for a while. There will be a disco for the children plus gelato, and cake to celebrate the event.

Over the course of two weeks, Mr Divola offered insights into his own journey as a writer, both the highs and lows of work as a journalist and author including the process of writing and views on the publishing world.
Through the Writer in Residence program students were engaged in their own writing practice, including gaining creative inspiration, researching the imaginary character, developing story lines and changing literary perspectives. Domremy students from year 7 to 12 were able to utilise the Writer in Residence Program to explore their individual creativity, unique imaginations
and to embrace the opportunity to write creatively for pleasure. Principal, Vivienne Awad said that the Writer in Residence Program is about connecting students’ learning with the real world. “Writing becomes more engaging for our students when you provide them with an opportunity to work with an expert who writes for a living, she said.

Master chefs in the making at Meriden HOSPITALITY students at Meriden can cook up a storm now they have their own state-of-the-art commercial kitchen. The kitchen was officially opened last month by cooking doyenne, Pamela Clark, who is the editorial and food director of the Australian Women’s Weekly cook books. The former student at Meriden shared her expertise with students, teachers and parents during a master class
to mark the opening of the new kitchen. Year 12 student, Chanel Scardilli, who is studying Hospitality for her HSC this year said that the new facility is outstanding. “As the kitchen has much of the equipment that you would find in a commercial kitchen, it gives us the chance to experience working in an environment similar to that in the industry,” she said. “It also allows for a more creative approach to the food
being produced as there are more possibilities. We are very excited about using the new equipment.” The new facility comprises a spacious kitchen, separate demonstration room, scullery with commercial dishwasher, and the latest digital technology. Demonstration cameras and suspended flat screen televisions are situated throughout the kitchen and demonstration room.

CHILDREN at Santa Sabina’s Early Education Centre transformed themselves into fairies and elves and gave a magical performance of Nutcracker Suite’s ‘Waltz of the Flowers’. Excited by the prospect of performing as fairies, the children wrote and drew the invitations and practised with enthusiasm, working collaboratively as a group to learn their actions and movements. In addition to performing the waltz the preschoolers also made their own storybooks, wrote letters to fairies, made fairy halos and drawings and created a fairy garden for which they chose different flora. According to director, Jackie Baxter, these activities at the Centre foster learning and development through “a stimulating, interest-based curriculum in which children are allowed to express themselves and are empowered to reach their potential.”

INNeR-WeSt streets are about to become safer for those taking a stroll after changes to rules for dog-owners. Councils are now allowed to require owners of menacing dogs to muzzle their dogs in public, have them on a leash, under the control of a person over 18 years old, and ensure they are de-sexed. Member for Drummoyne, John Sidoti MP, welcomed the changes. “Dog attacks are always terrifying and these new laws will help get dangerous dogs off the streets of Drummoyne and educate owners about the importance of keeping their dogs under control,’’ he said. “There are a lot of dangerous dogs which under the previous rules could not be classified as dangerous – this new rule will Dorothy Cowie School of Dancing mean that the community can students are on their way to L.A. be protected from dogs that are Twenty aspiring a threat, no matter whatyoung breed will also take part in skill fantastic opportunity for all of dancers they are.’’ from the Dorothy development workshops in our students to represent the Cowie the School new lawof isDancing part of ina Los Angles and New York, school as well as Australia on Croydon and Drummoyne package of measures announced accompanied by principal an international scale.” will be on their way Minister to USA Donna Burland. BURWOOD and France have become a little more connected following a Rotary exchange program. 16-year-old Emma Geneau from Wimereux in the north of France, near Belgium, is currently being hosted by the Rotary Club of Burwood. Since arriving in Australia in July she has commenced studies at Burwood Girls High School and is enjoying her time here in Sydney. The Rotary club of Burwood has a long history in Rotary Youth Exchange and currently has a student, Maddie Bardwell, on exchange in France. A Rotary Youth Exchange student spends a year living with host families and attending school in a country other than their own. They learn a new way of living, maybe even a new language, and a great deal about themselves. As they are learning, they also are teaching the people they meet about their country, Xrytryryrytry Photo: culture, and ideas, helping to bring the world closer together and making some good friends in the process. NEW parking facilities for cars and boat trailers have been installed as part of the Blaxland Road boat ramp facility upgrade near the John Whitton Bridge on the Parramatta River at Rhodes. Drummoyne MP John Sidoti said work started in March this year to build 14 car and boat trailer spaces to improve access to the river for local boaters. “Roads and Maritime Services provided $153,000 under the Better Boating Program (BBP) for the parking improvement at the recently upgraded boat ramp in an application by City of Canada Bay Council. “The work is part of a larger foreshore precinct upgrade being carried out by Canada Bay Council and connects with the new pedestrian and cycle link under the Meadowbank and John Whitton bridges from Mill Park to East Rhodes. “In the past five years, with help from five separate BBP grants, the City of Canada Bay Council has completed a significant upgrade of the Blaxland Road boat ramp precinct, he said. “The upgrade aims to provide safer, improved facilities for boaters and reduce future maintenance costs. In the past five years, RMS has awarded more than $2.13 million in BBP grants have been awarded in the Drummoyne electorate, John Sidoti said.
