COMMUNITY SPORTS CENTRE A CATA LYT IC T O O L FO R UR B A N TRANSFORMATION
01
Type: Public Recreational | Location: Korsten, Port Elizabeth | Year: 2020
The project began with a contextual analysis of Korsten, a township on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth, where residents, like those in many other townships, have been denied basic infrastructure and resources. The project was motivated by key issues discovered on the site. Among the youth, there is a high percentage of unemployment, a lack of resources, gangsterism, and alcohol abuse. In addition to that, t here are also a number of schools in the area which indicates a large influx of school-aged children who frequent the area.
There is a significant lack of recreational spaces in the community, so the goal of the design was to use sports and education as a vehicle of change by providing the community with the necessary recreational and educational facilities, which would ultimately change the narrative of the Korsten community.

building mass
Building Roof-scape
The design represents itself as a mass in the context that covers the entire site.
The main concept of the design, is
building as an extension of the recreational landscape.
Creating a canopy of activity to happen on the inside and outside of the building.
Public Forecourt
spatial organization
The strategy was to pull the building back in order to create a forecourt, that would include landscaping in order to improve interaction that the building has with pedestrians.
There are four main spaces that make up the design.
s p a t i a l
They organized by the means of their nature, from the most public spaces to the more specialized spaces.
s t r a t e g y
d i a g r a m
The spatial strategy in the building was developed around a central atrium that would serve as both the major movement circulation space and a space where people could experience the building and all of its activities. The atrium is intended to serve as an extension of the forecourt as public space, and this is accomplished by reducing the distinctions between inside and outside by using hard surfaces used on the exterior space of the building and using the natural landscape found in the forecourt area.
The various spaces of the building are organized according to hierarchical size and proximity. A privacy gradient is achieved through several thresholds. The ground floor is public space but there is clear distinction in the level of publicness. Recreational spaces are located further away from the main entrance, in the southern area of the building because they are less public and social spaces are located closer to the entrance (the front). While the private spaces in the building are located on the first floor.

THE WETLANDS LIFESTYLE ESTATE S u s ta in ab le and int er active living in the ur ba n e nv i r o nment
02
Type: Urban Design | Location: Summerstrand, Port Elizabeth | Year: 2020
The Nelson Mandela University Investment Company (NMUI), a fully owned subsidiary of the University, invited the fourth year (Hon.) class to compete in a Lifestyle Estate competition. The development’s goal was to establish and operate a facility that would generate revenue and income for NMUI, as well as to provide a facility for the continued training of students in NMU’s hospitality department. The main concept for the development was to build a sustainable and integrated living community that incorporates
environmental experiences in various forms and volumes. Through a contextual analysis and developing an understanding of existing conditions and potential connections on site, the idea was to create a primary central space that would be the main public space, integrating this with natural green system, and creating centers of meeting that would be characterized and edged by public spaces and buildings.

Type: Theatre | Location: Motherwell, Port Elizabeth | Year: 2019
This design was inspired by the idea of architectural storytelling in the African context. The location of the site is in Motherwell, a township located on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth. In this design, I sought to explore an appropriate architectural design that would tell the forgotten, rejected and suppressed narratives of Africa’s indigenous peoples as a result of the colonialism legacy. The intention of the design was to distinguish itself from colonial architecture by embracing the rich heritage of African cultures and beliefs which would result in an architectural intervention that
embraced Africa in all her splendor. The building as an extension of theatre and story-telling.

residences were constructed around the Kraal. The Theatre design makes use of curves in its shape to emphasize the organic sense of the design and is spatially designed around a central space, the grand foyer, which not only serves as a circulation space but also serves as a public gathering and meeting space within the design.
These settlements were organic in nature, constructed of natural materials and centered on a central space. The central space was made up of gathering and communal places, as well as ‘lesaka’ in seSotho, known as the Kraal, which housed the settlements livestock. The inhabitants’
