Mar in Nassau, the first of the region’s great destination resorts. Its roll-out to visitors over the course of 2017 and 2018 has led to many recognizing Bahamas as the natural treasure that it has always been. Featuring three hotel brands in one development (Grand Hyatt, SLS and Rosewood), a signature Jack Nicklaus golf course, the largest casino and convention centre in the Caribbean and world-class shopping and restaurants, the resort is actually a kind of paradise of all of its own. Paradise: Found While the group of hotels behind Baha Mar speaks for itself in terms of the luxury that the project brings, the scale of the ambition of the resort is also clear from several other statistics. Baha Mar is a leading employer in the Bahamas, employing over 4,000 people. Over the next few years, it is projected that it will contribute 12% of the Bahamas’ GDP.

“Since the opening of Baha Mar resorts, Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau, the Bahamas has reported the highest number of passenger arrivals in the last decade” Visitor numbers are also on the rise; an airlift to the destination has also increased substantially throughout the last year, as top airlines add additional direct flight markets, seat count and frequency of flights from the United States and Canada. Since the opening of Baha Mar resorts, Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau, the Bahamas has reported the highest number of passenger arrivals in the last decade. There’s also far more to Baha Mar than just being a popular destination resort, however.
The team behind its concept were more concerned with providing its guests with an experience than anything currently available in the area. By adding a cultural program to what it offers visitors, it has the added bonus of involving local communities. The resort destination is so much more than “Las Vegas at the beach”. Baha Mar is home to The Current, an unparalleled arts program, gallery and studio space, designed to support local artists and promote Bahamian arts on a global scale. Overseen by Bahamian

Artist John Cox, the arts program features 2,500 pieces of Bahamian art, showcased throughout the property. And even children are welcome at the resort - not always the case with luxury hotels. Baha Mar has developed a series of educational activities for kids, a marine science program (including an extensive coral restoration project), and the resort’s BEACH Sanctuary, a natural animal sanctuary for indigenous marine life.
A massive contribution to Bahamas life A part of the experience that Baha Mar creates for its guests is to educate them about the importance of wildlife and the environment in the area. It invests significant resources to this. With so many visitors expected to pass through the resort and its three hotels in the years ahead, it’s important that the whole hospitality cycle is as sustainable as possible.

Throughout 2017 and 2018, Baha Mar sponsored the National Men’s Basketball Team; Fourteen Clubs, the youth golf organization in Nassau, and The Valley Boys, one of the leading Junkanoo bands in The Bahamas. The Current at Baha Mar has evolved into Nassau’s leading arts and culture hub, sponsoring five Artists in Residence to create original works of art in the Baha Mar studios for guests to view and enjoy. And in addition to improving the guest experience, this has the added benefit of creating a new whole new market for the artists’ work that didn’t exist before Baha Mar.

An example of Baha Mar’s commitment to sustainability can be seen in its joining the Reef Rescue Network earlier this year, a network of organizations and businesses in the Bahamas committed to the creation and management of coral restoration. Baha Mar has received considerable support in maintaining this level of service from a range of partners and suppliers. Baha Mar is the largest hospitality project on the Bahamas and the largest of its kind in the Caribbean ever. The daily operations of the firm rely not just on Baha Mar’s valued team, comprised of everything from chefs to masseurs, but also on a band of local firms that bring their own expertise to proceedings.
The Future With its contributions to the local community, local artists and local NGOs, the impact Baha Mar is already making is quite remarkable. Baha Mar has achieved luxury and elegance while involving all sides of the community into its day-to-day operations, as employees, suppliers and contractors, and even of course, artists and entertainers. Little wonder that its rooms have been sold out - performing well above expectations. Baha Mar is projected to generate an additional 315,000 air passenger seats annually (new markets and larger planes from the existing markets), an increase of 19% over 2015 record of arrivals and signaling in the marketplace the revitalization of the Bahamas tourism brand. Thanks to the luxury brought by Baha Mar, life truly is spectacular.

thens International Airport (AIA) is a prime example of the difference that business excellence can make. In 2013, passenger numbers had fallen to a 10-year low as Greece suffered a post-financial crisis. Fast forward 5 years, AIA has witnessed a dynamic growth with all-time record in terms of Passenger number, Flights, Cargo traffic culminating with a strong Financial Performance. In 2018, AIA was named Southern Europe’s best airport in the Skytrax World Airport Awards, the largest annual global survey of air traveler satisfaction. At around the same time, it was recognized as second best in the world by AirHelp, a global aviation industry organization. Clearly, there’s something special going on at AIA, so we decided to take a closer look.
Background AIA was founded in 1996 as public-private partnerships with a 30-year concession. In a model which has been repeated numerous times since, AIA was the first Greenfield airport to use the public-private partnership form of financing. To this day, the government maintains its 55% share, with private partners holding the remaining 45%. In the 22 years since its foundation, AIA has gone from strength-to-strength. In 2018, it employs over 13,000 people and over 300

“In 2017, net profits reached 140 million euro, up from a little over 130 million the previous year. Operational revenues rose to 433 million in the same period” companies - a number which continues to grow, as we shall see. A 2013 study by the Athens University of Economics and Business showed that the airport contributed nearly 3% of the country’s GDP through direct and indirect channels. The good news for the Athens and Greek economies is that it looks very much like it will continue to make a stellar contribution to both. In 2017, net profits reached 140 million euro, up from a little over 130 million the previous year. Operational revenues rose to 433 million in the same period, primarily drive by ever-increasing passenger numbers and commercial activities within the AIA. By the same token, in 2017 AIA welcomed an unprecedented 21.7 million passengers through its terminals, exceeding the previous year’s total by a huge 1.7 million. On the basis of early figures, it looks like a new record for passenger numbers could be registered in 2018, with the expectation being double-digit growth for the year. One might recognize that airports, while not being the final destination, have a clear impact on the overall satisfaction with travel. Similarly, AIA is also excelling on travel satisfaction, receiving recognition from a number of high-profile organizations for its excellence. Much of this recognition has also been driven by passenger surveys.

Correspondingly, AIA was also recognized as best Airport in Southern Europe by ACI World. Furthermore the International Air Transport Association bestowed AIA with ‘gold status’ in its 2018 Fast Travel Awards. The gold status recognizes the highest possible standards in areas such as selfcheck-in, documents checks, flight rebooking, self-boarding and bag-recovery. Indeed, all of this has had a positive impact well beyond the AIA’s front door. For instance, according to GBR Consulting, 27 percent spike in international arrivals at AIA during the first quarter of 2018 has helped revenue per room at Athens hotels to grow by 14.6% year-on-year, due to increased occupancy levels and room rates. What’s good for AIA then, is good for Athens.

environment. It closely monitors environmental conditions on a regular basis in the airport and its hinterlands. This includes working closely with all stakeholders, raising awareness about the importance of sustainability and amongst other initiatives, participating in a global industry initiative led by the ACI aimed at managing greenhouse gas emissions by airport operators. AIA seeks to incorporate sustainability principles through its Environmental Management System (EMS), which has been certified according to ISO:14001 since 2000. It also requires all major third parties operating at the airport to certify their own EMS to the same quality standards, and/ or Eco-Management and Audit Schedule (EMAS) regulations. A recent initiative undertaken by the AIA shows its determination to go beyond just meeting standards and to exceed them. In 2018, for ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ day, launched a recycling competition for all of the 300 or so companies operating within the airport. In conjunction with the competition, AIA removed all single-use plastics from its own workplaces. AIA has also developed a comprehensive waste management system for managing all waste produced on the Airport premises based on “The Polluter Pays” principle. in Greece and subsequently joining other 25 airports in all of Europe. This was in large part due to the significant investments made in alternative energy (namely solar park) within the airport’s confines.
Technology Technology forms a central role at AIA. It recently joined forces with FLIO to enhance passengers’ digital experience at the airport. Thanks to this partnership, AIA passengers can use their smartphone to book parking, obtain airport information, receive discounts within the airport and most importantly, receive live flight information through the AIA/FLIO mobile application. Elsewhere, AIA has launched its own annual innovation contest, called the Digital Gate Airport Innovation Challenge, which seeks to recognize the best airport-related innovation in the market. This attracts contestants from both the academic and industry spheres, and as far as we are aware, is the only such airport-related innovation award of its kind in existence.

Partners Achieving excellence requires excellent partners. AIA has developed a world-class collection of service providers to help it continue on its journey of growth. These include G4S Secure Solutions S.A and ICTS for the provision of security services, and Triandros Constructions Ltd Athens AeroServices for repair and maintenance services and aircraft maintenance provider at the airport respectively. On the technical side, there’s also Redex S.A. for provision of power quality optimization system electrical equipment, Materna IPS, which aided AIA in the procurement, installation and maintenance of a new automated boarding pass control system, and last but not least, J/V Watt SA, which ensure that the waste generated by over 20 million visitors each year is sustainably managed. Equally, Proton S.A. has partnered with AIA to provide Liquid Explosives Detection System (LEDS)
The Future AIA’s success is a collective effort and one of never standing still. Key developments
of operational facilities for departures and arrivals, enhanced passport control for departing passengers, additional check-in and ticket counters, as well as new retail and food & beverage areas. This will surely be an asset going forward as its recent proposal to the Greek government about extending its commission by 20 years was enthusiastically accepted. It’s hardly surprising that the extension was granted. Under AIA management, the airport is excelling. Praise has come from as lofty a position as the IATA, who stated in 2018: “AIA strives to be at the forefront of the Industry by providing world-class services to its passengers. Let this be an example to other airports not just in Greece, but also for the rest of Europe.” Airlines have also sat up and taken notice. New routes in 2018 have already included several American Airlines, Ryanair, WizzAir and others. In 2019, the livery of Oman Air will be seen on a Greek runway for the first time, and others are in discussion. In short, Athens Airport is the epitome of excellence and everyone in the aviation industry is well aware of the fact.

reek ’s second biggest city Thessaloniki has an incredible cultural history going back thousands of years. Just like the more well-known Athens, its streets are full of beautiful ancient buildings, most notably the white tower, by now synonymous with the city’s beautiful seaport. But like Athens, and indeed, most of Greece, what goes on below ground is almost as much of interest as what happens at street level. That usually means archaeologists excavating below street level, seeing what artefacts that the city’s seemingly neverending history throws up next. But since 2006, there’s been a different kind of

support, it never got much further than a large hole in the city centre - a daily reminder to the city’s people that they had yet to get their metro. In the early 2000s, with full government and EU support, the project was reopened. A public-private partnership (PPP) between the greek government and Attiko, and a combination of funding from the European Investment Bank and the European Regional Development Fund gave the financial boost required to make the metro a reality. The Scope of the Project, is the design, construction, supply and installation of the equipment, including Rolling Stock, commissioning, maintenance of the network,
“A combination of funding from the European Investment Bank and the European Regional Development Fund gave the financial boost required to make the metro a reality” excavation going on: that of the Thessaloniki Metro. We recently took a closer look at the project to see how it was progressing.
From Concept to Reality Home to over 300,000 people, Thessaloniki’s residents must feel that a metro in the city is well deserved. Europe alone has over 50 metro systems, with smaller cities like Rennes, Brescia and Catania possessing their own subways. It turns out that the creation of a metro has been the burning issue on the city’s agenda for just over 100 years. Mayor Sotiris Kouvelas published a development plan for a metro in Thessaloniki 30 years ago this year in 1988. The plan was visionary and much of its central tenets remain true to the more modern version of the metro. However, without central government
supply of the required spare parts, as well as the training of the personnel of Thessaloniki Metro. This network comprises of an underground line of two separated tracks, approximately 14,4 Km long, 18 central platform stations with their shafts, 2 forestations, 2 trumpets, 7 crossovers and one Depot with the Operation Control Center and the Administration Building, as well as all necessary electromechanical and Railway Systems, including the Rolling Stock. When finished in 2020, the first line, (the so-called ‘base line’) will traverse the entire Thessaloniki urban centre, connecting east to west, and will include 2 parallel lines of approximately 9.5 kilometres each. The second line, the Kalamaria Extension, will run on separate lines totalling 4.8 kilometres each, and add five stations to the network. It

Socioeconomic and environmental Impact Attiko management is on record as saying that, when delivered, the Thessaloniki metro system will be ‘the best metro system in Europe.’ It’s not difficult to see why. Attiko say that it’s 85% complete as of the third quarter of 2018 and when finished that it will provide an estimated 65,000 journeys daily across the city - in less than 15 minutes - considerably improving life in the city by halving journey times.
The impact doesn’t stop there. In the construction phase, the project has already hired over 1,000 people, almost all of whom are local. Furthermore, a 2012 paper by three Greek academics (Roukouni, Kokkalis and Socrates) said that the appearance of the metro in the city would considerably enhance the land use in the areas around the metro for residents and visitors alike. In terms of the environmental impact, it is estimated that line 1 of the project alone will decrease CO2 emissions in the city by approximately 1.25 million tonnes and CO emissions by a further 25,000 tonnes, thanks

ways, Europe’s newest metro will also be able to claim that it’s the oldest.
Partners and Suppliers The assistance at government and European levels is an indication of the importance of this project, but Attiko also brought numerous private sector partners and suppliers on board to bring the project to reality. After seemingly being no more than a pipedream for several years, it’s good to see how many of the firms were local - contributing to their city’s history in ways they could only have dreamed of before. These include Aktor, the main project contractor, Zarifopooulos S.A., which provided fire and safety engineering, Larisonos, which was responsible for quarrying and excavation, Elemka, the main project and construction engineers, and Ekkaf, who were responsible for the vast amount of ground anchors required for the underground excavation that went on below the city. International partners included Indra, a Spanish company which provided technology consulting, Salini Impreglio, which assisted with much of the tunneling and Otis, the US firm, which installed elevators and lift systems in each of the metro stations and along the track lines.
Athens Looking Over its Shoulder The total cost of the project is estimated at around €1.5 billion, a remarkably low fee for such an ambitious project. Even more so when one considers the real options that it gives the city of Thessaloniki in the future, with

Between 2000 and 2017, its population rose from 709,365 to 865,070 - an increase of a phenomenal 3.14% per year. Fast forward to 2018, and the population is closing in on 900,000 people. the population growth, aside from helping the local economy flourish, also means that the island’s transport network needed to accommodate the new reality. With so many people relocating to the island, it didn’t make logistical sense for everyone to drive ultimately generating traffic jams and taking from the idyllic setting. It’s a fascinating story about a piece of paradigm-changing piece of infrastructure. Andrés Muñoz de Dios, Managing Director at Metropolitano de Tenerife recently spoke with

“The network has two tram lines which connect the main places of interest in the metropolitan area of the island of Tenerife, Santa Cruz, the capital of the island, and La Laguna, a World Heritage site” system in their daily lives, the system can already said to have delivered on that goal. Mr. Muñoz de Dios says: “Last year, we celebrated the tenth anniversary of the Tranvía de Tenerife with over 140 million passenger journeys. In this time, we have grown exponentially with projects both in Spain and abroad, with accessibility, sustainability and innovation being our main features. Since 2011, we have been the only means of collective transport in Spain to have AENOR’s Universal Accessibility certification in the entirety of our service activities after having successfully passed the annual external audits for renewal.”
The company is also something of a technology innovator, as he points out: “ we have developed the Vía-Móvil application, an integral ticketing system using the user’s mobile, and On-board Vehicle Speed Monitoring System (SIMOVE), which continuously supervises the speed of the tram in real time in each section with the aim of preventing accidents caused by excess speed such as the Croydon accident in London.”

“From a business perspective, Metrotenerife is a significant source of work, both directly and indirectly” of life on the island in little over a decade since being delivered. Mr. Muñoz de Dios tells us: The implementation of the tram meant, without doubt, an improvement in the quality of life of the citizens who live and travel in the metropolitan area of Tenerife. Both Line 1 and Line 2 involved significant re-urbanisation in the areas bordering on the network, an increase in green spaces, greater territorial

cohesion as it brought populous districts closer together, shortening journey times, and offering a reliable, punctual, sustainable and competitive service making the metropolitan area of the island an enormous commercial zone served by the tram.” He continues: “From a business perspective, Metrotenerife is a significant source of work, both directly and indirectly. For example, we

have a staff of 180 employees, but there is also the staff of the companies which daily deal with such related services as cleaning, gardening, security, and such like, which amounts to a further thirty people. Let it also be said that we boost local companies which can help us in the development of future projects for export of services of consultancy or products. We have already achieved significant technical assistance contracts for overseas projects where we work with local companies to export our experience and manpower.
Sustainability Popular holiday destinations like Tenerife face ongoing challenges in attracting more tourists
and maintaining standards of sustainability, so from that perspective, the introduction of the tram - with its ability to take thousands of cars from the streets every day - is a highly positive step in the right direction, and as Mr. Muñoz de Dios says: “sustainability is one of our watchwords.” He points out that Metrotenerife makes an effort to reduce the size of its ecological footprint in the provision of its service and in the management of the company by applying an energy efficiency plan which helped it to obtain the Environmental Certification from AENOR (March 2012). He adds: “We have photovoltaic power installations on the roof of our headquarters. With peak power of 880 kWp and 6,000

square metres of solar panels. This solar plant produced 14.75% of the energy consumed by the company in 2017. We have also increased our fleet of auxiliary vehicles, which are one hundred per cent electric. In the last four months of last year, practically all of our units were eco-efficient.”
Partners and Suppliers Tenerife’s location between America, Europe and Africa gives Metrotenerife access to a greater number of partners and suppliers than many companies of its kind. Mr. Muñoz de Dios says: “we have a perfectly qualified and trained local workforce with companies which help us in the operation of the service and in our overseas projection; this good fortune is also positive for them.”
What the future holds The success of Metrotenerife has led the team behind it to be contracted as a consultant on many other global city tram systems, including the Train-Tram of the Bay of Cadiz; the Malaga tram on training of drivers, and with the Zaragoza tram, in technical assistance for
ticketing, training in maintenance of the rolling stock and management of stores for the Rabat-Salé tram (Morocco) and consultancy for the extension of the Jerusalem tram network (Israel). Demand is also coming from further afield: Metrotenerife has also signed contracts with Cuenca (Ecuador) and Lima (Peru). The Cuenca deal is for consulting in the preoperation and operaation of the city’s tram work, for about 36 months. In Peru, the project, under the title ‘improvement of the railway corridor between Eastern Lima and Chosica” is a consulting project to adapt an existing freight railway to become a highcapacity mixed line. All of this generates revenue, which in turn can be used to benefit the tram in Tenerife, making it self-sustainable from a financial perspective, but also allows it to learn from other systems around the world - a truly outward-looking system which is set for the 21st century. Metrotenerife has irrevocably changed the experience of getting around the urban areas of the island for its residents and visitors alike - it truly has been a revolution in movement. fter almost 10 years of austerity, thankfully it appears that Greece is coming out of some of the most turbulent times in its modern history. In August 2018, its third and final bailout program came to a finish, signaling to everyone not just the resilience of the Greek people, but also testifying to the huge sacrifices made by the country over the course of the last decade. Most notably, the country has managed to retain many of its most valuable strategic assets, among them the Public Power Corporation (PPC) - what many have called ‘the family silver’ of Greece. Now that Greece is ready to power forward again, what better time to look at the company which will be primarily responsible for powering its growth.
A
Birth of a Greek Powerhouse PPC was founded by the Greek government in 1950, with the aim of planning and applying a national energy policy. The geography of Greece, with its thousands of islands and mountainous terrain lends itself to centralized joint-up planning, which benefits from economies of scale. Thus, the PPH readily took on the mandate to supply all Greek citizens with affordable electricity. This process began by integrating those small local electrical companies to the national grid. By some estimates, there were around 400 separate companies involved in the generation of electrical energy in Greece at that time. A high degree of fragmentation combined with

imported fuels meant power generation was as much as five times more expensive in Greece than other European countries. PPC offered the obvious solution, bringing huge benefits to the people of Greece as soon as it arrived. In addition to bringing consolidation and lower prices to the electricity industry, it began exploiting the rich lignite deposits which had been discovered underground in Greece, using them as the primary fuel for lignite power plants constructed by PPC. Soon after, PPC began constructing hydroelectric power plants and Greece had an abundance of energy like never before. This is all supported by four subsidiaries, allowing PPC, as a group, to expand its service offering. These include PPC itself (also known as DEI), the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO or DEDDIE) and the Independent Power Transmission company (IPTO).
An Integral Part of Greek Life In 2018, less than 70 years after its foundation, few people can remember a time when PPC didn’t play an integral role in the country. It serves nearly 7.5 million customers across the country and controls assets in lignite mines, power generation, transmission and distribution. Its power portfolio consists of conventional thermal and hydroelectric power plants and RES units. Its total power output is approximately 12.5GW and it hires nearly 20,000 people.

hen Anheuser-Busch InBev merged with South African Breweries (SAB) back in 2016, it was already the biggest brewer by volume in the world. As a result of the merger with SABMiller which is an integral part of the social fabric of South Africa, it was able to gain a foothold in Africa - widely regarded as the most prospective market in the world for beer sales. The size of this potential is clear when one considers that the average African drinks 10 litres of beer per year, compared to 75 litres in the United States and 66 litres in Brazil. Taking advantage of the brewing pedigree of the many Dutch settlers in the country, it quickly gained a reputation as the country’s primary brewer, establishing breweries all over South Africa - currently numbering 7 in total. From those 7 breweries, the company has an annual brewing capacity of over 3.1 billion litres and control more than 75% of the local market. The greater continent of Africa is far more fragmented with the most popular choice in many countries still being home brews. The advent of high quality beers and distribution models like jumbo bottles and multi-packs is already showing serious ground in the continent as the beer market begins to mature. By the same token, they say that its growth for the next ten years should be two or three times that of global average. Anheuser-Busch InBev looks ideally positioned to capitalize on the growth.

Global consulting firm Accenture has a symbiotic relationship with the company, whereby it helps Anheuser-Busch InBev gain key insights into its markets, which it can also use for its own benefits. Ecolab provides a similar role - conducting research into sustainable practices in energy, water and agriculture, which can then be implemented throughout its operations. Other key partners include Chespak (an innovator in packaging), Convoy Haulage (which helps navigate many of the logistical challenges presented by Africa’s sprawling landmass) and Pride Milling Co and UNIGRAIN (both of which ensure a constant high-quality supply of many of the ingredients needed for such a broad range of beers).
Africa is Rising In its most recent strategy, introduced in early 2018, Anheuser-Busch InBev began discounting some of its beers to capture new segments of the market. It’s already
reaping rewards with low double-digit growth announced in South Africa for the first half of the year. Many of these new customers will move on to different brands in the portfolio, experimenting to see which beer best suits their palate. To deliver on this huge growth potential, the company announced earlier this year that it was opening breweries in Nigeria, Mozambique and Tanzania, with the latter bringing a $100 million investment to the east African nations. The potential that is being brewed here is generating jobs, attracting still further investment and developing world class training programs in countries where they are badly required. Africa is rising.

maintain the port in 2012, it knew it was taking on a lot of responsibility. APM Terminal’s work is now nearing completion so we thought it would be a good time to catch up with Kenneth Waugh, Managing Director of the project, who was able to fill us in on the challenges and successes of the project.
Introduction to the New Container Terminal at Moin The port being constructed by APM Terminals is located approximately 10km from the

existing Moin and Limón port terminals, taking in an area of just over 1,500m2. When the project is delivered in early 2019, its total cost will have reached over $1bn - the biggest infrastructure investment ever made in Costa Rica. Not only was this investment welcomed, but as Mr. Waugh points out, it was sorely required: “This concession was long needed by the country,” he says. “Costa Rica was once ranked as having among the worst road and port infrastructures in the world. It needed

Upon the completion of the project, the Moin terminal will have an area of 80 hectares, with 1500 meters of quay, 5 berths, a 2.2 km breakwater and an access channel 18 meters deep, serving
as a shipping hub for the Caribbean and Central America. He says: “We can see the potential and strategic position of the port for the region – having a deep draft port on the Caribbean side for the transportation not only of Costa Rican exports but also providing the country with growth. In the first phase, the activity was focused on reviewing the quality of the dredged sand and the stones for the breakwater that integrate the area of the terminal. In the second phase, the services focused on reviewing the quality of the materials used in the civil works built in the terminal. Geotechnical studies were also carried out, such as piezometers, perforations on soilcement mixtures for the construction of gravel columns and analysis of direct share and consolidation..’ www.cacisa.co.cr

Environmental Sustainability Assuming APM’s new terminal generates anything like the kind of economic impact that was expected, it looks like $1 billion well invested. But what of the project’s environmental sustainability? As mentioned above, the region is home to treasured flora and fauna. As Mr. Waugh was quick
to point out, the last thing they wanted to generate economic impact if there were environmental consequences. He says: One of the most important steps we passed was the environmental impact study. First, we needed to measure the baseline. Second, we needed to estimate the impacts the building and operation of the terminal would have on the surroundings, the environment and the flora and fauna. This took a full year, and looked at the currents, winds and how the environment around us

That meant that we had to change some designs on the terminal.” This process even went as far as to effectively babysit the native turtle species nearby, so that they could nest in complete safety: “The beach beside our port is home to many native turtles, so we were keen to include their well being in our report. TRANSMARES: AT THE CORE OF COSTA RICA’S BURGEONING SHIPPING INDUSTRY For nearly 15 years, Transmares of Costa Rica has been providing logistics services in Costa Rica’s burgeoning shipping industry. A combination of Costa Rica’s strategically important location and an increasingly open economy attracted some of the world’s largest shipping countries to the country in the same period and Transmares has been able to provide them with a world class range of services as a shipping agent and freight forwarder. Transmares’ experience in bulk and break bulk shipping, husbandry, liner and tramp services, and offshore services makes it the one of the most popular shipping agents in Costa Rica & Colombia. It’s because of this experience, that Transmares was recently chosen as a reliable group to be port agency for all the vessels carrying the APMT equipment, a major terminal being constructed at Limón, Costa Rica’s major port. Transmares has committed to attend the vessels which provided 6 ship-to-shore gantry cranes and more than 20 rubber tyre gantry cranes in accordance with its role as an integral part of the Port of Limóns progress. APM - Transmares Costa Rica already host to the world’s major container shipping lines such as Maersk and Mediterranean as husbandry agent - is just the latest step in the ongoing story of Transmares, which promises to continue well into the future, an ambition reflected by its motto is ‘our ocean, our sky.’ www.transmares.co.cr

Finally, it emphasizes the importance of women to the future success of Costa Rica. Mr. Waugh says: “Our research showed that the head of the family is most often female, so we

Partners and Suppliers The sustainability efforts for APM Terminals in Costa Rica even overlap into its partnerships. Mr. Waugh says: “We have more than 250 suppliers and 90% come from the Limón area, and this has not been easy! We’ve had to work with suppliers, sometimes asking them to formalize their operations in terms of tax and compliance, to including safety programs and social responsibility and even helping them on occasion to build their own working capital.” A consortium consisting of Van Oord and BAM International was awarded the contract for the design and construction of Phase 2A of the container terminal back in 2013 with a total contract value of $460 million. Van Oord handled the construction of a 1.5-km rock breakwater, reclamation of an area of 40 hectares, as well as soil improvement works, and the dredging of the access channel and turning basin. anada’s abundant mineral resources have led to an economic surge over the past decade, with shale oil occupying most of the newspaper columns. However, its coal resources - coming to the fore again after recent legislation changes in the neighboring US - are also enormous. By some estimates, the Peace River and Kootenay coalfields alone are estimated to hold more than two billion tonnes of coal. That’s more than enough to satisfy Canada’s domestic demand, creating an opportunity for the country’s exporters. The biggest of these is Westshore Terminals, located in Delta, BC on Canada’s western seaboard, in the greater Vancouver region. Westshore Terminals is Canada’s largest

Regardless of what anybody says there’s still huge global demand for coal - with as much as 40% of the planet depending on its almost entirely. One look at the company’s vital statistics and it’s not difficult to see how it achieved this kind of growth in a relatively short period; the terminal size at Delta is 133 acres with on-site storage of over 2 million tonnes. Its peak berth loading is 7,000 tonnes per hour with a throughput capacity of 33 million tonnes. No other terminal in North America passes so much through its hands on a daily basis. This throughput is in large part thanks

It contains 2 rail loops, rotary dumpers and deep sea berths, 4 kilometres in the rail causeway, 4 stacker containers and 7 kilometers of high-speed conveyors. The company’s operations are handled by around 350 full-time employees. It’s a non-stop process. In 2015, management at the firm announced that it would invest C$275 million in new infrastructure by 2020 to ensure that the company remained the leader of its industry. The project included replacing its Berth One shiploader and three stackerreclaimers as well as building a new HQ, shops and employee facilities complex. The work is still ongoing and nearing completion.

Westshore’s Future is Ironclad A recent analyst report of Westshore Terminals’ investment outlook said that the stock was ‘ironclad’ thanks to the competitive advantages that it had built up during the year. It also noted that competitors looking to begin similar operations on Canada’s western seaboard - the Gateway Pacific and Millennial Terminals - would be delayed, allowing Westshore Terminals to consolidate its own position as industry leader. The company’s third quarter financial statements for 2018 shows that it is on track to beat its best ever year, in terms of revenue and throughput. And that doesn’t even take account of the new infrastructure investments which haven’t yet finished. It seems ideally positioned, therefore, to continue to capitalize on Asia’s booming economies.
