Three mega projects in one
Suape Port is named after the Suape beach in Brazil and was designed by Francisco de Moura, the governor at the time. It is situated in the city of Ipojuca, Pernambuco and replaced the Recife Port. The port was designed for the transportation of fuels and bulk cereals and the design is based on the Port-Industry integrated system.
A mineral asset that can genuinely claim to be one of the biggest finds in its country would be impressive on its own but when that country happens to be Australia, one of the world’s most mineral-rich territories? Even more impressive.

For example, Israel has more companies on the NASDAQ, the world’s benchmark technology stock exchange, than any other country other than the United States. Most of these companies work out of Tel Aviv. It recently was voted the 2nd most innovative city in the world, and the best city in the Middle East for young people to live in. It’s only right then, that the city should have an infrastructure that reflects its growing stature. The NTA is responsible for the design and construction of a mass transit system for the Tel Aviv metropolis. We recently spoke with Mr. Sharon Volfer VP of Resources at the NTA, about how the project is progressing and how it will make Tel Aviv a model for sustainable transport in the region when finished. The NTA was founded as far back as 1997, but has really only come into its own since current CEO, Yehuda Bar-On was appointed in 2014, from when the company began pushing ahead with its plans for Tel Aviv. As Volfer explains: “Construction of the first LRT line – The Red Line – began in August 2015 and it is expected to be operational in October 2021.” NTA sets about resolving Tel Aviv’s infrastructure problems Until the beginning of the 21st century, Tel Aviv was a city whose population had grown at a reasonable rate for decades. But around that time, increased jobs and opportunities combined with a growing reputation led to a spike in the population. From 2005 to 2015, the population began to grow at a much faster pace - over 1% annually. This growth called for an updated, modern transport system. As Sharon Volfer explains: “NTA’s vision is to provide a convenient and advanced public transport service, which will be an attractive option to a wider public, so that in 2040 it will be able to serve 40% of the metropolis residents, similar to the norm in the world’s big cities.” Getting to that stage is a considerable undertaking for the NTA; Sharon Volfer tells us: “The Red Line is considered to be the largest and most complex infrastructure project in Israel. It passes through the busiest routes of five municipalities – each requiring specific coordination, as well as complex coordination with infrastructure companies.”

Tunnel boring beneath a vibrant metropolitan area is always a challenge. Tunneling the new and first subway system in Tel Aviv, Israel’s busiest and most crowded area, without noise or interference from the upward movement is even more challenging and complex. The 23 km light metro Red line (to first line to be built) will link Petah Tikva city northeast of Tel Aviv with Bat Yam to the south. Shikun Binui - Solel Boneh Infrastructures Ltd. is in charge of construction The Box works of the western section of the Tel Aviv light rail. The western section includes two parallel tunnels of 5 km each (10 km total) and the construction of six underground stations. Shikun & Binui Group, a part of the Arison Group, is Israel’s leading infrastructure and real estate group, its origins go back90 years. Shikun & Binui is a global group active in over 20 countries in four continents. The Group is involved in mega projects all over the world worth billions of dollars, characterized by high complexity levels while maintaining the highest performance standard. Alongside the engineering challenges, there is a major and crucial factor in this big dig mega project. Ehud Danoch, CEO, Shikun & Binui Solel Boneh Infrastructures: “It is a complex project that includes stringent environmental requirements designed to significantly facilitate business owners and residents during the execution of the work”. Orry Ben-Porath, Shikun & Binui’s VP Sustainability: “We invest a lot of work and resources into stakeholder engagement under the direction of our client NTA. We make sure that we minimize the effects of the massive construction works on the environment and on our surrounding stakeholders”. There are many interfaces with which it is necessary to be in touch all the time and coordinate steps with them, such as Israel Police, the Ministry of Environmental Protection, NTA, Ayalon Freeway (30 meters above our works), residential buildings around and above the places where the work is being carried out, 5 different local authorities such as Tel AvivJaffa or Ramat-Gan municipalities. This complexity requires technological sensitivities and tools that must be run online with a control room. Danoch: “Shikun & Binui adopted a vision of Sustainability: ‘to be a leading business group that creates a sustainable advanced living environment in Israel and worldwide, for our own sakes and for future generations’. Shikun & Binui adopted advanced sustainable construction standards, and put emphasis in conducting itself with transparency while cooperating with stakeholders and others”. www.shikunbinui.co.il www.bus-ex.com

No expense has been spared to ensure that the project’s development matches the ambitions of the city it serves. The project budget is approximately US$4.5 billion, fully funded by the Israeli government. NTA currently employs 140 workers, and in total, the project employs several thousand people, including local and foreign contractors and advisors. Good infrastructure is sustainable infrastructure The first point to note about the NTA’s Tel Aviv transport plans are the number of cars it will take off the road when operational. Sharon Volfer says: “The Red Line is expected to serve approximately 250 thousand people a day, once it becomes operational. According to the forecast, the train line will remove approximately 50 thousand private vehicles from the roads.”
out by partnerships of large Israeli construction contractors and experienced Chinese tunneling companies.” These include CRTG and Solel Boneh on the western part of the construction and tunneling, and CCECC and Danya Cebus on its eastern part. Italy’s D’Appolonia takes charge of quality control on all operations, while further local firms like Dana engineering and Spivak engineering are responsible for engineering functions on the western and eastern part of the project, respectively. Finally, CRC (Changchun Railway Vehicles) is the supplier of the rolling stock, while systems tenders are currently in operation.
He continues: “NTA is committed to environmental and sustainability values throughout the project. Even at the design stages, a guide was formulated requiring the integration of green construction standards and a supervisory system to oversee the project’s sustainability values.” This includes considerations for solid waste, water recycling and the replanting of any trees which need to be moved during construction. The same criteria are demanded of its partners. As Mr. Volfer points out: “All implementation contractors are required to hire environmental managers to monitor the project, and management companies supervise the process. In the process of designing the carriages, requirements were included for energy efficiency, regeneration of energy, use of recyclable materials and more.” Partnerships While NTA has employed the services of Parson Brinckerhoff as the project managers on the project (PB is working as the Senior Consultant providing programme management, technical, engineering, planning and commercial assistance for the network), the majority of those employed by the project - both companies and people - are Israeli nationals. Sharon Volfer explains: “The larger part of the suppliers for the project are local. The project is, in fact, responsible for the employment of thousands of Israelis. Foreign suppliers are also obligated to reciprocal procurement in Israel.” First among them are the construction companies. Mr. Volfer notes: “The implementation of the underground sections of the line will be carried www.bus-ex.com

Minrav Engineering & Building Ltd
The Minrav Holdings Group was founded in 1969 by Avraham Kuznitzky, who serves as chairman of the company, and focuses mainly on the real estate sector, including: initiating residential construction projects (through the public subsidiary of Minrav Projects); BOT franchising; contracting work for construction and infrastructure in the public, business and private sectors as well as rental and management of yielding properties. Among other things, the company established the IDF Training Base in the Negev, Israel’s newest and most advanced military base, Bridge 6, which is one of the longest bridges in Israel, tunnels for the Jerusalem express train, etc. In the past year, the subsidiary, Minrav Engineering and Building began to carry out the construction of the Turkish Railway Portal for the Red Line of the NTA Light Railway. The project includes, inter alia, construction of the section from Koifman Street in West Tel Aviv to Pines Street in East Tel Aviv, about a kilometer long, including the construction of the Eliflet station and the tunnel using the Hafur and Kasa method. From the station to the entrance to Herzl Street. Minrav Engineering, which won the tender to carry out the work several months ago for a total consideration estimated at NIS 224 million plus VAT, is expected to build the project within 36 months. The company has been traded on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange since 1983. The Group operates both directly and through its subsidiaries in four main areas: Engineering management and execution of construction works in real estate, infrastructure and environmental projects as contractors using the B.O.T/P.F.I methods in the public and the private sectors. Development of residential construction projects in Israel and abroad. Leasing and management of yielding assets, both owned and B.O.T, to the business and government sectors, for use as commercial, industrial and office space. The construction and operation of wastewater purification plants by the B.O.T method In addition, The Group has other areas of activity including manufacturing, importing and marketing plastic and PVC products and operating and leasing freezing works.

“NTA is committed to environmental and sustainability values throughout the project. Even at the design stages, a guide was formulated requiring the integration of green construction standards and a supervisory system to oversee the project’s sustainability values” Opening Bright Opportunities in Tel Aviv Make no mistake, the NTA’s LTR project will transform the fabric of Tel Aviv for the better. Mr. Sharon Volfer firmly believes this: “NTA’s network of light railway lines is being constructed at the time of vast regeneration and development of the metropolis. The light railway will upgrade the urban space, improve the environment and create a new and advanced urban culture similar to that in the largest and most beautiful cities in the world.” The Israel government has also recognized its importance to the country as a whole, already setting the budget for two further LRT lines - the Purple Line (from the east of the city to the heart of Tel Aviv) and the Green Line (connecting the north and south of the city), both to be constructed by the NTA. In addition, the NTA has been assigned to begin planning for metro lines that will be added to the network in the future. The NTA’s motto translates as something close to ‘tough now, relief later.’ The light rail project will provide much relief to commuters in Israel’s second biggest city, considerably improving sustainability in the city - and presenting a side to Tel Aviv that many aren’t familiar with: the Mediterranean’s most impressive 21st century cities.

In 1978, the Suape Industrial Port Complex was created by law to manage the project and the port. The port is now one of the largest ports in Brazil and is considered one of the most technologically advanced. It serves the state of Pernambuco and large parts of Alagoas and Paraíba state. Suape is Pernambuco’s focus for development, as it plays a key role in the economy of the state. The Complex has more than 100 companies installed in its 13.5 thousand hectares territory. These ventures total more than R$ 50 billion in private investments, employing a total of 20 thousand workers directly. Growth and expansion of the Port of Suape Between 2007 to 2014, more than R$ 50 billion was invested in the Complex to implement structuring enterprises. In 2008, construction of one of the main projects, the Atlántico Sul Shipyard was competed. History was made in the Brazil in 2010, when the Atlântico Sul Shipyard launched its first ship - the Suezmax tanker João Candido. This came after a 13-year period when no large vessels were constructed in Brazil. In 2013 the second shipyard was built in Pernambuco, the Vard Promar. A year later, the Abreu e Lima Refinery was inaugurated, commencing operation of its first refining train. Private investments of R$ 187 million were made into the Complex in 2016, generating more than 300 new jobs. Construction was completed on the Agrovia Sugar Terminal of Odebrecht Transport towards the end of 2016. In the same year, Bemis, a world leader in packaging, completed construction of its factory in the Complex. The expansion project consisted of 8000 square metres of built area which resulted in Bemis generating more than 140 jobs for the local community and almost doubling their production capacity of rigid packaging, such as margarine jars, yogurts, sweets and ice creams. This year BIC Brazil has opened its Distribution Center, installed in the Warehouse of the Free Zone of Manaus, in Pernambuco. Bosch, a world leader in power tools and accessories, also started operating from the Complex using the Port of Suape as the 15
gateway to its products. The operations in the port gained strength with the installation of the company’s Distribution Center, in the Multimodal Cone, in Cabo de Santo Agostinho. In February 2017, the Governor of Pernambuco, Paulo Câmara, signed the purchase and sale agreement for the land acquired by the Aché Laboratory Group, the largest private investment in recent years in Pernambuco. Aché Group will invest R$ 500 million in the construction of a medicine’s factory and a distribution center, generating 500 direct jobs and 2,500 indirect jobs. The company plans to start levelling works in October this year. The civil construction works of the project must be started in February 2018, and it will take 10 months. The plant’s operations must begin in 2019, after Anvisa’s licenses have been obtained. Other companies that are located within the Complex are Abreu e Lima Refinery, Suape Petrochemicals, Mossi & Ghisolfi, Bunge Moinho and Alimentos, GRI Towers, GRI Flanges and LM Wind Power, as well as Termopernambuco and Suape Energia, representing the energy generation sector. Strategic location in the region The Suape Port is strategically located in the region with quick access to the US and Europe. The port is a sheltered and enjoys the calm waters of the Atlantic, reaching depths of between 15,5 to 20 meters. Favourable conditions allow the port to operate 365 days of the year, 24 hours a day, without tide or weather condition restrictions. Suape is linked to 160 ports around the world through the main sea navigation routes, with direct routes to countries in Europe, South and North America. It is located within a radius of 800km from 7 of the 9 state capitals of the Northeast; from 12 airports, 6 of which are international ones, serving over 46 million inhabitants. Suape attracts large lines of megacarriers and has one of the largest number of regular lines of general cargo ships, roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) and container ships. Suape of Port has almost 800 thousand square meters of customs terminals and 952 thousand meters to store containers and general cargo. It also supports a public vehicle yard with 18.7 hectares and expansion area for up to 23.7 hectares. With this structure, the port has the capacity to move 250 thousand cars per year. www.bus-ex.com

17
Safety and Security is very important and the port complies with the ISPS Code (International Ship and Port Security) which establishes safety rules for ships and installations, such as more rigorous entry and exit of people and vehicles in the port facilities, delimitation of the port perimeter and need for registration of people and vehicles entering the port facility. Leader in liquid bulk and cargo coasting movimentation Regarding cargo handling, the port has been growing annually above average among Brazilian public ports. In 2015, Suape became the leader in liquid bulk and cargo coasting movimentation within the national public port rank. In 2016, the port reached 22.7 million tons, an increase of 15% in movimentation of products that arrive or leave Suape. The highlight of the year was vehicle movimentation, which grew over 200% from the previous period (importation and exportation). Growth has continued unabated in 2017 and in the first quarter, cargo handling grew by 12%, registering 5.3 million tons compared to 4.8 million in 2016. The port has also registered the highest cargo growth rate percentage among the five largest Brazilian public ports. The port of Santos (SP), the main port of the country, registered a decrease of -3.5% in the period, as well as the ports of Paranaguá (-3.6%) and Itaguaí (-7.6%).
Strategic Partnerships contribute to the Suape Port’s success The tenants and the suppliers of the Complex have contributed to raising the profile of the Port and creating jobs and opportunities. The Logistic Center is located at the industrial zone and the port zone and a key operator is Tecon Suape. Tecon Suape S.A. implements and operates a containers terminal at the Port of Suape for the storage and handling of containers and general cargo. Mooring services at the Port are provided by Amarena and Compor. Suape’s Complex has a complete center of liquid bulk and gas, gathering structuring enterprises and a group of operations important to the productive chain like Ultragaz, Transpetro and Pool de combustíveis. Ultragaz is the leader in LPG distribution in Brazil with a 23% market share and one of the largest independent LPG distributors in the world in terms of volume sold. They deliver LPG to an estimated 11 million households. The Foods and Drinks Center is home to companies such as Bunge Alimentos and Solar Coca-Cola’s “Happiness Factory”, which produced soft drinks. The Complex shelters a cluster of industries which produce power components like L M Wind Power. Building sustainable homes for rural communities Sustainable development is a priority and Suape has set up open communication channels with the local communities and they have created an Executive Board to take care of land and www.bus-ex.com

property matters. The dialogue and training of the 27 communities living the territory of 13,5 thousand hectares has been prioritised. Suape is building 2.620 houses in the Governador Eduardo Campos Housing Complex in Cabo de Santo Agostinho for the resettlement of families living in areas of environmental and ecological preservation. The complex is being built in a total area of 97 hectares, 27 of which is a green preserved area. Future residents will also enjoy public leisure facilities, a basic health unit, a standard day-care center for 260 students, three Sewage Treatment Stations (ETE) and a Social Assistance Referral Center. For families with a rural profile, the Suape administration allocated 2,987 hectares to create four settlements: Valdir Ximenes, delivered in 2013; Sacambu, 2014; and two other settlements are in the process of being set up in the southern part of the state. Restoring 1000 hectares of Atlantic Forest The Complex develops environmental restoration actions (implantation and maintenance) of the whole territory, which allocates 59% of its area for environmental preservation, according to the 2030 Master Plan. These are areas of mangue, restinga and Atlantic forest preserved or in recovery that

are part of the Ecological Preservation Zone. They are preserved or recovering areas of mangrove, restinga and Atlantic forest that are part of the Ecological Preservation Zone. The Forest Nursery managed by the company Suape, provides seedlings to the forest restoration areas and has an annual production capacity of 450,000 seedlings of native species per year, which are used in the reforestation of degraded areas and environmental compensations. More than 1000 hectares of Atlantic forest have been restored through this initiative. In 2012, the State Government created the Conservation Ecological Station of Bita and Utinga, located in Cabo de Santo Agostinho and Ipojuca. Its area is 2,467 hectares, sheltering the two main water sources of the region (Bita and Utinga), in addition to important fragments of Atlantic forest. The creation of other conservation units is still in progress: The Area of Relevant Ecological Interest (ARIE) of the Estuaries of the Ipojuca-Merepe Rivers and conservation units of the Engenho Tiriri (mangue) and Engenho Ilha (mangue and restinga). All investments in Suape Port and Industrial Complex are done in line with the policy of social and environmental sustainability for the region. In 2016, Suape Port and Industrial Complex invested
in technology, safety and training to intensify the environmental monitoring of the port and adjacent areas. The result of these actions was the 4th place ranking in the Environmental Performance Index (IDA), which is evaluated semiannually by the National Agency for Waterway Transportation (Antaq). The company has trained more than 3000 community members, teachers, students, professionals from companies located in Suape and people from neighboring states on issues related to environmental pedagogy and sustainable development. The Suape 2030 Master Plan The 2030 Master Plan divides the Complex into five distinct zones: Port Industrial, Industrial, Service Center, Cultural Preservation and Ecological Preservation, the latter covering 59% of the entire territory. Suape has three projects under the command of the Special Secretariat of Ports of the Federal Government, which await the start of the bids, which include priority projects like the creation of a new Container Terminal (Tecon 2), a Vehicle Terminal and a Solid Bulks Terminal. The new container terminal will be installed in an
area with a 900-meter pier (with two mooring berths) and with a 250.000m2 retroarea, including the possibility of expansion. The terminal will have a planned capacity to manage between 1 and 1.2 million TEUs a year. The port will be able to manage 1.7 million TEUs/year. The predicted investment is R$ 1 billion, which will be invested in the construction of mooring berths and piers, dredging, equipment installation and a retroarea. Consulting firm, Ceres Financial Intelligence, has commenced with the update of the Technical, Economic and Financial Feasibility Studies and public hearings will commence thereafter. The Tecon 2 bidding should happen in the first half of 2018. Suape is also updating its Development and Zoning Plan (PDZ) which will point out the future installations, the port zoning, the projection of loads, types of cargo, equipment and environmental actions that will be developed.

That’s the claim which is made about the Ichthys LNG Project, located approximately 220 kilometres offshore Western Australia and currently nearly 90% complete. It is ranked as one of the most significant oil and gas projects in the world. Ir is hardly surprising that this is the case given its scale. The Ichthys LNG Project is effectively three mega-projects rolled into one, encompassing some of the largest offshore facilities in the industry,a state-of-the-art onshore processing facility and an 890 kilometre pipeline connecting them. The team behind the project is headed up and operated by Inpex. Its joint venture partners include its major partner, Total, CPC Corporation Taiwan and the Australian subsidiaries of Tokyo Gas, Osaka Gas, Kansai Electric Power, JERA and Toho Gas. A GAME CHANGER FOR AUSTRALIA The firms behind Ichthys are investing some $34 billion, almost $1,500 for every man, woman and child in Australia. Seldom are such commitments made without considerable forward thinking and the Ichthys Project is no different in this regard. When completed, the project’s will be quite incredible. It will be submergible platform in Australian aim to capitalize on the more than feet of energy rich Ichthys fields.

In addition, the field has an estimated 500 million barrels of exploitable condensate. When in full operation, it will produce an estimated 8.9 million tonnes of liquified gas and 6 million tonnes of liquified petroleum per annum.
DARWIN AND BROOME: THE ICHTHYS COMMUNITIES Two cities will gain firsthand experience of Ichthys before any of the others. These are Darwin and Broome, respectively the bases for the project’s onshore and offshore operations. Each was chosen because of particular qualities they bring to the table. Darwin was chosen from a shortlist of cities Black in September 2008. At that time, Inpex and its then sole joint venture partner, Total of France, announced the northern territory as the preferred home for its onshore processing facility. Huge gains have been made in the nine years since. Inpex has opened up an office in downtown Darwin, the project was granted full environmental approval - partly through the efforts of that office - and a 3,500 accommodation village was established in Howard Village near Darwin. Two dredging campaigns also served to significantly deepen the city’s shipping channel. In addition, the works at Darwin include an LNG processing facility at Bladen Point, which at 361 néctares will be one of the world’s largest of its kind. At all times, the Darwin community has been kept engaged and informed on developments, with some of them making up the 8,000 strong workforce required to deliver the onshore element of the project. Broome is no less important than Darwin to the success of the project, providing vital support which includes workforce helicopter transfers and areas of logistics. In the current phase of operations, project vessels make up to 7 visits per week to the port of Broome for services and supplies. Understandably, this generates considerable interaction between the Ichthys workforce and the wider Broome community. By one estimate, about 40 hotel rooms a day are occupied at a minimum by people working on the Ichthys Project. “These bases and these employees are going around town spending money in restaurants, with taxis, with accommodation providers,” Broome International Airport Group chief executive Paul McSweeney said. Furthermore, a dedicated Inpex logistics base has been established close to the port of Broome to support the project’s drilling program. Eventually, up to 100 workers may be transported to the field every day with the same number travelling back on return flights. In short, the Port of Broome is set for a serious upturn in business. COMMITMENTS ACROSS MANY AREAS The team behind the Ichthys Project has made a number of commitments to sustainable business practice. Take the environment as an example. It is undertaking a world class environmental monitoring program throughout its construction phase. Reports on progress are made to the local community, various external agencies and the authorities. The environmental monitoring reports are highly comprehensive and the results are currently visible to all on the project’s website. Monitoring includes everything from water quality and subtidal sedimentation monitoring, and recreational fishing and fish health monitoring to turtle and dugong monitoring and even underwater noise monitoring. Another important commitment made by the team behind Ichthys has been to engage with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples.
These are often under-privileged communities which have been overlooked by government and other stakeholders. The Ichthys commitment to engage with these communities has already led to Aboriginal and Strait Island participating businesses to effectively engage in the construction phase of the LNG Project. An example can be seen in the subcontracting of Rusca Bros Services, a locally owned and operated company, which has been able to extend its service line as a direct consequence of collaborating on the project. PARTNER FIRMS A project of this scale involves a substantial number of partner firms, providing everything required ensuring that everything runs like clockwork. The full list is beyond the scope of this article but suffice to mention the main partners. The Wood Group has secured a five-year contract to provide subsea engineering services to Ichthys, while onshore operations will benefit from the global experience of Kentz Engineering Pty. Finally, asset management and flange management services are provided by Cameron Services International. Other partners include POSH Terasea, a specialist offshore marine service contractor, which assisted with delivering the 120,000 metric ton Ichthys Explorer and CSE Comsource Pty Ltd who have developed the considerable telecoms infrastructure required by the project. The list of the largest partners is rounded out with JGC Oceania pty, Baker Hughes Australia Pty Ltd, and Hartac Sales and Distribution Pty, Ltd. A NEW AGE IN ENERGY The ability of Australia to source its energy locally will significantly reduce the traffic currently generated to meet Australia’s energy needs. The fact that it can now turn to a state of the art system with world class environmental monitoring is also a huge bonus. Until recently, Australia was almost entirely powered by coal, the dirtiest form of fuel known. Thanks to Ichthys, this is soon likely to be a distant memory, with Australia significantly enhancing the sustainability of its energy well into the second half of the 21st century.

F
ounded under Koç Group, one of the largest and most successful industrial and trading enterprises in Turkey, Demir Export has produced iron ore since 1957. In subsequent years, Demir Export also initiated production of base and precious metals such as zinc, lead, copper and silver ore concentrates in addition to lignite and chromite ore production in lumpy form and as concentrates. The yearly copper concentrate production of Demir Export from its underground operations in Giresun, north east Turkey, comes in at 15,000 tonnes, while yearly chromite production in Bursa province is 30,000 tonnes. Meanwhile, iron ore production from six different iron ore operations in Sivas, Kayseri and Balıkesir provinces has reached 1.5 metric tonnes per year, all of which is sold to domestic integrated steel mills, namely Kardemir, Erdemir and İsdemir. Demir Export is making significant steps to extend this spectrum with new operations that it expects to commence in the near future. Iron ore, after which Demir Export was named, has been the key production product for the company throughout its history. Demir Export has gone on to become a major supplier in the domestic market, serving the largest integrated iron and steel plants of Turkey. The company’s iron ore operations can today be found in Çetinkaya, Purunsur, Elkondu, Otlukilise, Uzunpınar and Şamlı. While the iron ore production in 2012 was 750,000 tonnes, the production capacity for 2013 has been increased to 1,500,000 tonnes. In May 2013, Demir Export acquired 100 percent of the

Demir Export shares of Ferrocom Madencilik operating in Divriği-Sivas. With this acquisition Demir Export is now targeting to elevate its premium quality iron ore production to more than 500,000 tonnes per annum. Another major product for the company has been its copper ore concentrate production which occurs in Lahanos, in the Eastern Black Sea Region of Anatolia. The production volume in 2012 for copper was approximately 14,800 tonnes, all of which was subsequently exported. Lahanos is still an active operation where the remaining estimated copper concentrate production for 2013 has been determined as being 12,000 tonnes.
In addition to its iron ore and copper assets, Demir Export’s Güdecek chromite operation is located in Güdecek Sırtı region of Ömeraltı village in Mustafakemalpasa district at a distance of 140 kilometres from Bursa. Last year 25,500 tonnes of concentrate was produced from this operation, whereas the target for 2013 has been increased to 35,000 tonnes. In addition to its existing operations, Demir Export plans to grow its business by developing new projects and adding new products to its production portfolio. Having produced almost 90 million tonnes of coal in Kangal between 1989 and 2012, Demir Export is now in the process of developing an underground coal mine at East Eynez, in Western Turkey, which

“Demir Export has gone on to become a major supplier in the domestic market, serving the largest integrated iron and steel plants of Turkey it predicts will start production in 2015. A fully mechanized longwall method will be employed and occupational health and safety will be of utmost importance at East Eynez where 36.6 million tonnes (3 million tonnes per year) will be produced in the estomated 18 years of mine life. Demir Export will be the first company in Turkey to implement Mechanized Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC) for underground coal production. Another major operation that the company

is excitedly preparing to run is BakÄąrtepe gold project where total mineable reserves have been estimated as being 4.0 tonnes of gold metal out of total geological source of 150,000 oz. The EIA approval was granted for the project, which will become a running mine operation by the first quarter of 2014. The operation is estimated to create 96 new direct local jobs for the surrounding community, which in turn will provide indirect economic benefit for 441 people in the region.
Demir Export
To develop the current product portfolio and to explore new production areas, the Exploration and Project Group of Demir Export capitalizes on a know-how which has accumulated over 50 years for domestic and international exploration, engineering and development projects. In a bid to development a sustainable mining structure throughout the business, the company has recently undergone a signifiant corporate reorganization. n recent years, challenges within the mining sector have revolved around solving the problems encountered with adverse geological structures and high stress conditions—critical issues which can drastically reduce production and the income flows from record high commodity prices. Although adverse geological structures and high stresses are nothing new, the requirements of ground support vary greatly at each mine site depending on the experience of the mine personnel, the bolting equipment used, materials transport logistics and the strata conditions. These challenges have led to innovations that have been trialled and implemented in coal and metalliferous mines across Australia. Jennmar’s commitment to innovation and a systematic approach to solving site-specific problems has led to the development of a broad product range that significantly enhances workplace safety, quality and productivity. In the base and precious metals market, Jennmar Australia provides a full range of products to metalliferous mines, utilising innovations designed for specific applications and tested onsite. Jennmar’s commitment to technical support and services continually underpins these research initiatives, and this has resulted in the metalliferous division becoming a division in high demand. Jennmar’s metalliferous mining manager Anthony Dodds highlighted the Jennmar Yield Lok Bolt and the Jennmar Shotcrete Depth Indicator as two recentlypatented ground support technologies that have been trialled, tested and implemented

at major mine sites. The Yield Lok Bolt plays a crucial role in preventing rock bursts, one of the greatest challenges to ground control in the mining industry. It was developed as the solution for seismically-active geotechnical domains in underground metalliferous mining operations. The redistribution of stresses in the rock strata during mining activities can trigger the rocks to break in explosive events as the strata re-establishes equilibrium. “These bursts, which can also be triggered by natural or induced seismic activity in the mining environment, have increased the need for yielding rock support, explained Trent Roberts, geotechnical engineering manager at Jennmar.
Yield Lok trials
41
Development started in 2008 with the first conceptual designs of the Yield Lok Bolt. The next stage saw the testing of the bolt at the Canment laboratory in Canada, where it underwent large scale dynamic testing to prove the product’s capacity under dynamic loading. The initial bolt was made with the minimum yield and ultimate tensile load of 12.7 tonnes and 17 tonnes respectively. The bar is upset to specified dimensions at one end and partially or fully encapsulated in an engineered polymer coating to achieve designed yielding performance under dynamic loading. The end profile of the polymer coating is configured to aid insertion of the bolt and provides shredding of the resin cartridge

“In the base and precious metals market, Jennmar Australia provides a full range of products to metalliferous mines” film. The other end of the bar is threaded for tensioning with a standard 36AF nut. A dome plate washer is used for angle compensation and to load the bolt axially. The bolt is designed to be installed by Jumbo into a standard 35mm diameter borehole. Jennmar’s Shotcrete Depth Indicator was developed to counteract the challenges that surface when installing rockbolts
and the application of shotcrete to secure underground strata, a daily practice in many hard rock mines. “Controlling the thickness of applied shotcrete is a critical process and a principal component for a permanent ground support system,” Dodds said. “When the ground support system requires the application of shotcrete over installed rock reinforcement, an accurate measurement of shotcrete thickness is required to achieve the full potential of the ground support system.” The Shotcrete Depth Indicator maximises the efficiency of this process, as it provides a visual indication of shotcrete thickness during application in real time. The process involves the use of a separate component ‘cup’ to change the height requirement of the installed ground reinforcement element or extending the height of existing fixing element or nut to achieve the specified height. The reinforcing element is then used to provide an effective visual indicator for measuring shotcrete or fibrecrete depth. “By changing the height of the element, an accurate thickness of shotcrete and fibrecrete can be applied quickly and efficiently to reinforce existing support,” Dodds explained. Jennmar’s metalliferous division has

vein mining conditions. This includes the use of air leg bolting systems where installation processes have been made more practical for the safe installation of resin bolts compared to previous methods used. “There was a lot of work carried out through trial and error to get a resin bolt system to work effectively by eliminating a process which was previously used on site,” said

Dodds. “This was a process that the onsite geotechnical staff worked in conjunction with Jennmar site personnel to develop, and that relationship, with a determined attitude, was the catalyst for the successful bolting method.” Regular training was an important part of the process and Jennmar provided operator training to ensure the new process was accepted with complete understanding of the requirements for a safe and effective installation. The training is an ongoing service provided by Jennmar to capture new staff and ensure any transition is as seamless as possible. “Training is a critical factor whenever change is introduced,” said Dodds.

n the past the port has been controlled by the Portuguese, the sultan of Zanzibar, and the British. Today, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), a state-run enterprise, is responsible for the port. The city of Mombasa, its port and the facilities around it, as well as the railway that runs from the coast to Rwanda Uganda and Burundi are important to the economy of the whole of East Africa. Transit trade to these countries, the DRC, Tanzania and South Sudan accounts for 30 percent of the port’s throughput and this proportion is growing by up to ten percent a year. Mombasa is Kenya’s only international sea port. The port has grown rapidly in recent years as a transshipment node for fuel and containers. KPA aims to increase its container capacity to 1 million twenty foot equivalent units (teu). This means that ships with a deeper draught will be entering the port. To accommodate them, it was necessary to widen the access channel and the turning basin, deepen some landing stages along the quays, and build a new container terminal. The work started in June 2011. The existing channel was deepened at nine different points and around 6.5 million cubic metres of material dredged up by the contractor Van Oord used to construct the container terminal, thought to be the only berth on the east coast of Africa to be built on reclaimed land. The project was successfully completed in April 2012, and container capacity increased

“The Lamu megaport is one of our major projects this year” by 250,000 teu to a nominal 800,000, though in fact the total amount handled is already more like 900,000 a year thanks to careful planning and the use of off-port container freight stations. With the completion of Berth 19 last year the expanded container terminal can now handle three 250 metrelong panamax vessels at the same time. To cope with these, the new terminal has been equipped with three ship to shore gantry cranes, eight new reach stackers and 27 terminal tractors. It has 120 reefer hookups. Now a second container terminal is being planned for the port as a further extension of Mombasa’s capacity. “The new project will complement the recently launched berth number 19 and the general growth in volumes of cargo arriving at the port,” said KPA managing director Gichiri Ndua. This is a major capital project, with funding provided through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the work is being carried out by Toyo Construction Ltd, also of Japan. It will be completed in stages, with three new berths providing a total 900 metres of space, at an alongside depth of 15 metres. The first phase is scheduled for completion by 2016 comprising Berth 21, 320 metres in length, a side berth 20 with 11 metres draught. Berth 21 will have the capacity to handle 450,000 teu, with two ship to shore cranes and four rubbertyred gantry (RTG) cranes supported by a 50 hectare stacking yard. The second and third phases are due to be built concurrently and delivered by 2019, adding two further berths (21 and 22, with lengths of 320 and 350 metres respectively).

These will be equipped with some eight ship to shore cranes and 20 RTGs and with a further 50 hectare stacking area. Once these facilities are in place the Port of Mombasa will be able to handle a throughput of 2.5 million teu per annum. The emphasis on container development reflects the growing global shift from bulk cargo and breakdown goods to container traffic, and the huge investments being made around the world to keep up with it. Container throughput already accounts for more than 40 percent of the tonnage that passes though Mombasa, and the local infrastructure has struggled to cope. However that will all change following the completion of these projects, at least as far as the port itself is concerned. Meanwhile the port authorities have shown they can play a good game with a poor hand. Despite constraints the port has improved its productivity significantly over recent years, recording 22 crane moves per hour and removing many bottlenecks. Waiting time for vessels is now down to internationally acceptable standards, generally less than two days. Though transshipment still only accounts for about one percent of total traffic delaying the establishment of Mombasa as a transport hub for the Indian Ocean, the aim following commissioning of the new container terminal in 2016 is precisely that. Mombasa is ideally positioned to service the many smaller ports of the Seychelles, Mauritius, Madagascar or Zanzibar, which can no longer berth the large container ships now coming into service.

But for mainland Africa it’s no good having an international standard port facility if the hinterland infrastructure that supports it is lacking. In November 2013, Kenya’s president Uhuru Kenyatta laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new standard gauge railway line that will connect Mombasa with the capital Nairobi. “The project will define my legacy as president of Kenya,” Kenyatta said. “What we are doing here today will most definitely transform ... the whole eastern African region,” The standard gauge railway is planned to run between Mombasa and Malaba near the Uganda border and thence to other major east African cities such as Kampala in Uganda, Kigali in Rwanda and Juba in South

Sudan. With this, the Kenyan government is hoping to strengthen ties between those countries through the growth of trade. Mombasa is in rivalry with the smaller but also rapidly expanding port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, though the latter tends to be looked to by the landlocked countries of Malawi, Zimbabwe and Zambia. KPA however has the great advantage of having been established over many decades and enjoying rapid growth in Kenya itself and benefiting fom international investment in its neighbours, notably Uganda and South Sudan. could become the country’s biggest ever civil engineering project. It includes the construction of a 32-berth port, three international airports, and a 1,500 kilometre railway line. A new oil refinery, in nearby Bargoni, and an oil pipeline are also planned. The pipeline would run to Kenya’s Eastern Province before splitting, with one branch running to South Sudan’s capital, Juba, and another through Moyale in the north to Addis Ababa. A 1,730km road network is also being planned. To give an idea of the scale of this project for KPA, the Lamu megaport will be Africa’s largest port, three times the size of Mombasa. Its 32 berths will give a total quay length of
ten kilometres, with alongside depths of up to 18 metres – enough to handle the largest post-panamax vessels. Construction of the first three berths will start in June under a $488 million contract awarded to China Communications Construction Company (CCCC). “The Lamu megaport is one of our major projects this year,” said Ndua.

Separate checks are made on social accountability, environment and people management. “Global players have to protect their brand, and we understand that, but we really welcome these checks,” he says. “We use them as a catalyst to improve, to assess where we are today and where we want to be five years from now. Ten years ago we were good, and perhaps we were satisfied – today we are much better and we are not satisfied!” The biggest change in that period was the amalgamation of the production facilities in 2009 onto a single site. It was a gradual process. First the original Cream Star facility moved to the new address in Hermanstad, then when the company was acquired by

Ububele, the Avondale factory moved to the same location. “It made sense because it cut down on overheads but there were other advantages too. Any milk processing facility needs to have impeccable temperature control, let alone an ice cream factory in the torrid climate of Gauteng. This year targeted investment on the production floor will see ageing equipment replaced and nine in-line freezers replaced with three more modern ones that will produce hard ice cream much more quickly. research to keep it ahead of the competition, and meet price constraints without compromising taste or texture. Though UDP has never wanted to get into the retail business it does have a couple of directly owned shops, one in Nelspruit and one in Silverton. These he would like to see grow to perhaps ten. Going forward, says van der Berg, the policy will be to guard UDP’s niche position in the mid market by appointing agents in areas not too far from Hermanstad such as Nelspruit, Polokwane, Bloemfontein and Rustenburg. “We are looking to expanding our network so that it will reach smaller customers we can’t now serve. We have the big trucks so we can supply the agent. We will support him, and he will do the marketing
because he knows his area better than we do.” In each of its three channels UDP faces different competitors, and keeping ahead of them is a challenge. However as an independent company it will be easier to stay ahead, he sums up. Decision making will be faster, and group concerns with upstream agricultural supplies will no longer be around to dilute the understanding that Stephan and Stefan both bring to the business of making and selling the best dairy products in South Africa. particularly interested in concepts available in this area.” Other trends were aero dynamic packages to reduce fuel costs and carbon footprints; increasing use of electronic braking systems and telematics to improve route management, safety and maintenance control, and the installation of cameras or park distance controls to assist drivers with docking and reversing. Back home, a major development for Serco was the purchase of 13.4 hectares of land in Johannesburg to accommodate future expansion. Meanwhile, Serco has introduced an innovative fuel saving accessory for their semi-trailers in the form of innovative aerodynamic side skirts developed by Freightwing in the US, which can be fitted to trailers resulting in a fuel saving of between 4% and 6% and an accompanying reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. The accessory helps reduce wind drag under the trailer and is particularly suitable for long distance transport. Holcroft says the lightweight flexible plastic panels have a smooth finish, providing an ideal surface for branding. “The side skirt concept is used in the United States where fuel savings of 7.45% were achieved. The under body skirts are designed to bend and bounce back from minor collisions; flexibility is important because the lower you get to the ground, the more fuel is saved.” The Freightwing offered an attractive answer because it addressed green house gas emissions and fuel efficiency.

Serco aims to extend the positive trend in the transport industry into the New Year by introducing exciting new developments. Serco MD Clinton Holcroft says by offering practical solutions and adding value to their customers’ business, they will continue to build stronger partnerships with clients. “With this in mind we visited the 2012 IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover earlier this year where the theme was Driving the Future. We returned with several interesting solutions we look forward to presenting to our customers. “Very evident was the high standard of the vehicles on show and the emphasis placed on energy efficiency,” said Holcroft. “Food safety in Europe is at an advanced stage and great care is required to ensure product is transported at the correct temperatures, making use of load dividers and telematic systems to keep track of this. “South Africa’s legislation is very stringent, particularly the new Consumer Protection Act, which I believe makes it vital for transporters to have tight temperature control over the products going into their vehicles.” Holcroft says another area of importance is load securing. “With an increasing number of our customers introducing trolleys, we were

ny conversation about mining in Australia is bound to involve big numbers— millions of tonnes of ore and coal being dug, transported and crushed, millions of ounces of gold being leached from the rock and billions of dollars invested in new projects. These numbers normally refer to the mining companies themselves but in Australia, there is at least one support company where equally impressive statistics apply. ThyssenKrupp Materials Handling (TKMH) is a subsidiary of ThyssenKrupp Foerdertechnik of Germany, which in turn is part of the German industrial giant ThyssenKrupp AG, which has an annual turnover in excess of €40 billion and employs an army of 180,000 people worldwide. Its range of offerings covers raw materials such as rolled steel sections, equipment and machinery for the mining industry, processing plants of many different kinds and at the very lightest end of its spectrum, elevators and escalators. Australia is one of the traditional sales markets for ThyssenKrupp: railway wheels and track systems were supplied there as long ago as 1865. In terms of the global size of the business, the Australian arm is small beer. With a direct workforce of about 150, TKMH generates about €150 million from blue chip clients the likes of BHP Billiton (BHPB) and Fortescue Metal: it is concurrently building stackers, reclaimers and shiploaders for both companies in Port Hedland, in support of their race to increase throughput capacity of the port.

The cost of machine erection in those remote places is extremely high. The challenge is to bring the largest possible pre-assembly pieces to site to minimise the actual site work. TKMH has broken new ground here, transporting components of 14 metres in width and 18 metres in height through the bush. The logistics of such a task is very demanding and requires careful planning, even at the initial design stage. “Another exciting area of development Iron ore reclaimer at a mine near Newman, WA

for us,” says managing director Hans Fohlmeister, “is in-pit crushing. With mobile and semi-mobile options available that have capacities as great as 10,000 tonnes per hour, we are able to provide a more cost effective solution for clients who are able to save money on what would otherwise be capitally intensive truck fleets—not forgetting the ongoing maintenance costs. And a significant
reduction in carbon emissions is another most welcome side effect.” Crushing plants and machinery are one of the most fundamental components of any mining operation and few suppliers would be able to match ThyssenKrupp’s range of experience, having supplied this kind of equipment to operations all around the world. Each raw material to be crushed has its own specific features: its size, hardness

and abrasiveness, the size of the final product and the expected capacity of the plant all have to be borne in mind in the selection of the most suitable option. “Over the years,” says Fohlmeister, “ThyssenKrupp engineers have made important contributions to the way mining operations are approached. One of the most significant improvements in open pit mining, for example, was the switch from discontinuous, cost-intensive material transportation by mining trucks to continuous, more economical transportation by belt conveyor systems.” It was ThyssenKrupp that pioneered mobile crushing plants and now, with several decades of crushing technology under its
belt, the company is today one of the most experienced and successful manufacturers of in-pit crushing systems with mobile and semi-mobile crushing plants, mobile transfer conveyors, belt conveyor systems and spreader with tripper cars. The most economic results can be fine-tuned by synchronising the crushing with the mining advance rate and providing a continuous flow of crushed material to the processing plant. Typical ThyssenKrupp installations reach capacities of up to 10,000 tonnes per hour. The difference between mobile and semi-mobile units is that the first is built ready-mounted on its own travel gear while the latter can still move from one location to the next but as a piggyback load on

Custom designed transport crawlers or common selfpropelled modular transporters (SPMT) can be utilised for these tasks. The choice of which direction to take depends on many different factors but ThyssenKrupp advocates the use of semi-mobile crushing plants when there are long periods between changes of location and especially when working in large and deep open pits and overburden and minerals are being extracted

simultaneously from several locations. A semi-mobile plant is equipped with large pontoons which are designed to take up all static and dynamic loads occurring in the structure and which just require the base to allow for certain ground pressures. In most cases, a bed of compacted gravel is all that is required to ensure a suitable foundation. Today’s mine sites and mining projects demand the fastest possible ramp-up times and optimised equipment installations,
ThyssenKrupp Materials Handling
Mobile crushing plant
and ThyssenKrupp took those challenges into account at the very beginning when designing its latest crushing plant range. It has been its objective to deliver the largest practicable modules to site depending on local requirements and limitations. In some cases, even fully pre-assembled plants weighing nearly 800 tonnes have been shipped to site in one piece. These design developments bear potential cost savings even if the primary crusher is positioned at a strategic point between open pit and concentrator plant, and thus does not require to be moved to another location during the life of the mine. It has been observed that more and more projects consider the utilisation of a semi-mobile crushing plant as the economically superior
option compared to building a conventional fixed concrete structure. Apart from the size and scale of mining projects in Australia, one other indisputable fact is just how arduous are the conditions. Add the climate to the very nature of the materials being mined and you have some of the toughest conditions that mining equipment has to contend with. TKMH has two service centres on opposite sides of the country. The main service department is based in the headquarters in Perth, while over on the north-east coast there is a sales office in Brisbane and a service workshop located in Mackay, Queensland. With support from engineers and designers based in Perth, the service

ThyssenKrupp Materials Handling department provides support to customers in all aspects of after sales with a local presence backed by years of experience. Of course, with the vast range of ThyssenKrupp products operating in Australia, it’s not possible to have every spare part sitting on the shelf, waiting to be called upon. The aim then is to provide a totally integrated service between engineering and maintenance and to enable highly trained spare parts technicians, with project management skills, to co-ordinate fabrication projects required as part of the service. The spare parts department is unique in that it provides a multitude of functions, including manufacturing services. The most effective approach is to have planned maintenance strategies for process plant and equipment when the critical wear components can be changed or serviced with least disruption to production. ThyssenKrupp encourages periodic machine and fixed plant inspections and audit reports for structural, mechanical and controls equipment. Whether it’s coal, iron ore or gold, mining in Australia is a tough business. You can plan all you want but in the event of an unexpected need, clients have the reassurance that ThyssenKrupp has the means to supply parts in quick time if this is the only way to get production running once again. The cultural, economic and governmental centre of Denmark, the city has played host to considerable urban and cultural development in the last several decades which has been facilitated by investment in its institutions and infrastructure. The investment in Copenhagen’s infrastructure has seen its transportation network become a hub within Northern Europe, a network which includes road, rail, an international airport and the Copenhagen Metro. The origins of Metro Copenhagen date back to the early 1990s when plans for its construction first started to be considered. It was in 1997 that an agreement on an overall master plan was signed, with an international tender process leading to ground being broken that same tear. Five years on the first phase was opened to revenue service, with extensions being unveiled in the years that followed. Today the Metro boasts 22 stations situated over 21 kilometres of line, upon which a fleet of 34 vehicles operate.

I.CO.P. has been employing for the execution of the above mentioned works three drilling rigs (BG30, BG39, BG40) equipped with kelly bar and rotary drive with diameter of 1,000mm. A drilling rig type BG28 and the cutter BC32 are being used, instead, for the execution of diaphragm walls. Soil stratigraphy mainly consists in Upper CPH
clay limestone and Mid CPH Clay limestone under ground water level. Due to the presence of numerous granite blocks, the use of rock drilling equipment (i.e. core barrel and bucket) proved to be necessary during the whole excavation process since the very first meters. Particular attention is paid to the installation of reinforcing cages. Indeed, as per technical specifications strict tolerances are to be observed, in particular with regard to pile length (+15/-5cm), rotational motion (<5°) and vertical deviation (<1/100). Tunnelling of one of the new lines
“The result is a Metro system providing a virtually continuous service for Copenhageners with an ‘always on’ concept”
entire week following a period of public consultation. The result is a Metro system providing a virtually continuous service for Copenhageners with an “always on” concept, where the presumption by users is they can just turn up, day or night and expect a reasonably short wait for the next train without needing to consider timetables or schedules, and have a consistently short journey time. Meanwhile, the adoption of driverless technology was unquestionably a daring

decision, one which represents a major departure from the traditional forms of rail transport that were already operating in Denmark, and indeed throughout the world. “Metro Copenhagen was one of, if not the first Metro in the world to introduce a driverless system,” Olsen explains. “While it was a bold decision to take it has been extremely successful in that the decoupling of staff from trains has resulted in a flexible demand driven service, as opposed to a resource driven one. It has also allowed us to provider a greater degree of exposure to customers for a particular number of staff, thus offsetting the dehumanising ef fec t s of employing technology to operate the Metro.” Turning our attention back to the Cityringen project we today find Metroselskabet in the midst of a considerable

renesco Three years in the Copenhagen underground Twenty more Renesco specialists are at work on building the new City Ring for Metro Copenhagen from 2013 to 2016. What’s often lovingly called the “mini-metro” has been running on its first nine kilometres of track under Denmark’s capital since October 19, 2003. In the northern metropolis’ underground, everything is a bit smaller than is usual for subways: the cars, the trains and even the diameter of the tunnel. But then the fully automatic mini-metro is truly a new development. Each of the driverless trains consists of only three cars, is 39 meters long, 2.65 meters wide and carries up to 300 passengers at a maximum speed of 80 km/h.
Renesco has to seal 21 metro stations, which on average extend down vertically 30 meters, against water pressure to 3 bar. It will take three years to line – watertight – a total surface of 150,000 m2 with 600,000 kilograms of material. Installing the sealing in Copenhagen presented some exceptional challenges – above as well as below ground. Per König: “Sometimes we work at six installation sites at a time. That isn’t that easy logistically, for the city hardly permits any construction areas for traffic reasons – not even for its own subway.” www.renesco.sk www.renesco.ch

Linear Scheduling Software TILOS is designed for linear projects: • Road • Rail • Tunnel • Pipeline • High voltage lines • Metro • Light rail TILOS uses time distance diagrams to merges site information and schedule data into a single plan. The result is a clear communicative plan which quickly proves whether a project can be executed as planned or if there will be collisions. This saves time and money during a project’s execution. They are superior to Gantt Charts or Network diagrams. TILOS can also be used in combination with Primavera or MS Project to generate the time distance view with minimal effort. The strength is the graphical user interface that generates flexible high quality plans like those done with CAD, but created and updated with minimal time and costs required. info@linearproject.com www.linearproject.com

program of work. “Right now we have two TBMs driving the first stage of the tunnelling of the new line, with the first now some 800 metres advanced,” Olsen says. “By the end of 2014 we intend to have all box constructions and shafts complete, before commencing with the finishing works across all 17 new stations. In addition to these works we have almost completed the construction of the control centre and are now beginning with the installation of technical components along the line.”

“We plan to have the line opened and in operation by late 2018”
Further afield in Italy the contractor tasked with building the first trains to operate along the Cityringen are working on train number 15. The progress being made across the project bodes extremely well for the completion of the works ahead of the line opening. “We plan to have the line opened and in operation by late 2018. In preparation for that we will aim to have all tunnelling, construction and installations complete by 2016, giving us a good lead in time to carry out test driving in preparation for the day Cityringen commences operations.”

comply serve Comply Serve specialises in cloud-based collaborative progressive assurance and risk management solutions for large infrastructure projects. Its ComplyPro® system has been deployed across the DKK 21.3 billion Cityringen project, which sees the construction of a new circular line in the centre of Copenhagen. Targeted for completion by 2018, the new underground Metro system presents added project complexity due to the city being situated at sea level, while the Cityringen network is sited 30m below ground level. ComplyPro is the risk management solution, spanning the entire project and used by all partners, including the on and offshore Copenhagen Metro Team (CMT). CMT is a joint venture between Salini Construction, Technimont ICB (TICB), part of the Maire Tecnimont Group, and S.E.L.I. SpA. ComplyPro provides a global ‘live’ Project Wide Hazard Record (PWHR) that
details hazards and resulting consequences, as well as potential accidents, during the risk analysis of the project design – plus the actions taken to control these risks. Silvestro Ferrara, risk manager at CMT, said: “This software tool functions as a single point of entry for risks and risk assessment throughout the project lifecycle, one that would help to avoid the continuous exchange of documents and be a live interface between all those involved in risk identification … a tool that allows for transparency, traceability, fast communication and reporting.” “Managing all the elements of risk in one place, with one prioritised dashboard, is of key importance to CMT,” commented Steve Tosh, managing director, Comply Serve. @ComplyServe www.complyserve.com

Operating now for over a decade, Metro Copenhagen may still be a young system compared to others, but it continues to have a sizeable influence both within the capital itself and on the international stage where it is seen as a model for other cities planning to develop modern transit systems. There is of course also a continued focus on ways to improve the system and deliver a better service to passengers. As a matter of fact, since the contracts for the Cityringen project were signed in 2011, a new extension to the Nordhavnen area of the city has been agreed that will see the addition of new stations in a new development area of Copenhagen. “One of our other responsibilities is to develop suggestions for new metro lines

As if that wasn’t enough, Metroselskabet has also been assigned the considerable task of constructing a 27 kilometre light railway system that will operate around the outskirts of Copenhagen. “This hugely important project will see our company being responsible for building the first light railway system in Copenhagen and indeed
the first in Denmark for many years,” Olsen concludes. “Obviously this is very much in its infancy as a project, however it is without question an exciting, long-term commitment that we are proud to be a part of.”
