or most people, thinking of Saudi Arabia conjures up images of either great expanses of arid untouched desert or huge, lucrative oil fields. Either picture would be accurate: Saudi sits on top of almost one fifth of the world’s known reserves of oil, while the Rub’al Khali or Empty Quarter is one of the world’s largest sand deserts and a treasure of nature. In recent years, however, the Saudi government has been working to use its lucrative oil revenue, which currently accounts for around 90 per cent of the Kingdom’s export earnings, to create a more diversified economy and to build a strong national industrial sector. Putting in place the infrastructure to match these ambitions has been a top priority. It has encompassed not only the construction of power generation facilities to drive the proliferation of factories but also the provision of air conditioning and heating for homes, schools, universities, retail centres and so on. Meanwhile, the demand for sweet water for both human and industrial use is set to exceed available supply by a staggering 60 per cent over the next 25 years, spurring the construction of energy-hungry desalination plants along the coastline. The company was the first to be authorised to build tri-generation CHP (combined heat and power) stations in different locations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. “We’re licensed to be a total energy service provider of 1,000 MW of power, 160,000 cubic metres per day of sweet water and 2.61 million tons per hour of chilled/ heating water capacity,” he said. NTCC has established a leading position as a provider of outsourced environmentally-friendly energy services power and harnesses the heat produced in the power generation process to provide heating. This produces an energy efficiency of between 60 and 80 per cent which is a dramatic improvement over the average 33 per cent efficiency of conventional fossil-fuelled power plants, where the majority of the power is lost to the environment as waste heat. Tri-generation, or CCHP, takes this concept one step further, and generates cooling as well as heating and power from the single unit, saving between 15 and 40 per cent of energy costs compared to the separate production of electricity, heat and chilled water. It also has the added benefit of lowering investments in electricity transmission capacity and avoiding
transmission losses, ensuring security of high-quality power supply. As NTCC’s name suggests, this technology is a key element of its service offering. The company can provide air conditioning by pumping chilled water into buildings from a central cooling unit, therefore removing the need for customers to build cooling towers and install costly and noise-producing equipment on site. In all cases, NTCC works very closely with it clients to provide a turnkey solution for any combination of power, heat, cooling and water requirements, designing a plant and service package that not only meets the customer’s current needs, but is also aligned with corporate strategy and scalable for future needs.

The Source Energy subsidiary provides electricity, air conditioning and water either from dedicated or district plants. By working closely with its client, the company finances, develops, builds, operates and maintains the plants over a period of time before transferring it to the client—a contract that is known as BOT (build, operate, transfer). The Intelligent Energy Solutions subsidiary, meanwhile, provides cooling, heat and power co-generation units either as dedicated CHP or tri-generation units or through district units. Meanwhile, Dubai-based property development company, EMAAR, awarded Intelligent Energy Solutions a turnkey contract to design, build and operate a 4 MW power generation plant to power one of its residential projects.
