SMEs, undoubtedly, are the backbone of economic transformation in Ghana. They contribute more than 80% to socio-economic growth and Absa’s strong footing in that space is a key part of the bank’s success, after only two years of existence in the country. A lot of thinking has gone into the bank’s positioning in the eyes of SME businesses. For example, a recent partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, has transformed access to finance for most of these SMEs, especially the ones owned by women in the country.

Accra, 15 September 2022 - The image of Absa Bank’s Managing Director, Abena Osei-Poku, gliding along the busy and complex streets of Ghana’s capital city, in search of her customers, is not unfamiliar to many. At the start of this year, it was Abena who took to the streets of Kantamanto, sliding her way through thick crowds, and into the shops of her clients. Next, she sat and interacted with them; finding out their challenges and key needs. These visits usually end with a message of acknowledgment and appreciation for their business and a pledge to resolve outstanding issues.

The 1992 Constitution, article 87 stipulates that the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) is supposed to advise and guide the President on development issues. However, the elected president comes into office with a plan -the party’s manifesto, it is in view of this that Prof. Gatsi reckons the national development agenda, agreed by all should fit into the plans of the ruling government.

Further, Prof.Gatsi also touched on the transformation of the Ghanaian economy, by calling for a well-developed long-term inclusive investment in human capital in an environment of upgraded use of technologies and real rule of law.

The Dean of University of Cape Coast School of Business, Prof. John Gatsi, has recommended that an inclusive national development plan should guide development of political party manifestos during an election year.According to him, a national plan agreed by all and sundry will ensure continuity of projects and also promote transparency and accountability.Speakingat Center for Social Justice 11TH Leadership Dialogue Series in Accra, he stated “we cannot stop political parties from developing manifestos, but we should have a national development plan agreed by all; for instance, if we decide to link the Eastern and Western corridors of rail lines, the national plan should tally with the manifesto and should not

Absa Bank’s unique focus on SMEs and a digital-first approach to banking is winning many businesses to its stable. Despite the myriad of challenges faced by most businesses last year, Absa emerged as the most profitable bank in Ghana with a 55% rise in profit before tax and a 17% increase in total revenues. It also became the first bank in the history of the country to cross GHS1 billion in general profitability.Absais a bank that has constantly trotted to the rhythm of it own beat and has over the years, delivered the goods to show for it. Earlier this week, Abena was a familiar sight once again. This time it was to the busy Makola shopping district where she got the chance to engage three SME clients involved in the sale of different goods.

It was vintage Abena; always interested in knowing what the key economic challenges are, how her clients are handling the pressure and what she can do to ease their pain points. The conversations drifted towards familiar territory of access to funds at convenient rates and the flexibility of the bank’s services and product offerings. Abena was pretty much upbeat about the

“The start of the new airline will be a key milestone in the country’s quest to deepen its participation in the aviation industry following the collapse of the erstwhile Ghana International Airlines about a decade ago”. It is reported that the government of Ghana has selected Ashanti Airlines as the official partner for Ghana’s home-based carrier (to be an international airline carrier representing Ghana).

Aviation provides the only worldwide transportation network, which makes it essential for global business and tourism. It plays a vital role in facilitating economic growth, particularly in developing countries.

When I first read this news, I decided to do this article because I’m very convinced a national carrier will enhance tourism flow to Ghana. Data show that the highest number of visitors to Ghana hail from North America and a direct flight with a Ghana based airline will keep the fare lower and enable tourist fly at a cheaper fare. Since 2010 Ghana has been without a national airline since the collapse of Ghana International Airlines in 2010, following the demise of Ghana Airways in 2004. These must be taken into account when considering environmental impacts on, for example, air quality, noise and congestion in the vicinity of airports.

Air transport’s influence on investment

Air transport boosts productivity across the global economy: improved transport links expand the market in which companies operate. As a result, companies are better able to exploit economies of scale thereby reducing costs, and to specialise in areas of comparative advantage. By opening up markets, air services expose companies to stiffer competition, encouraging them to become more efficient.

The refurbishment included: Receiling of the two wards, provision of air-conditioners and television sets, bedding, a library, repainting and decoration, provision of a play area for children; and provision of a mother’s waiting area.

Prior to unveiling a plaque to signify the official commissioning of the refurbished wards, Jennifer Jones told the gathering that she was proud of what the Rotary Club, Accra Airport Branch, has done.Shedescribed the project as very impactful and called for more of such developments through partnerships or collaborations in the“Whatfuture.you have created is dignity. Rotary Club Accra-Airport Branch adopts refurbished 37 Military Hospital Children’s Ward

The Commanding Officer of the 37 Military Hospital, BrigadierGeneral Azumah Bugri, in his welcoming address said the project did not only benefit children, but mothers, especially, who bore the brunt of their sick children.According to him, what is so remarkable about the refurbished ward is the provision of a library and the provision of a conducive atmosphere for mothers who come with their children when they are admitted to the health facility.“Childhood is a mandatory transition to adulthood which we all have to pass through. And it is hard time humanity demonstrated what you have done by ensuring that they go through this transition in safety and in good health irrespective of their socioeconomic background. Rotary Club, Accra-Airport Branch did it in 2018 and came back in subsequent years and fixed other aspects of the facility. This relation has been taken a step further from a simple assistance to what we are witnessing today – adoption. We are most grateful”, he noted.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the two parties, recognizing that children are very vulnerable in society and must, therefore, be properly taken good care of, especially, when sick in a conducive environment.

Background

To survive, each regime touted its role as a defender of the people against foreign invaders. The Soviet Union and China suffered more losses than any other country in World War II –with their death tolls reaching 20-27 million and 15-20 million, respectively. And in the decades thereafter, the Cold War kept alive the fear of foreign invasion and the legitimacy of authoritarian regimes.Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia became a model of what not to do. Its per capita income plummeted by 50% between 1989 and 1996, and did not recover to 1989 levels for another decade. Corruption and crime were rampant.

Unemployment skyrocketed from 5% in 1991 to 13% in 1998, and social problems like alcoholism rose in tandem. In 1993, per capita alcohol consumption had reached 14.4 liters (of 100% alcohol), up from 11.7 liters in 1989. In 1994, 47 people per 100,000 died from alcohol-related causes – three times higher than the US rate.

The strongman’s playbook strategy for boosting popularity dictates distracting attention away from China’s economic woes and attempting to take Taiwan by force. But history indicates that China will move cautiously and base its actions on Russia’s experience. The more successful Ukrainian resistance is, and the more costly the war is for Russia, the more likely peace across the Taiwan Strait will be.

Liberalization transformed China and Russia from relatively equal economies to ones where the top 1% own one-third of the wealth. In 2015, the bottom 25% of Chinese households owned only 1% of the country’s wealth, while the bottom half of Russian households owned just 15%.

The Communist Party of China learned from the Russian experience and pursued its

It is no coincidence that the Russian invasions of Crimea in 2014 and Ukraine in 2022 followed Putin’s controversial return for an unprecedented third term in 2012 and coincided with declining incomes (and oil prices) since 2014 and rising corruption. No explicit political resistance is expected at the start of Xi’s third term this October. But he still faces popular demands for economic improvement. Since 2012, when Xi came to power, corruption has increased while inequality is unabated. The prolonged zeroCOVID lockdowns have reduced economic growth forecasts for 2022 to 3.3%, the lowest since 1976 (excluding 2020).

While times have changed, the playbook for popularity has not. Strongmen still appeal to the people by presenting themselves as defenders of equality against poverty, corruption, and foreign invaders. The more controversial their hold on power is, the more they need success in these fights. The less success they have in the economic battles, the greater their need for an external enemy.

Like the Russian oligarchs, the new Chinese elites are usually perceived as egotistical, corrupt threats to state authority. In Russia, President Vladimir Putin gained popularity for “defeating” the oligarchs and bringing back law and order. In China, Xi’s aggressive campaigns to reduce corruption and curb the power of new billionaires – such as Alibaba founder Jack Ma – have been similarly popular.

liberalization with more care. Recognizing that rapid political liberalization in Russia had ended up sweeping the Communist Party from power, and that auctioning off state assets had given rise to billionaire “oligarchs,” the CPC took pains to avoid the same fate. By carefully controlling privatization and political reforms such as local elections, it restructured the economy gradually, making progress through trial and error, and avoided sudden and destabilizing shifts in the distribution of wealth.

As China prepares for its 20th National Congress in October, when President Xi Jinping is expected to accept an unprecedented third term, many observers worry about uncertain days ahead, especially regarding Taiwan. But one doesn’t need a crystal ball to glimpse its future. China’s leaders, for their part, are looking at Russia.

Not surprisingly, these enormous economic calamities posed a serious political threat to the regimes. After all, the Soviets and the Chinese Communists were supposed to be modernizers who would empower the people and deliver economic prosperity after centuries of oppression, corruption, and abject poverty.

China has mirrored Russia’s historical trajectory for most of the past 100 years. At the beginning of the twentieth century, both were large empires with outdated institutions that could not protect their people from foreign wars, corruption, inequality, and poverty. While Russia’s per capita income in 1900 was around onethird that of the United States, Chinese incomes were half those ofInRussia.1949, the new People’s Republic was modeled, politically and economically, on the Soviet system. In both China and the Soviet Union, a command economy replaced markets, and the central government influenced every aspect of people’s lives – what they produced and ate, where they worked and lived, and what they could say, read, and write. But Beijing and Moscow struggled to maintain production, because workers enjoyed very little reward for their labor. Among other strategies to compel people to work harder, the Soviet and Chinese governments established systems that threatened farmers with starvation if their production did not meet quotas set by the state. This approach led to more than seven million famine deaths

The renewed rivalry with the West has also boosted both leaders’ popularity. Dr Agyei-Holmes called for enhanced collaborations between the Government, businesses and research institutions to develop innovative warehouses that would keep foodstuff produced in the country.Healso called for road infrastructure development to ease the carting of farm produce from the rural communities to cities, increase manufacturing activities and encourage the consumption of local alternatives for foreign products.

Other indicators include Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita, exports and imports, homicide rate, multidimensional poverty index, inequality, and internet availability.

Dr Andrew Agyei-Holmes of the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER), noted that youth unemployment in the country had increased rapidly, amid reduction in resources and high Government expenditure.

Ghana asked to double efforts to improve citizens’ wellbeing

Human Development Index value is determined by combining a country’s scores with several indicators, mainly life expectancy, literacy rate, and income.

“Actually, we cannot see the Great Wall from space. However, when we are above the African continent on a clear day, we can see the Sahara and Kilimanjaro through the porthole. We can also see some big cities. Particularly at night, brightly-lit cities are easy to see,” Chen answered.Answering an Egyptian student who asked if she finds it difficult to be a female astronaut, Liu said: “A great deal of flight data tells us that men and women show no difference in their work performance in space. We can all fulfill training tasks and pass evaluations to a high standard.” Liu is the first Chinese female astronaut in space.

Ghana needs to double efforts to improve access to education, long and healthy life, and decent income, which are the indices for measuring its human development.

If low- and middle-income countries don’t feel like they are in the driver’s seat of their own national PPR strategies, the FIF will quickly become an unwanted and burdensome distraction.

For example, longstanding worldwide vaccination programs are now running deficits, increasing millions of children’s vulnerability to infectious disease. And COVID-19 has channeled money away from critical publichealth priorities like combating HIV/AIDS – an enormous challenge in its own right which also increases vulnerability to COVID-19 and other diseases.

Failing the pandemic preparedness test

An inclusively governed and well-funded FIF could make critical inroads toward preparing the world for the next pandemic, but only if it is accompanied by major reforms to the framework for financing global health initiatives. Without broader and immediate resourcing and relief efforts to stabilize low- and middleincome countries’ economies, the FIF risks becoming a band-aid on a gunshot wound.

in the event of a pandemic. This innovation mirrors the naturaldisaster clause that it introduced in its recent debt restructuring, following a series of devastating hurricanes.Giventoday’s unprecedented levels of debt – which have been compounded by inflation, food insecurity, and climate-related disasters – such clauses are a nobrainer. Low- and middle-income countries should start adopting them en masse.

For its part, the International Monetary Fund needs to take the lead on developing a more ambitious “debt-to-health swaps” mechanism, so that countries don’t have to choose between buying essential medicines and repaying US and European hedge funds. And it should go without saying that the IMF must move away from its arbitrary and devastating austerity programs, which consistently force countries to cut public spending and keep money in reserves even when they are facing utterly destabilizing climate, health, and socioeconomic crises.

This outcome is even more likely if there is little money on offer. Unfortunately, FIF pledges so far total just $1.4 billion, which is around one-tenth of the world’s annual PPR financing need, according to the World Bank.

as just another “development” project. Instead, everyone would recognize that when it comes to averting global health crises, the needs, gaps, benefits, and responsibilities are collective and universal, even if they are allocated unevenly around the world. After significant advocacy by poorer countries and civil society, the FIF is being designed to embody a more equitable and balanced governance model, with decision-making split evenly between rich donors and participating countries. But the question now is whether this formal balance of interests will become an operational reality.

By Mariana Mazzucato

Worse, there is no guarantee that such funding will be sustained over the long term, as demonstrated by the current struggles of the Global Fund, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, and other institutions to replenish their funding. The Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator – which hosts the global COVAX vaccine-access facility – still has a $15.2 billion funding gap for the 2022-23 fiscal year. The tepid

Manyfinancing.seethe FIF as a longoverdue opportunity to change how we collectively address global common goods like health (or climate). Under a more inclusively governed global PPR support system, all countries would participate in decisionmaking and burden-sharing, and all would reap the same collective benefits. This would mean moving away from the outdated and ineffective donor-beneficiary status quo, where PPR is viewed

global response to the FIF’s initial financing push – much of which appears to be cannibalizing from other important global health funds – does not bode well for the future. Moreover, even if fundraising from short-sighted rich countries was not a problem, the FIF is designed to target only a small part of global PPR financing needs. One major area that it misses is national health systems. These are crucial for implementing effective pandemic responses, but even the most advanced health systems are now struggling to keep up in the aftermath of COVID-19.

The success of the FIF’s PPR efforts requires a massive increase in financing for health systems in low- and middle-income countries, going well beyond the relatively meager and narrowly targeted $1.4 billion, and more comprehensive and creative approaches to expanding poorer countries’ fiscal space to invest in health. For example, under Prime Minister Mia Mottley’s dynamic leadership, Barbados is about to become the first country to include a “pandemic clause” in its sovereign bonds, allowing it to suspend debt repayments

The pandemic is not over. While the summer of 2022 is very different from the summer of 2020, because we now have vaccines, treatments, and a better understanding of the virus, it’s not enough. Every week, 15,000 people still die from COVID-19. Poorer countries still struggle to deploy vaccines, tests, diagnostics, and other tools. And countries at all income levels remain woefully unprepared for the next pandemic, even though experts warn that its arrival is a matter of “when,” not “if.”

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, global leaders have acknowledged the need for greater coordination, collaboration, and collective financing to support improved pandemic preparedness and response (PPR). Following the recommendations of a HighLevel Independent Panel, the G20 agreed last June to establish a new Financial Intermediary Fund (FIF) – hosted by the World Bank, in partnership with the World Health Organization – to help fill the $10.5 billion annual gap in PPR

Here are the facts: Taiwan was ruled by China’s Qing dynasty from 1683 to 1895. The Qing dynasty was forced to cede Taiwan to Japan, after Japan claimed its victory in the First Sino-Japanese War, Now let’s dive in…

Dr. Isaac Ibrahim BMS, M.Econ, Ph.D.

In 2012, I had the chance to travel to China to study. I had the chance to hear China’s side of the story from my Chinese friends, scholars and News. Was I to believe the Western or the Chinese Version? I decided to do a research, trace history and form an objective opinion, for history cannot be changed. The findings were an eye opener.

Kai-shek, fled to Taiwan in 1949, purporting to establish his ROC government in contradiction to the united China.

Following 30 to 40 years after 1949, the Taiwan authorities, although did not recognize the legitimate status of the government of the Peoples Republic of China as the representative of the whole of China, insisted that Taiwan is a part of China and that only one China exist, and opposed “two Chinas” or “Taiwan independence.” This suggests to me Chinese on both sides agree on the ONE-CHINA POLICY.

The United Nations General Assembly, in October 1971, adopted at its 26th session Resolution 2758, expelled the representatives of the Taiwan authorities, restored the seat and all the lawful rights of the government of the PRC in the United Nations.181 countries, based on principle of one-China including the US, have established diplomatic relations with the PRC.

Through a war of aggression against China, in April 1895, the Qing government was forced to sign the unequal Treaty of Shimonoseki, and occupied forcibly Taiwan. The Cairo Declaration was issued by the Chinese, US and British governments in December 1943, which stipulated that Japan should return all the territories it had taken, to China. These included the Penghu Archipelago, Northeast China, and Taiwan. China, the United States and Britain signed the Potsdam Proclamation in 1945 which stipulated that “The terms of the Cairo Declaration shall be carried out.”, Japan surrendered in August of that year and in its Instrument of Surrender promised in that it would fulfill the obligations laid down in the Potsdam Proclamation faithfully.

The Central People’s Government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) was proclaimed On October 1, 1949, replacing the government of “the Republic of China” to become the only legal government of the whole of China as well as its sole legal representative in the international arena. The leader of the deposed Party, Chiang

The US sent troops to occupy Taiwan, after the start of the Korean War in June 1950 and declared the status of Taiwan has yet to be determined” and later, lobbied for “dual recognition” step by step, among the international community, contradicting the declaration earlier made.

Finally, let’s see what the International Community thinks…

Taiwan is an integral part of China. In the Joint Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the People’s Republic of China and the United States of America which was released in 1978, the United States “recognizes the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the only legitimate Government of China” and “acknowledges the Chinese position of one China and Taiwan is part of China”. The US side made it clear that in the 17 August Joint Communiqué of 1982
