AUSDRILL A business that continues to prosper

usdrill has grown significantly since it was founded in 1987 with a singly drill rig by Managing Director, Ron Sayers in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. By 1991, the company had expanded its drilling operations into Africa and within a couple of years it had introduced contract mining to its services. It was in 1994 that the company was floated on the Australian Stock Exchange and since then it has continued to expand and diversify its services across the mining and energy sectors to its position today as one of Australia’s top 200 companies. Today, Ausdrill is an integrated mining and energy services group providing exploration, mine development, surface and underground mining, manufacturing, energy and infrastructure services globally. From humble beginnings, Ausdrill now generates almost $800 million of turnover and employs over 4,500 people across 10 countries. With 30 years of experience, the company delivers its services through 14 integrated businesses, across every stage of the mining lifecycle in both surface mining and underground. Historically, Australia has been the backbone of its business but today, more than half of its revenue comes from its African businesses. As the group continues to grow, underground mining has become an increasingly important part of its earnings, through its African Underground Mining Services (AUMS) joint venture. The pipeline of new projects in Africa is exceptional and the group
is well positioned to pursue this growth with the outlook for the company looking bright. 30 YEARS IN THE MAKING Entering its 31st year of operation in 2018, Ausdrill has a history of investing in its people, businesses and equipment to ensure it can successfully deliver services across every stage of the mining lifecycle, with a specific focus on production. It is a robust business
model that has delivered ‘through the cycle’ returns for shareholders and one which the management believes will continue to deliver in the years ahead. Working across the Australian and African markets, its Australian operations are primarily based in Western Australia, with a presence in Queensland, South Australia and New South Wales. In Australia, the company’s service offering includes drill and blast, grade control, water well drilling, exploration drilling,
mineral analytics and equipment sales, hire and parts sales. Its African business now yields more than half of its revenue and its service offer includes load and haul and crusher feed services in addition to all the production-related services that the group provides in Australia. Ausdrill’s African operations are diversified across a portfolio of clients within jurisdictions including Ghana, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Senegal, Tanzania, South Africa and Zambia. The group also provides
specialist underground mining services, including high speed decline development and production, through its 50-50 joint venture with Barminco Limited, African Underground Mining Services (AUMS). AFRICAN GROWTH Accounting for 52% of Austrill’s group revenue and having generated $6.5B in revenue over 27 years, Austrill’s African business offers an exceptional pipeline of opportunities. The most mineral-rich continent in the world, Africa is richly endowed with mineral reserves and holds over 30% of the world’s mineral resources. Gold mining is Africa’s main
mining resource and represents 21% of the world’s resource, across South Africa, Ghana, Tanzania and Mali, whilst 27% of the world’s bauxite reserves are in Guinea. Having built a truly African mining services business, Ausdrill benefits from its group operating in all these locations. Proud of its African operations, Ausdrill is dedicated to employing local people with its African businesses noting a rate of 97% employment of national residents. Over the 27 years of operations in Africa, Ausdrill has built an enviable record of training more than 20,000 African employees and is dedicated to developing the communities in which it operates. employing over 3,000 people across its 15 projects, Ausdrill is proud to be Africa’s largest mining contractor, operating in 8 countries across the continent. Ron Sayers retirement Having built a company from the ground up since its inception in 1987, CEO and managing director Ron Sayers has recently made the decision to retire after nearly 30 years in his role. The biggest shareholder with a 12% stake, Sayers declared in February 2018 that he would work a year’s notice, stating he would remain in position during a transition period to his successor. Sayer said: “After 30 years, I’ve made the decision
that the time is right for me to retire. You can be sure that this hasn’t been an easy decision, and it will be hard to drive out the gate for the last time when that day comes. I’ve given the Board a long notice period so that there is plenty of time to find a new Managing Director who will take Ausdrill forward for the next chapter. I know the Company is in great shape. From the youngest apprentice to the seasoned old hands who have been with Ausdrill for decades, we have the best team in the industry. As a result, I feel very confident that I can enjoy my retirement knowing the business I started in Kalgoorlie back in 1987 will continue to prosper.”
