he railway industry has changed dramatically in the decades that have followed its formation and in a world where we are virtually more connected than ever, it remains equally, if not more paramount, to be geographically connected too. With transport for work and leisure impacting millions of lives daily, Sydney Trains appreciates the importance of offering a quick, frequent and reliable transport network. A rich history A government transport agency, Sydney Trains is part of the New South Wales (NSW) transport organisation and benefits from being part of a group with a long history of providing transport facilities to both people and freight. The first passenger railway line in NSW opened from Sydney to ‘Parramatta’ Junction, situated just west of what is now Granville Railway Station, in 1855. The oldest surviving structure on the NSW railway system was opened that same year, the ‘overbridge’, runs under Railway Square near Sydney’s Central Station and remains a reminder of that first phase of railway construction in 1855. Today, it provides access from Sydney’s Railway Yard through to the Darling Harbour Goods Yard. Sydney’s Grand Central Station, an impressively aesthetic building and the busiest in New South Wales was built in the early 1900s. Boasting a rich heritage, it is described as the most iconic station in Australia by current Chief Executive

of Sydney Trains, Howard Collins. It was later during the 1920s that a visionary plan was developed to provide Sydney with a world class electric railway system and the first electric trains began running on the Illawarra Line in June 1926. Later that year, the city underground system was opened to St James and Museum stations. By 1956, the Circular Quay station opened to complete the City Circle and the Eastern Suburbs railway was opened through to Bondi Junction in 1979. In 2013, Sydney Trains replaced CityRail as the provider of metropolitan train services for Sydney. An organisation that is committed to continuous progression, the South West Rail Link opened just two years ago in February 2015. Transport for NSW The lead agency of the New South Wales Transport cluster, Transport for NSW, leads the development of Sydney Trains to ensure the transport system is safe, efficient and integrated. It is dedicated

to keeping people and goods moving, connecting communities and shaping the future of the region. Its commitment to putting customers at the centre of everything it does guides Sydney Trains on a journey of continuous customer satisfaction improvement. It is this customer centric philosophy that drives Sydney Trains to maintain its quick, frequent and reliable train service in the greater Sydney suburban areas. A million journeys Providing a service that facilitates passenger movement for work, home, school and leisure is no mean feat. Sydney Trains currently makes it possible for a million customer journeys to take place per weekday. Offering around 325 million customer journeys annually, across 178 stations, it is aiding economy growth and community connectivity. With one of its eight-carriage trains able to fit 1,000 customers, Sydney Trains can fulfil approximately 3,250 timetabled trips every weekday. Its fleet of more than

2,000 trains, operating across 961km of electrified track makes this possible. In line with its promise to put the customer at the centre of its operations, Sydney Trains’ passengers enjoy air-conditioning across 97.6% of the company’s fleet enabling the organisation to deliver an elaborate service without compromising on comfort. Its progressive nature does not stop with its continuous growth though, with Sydney Trains acknowledging the need to be environmentally conscientious. Benefiting from The Australian Rail Association reporting that only 2.6% of Australia’s transport greenhouse

gas emissions are attributable to rail, it is advocating an ever-growing movement among its customer base. With a population that is increasingly concerned about energy consumption, the organisation is therefore fortunately positioned to promote its credentials as one of the most energy efficient modes of transport available. Accelerating into the future Like its speedy fleet, Sydney Trains is travelling and has its sights set on a new destination as Transport for NSW works to accomplish its biggest public transport project yet, Sydney Metro. to deliver 31 metro stations and more than 66 kilometres of new metro rail, the development work will revolutionise the way Australia’s biggest city travels. Sydney Trains will naturally be working closely with Sydney Metro to enable its customers to disembark its services and directly board the Metro. Services are expected to start in the first half of 2019, with customers being told they won’t need timetables as trains will depart every four minutes during peak times. Plans include using technology to keep customers up to

date at every stage of their journey, with real time information available at stations and on-board trains, as well as smart phone travel apps that enable customers to plan their journeys from home. With Sydney Trains preparing for the construction of new metro platforms, it will be a significant improvement to witness unfolding. Its Central Station will have new metro platforms built about 16 metres below ground level, within the existing Central Station precinct. Acting as a critical interchange for passengers, Sydney Trains and Sydney Metro will

work together to provide full connection between the Metro station and suburban, intercity and regional rail services. The project is expected to extend into the central business district and beyond by 2024 and will run under Sydney Harbour and beyond to the south west. Anticipating an ultimate capacity for a metro train every two minutes in each direction under the city, the Sydney Metro will offer a level of service that has never been experienced before in Sydney. The Metro, together with signalling and infrastructure upgrades across the

existing Sydney rail network is expected to increase the capacity of train services entering the Central Business District from the roughly 120 an hour currently, to up to 200 services beyond 2024. It’s clear that Sydney Trains has an exciting future ahead as the transport network continues to evolve. The way commuters, communities and tourists travel is set to be revolutionised and changed forever. Whilst many metropolitan cities have similar infrastructures in place, this will certainly be an interesting project to keep track of.
