Over 127,000 Nigerians have been vaccinated against Covid-19 in Lagos MERCY AYODELE

agos is moving ahead of other states in the vaccination race, with over 127, 000 Lagosians already vaccinated almost two weeks since the exercise began, according to the state government. By category, 39,959 health workers, 54,200 essential workers and 33,726 strategic leaders, representing 31.2 percent, 42.4 percent and 26.40 percent, respectively, have so far been vaccinated. The Commissioner of Health, Akin Abayomi revealed that more females have been vaccinated than males, with 65,501 females vaccinated, representing 51.2% and 62,384 males

Lekki Shooting: US says military shot in the air

he Lekki Toll Gate incident of October 2020 involving the Nigerian Army and #EndSARS protesters has attracted the attention of the United States in its “Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2020’’. The report noted that on October 20, 2020, the security forces enforced curfew by firing shots into the air to disperse protesters, who had gathered at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos to protest abusive practices by the Nigerian Police Force’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). According to the report, police officers engaging in crowd-control operations attempted to disperse crowds using non-lethal tactics, such as firing tear gas, before escalating their use of force.

The Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, at a news briefing on Thursday said that the exercise would last till September 2022. Yakubu announced that the Commission would replace its Direct Data Capture Machine (DDCM) introduced in 2011 for voter registration with a new technology called, INEC Voter Enrolment Device (IVED). The registration exercise took place continuously from April 27, 2017 and was suspended on Aug. 31, 2018. The suspension was “to enable the commission to prepare the data for the production of register of voters and printing of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) for the 2019 general elections’’. Yakubu said that INEC could not resume the exercise in 2019 due to litigations that followed the general elections and several offcycle elections, particularly the Kogi and Bayelsa governorship polls. He added that the CVR could not also come up in 2020 largely due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic.

Ship blocking the Suez Canal fully dislodged

fter days of blockage, the Suez Canal has been fully dislodged. Before now, a giant ship blocked the Canal preventing Ships from around the world, carrying vital fuel and cargo from entering the canal for days, raising alarm over the impact on global supply chains. The blockage was estimated to have cost more than $9 billion daily. The rear of the vessel was freed Monday morning from one of the canal's banks, and tug boats freed the bow of the ship soon after.

Nigerians without NIN risk 14 years imprisonment

he Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami made the disclosure on Thursday during a briefing that Nigerians risked between seven to 14 years of imprisonment as prescribed by the constitution if they failed to obtain the NIN registration, adding that the government would not allow citizens to enjoy services without an identified number. Further, the Minister explained that while obtaining a SIM card may be optional, NIN was mandatory, saying that many of the transactions conducted in the country were supposed to be done with NIN. However, a few hours later a tweet was released saying the minister was quoted out of context and Pantami said he did not mention 14 years imprisonment, adding that he stated that the National Information Management Commission (NIMC) has been 14 years in existence since 2007.

CAN BRANDS BENEFIT FROM CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY INITIATIVES? FEYISITAN IJIMAKINWA

ost times, when we hear the term, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), especially in this clime, pictures of employees cleaning the streets near their base of operation, or the donation of a renovated or newly built road by a company, or the beautification of a roundabout, or on a grander scale; donation of a hospital ward, or renovation of a block of classrooms in a school or the donation of a lecture theatre to an institution of learning, readily come to mind. All these can qualify as CSR initiatives. However, there is more to CSR than the ‘one off, photoops’ that most brands engage in, in this part of the world. Social responsibility means that businesses, in addition to maximising shareholder value, should act in a manner that benefits society. Socially responsible companies should adopt policies that promote the wellbeing of society and the environment while lessening

negative impacts on them. Companies can act responsibly in many ways, such as promoting volunteering, making changes that benefit the environment, and engaging in charitable giving. Consumers are more actively looking to buy goods and services from socially responsible companies, hence impacting their profitability. Social responsibility is not new to Nigerians but the scale and scope of CSR has gone down, to the point that consumers (public) are now resigned to seeing very few big brands engage in occasional ‘Corporate Philanthropic Responsibility’. This is actually only one of the four types of CSR initiatives, the other three being Environmental, Human Rights and Economic. These occasional philanthropic gestures are often backed with the glam of publicity, and one ends up with the impression that it is more for the cameras than for the cause. Businessday.ng

One of the reasons why brands increase profits when incorporating CSR into their business model is because customers pay attention to the way brands react to social and political issues, and will often boycott companies with negative values. Brands utilising CSR promote values, which ultimately increases customer traffic, thus increasing company profit. What are the benefits of CSR for brands? While it is a reality that businesses operate with the goal of maximizing profits, it is still essential that they maintain a good relationship with the social environment that they operate in. Businesses that can demonstrate reliance on society and invest in their social responsibilities seem to have a greater chance of success, which is where social responsibility comes into play.

Brands that are socially responsible are demonstrating their ethical practices in how they conduct business. Customers are highly aware of local, national and global issues, and their buying decisions are influenced by these issues, resulting in them buying more from companies that show concern and display positive actions over issues that resonate with customers. It may boost the • brand’s public image. Companies understand the importance of the public, especially targeted audiences, and having a positive perception of them as well as their social responsibility to the public. Delivering high-quality products and services at a good value, excellent customer service, after-sales support, and being involved in civic causes all demonstrate how the brand cares about its customers, and the environment as a whole. Brands with good CSR policies tend to get more as well as better media coverage, which advertises the company and improves brand image. • It c a n i m p r o v e t h e attractiveness of your business to investors. Potential investors use a company's social responsibility as a part of the criteria for deciding whether to invest in the company or not. This is important especially in this era of globalization and attracting necessary external funding. Many startups can relate to this. Words spoken cannot be taken back and if you say something over and over again, every day, you are more likely to believe it. You can easily become your words. Those statements spoken, deliberately and confidently out loud are called Affirmations. Here is why it is good to affirm; 1. You can speak to anything in your lifeAffirmations work for any sphere of life including career, health, business, finances, etc. There is no limit to what you can say as long as you say it consistently and confidently. As you speak, you will begin to see changes along the way, maybe not immediately, but definitely. 2. It raises your vibration- Life will definitely throw you some lemons, but affirmations can turn those lemons into sweet lemonade. There’s a certain energy we have every day, and sometimes, you may wake up feeling low, with or without reason. igeria recently joined the league of countries in a recession as it entered into its second recession in five years. As you already know, the economy has been at mercy of COVID-19 and a drop in oil price which hit the already fragile economy like a tornado, wiping away government revenue needed to grow the economy. After all the speculations, guesses and signs that it was looming, the recession finally happened thanks to the economic strain from the pandemic. The word Recession sounds frightening to most people as they see it as a period when finances dry up. However, as the saying goes when the going gets tough, the tough gets going. While a recession is something beyond our control as individuals, we can control how we respond to economic instability and ensure that we will not only survive, but come out of it stronger. There is no better time than now to keep a keen eye on your money. If living through a pandemic was not enough to keep you on your toes concerning your finances, the recession is a louder reminder. What is a Recession Before we get too far, let’s walk through what a recession actually is. A recession happens when there’s a slump in growth and economic activity for at least two quarters (about six months). The good news is that a recession does not last forever. EASTER RECIPE: CLASSIC GLAZED HAM

Prep: 40 min Cook: 3 hr 15 min

Glaze, until glossy and well browned, about 45 more minutes.

Apple-Maple Glaze:

Ingredients

Boil 2 cups apple cider in a saucepan over medium-high heat until reduced to 1/2 cup, 8 to 10 minutes. Reduce the heat to low; add 1/2 cup each apple jelly and maple syrup, 1/4 cup wholegrain mustard, 1/2 teaspoon allspice and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg.

1 9- to-10-pound bone-in fully cooked smoked ham (butt or shank half)

Mustard-Orange Glaze:

2 tablespoons whole cloves (optional) 1 1/2 cups Glaze

Mix 1 cup light brown sugar, 3/4 cup dijon mustard and the grated zest and juice of 1 orange in a bowl.

Directions Remove the ham from the refrigerator and bring to room temperature, about 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Trim off any skin from the ham. Use a sharp paring knife to score through the fat in a diagonal crosshatch pattern without cutting through to the meat. Insert the cloves into the ham (if using), placing them at the intersections of the cuts. Put the ham, flat-side down, on a rack in a roasting pan. Pour 1/4 inch water into the bottom of the pan. Transfer to the oven and roast until a thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the ham registers 130 degrees F, about 2 hours, 30 minutes (about 15 minutes per pound). Increase the oven temperature to 425 degrees F. Pour half of the Glaze (see below for glazes) over the ham and brush to coat. If the water in the bottom of the pan has evaporated, add more. Return the ham to the oven and roast, basting every 10 minutes with the remaining

HoisinS p i c e Glaze: Toast 2 teaspoons five-spice powder in a small saucepan over medium heat with 1 tablespoon peanut oil, about 1 minute. Add 1 cup hoisin sauce, 3 tablespoons each honey and rice vinegar, 1 tablespoon soy sauce and 1 cup water. Boil and reduce to 1 1/2 cups, about 5 minutes.

Pineapple-Apricot Glaze: Grate the zest of 2 limes; set aside. Squeeze the juice into a saucepan; add 8 thin slices ginger and 2 cups unsweetened pineapple juice. Boil until reduced to 1/2 cup, 8 to 10 minutes. Strain, then add the lime zest, 1 cup apricot preserves and 1/4 cup dijon mustard.BD
