Welcome to the 8th edition of the Geelong and Great Ocean Road Planners Guide 20010-2011. This region is one of the world’s most scenic and notable locations from the crashing waves of the Southern Ocean, to the lapping waters of the bay, and the serenity of the Otway Ranges or the spectacular views from every bend of the Great Ocean Road are never far away when you conduct a conference or event in this region.
The Traditional Land Owners - The Wathaurong People
Business Events Geelong can assist you in locating suitable conference or event venues, unique function spaces, accommodation and support services and has made it even easier with the new venue and services directory detailing all you need to know. This essential guide to conferencing in the region will assist you and is an indispensable tool for every organiser. From auditoriums for 1,500 people to unique private venues for those strategic planning meetings for 10. This publication also offers ideas for specialised incentive trips or events to reward your staff whilst conferencing in the region.
Geelong Otway Tourism and this spectacular region, in 2004, 2006 & 2007, was nationally recognised by being awarded with the Australian Tourism Award for Business Tourism, reaching the pinnacle of “Hall of Fame” status at the 2008 Victorian Tourism Awards for Meetings & Business Tourism, and is testament to our dedicated team who are passionate about the region, and the people. This venues and services directory is also backed up by a comprehensive website where you can search online for particular venues and services.
The traditional land owners of the Geelong region are the Wathaurong people. The Wathaurong people gave Geelong as we know it today its name from their word ‘jillong’ meaning ‘a place of the sea bird over white cliffs’. The Wathaurong people have lived in the Geelong region for more than 25,000 years before white settlers arrived. Various clans had campsites in the area, moving about in search of food and water. White settlement from the early 1800s had a devastating effect on the Aboriginal people. Sheep destroyed much of the root crops, which the Wathaurong depended on. Subsequently, birth rates and clan numbers fell. About 140 archaeological sites have been found in the region, indicating a significant level of activity of the Wathaurong people. Yollinko Park Aboriginal Garden on the banks of the Barwon River contains the remains of living mounds and food plants. It also displays giant representations of Aboriginal implements. We work with the Wathaurong in the staging of major events in our region. To recognise the traditional owners of the land, the Wathaurong can be invited to perform a ‘Welcome to Country’ – either via a verbal presentation or a traditional story-telling dance.

LAUNA INMAN
FRANK COSTA OAM
Managing Director, Target Australia Pty Limited.
President Geelong Football Club.
In 1925, the same year that Ford opened its first car assembly plant in Geelong, George Lindsay and Alex McKenzie opened their first Target store in the city, selling dress fabrics.
The Geelong Football Club is the second oldest Australian football club, formed in 1858, shortly after Melbourne.
They then began expanding throughout Victoria via a successful policy of ‘Half the Profit, Twice the Turnover’. In 1968 some of those stores were taken over by Myer Emporium Ltd and the company was called Lindsay’s Target Pty Limited. In 2007 Wesfarmers took control of the company that by then had become Target Australia Pty Limited, a chain of retail stores throughout Australia. However, Target’s national office remains in North Geelong. Target contributes to the region in many ways, including as a major employer and supporter of community organisations such as United Way. Launa Inman is one of Australia’s most successful business women. She won the Telstra Business Woman of the Year award in 2003 for the part she played in turning around Target’s $32 million loss at the end of 2000 into a $68 million profit 18 months later.
The Cats were recent AFL premiers in 2007 and 2009. The clubs home ground, Skilled Stadium in Kardinia Park, is part of Geelong’s folklore. Over the years, the club has produced many legendary players and administrators. Tom Wills, one of the fabled fathers of Australian Rules, played for and lived in Geelong. So a guided tour of Skilled Stadium and Kardinia Park is a walk back through the history of not just one club, but the whole game of Australian football. Frank Costa is many things – a successful businessman, a generous benefactor - but he will be most remembered and admired for the role he played in re-creating the Geelong Football Club as a force in Australian football. His method was pretty simple – get good people with good values. It is a mantra that he also applies to the many other areas in which he is successful.
Target’s Managing Director since 2005, under Launa’s leadership the company has continued to deliver year on year sales and profit growth, with annual revenue now in excess of $3.8 billion and EBIT of $357 million.
Frank began his business career selling newspapers on Geelong street corners. That taught him two things – the importance of getting in early to get the best location, and that success for the Geelong Football Club was always good for business.
Her success is built on a powerful commitment to hard work, understanding what customers want and making them happy. Target’s slogan in no longer the old Lindsay saying of Half The Profit, Twice The Turnover. Rather, it is: 100% happy.
From that humble start he and his family have built one of Australia’s most successful businesses. Despite that success Geelong is very much home to Frank Costa and his wife Shirley. They have just moved into a new penthouse on the Waterfront.
Launa is renowned throughout the retail industry for her habit of walking the shop floors, to gauge customer and team member feedback on products and service standards.
As he says there’s no better place in the world than Geelong to live, to do business, or to watch football.
There are two Target stores in Geelong – one in the recently upgraded Westfield Shopping Centre and the other at Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre.

PROFESSOR PETER HODGSON
PROFESSOR SALLY WALKER
Director, Institute for Technology, Innovation and Research.
Vice-Chancellor, Deakin University.
The Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (ITRI) on Deakin University’s Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds is a unique multi-disciplinary blend of researchers who are working to solve a wide range of real world solutions. Biologists work with metallurgists to create new materials for better hip and knee replacement. Nanotechnologists work with experts in natural and man-made fibres to improve their efficacy. These include waterproof materials for clothes, clothes that automatically warm up when the weather turns cold, or clothes that resist staining.
Deakin University has two Campuses in Geelong. Its head office Campus is on the Waterfront and it has another Campus at Waurn Ponds.
ITRI is also home to the Centre for Intelligent Systems Research. This is an exciting world of robotics. ITRI is also a global leader in the design of new lightweight, environmentally friendly motor vehicles and aeroplanes. In 2008, Deakin University won the Ford Global Challenge to design a Model T for the 21st Century. Peter Hodgson is an excellent example of someone who has been able to combine working at the cutting edge of world science, while enjoying the Geelong lifestyle. Professor Hodgson is the only Victorian to have been awarded an Australian Laureate Fellowship by the Australia Research Council, and one of just 15 in the nation. He is a brilliant builder of research teams and also involved in a number of innovative start-up companies housed within the Geelong Technology Precinct at Waurn Ponds. Another thing Professor Hodgson likes about ITRI is that the research has a real international flavour to it. There are researchers from more than 20 different nationalities, many of them collaborating with colleagues in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

Deakin is a progressive award winning University. Recent awards include the 2008 Business and Higher Education Round Table award for the best collaboration with a Regional Focus in Research and Development for Education and Training. It accepted this award with a number of Geelong organisations. In 2009 Deakin won for the second year in a row a Governor of Victoria Export Award recognising the University’s innovation and commitment to advancing international education and research. Deakin’s research is relevant, innovative and responsive. Working in partnership with many communities and organisations, both local and global, it aims to provide solutions to real world issues. The University also has a Medical School, the aim of which is to produce the doctors needed in regional Australia. Professor Sally Walker has never hidden her commitment to the Geelong region. She is proud to have brought a Medical School to the Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds. Equally she was thrilled to have been able to establish the Alfred Deakin Research Institute (ADRI) at the Geelong Waterfront Campus. As the Geelong Football Club’s number one female ticket holder, Professor Walker barracked long and loud for her beloved Cats in the 2007 and 2009 Grand Finals. Born in Warrnambool, and the first member of her immediate family to go to University, Professor Walker became Deakin University’s Vice-Chancellor in January 2003. She has overseen enormous growth in the University’s students, staff and revenues. It is now a half a billion dollar a year plus enterprise, another part of the powerful legacy she will leave when she steps down as Vice-Chancellor in July 2010.

I t s ta r t s h e re The Geelong region and its people have long been providing leadership to not just their own communities, but right around Australia - even globally. James Harrison, the inaugural editor of the Geelong Advertiser, invented the world’s first ice-making machine in Geelong. The first Model T to ever roll of an Australian production line did so in Geelong. Today, Geelong continues to be home to leaders from a wide range of fields. These are some of them.
ED COPPE
PROFESSOR DAVID LOWE
Chairman, G21.
Director, Alfred Deakin Research Institute.
The people of Geelong have long realised the importance in working together in partnerships.
The new Alfred Deakin Research Institute is an impressive addition to the Geelong Waterfront. It was built with funds provided by the Federal Government to celebrate the 150th birthday of Australia’s second prime minister, Alfred Deakin. A mural in the Atrium reflects the many parts of Alfred Deakin – lawyer, journalist, politician and nation builder.
G21 is the formal alliance of government, business and community organisations, working together to improve people’s lives in the Geelong Region. It is a not-for-profit organisation, funded by the five regional councils - Colac Otway, Surf Coast, Golden Plains, City of Greater Geelong and Queenscliffe. Since its creation in 2002, G21 has stimulated major regional projects and development plans through unprecedented levels of community engagement. The unmistakable message is that the Geelong region is one that not just wants to go places, but is heading towards the future with a clear idea of the vibrant, economically successful and sustainable place it wants to be. Ed Coppe is Principal of Strategic Investment Management. He has a long record of public service to the many communities that make up the Geelong region. He is currently Chairman of G21 Geelong Region Alliance and also the G21 Economic Development Pillar. Ed is also a board member of the Geelong Chamber of Commerce, the Geelong Community Foundation, the Committee for Geelong, the Victorian Government’s Regional Development Advisory Committee, the Federal Government’s Innovative Regions Advisory Committee and the co-deputy chair of the Federal Government Regional Development Advisory Committee. Born and educated in Geelong, Ed had a successful international business career with Mars Inc. in Finance, Sales, Marketing and Corporate Strategy roles before returning to Geelong in 1995. He has no intention of leaving again.
The Institute promotes research that will enhance Australia’s future economic, social and cultural wellbeing. ADRI also contains the Alfred Deakin Prime Ministerial library, a superb collection of Deakin’s own writings as well as the many other publications that made up his library. Alfred Deakin and his family have a deep connection to the Geelong region, especially Point Lonsdale where the family still has a holiday house. Professor David Lowe has worked at Cambridge University and the University of London but is now firmly ensconced in Geelong as the inaugural Director of the Alfred Deakin Research Institute. Government departments in Canberra have drawn on his expertise on Australia in world affairs. Over the past six years he has been a commissioned lecturer for the Master of Strategic Studies offered to senior Australian and international military personnel and public servants at the Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies in Canberra. But he is never more at home then when showing guests around the Alfred Deakin Prime Ministerial Library in Geelong. His knowledge of the life and times of Alfred Deakin, and of the great legacy he left the federation of Australia, is immense. Professor Lowe has recently been award Australian Research Council funding for a major project on Australian politicians and their uses of history.

Geelong - City by the bay
The Bellarine - village life
Geelong is beautifully placed with waterfront views of Corio Bay and immediate access to the famous Great Ocean Road and charming wine growing region of The Bellarine Peninsula.
There are favourite places, there are best kept secrets and then there is The Bellarine. Just over an hour from Melbourne and with the townships generally not more than 10 kilometers apart, there is plenty to see.
The city’s main draw card, the Waterfront features exciting activities such as jet boating, sea plane flights, helicopter rides as well as cafés and restaurants, a fully restored art deco seawater bath, an antique carousel, a yacht club marina and a scenic bayside promenade dotted with brightly painted bollards. The bollards represent a fascinating and fun chronicle of the city’s past, focusing on some of Geelong’s historical and unique characters who played a part.
The Bellarine is a popular destination, and just an hour from Melbourne, offers incredible bay views exceptional wineries and food, golf courses, arts and culture and a variety of distinctive conference resorts and attractions.
Geelong’s CBD is vibrantly modern yet still retains its grand historical buildings as proud mementos of its past. The city boasts more than 10,000 businesses which include an abundance of retail outlets. It is compact enough to enable delegates to visit on foot. As well as Central Geelong’s two major shopping centres Westfield Geelong and Market Square Shopping Centre and just a 20 minute walk from central Geelong. ‘Pako’ to the locals is a vibrant multicultural dining and shopping strip, with great food and retail boutiques, Pakington Street has the lot and is also the venue for the colourful annual event Pako Festa. Geelong is a city rich in cultural treasures, and the Central Geelong Arts and Culture Walking Trails has been created to reveal highlights within the heart of the city. Wandering along the trails, you will discover the Geelong Performing Arts Centre, art galleries and public art. Indigenous and post-settlement heritage and many historical properties and museums include Barwon Park, National Wool Museum, Old Geelong Gaol, Ford Discovery Centre, Barwon Grange and Corio Villa are just a few. Geelong, with its enviable mix of culture, lifestyle, waterfront, central business district, historic and modern buildings, has everything you could want to ensure the best-run conference and the best team-building and incentive activities.
The Bellarine is also emerging as one of Victoria’s newest gourmet destinations-to-watch, thanks to an abundance of new and innovative food and wine related offerings most notably the new Bellarine Taste Trail. The Bellarine Taste Trail comprises of 32 operators including local food producers and farm-gates, provedores, restaurants, cellar doors and accommodation. In a unique twist to the ‘gourmet trail’ idea, it also incorporates local seafood businesses, which has long been one of the region’s most notable strong points. There’s also The Blues Train that rocks and rolls along Swan Bay out of Queenscliff to Drysdale and back again. What a way to top off a conference: live music, excellent food and great wine. Lighthouses at both Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale offer historic interest and spectacular views of the Southern Ocean. The coastal towns of Queenscliff, Portarlington and Barwon Heads charm visitors with their village-like atmospheres and year-round celebration of coastal living. Ocean Grove is renowned as the safest surf beach in Victoria, and across the bridge is Barwon Heads – boasting some of Victoria’s world-class golf courses. Other activities on The Bellarine include all the water-based sports and pleasures you can think of – snorkeling, jet-skiing, swimming with dolphins, surfing, kayaking, fishing, marine sanctuaries, sailing and more. www.visitbellarine.org

THE SURF COAST
s THE o t way
The Surf Coast - surf’s up
The Otways - breathe easy
Huge cliffs, roaring seas, tranquil coves and safe swimming beaches, the rugged rainforest splendor of the Otway Ranges, waterfalls, rolling hills, historic shipwreck sites, penguins, whales, seals, and the international icon of the Great Ocean Road, the towering Twelve Apostles. It’s all part of this inspiring experience.
The Otways is potentially the Great Ocean Road’s most spectacular offering to the nature-loving visitor. Comprising the small towns amid the Otway Ranges stretching from Lorne along the coast and around the cape, the Otways provides a plethora of outdoor activities.
From Geelong, as the road winds its way along the coast, you will pass the world renowned surfing mecca of Bells Beach and quaint townships of Torquay and Lorne, the splendor of the Otways rainforest and Port Campbell National Park.
Apollo Bay is the natural base from which to explore the wonders of the Otways State and National parks and offers unique touring and team-building options such as quad biking, mountain biking, sea kayaking and beautiful coastal walks.
Torquay is famous for being home to Australia’s surfing capital, iconic surf beaches, most famously Bells Beach – home to the Rip Curl Pro professional surfing contest held each year. Rip Curl and Quicksilver both have their origins here amidst a thriving surf clothing industry, and today, you too can indulge in some shopping at the factory outlets at Surf City Plaza and find out more about the history of surfing at the Surf World Museum.
The Otways are just teeming with nature’s wonders: mighty trees, birds, wildflowers, ferns and native animals and at night the light is equally natural with the light produced by the glow worms.
At Angelsea, the dense bush contrasts with the sparkling blue ocean, boasting kilometers of sandy beaches and thousands of hectares of beautiful bush land. The drive from Angelsea to Lorne along the Great Ocean Road provides some breath-taking scenery as the Great Ocean Road rises and falls with the undulating coast, this road is of world repute and showcases scenery, venues and attractions that are spectacular. Lorne has a Mediterranean feel with the addition of picture postcard scenery. It has been blessed with a myriad of natural attractions, including the sparkling Loutitt Bay, golden beaches and a lush rainforest with numerous spectacular waterfalls and cascades. Lorne has many fine restaurants, sidewalk cafés and boutique shops to explore. There are eight different waterfalls situated inland of the Surf Coast, particularly impressive in winter. It’s worth checking out the other inland towns which provide a range of natural beauty such as views to the sea from Winchelsea; a distinct rural feel from Freshwater Creek, or sweeping bushland from Bambra.
Visit the Cape Otway Lightstation with 360-degree panorama includes the Southern Ocean and the Otway National Park. Or visit the Otway Fly – a unique tree-top walk over bridges and promenades within the rainforest – a magnificent experience enhanced by the spectacular Triplet Falls which are located within this 1 hour loop walk. Head inland and pick your own berries from farms, sample delicious gourmet cheeses and ice creams from selected stores, supermarkets and delicatessens throughout the region. Fresh fruit and berries are a must to pick and taste when in season. Further inland, volcanic lakes and plains await you near Colac, at Lake Corangamite, where 40 different locations of eruption points have been discovered to date. Heading up to the Red Rock Scenic Lookout will give you a bird’s eye view of the region. Some of the Great Ocean Roads most spectacular and rugged scenery is found further along the coast towards Princetown, Port Campbell and Warrnambool. Here you’ll see the worldfamous Twelve Apostles, huge rock stacks that nature has carved from the limestone cliffs. www.visitotways.com

Geelong prides itself on being a University town and an exciting hub for scientific research in a range of areas, including the biosciences, advanced materials and medicines. Deakin University’s Waterfront Campus has conference facilities for up to 1,500. Its water views would be the envy of any facility of its type in the world and it’s within a five-minute walk of the city’s restaurants, arts and cultural precincts.
The bellarine Just around the corner from Geelong is The Bellarine it’s not quite the best kept secret it used to be as more and more people bring their conferences to the region. The Bellarine remains a very special place with excellent venues and superb incentive activities - and all just 90 minutes from Melbourne and a moment away from the conference room.
CLASSIC QUEENSCLIFF Offers unique historical hotels with up-to-date conference facilities to cater to any requirements. The regal Vue Grand Hotel in Queenscliff is one of just a few venues in Australia accredited by the International Associate of Conference Centres. Award-winning wineries are peppered throughout the area, as are superb restaurants, quaint cafés and fresh local seafood. Allow your delegates to discover the delights of the new Bellarine Taste Trail which includes businesses across the peninsula that are involved in the harvesting and production of seafood, wine and produce. That’s the real beauty of The Bellarine. One minute you’re in the conference room, the next minute you’ve kicked off your shoes and you’re walking along a sandy beach, or sitting in a café looking out over Port Phillip Bay as the big ships are piloted through the famous Rip and out into Bass Strait. Diversity and dazzling natural scenery punctuate the landscape in the Otways Country, where lush Otway rainforests meets the rich farmland of Victoria’s volcanic plains. Getting your team together before, during and after your conference, there’s no better place than the Great Ocean Road – and it’s all just 70 minutes from Melbourne.

Geelong and the Great Ocean Road offer excitement, adventure and unique experiences, all the ingredients for a highly successful and motivational incentive.
DIVING THE HMAS CANBERRA
THE BLUES TRAIN
If it’s breath-taking marine life you want to encounter, historic shipwrecks, stunning wall dives, fast drift dives, thriving kelp gardens, crayfish, abalone, scallops, dolphins and seals, its all here.
Capture the spirit of the Blues Train departing Queenscliff between the months of August and May, it offers a unique experience, and has become a popular function venue for up to 200 people.
The scuttling of the former HMAS Canberra in 2009 is fast creating one of the greatest diving sites in Australia, there are marine species from the warm waters of the Pacific and the colder waters of the Southern Ocean. Scuba diving lessons are available in Queenscliff.
The Blues Train begins at the historic town of Queenscliff, and stops at four locations which revellers swap carriages to find a new band tuning-up ready for the next act. The seating arrangement and up-beat music in this carriage leaves little option other than getting up for a bit of a boogie.
SWIMMING WITH DOLPHINS AND SEALS
LEARN TO SURF
If you’re not up to diving into the depths of the ocean, then why not have an easy but no less exhilarating day out in the water swimming with seals and dolphins.
No need to stand on the shoreline and look on enviously at all those surfers… there are learn-to-surf classes at many of the great surfing beaches along the Great Ocean Road with all you need including boards, wetsuits to make sure you ‘stand up’ for the first time.
Tours depart regularly from Queenscliff and it is an easy way to get up close to some of the wildlife that abounds in Port Phillip Bay.

THE GREAT OCEAN WALK
TWELVE APOSTLES
Constructed for every level of bushwalker, the trail stretches 100kms from the idyllic resort town of Apollo Bay, to historic Glenample and within sight of the magnificent Twelve Apostles.
The Twelve Apostles are giant rock stacks that rise majestically from the Southern Ocean and are the central feature of the rugged Port Campbell National Park. A great way to reward clients is a helicopter flight over one of the most famous geological formations in Australia.
The adventurous can stay in the eco-friendly campsites, or after a day’s hiking can be picked up at the end of a shorter trek and put up in luxurious accommodation, or you can ‘step on and off’ the trail as you please.
From the air you can see all Twelve Apostles and also at the right time of the year catch of glimpse of whales migrating along the coast.
THE THRILL OF THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD
ARGO BUGGY RIDE IN THE OTWAYS
Experience the Great Ocean Road as it should be experienced – in a luxury sports car! Get into your Ferrari, Lamborghini or Porsche - Torquay beckons, your first stop then travel past Jan Juc, Bells Beach and beyond. From here the ocean is constantly in view travelling on the Great Ocean Road past Point Roadknight to Aireys Inlet, Fairhaven, Eastern View and Lorne. Why not organise a fun and informative car rally.
Take an Argo buggy ride through the Otways bush. These eight-wheeled vehicles can take on the roughest of terrain at speed and they also float so don’t be surprised when you are heading straight for the water.

Dine in the beautiful Otway rainforest, groove your evening away on the Blues Train, step back in time and dine at an historic homestead and winery or make a splash in the sea. Here is a taste of what can be experienced in Geelong and along the Great Ocean Road.
CAPE OTWAY LIGHTSTATION Cape Otway Lightstation is the oldest surviving lighthouse in mainland Australia. The light, which has been in continuous operation since 1848, is perched on towering sea cliffs where Bass Strait and the Southern Ocean collide.
PADDLING WITH THE PLATYPUS Deep in the Otways forests this is one of those attractions that is both a unique and uplifting experience, in fact it comes with an almost ironclad guarantee of a good time. Local tour guide Bruce Jackson, a qualified biologist as well as a very able canoeist, guide and tea-maker, offers a 95 per cent chance of seeing one of the shy, fabled Australian Platypus in their own wonderful habitat – the fern-ringed Lake Elizabeth.
OTWAY FLY TREE TOP WALK
POLO
Located in temperate rainforest 500mts above sea level, The Otway Fly is the world’s longest tree top canopy walk, taking you up to 30 metres above ground level for the 600 metre walk and nestled in amongst ancient tree and fern species including the tallest flowering plant in the world, the Mountain Ash.
Have a day out at the polo. The Victorian Polo Social Club at Werribee gives everyone the opportunity to participate in the exciting game of polo by organising related social activities for its members and friends.

Sport and recreation is very much part of Geelong’s society – from tennis, bowls and jet boating to sailing, swimming and golf. The Geelong region boasts some of the most picturesque and challenging golf courses in Australia. For the golf enthusiast, there are over 20 courses to choose from. Some of the more popular courses are Curlewis Golf Club - where you can enjoy views over the bay towards Melbourne; Lonsdale Golf Club - walk in the footsteps of Touring Pro Craig Parry; the Stuart Appleby designed Sands Golf Resort Torquay; and the multiple ‘Major-winning’ Sir Nick Faldo designed 13th Beach Golf Links... surely that’s enough ‘name dropping’ to get you ready to hit the luscious fairways and make some birdies while you conference in our magnificent region. Further down the road, Anglesea’s golf course is renowned for the kangaroos and wallabies that share the fairways with golfers.
