Deck head: Build It By Design strives to be a go-to company for restaurants like Paramount Fine Food’s, Via Cibo and Burger Priest. When dining in a restaurant, consumers’ attention typically is concentrated on the food. But afterward, people tend to look at the environment itself and the care put into it. Build It By Design is a company that strives to make those environments impressive. The Mississauga, Ontario-based firm specializes in project management, general contracting and millwork for restaurant, retail and commercial clients, including McDonalds, Paramount Fine Foods, Famoso Pizza, Mucho Burrito, Burger Priest and award winning Via Cibo . Vice President of Development Alburt Lefebvre says Build It started operations in 1993 as a millwork company. When the firm learned of an opportunity to take on a general contracting project for Coffee Culture Café & Eatery, it leapt at the chance. “In the beginning, there was a learning curve,” Lefebvre admits. For instance, the firm learned very quickly that it preferred to have complete control over its work by having it done by its own, in-house labour force. Build It’s work pleased Coffee Culture, which launched the firm into many more retail and restaurant projects. Today, CEO Simon Shahin says, the company focuses on providing the quality, and consistent work its clients need. Build It maintains its consistency by training its employees to stick to the guidelines of each brand, Lefebvre says. “We work with some of the best designers in the country,” he says. “We consider ourselves the restaurant building experts in Ontario,” he adds, noting that 95 percent of Build It’s work is for restaurant clients. “We’re the one-stop restaurant building shop.”
Outstanding Work
Build It’s recent projects include a new location for Paramount Fine Foods in Mississauga, Ontario. Spanning nearly 6,000 square feet, Lefebvre explains it was a very complex project. “It included tons of complex mechanical and electrical work, as well as very high end designs,” he adds. However, the company managed to complete the restaurant with in a tight schedule of 6 weeks. “It turned out to be outstanding,” Lefebvre says, noting that the project took more time than normal for Built It because of the scale, government approvals and the intricate scope of work, including wallto-wall, back of house stainless steel, structural openings, re-facing the complete exterior, building a new patio, and restoration, as well as custom-imported details from Italy and around the world. “This particular client prides themselves on having the finest quality in all aspects of their business.”
Shahin adds that Build It uses modern approaches such as cloud computing and video conferencing to keep clients up to date on progress while providing real time updates from site. “We’re able to show them what’s going on at the job site 24/7 live,” he says.
Strong Values
Build It regularly copes with competition, Lefebvre says. “It’s a cutthroat industry sometimes,” he admits. “There are guys out there that will go to any means to succeed.” However, Build It maintains strong ethics by employing legal employees, keeping up to date on all building codes and following a strict health and safety policy. “If clients look for a quality contractor to do their work, [they come to us],” Lefebvre says. Lefebvre predicts more success ahead. “We see expansion and we see the company getting more recognized as ‘the restaurant guys in Canada,’” he predicts, adding that the company wants to expand its reach further into retail and hospitality projects. “There are a few high-profile, top-secret projects that will be launching in the third quarter.”
Last year, the company completed 40 retail and hospitality projects. “This year we’re going to exceed that,” he says. “[But] it’s not about how many projects you do. We’re trying to do more detailed, unique and prestigious projects.”

Build It’s dedicated employees are essential to its success, Lefebvre says. “Everybody here understands what it takes to get a job done,” he says. Usually, Build It can finish a restaurant space between five and six weeks. Shahin says the firm manages this efficiency by working beyond 9-to-5 schedules. “When a goal is set for the day, the whole team is going to do whatever it takes to get it done,” he says. Additionally, Build It keeps control over its projects by doing the majority of its work in-house. “The only thing we sub out is the license trades,” Lefebvre says, noting that the company itself employs specialty tradesmen who have been in the industry for decades. Among them is Site foreman Manuel, who has been key in training its new employees, Lefebvre says. “He’s taken a lot of the young guys under his wing and turned them into lean, mean building machines,” he says. “It mixes the old school construction ways with new technology to provide clients with the latest techniques in efficiency.”
