Is Covid-19 Understood by Canadians? BY GARTH MANN
I
n Canada, the statistics are now starting to surface regularly in all provinces, as medicine, science, business and politics, weigh the various options to control the spread of the pandemic. The Alberta interactive aggregate data on COVID-19 cases is published weekly.
COMORBIDITIES BY PERCENTAGES HYPERTENSION 87% DEMENTIA 57% CARDIO-VASCULAR DISEASE 57% RENAL DISEASES 43% DIABETES 42% RESPIRATORY DISEASES 39% CANCERS 24% LIVER DISEASES 4% IMMUNO-DEFICIENCY DISEASES 3%
The numbers and percentage of health conditions among COVID-19 deaths have revealed that individuals who are mature seniors and who have multiple pre-conditions called comorbidities, are most subject to a more severe illness, and even death because of COVID-19. Our position at The Manor Villages is to protect our residents. What the statistics are telling Canadians below the age of 60 is that COVID-19 is not a serious illness in most cases, providing the patient is relatively healthy, without multiple comorbidities. Therefore, one would think that every Canadian would: • seriously consider becoming more mobile, with daily exercise routines • want to understand their personal vitals and biometrics following lab test results. It makes sense that the patient understands and follows their vitals and lab tests. • want to understand what nourishing foods and liquids can be metabolized for bodily digestive functions. • work to de-stress regularly to help lower their risks of comorbidities while improving their sleep habits. A healthy body/mind requires seven to eight hours each night.
Unfortunately, the statistics do not indicate that this is how Canadians are thinking. One can only assume that their doctors are fatigued requesting their patients socialize at health clubs instead of at restaurants and pubs serving deepfried foods. Four times the number of Canadians die from drug abuse and suicides than from COVID-19. Sadly, very few people know or care about the importance of mental wellness.

A POSITIVE FUTURE FOR CANADIAN OIL AND GAS // CODY BATTERSHILL
A Positive Future for Canadian Oil and Gas BY CODY BATTERSHILL
I
f you weren’t sure whether Canada ought to control its own destiny and take its place among the safest, most innovative, most reliable and successful energy suppliers on the planet, a recent study from life-cycle experts at Stanford, U of Toronto and U of Calgary might help convince you. Before I get into its details, let’s acknowledge first that the study couldn’t have come at a better time, as the world’s oil and gas sector requires some $2 trillion in global investment by 2030 just to keep up with demand. Canada’s part of that number. Recent purchases by major refiners point toward strong global demand for Canadian oil, both right now and in future – but we lack sufficient market access. Compare us to Alaska, Texas, Mexico, Venezuela, Nigeria, Russia, Saudi Arabia and many others. They have the access; we don’t. And while the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion (TMX) will enable Canadian oil to find its way to global markets without discounting every barrel as it passes through the U.S. Gulf Coast, we shouldn’t settle merely for better access. The new study has a terrific story to tell, and we should tell it. Some of the best life cycle analysts at Stanford, U of C and U of T found upstream oilsands emissions intensities are lower than previously reported – and by a significant amount, from 14 to 35 per cent. The study compared recent data from 2018 to a study based on data from 2015. Further, the study, which was supported by Alberta Innovates and Emissions Reduction Alberta, found that new technological advancements are projected to reduce upstream emissions from steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) operations even further – by 14 to 19 per cent. We should be proud of those figures, and of the fact our nation ranks number one out of the world’s top 20 oil reserve
FURTHER, THE STUDY, WHICH WAS SUPPORTED BY ALBERTA INNOVATES AND EMISSIONS REDUCTION ALBERTA, FOUND THAT NEW TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS ARE PROJECTED TO REDUCE UPSTREAM EMISSIONS FROM STEAM-ASSISTED GRAVITY DRAINAGE (SAGD) OPERATIONS EVEN FURTHER – BY 14 TO 19 PER CENT. holders on environmental, social and governance metrics, and we’re global leaders in sustainable oil and gas production. But again, these strong numbers on emissions intensities reductions are just part of a bright future. Without access in the form of TMX, Canadians will likely miss out on an extraordinary economic benefit. TMX will help transport valuable, environmentally responsible Canadian oil to global markets, all the while maximizing the price we receive for our resources. Those benefits flow to every Canadian. How? Consider that between 2000 and 2018, the oil and gas sector contributed nearly $500 billion to government revenues. Today it supports hundreds of thousands of jobs right across the country. Continually evolving advancements in emissions efficiencies, improved market access and our exceptional ranking on environmental, social and governance leadership point to a promising era for Canadian oil and gas. Let’s ensure it happens. University of Calgary Properties Group Adds New Master Plan Project to Portfolio UCPG will lead the future redevelopment of University Innovation Quarter, formerly known as University Research Park University of Calgary Properties Group (UCPG), formerly West Campus Development Corporation, is taking on the management and redevelopment of a new project. The University Innovation Quarter (UIQ) lands, formerly known as University Research Park, now falls under the UCPG portfolio. The 76-acre site immediately adjacent to the University of Calgary’s main campus has significant capacity for growth, change, and densification to accommodate a rich ecosystem of research, industry, innovation, and entrepreneurial activities. There are currently 12 buildings located in UIQ comprising approximately 1.24 million square feet of office or lab space. There will be no impact on the current tenancy or leases with this management change. Ownership of the lands was transferred from the Province of Alberta to the University of Calgary early last year, with the university’s intent to establish an innovation and research cluster to be known as UIQ. The University of Calgary then entered a 130-year head lease agreement with University Innovation Quarter Trust to operate, manage, and develop UIQ lands to support an innovation ecosystem. As the developer, UCPG will serve as Trustee for University Innovation Quarter Trust. With this new opportunity, UCPG will continue to carry out its vision of being an award-winning leader in creating amazing places as the trusted developer for the University of Calgary. Says James Robertson, President and CEO, University of Calgary Properties Group, “Revitalizing UIQ will help create a world-class destination for research and innovation while demonstrating leadership in environmental sustainability and social responsibility. We have a strong track record to date with the development of University District, and we look forward to bringing our vision and talent to this exciting project.”
“The University of Calgary has a robust and integrated innovation ecosystem that is focused on linking discovery, creativity, invention and entrepreneurship to solve local, national, and global challenges,” says Ed McCauley, President and Vice-Chancellor, University of Calgary. “University Innovation Quarter will be a dedicated and recognized location where research, cross-sector collaboration, ideation, incubation, and entrepreneurship will be translated into scalable solutions to improve the world. UIQ will be a hub for transformative action to boost our economy, create new jobs and forge positive change.” With the initiation of this large scale, long-term project, UCPG will be taking on a series of concurrent tasks. This includes reaching out to existing tenants and key stakeholders from the surrounding area to better understand the site conditions and determine how the site can be transformed into a dynamic and thriving hub to fuel the University of Calgary’s innovation agenda. UIQ is located immediately north of the University of Calgary main campus and is bounded by the Brentwood LRT station and Crowchild Trail NW to the east, 37 Street NW to the west, 32 Avenue NW to the south and 40 Avenue NW to the north. University Innovation Quarter sits at the north end of the University of Calgary campus. For more information about University of Calgary Properties Group Ltd., visit www.ucpg.ca. Live Luxuriously and Affordably at Aria in University District The vibrant community of University District in Calgary’s northwest is quickly becoming a hotspot to live, work and play thanks to its mindful design, broad variety of residential options and vast amenities to suit every lifestyle. In just four years, University District has grown into Calgary’s best-selling urban community, focusing on offering choice, a growing retail district and lifestyle-focused amenities. Speaking of choice, Aria, a new, five-storey urban rental apartment building, is one of the latest to open its doors in University District. It houses 288 thoughtfully-designed apartments which are affordably luxurious, and also provides residents with access to Calgary’s largest amenityrich courtyard. The building is in a prime location along University Avenue. “We’re finding considerable rental interest in Northwest Calgary,” said Novy Cheema, Managing Director at Gracorp. “Given the proximity to the Alberta Children’s Hospital, Foothills Medical Centre and the University of Calgary, we are seeing substantial demand from students, health care professionals, downsizers and the academic community. Our tenants love the ample amenities within the building, as well as the convenience of living above Save-On-Foods, Market Wines and other key retailers.” The final phase of Aria was recently completed, with the sought-after rental property offering one, two- and threebedroom suites starting at $1,300’s per month. A communal fire pit, event stage, barbeques, a pickleball court and pet areas are just some of Aria’s amazing amenities. Suite sizes range from 532 to 1,149 square feet and incorporate contemporary designs in their spacious interiors. The modernist kitchens with quartz countertops, stainless steel appliances, innovative storage, and walk-in closets are sure to dazzle. Said Cheema, “We are encouraged by the rapid growth of University District over the last two years and look forward
to pursuing additional development opportunities in this thriving area.” Residents of Aria can also take advantage of the building’s fitness room, games and lounge room, community chefs’ kitchen and much more. The community is projected to continue welcoming a number of popular retailers and services over the next few years as development continues. OF A COMMUNITY
THE MANY ACHIEVEMENTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS OF DR. ANMOL KAPOOR AND RAMAN KAPOOR
BY MELANIE DARBYSHIRE
I
t’s rare enough when one person is highly accomplished. A success in their field, entrepreneur, philanthropist, community leader, spouse, parent; for one individual to be all of these is impressive in and of itself. Partner them with another who is similarly accomplished, in distinct yet complimentary ways, and you’ve got a rarefied couple indeed. While Dr. Anmol S. Kapoor, M.D. and his wife Raman Kapoor never set out to typify such archetype, having focused instead on their work and family, it’s that work - collective and individual, for profit and not-for-profit — which lands them in the category nonetheless. Married 22 years, the Cardiologist and Registered Dietician have spent the last two decades working to improve the health of tens of thousands of Calgarians and Albertans, particularly ethnic minorities, through the establishment of medical clinics, charitable endeavours, technological innovations and community engagement. “We are each other’s strengths,” Raman explains candidly. “We understand our own strengths and how we can utilize each other’s strengths to keep moving forward. We wouldn’t be able to do one without the other. It’s truly a testament to teamwork and a game of balance.” Serious teamwork indeed. Between the two they own and operate four cardiology clinics, a medical aesthetics clinic,
a pharmacogenomic clinic, a registered dietician practice, a heart-health charitable foundation and a biotechnology company. They also have two kids, ages 10 and 12. But don’t assume they’ve come to it easy. Theirs is a decadeslong journey involving significant challenge, visionary determination and a desire to help others. Born and raised in Calgary, eight-year-old Raman first met nine-year-old Anmol on a family trip to India, where Anmol was born and raised. “We attended a ceremony hosted by Anmol’s parents for him and his brothers,” Raman recounts. “Anmol’s grandfather had bought him this brand-new bicycle as a gift. Of course he let everybody ride it but me!” “One little mistake!” Anmol chuckles fondly. The snub was soon forgotten and Anmol, who eventually went to Russia for medical school, married Raman in 1998, then immigrated to Canada in 2000. “When I arrived, I was one of those new immigrants who had no idea, but a strong desire to do something in Canada to help people and be successful like everyone else,” he recalls. “There were challenges as an international doctor, to have my medical training recognized and apply for further training opportunities which were limited for international doctors.” The couple landed in Lethbridge where Raman practiced as a registered dietitian in multiple areas ranging from

geriatrics, paediatrics, cardiac and community. and Anmol completed his second degree, in Information Technology at the University of Lethbridge. “I wanted to understand how computers and information systems work,” he explains. “That allowed me to upgrade my medicine skills. The dream was to combine technology with medicine one day.”
WHILE COMPLETING INTERNAL
While completing internal medicine training at the University of Alberta, Anmol witnessed the challenges ethnic Canadians face in the health care system. “It wasn’t designed for multiethnic Canada,” he says frankly. “I saw disparities in how various ethnicities were treated.”
ETHNIC CANADIANS FACE IN THE
The Kapoors moved to Winnipeg where Anmol completed his cardiology training at the University of Manitoba and Raman, now a new mother, had her own private dietician practice. They moved back to Calgary in 2010 and a year later Anmol opened Advanced Cardiology Consultants and Diagnostics (ACCD) in the city’s northeast, offering complete cardiopulmonary investigations. “Northeast Calgary is a very diverse community,” he explains. “It’s multi-ethnic, highly dense and has a growing disease burden. At that time there was no specialist cardiology clinic in the northeast. There was a need when it came to treating heart disease and diabetes.” Originally a respiratory medicine and cardiology clinic, as demand increased so too did the size and offerings of ACCD, which eventually moved into its current larger location on 32nd avenue NE. “We’ve added advanced diagnostic services and modalities,” Anmol says, “including radiology services, internal medicine and family medicine.” He recently opened a similar clinic in Medicine Hat, called albertamedical.ca, and south Calgary, and has plans to open one in Edmonton later this year. The south Calgary clinic also houses ANRA Health, a specialized clinic offering pharmacogenomic, genomic and epigenetic workup services, the first of its kind in Alberta. “These are advanced tools, especially in the fields of oncology, dermatology and rheumatology,” Anmol explains. “They help people discover the genetic part of their story.” After opening ACCD in 2011, Anmol and Raman (who had open heart surgery in 2000 for a congenital heart defect)

MEDICINE TRAINING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA, ANMOL WITNESSED THE CHALLENGES HEALTH CARE SYSTEM. “IT WASN’T DESIGNED FOR MULTIETHNIC CANADA,” HE SAYS FRANKLY. “I SAW DISPARITIES IN HOW VARIOUS ETHNICITIES WERE TREATED.” recognized a lack of access to heart health information, particularly in the South Asian community, and wanted to do something about it. “We said ‘Why don’t we host a walk?’,” Raman recounts of the origins of their DIL Walk Foundation (DIL means heart in Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu), a registered charity which began as a community walk and today holds a number of events throughout the year, including the annual DIL Walk and DIL Gala (a very popular gala event held annually the last five years). It also publishes a free multilingual magazine. DIL (Do It For Life) Walk centres on four key components to increase awareness of heart disease: Wellness, Access, Linkages and Knowledge (WALK). “The Wellness component comes from multiple health professionals - from physicians to specialists, physiotherapists to pharmacists - who donate their time to speak to the public about their area of expertise,” Raman explains. “Access means bringing these health professionals into the community, to connect one-onone with individuals. Linkages is about using pre-existing resources and linking them back to the community. And knowledge is fostered by our magazine which is written multilingually in layman terms, by health professionals.” Apart from the DIL Walk and DIL Gala, other events hosted by the foundation have been popular. In 2017, it hosted Western Canada’s largest hands-only CPR training, where 500 people were simultaneously trained.

One hundred per cent of the proceeds from DIL Walk events are returned to the community. They also fund the University of Calgary’s Heart Research Chair, established in collaboration with the DIL Walk Foundation, to focus on heart research. “What makes our foundation unique is that it’s 100 per cent volunteer run,” Raman notes. “And each year we give about 100 individuals in the community the opportunity to volunteer. It’s a great way to connect with the youth and help them gain experience.” Through the Foundation the Kapoors launched Charm Clinic, Alberta’s only working charitable heart failure clinic. “We have over 55,000 Albertans living with heart failure yet there was no clinic that provides heart failure care,” Anmol laments. “Today, we look after about 400 Albertans, primarily Calgarians, who suffer from heart failure disease, at no cost to them or the health care system.” The Charm Clinic offers complete diagnosis and treatment for heart failure. “It has saved the public system over 300 hospital visits,” Anmol adds. “At a cost of $30,000 to $40,000 per visit, that’s a significant savings.” The other major success born out of the Charm Clinic is CardiAI, a biotechnology company founded by Anmol three years ago. CardiAI develops platform-based medical diagnostics devices and software. “Many of our heart failure patients are just waiting to get worse and end up in the emergency room,” Anmol laments, “so we developed a mobile application to disrupt the traditional laboratory diagnostic process.” Typically, patients get their blood tested at the lab and must wait days for the results. “We wanted to find a way where we could test for the biomarkers for heart disease (NT-proBNP) from a finger prick instead,” Anmol continues. “This allows patients to obtain their results fast and at home.” The team at CardiAI - which includes molecular biologists, stem cell researchers, engineers and other scientists - had
been working towards the commercialization of point-of-care testing when COVID-19 hit. “We realized that our technologies could help solve puzzles with various infectious diseases,” he says. “We asked our team to determine how we can utilize our platforms and concepts to rapidly diagnose COVID-19. This is how CoviLamp came into existence.” Developed last year, CoviLamp is a hybrid, LAMP based PCR test for rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2 virus. It does away with the expensive and time-consuming nature of PCR testing while maintaining accuracy and sensitivity. “We’ve combined the highly accurate PCR based testing with the LAMP technology. So the reaction time is reduced from two hours to 20 minutes. We’ve created a new gold standard to clear the backlogs in testing and help increase capacity from the same machine.” CoviLamp is currently awaiting FDA and Health Canada approval, and is authorized to sell in the U.S. pending approval. “We’re hopeful that soon Albertans will be able to use our rapid COVID test,” Anmol offers. “We’re in conversation with labs in the U.S., and with companies in the Middle East, India and Africa.” RIGHT: RAMAN KAPOOR AND DR. He adds the technology is applicable for rapid testing other infectious diseases such as HIV, hepatitis, and ZiKa, as well as for testing for disease in livestock and fisheries. Similarly keen on helping others improve their health, Raman opened her own clinic in 2019. NEA (Nutrition Enhanced Aesthetics) Medical Aesthetic Clinic aims to empower women and help them with their selfconfidence, by focusing from the inside out. “NEA is the Hindi word for new,” Raman notes. “The clinic is about building capacity in the community. There was a real gap and the women that come here really had nowhere to go. There wasn’t a clinic that understood them from a personal, professional and cultural standpoint. NEA is that bridge that helped bring women, particularly form vulnerable communities such as ethnic minorities, to something that empowers them, gives them confidence and provides them health.” The staff at NEA are from ethnic backgrounds and multilingual, as is the majority of its clientele. Many treatments are offered, the most popular being truSculpt, a personalized muscle sculpting treatment. “We’re the only clinic in the province that has truSculpt body,” Raman says. “We have both the fat burning and the muscle building machines. And with my expertise in nutrition we have a truly holistic approach.” Skin conditions such as hyper pigmentation, melasma and acne, and medical issues including sleep apnea and snoring are also treated at NEA. The clinic uses the Fotona laser for several noninvasive medical treatments. Though forced to close for a time during the pandemic, NEA reopened with fervor last summer. “Our clients needed to take some time for themselves,” Raman observes. “There are a lot of mental health issues during COVID times and self-care can be a healing point to help people get through it.” A dream-team if there ever was one, Anmol and Raman Kapoor have discovered and met their callings with enthusiasm, dedication and compassion. Their clinics, innovations and charities have and will continue to positively impact the lives of thousands of Albertans for years to come.

Q
FIRST QUARTER REAL ESTATE MARKET PREDICTIONS FROM SAM COREA
Q: What are your expectations for the market for 2021? Home Sales Will Pick Up as the Vaccine is Rolled Out As the light at the end of the tunnel gets closer, buyers will become more confident. Just as we saw in the summer months of 2020, there will be a rush of activity once restrictions begin to lift. I expect this to increase once a vaccination plan is set into motion. Consumer confidence will return and many will want to take advantage of the low interest rates. We have learned that it is safe to buy and sell real estate with proper precautions. As always, we remain focused on the health and safety of our clientele and will continue to maintain these adaptations as we move forward.
The Volume of Properties on the Market Will Increase in the Spring As Albertans were encouraged to reduce their social contacts in late 2020 many sellers decided to take their homes off the market. This resulted in a smaller inventory of properties available for sale. Typically, the spring real estate market gets very busy with new listings, but I predict it will be even busier than past years as these properties from 2020 are re-listed. It is to a sellers advantage if there are fewer houses for sale since there is less competition and less downwards pressure on prices. My recommendation if you are planning to sell is to get your home on the market by February to take advantage of lower inventory and increased buyer activity.

“LEARNING” TO PIVOT AND THRIVE DURING A PANDEMIC HASKAYNE MBA PROGRAMS ADAPT TO COVID-19 AND POST-PANDEMIC REALITY
I
BY ERLYNN GOCOCO
n March 2020, the Government of Alberta declared a state of emergency due to the COVID-19 crisis. The pandemic changed the way people lived, worked and learned. Businesses and learning institutions across the country were forced to shut down temporarily and come up with various scenarios to accommodate this altered reality. On the education front, the pandemic caused chaos and post-secondary institutions had to quickly shift to online learning. This did not happen overnight, and instructors and students alike had to learn to adapt to a new way of teaching and learning. It was not an easy task and, for some, the transition to virtual platforms was somewhat challenging. But there is something to be said for perseverance. Fast-
forward nearly a year later and post-secondary institutions nationwide continue to adapt to the ever-changing COVID-19 guidelines and a post-pandemic world. Only now, this altered reality doesn’t seem so new anymore – a reference to the ‘new normal.’ The Haskayne School of Business (Haskayne) responded quickly to the pandemic by offering various channels of program delivery. While adhering to strict Alberta Health Services (AHS) guidelines, Haskayne continues to hold in-person classes for its Executive MBA program and for a small subset of MBA electives. Haskayne’s Director of MBA Programs Catherine Heggerud says, “These classes were chosen as they either had smaller enrollment numbers or

they moved in cohorts where we could easily maintain AHS health requirements to ensure student and faculty safety.” Heggerud adds that online learning accommodates the program’s larger classes and incoming daytime students. As the federal government has closed the borders, the online platform gives international students the opportunity to continue their learning. Over the last several months, students have learned to adapt and even appreciate the value of online learning. While the pandemic has proved to be challenging from an internal and external standpoint, Heggerud is proud that enrollment continues to be “very strong.” She adds, “For our incoming winter cohort, we are at full capacity and will likely admit more students than we would have traditionally.” Manager of Cash Management, Corporate Treasury at TC Energy, Lavender Murray completed Haskayne’s MBA program in 2001 with a major in finance and accounting. She leveraged her MBA to obtain a Chartered Professional Accountant designation, which helped progress her career to her current role. “The building blocks I worked on while obtaining my MBA facilitated my achievement of increasingly complex and senior roles.” Murray understands that working remotely has been a challenge for many, but also sees the value in virtual sessions and how it is beneficial in the workforce. “One of the biggest pivots to working remotely was the requirement to lead a team of analysts in a new way. I learned the value of regular, consistent meetings with each of my team members.” She adds, “Sometimes in-person sessions are harder to fit into your schedule so virtual sessions provide more flexibility for students.” In addition to its traditional MBA program, Haskayne is seeing healthy enrollment for its Accelerated MBA program, targeting those with an undergraduate degree in a business discipline. Designed specifically for graduates of a four-year business program from a recognized/accredited Canadian or U.S. post-secondary institution, the Accelerated MBA is aimed at early- to mid-career professionals looking to enhance their business acumen, critical thinking skills and leadership capacity to achieve their professional goals. The program can be completed in as little as 12 months.
HEGGERUD ADDS THAT ONLINE LEARNING ACCOMMODATES THE PROGRAM’S LARGER CLASSES AND INCOMING DAYTIME STUDENTS. Students enrolled in the Accelerated MBA take 11 courses, as opposed to 20 courses in the regular MBA option. The program saves students both time and money. Launched in May 2019, Haskayne’s Master of Management Program (MMgmt) has also seen “exponential growth” since its inception. New or recent graduates in a non-business field with limited work experience would benefit from the MMgmt program, which helps those with strong technical skills in their chosen field wanting to learn how to apply those skills in a business setting. The intensive 10-month program allows students to enhance their previous degrees with business knowledge and skills and quickly begin their careers. Despite the pandemic, Haskayne also launched two new MBA specializations this past fall; Business Intelligence and Data Analytics and Management Analytics. A specialization within an MBA degree provides the opportunity for students to focus on a specific functional or industry area. Some choose to pursue a specialization to either consolidate their prior experience or to complement their existing skill set. Heggerud says, “These specializations allow students to focus in the emerging field of data science.” On top of it all, the Haskayne, in conjunction with the Faculty of Science and the Cumming School of Medicine, launched the Master of Data Science and Analytics with

applications now being accepted for fall 2021. One of the key areas of focus with this flexible program will be Health Data Science and Biostatistics. This unique graduate degree combines technical knowledge and a hands-on learning experience that will prepare students to take their career to new heights in today’s data-driven world. Heggerud explains that the program is designed in a laddering-format, which means students can take up to six years to complete it. Understanding that the pandemic has not been easy for anyone, Heggerud is optimistic. “I think COVID-19 has put more of an emphasis on using technology. While students were likely not happy about shifting to Zoom classes, the skills learned in these virtual classrooms will be super beneficial to their futures.”
Having completed Haskayne’s traditional MBA program in 2013, Caitlin The says students should see the pandemic as an opportunity rather than a challenge. “When I was enrolled in the MBA program many years ago, one of the benefits was being able to interact and meet with other students. Now that most programs are being delivered online due to the pandemic, students may not be able to experience the same type of collaborative community. They will, however, have an opportunity to take advantage of today’s technology, and apply that in the workforce. Technology is infused in everything that we do today and will continue to further integrate itself as we move forward. When you take into account the future state of living, in my mind, virtual learning should be considered a benefit, whether it be professional or personal, not a deterrent.” Haskayne’s efforts and innovative approach to teaching and learning has not gone unnoticed. Heggerud proudly says, “The Haskayne MBA was recently recognized for its commitment to a better world when it ranked in the 2020 Top 40 Better World MBA Rankings. Haskayne’s Strategic Plan focuses on three priorities: innovative research, unparalleled learning opportunities and meaningful community engagement. We are executing on that plan and looking forward to expanding our reach with the 2022 opening of Mathison Hall.” A recent Harvard Business Review study focused on remote learning revealed that “Individuals, teams and entire workforces can perform well while being entirely distributed—and they have.” Heggerud agrees and adds, “I think the skills our students are acquiring today will translate well in their future careers.”

Do you remember your first day of high school, or your first day at a new job? What about becoming a parent, or perhaps starting your own company? Thinking back, there were likely common threads of intimidation, nerves and a fear of the unknown. What would you tell your younger self to better equip you to handle the uncertainty? Junior Achievement (JA) programs are focused on financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship and have been developed to foster important life skills that extend beyond these concepts. Our programs are designed with a specific set of competencies in mind to promote students’ confidence and success. Fostering high levels of self-efficacy in young people is the goal of JA and the underpinning of our theory of change. Self-efficacy is the idea that people who believe they will succeed are far more likely than others to actually succeed. This is a crucial characteristic to develop in today’s youth, and we have some good news: research shows that self-efficacy can be taught. It is developed in two primary ways - mastering skills through hands-on learning and experiences (JA programming) and through observing the success of others who have high levels of self-efficacy (JA volunteers in the classroom). The World Economic Forum estimates that half of the jobs that young people will hold in the future do not even exist yet. How’s that for nerve-wracking? This is why we are preparing southern Alberta youth to confront and conquer this inevitable unknown with confidence in their skills and abilities. We are empowering young people to transform intimidation into motivation and to become active agents in their lives. RE-DEFINING SENIOR LIVING // SENIOR LIVING
Re-defining
SENIOR LIVING
PEOPLE ARE LIVING LONGER
BY JOHN HARDY
W
hile many aspects of Calgary life can and will be blamed on the COVID curse, the focus and the concept of “senior living” were already being redefined, sometimes drastically and sometimes subtly. Long before the potent public health and safety impact of the pandemic – causing isolation, choked-off family and social contact, particularly among the high-risk senior cohort, changes to Calgary senior living lifestyle wants and needs were already happening. Now that there seems to be light at the end of Calgary’s long and gloomy COVID tunnel, the changes in senior living not only underscore the importance of the contemporary “active living” concept but emphasize a broad focus on mental and physical health as vital aspects of senior living. For various reasons and in many ways, Calgary is proving to be an innovative pioneer when it comes to re-defining senior living. The choices and the options for Calgary seniors are transformational. “Pre-COVID, senior living was already changing,” explains the personable Careen Chrusch, director of Marketing and Communications with Calgary’s United Active Living (Garrison Green and Fish Creek) communities. “People are living longer and that’s something that wasn’t necessarily anticipated when many senior residences were established years ago. One of the most significant changes is the shift
50

from telling seniors what and how they should live in their final years, to a resident-driven experience where seniors tell us what they need, and we work to accomplish that.” Before the harsh and cruel broadsides of social distancing and mandatory isolation, traditionally (even though it has become a bit of an overused cliché) some seniors resist conventional (and clichéd) senior living due to lingering fear of losing independence. With today’s innovative senior living facilities, amenities and programs, it no longer such a stark trade-off. Besides, clinicians and aging experts explain that views on aging are closely linked with quality of life issues – from physical symptoms like pain and chronic conditions to emotional well-being like happiness and absence of stress and anxiety. There is also caution that living alone can often cause loneliness and lead to depression and aging more quickly. “Senior living has significantly changed over the past five or so years,” says Alisa Audia, general manager of The Edward in Calgary. “There are more options and a stronger focus on the overall lifestyle offered. There is a new focus on upgrading the resident experience to appeal to the baby boomer demographic. Baby boomers demand a broader range of amenities and luxuries than past generations. They want a higher degree of comfort, style and choice.” According to Chrusch, there is documented consensus that older adults want to continue to engage in meaningful,
RE-DEFINING SENIOR LIVING // SENIOR LIVING
active, and engaging lives, even after they have decided to live in an older adult community. Historically there has been a perception that once a person decided to move into an older adult community that was it, it was the end of their life. “We now see that their desire is focused on how they want to live. And we are happy to oblige in providing residents with engaging, active lifestyles, while also enjoying the benefits of community living,” she says. Senior living professionals agree that the phrase “there will be some changes made” is already stale. There have already been changes made and it’s now up to senior living residences to adjust to the changes. “Changing consumer preferences are evident in the new generation of seniors who expect to remain in their homes longer, and expect a different kind of continuing care system than the current generation of elderly,” notes
Julie Arnold at The Brenda Strafford Foundation (BSF). “Particularly when it comes to ‘baby boomers,’ who want to be more involved in decisions that impact them and are typically more educated, have access to more information and resources, and have a greater comfort with technology than depression/war-era seniors. “This comes with different expectations around choice, maintaining independence, and involvement in decision-making today, in comparison to senior living in the past.” She emphasizes that innovation is a vital aspect of senior living. One example is last year’s introduction of the BSF’s exciting ‘Pursuit of a Lifetime’ program, designed to inspire BSF residents to continue dreaming and pursuing their passions and goals. Like the popular ‘Make a Wish’ concept, twice a year ‘Pursuit of a Lifetime’ accepts applications to fulfill lifelong dreams – meeting the Calgary Flames, swimming with dolphins, reuniting with overseas family

THE JOURNEY OF LIFE My father, Al Westman, told me long ago that life changes every 5 years. If you think of yourself at the age of 25 to 30 and the stage of life you were in, think about what you were doing in your career, and starting a family, compared to what you were doing at 40–45 years old. Again, where you were in your career and stage of life and the age of your children. And now, if you think of yourself, in between the age of 60–65, which is where I am now, you start to reminisce a little. You start thinking about your health and happiness. How many good summers do I have left? And you start to do the math. For me, I am trying to get the most I can out of life and I am not leaving any stone unturned in my journey. I have plans with family, trips panned and goals set—some of them are quite ambitious. I have been very fortunate in the home building business and as a second generation to boot. People say that I am so lucky and I have been in some ways lucky, from the perspective that everything I have ever liked, we have incorporated into every build form that I have ever built. And it has been successful, from our most moderate-type homes all the way to the ultimate of luxury. Westman Village incorporates every build form except for

Single Family living. Westman Village has all of the concierge services and amenities that I have ever experienced. Many of them inspired from resort living in Palm Desert. I literally designed the bar at Alvin’s for myself and my friends to enjoy now and later in life. All of the retailers have been hand-selected not to fill up the commercial spaces, but to act as another amenity onsite for everything you could ever think of. Specifically the 4 restaurants. When you think of family and friends, one of the most common images that comes to mind is sharing a meal. I know growing up, I was fortunate enough to have Sunday dinners with the family every Sunday until my parents passed away. We wanted to give our residents a place to continue this tradition with their own families, whether it is at Chairman’s Steakhouse or Alvin’s Jazz Club or one of our other restaurant partners. Now I am extremely proud of saying Vision Complete at Westman Village and with that, we launch our last and final building of Odyssey Adult Living. Before I talk about Odyssey, I have to say again, everything that we have built into the community is because this is a place where I would personally live. Now onto Odyssey! The building location of Odyssey within Westman Village is unparalleled; views, amenities, beautiful landscaped areas with fountains, backing

directly onto a park with amazing lake views from just about all sides. Odyssey is the epitome of concierge services and conveniences unlike anything else. I am going to say the unsayable, and am going to start with the end in mind. If so desired, this is the ultimate private health care. You might say, “oh it’s a seniors’ building…” and there are connotations that come with that. As I would say, a “you have arrived” building. The services available to you, the a la carte healthcare that is available to you, the private driving service, the connectivity, the 40,000 sq. ft. amenity centre, all accessed by skywalk! Let’s not forget the 2-storey waterslide (a pull strategy to get my grandkids to come and visit). Restaurants you can go to without having to go outside. My Dad would say, now this is back-up–this is my last home and I want everything, damnit, I have worked for it and I am going to enjoy this stage of my life every single day. And depending what age you are at, is it in 10 years or 20 years plus? You decide. In the meantime, you enter in to an extremely luxurious front foyer, with a hotel-inspired feeling. Each of our homes at Odyssey are large, single-level floorplans. The highest specifications and finishes, oversized balconies and storage lockers for each home. From the hallways to the ceiling heights, you will feel like you are at a high-end resort walking through the hallways. Some might say Westman Village doesn’t have everything; there isn’t a gas station, but we do have access to electric car chargers in the parkade. Every home at Odyssey has a view of the park, the lake or the landscaped fountains. With all the amenities and all the Fit and FinishTM, you have arrived. There is nothing like it anywhere that I know of. VISION COMPLETE!

or learning an instrument. (Applications for the next Pursuit of a Lifetime are open until the end of February.) Contemporary senior living specialists are anticipating and adjusting to the lifestyle trends and the wants, needs and expectations of today’s (and tomorrow’s) seniors. It’s documented fact that seniors are resistant to senior living because they fear they will lose what they value: the desire for the independence of staying in their own homes, although stats and surveys show that there comes a time when they are unable. Various studies also show that living alone can often cause loneliness that leads to depression and aging more quickly. Healthcare is an unavoidable factor for contemporary seniors. Stats undisputedly track that although boomers are living longer, once they arrive in senior care they will be sicker than previous generations. With more Alzheimer’s, asthma, rising obesity rates and more diabetes diagnoses, senior living will include a higher than ever demand for personal healthcare. Today’s senior residents want design elements that help maintain independence and privacy with sometimes taken for granted features, like in-unit laundry and kitchens, private entrances and places for family and friends to gather. And despite the stereotypes about seniors adjusting to technology, the trends and numbers show that that technology will still play an increasingly significant role in how prospective senior living residents manage their day-to-day activities, healthcare and social engagement. The trends also underscore that boomers demand and expect environments that are technologically enabled. Mostly because they currently have more access to the outside world through technology than previous generations, they will want to keep that access when they move into a senior living community. “We have pioneered the operational idea that ‘assisted living’ is now available to all residents throughout our community regardless of their care needs,” says Al Boileau, executive director of Calgary’s Journey Club. “Unlike traditional facilities where residents with care needs are required to move to different areas of the residence in
order to receive the level of care they require, we are a true, age-in-place community where care is provided in-suite. We also focus on socialization from a resident driven perspective. We don’t offer typical bingo (unless residents want it) and our Inspired Living Program is designed resident-first, everything from lectures and talks, to exercise and movement to arts and entertainment.” Calgary’s senior living experts admit that COVID has taken its toll. “There is no doubt that our residents have felt the impact the pandemic, especially during periods of time when they have not been able to see family and friends and due to safety protocols, our programming and services have had to be paused,” Chrusch says. “Some of the things our residents enjoy the most about living in our communities is the opportunity to live a social, active and engaged life and like most of us during last year, they have really missed how they were used to living.” According to Julie Arnold, “The global pandemic has undoubtedly impacted the outlook and lifestyles of Calgary’s active seniors. But the availability of the vaccine in Canada, and here in Alberta, certainly offers hope for a return to some degree of normalcy and interpersonal connection which is especially welcome for residents of continuing care.” The Edward’s Alisa Audia emphasizes that the COVID impact on the outlook of Calgary seniors is undeniable. “It has taught us all to appreciate the small things, such as a good meal, fresh air and a warm smile. Seniors specifically are looking for a safe place to call home and miss being part of a larger community. It has also shown some seniors that living at home alone may not be the ideal option.” ABOVE: THE POOL AT CALGARY’S JOURNEY CLUB.

ontinued fiscal and monetary responses around the world to the COVID-19 pandemic, combined with little inflation and low interest rates, have all the makings to support a long-term bull market, say experts. Brian Belski, chief investment strategist with BMO Capital Markets, says environments like the one we’ve entered in 2021 have historically supported continued stock market gains. “We see no reason why 2021 will be any different,” says Belski, who co-authored BMO’s Investment Strategy 2021 Market Outlook with Nicholas Roccanova, Ryan Bohren and Andrew Birstingl. “Yes, valuations appear stretched at first glance, but they also need to be considered within the context of historically low interest rates and little inflation, ingredients that are likely to persist throughout 2021 and beyond.”
58
FEBRUARY 2021 // BUSINESS IN CALGARY // BUSINESSINCALGARY.COM
Belski says it’s reasonable to expect market valuations to sustain or even expand slightly from its current level. In addition, he anticipates corporate earnings growth will recover sharply from pandemic lows – particularly during the second half of 2021 since much of the damage was lockdown specific and not necessarily related to companies themselves. “In fact, aside from the global financial crisis, 2020 represented the swiftest quarter-over-quarter earnings collapse for the S&P 500 where index EPS plummeted nearly 50% during the first quarter,” he says. “Thus, we anticipate that 2021 has the potential to be one of the best years ever in terms of earnings growth – something we believe will also help to push stock prices higher.” Liz Lunney, head of portfolio management at ATB Wealth, agrees there is room to run in the equity bull market

through 2021 and into 2022, with the end of the cycle to be determined by central bank interest rate policy and inflation expectations. “Low and stable interest rates, combined with government support programs, suggest a continuation of strength into 2021, especially with the anticipated recovery in corporate earnings,” she says. More specifically, Lunney says low and stable interest rates in North America and developed economies around the world will be positive for equity markets – especially when combined with a global economic recovery. “Fixed-income markets and government bonds, in particular, will be more challenged,” she says. “That said, there will be selective opportunities in the fixedincome space and bonds will continue to play an important role in balancing risk in client portfolios.” Lunney notes in some respects, 2020 was a tale of two markets in Canada. The S&P/TSX was up 3.8 per cent year-to-date at the end of November. That said, the broad market fell 2.3 per cent if we were to strip out Shopify, up 4.5 per cent, and the mining sector (gold in particular), up 1.6 per cent. “Looking ahead to 2021, a shift even at the margin in shopping behaviours and excess liquidity are expected to support companies like Shopify and the mining sector. Conditions are also setting up which should be supportive of the Canadian banking and energy sectors,” she says. While cautiously bullish, Michael Wood, region head for the Prairie region at TD Wealth Private Wealth Management, expects that investors should still prepare for a long road ahead. “We’re obviously not through the pandemic. There’s still a lot of uncertainty,” he says, also noting the transition of political power in the United States. “Having said that, we are definitely bullish on the economic recovery globally as well as in North America … It’s just going to be a matter of time.” Like Lunney, Wood is high on equities for at least the next 12 to 18 months – particularly due to interest rates that he predicts will be close to zero for the next couple of years. “For those looking for investment opportunities, there are not a lot of alternatives outside of equities. The equity markets are really where everyone is going to be looking,” he says. Pedro Antunes, chief economist for the Conference Board of Canada, says while the central bank has indicated short-term interest rates will remain largely untouched through to 2023, longer-term yields might tell a different story. “The bank doesn’t have as much control over those, and there’s a sense that as the economy picks up … that we are going to see more upward pressure on

longer-term bonds. We’re already starting to see some implications of that happening,” he says. Antunes says while many now have a handle on how deep the pandemic has cut, there are still many questions about the long-term repercussions. In the near term, he credits stronger oil prices in providing a timely boost to the Canadian economy in 2021.
“Oil prices have already started to pick up, and whether we agree with it or not, our economy is still very dependent on resources like oil. That tends to drive a stronger currency,” says Antunes, who believes the Loonie will plateau around $0.80 US. “Also, when we see oil prices pick up, that tends to produce better profitability in some of Canada’s important sectors, which tends to boost equity markets and so on.”
REV YOUR SAVINGS ENGINES
RESEARCH INDICATES ROOM TO GROW FOR TFSA, RRSP CONTRIBUTIONS Despite a global pandemic, many Canadians continue to utilize tax-free savings accounts and registered retirement savings plans as part of their respective investment strategies. Yet new data shows many are not taking full advantage of these savings vehicles. According to BMO’s annual TFSA survey released late last year, more than half (53 per cent) of Canadians say they contributed the amount they expected in 2020 – only slightly down from 2019 (58 per cent). A little over twothirds (68 per cent) of Canadians now say they have a TFSA. On average, Canadians are holding $30,921 in their TFSAs – up over nine per cent from 2019. Regionally, those in the Prairies hold the least in their TFSAs on average at $24,495, while those in B.C. hold the most at $34,880. The BMO survey also noted a gap for investors with knowing what can be included in a TFSA. Nearly a quarter (24 per cent) of Canadians are not aware what investments are eligible. Only half (49 per cent) of Canadians are aware that a TFSA account can hold both cash and at least one other type of investment. Investors in Atlantic Canada have the highest proportion of cash in their TFSAs at 47 per cent, followed by Quebec and Alberta at 40 per cent. “When investing, it’s important to make sure that the money being invested is working for you,” says Nicole Ow, head of term investments with BMO. “TFSAs can be a great vehicle to
60
FEBRUARY 2021 // BUSINESS IN CALGARY // BUSINESSINCALGARY.COM
grow savings for short or long-term goals, but it’s important to have the money that is contributed working for the investor.” RRSP activity, meanwhile, is mixed. According to Statistics Canada, the total number of people putting money into RRSPs fell 4.6 per cent from 2000 to 2018 – a drop to six million from 6.3 million. Many experts point to the introduction of TFSAs in 2009 and rising housing prices behind declining use of RRSPs. Twenty-nine per cent of tax filers contributed to an RRSP in 2000, compared with 22 per cent in 2018. RRSP data for the 2019 tax year has yet to be released. Yet for those who are contributing, the amount they are holding is increasing. According to BMO, Canadians who already contributed to their RRSP say they added $6,409 for the 2019 tax year – up from $5,247 in 2018. The average amounts held in RRSPs in Alberta has increased by 22 per cent from $17,000 to $18,000 between 2018 and 2019. “It’s encouraging to see Canadians across the country emphasizing long-term investing and boosting their planned contributions,” says Robert Armstrong, director of multiasset solutions with BMO Global Asset Management. “While Canadians plan to contribute to their RRSPs, we advise individuals to monitor their progress and make regular contributions to avoid stress associated with overcontributing penalties and meeting the RRSP deadline.”

April Tax Solutions Encourages Clients to “Stop Overpaying Your Taxes” by Rennay Craats
M
ike April’s senior yearbook predicted that he would become an accountant. While that didn’t exactly come true, he pursued a lot of different avenues that led him to working in accounting every day. More than 10 years ago, April entered the field by guiding small businesses so they don’t pay too much in taxes. April Tax Solutions officially launched in 2015 and since then has reduced clients’ tax burdens to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars. April Tax Solutions | Celebrating 6 Years 65
“Collaboration often yields better results,” Mike April, April Tax Solutions.
Mike April started out working in a completely different area. As an electronics technician for the Canadian Air Force, he was stationed across Canada and in Germany working on CF104s, CF18s, Dash 8s, Hercules and Sea King helicopters. It was rewarding work but as he and his wife started a family, the work took him away from home too much. The Aprils decided that he would retire from the military and transition to the private sector. They chose Calgary as their Canadian base and April began working for NORTEL Networks. “I decided on Calgary in 1996 because it seemed like a big hub. It had a global feel, even more than Toronto, Montreal, or Vancouver,” says Mike April, owner and president of April Tax Solutions. In 2001 he was ready for a change outside of electronics and started working in something completely different: the housing industry. Along with renovating and flipping houses for resale, April also dealt in foreclosures. “I helped people out of foreclosures and that’s where I found the passion for helping people. In foreclosures, bad things happen to good people. You have two incomes supporting a mortgage and something happens to take one of them out of the workplace, and it was a matter of what can I do to help them survive this without having to move out of the house and uprooting the family?” April says. Mike April’s motivation to establish April Tax Solutions was born both from this desire to help people and his frustration with the tax resources available. As an entrepreneur he experienced firsthand the detrimental effects of trusting in mediocre accountants. “I paid good money for accountants to give me guidance, and they really fell down on that,” he says. “I deconstructed what had happened and I could see that I could have done this or that, and I probably overpaid the government $20,000.” April didn’t want that for any other business owner. And the more he talked with people, the more he realized that many others also blindly trusted what their accountants said and paid whatever the return told them to. They looked to April for advice and information, and the next chapter of his life began. April Tax Solutions | Celebrating 6 Years | 2
He started looking at people’s businesses along with the personal factors that play into someone’s tax situation to help reduce their taxes. Life events, such as buying a first home, the birth of a child, a marriage, and the addition of an investment or recreational property, can affect how an accountant structures a tax filing. Also, if a client is planning one of these events, April Tax Solution’s tax specialists can ensure the client is doing all that is required ahead of time so there are no surprises later. April would also provide a second look at previous filings from other firms that saw clients paying thousands of dollars. He often found missed opportunities for claims and deductions that resulted in refunds. April Tax Solutions once discovered that a client didn’t owe the $130,000 tax bill and appealed to the CRA to amend the filing. Mike April found his calling, and with April Tax Solutions he brought together his desire to help people with his love of numbers. His firm is a forward-looking all-inclusive tax service that offers everything from annual corporate tax filing preparation to bookkeeping to legal structuring of a company. While the firm does not offer personal tax return services, the team will bundle a corporate client’s personal and business taxes to ensure they have a complete picture when determining the best path to lessening their tax liability. April has a stable of talented, knowledgeable tax professionals and bookkeepers working from their home offices who are managed by the three full-time staff in the office. Their success comes from focusing on the client’s timelines and using accountants who can accommodate quick turnarounds. At April Tax Solutions, customers’ needs are the priority and April will never have a file sit on someone’s desk as deadlines loom. He keeps abreast of government deadlines to prevent clients from unnecessarily paying late penalties and interest.

million in service-based companies, and include consultants and coaches as well as ecommerce companies. “I’m pleased to service all areas, but I still have a soft spot for the business owner that is getting started. I want them to start right,” he says. The Calgary Chamber of Commerce named Mike April the 2012 Volunteer of the Year for his contribution to small business development, and he plans to continue in that pursuit with his latest endeavour. To help companies get started right, Mike April is looking at ways to expand to reach more business people than his rolodex of local clients. He is developing an online video series that will provide a wide range of information for new and inexperienced business owners. For a flat fee, business owners will be able to access a collection of concise videos on a variety of topics including how to understand financial statements, reasons to incorporate, ways to best structure GST, income splitting and leveraging leasing versus buying. Each video will give current, straightforward information in digestible servings to prevent users from getting overwhelmed. The series launches at the end of February and Mike April hopes that it will give business owners coast-to-coast the same advantages as the local businesspeople who walk through his door for help. “People in Nova Scotia or Manitoba or Ontario can buy it and have all that knowledge at their fingertips,” he says. “At the end of the day I want business owners not to learn accounting or bookkeeping. I want them to know they have my support so they can go out and focus on what they do—their craft.” April Tax Solutions has helped Calgary business owners navigate the world of taxes with the expertise of its team of accountants, bookkeepers, and consultants. Mike April and his team strive to live up to the firm’s tag line. They tell clients, both in person and through online video resources, to “Stop Overpaying Your Taxes” and they work hard to ensure clients do just that.

ere we are still COVID-conscious after almost a year of forced lockdown in our personal as well as business lives. Who could have imagined not being able to have a beer with a buddy, never mind a permissible holiday in Hawaii? Yet, we survive and have found new interests to keep us amused. One thing I’ve enjoyed is seeing inside the homes of TV reporters as they work remotely. I always get right up to the screen to try and see what books they have on their shelves. It’s not surprising that on American stations they have their latest trending political book facing the camera.
Good to hear that so many people are back to reading books. Although public libraries have been closed, I’m delighted to see so many Little Free Libraries springing up across the city. Promoted by a non-profit group to encourage neighbourhood book exchanges, some of the bookcases are creative design wonders. Maybe someone will try and capture images of the best as a tribute.
Later this year we will say goodbye to a very hard working and friendly UK Consul General Caroline Saunders who has completed an active term here. Calgary has a total of eight permanent missions -compared to Edmonton’s one - which is testimony to the importance of this city’s business community. We also have 53 active honorary consuls in the corps, organized with the help of tireless Judith Romanchuk who has been serving Finland for the past 40 years. Congratulations to the longest serving honorary consul in Canada.
It’s interesting to hear that some of the things we enjoyed years ago are making a comeback in this digital age. Script is not dead if you look at the number of fancy notebooks on the shelves of stationary stores, and there has been a marked increase in the number of my friends who buy fountain pens as gifts. Another is the appreciation of vinyl records.
And speaking of books, I do hope we will be able browse at book fairs sometime later this year.
This city must have one of the largest and most active consular corps in the country, made up of Consul Generals and honorary consuls. Consul Generals are appointed to serve terms of three to four years, a period in which they are their government’s representatives in assisting citizens of their own country and facilitating others in travel and trade matters while promoting friendship between the two countries.
