What’s most important to the dedicated team of more than 1,400 staff is offering a wide range of housing and care options for seniors in order to create caring communities through leadership, quality services, innovative programs and incredible people.
n 1944, five Albertans set out to raise $10,000 to purchase a property on which to support 19 people unable to live on their own due to poor health, disability or family situation. Little did they know that this first location in 1945, called Bethany Home, would evolve into a world-class organization dedicated to care and housing for seniors and people with disabilities. Today, 70 years later, Bethany has grown to include seven care centres and 13 independent living housing buildings in southern Alberta and provides care to around 2,000 residents.
“Bethany is proud to have reached its 70 th anniversary and though we reflect back, we remain focused on the next 70 years. As Alberta’s seniors population grows, we will continue to respond to their needs,” says McCue.
“We were founded by individuals who had a strong faith background and really felt a need to serve seniors,” says Bethany’s president and CEO Jennifer McCue. “At year 70, we still have that passion. We are faith-based, although we serve people of all faiths and beliefs. What was important to our founders is important to us today.”
Bethany proudly provides seniors with holistic care and housing, covering the gamut of healthcare options. While not every location offers all levels of support, with centres in Calgary, Airdrie, Cochrane, Didsbury, Red Deer and Sylvan Lake, the organization spans the continuum of seniors’ housing requirements.

Bethany caters to seniors who can see to their own needs and live independently to those requiring long-term care due to medical issues with all points in between. Bethany is also dedicated to tackling the challenges associated with dementia, offering a variety of programs aimed at supporting families and residents with managing the condition.

“We provide a variety of housing and care options, ranging from independent living to supportive living, continuing care, specialized dementia care and community services,” says Nancy Hughes, vice president and COO at Bethany. Regardless of the level of care required, each resident is treated respectfully and individually. Every resident needs something different to achieve his or her highest quality of life, and Bethany is dedicated to providing excellence in care and meeting those specific needs.
A comfortable and home-like environment along with fun activities and outings can go a long way toward healing and happiness, and Bethany strives to make every space an enjoyable experience. Since the beginning, Bethany has benefited from volunteers and today it calls on its more than 1,000 volunteers to further enhance residents’ lives. They are an integral part of the organization, whether they are playing music, helping with gardening, taking residents on community outings, leading classes or helping at mealtimes. Through these volunteers, Bethany is able to provide residents with more meaningful interactions and activities and contribute to what makes the organization unique: its focus on holistic health, philosophy of care and its faith, which is at the centre of all that it does.

Sundance on the Green is a 55-plus life lease community in south Calgary.
Being a faith-based organization, Bethany not only cares for clients’ physical needs but also their spiritual health. For decades, Bethany has included pastoral care in its mandate. “Our Christian roots have influenced and shaped our holistic approach to caring for seniors. We are a faith-based organization and our chaplains minister to residents and families representing a wide variety of faiths and denominations. We understand and respect that many spiritual practices are relationship based. We provide our residents with the resources they desire to honour their spiritual beliefs,” says McCue. And beliefs are varied. There are 24 primary languages spoken or understood and 40 religious affiliations represented within the long-term care residents at Bethany locations. There is no lack of conviction and passion at Bethany from either staff or residents – but what can be challenging is finding the resources to operate. Each year Bethany receives and spends $90 million to create caring communities. Alberta Health Services provides operational funding to pay for nursing and therapeutic care for residents while the residents pay an accommodation fee that is set by

This facility will house 180 long-term care and supportive living residents in a community already housing more than 400 independent seniors. “Our vision is that seniors will be able to move through the continuum – to live independently and
when they require more support we’ll be able to support them in that community,” says McCue. With this model seniors can stay within the community as they get older, taking advantage of the various levels of support as they find they need them while maintaining their sense of home in the community.
