Canada Steamship Lines And Niagara Host Society Reveal Partnership And Exciting Plans For The Torch Relay Program Of The Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games

iagara 2022’s Torch Relay program, presented by Canada Steamship Lines (CSL), will travel an initial leg on the CSL Welland along the St. Lawrence Seaway, before disembarking at the Welland Canal, where the torch will begin its journey across the Niagara Region October 6, 2021 (Niagara, Ont.) — On Wednesday, while standing in front of the Trillium Class bulk carrier CSL Welland at Lock 3, the Niagara 2022 Host Society, Canada Games Council, and Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) proudly unveiled their exciting plan for the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games Torch Relay. With CSL acting as the pro-
gram’s presenting sponsor, Niagara 2022’s Torch Relay will take a unique path from previous Games by travelling on the water — paying tribute to the historical significance of water as a means of transportation across Canada and through Niagara. In keeping true with a time-honoured Canada Games tradition, the Roly McLenahan Torch’s journey will begin in late spring 2022 with a lighting ceremony in Ottawa, before heading to Montreal, where it will embark on the CSL Welland at St. Lambert Lock and make its way to the Niagara Region via the St. Lawrence Seaway. Following its trek on water, the torch will then disembark from the ship at one of the world’s greatest engineering marvels, the Welland Canal, prior to visiting each of Niagara’s twelve municipalities (see below schedule) in the lead up to the 2022 Canada Games. After its final leg of the land program is complete, the Roly McLenahan Torch will finally make its way to the Meridian

Centre on August 6, 2022 for the Opening Ceremony, where it will ignite the Canada Games cauldron and officially commence the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games. “We can’t wait to bring to life our Niagara 2022 Torch Relay program and this unique vision that was only made possible thanks to CSL,” said Doug Hamilton, Board Chair of the Niagara 2022 Host Society. “Next summer’s Niagara 2022 Torch Relay will represent an invitation to our country and local Niagara community to join in the journey of the Games as we prepare for the arrival of the next generation of Canadian athletes to the Niagara Region for Canada’s largest multi-sport event.” “CSL has been navigating the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes for over 100 years and this is truly a first for us. We are
honoured that one of our ships will be the first torch bearing vessel in the history of the Canada Games, bringing energy and excitement along our waterways,” added Louis Martel, President and Chief Executive Officer of The CSL Group. “We look forward to carrying this iconic symbol that brings hope, unity and determination to our young athletes and communities.” “The Canada Games spark greatness across Canada by showcasing the best of our next generation of athletes and leaders,” said Dan Wilcock, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canada Games Council. “The Torch Relay provides that initial spark, which will inspire the nation en route to the 2022 Canada Summer Games, while paying homage to the historic waterways of Ontario and the Niagara Region.” BL.

The CSL Welland, which will transport the Roly McLenahan Torch from Montreal to Niagara, is a 36,364 DWT Trillium Class bulk carrier currently operating on biodiesel made from a non-edible by-product of soybean oil. The vessel is part of a program to test second generation biofuel on eight CSL ships over the course of the 2021 navigation season – a first for the Great Lakes shipping industry. CSL Welland is also one the ships that has logged the most engine hours on biodiesel in the world.

BUSINESS PLAN
HOW DO I USE A BUSINESS PLAN TO HELP MY IDEA OR BUSINESS SUCCEED?
Welcome to the third of three parts on business plans and business planning. In this, our last article on the subject, we will look at how utilizing the Business Planning Methodology can significantly improve your ability, as a consultant, executive, director, or manager, to better diagnose problems, and create a SMART action plan to take them on.
Rahi S. Tajzadeh
20
T
he Business Planning Methodology uses the logical argument structure of a properly crafted business plan in several ways:
• To identify gaps in knowledge of the industry or market(s) of the busine • To identify gaps in knowledge of the industry or market(s) of the business or organization • To identify gaps in opportunities spotted in the industry, market(s), externally overall, and internally in the marketing plan, operations plan, and financial plan • To identify gaps or errors in logical argument creation, cogency, and validation of premises • To identify weaknesses in the sources of important data or information • To identify best practices in the industry, and with respect to the market(s) • To identify key metrics to better measure success, shortcomings, or outright failure in various areas such as the business model, marketing plan, operations plan, financial plan, and the execution of the latter three • To identify areas that require change • To identify weaknesses in marketing, operations, finance, strategy development, or leadership • To diagnose problems internally, externally, and a combination of both • To better predict future challenges such as strategy adjustments, cash flows, product and service life cycles that may be ending, changing market demographics or cohorts, etc. The Business Planning Methodology has one more use that is a culmination of all of the above points: • To create a specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely (SMART) plan to take the organization or business from where it is today, to a more competitive and better position tomorrow. Whether it is updating critical information and meaningful knowledge, or solving problems regardless of their origins, the business planning methodology can be the most robust and useful tool a consultant or executive uses to help their client or organization become more competitive, less risk-laden, and more profitable.

KNOWLEDGE
T
he first step is to gauge the Knowledge of the executives, be it Industry information, Market information, internal Operations or Marketing information, or any other information deemed necessary for executives to make informed decisions.
your role is more akin to the private investigator who already has access to the company and its information. Your role is to ask questions, identify where each point of information belongs within a business plan, and populate a blank template as you go.
The easiest way to do this is to follow the Industry Analysis of a comprehensive business plan, using the headings as starting points for queries. The goals of the investigation and industry analysis are the same: to use reliable sources of quality information to determine what opportunities the industry presents, built on a foundation of thorough understanding of the industry, competition and major players, trends, technologies, supply and value chains, etc.
Gaps in knowledge will present themselves, especially when you start confirming the information from third-party, or unbiased and reliable sources. Biases that affect the company’s or organization’s information will present themselves, and can be easily handled individually.
Once the gaps in knowledge are identified and addresses, you can move on to the next major step in using the Business Planning Methodology as a diagnostic or conSo, rather than starting from sulting tool: Analysis. scratch as an entrepreneur,
22
T
his is a critical step in that the information gathered, the knowledge gained, and the insights derived are no longer an area of concern. That means there can only be issues with strategy or execution. Analyzing strategy starts with a study of what the organization or company determines to be useful information, or information that drives decision making. This is why analyzing best practices is critical; they help determine what information should or could be used to
determine strategy, direction, and vision. If there are discrepancies in what you as a consultant, executive, director, manager, or analyst feel should be important information versus that which has been used historically, then you need to determine why that is, and what may need to be done to reconcile the differences. Often this discrepancy is a result of outdated information, poor sources of unreliable information, and too many ‘gut feeling’-driven decisions. Once you are satisfied that the information be-
ing utilized to drive strategy is sound, reliable, and of meaning, then you can look at the conclusions that the organization or company have come to. This is an exercise in careful critical thinking. Understanding the relationship between premises and their conclusions, mapping them visually, and discussing findings that support or refute said conclusions is key to spotting errors in logic; something that must be done in an open, transparent, inclusive environment with key executives, directors, and/or managers who gather, analyze, and use information to drive their conclusions, and thus, strategies.
people claim to embrace change, but few will back their opinions with actions, and most are more comfortable with familiar failure than unfamiliar change for the better.
Lastly, you will look at the culmination of conclusions reached through careful analyses of meaningful information, and how they paint a broader picture of opportunities, strategic vision, and competitive advantage(s). Does the current strategy support what the opportunities the overall picture of the industry, market, and internal organization’s capabilities present? If not, what needs to change and why? making it easier to engage in change; you are oiling the machine, and making things smoother, easier, and more agile.
