National Conference & AGM 2016 /// We Are One Habitat
WE ARE ONE HABITAT.
T
hese are powerful words. They are both emotional and visceral. And, more importantly, they are the building blocks of our commitment to one another and the future of this movement. They form the perfect alchemy which enables us to create transformational change and serve more families. If we truly desire to have a profound impact on the families we serve and on future generations, then these words will be at the core of everything we do. In fact, we must recite them like a mantra on a daily basis, and measure our future plans against our commitment to this philosophy: WE ARE ONE HABITAT.
MARK RODGERS President & Chief Executive Officer, HFH Canada
Chair, National Board of Directors, HFH Canada
Our future as an organization is dependent on our answers to these questions….and so is that of Canadian families! I look forward to seeing each of you at this year’s National Conference and AGM. Always Thinking Families First,
As we look to the future of this organization we must ask ourselves vital questions, such as: ■ Are we committed to radically and innovatively increasing our building productivity to serve more families?
O
DON BJORNSON
■ Are we committed to mobilizing leaders who look at the whole business of Habitat and not simply our own communities? ■ Are we committed to epically expanding our profile and engagement in order to compel Canadians to support our cause? ■ Are we committed to significantly growing the relevance of our social enterprise in order to support our mission delivery?
n behalf of the National Board of Directors, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Habitat for Humanity Canada’s 2016 National Conference and Annual General Meeting. The theme of this year’s conference is “We Are One Habitat”. This simple phrase has come to represent what we aspire to and what will best position us to help build a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. Our yearly conference is our opportunity to come together to renew old acquaintances, meet new people in the organization, celebrate our successes, learn from each other and, perhaps most important, to share our passion for, and our commitment to the cause. When we come together as “One Habitat”, we energize each other and become a stronger, more cohesive and more productive organization. The conference is packed full of informative workshops, thought provoking speakers, plenty of time for socializing and, of course, the always stimulating Annual General Meeting.
Habitat for Humanity Canada is very grateful to Karen Redman, her team and the Board of Directors at Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region for hosting us this year including hosting the Welcome Tour and Dinner. Thank you for attending this year’s conference. Thank you for all that you do for our partner families. We look forward to our time together in Waterloo.
A world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.

he AcaBellas are the University of Waterloo’s first (and currently only) all-female a cappella group hailing from Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Founded in 2009 by just seven girls with a dream, the group was the first a cappella ensemble at Waterloo to truly incorporate group collaboration into their musicality and dance into their performances. Today the Bellas have grown to as many as 21 members who love to sing, rap, dance, and beatbox while wowing the crowd with their unique arrangements and high energy. MEANING OF HOME CONTEST WINNER John Latosinsky
J
ohn Latosinsky, is a Grade 6 student from Lester B. Pearson School for the Arts in London, ON. John’s essay earned him the top prize in the 2015 Meaning of Home Contest which included an iPad, a pizza party for his class, $1,000 donation to his school and the opportunity to direct a $50,000 grant from Genworth Canada to a Habitat build of his choice. After researching the many Habitat Affiliates and build locations across the country, John asked that the grant be directed toward the construction of a new Habitat home in London, Ontario, and to Habitat Canada’s Indigenous Housing Program in Southern Ontario.

Home is a place, like no other place can compare. It gives a wonderful feeling that everybody should share. […]
You learn even more things there that you never knew. You learn what is false, and what is true. […]
The memories you make there will never fade. There is almost never a time there when you are afraid. […]
That sad truth is one that I hate to say. There are people around who have no place to stay. […]
We have let it rest for much too long. Let’s give them a place where they feel they belong. Excerpt from John Latosinsky’s essay, winner of the 2015 Meaning of Home Contest.

Band
T
he Lulus Band, consisting of 4 studio musicians, was the mainstay house band for the famous, but now defunct, Lulus Roadhouse in Kitchener, Ontario. From 1984 until 2000, Lulus Roadhouse was the largest nightclub in the world, hosting the world’s greatest entertainers who played to revelers and partiers in excess of 5000 five nights a week. The Lulus Band was charged with opening for all famous entertainers and keeping the party charged for the 16 years the club existed. Although Lulus Roadhouse is gone, the Lulus Band has kept the tradition going all these years playing to conventions, festivals and parties in Southern Ontario. See for yourself the reason why this band continues to draw crowds after so many years on stage!

It Can’t be all New! Repair and Rehab to Complement your Build Program Habitat has specialized in building new construction of affordable homeownership solutions but as Canada’s existing housing stock continues to deteriorate and as Canadians age their ability to remain in their home becomes more challenging. Habitat can be a valuable agency of renewal for both the aging in place and rehabilitating existing properties, but it will take an intentional effort to build capacity and establish programs to offer solutions to this growing need. All are welcome, especially Construction Personnel, to participate in this interactive workshop of sharing “good practices” in both ReNew It and rehabilitation (renovation) projects that have taken place across the country. Attendees will gain a new perspective on the opportunities of expanding their homebuilding program to include successful and sustainable repair and rehab projects.

Recap with MCAP - A Review of our Mortgage Servicing Partnership
We recently partnered with Nielsen on a national branding study to gain insight on the perceptions of Canadians’ views about Habitat for Humanity in Canada. Nielsen will present these findings in comparison to other organizations in Canada. They will also present an overview of the donor and volunteer landscape. Who are your donors? How should we market to them? What medium works best to reach them? Nielsen will present findings from its research to help you answer these questions. Participants will then be broken into smaller groups to discuss branding, fundraising, and volunteering, led by Nielsen.

MCAP Service Corporation has been offering mortgage servicing to Habitat for Humanity Affiliates in Canada for many years now. The agreement we have ensures that all homeowners receive consistent and efficient service and that administrative tasks to do with mortgage payments are reduced at an Affiliate. This workshop will cover all aspects of MCAP mortgage servicing— from completing the New Client Data Sheet used to set-up a mortgage through to a guided tour of information available on the secure portal of COMET and PREVIEW.
A Cross-Country H.R. Checkup During this interactive workshop we will discuss the employment trends we are seeing in the millennial generation, review emerging issues in Canada’s employment laws, understand the clauses you must have in your employment contracts to avoid ambiguity down the road, and learn how to mitigate your Board’s fiduciary responsibility.

Better Together: Creating and Managing an Integrated Fundraising Program
One of the biggest challenges today is getting “staff” on-board in an organization to work with and support volunteers. Volunteers will not stay or come back if they don’t feel welcome and comfortable. How often have you heard or said yourself: “I worked really hard to find the right volunteer for that role/program only to find out that they left shortly after starting. I found out that staff treated them poorly!” Healthy staff-volunteer relations do not just happen. What does it take to build a healthy culture in your organization? What does it take to build a team where paid and unpaid people work together to meet the goals of the organization? These are just a few of the questions addressed in this practical and interactive workshop. Practical solutions that you can implement the very next day will be provided!

Communicating in Plain Language Plain language is easy to read, understand, and use. On many different levels, and perhaps especially with Habitat Homeowners, we have very important information to relay and sometimes we make it anything but easily understood. This workshop will remind you of some key principles of plain language, including the beauty of brevity. Lots of examples and practice will help you to get your point across. And you’ll also learn who to blame, and why, when your words don’t work! (Hint: It’s not always your fault.)

Navigating the Minefield Achieving and maintaining compliance with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requirements can be particularly complicated for charities. The rules regarding GST/HST obligations and entitlements, and donation receipting for charitable gifts are key areas where wellmeaning charities can wander off-course and find themselves in a minefield of complexity. In this workshop you will learn how to successfully navigate these requirements.

Fundraising has become more complicated over the last 20 years. We’ve seen increasing levels of specialization as professionals focus on areas like major gifts, corporate partnerships, and annual giving. The challenge is that donors don’t recognize—or care about—the way that fundraising is organized. They aren’t interested in specialization. They simply want a relationship with Habitat for Humanity because they believe in your mission and see you as agents of positive change. In this workshop you will learn how to create a development process that honours your donors and creates a simple and effective way of creating and upgrading relationships with them. You will come away with specific tactics to help you integrate your various fundraising specialties into one dynamic, successful, relationship-building program.

The Mark of a Leader Great leaders and organizations understand the power of stories and they use them. Stories touch us on all of our levels, so they cause us to change our behaviour and we remember them. That’s why all of the world’s religions are built on stories. And it’s why great companies use stories to define who they are and what they stand for. Attend this workshop to hear some of those stories and talk about how we can leverage our stories to drive leadership. www.markofaleader.com

COR (Certificate of Recognition) has been around for a number of years in Western Canada, but has only recently been adopted by Provincial and Territorial Construction Safety Associations across the country as the National standard for safety certification. Affiliate management, Board members, Construction Personnel and Safety Coordinators are invited to hear from John. Receive an overview of COR, steps toward becoming COR compliant, review of the process, and how to properly submit an Internal Audit; with a longer term goal of certification/maintenance. Also learn about the benefits of Habitat adopting COR as a National standard. We will hear from a number of Affiliates who have either certified under COR or have recently become COR compliant. This is a valuable opportunity to contribute to the broader discussion of a National safety standard for Habitat and to map out your plan to reach a higher standard of safety management locally.

We talk with people all the time, and yet we sometimes feel like we don’t really know people at all. In community benefit organizations like Habitat For Humanity, our ability to maximize people’s volunteer (or employment) contributions arise from the kinds of conversations we have with them. Specifically, the kind of conversations where managers are able to learn what individuals want to accomplish with us, what they would like to learn from us, what they have to contribute to our team / program / mission and where their strengths are as well as what attitudes they have towards the work, towards their colleagues, towards themselves. This information can be invaluable for managers of staff teams or volunteers, Board members or volunteers themselves. Through group work, one-to-one activity, conversation and reflection, participants in this workshop will learn ways to listen to others, so they understand what people wish to achieve with us, what their strengths are and what values / attitudes guide their actions.

An Inside Look into Goodwill Industries
Goodwill Industries is a non-profit social enterprise that provides work opportunities, skills development, and employee and family strengthening for those who face barriers such as disability or social disadvantage. The aim is to advance individuals, families, and communities toward economic self-sufficiency and prosperity. Goodwill creates jobs, and unites both caring and business to develop individual and community potential on a number of enterprise platforms such as donated goods, thrift retail, recycling, logistics, food and hospitality, commercial services, and light manufacturing. Goodwill’s commitment goes beyond providing a job and a paycheque. They provide benefits and have a strong program emphasis on training, access to education, career advancement, poverty reduction, and social inclusion. In this workshop we will learn all about one of North America’s most successful thrift store operations, what makes their stores successful, and what learnings are transferable to our Affiliate and ReStore operations?

The Affordable Home of the Future! Take a journey into the future to explore new and innovative solutions to affordable housing design. Jamie Shipley from CMHC, set the stage by focusing on the importance of building design to ensure affordability over the long term. Through integrated design and appropriate material selection, Jamie will demonstrate how buildings can be resource efficient, durable, functional and adaptable to our changing needs. By considering the time continuum of a building at the design stage, affordable housing of all shapes and sizes could be functional for over a century. We will then be introduced to two architects who will walk us through some unique and exciting affordable housing design considerations though both conceptual and recently constructed housing projects. This session is sure to stretch our imaginations, but at the same time offer Habitat Affiliates valuable information to influence future project design as we all work diligently toward building attractive, affordable and lasting affordable housing solutions for families in need.
