Zoho exec allays fears that artificial intelligence will affect IT-BPM industry, replace human workers

A

By Roderick L. Abad | Contributor

RTIFICIAL intelligence (AI) has continuously created a buzz, drawing mixed reactions across industries worldwide.

‘AInvasion’

DESPITE mounting concerns over AI, it has undeniably expanded its reach on Philippine shores. In fact, it’s “already being adopted by the outsourcing sector” in the country, according to Mathew. He cited as example a client, with more than 90 virtual assistants for customers across four continents, which uses Zoho People to automate processes and simplify the daily management of its remote workforce.

“AI will not replace Filipino talents in the outsourcing industry, but rather reinforce their abilities and improve their efficiency.“—Gibu Mathew, vice president and general manager for Asia-Pacific at Zoho Corp.

This platform enables the company’s Human Resources department to keep track of each cyber assistant’s work anniversary and birthday. This automation helps the unit celebrate these milestones, enhance employee morale, and improve workforce solidarity. Zoho People, likewise, provides a comprehensive system to handle employee attendance, track leaves, and automate attendance calculations. This channel streamlines the process and guarantees accurate record-keeping. It also lessens administrative workload and empowers workers to manage their HR-related activities via a self-service portal, where employees can access and update their personal information, view pay stubs, request leave, and perform other self-service tasks. In addition to process automation, Zoho People also aids the organization track attrition rates. By collecting and analyzing crucial data, it can determine which teams necessitate assistance and take appropriate measures to mitigate attrition.

Not worrisome

CHANGE is imminent in the international labor market. This holds true as the Future of Jobs Report 2023 of the World Economic Forum showed that 44 percent of workers’ core skills will become different in the next five years. On the other hand, the IBM Institute of Business Value study on the implications of AI in the global skills gap shows that its evolution, not to mention that of auto-

Even if its impact on the information technology-business process management (IT-BPM) sector in the Philippines cannot be predicted with certainty, its significant disruptive effect on the country’s global leadership in this field is far-fetched. “While AI, like other groundbreaking technologies, brings a new set of challenges to users, it is likely to bring more positives than negatives to the industry,” Gibu Mathew, vice president and general manager for Asia-Pacific at Zoho Corp., told the BusinessMirror in an e-mail interview. AI enhances efficiency, accuracy and productivity in various business-process outsourcing (BPO) functions. Solutions powered by chatbots, data analytics tools, and process automation are already being used by many industry players. These tools help streamline operations, mitigate errors, and improve overall performance. Iterations of such have led to the emergence of the co-called generative AI, which is deemed greatly beneficial for outsourcing. For instance, processes can be enhanced to be more efficient. Also, it provides opportunities for better data analytics and insights and improved customer support engagement. What’s more, there are avenues to ensure quality control and compliance, as well as allow language translation—all leading to better outcomes for businesses and their customers. “The adoption of AI technology can enhance the Philippines’ position in the industry. By integrating AI into their operations, companies can improve their service offerings, increase productivity, and provide more innovative solutions to clients,” he said.

mation, will disrupt 85 million jobs between 2020 and 2025 and create 97 million new job roles. Amid fears that it will replace human workers or render their roles obsolete, Mathew gave assurances that local BPO workers need not worry. He affirmed: “AI will not replace Filipino talents in the outsourcing industry, but rather reinforce their abilities and improve their efficiency.” Globally, Filipinos are known to have a competitive edge over their foreign counterparts due to sought-after outsourcing skills that are not easy to substitute with or duplicate by AI. These include strong English communication skills and familiarity with the sensibilities of Western customers. AI technology can handle routine and repetitive tasks, but still lacks the human touch and nuanced understanding that is critical in serving clients face-to-face.

“Filipinos excel in providing personalized and empathetic customer experiences, which are difficult for AI to replicate,” said the top executive.

Sustaining growth, staying relevant

THERE’S no stopping AI being a big business game-changer. In fact, it is expected to unlock an astounding $16 trillion in value by 2030. PwC said that it can contribute up to $92 billion to the Philippine economy by 2030. Generative AI, in particular, can open $79.3 billion in productive capacity for the country, Department of Trade and Industry Undersecretary Rafaelita Aldaba previously reported. Such rosy figures give a hint that the sun will continue to shine on the local IT-BPM industry. In view of this, Filipino talents must continue to upskill to remain competitive in the global outsourcing arena.

As AI technology can automate many routine and repetitive tasks and improve efficiency and productivity, IT-BPM outfits need to focus more on “judgment-intensive” outsourcing services. These include roles in financial planning and analysis, after-sales support, and supply chain management. “The shift towards an AI-powered workforce demands a focus on enhancing their skills to handle more complex and value-added roles that require human creativity, empathy and critical thinking. This includes developing expertise in areas such as data analytics, problem-solving, and strategic decision-making,” Mathew said. “By embracing AI technology as a tool to enhance their capabilities, Filipino talents can elevate their value proposition to clients and offer a more comprehensive range of services. Rather than being threatened by AI, Filipinos can leverage it to their

advantage, ensuring their continued dominance in the outsourcing industry,” he added. To sustain the country’s position in the global IT-BPM industry, the government, for its part, must strengthen the academe’s role in upskilling and retooling the local workforce. Through comprehensive curriculum reviews and realignment of existing IT-related courses at the university and high-school levels, the government can ensure that students are equipped with the necessary soft skills (such as communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking) and technical expertise needed for the everchanging digital landscape and outsourcing sector. Mathew also advised government policymakers to support academia by crafting policies, plans, and programs crucial to the indusContinued on A2

Xi can’t use 2015 playbook to calm China markets, investors say

C

By Bloomberg News

HINA’S efforts to arrest a $7-trillion stock market rout are evoking memories from 2015, when Beijing took drastic steps to stem a crash. This time, investors say, the problems are much more entrenched. Authorities have snapped into crisis mode to support China’s tumbling markets, taking aim at short-sellers and freeing up cash for banks, while state funds are boosting purchases. Signaling the growing alarm, China abruptly ousted its market chief Yi Huiman on Wednesday, rolling out another hallmark of the near decade-old blueprint to boost stocks. “The shuffle demonstrates that the political impulse remains to tighten administrative controls rather than address fundamental problems facing the economy,” Eurasia Group analysts wrote in a note after the surprise shake-up. Rather than helping, they wrote, “it entrenches the sense of malaise and weighs on confidence.” The move came as President Xi Jinping was set to be briefed by regulators on financial markets, prompting a knee-jerk rally on bets of more forceful moves to halt a rout that earlier this week had outstripped a $6.8-trillion selloff that began in mid-2015. Back then, Xi personally ordered an unprecedented campaign to protect the interests of small and mid-level investors. While some of

the measures taken this year mirror those from the previous rout, authorities in Beijing haven’t yet responded with the same overall force. The central bank has held off making major liquidity pledges, and Xi’s economic team hasn’t pulled the trigger on a proposed 2 trillion yuan ($278 billion) rescue package. Even if policymakers do ramp up the rescue mission, investors say the old playbook won’t be enough to satisfy questions over the long-term health of China’s slowing economy, which is being dogged by a property crisis, deflation and a shrinking population.

‘Inflection point’

“THE real reason why this time is different is the narrative for economic growth has changed,” said Fang Rui, fund manager at Shanghai WuSheng Investment Management Partnership. “We are now at an inflection point unseen in the past decades.” The market turmoil is also generating veiled criticism of Xi’s government among the public and investors, after years of policy crackdowns and inflexible Covid curbs tanked business sentiment.

The imminent Lunar New Year break is adding pressure to stop the rout, as the nation’s 200 million mom-and-pop investors prepare to huddle with family, potentially spreading the gloom.

Evolving landscape

WHILE the 2015 crash also coincided with an economic slowdown and a housing market slump, China today is facing a changed policy landscape. As Xi tries to reorient the economy toward high-quality growth and away from the debt-

fueled property market, top leaders have signaled they won’t lean on big stimulus. Last time, then-Premier Li Keqiang was the most visible figure taking charge of the response. Following his return from a European trip in July that year, the government unleashed a stabilization fund, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) pledged to provide ample funding to state-backed investors, and different arms of the financial universe were mobilized to support markets. Xi’s public comments didn’t come until September, months into the rout.

‘Special meeting’

THIS time around, supportive statements from Premier Li Qiang,

Vice Premier He Lifeng and central bank governor Pan Gongsheng have failed to have a lasting impact. Now some investors are waiting on word from Xi, who has consolidated power in recent years and diminished the sway of China’s No. 2 official by increasing his own influence over economic policy. “The fact a special meeting may have been called could indicate things have gotten so bad work needs to be reported to the top,” said Xu Dawei, fund manager at Jintong Private Fund Management in Beijing. If a briefing with regulators is confirmed, he added, “I’d say with confidence this is the pivot point.” The situation requires Xi to call for fiscal reform, according to

Alicia Garcia Herrero, chief AsiaPacific economist at Natixis SA, who noted the central bank isn’t taking the same leading role it did in 2015. Xi has weakened the PBOC in recent years, handing some of its powers to a revamped financial regulator. If the central bank does enact looser monetary policy, it’ll also need to step up capital controls, she said. “If not, every single yuan they put in circulation will leave. So I’m expecting very, very strict capital controls in China, and this is very bad news for investors because they are locked in.” Problems nearly a decade ago were also heavily driven by shadowfinanced margin trading. That resulted in a quick, violent tumble as leveraged investors were forced to sell. This slump has spanned three years, as a disappointing post-pandemic reopening keeps up losses sparked by Covid disruptions. “Market interventions cannot work over time unless underlying drivers are addressed,” said Brock Silvers, managing director at private equity firm Kaiyuan Capital. “Recent policies all seem to be treating the symptoms rather than the illness.” While overall Chinese stocks ended the week with strong gains, some analysts still want more forceful policy to secure the turnaround. Xin-Yao Ng, an investment director for Asian equities at abrdn, said he was skeptical of a sustainable sentiment bump without a big stimulus, citing a “perception gap” in how top leaders and market participants view China’s economy. “Investors think the economy is really weak and don’t even believe the GDP figures,” he said. “Mr. Xi and his cabinet might still be relatively comfortable about the pace of economic growth.”

try. This includes providing funding for research and development, creating partnerships between academia and industry, and promoting initiatives focused on innovation and technology adoption. “Collaboration between the industry, academia and the government is crucial. This means establishing close partnerships and communication channels to identify emerging trends, skill requirements, and industry needs. By working together, they can ensure that the workforce remains relevant and adaptable to the advancements brought by AI,” he stressed.

Talent outsourcing provider to harness AI for expansion

EY Global Delivery Services (GDS) aims to expand its talent pool in the Philippines by 50 percent over the next two to three years. This growth is part of their strategy to offer innovative and strategic business solutions to EY member companies and clients both locally and internationally. Andrea Catte, EY GDS Philippines tax co-leader and EY Asia Pacific and EY Global Compliance and Reporting (GCR) lead, revealed that they will focus on upskilling and re-skilling their 5,000-plus team members at present and expand their total headcount to 7,500 by 2026 or 2027, in both their Manila and Cebu centers. “The key focus for FY [fiscal year] 2024 is the adaptability and growing the skill sets and the services that we’re offering. So as the market moves and the skill sets of employees move, we want to enable them to grow their careers and provide more high-quality services, high-level services, end-to-end services as well in those areas for our market teams,” she said in a recent media briefing in Makati City. Established locally in September 2015, EY GDS provides tax, assurance, strategy and transactions, and consulting services to EY mem-

Moreover, it works across finance, business development, technology, talent, procurement and risk management functions to help EY teams operate as efficiently and effectively as possible. “The EY member-firm here in the Philippines is SGV,” EY GDS Consulting Leader and Asia Pacific SAP Leader Raymond Garret Go said of their client that outsources talents from them. “So their focus is the local market. But more than 95 percent of what we do is really for the world.” At present, assurance is the biggest business line of EY GDS Philippines at 50 percent, servicing mostly the America and AsPac markets; consulting accounts for roughly 20 to 25 percent; as tax is “a bit smaller” serving Oceania, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. As for its community impact, the company has been a partner since 2022 of local universities in Cebu—Cebu Institute of Technology and University of San Jose Recoletos—to offer ServiceNow elective subject, designed by the GDS Philippines Consulting team. Following the opening of their

second domestic hub there in October 2023, he disclosed their intention to tie up with more academic institutions to offer certain courses and help train the “next generation” of talents. According to Go, the company also plans to leverage emerging technologies, such as AI, automation and data analytics for better service delivery. It launched a $1.4-billion investment in enabling AI from a solution standpoint, and also in terms of capacitating the teams with in-depth AI courses for engineers, programmers and data scientists; applied AI for their people in the tax or assurance line of business; as well as responsible AI. Moving forward, Go mentioned plans to introduce new services, particularly in the tech space and customer experience, along with expanding into business consulting areas such as supply chain transformation and finance transformation. Additionally, Catte expressed their intent to collaborate with other EY GDS locations in the region and extend their service offerings to include tax services in India and the United States.

Manila-Subic-Osaka shipping route eyed By Henry Empeño

S

UBIC BAY FREEPORT—A trade route connecting the ports of Subic, Manila and Osaka in Japan might be in the offing following the visit here of Osaka Ports and Harbors Bureau officials and the increased focus by the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) on maritime-related business. SBMA Chairman and Administrator Eduardo Jose L. Aliño said the Subic agency is now “exploring cooperation possibilities in port-related business” with the Port of Osaka to tap the potentials of both ports for increased cargo traffic. Aliño added that the two ports are now pursuing the development of a ManilaSubic-Osaka route with major shipping lines to increase trade between the Philippines and Japan. Japan, which is one of the country’s top trading partners, imported some $11.09 billion worth of goods from the Philippines and exported back $13.09 billion in 2022, according to the United Nations Comtrade database on international trade. Aliño said during the Osaka Ports & Harbors Bureau mission here that a ManilaSubic-Osaka route for major shipping lines could further increase trade between the two countries. “The Philippines is among the world’s fastest-growing economies with an average annual growth rate of 6 to 7 percent per year. After diving into a slump in the growth of its Gross Domestic Product in 2022 due to Covid, we can now hope, dream, and expect to marvel at a new dawn, and proudly become an indispensable and crucial part in the financial and industrial development of international trade,” said Aliño, who chaired the S.T.A.R. Group of Companies, a major player in integrated supply chain services and port operations, before he was named to the SBMA post last month.

Osaka Ports and Harbors Bureau Director-General Maruyama Junya, meanwhile, said their visit to Subic was an opportunity to share information on port development, port management, and logistics, and to promote mutual exchanges. “Osaka Port has developed as an international trade port with industrial and financial development in the Kansai area. We are working actively on further development through improving port facilities and carrying out port sales,” he said. “In 2023, we have decided to focus on the Philippines, one of the Southeast Asian countries that has been developing remarkably against a backdrop of high economic growth in recent years, and organized a port sales team with Kobe-Osaka International Port Corporation and other transport companies,” Junya added. Junya arrived in Subic with a delegation from port and harbor transportation business operators such as Sumitomo Warehouse Co., Tatsumi Shokai Co., Ltd., Nissin Corp., Konoike Transport Co., Ltd., Sankyu Inc., Shosen Koun Co., Ltd., Nippon Express Co., Ltd., and Mitsubishi Logistics Corp. Aliño, SBMA Senior Deputy Administrator (SDA) for Port Operations Ronnie Yambao, SDA for Business and Investment Renato Lee III, Maritime Business Manager Karen Magno, and Seaport Department Officer-in-Charge Michael Lazaro provided an extensive briefing to Junya and company on Thursday. Yambao said that in 2023, Subic’s cargo volume has reached to 6.4 million metric tons with lumber, tires and motor vehicles as the top commodities handled by Subic for both import and export. “By expanding our network and developing this new shipping route, we are also providing more economic opportunities that will increase our trade and cargo volume between our ports,” he added.

sustained expansion in bank lending to non-financial private corporations and households,” BSP said. “Net claims on the central government also rose by 14.2 percent from 17.3 percent with the decline in the deposits of the National Government with the BSP,” it added. The data also showed net foreign assets (NFA) in peso terms rose by 4.3 percent year-on-year in December from 3.2 percent in November. The BSP’s NFA grew by 7.4 percent, while the NFA of banks contracted on account of lower interbank loans receivable. “BSP will continue to ensure that domestic liquidity conditions remain consistent with the prevailing stance of monetary

policy, in keeping with its price and financial stability objectives,” BSP said. Meanwhile, the BSP said the outstanding loans of universal and commercial banks (U/ KBs) also grew by 7 percent YoY in December 2023, the same rate of increase as in November 2023. On a month-on-month seasonally adjusted basis, outstanding universal and commercial bank loans, net of RRPs (reverse repurchase ratio), increased by 0.3 percent. Outstanding loans to residents, net of RRPs, increased 7.3 percent in December 2023 from 7.4 percent in the previous month. Meanwhile, BSP said outstanding loans to non-residents decreased by 2.8 percent in December from a decline of 5 percent in

November. Loans for production activities rose by 5.5 percent in December from 5.7 percent in November, driven largely by the expansion in lending to key industries, such as real estate activities at 10.9 percent. These activities also included wholesale and retail trade, and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles at 7.2 percent and electricity, gas, steam, and air-conditioning supply at 6.2 percent. Consumer loans to residents increased by 23.5 percent in December from 23.6 percent in November, due to the increase in credit card loans, motor vehicle loans and salary-based general purpose consumption loans.

Cebu business leaders pin high hopes on sufficient power supply

for SSI, it will have a Circulating Fluidized Bed technology that is also used in Units 1 and 2 to minimize the harmful coal dust emissions. That’s how Aboitiz “being a responsible corporate citizen, will surely use green technology to keep the coal clean,” CCCI’s Co cited. According to NGCP Assistant Vice President and Head for Public Affairs Atty. Cynthia Perez-Alabanza, “All roads lead to Cebu when we talk about power consumption in the Visayas.” Referring to the province’s repeated peak demand last May and December 2023, she pointed out that “now, with the economy fully reopening, we are witnessing a substantial surge in power requirements. All the more Cebu needs more power plants.” For Abner G. Bardoquillo, NGCP network operations senior manager for Visayas systems operations, these plants will be helpful in order for Cebu not to rely on supplies from neighboring islands given the investments flow and population growth.

T

HE expansion in bank lending to nonfinancial corporations and households boosted the country’s domestic liquidity in December 2023, according to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP). BSP said based on preliminary data, domestic liquidity (M3) grew by 5.9 percent year-on-year (YoY) to about P17.4 trillion in December 2023 from 7 percent in November 2023. The data showed domestic claims grew by 9 percent YoY in December 2023 from 9.7 percent in the previous month. “Claims on the private sector grew by 8.5 percent from 8.3 percent with the

C

EBU business leaders count on ample power supply and baseload reserves from new power plant facilities to help sustain the province’s rapid growth and development. In an interview, Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) incoming president Mark Ynoc emphasized how vital energy is as the country’s economy bounces back post-pandemic, “especially in preparation for the anticipated arrival of investments and increase in population growth.” Data showed that Cebu posted a growth rate of 6.9 percent in 2022 led by Metro Cebu and its highly urbanized cities of Lapu-Lapu (13.2 percent), Mandaue (9 percent), and Cebu City (8.4 percent). Pre-pandemic, the National Economic and Development Authority identified Cebu’s potential for new investments in heavy and extractive industries, including shipbuilding and allied industries, automotive and parts

manufacturing, aerospace parts, resourcebased industries, and fabricated metals. “When there is a pressing need for power, then we definitely need additional generation capacity and infrastructure,” Ynoc said. However, there’s fear of power shortages during the Western Visayas blackouts that had cost Iloilo alone P5.7 billion in economic losses. This was exacerbated by the Panay Island power outages, when the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) projected a decline of some 178 megawatts (MW) in the power reserves of Central Philippines. With an available generating capacity of 2,411 MW and a system peak demand of 2,117 MW, Visayas had a margin of only 269 MW as power reserves in January 26—the thinnest compared to Luzon’s 3,608 MW and Mindanao’s 802 MW—according to NGCP. Business leaders in Cebu were hopeful for

new power plants coming on grid with the Department of Energy’s (DOE) issuance last December 2023 of Certificates of Endorsement for 21 projects for system impact study (SSI)—a prerequisite for the Energy Regulation Commission’s approval to operate a new power generation plant. “More power supply is always better,” said Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) President Charles Kenneth Co. Meanwhile, former MCCI president Steven Yu noted that “while we are scaling up on our RE [renewable energy] generation capacity, this will help stabilize our power supply versus demand and avoid costly blackouts. The negative environmental effects are being outweighed by the positive impact to the economy and other offsetting carbon reduction measures.” Proof of which is Therma Visayas Inc.’s (TVI) 169 MW coal plant expansion in Toledo City. Military drills in PHL unaffected by focus of DND chief greets Chinoys Washington on Ukraine, Gaza–US general Happy Chinese New Year

C

OMBAT exercises between the United States and the Philippines involving thousands of forces each year will not be affected by America’s focus on the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, a US general said Thursday. The Biden administration has been strengthening an arc of military alliances in the Indo-Pacific region to build deterrence and to better counter China, including in any future confrontation over Taiwan and the disputed South China Sea. But there have been concerns that the war in Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas conflict could hamper America’s pivot to Asia and the Pacific and divert military resources intended for the region. “Certainly, it does not affect our presence,” Maj. Gen. Marcus

Evans, commanding general of the US Army’s 25th Infantry Division, told The Associated Press in an interview late Thursday when asked to comment on those concerns. “If anything, it drives an increased sense of urgency to focus on these partnerships that we’ve developed decades ago and it’s our responsibility to continue to build on these unique training opportunities.,” said Evans, who has 12,000 soldiers under his command. Evans, who is based in Hawaii, was in Manila for talks with his

Philippine Army counterparts ahead of large-scale combat maneuvers between the US and Philippine forces. The annual drills include the “ Sa l a k n ib,” wh ic h a re a r myto-army drills first held in the country in 2016, and the larger “Balikatan,” a Tagalog term for shoulder-to-shoulder, which was joined by more than 17,600 military personnel in April of 2023 in their largest combat exercises in decades. Some of last year’s Balikatan exercises were held in Philippine coastal areas across the sea from the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea. The expanded combat exercises involving US forces have been criticized by China as a threat to regional unity and peace. Evans said the scope of this year’s Salaknib and Balikatan exercises, which would include jungle training, “remains consistent with last year.” After the exercises, a contingent from a Hawaii-based combat readiness center would take part for the

Girl, baby boy rescued alive from Davao de Oro slide debris; death toll rises to 15, 109 missing By Claudeth Mocon-Ciriaco & Manuel T. Cayon

T

HE Philippine Nationa l Red Cross (PRC) reported that a two-month-old boy and a three-year-old girl were rescued from a landfill site Friday in Barangay Masar, Maco, Davao de Oro, two days following a massive landslide that struck the village Tuesday night. PRC Rescue Team leader Van Solinap said the two were immediately taken to the Doctors Community Hospital in Mawab by the PRC Emergency Medical Services team. “I am proud of you for your hard work and persistence to recover every missing person from the landslide. Thank you, Van and team, for bringing hope amid despair and showing that PRC is always first, always ready, always there,” PRC Chairman and CEO Richard

Gordon said as he expressed joy over the development. Gordon congratulated the PRC Rescue Team led by Solinap for their “untiring commitment to help.” Gordon said that the PRC team would continuously work to help the people in the area. For her part, Secretary-General Dr. Gwen Pang said the PRC Team has been on the ground even before the landslide. “We thank the team for their unequalled service,” said Dr. Pang. Reports from Davao de Oro said rescuers dug up a child alive from the debris, raising hopes for more survivors underneath the pile of soil and rocks. “A miraculous little girl survived the landslide hit Zone 1, Barangay Masara, Maco. This baby was ‘captured’ this morning during an ongoing search, rescue, and retrieval operation by our first responders. So far, this

child’s condition is confirmed to be stable after receiving proper medical attention by doctors and nurses at the hospital,” the provincial government posted on its website on Friday. The race for survivors though remained tight and tense, as casualties and missing persons also continued to climb. The death now stood at 15 and the number of missing persons also climbed to 109. Thirty-one of the victims earlier escaped the slide, but they were rushed to different clinics and hospitals for treatment of their injuries.

Some 1,166 families were evacuated.

first time in a “very focused evaluation exercise” to assess the ability of the allied forces to operate together, he said. T he unfolding conf licts in Ukraine and the Middle East, he said, were a source of important lessons for the allied troops in the Philippines. “The two conflicts…are continuing to provide us lessons to be learned and to be implemented and to be trained on here in the Philippines,” Evans said. As the conflicts unfold, “We are actively learning, understanding what are some of the challenges that are being experienced,” he said without elaborating. “We talked about this today, our ability to be small and undetectable, our ability to be able to move quickly in this place, our ability to project forward and see and sense are all things that we need to continue to train on,” he said. “Collectively, we have a responsibility to make ourselves more ready today than we were yesterday,” he said. AP

officials of the municipality of Maco d ismissed that mining could not have been the reason. A town disaster official quoted on national television said the area was forested and it was most likely the torrential rains that poured nonstop for days this week had loosened the soil. It could not be immediately ascertained how wide was the area of the landslide and how long was the stretch of the road was covered by the slide when it struck at between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Tuesday. Three buses that carried workers of the mining company, and a still unaccounted number of smaller vehicles were buried in the slide. The debris also smashed several houses along the slope and in the valley. Video footage uploaded by witnesses in the area revealed that people were shouting “withdraw” to residents in the area moments before the landslide. Posts in the social media have also blamed the victims for not heeding warnings in the morning before the incident about the likelihood of a landslide as shown by rockfall early Tuesday.

S Filipino-Chinese communities in the country prepare for the Chinese New Year, Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto C. “Gibo” Teodoro Jr. on Friday wished them good fortune and prosperity in the coming weeks and months in the “Year of the Wood Dragon.” “The Department of National Defense wishes the Chinoys a peaceful and prosperous New Year. Let us welcome a year of growth, progress, and good fortune [for] this Year of the Wood Dragon,” he said in a statement. The Wood Dragon, per Chinese

zodiac, comes once every 60 years. It is associated with “incredible strength, positive transformation, and challenges.” Also, the element of wood symbolizes creativity and adaptability. Teodoro also expressed hope that this year will also be good for Philippine stability and economic development. “May we seize this year of innovation and technology to create a nation of stability and prosperity under a regime of respect for international law and the sanctity of our sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said. Envoy reaffirms Czech Republic’s vow to support AFP modernization program

T

HE Czech Republic reaffirmed its commitment to help the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in its ongoing modernization program. The reaffirmation of support came after Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the Philippines, Karel Hejč, along with a Czech defense delegation, made a courtesy call to the Department of National Defense (DND) last Tuesday, February 6. “The Czech delegation’s courtesy call served as a follow-up to Ambassador Hejč’s introductory call on Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro Jr. in December 2023,” DND spokesperson Arsenio Andolong said in a statement Thursday. They were met by DND Senior Undersecretary Irineo C. Espino, he added. “The Czech delegation reiterated their country’s support to the modernization of the AFP, highlighting their defense products, ranging from small arms to various defense platforms,” Andolong said. Both countries discussed common security challenges, upholding international law, especially focusing on international maritime law, and prospects for long-term defense cooperation under the 2017 Agreement on Defence Cooperation and 2021 Memorandum of Understanding concerning Cooperation in the Area of Defense Industry and Logistics between the DND and the Czech Ministry of Defence. “Ambassador Hejč also expressed keenness to pursue government-togovernment cooperation, explore joint

manufacturing arrangements, and offer financing options for potential projects,” Andolong pointed out. Both sides looked forward to the upcoming 5th Asia Defense and Security, Crisis & Disaster Management Exhibition and Conference in September and the DND’s hosting of the 2nd Joint Defense Committee Meeting on a mutually agreeable date this year. Meanwhile, on February 5, Teodoro met with “Bundestag” (German Federal Parliament) Member, Dr. Johann Wadephul, during the official’s courtesy call to the DND. “The two officials discussed common security challenges affecting both the Philippines and Germany, including the West Philippine Sea [WPS] and the larger South China Sea issue, the ongoing war in Ukraine, energy security, and climate change. With regard to the WPS, Secretary Teodoro expressed appreciation for Germany’s firm support to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea [UNCLOS],” Andolong said. Relatedly, Wadephul brought up Germany’s policy guidelines for the IndoPacific, which puts emphasis on promoting a rules-based international order. “Secretary Teodoro looked forward to strengthening bilateral defense relations between the Philippines and Germany, where the Department plans to establish a resident Philippine Defense and Armed Forces Attaché post in Berlin,” the DND spokesperson said. Nasugbu farmers question DAR order as eviction fears grip beneficiaries of CARP-awarded lands By Jonathan L. Mayuga

F

ARMERS from three haciendas formerly owned by publicly listed Roxas and Company Inc. (RCI) in Nasugbu, Batangas rejected a Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) order that may potentially cause their eviction from their C ARPawarded lands.

The Katipunan ng mga Magbubukid sa Hacienda Roxas Inc. (KAMAHARI) represented by its president, Carlito Caisip, and Damayan ng Manggagawang Bukid sa Asyenda Roxas-National Federation of Sugar Workers (DAMBA-NFSW), represented by Lauro Martin, filed an Omnibus Motion with Motion for Reconsideration of the Consolidated Order of DAR Secretary

Conrado Estrella III dated December 29, 2023. The order, released only in January, directed the Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer (PARPO) of Nasugbu to consolidate the six certificates of titles for Hacienda Caylaway, Hacienda Palico, and Banilad, the cancellation of previously issued Certificate of Land Ownership and Award

(CLOA) and redistribution of 1,322 hectares, representing half of the aggregate land for distribution. Some 50,000 farmers, who are mostly holders of CLOA from the three disputed haciendas, stand to be affected by the order. The order subsequently allowed RCI to keep the other half covering a total of 1,322 hectares. The motion for reconsideration filed by lawyer Mario Bernardo S. Cerro, in behalf of the farmers, cited as grounds for reconsideration the fact that all agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARB) in Barangay Aga covered by Hacienda Caylaway never consented to the voluntary withdrawal of all pending cases that paved the way for the consolidated order. “With all due respect, respondents were misrepresented by their former counsel in agreeing to the voluntary submission for the consolidated order,” the motion for reconsideration stated. According to Cerro, the DAR chief also committed grave abuse of discretion in evading the positive duty directed by Supreme Court in G.R. No. 127876 and the consolidated order brushed aside final and executory judgments in the same case and the consolidated cases in G.R. Nos. 149598, 167505, 167540, 167543, 167845,

and 179650. In question is the 63-page consolidated order dated December 29, 2023 handed down by DAR in January this year. In rendering the decision, the DAR chief said decades of judicial hostilities that have been alternately instigated and endured by the principal parties—the landowner on one hand and the ARBs on the other—are now to see closure. “Their clamor has been heeded, elusive justice now finally achieved and secured. The time, resources, energies, and efforts spent in unceasing argumentation [can] now to come to a halt and justice dispensed equitably,” the order stated. “The waiting time, fraught with anxiety, frustration, and desperation that often led to the dissipation of faith in the government in its ability to render justice, is now to be a thing of the past—overturned and overtaken by the present thrust towards quick agrarian justice delivery,” it added. On a positive note, the order stated that qualified ARBs are rendered free of payment of any amortization under the New Agrarian Emancipation Act of 2023. Subsequently, Estrella also ordered the PARPO II of Nasugbu to issue a Certificate of Condonation with Release of Mortgage to each ARB

to clear their names of debt. “The ARBs are hereby ordered to vacate the areas outside the ½ portion awarded to them and are enjoined to peacefully turn over the physical possession to Roxas and Company Inc.,” the order stated. Likewise, RCI is ordered to vacate the portion outside their ½ share and to turn over the physical possession to the ARBs. Estrella also ordered the convening of the Presidential Agrarian Reform Council-Executive Committee (PARC-Execom) for the earmarking of appropriate just compensation for RCI for half of the portion to be distributed to the qualified ARBs. The order cited jurisdictional basis to finally end the agonizing litigation struggles that have spanned almost four decades, including a myriad of complex cases tirelessly thrown back and forth between the Supreme Court and the DAR. However, the farmers argued that their former counsel committed fraud and deception, and misled them, adding their former lawyer never consulted them about his plan to withdraw all cases and submit to the jurisdiction of the DAR Secretary. The farmers, believing they were betrayed, are mulling over to go after their former legal counsel.

Age-proof your value By Nick Tayag

my sixty-zen’S WORTH

O

ur society puts an expiry date on our usefulness with the mandatory retirement at age 65. But just as packaged food products are still very edible beyond the expiry dates on their labels, we can still be “juicy” and “substantial” beyond that arbitrary age line. Just like Time, retirement is just a concept invented by humans. We may be “best before 65” but in many instances, our very best can be attained during the so-called golden years when we’re supposed to be quietly and obscurely resting idly somewhere. My strong advice: don’t let our society’s youth-centric culture cancel you after retirement. Be deaf to those who call you “tander” or “gurang” behind your back or the moment you’re out of earshot. But if you allow age and retirement entropy you and slowly lead you to the end “not with a bang but with whimper,” then your epitaph will probably read like this: “Expired at age 65. Existed up to age 80.” Pity the person who gives up the ghost so easily because society tells him to think so. Of course not—you probably would strongly protest. Then do not let your Self depreciate in value like a car. Be like a Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Breitling that retain their value and become even more highly priced and sought after over time. Age-proof your value. Be a high-quality person even in your late years. Not somebody who has stagnated due to age, a person with limited and diminished usefulness and value. Be like some friends of my senior friends who have become a juicier person physically, mentally and spiritually. They keep their bodies in good condition. They exercise, walk, jog, do meditation, and are engaged in creative, social and volunteer activities. Look at this golden period of your life as a time of emergence and vital growth not a stagnation or entropy, which in science is defined as “the degradation of the matter and energy to an ultimate state of inert uniformity” or atrophy which in medicine refers to a “gradual decline in effectiveness or vigor due to underuse or neglect.” The poet John Keats in his “Ode to Autumn” writes: “Where are the songs of spring? Ay, Where are they? Think not of them, thou hast thy music too.” Yes, in our third age, we have our own distinctive music, too! We may be old but we are gold. Why? Each of us has a wealth of accumulated knowledge borne of long years of experience. We possess a mind that has ripened to full maturity or “mellow fruitfulness” in the words of John Keats. Nobody can take this from us. It’s our singular asset that will prove very useful in any human endeavor. In our lingo, “hindi matatawaran.” Cherish this solid and substantial foundation but keep on adding value to it. Re-invent or up-

cycle yourself. Develop new skills, the ones that suit your aptitude and make use of your innate talent. Acquire new and incremental knowledge related to your expertise. Keep up with new technology and new trends. Surf the Internet, scan social media. Mingle with and learn from young professionals by osmosis. Don’t be ashamed to admit your lack of knowhow. Be ready to change your mind about tenets and received knowledge, which you find too narrow-minded or even erroneous. Widen your perspective. Stay curious, as Steve Jobs once told university students. Rollo May in his book “Courage to Create” says that even in retirement, one must not cease from “expanding [his] outer and inner limits.” How? Gautama Buddha tells us: “Irrigators channel water, bowmakers shape arrows, carpenters fashion wood, the wise train themselves.” Indeed, it is wise to continue flexing all our muscles—physical, mental and spiritual. Look at the master carpenter, the auto mechanic and the gardener we hire from time to time. They are all in their 70s but they are still much sought after. That’s because they have remained sharp and proficient by continuing to practice their craft and keeping up with the times. In the beginning, people see only a retiree with diminished use, like a floating island sticking out. But once they encounter you more closely, they will see a person who is well grounded, a special someone who possesses depth and substance. Malalim, mabigat, hindi matitibag. Not shallow nor hollow. For in reality the island is only the tip of a mountain, rooted deep in the abyss of the ocean. As a senior fellow, I really don’t want to be pampered and patronized with special privileges and entitlements like what society is doing to seniors now. I cringe when people give me priority over others who have waited in line. I never use my senior discount card for small purchases unlike others who have no compunction in using the privilege for just a cup of coffee. As they say, “walang patawad.” Deep in our hearts, we would rather be respected, sought and needed as persons of priceless value who still have much to contribute to the community, business and the country. To continue quoting the poet John Keats, he urges us to “think warm days will never cease/For summer has o’er-brimm’d [our] clammy cells.” My fellow retirees, rage, rage against today’s cancel culture. Let’s age-proof our usefulness and value beyond the shelf-life allotted by society. Let’s show them that we are not just “best before,” but “best always.”

DSWD backs move to abolish purchase booklet for seniors

T

By Zaldy De Layola

he Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Friday said it fully supports the call of two lawmakers to abolish the senior citizen’s purchase slip booklet following numerous complaints coming from the elderly. Secretary Rex Gatchalian said in a news release the DSWD will take the lead in reaching out to the Department of Health (DOH) and other concerned agencies on the proposal of ACT-CIS Party-list Rep. Erwin Tulfo and Marikina Rep. Stella Quimbo. DSWD Assistant Secretary for Strategic Communications Romel Lopez said the department, in previous years, had received various concerns and complaints through various means of communication, relative to the senior citizen discounts. Gatchalian directed the agency’s Program Management Bureau (PMB) to make a study and recommendation regarding the senior citizen purchase slip booklet, which has been the subject of a congressional inquiry. DSWD-PMB’s position paper dated February 1, 2024 recommended to Gatchalian the abolition of the purchase slip booklet as a requirement for the purchase of medicines by senior citizens. The DSWD-PMB recommended the adoption of digitized records for the senior citizens, “considering the mobility and tendency to forget to bring their booklets and even read their content, it is no longer convenient on the part of senior citizens to use purchase slip booklets.” “With the fast-paced technology and innovations, it is recommended

to adopt an established system for monitoring, storing, and reporting data towards an efficient, consistent, and uniform implementation of the law and provisions for the availment of medicines, basic necessities, and prime commodities, among others,” the PMB said in its position paper. The PMB maintained that in this digitalization, the concerned agencies such as the National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC), Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Health (DOH), Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), and the Department of Justice (DOJ), and representation from nongovernment organizations(NGOs), shall partner with members of the private sector offering services to senior citizens. Tulfo on Tuesday called for the scrapping of the purchase booklets as a requirement for the elderly to avail themselves of a 20 percent discount for medicines and groceries. He made this remark during the House Committee on Ways and Means hearing on the implementation and policies that provide discounts and incentives for senior citizens and persons with disabili-

ties (PWDs). “I think we have to go away with the booklet because this is useless and an additional burden to senior citizens,” he said. Tulfo said senior citizen identification should be enough for the elderly to avail themselves of the discount. “Secondly, sir, this is an insult to all the senior citizens because it’s like the merchants of business establishments look down on them as cheaters and that they need to own a booklet,” he said. Tulfo said the majority of the senior citizens tend to forget their booklet, a good and sufficient reason for business establishments to refuse or deny them the sought discount. He said he personally witnessed several times that some senior citizens needed to return home, no matter how far it is, just to get the forgotten purchase booklet, which is normally a part of their “senior moments.” “Maybe we need to review this law, once and for all. Because it’s like senior citizens are begging,” he said.

United Senior Citizens Party-list Rep. Milagros Aquino-Magsaysay agreed with Tulfo’s suggestion to abolish the booklet. “I find it useless to show the booklet,” she said. House Committee on Ways and Means chairperson, Albay Rep. Joey Salceda, said the purchase booklets for senior citizens is not necessary. “I agree [with Congressman Erwin Tulfo], with that, we will increase the membership of the TWG [technical working group] crafting the new law on senior citizens and PWDs. Rep. Erwin can join anytime with the TWG that is writing the new law,” Salceda said. Tulfo also echoed the suggestion of Marikina Rep. Stella Luz Quimbo to review and create a new policy for senior citizen discounts regarding online delivery services and ridehailing applications. “The law was passed more than 10 years ago. These Grab and hailing companies came out only during the pandemic. So, they are not covered by our law,” he said. “So, there is really something wrong with this law and we have to review it.” PNA

senior lawmaker strongly backed the enforcement of the oversight power of the House of Representatives to ensure compliance with laws providing discounts and benefits to around 35 million senior citizens, solo parents, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the country. Last Sunday, Camarines Rep. LRay F. Villafuerte issued a statement expressing full support for Speaker Ferdinand G. Romualdez’s warning to non-compliant establishments, emphasizing the potential initiation of legal action against businesses violating these laws. While awaiting the House inquiry’s conclusion on discount implementation issues, Villafuerte urged national government agencies to collaborate with local government units (LGUs) to ensure effective implementation of laws benefiting the elderly, single parents, and PWDs. “Various laws have been aptly put in place to provide economic relief to our elderly, solo parents, and PWDs to help cushion the impact on them of the ever-spiraling cost of living,” the lawmaker said. “These landmark laws on social reform will amount to nothing if they are honored more in the breach.” Villafuerte emphasized the significance of existing laws aimed at providing economic relief to vulnerable groups, emphasizing his support for the Speaker’s commitment to ensure the implementation of privileges for these sectors. Romualdez, head of the House Committee on Ways and Means, initiated an investigation into reported violations of Republic Act (RA) 9994 (Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010) and RA 10754 (An Act Expanding the Benefits and Privileges of PWDs). RA 11861, meanwhile, grants price discounts and other economic benefits to single dads or single moms or to the legitimate guardians of the children of solo parents. Villafuerte, who co-authored laws benefiting seniors (RA 9994) and solo parents (RA 11861), highlighted ongoing legislative efforts, including a bill granting cash gifts to the elderly at specific age milestones. He also urged LGUs to support accurate data collection for the estimated 12.3 million elderly Filipinos, citing the importance of maintaining an updated database.

CHEd official says tertiary students need more facilities T

iAcademy upbeat on Pinoys’ proficiencies in game devt By Rizal Raoul S. Reyes

T

ACLOBAN CITY—The chair of the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) cited advantages if state universities and colleges (SUCs) and their local counterparts (LUCs) cease the enlistment of senior high school (SHS) students on their campuses. Speaking to reporters during his visit to the Samar State University (SSU), Chairperson J. Prospero de Vera III of Ched said there has been increasing enrollment in tertiary schools, and they need more learning facilities. “More students have been enrolling in college every year due to the scholarship program. Our SUCs

and LUCs need more classrooms and teachers,” de Vera said. Facilities used by SHS students can be used by college students.” The move, according to the official, is not new because some tertiary schools have reduced their SHS enrollment even before the pandemic: "There are many SUCs that have stopped offering their SHS as early

as 2018. Some college schools never offered [such] programs, and never heard any complaints.” He noted that from 32 percent in the past, the number of universityaged participants increased to 41 percent in 2023. “It’s time for our SUCs to invest

in technology for implementing distance learning to deliver learning online to more learners,” he added. The memorandum on the halting of the SHS program in SUCs and LUCs on December 18, 2023 was not abrupt, de Vera explained, then added that Academic Year 2023-2024 is still ongoing, and no displacement of students has occurred. “There is no more legal basis for SUCs and LUCs to have [SHS], except for those having laboratory schools for their education...They need additional facilities because of the increased enrollment in [the former],” he said. De Vera was in Samar from February 1 to 3 for a series of events—including a dialogue with SSU students and employees, a campus tour, and the induction of a new set of Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges-Region 8’s (Eastern Visayas) officers. Italy’s embassy serves free language course in Tondo By Malou Talosig-Bartolome

T

HE Embassy of Italy inaugurated the six-month Italian Language course in Tondo, Manila on February 1. Ambassador Marco Clemente spearheaded the ceremony, along with Fr. Giovanni Gentilin of the Philippine Italian Association at Fr. Gioacchino Hall of the San Pablo Apostol Parish. According to Clemente, the halfyear language course is a channel to promote not only the bilateral relations of the Philippines and Italy, but to also change public perceptions about Tondo as a community. It also serves as an opportunity for its participants’ future, said the embassy.

HE Tanco family-led iACADEMY is optimistic that Filipinos can be a major force in game development because of their innate talent and creativity. “We can thrive in game development because…Filipinos are great at design. [Those] that our students are making are at par with international standards,” said Kiko Napalit, who is the academy’s dean of its School of Computing. “With sufficient support from the government and the private sector, [we] will take the Philippine game-development industry to new heights.” Napalit added: “We will be at the forefront of game development with GDAP [Game Developers Association of the Philippines] members being professors at iACADEMY. We have… talented students in game development, and many of their games like Bayani, Unspoken and Far Away From Home are already…in the market.” According to him, the school recently joined the “Huawei Information and Communications Technology 2023-2024” competition, then said the team is going to Jakarta, Indonesia to participate in a regional tilt. Meanwhile, Dean Jon Cuyson of iACADEMY’s School of Design and the Arts said their students are also being honed in virtual and augmented reality for the incoming career opportunities in the country: “As educators, we mold them and give them the information they need. That way, they are prepared when they go out in the real world.” Cuyson said major players in animation such as Team App Animation Studios, Toon Boom Animation, Top Peg Animation, and Creative Stu-

dio—both in virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI)—are “present in how we design the curriculum.” “Whatever needs to be changed, they will be there,” the dean said. “We hold meetings with them every term to [analyze our curricula], so that we are always current.” He assured that the course on AI and VR is always updated. iACADEMY also promotes inter-school tie-ups, and always communicates with the Commission on Higher Education as well as other regional schools: “We have iACADEMY-Cebu, so it opens up lots of opportunities for collaboration not just in Manila.” Vice President for Academics Cecilia Sy said the school faced several challenges in implementing the program. Nevertheless, she confirmed that iACADEMY is determined to deliver a quality program for its students. Moreover, she shared that their offering of niche programs was initially met with skepticism. However, through strong industry partnerships, Sy said the school not only weathered the storm of criticism, but emerged triumphant: “Over the past two decades, iACADEMY's success has been shaped by…our commitment to innovation, strategic partnerships, and the invaluable support of media partners.” Boasting a 96-percent employment rate for its graduates, iACADEMY officials reiterated that various career paths await its computing and design students not just in the game-development industry, but also in high-demanded fields of animation, multimedia arts, artificial intelligence, software engineering, web development, data science, cloud computing, and cybersecurity.

AMBASSADOR Marco Clemente (center, standing in coat) with embassy officials and learners

For the ambassador, becoming proficient with the Italian language can open huge possibilities—including the chance to obtain a scholarship for studying in Italy.

“We often associate Tondo as a dangerous place for some, but there is actually hope and beauty in this community…we have to change that mindset,” Clemente said. “[Its

youth] have so much potential…we don’t have to neglect their capabilities just because they are living in [an area] that is always tagged as harmful.” The envoy likewise stated that through the Italian language course, which will run from February 3 to August 3, the youths of Tondo will also have the chance to explore the long-standing mutual cooperation between Italy and the Philippines. Classes will be held every Saturday for a selected group of studentbeneficiaries of the Canossa-Tondo Children’s Foundation, the Italian Embassy disclosed. Currently, the Italian Language course is open to the 29 youths of Tondo.

Global Alliance webinar draws 2,000+ participants, explores AI impact on PR for students, young pros

T

HE effect of artificial intelligence (AI) on the future of public relations (PR) took center stage at the recent “Student and Young Practitioner Month” by the Global Alliance, which engaged diverse panelists across continents. The three-day webinar series generated thought-provoking discussions from more than 2,000 attendees spread over three days. Designed to enrich knowledge for students and young practitioners, the series formed part of the Global Alliance’s professional development efforts, aligning with their ongoing “KNow Movement” campaign. Activities included “Career Day,” which explored the impact of technology, particularly AI, and the insights shared in the CIPR report: Humans

needed more than ever, which highlighted that the technology could complement or substitute 12 percent of a PR practitioner’s skills today, with a projected 38 percent within the next five years. However, the survey also emphasized that vital human traits such as empathy, trust, and humor remain irreplaceable. Other activities, including the “Jobs Fair” and “Deep Talk” sessions, provided a platform for industry experts to discuss their experiences and enhance shared knowledge within the PR domain. The survey also revealed trends in gender diversity and age within the said industry, while emphasizing prevalent challenges—including misinformation and disinformation, fake news, AI, and deep fakes.

HISTORICAL LANDMARKS Journey through the Baltic Cities

I

Story & photos by Joshua Berida

planned on visiting the three capital cities of the Baltics when I was in Poland. I booked my bus ticket in advance bound for Riga. The days went by in Warsaw until it was time for me to embark on my journey through the Baltics. Riga My first stop on this journey is the capital of Latvia, Riga. The city was established in 1201 as a port where trade took place. In 1282, it joined the Hanseatic League as the city grew and opened to traders from different parts of the region. As the city became prominent and important, the powerful kingdoms at the time wanted it under their rule. The Swedes, Poles, and Russians fought for supremacy over the city. From 1918 to 1940, Riga became Latvia’s capital. It was subsequently integrated into the Soviet Union until the country gained independence again in 1991. I pondered on the city’s interesting history as I walked around the UNESCO-listed old town. Its cobblestone streets and centuries old buildings create an atmospheric ambiance. The Riga Cathedral is a renowned landmark of the city. It has a history that dates to 1211. However, its current appearance only dates to the 19th century. The fetching House of the Blackheads is the Town Hall Square’s centerpiece. As you look upon the beautiful exteriors of the buildings, you wouldn’t think that these were recent reconstructions. The bombings that took place during World War II inflicted severe damage on the original structures. The House of the Blackheads was the historical venue for the gatherings of sailors and merchants. After seeing some of the city’s most famous attractions, I was ready to leave for my next stop in the Baltics, Tallinn.

Tallinn Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, fol-

lowed a similar history like its regional neighbor Riga. It joined the Hanseatic League in 1285 as trade increased with its neighbors. The city was also under the Swedes and Russians during its history. In the 1940s until 1991, Estonia was part of the Soviet Union as well. The country became an independent state when the USSR collapsed with Tallinn as its capital. Tallinn is one of my favorite cities in Europe. Its UNESCO World Heritage-listed old town oozes with old world charm. Its cobblestone streets, quaint and narrow alleys, and preserved medieval and Hanseatic architecture made me feel like I traveled back in time. The Town Hall Square has experienced the hustle and bustle of the city for centuries. Its busy market days are a thing of the medieval ages, fast forward to today, it’s a lively place where many tourists and locals gather at the cafes and restaurants. St. Olaf ’s Church towers over Tallinn at a height of more than 120m high. The church got its name from Norway’s King Olaf II. The structure dates to the early 13th century and is one of the oldest medieval buildings in the city. Another noteworthy structure that’s part of Tallinn’s cityscape is the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Its construction concluded in the early part of the 20th century. It has distinct black, onion-shaped domes, striking red and white façade draw the attention of visitors. Go to one of the viewpoints on the walls to get fetching overlooking views of the city.

anuary, normally a busy month of festivals dedicated to the Santo Nino, is also a month where the province of Isabela honors the scarecrow, the unheralded hero of the rice fields, through the Bambanti Festival. Again in the forefront of the celebration were Governor Rodolfo “Rodito” Albano III and Vice Governor Faustino “Bojie” G. Dy III, director general of the Bambanti Festival 2024. Now in its 11th edition, this year’s theme is “Ettam Ngana Ta Isabela” (“Let’s Go to Isabela”), a tourism marketing campaign that encourages travelers to discover, enjoy, and appreciate Isabela’s treasures. Following this theme, members of invited online and print media, from Manila, who made the 10-hour trip to cover the event, experienced that and more. The 90-room Mango Suites,

a boutique hotel in Cauayan City, would be our home during our six-day stay. As in the past, the 8-hectare Provincial Capitol Compound at the City of Ilagan was the center for the festival’s activities. The day after our arrival, we visited the 30 booths at the Bambanti Village Agro-Ecotourism Trade Exhibit where each participating municipality and city sold its local specialties. Each booth was decorated with giant bambanti (scarecrows) built with natural, organic, and biodegradable materials indigenous to the province such as wood, bamboo, rattan and straw and decorated with corn seeds, munggo beans, rice, assorted vegetables and fish. The the big winners were the City of Ilagan (Category A) and Cordon (Category B) in the Giant Bambanti competition, and Echague (Category A) and Cordon (Category B) in the Agri-Ecotourism Booth competition.

TikTok content creators share the realities of their occupation

I

HAD the privilege of interviewing two personalities who are both popular on the internet, during the Watsons Health and Wellness Expo, a four-day event held at the Megatrade Hall, SM Megamall. Arshie Larga is a pharmacist who was named TikTok Creator of the Year 2023. On TikTok, he has 3.8 million followers. On Facebook, he has 1.7 million followers. He is best known for talking about how medications work on his TikTok, thus his famous

line: “Let me explain.” So we asked Larga, whose content is mostly human interest, informative and educational, which he preferred more—being a pharmacist or a content creator. “Both have their own pros and cons. Pero pinakamahirap maging pharmacist kasi ’yung araw-araw na struggles ng mga customers mo, nakikita mo talaga and nakikita mo na kailangan pa ng improvement in terms of our healthcare system [It’s more difficult being a pharmacist because you see the struggles of your customers and you realize so much improvement is needed in the country’s healthcare system].” Larga said content creation is difficult and challenging. It is also not a stable occupation. “Kaya kung papipiliin, pipiliin ko pa din maging isang pharmacist kesa maging isang content creator kasi po nakakapagod maging isang content creator [Content creation is challenging and tiring so I would still choose to be a pharmacist].” Still, Larga said he continues to be grateful for all the opportunities that he has received since becoming a content creator.

“Hangga’t may mga tumatangkilik sa mga videos ko, I will keep on creating educational and entertaining videos [As long as people like my videos, I will continue to create educational and entertaining videos].” One of the best things that Larga has showed as a content creator is that pharmacists aren’t just sales people but licensed professionals. The second TikTok content creator I interviewed was Steven Bansil, who is best known for his Office Serye. Bansil is a writer whose videos are relatable and hilarious. He has 1.1 million followers on TikTok. “Sa Office Serye, dun ko nakitang ang daming nakaka-relate kasi ang pinapakita ko dun happens on a daily basis. Ang daming nagmi-message sa akin na ‘may Georgette kami dito, may Sir Mike kami’ I saw how people related to the Office Serye and they would message me and tell me ‘we also have a Georgette, we also have a Sir Mike,’” said Bansil, who is the ambassador for beauty supplement Nuwhite. Not surprisingly, Bansil is an introvert. “Mahiyain po talaga ako. Hindi ako masungit but it drains me pag may lumalapit, may nagpapa-picture but I appreciate everything [I am shy and I feel drained when I am approached by strangers and they ask to take a picture with me],” said Bansil. One thing that he has learned is that his content needs to be for general patronage. “I am more careful now about my content kasi ang daming batang nanonood. I make sure ang content ko pwede sa lahat ng tao of all ages [So many kids are on Tiktok so I make sure my content is apt for all ages.]” We asked Bansil for tips that he could share with aspiring content creators. “‘Wag kang gumaya sa iba. ‘Wag kang gumaya sa kung anong trending. Focus on who you are as a person, kasi I feel like we are unique in our own ways so ’yung pagiging unique mo, ’yun ang magiging product mo. ’Yun ang ia-admire ng audience mo [Don’t imitate others. Don’t ride on trends. Be original and focus on who you are. Every person is unique. You are unique and people will see that. They will admire your authenticity and what you have to offer].” Larga and Bansil were at Watsons Health and Wellness Expo 2024 as speakers. The expo highlighted the range of health and beauty products available at Watsons. Over 52 different brand booths had interactive activities. Aside from that, the expo also offered free health consultations, informative and educational talks, raffle draws and prizes, wellness sessions, and pharmacy services under “Click & Collect Express.” Celebrity guests like Anne Curtis, Jessy Mendiola, Kristine Hermosa, Kuya Kim, Francine Diaz, Gabby Concepcion and other brand ambassadors were also there to share their health and wellness journeys, while health experts from top brands and medical associations talked about several health topics throughout the four-day event.

Customer service in local telco Unlocking a year of jet-setting adventures needs improvement says Converge By Rizal Raoul S. Reyes CONVERGE ICT Solutions Inc recently stressed that customer service in the local telco industry needs vast improvement for the benefit of consumers. As far as the company is concerned, Jesus Romero, senior executive vice president and chief operations officer, Converge ICT Solutions Inc., told reporters in an interview on the sidelines that the company will not be resting on its laurels to be able to continue delivering quality and at the same time affordable service to its customers. He added that it is the heart of the company’s successes toward becoming a leading provider of connectivity to the people. In general, Romero said that customer service in the local telco industry “needs a lot of work to make it really good.” Converge has been at the forefront of the Philippines’ digital revolution. Operating the largest Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) network in the country, the company boasts a fiber footprint spanning over 682,000 kilometers. With nearly 7.9 million fiber ports deployed and coverage extending to 77.85 percent of the Philippine population, the company exceeded two million residential subscribers before the end of 2023, a testament to the growing demand for its reliable and high-speed internet services. To capture the mass market, Converge ICT Solutions Inc. recently launched its most affordable postpaid fiber plan yet, BIDA Fiber in the southern cities of the National Capital Region. “As we champion digital access to mass markets, we are encouraged by the take-up of the BIDA fiber brand which is now gradually expanding its presence in NCR. We will bring the affordability and best-inclass fiber connection that Converge is known for in more regions by year-end,” said Converge Regional General Manager for NCR Jay Villalobos during the launch held in Las Piñas City. At the price of P888 monthly, Villalobis said the postpaid fiber plan offers reliable and fast internet with a budgeted monthly subscription, aiming to capture the mass market in the the local residents of Las Piñas and Parañaque. Further, he said BIDA Fiber has been gaining favorable support from budgetconscious local subscribers since its launch in San Nicolas, Cebu, last September. Villalobos said BIDA Fiber subscribers will get to connect up to six WiFi-enabled gadgets simultaneously and get to enjoy using it for online classes, working-from-home setup, connecting to loved ones abroad, and online gaming. “In today’s economy, we want to make sure customers realize more savings in their internet subscription. With BIDA Fiber, Filipinos may get the same, world-class connection at a price lower than the prevailing average cost of a postpaid fiber internet plan. It’s always a question of quality over price, but with BIDA, they don’t have to choose. We offer both,” Converge CEO and Co-Founder Dennis Anthony Uy shared in a media release.

NEW YORK—An oversight board is criticizing Facebook owner Meta’s policies regarding manipulated media as “incoherent” and insufficient to address the flood of online disinformation that already has begun to target elections across the globe this year. The quasi-independent board on Monday said its review of an altered video of President Joe Biden that spread on Facebook exposed gaps in the policy. The board said Meta should expand the policy to focus not only on videos generated with artificial intelligence, but on media regardless of how it was created. That includes fake audio recordings, which already have convincingly impersonated political candidates in the US and elsewhere. The company also should clarify the harms it is trying to prevent and should label images, videos and audio clips as manipulated instead of removing the posts altogether, the Meta Oversight Board said. The board’s feedback reflects the intense scrutiny that is facing many tech companies for their handling of election falsehoods in a year when voters in more than 50 countries will go to the polls. As both generative artificial intelligence deepfakes and lower-quality “cheap fakes” on social media threaten to mislead voters, the platforms are trying to catch up and respond to false posts while protecting users’ rights to free speech. “As it stands, the policy makes little sense,” Oversight Board co-chair Michael McConnell said of Meta’s policy in a statement on Monday. He said the company should close gaps in the policy while ensuring political speech is “unwaveringly protected.” Meta said it is reviewing the Oversight Board’s guidance and will respond publicly to the recommendations within 60 days.

Songs by Taylor Swift, Drake and more are starting to disappear from TikTok. Here’s why By Wyatte Grantham-Philips The Associated Press

PHOTO BY SOLEN FEYISSA ON UNSPLASH

N

EW YORK—TikTok may look (or sound) a little different when you scroll through the app going forward. Earlier this week, Universal Music Group—which represents big-name artists like Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny and Drake—said that it would no longer allow its music on TikTok following the Wednesday expiration of a licensing deal between the two companies. The takedown of UMG-related music began overnight, ByteDance-owned TikTok confirmed to The Associated Press. As of early Thursday, a vast roster of popular songs had disappeared from the social media platform’s library. The complete removal of UMG-licensed music might not be immediate—but chances are, avid TikTokers are already seeing the effects. Here’s a rundown of where things stand.

WHAT MUSIC IS GETTING REMOVED FROM TIKTOK?

The songs getting pulled from TikTok are those that are licensed by UMG—which carries an enormous reach across the music industry and, consequently, our digital diet today. “Universal Music Group is literally the largest record label...in the history of the music industry,” said Andrew Mall, an associate professor of music at Northeastern University. An “uncountable number of tracks and sounds” would be impacted on TikTok, he added, significantly limiting options for creators. TikTok users signing on Thursday will see that they are no longer able to search for many popular songs—including music from Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Olivia Rodrigo and more—under the “sounds” tab. In addition to users no longer having the option of adding these songs to next dance craze and other trending content, past videos featuring UMGlicensed music will also be scrubbed. According to a UMG spokesperson, whether these existing videos are muted or taken down entirely will be up to TikTok. Artists will also not be able to post the audio of their UMG-licensed songs on TikTok. If the music has a UMG license, it should be muted, the spokesperson said—noting the company will protect its copyrights. Complete removal will likely be a process, so it may take a few days for TikTokers see the full effects. It’s also important to note that music licensing is a complicated business and artists often have different songs that move through different labels. While a singer’s UGM tracks will be removed, songs licensed exclusively with other music giants (like Warner and Sony-owned labels, for example) shouldn’t be impacted.

HOW DID WE GET HERE?

THE expiration of licensing between UMG and TikTok arrived after the two companies were unable to reach a new agreement—and soon shared heated exchanges. In a Tuesday letter addressed to artists and songwriters, UMG said that it had been pressing TikTok on three issues: “appropriate compensation for our artists and songwriters, protecting human artists from the harmful effects of AI, and online safety for TikTok’s users.” UMG said that TikTok proposed paying its artists and songwriters at a rate that’s a fraction of the rate

that other major social platforms pay, adding that TikTok makes up only about 1 percent of its total revenue. The music giant also took issue with TikTok’s promotion of AI music creation—which UMG says poses risks to human artists—and the platform’s record with what it says is hate speech, bigotry, bullying and harassment. TikTok pushed back against claims by UMG, saying that it has reached “artist-first” agreements with every other label and publisher. “It is sad and disappointing that Universal Music Group has put their own greed above the interests of their artists and songwriters,” TikTok said.

WILL IT LAST?

DESPITE the licensing deal’s expiration, experts note that we’re still a moment of negotiation between UMG and TikTok—and it probably won’t last forever. “We’ve seen this movie before. It’s a wonderful, theatrical stand-off between two very major corporations...who are wanting to assert their authority on the landscape,” said former president of UMG’s Virgin EMI Records Ted Cockle, who now runs music advisory company called Mussel Music Management. Users will likely find ways to adjust in the meantime, Cockle added, but he and others doubt that such a standoff will last long—noting that a partnership between UMG and TikTok is significantly beneficial to both parties. Historically speaking, Mall said, gaps for other licensing agreements in the 21st century’s digital era have typically lasted just a day to up to a few months. There will also likely be added pressure from TikTok creators, artists and their fans. “This is a platform that’s really important for artists,” said Alexandra J. Roberts, a professor of law and media at Northeastern University. “It might not

affect established artists as much, but some of them are going to lose revenue streams. And I think we’re going to see frustrated fans, right? Users who don’t understand or are angry about the fact that they can’t use or access or engage with some artists’ work.” Representatives for several artists with UMGlicensed music—including Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, SZA, Drake, Ariana Grande and Billie Eilish—did not immediately respond to The Associated Press’ requests for comment. Mall stressed the overall consequences of pulling music from social media platforms like TikTok— particularly for younger developing artists. In this situation, UMG’s revenue mostly comes from well-known artists who will probably be “just fine” if their music is no longer on TikTok, he said, but “smaller labels, smaller artists [couldn’t] afford to do something like this.” Content creators and marketing experts are already preparing to pivot as needed. Jessica Henig, founder and CEO of music marketing firm Unlocked Branding who is works on campaigns involving UMG-licensed music, said it’s not ideal, but that her team has grown accustom to working through delays across the social media landscape. Still, Henig, who previously headed influencer marketing at Virgin EMI, said time will tell. “If this is going to be a longevity thing, then we might have a different conversation,” she said. TikTok’s standoff with Universal isn’t the first time a recording label has gone head-to-head with a social media company over licensing terms. In late 2008, Warner Music Group pulled all of its music from YouTube, saying the payments it received from the video-sharing site did not fairly compensate the label, its artists or songwriters. Warner agreed to return songs and music videos months later after reaching a new deal with YouTube. AP

Spokesperson Corey Chambliss said while audio deepfakes aren’t mentioned in the company’s manipulated media policy, they are eligible to be fact-checked and will be labeled or down-ranked if fact-checkers rate them as false or altered. The company also takes action against any type of content if it violates Facebook’s Community Standards, he said. Facebook, which turned 20 this week, remains the most popular social media site for Americans to get their news, according to Pew. But other social media sites, among them Meta’s Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads, as well as X, YouTube and TikTok, also are potential hubs where deceptive media can spread and fool voters.

AMES YAP is moving over to Blackwater and not to Magnolia as many speculated. “I’m now with Blackwater, I signed a one season contract,” Yap told BusinessMirror on Friday. “It’s similar with my contract with Rain or Shine, except for my playing time.” Speculations spread that Yap, a twotime Most Valuable Player who’s now 41 years old, would move over to Magnolia, his former team when the San Miguel Corp. franchise carried the San Mig Coffee brand, for his swan song. He played only three games for the Elasto Painters though in the Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup averaging a low 5.0 points. As a Bossing, Yap said he’s not yet mulling retirement. “I can still play longer minutes if the coaches want me to,” Yap, now a San Juan City councilor, said. “This is not yet my last, my body can still hold on. I’m in good condition and very disciplined on what I do.” The 6-foot-2 Yap—a native of Escalante in Negros Occidental, was a former scoring and seven-time champion—said he’s happy to reunite with Blackwater coach Jeffrey Cariaso, who was Tim Cone’s assistant when they won the grand slam for San Mig Coffee (Magnolia) in 2013. “I believe Blackwater will do well and I know we have young players capable of playing high level basketball,” said the 19-year league veteran. “I’m here to guide them.” He thanked team owner Dioceldo Sy for bringing him to Blackwater. Yap will don the Blackwater uniform starting this season’s Philippine Cup.

JAMES YAP says he’s not mulling retirement soon.

ONG KONG—The organizer of a muchhyped soccer match that intended to showcase Lionel Messi in Hong Kong said Friday it would offer a 50 percent refund following days of backlash from angry fans and the government over the absence of the World Cup winner. The grievances from Hong Kong fans stemming from Messi staying on the bench for the full 90 minutes in the game against a local team due to a groin injury earlier this week has spread to mainland China after the Argentina star put in a 30-minute game appearance in Tokyo in Inter Miami’s latest exhibition match in Asia on Wednesday. Over the past two days, many social media users in mainland China expressed their disappointment over Messi’s no-show, with China’s state-run newspaper, the Global Times, publishing an editorial that said the impact of the controversy surrounding the football star “has far exceeded the realm of sports.” In an Instagram post on Friday, local organizer Tatler Asia apologized to those who were disappointed by the match and said it was upset by “the seeming lack of respect shown to the crowd.” It reiterated it had pleaded with Inter Miami’s management to urge Messi to explain to the spectators after it learned the football star, who was required to play for 45 minutes unless injured under their contract, would not be playing. “He didn’t. The fact that Messi... played in Japan on February 7th feels like another slap in the face,” it said. The organizer said it had been in talks with the government on how to resolve the issue and details of the refund arrangement would be announced by mid-March. “We will not escape our

Cleaning up mess in Messi’s HK sortie responsibility as organizers and that is why Tatler Asia will offer all those who purchased match-day tickets from the official channels a 50 percent refund,” it said. Tickets for the game cost up to 4,880 Hong Kong dollars ($624) each. In its statement, Tatler Asia said it would refund 56 million Hong Kong dollars ($7.2 million) in total, resulting in a loss of 43 million Hong

Kong dollars ($5.5 million). Before the refund, its net income stood at 13 million Hong Kong dollars ($1.7 million), the organizer said. Tatler Asia on Monday already said it would withdraw an application for funding from the city government for staging the match. In response to the announcement, the Hong Kong government welcomed the arrangement in a statement, calling it as a responsible move. But it said the Hong Kong society still has many questions over the incident, especially after seeing Messi playing actively in Japan, and hoped Inter Miami can provide a reasonable explanation to the public. Inter Miami has not immediately responded to the Associated Press’ request for comment. After the PR disaster erupted on Sunday, Messi had tried to address the widespread disappointment by explaining why he did not play in a news conference in Tokyo. He also said it was regrettable that he could not play in Hong Kong due to an injury on Chinese social media platform Weibo. He said in the post that he hoped to return to Hong Kong to play for his fans and go to mainland China to share the joy of football. But his appearance in the Tokyo match on Wednesday intensified the criticism against his absence beyond Hong Kong, where the government had sought to use the Sunday game to boost the city’s image as a hub for commands in Batangas and Cavite and the Bureau of Fire. The top finishers in the fiveday, three-discipline national championships will be seeded to the national road team that will be harnessed for the Asian championships this year and the Southeast Asian Games that returns to its pre-pandemic schedule of December in 2025 in Thailand. mega events. On Wednesday night, the Global Times said in the editorial that the explanations from Messi and Inter Miami were not convincing and pointed to some speculations about the moves. “One theory is that their actions have political motives, as Hong Kong intends to boost economy through the event and external forces deliberately wanted to embarrass Hong Kong through this incident,” it said. “Judging from the development of the situation, the possibility of this speculation cannot be ruled out.” Pro-Beijing politicians in Hong Kong also weighed in. Regina Ip, a leading member of the Executive Council, Hong Kong’s Cabinet, wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Messi should never be allowed to return to Hong Kong. His lies and hypocrisy are disgusting.” On Weibo, some Chinese social media users said their country does not welcome Messi and asked him not to come again. But others defended Messi by saying he had interacted with Hong Kongers. AP

CHAMPION Jonel Carcueva (center) with silver medalist Jericho Jay Lucero (left) and bronze medalist Ronald Lomotos.

OS ANGELES—The Los Angeles Lakers unveiled a statue of Kobe Bryant on Thursday, honoring their late superstar with a 19-foot bronze likeness outside their downtown arena. The 4,000-pound statue depicts Bryant in his white No. 8 jersey with his right index finger raised as he walked off the court following his 81-point performance against the Toronto Raptors in January 2006. Bryant’s widow, Vanessa, said during the dedication ceremony that the statue is the first of three that will be created to honor the five-time National Basketball Association (NBA) champion and top scorer in Lakers history. Another statue will feature Bryant

in his No. 24 jersey, which he wore for the second half of his career, while a third will depict Bryant and his daughter, Gianna, who died with him and seven others in a helicopter crash in January 2020. “This statue may look like Kobe, but really it’s what excellence looks like,” Kareem Abdul-Jabbar said. “What discipline looks like. What commitment looks like.... It captures a person frozen in time, while at the same time acknowledges that the reason there is a statue in the first place is because that person is timeless. We’re all here today to honor a man who represents not just extraordinary sports achievement, but also timeless values that inspire us all to try harder to be not just

better, but our best.” The first statue was unveiled at a ceremony attended by dozens of Lakers greats and hundreds of season ticket holders. Vanessa Bryant spoke at the ceremony after remarks from team owner Jeanie Buss, former teammate Derek Fisher, Abdul-Jabbar and longtime Lakers coach Phil Jackson. “I think of Kobe constantly, and I miss him and Gigi more than words can say,” Buss said. “But today, I’m filled with joy because in the future, I know fans will gather here in the shade of this statue beside this building where Kobe gave us so many memories, and we will share what he meant to us. As we do so, we will motivate a new generation to emulate the Mamba

Reig targets 2nd title in Sunday’s CamSur triathlon

I

RIENOLD REIG JR. faces a challenging task as he sets his sights on a second triathlon crown in the men’s division of the 5150 Triathlon CamSur set Sunday in Camarines Sur. The highly-anticipated event promises a stellar cast of triathletes ready to tackle the challenging 1.5-km swim, 40-km bike and 10-km run race with the 22-year-old Reig heralding his presence on the local triathlon scene with a spectacular victory in the talentpacked field in the 5150 Subic in 2022. Buoyed by his previous success, the rising Quezon City star exudes confidence as the sport returns to its historic birthplace. His impressive runner-up finish to John Alcala in the demanding 70.3 Ironman, also in Subic, last year serves as a clear indicator of Reig’s preparedness to face seasoned campaigners in the Olympic-distance race, especially on the relatively unfamiliar terrain of Camarines Sur. Organized by The Ironman Group/ Sunrise Events Inc., the event caters to enthusiasts of short-distance but challenging races within a worldclass setup, with the ultimate goal of reaching the prestigious Ironman level. The race will start at the Lago del Rey and culminate in front of the CamSur Convention Center, both situated within the renowned CamSur Water Sports Complex. While the seasoned Jonathan Pagaura looms as a top contender, Reig is positioned not only to vie for the overall championship but also to dominate his age-group category (20-24), which includes Emil Lorbes, Rafael Sawali, Enrico Burgos, Aldrin Pesebre, Denz Velasquez, Ian Consunji, Nicolo Magadia and Christian Vasquez. Pagaura, on the other hand, banners the 25-29 age class, accompanied by formidable athletes such as Jaime Rivera, Paul Adriano, Jefferson Tabernilla, Nikolai Kian and Mark Novallasca. The women’s division adds another layer of excitement, featuring a clash between Erika Burgos and Bea Quiambao, with Sophia Capistrano and Heart Quiambao eager to disrupt the expected title showdown. Adding spice to the event is the Go for Gold Sunrise Sprint, a shorter distance event comprising a 400-meter swim, 20-km bike and 5-km run. Since hosting the first triathlon (70.3) in 2009, CamSur has developed many new facilities and infrastructure to cater to the growing triathlon community with Gov. Luigi Villafuerte expressing enthusiasm, saying: “The province is more than ready, and I am very excited to showcase what CamSur has to offer this time around.” Camarines Sur, with its blend of modern amenities, heritage sites, and old-world charm, has become an adventure travel destination, reflecting its steady progress over the years. For details, visit ironman. com/5150-camsur-register. The 5150 CamSur also features relay events for all-male, all-female and mixed teams. Triathlon’s homecoming has drawn participants from top triathlon countries like Australia, Bahamas, Bermuda, France, Hong Kong, Japan, the Netherlands, Portugal, Portugal, Russian Federation, Singapore and Turkey. Mentality.” Bryant retired in 2016 after a 20-year career spent entirely with the Lakers. He is the fourth-leading scorer in NBA history with 33,643 points, and his accolades included 18 NBA All-Star selections and two NBA Finals MVP awards. His death has scarcely dimmed the shine of his presence in Los Angeles, where he remains a beloved icon of his adopted city. Bryant and his daughter are featured in hundreds of vibrant public murals across the Southland. Even before Bryant’s death, Lakers fans speculated about the pose or image that would be immortalized in his statue. While the announcement of three statues changes the argument, Vanessa Bryant said there shouldn’t be a debate at all: Kobe himself chose the pose for the first statue before his death. AP

IN PLAIN SIGHT By Honoria Sui Contributor

Chinese Filipino culture has deep roots in our country and we will do well to celebrate the community’s diversity and contribution.

I

T is nearly impossible to discount how our cultural knowledge of Chinese Filipinos is deeply embedded in commerce,

stereotypes aside. Many titans of industry we know today are of Chinese descent and some of their family names are familiar and comforting household names that permeate our daily lives. From the malls we go to, restaurants we dine in, the streets we pass by—name it. The Chinese-Filipino community has helped spur the country to progress and prosperity. They contributed to building the nation.

Coming to the Philippines usually from Guangdong and Macau for trade and commerce as early as the 9th century, the Chinese Filipino community was known to establish roots in the country in the 16th century during the era of the Spanish colonization. Coming to the Philippines to find opportunities brought about by the galleon trade, various communities were established in Lu-

zon, the Binondo Chinatown being one of the well-known ones to this day, and there were also those in Iloilo, Camarines Sur, and Cebu. The Chinese engaged in many businesses and were successful with selling hemp or abaca. Aside from being sellers, they became producers and harvesters of hemp. Aside from being traders, they also established tobacco-related businesses, something that isn’t common knowledge to many Filipinos. Parian or Binondo? INITIALLY called “sangleyes” which means “businessmen” or “frequent visitors” by the Spaniards, the Chinese immigrants were then grouped into Parian (those who didn’t convert to Catholicism) and Binondo (those who embraced Christianity). From the second group emerged what we now know as Chinese Mestizos. It wasn’t an easy period for those who had chosen to settle in the Philippines; there was discrimination and violence, but the community plodded on and held onto their resourcefulness for survival and assimilation. Knowing that Filipinos were mainly farmers, the Chinese decided to make the Philippines their home, finding a niche which was providing goods and services that would enrich communities other than their own. This led some members of the Filipino-Chinese community to prosper as they set roots and even acquired property. This demonstrated their desire to be one with the nation and not just expatriates or people of a different ethnicity. Their bid for belonging did not simply end with commerce and industry. In 1898, during the Philippine Revolution, the Chinese Mestizos would identify themselves as Filipino. It must also be known that

a number of our revolutionary leaders were of Chinese lineage. These are Emilio Aguinaldo, Andres Bonifacio, and even Jose Rizal, just to name a few. At the turn of the century, during the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1911, more Chinese from Fujian immigrated to the Philippines. During World War 2, many Chinese joined the Filipino Guerrilla forces to fight against the Japanese. This further fanned the flames of the community’s desire to be recognized as Filipinos. In 19751986, the Chinese who arrived before World War II was allowed or given Filipino Citizenship. The birth of Tsinoy THE 90’s then saw the coining of the term “Tsinoy,” which many of us are familiar with it. This was an initiative by the “Kaisa Para sa Kaunlaran” which aimed to educate Filipinos about the Filipino Chinese community. Aside from demystifying Chinese Filipinos, this was done in response to negative stereotypes Filipinos ascribed to the community. “Tsinoy” encapsulates “Filipino” as identity while “Tsino” serves as a modifier. It could be said now that Tsinoys are Chinese in ethnicity and Filipino by heart. There’s now more Tsinoy representation in the country’s mainstream media. In the 90’s, there was “Pin Pin,” the first Chinese language children’s show on Philippine TV. It was a lighthearted, educational show that focused on Tsinoy life. A blend of Hokkien and Filipino was used on the show, thus making the language more familiar to those who did not speak Chinese. Also, who would forget the “Mano Po” movies? A series of seven films that focused on the customs and traditions of the

Filipino-Chinese community, these movies brought Chinoy culture further into the mainstream. While some may consider these films flawed or even melodramatic, they managed to bring Tsinoy’s representation to a broader audience. These days, it’s still a common perception among Filipinos that Chinoys are exceptionally good at Math and business. The younger generation of Filipino-Chinese have also helped challenge this notion by entering fields that seem atypical to the community. Some have expanded their horizons and from business, have ventured into literature, history, journalism, art, and even entertainment. This generation of Filipino-Chinese are undoubtedly in the mainstream and they’re doing their part in sharing their culture and quashing stereotypes. While coming up with caricatures or latching on to a “token” (prominent items like calligraphy, tikoy, or lanterns) that is so obviously Chinese is a much easier route to take when finding apt descriptions for Chinoys, everyone would do well to see that their identity is much more nuanced than that. Trying to know more about—let alone define what it means to be ChineseFilipino— isn’t all that simple. Understanding contexts from history is important, as this is where meaning is drawn from. Meaning and definition for this community is hidden in plain sight and all we have to do is look a little deeper. – Honoria Sui is a lifestyle writer and communications professional who has led campaigns for prominent brands in education, hospitality, industrial real estate, and FMCG. METAL INDUSTRIES, NEW BUSINESSES SEEN TO THRIVE THIS YEAR OF THE WOOD DRAGON Continued from B1 The need for innovative solutions and innovation drives these industries. CELEBRATING CHINESE NEW YEAR THE QUEZON CITY WAY Maria Teresa Tirona, Quezon City Tourism Department Officer-in-Charge, talks about how Quezon City will be celebrating Chinese New Year this year at a press conference at Quezon City Hall.

T

By Rory Visco Contributor

HROUGH the years, the celebration of Chinese New Year in the country has evolved to become one of the most awaited events in the country and for many reasons. The Philippines is, in geographic terms, the closest to China among Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries, with short distance of about 600 miles separating the two, and ancient stories were even told that land bridges once connected the two countries. Diplomatic relations between the Philippines and China were established back in 1975 and have been described as cordial ever since. There is also a sizable Chinese population here that celebrates Chinese New Year with much pomp and pageantry. This attracted many Pinoys who joined in the celebration the best way they can, even observing the rituals that the Chinese commonly observe such as giving money wrapped in red envelopes called hongbao in Mandarin, lai see in Cantonese, and ang pow in Hokkien, and joining the revelry marked by lion and dragon dances, parades, and of course, fireworks. The date’s significance as an event observed by both Filipinos and Chinese was bolstered further when thenPresident Benigno Aquino III signed Proclamation No. 831 on February 19, 2015, declaring the Chinese New Year as a national holiday. This declaration served as a “testament to solidarity with the Chinese-Filipino community, acknowledging its substantial role and contribution to the nation’s development and history.”

City of Stars

IN Quezon City, also known as the country’s “City of the Stars,” the celebration of Chinese New Year 2024 will be welcomed with much vigor and vitality, a mammoth celebration that will usher in the start of the Chinese Lunar Calendar through the Quezon City Banawe Chinese New Year 2024. Everyone, get ready for Chinese New Year 2024 celebration, Quezon City style! This will be the second time such an event will be held in the city’s tourism district at Banawe Street and other areas surrounding it, declared as the city’s very own Chinatown district through City Ordinance No. 2453-2015. It is touted as the largest in the world with an area occupying a total of 5,919 square kilometers. With the tourism hub’s establishments in Banawe going full force in their participation in this event, at least 10,000 local and foreign tourists are expected to flock to the district. It will also be the first time that the Chinese New Year celebration will be held over the course of three days, from February 9 to February 11, 2024, instead of the usual one day since February 9, the day before the actual date of the Chinese New Year this year, was declared a special non-working holiday. This will give Filipinos and the Chinese community more opportunities to witness events, festivities, celebrations, and other forms of merriment to mark this significant date in Chinese culture. Under the direction of Quezon City Mayor Josefina “Joy” Belmonte, the Quezon City Tourism Department, headed by its Officer-in-Charge Maria Teresa Tirona, curated Quezon City’s

first-ever “Chinatown Heritage Tour” beginning February 9. The tour will have members of the traditional media and social media influencers as participants, and will be led by renowned Chinese tour guide, TV host, comedian and author, Filipino-Chinese Stanley Chi. From their starting point at Mandarin Sky Banawe, a popular Chinese food restaurant, the group will head off to explore notable landmarks in the area such as the Sheng Lian Temple, the Buddhist Humanitarian Organization headquarters of the Tzu Chi Foundation in the country, the Filipino-Chinese Friendship arches called "Paifangs," a traditional yet unique style of Chinese architecture, and the Wow Toy Museum, a true wonderland for the kids and the kids at heart, which showcases a huge collection of more than 17,000 rare toys like robots, cars, action figures, among others, that span several decades from the 1950s up to the present. Some of the district’s culinary masterpieces will also get the chance to give the tour participants a taste of Chinese gustatory delights that they offer through a “food crawl.” There, tour participants will get a chance to taste food that is not only delicious but also nice to look at, truly a feast for the senses. Among the other activities lined up during the three-day Chinese New Year extravaganza is the QC Chinatown Food, Arts, and Crafts fair that will highlight various booths that sell Chinese delicacies, lucky charms and unique artisanal products. Capping the first day’s events is an enthralling acoustic performance by none other than singer and actress Lirah Bermudez. A Lion and Dragon Dance through the different establishments in the area will kick off the second day, to be followed by the Chinatown Float Parade, Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Demonstration and the program proper at 4 pm to be held in the vicinity of Z Square Mall along Banawe Corner Del Monte Avenue. The formal program will feature messages from Belmonte herself, with inspirational messages coming from Joaquin Co, President of the QC Association of FilipinoChinese Businessmen, Inc., Charles Chen, Chairman of the QC Chinatown Development Foundation, Inc., and Dr. Cecilio Pedro, who is the President of the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. Cultural performances are always the highlight of every Chinese New Year celebration in the country, and for the Quezon City Banawe Chinese New Year 2024, featured are actor-model Jake Cuenca, Filipino indie-alternative rock band Autotelic, song and dance numbers by the Philippine Cultural College and the Philippine Institute of Quezon City, and the popular QC Symphonic Band. Closing the festivities will be remarks from Quezon City Vice Mayor Gian Carlo Sotto, followed by a grand fireworks display. “These festivities signify our commitment to promoting Banawe as a place to enjoy our unique Filipino-Chinese heritage through a variety of cultural attractions. Local and foreign tourists can take part in many delightful activities during the three-day celebration,” Belmonte said in a statement. The celebration, she added, will also be a golden opportunity for fellow Filipinos to broaden their knowledge of the rich cultural heritage of our Chinese brothers and sisters.

How to attract love this Lunar New Year

A

By Roderick L. Abad Contributor

FTER letting go of “the old you” by bidding adieu to bad habits or attitudes that brought negative vibes to your 2023, spend 2024 with the “new you” plus your newfound love. “At Bumble, we help people find romance by providing a platform to meet genuine connections,” said Lucille McCart, Asia Pacific communications director of Bumble. Inviting single Filipinos to “manifest the love you want,” the women-first dating and social networking app reveals its six feng shui tips, in collaboration with Singapore-born, Londonbased TikTok viral geomancer Cliff Tan (@dearmodern), that could help them attract a new romance by simply rearranging the furniture in their personal space, in time for Valentine’s Day which falls within the Lunar New Year period. Making room for love this Lunar New Year WHILE moving things inside your crib doesn’t do any magic for a lover to enter your life, creating a

conducive environment will give good luck and bring you in the mood for love. Based on Dating Trends 2024 research conducted by Bumble from September 21 to 26, 2023, 63 percent of 26,849 Filipinas surveyed said they intend to enter the new year with a vivid outlook of what they want in their romantic lives. Per the study, singles are reframing how they go on a date to better protect their mental health, with almost half (49 percent) of respondents actively into “slow-dating” and being considerate on how much they are dating to ensure quality over

quantity, even more so amongst women (56 percent). As a headstart, Tan suggests making a sitting area in the room for you to take a break so as to discover your own intangible needs and allow them to happen in your space. Creating a balance SINCE love is shared by two people, it’s important to create a balance by rearranging the furniture to give way to tables topped with lamps on both sides of the bed. If there is not enough space to put the bed in the center, he recommends placing it in a corner but

having items that represent space for two like a loveseat or two chairs. Make a space for someone to enter your life. The feng shui master hints that it’s good to clear and organize the room to free it from any clutter and prepare to accommodate new things. It’s not only enjoyable to have a tidy and clean room, but also allow positive energy to flow freely and stay within your space. Next is to set the ambiance for you to think of heart matters. Tan advises the use of indirect, soft lighting, or even candles to create a warm and enticing atmo-

sphere. Color-wise, pink works well. So look for salt lamps or opt for a rose hue for your beddings and accessories. Special spot DOING such ancient Chinese traditional practice won’t be complete sans a special spot for things that are reminiscent of the beauty of love. The Love Corner in Feng Shui usually is an area visible from the bed and deep inside the room away from the entrance, where objects symbolizing love are placed. He points out that a pair of mandarin ducks, a rose crystal,

or flowers are conventional elements, but feel free to use anything that makes you drool with love. Lastly, embrace freshness. Akin to having a clean slate for the Lunar New Year, begin opening your heart by simply removing items you don’t need anymore. According to a previous study, nine out of 10 Filipinos are willing to part ways with gifts from their exes. Given this, the geomancer shared that no matter how pretty those presents or how these memorable photos are, it’s better to remove and store them away. He added that a fresh, neutral space free from the heaviness of the past will be of big help to move on and start anew this year. “With 2024 looking to be the ‘year of self’ as predicted by Bumble’s latest Dating Trends report, we hope that our community will be able to use these tips to not only spring clean and refresh their personal spaces, but to also understand that opening yourself up to new connections can be as easy as removing items that don’t serve you anymore,” McCart said. “As the saying goes, out with the old and in with the new. Sometimes little changes really can open us up to finding love or other kinds of romance. Ultimately, dating should be fun, so embrace the potential of new, healthy connections by taking some of these small steps to help you refresh your personal space in 2024,” she added.

HOW NINA IS SEIZING LIFE’S PROMISE THROUGH HER ARTWORKS, ADVOCACY

The acrylic on canvas piece titled “ULAM” uses unique shapes to form abundant produce and was commissioned for the food business unit head of Nestle Philippines.

N

INA was only three years old when she was diagnosed with autism. Despite the initial pain of shattered dreams upon learning of her condition, her parents resolved to love her even more and help her become the best that she can be. This love nurtured and paved the way for their daughter to fully realize her gift. As a child, Nina struggled to speak and when she finally did, she still could not fully express herself. What she lacked in verbal articulation, however, she more than made up for with her immense talent in drawing, sketching, and painting. Her passion for art grew and she began creating masterpieces of color that captured her vivid imagination and displayed her enormous creativity and artistry.

The artist Nina Bantoto

Fast forward to now, she is a thriving 27-yearold international artist who has held several exhibits at the United Nations and the Philippine consulate in New York, Macau, and the Philippines. Her favorite mediums to use for her pieces are acrylic paints, watercolor, charcoal, and colored pencils, and recently, she has also started creating digital works of art. To celebrate her 27th year, Nina will be holding a solo exhibit titled “Enter

the Dragon” until February 15, 2024 at the prestigious Galerie Joaquin at the Podium Mall in Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong City. The exhibit will showcase her fascination with the Chinese Zodiac animals that is perfectly suited to the coming Year of the Dragon. Everyone is welcome to experience Nina’s world of colors, music and imagination. She is a ray of sunshine who brings hope, happiness, and the freshness of a new day. Since 2010, Nina’s artworks have been recognized and put on display in several publications and exhibits both locally and internationally. Her big break came in 2017 when she became part of a select group of artists with autism that represented the country in the United Nations in celebration of the World Autism Day. They also had their works featured on Piña and in a fashion show by renowned designer Patis Tesoro at the Philippine Embassy in New York. Nina had her first solo exhibit “Chiquitita” in 2018 that displayed her sensational works that depicted a spectrum of ideas, from fun Disney characters to sophisticated Sarimanok. A portion of the proceeds from this exhibit was donated to REACH Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Mandaluyong City that is dedicated to helping Persons with Disabilities from depressed communities. Through her art, Nina and her parents were able to help uplift others by establishing Arte Autismo Filipino (AAF) in 2019. AAF is a social enterprise composed of parents and their artistic children with autism. To date, it has put together several exhibits and projects to showcase and sell the works of the artists. Nina’s works have also been printed on merchandise such as clothing, ecobags, greeting cards, stationary, and stickers for her brand SPECIAL HANDS BY NINA that support other NGOs and inspire many others—using her amazing talent to give back to those in need. Truly, every stroke of her brush has been a gift.
