MoCAF eyes expansion ‘outside festival walls’ in 2nd year

MOCAF’S Festival chairman Ricky Francisco and festival director Coleen Wong

IN its bid to engage the younger audience, the Modern and Contemporary Art Festival, or MoCAF, rolls out a series of pocket events leading to its 2nd edition, happening from July 28 to 30 at the Fairmont Hotel, Makati.

“MoCAF XP” presents a string of immersive activities every Saturday of July ahead of the festival opening. The series kicked off over the weekend with the MoCAF Art Bazaar at XCEPTION in Legazpi Village, Makati. Next up this Saturday, July 8, is the MoCAF Painting Workshop at Art Caravan in BGC. Then, on July 15, the MoCAF Printmaking Workshop welcomes printmaking enthusiasts at Commune in Poblacion, Makati.

“This 2023, we intend to expand MoCAF by having different events outside the festival walls,” Festival Director Coleen Wong said. “We are still standing by the community but reaching out to a wider range of younger audiences. It gives an opportunity to not just empower and inspire the youth but also give a chance for the ever-growing art community to flourish.”

Festival Chairman Ricky Francisco added that the MoCAF XP caters to members of the growing community who believe art should be more inclusive.

“They believe that art shouldn’t be just on the walls—it should be something that’s part of life and something that everyone can enjoy. So, this year, we’re starting with MoCAF XP, which is a different take,” Francisco said.

Inclusivity, after all, serves as a focal point of MoCAF 2023 (www.mocaf.net). Wong said that the group has collaborated with both established and emerging galleries and artists, all presented with the same platform to showcase their works. Catering to a wider audience is also part of MoCAF’s efforts to make art more accessible, particularly to the youth.

“We want to reach out to younger people because we want a future that is more into art,” Francisco said. “We’re hoping that more people will enjoy art for the variety and breadth that there is to offer.” success. Meanwhile, to be featured in a group show are Distort Monsters, Doktor Karayom, Zuh Dai, Christian Tamondong, and Angelica So. This year’s festival will also see the return of MoCAF Discoveries, a special exhibition dedicated to
