HE numbers are staggering, despite having been repeated so often, in stories of disasters around the globe, for the past eight years. At least 6,000 lives lost, another 30,000 people injured. Nine provinces in the Visayas devastated. And billions in public infrastructure, business and private property destroyed.
Can people ever tire of using superlatives in recalling Haiyan (local name Yolanda), that super cyclone that stunned the world in November 2013, and gave activists at the coincidental global climate change conference then a human face to illustrate the real toll of unbridled destruction of the planet? Perhaps they never will. After all, this year’s commemoration of Haiyan coincided, once more, with the COP26, or the conference of parties in Glasgow. It was marked, as expected, by a lot of fingerpointing and blame-tossing; by an abundance of rhetoric and solemn promises, even from those who in the past abetted the steady, speedy march of the planet’s warming, nearer an abyss where 1 degree of temperature rise can spell death.
Long road
THE words come easy in global forums like in Glasgow this week, but the real reckoning with disaster takes many years. Stressing that disaster recovery encompasses a range of phases, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) said last week that restoring order in a community and regaining normalcy is not that easy. With all the accomplishments in helping rebuild communities and restore normalcy in millions of lives, PRC stressed that disaster recovery is a “marathon—not a sprint.”
That is why, according to PRC, almost a decade after Haiyan, they are still working hard and working tirelessly alongside their partners in helping communities build back stronger, healthier, and more resilient to future disasters. “Eight years ago today, one of the most powerful storms ever recorded in our planet’s history, and the most destructive in our nation’s history, made landfall in the Philippines, devastating nine of our provinces, Palawan, Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Cebu, Iloilo, Leyte, Eastern and Western Samar,” the PRC said in recalling how Typhoon Haiyan, locally known as Supertyphoon Yolanda, took more than 6,000 Filipino lives, injuring 30,000 individuals, destroying countless homes, bridges, schools, farms and businesses in its wake.

THE urgent plea for climate justice was marked in the comprehensive statement issued by the Philippine delegation head, Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez III, who noted before world leaders that the Philippines is sinking four times faster than the global average rate, and yet accounts for a tiny fraction of global warming and pollution. For militant churches, Haiyan’s anniversary is a “reminder to take a scaled-up action from the government and world leaders.” In a statement, the National Council of Churches in the Philippines (NCCP), the country’s biggest aggrupation of mainline Protestant and non-Roman Catholic churches, renewed its commitment to support disaster survivors and climate-vulnerable communities in time for the eighth anniversary of Haiyan destruction in 2013 and the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland. “Eight years after the Typhoon Yolanda landfall, we still call for justice. Since then, we have experienced typhoons and extreme weather events with almost the same destructive impacts as that of Typhoon Yolanda—a glaring indication that we no longer have to wait for a few more years to feel the climate crisis,” said NCCP General Secretary Bishop Reuel Norman O. Marigza. “These experiences should have pushed the government to scale up disaster mitigation, ecological protection, and climate-change adaptation. PRC has demonstrated that we could gather aid from almost all the Red Cross and Red Crescent societies worldwide and distribute them accordingly to the affected provinces,” said PRC Chairman and CEO Sen. Richard Gordon. “Our Haiyan operations reinforce the Red Cross as the go-to organization and the preferred partner of choice since we were able to get the job done,” Gordon added. Initially, the PRC delivered relief in the form of food, water, medical care, emergency shelter materials, and cash-as-aid projects. Days, weeks, months and even years later, the PRC led a huge contingent of Partner National Societies to roll out its recovery operations. These included the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Committee of the Red Cross, Swiss Red Cross, Finnish Red Cross, Spanish Red Cross, Singapore Red Cross, German Red Cross, Hong Kong Red Cross, Australian Red Cross, Italian Red Cross, British Red Cross, Korean Red Cross, Japan Red Cross, Taiwan Red Cross, French Red Cross, American Red Cross, Qatar Red Crescent, Netherlands Red Cross, and Norwegian Red Cross. Through the years, the PRC
helped thousands of affected families to stand up on their feet after the life-altering superstorm— helping them get back their livelihood and build safer and more disaster-resilient homes and classrooms; and ensuring access to improved health and sanitation facilities and services. During the PRC’s Haiyan Emergency Phase, from November 8, 2013, to March 30, 2014, the premier humanitarian organization provided food items to more than 1.9 million individuals or roughly 390,399 families. Nonfood items such as plastic mats, blankets, mosquito nets, water containers, tarpaulins and kitchen sets were also given to more than 1.2 million individuals or 258,972 families. The PRC supported 90,779 families (equivalent to 453,895 individuals) with cash assistance of P281 million from December 2013 to March 2014. Eight years in the running, the PRC has already built 80,207 shelters for families affected in Leyte including Ormoc City; in Western and Eastern Samar, Cebu, Capiz, Aklan, Antique, Iloilo and Palawan. At least 62,676 households received livelihood assistance through cash grants and livelihood training. their houses are, who lives in there. We can produce a list.” Cash livelihood assistance was also granted to 62,676 households, while livelihood training was provided to 15,985 individuals. The PRC also provided Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities to 116 schools. It constructed 1,168 community-based WASH facilities as well; repaired 94 health facilities and conducted health-related promotional awareness campaigns for 64,650 people. The Red Cross Haiyan operations also reconstructed 536 classrooms and distributed 8,375 school kits. The PRC also established the PRC Vocational Training Center in Leyte, the PRC Regional Logistic and Disaster Management Training Center in Passi City, and a blood facility in Bogo City. Myrna Cinco, one of those affected by the typhoon, said, in Filipino, “Were it not for Red Cross, we wouldn’t have a house to live in.” “Recovery has no shortcuts, this is why we will continue to work hand in hand with our partners for a better future, ” said Gordon.
Before the storm
ACTUALLY, the work of humanitarian groups like PRC began days before Haiyan hit land. Early on November 2, as soon as it was known that the tropical storm was making its way to Philippine shores from Micronesia, Gordon mobilized the Philippine Red Cross chapters to plan, prepare and predict for the catastrophe that lay ahead. At the Red Cross Operations Center, they texted all stakeholders to provide
relief as the country braced itself for the calamity. Over the next few days, the storm rapidly intensified into a typhoon, finally making landfall with sustained winds of up to 315 kph, with howling gusts and forceful sheets of rain wreaking devastation everywhere. A typical survivor’s ordeal was told by a young radio employee in Tacloban, who clung, suspended, for four hours to an overhead steel truss, the only one that remained after Haiyan destroyed their radio station. “For four hours, it felt like a thousand needles piercing my skin, and then I realized this was sand” being hurled with force by the storm surge, along with the sheets of rain and ocean spray, said the young writer, who had to deal with the trauma for years. Still, she felt lucky, because two of her coworkers died. When it passed, more than 18 million individuals were affected, including 4 million displaced, 30,000 left injured, and 6,300 who died. Up to now, more than 1,500 people are still counted among the missing. P1.1 billion worth of homes were destroyed and sources of livelihood were decimated, per PRC data. The Philippine Red Cross led a humanitarian caravan of rescue equipment, ambulances, payloaders, water tankers and transport vehicles carrying relief goods into the affected areas on November 11, 2013. The death and destruction was so horrific that Gordon recalled telling the Partner Societies, “I brought you hear to save lives. I am sorry that now you have to pick up bodies.” The most immediate task then, Red Cross recalled, was to rescue the living, administer first aid, and provide food, shelter, clothing, hygiene facilities, and psychosocial support. Hot meals, tents and emergency shelter repair kits, portalets and
water, kitchen sets, sleeping sets and clothes were distributed with haste, while Red Cross personnel went through the provinces providing mental health programs for the forlorn and shocked people, and helping families scattered during the storm to reunite. Red Cross staff and volunteers in payloaders and firetrucks moved through the areas carefully plucking bodies of the dead from the debris, placing them in body bags which went into refrigerated vans, and started the identification process. They then commenced clearing roads and throughways of all signs of devastation. Among others, the German Red Cross flew in relief items through Mactan Airport, the IFRC provided 230,000 families with household items, the Chinese Red Cross helped the Philippine Red Cross build 166 classrooms in Leyte, and the Indonesian Red Cross provided a helicopter to airlift a patient from Tacloban to a Cebu health facility. Dozens of international humanitarian missions from around the world came to the Philippines days after Haiyan, conducting medical procedures, stress debriefing, giving relief and helping provide vital amenities like clean water and hygienic washrooms. The UN launched an emergency fundraising for Haiyan victims, drawing in millions of dollars of vital aid in the first few days after the monster cyclone. Looking back on the typhoon that the world will forever associate with the worst impacts of climate change, one thing brings hope to those who faced it up close: the strength, faith and kindness of Filipinos, and of the strangers who came to their aid from other parts of the country. PRC’s Gordon puts it thus: “The resilience of the Filipino is unprecedented. Despite the death and devastation, we found deliverance. Rehabilitation and repair with the help of our movement partners has been successful. Disaster is not insurmountable with passion and commitment, both of which were provided by the Red Cross. We continue to support these communities even eight years after Yolanda hit these bucolic towns and cities. With focus, fast action, flexibility, friendliness, and being forwardlooking, the Philippine Red Cross is poised to serve as it is always first, always ready, and always there.”

Malampaya shutdown prompts Meralco to hike Nov power rates

he shutdown of the Malampaya gas facility last month hiked electricity rates by P0.3256 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to P9.4630 per kWh in November from P9.1374 per kWh in October, the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) announced Friday. This month’s power rate adjustment is equivalent to an increase of around P65 in the total bill of a residential customer consuming 200 kWh. The Malampaya shutdown from October 2 to 25 led to an increase in generation charge, a major component of an electricity bill. The November generation charge went up by P0.2911 per kW h to P5.3346 per kWh from P5.0435 per kWh the previous month. Meralco explained that the Malampaya facility maintenance shutdown resulted to lesser available supply in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM). The tight supply condition in the Luzon grid led to higher WESM prices at P1.7073 per kWh and trig-
gered the WESM secondary price cap on September 30, October 1, October 21 and 22. The Luzon grid was also placed on Yellow Alert on October 20 due to forced outages of several power plants. Charges from Independent Power Producers (IPPs) also increased by P0.8186 per kWh. C h a r g e s f r o m Po w e r S u p p l y Agreements (PSAs), on the other hand, went down by P0.2841 per kWh mainly due to higher excess energy deliveries, which are priced at a discount, from AC Energy, First Gen Hydro Power, San Miguel Energy and South Premiere Power. The new PSA of Meralco with the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp. (PSALM) also contributed to the decrease in the PSA rate. WESM, IPPs and PSAs accounted for 13.9, 37.4, and 48.7 percent, respectively, of Meralco’s energ y requirement. Meralco utility economics head Lawrence Fernandez said this month’s
generation charge increase would have been significantly higher, but Meralco took the initiative to cushion the impact in the bills of its customers. He explained that the generation charge increase is around 29 centavos/ kW h. T his wou ld have been higher, at around 81-centavos/ kWh, but a portion of the increase will instead be deferred to the next four months. “The difference of 52 centavos per kWh will be amortized and added to the December, January, February and March bills at a rate of around 13-centavos per kWh, or 52-centavos divided by four,” Fernandez explained. Meralco said it coordinated with some of its suppliers to defer collection of portions of their generation costs. These deferred charges w ill subsequently be billed on a staggered ba si s over t he ne x t fou r months as directed by the Energ y Regulator y Commission (ERC). Meralco’s continued implementation of the Distribution Rate TrueUp refund, which began in March
2021, also helped temper the overall increase. The refund rate for residential customers is at P0.2761 per kWh. It can be recalled that the ERC provisionally approved Meralco’s proposal to refund around P13.9 billion over a period of 24 months or until the amount is fully refunded. This amount represented the difference between the Actual Weighted Average Tariff and the ERC-approved Interim Average Rate for distribution-related charges for the period July 2015 to November 2020. Meanwhile, transmission charge for residential customers decreased by P0.0403 per kWh due to lower Ancillary Service and Power Delivery Service charges. Taxes, system loss and other charges, registered an increase of P0.0748 per kWh. T he collection of the Universal Charge-Environmental Charge amounting to P0.0025 per kW h remains suspended, as directed by the ERC.

he Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) opened more slots for passport applicants for November and December 2021 before noon on Friday. However, its web site for individual passport appointments www. passport.gov.ph crashed minutes after DFA Undersecretary Brigido Dulay announced it on Twitter. Du lay sa id more slots were opened in all their consular offices
and ma lls or temporar y off-site passport ser v ices (TOPS) starting November 19. “We’ve opened appointment slots for November and December 2021 in all consular offices and TOPS. January and February 2022 still to be opened. Earliest available date this morning is November 19th,” Dulay wrote on his Twitter. The BusinessMirror tried to access the passport application site and experienced intermittent access issues and occasional systems crash.
When reached to comment, DFA Assistant Secretary for Public and Cultural Diplomacy Eduardo Meñez said the Office of Consular Affairs is aware of the glitch besetting the online site for passport applicants. “OC A [Office of Consular A ffairs] is addressing the issue and asks for the public’s patience and understanding, and hopes to solve this soon,” Meñez said. The DFA has been experiencing a deluge of passport requests, compounded by systems issues with
their online passport site as well as human error on the part of passport applicants for the past months. Dulay earlier reported that they have about 30,000 backlog in passport application. Last Tuesday, the DFA has also taken down its other web site that is used to track the passport delivery due to potential data breach. The DFA, meanwhile, has appealed to the public to refrain from seeking the help or patronize online scammers.

he Apec (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Business Adv isor y Cou nc i l (A BAC) stressed the call to ramp up the Covid-19 vaccination drives among member-countries as this will allow reopening of the borders. “This year, we’ve all had to focus on overcoming the challenge of the pandemic. And we have plenty to say about this in the report, particularly about the need to use vaccination to drive the future conditions for border reopening,” ABAC Chairman Rachel Taulelei said during the recent Apec meeting. Apec member-countries recently renewed their stance against vaccine export restrictions, highlighting the need to boost efforts in securing much-needed Covid-19 jabs. In addition, they have enhanced trade facilitation for Covid-19 vaccines and other essential goods since June. Some economies even have kept zero to low taxes for vaccines and other medical supplies. The regional bloc also previously suggested waiving the intellectual property protection for Covid-19 vaccines if this can help accelerate
the production and inoculation. “We are drawn at this point to think even more widely about when our economies are required to begin the much-needed process of economic recovery,” Taulelei said. As such, the Apec ministers highlighted the need to promote sustainability, agreeing to stop funding fossil fuel subsidies and reinvigorating their commitments to net-zero or carbon neutrality initiatives. In relation to this, the leaders stressed the urgency of shifting to more renewable-energy resources as well. The Apec members also wanted to further promote an inclusive economy, tackling the concerns over the disadvantaged groups to help them have greater participation in the value chain. With this, the ministers vowed to continue strengthening information sharing to boost upskilling and re-skilling of the work force. This, in addition to crafting training programs for those seeking job opportunities. “ These are recommendations for our time. GIR grows to $107.95B in end-Oct–BSP

ng Pilipinas (BSP) reported that the country’s gross international reserves (GIR) hit $107.95 billion in end-October this year. This is a recovery from the dip in September to $106.6 billion. It i s a l so h ig her t h a n t he
$103.8-billion GIR level of the country in October last year. The country’s GIR is the level of foreign exchange holdings managed by the Central Bank during a given period. The GIR is a crucial component of the economy as it is often used to manage the country’s foreign exchange rate against excess volatility. The BSP said the current level of the countr y’s GIR represents a “more than adequate” external l iqu id it y bu f fer equ iva lent to 10.8 months’ worth of imports of goods and payments of ser vices and primar y income. It is also about 7.8 times the country’s short-term external debt based on original maturity and 5.4 times based on residual maturity. In a news statement, the Central
Bank attributed the increase in the GIR level to the national government’s (NG) net foreign currency deposits with the BSP and upward adjustment in the value of the BSP’s gold holdings due to the increase in the price of gold in the international market. Data showed that the country’s gold holdings hit $9.13 billion in October, up from the $8.85 billion in the previous month. Earlier this year, BSP Governor Benjamin Diokno said the countr y’s strong external position—particularly the countr y’s strong GIR position—allows the countr y to manage the impact of shocks, including market reaction over a pending move of the US Federal Reser ve to normalize its monetar y policy.
Oil firms bounce back to profitability in Sept

IL firms returned to profitability at end-September this year as they recovered from the challenges brought about by the pandemic since last year. Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation reported Friday its net income stood at P3.4 billion by end September, a reversal from a P13.9 billion loss in the same period last year. This despite the mobility slowdown resulting from the two-week enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) implemented in the National Capital Region (NCR) and select provinces last August, and the succeeding Alert 4 restriction. “Our renewed strategy has been proven effective for our business to thrive amidst the resurgence of selected lockdowns in the country. We are continuously growing our capacity for the remainder of 2021, to prepare for the near and mediumterm demand pick-up as active new Covid cases decline, vaccination programs accelerate, and travel restrictions ease,” said Pilipinas Shell President Cesar Romero. W hile marketing volume declined in the third quarter by 6 percent due to increased lockdowns, the oil firm’s successful marketing programs and premium product offerings across businesses helped boost its overall financial performance. It reported that mobility’s premium fuel penetration increased to 31 percent; lubricants business grew by 36 percent; and aviation volumes recovered over 60 compared to the same period last year, driven by an increase in passenger flights as domestic and international flight restrictions ease. Pilipinas Shell said its P2.2-billion capital expenditure program (capex) is on track, approximately 68
percent of which is spent on network expansion. It was able to put up 25 new mobility sites from January to September this year. The rest was used for supply chain maintenance and upgrades in preparation for demand resurgence. Meanwhile, Phoenix Petroleum Philippines Inc.’s January to September net income shot up to P170 million, a turnaround from the P95 million net loss posted a year ago. Bulk of the P170 million was recorded in the second quarter at P132 million. In the third quarter of this year, Phoenix continued to exceed prepandemic volume despite stricter mobility restrictions during the period. Revenues shoot up by 81 percent year-on-year while net operating income grew by 78 percent year-on-year to P1.64 billion. Year-to-date overall volume also rose 33 percent from the prior year led by growth in the domestic B2B segment and the overseas trading business. Also, its liquefied petroleum gas sales grew 35 percent behind a steady growth in cylinder sales accelerated by the increasing contribution from the new canister business. Meanwhile, overseas volume increased 37 percent driven by growth in the trading business. “We are proud of the sustained growth in the third quarter. This is the product of the team’s hard work for the past 18 months as we position the business stronger during the pandemic, and aim for growth as the economy emerges from it,” said Phoenix President and Chief Executive Officer Henry Albert Fadullon. Lopez said he will formally file his certificate of candidacy on Friday under the Comelec “rules of substitution” from mayoral candidate Calvin Punzalan. His running mate is actor Raymond Bagatsing. Atty. Unvaccinated employees, who will be on on-site duty would be required to reg ularly take Reverse Transcription-Poly merase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) “at their own expense.” If there is insufficient RT-PCR capacity or not immediately available, the said unvaccinated workers may resort to antigen test. I ATF stressed firms may not terminate their workers solely for being unvaccinated. I ATF Resolution 148 -B a lso allows public and private establishments, except frontline and emergency ser vices, to “validly refuse entr y and/or deny ser vice to individuals, despite being eligible for vaccination.” The said policies will take effect on December 1, 2021 after IATF Resolution 148-B is published in a newspaper of general circulation.

HE A klan government has finally reached the goal to immuni ze a subst a nt ia l number of the residents on Boracay Island against the dreaded Covid-19, making the crown jewel of Philippine tourism ripe for reopening to inter national tourists. “Boracay has ac hieved herd immunity,” declared A k lan Gov. Florencio Miraf lores in a text message to the BusinessMirror on Friday. Data from the Department of Tourism (DOT) showed, as of November 11, 2021, about 71 percent or 17,287 of the island ’s projected population of 34,930 have already received their second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, while 97.24 percent or 23,775 have received their first jabs. The local chief executive also confirmed, “Starting November 16, we will allow fully vaccinated tourists to travel to Boracay,” and no longer require a negative RTPCR test. Tourists only need to present a vaccination certificate from the Department of Health/ Department of Information and C o m m u n i c a t i o n Te c h n o l o g y ( Va x xCertPH) or from their respective local government units. Miraf lores said he would release the executive order on the new guideline within the day. Tourism stakeholders, many of who have yet to fully recover from the closure of the island in 2018, met the news positively. Diony Salme, chairman of the Boracay Foundation Inc. said in Ilong go, “It is good news for us, as long as tourists are required to present their vaccination certificate and ever yone will follow the health and safety protocols. On our end, our residents are about 96 percent vaccinated and our island ’s tourism workers are nearly 100 percent vaccinated. So we are fully protected as well.” DOT reported as of November 11, 94.22 percent or 12,068 of the
estimated 12,809 tourism workers on the island have already received their second jabs against Covid, while over 100 percent or 12,834 received their first jabs.

Meanwhile , Miraf lores sa id they preparing to open the Catic l a n A i r por t to i nter n at ion a l tourists via charter f lights “ if the IATF [Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases] allow it.” The DOT has already been discussing with the private sector the opening of international gateways to the Philippines through select leisure destinations like Bohol, Mactan, Clark, and Manila, which have existing international airports, following the Phuket Sandbox model. In the case of Boracay, it is three hours away from the K alibo International A ir port, but private tour operators have confirmed that there have been inquiries from China, Taiwan and South Korea for possible charter f lights direct to Caticlan. DOT Assistant Secretary Chris Morales said the possibility of using Caticlan/Boracay as a gateway is still being evaluated. “Perhaps when [inter nationa l] entr y requirements are already fixed… it is still being assessed by the Department of Health and the Technical Advisor y Group [of the I ATF],” he stressed. In a news statement, the DOT welcomed the announcement of Miraf lores, say ing Boracay recorded “a dramatic increase in tourist arrivals in the last two months,” reaching 32,452 visitors in October alone. “We hope to see even more visitors for the months of November and December, given this positive development, and ensure ever yone’s safety altogether now that Boracay’s tour ism workers are fully vaccinated,” said the DOT.

China achieves new ‘historical starting point’ after Xi resolution

hina has reached a new “historical starting point” led by Xi Jinping Thought, senior Communist Party officials said, after top leaders paved the way for him to rule indefinitely by signing off on the first historical resolution in 40 years. Xi’s new doctrine on party history didn’t focus on past “wrongs” because these had been settled in previous documents, officials said at a briefing Friday morning in Beijing. Instead, it summarized the party’s achievements to unite the will and action of the party, officials said. The full text of the resolution hasn’t been released yet. Only Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping have authored such a doctr ine and both went on to
dominate politics until they died. A communique from this week ’s plenum said the party should implement Xi’s resolution to meet party goals through 2049, another sign that he’s likely to seek a third term during a twice-a-decade party congress next year. At the briefing, officials covered a wide range of topics, mostly reiterating previous policy statements from Xi and other top party officials. German leader says people have duty to get vaccinated

ELLINGTON, New Zealand—German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Friday that people have a duty to get vaccinated against the coronavirus to protect others. She spoke as Germany grapples with a new surge of infections, which reached a record daily high of 50,000 on Thursday. Merkel talked for 30 minutes with New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern in a free-ranging virtual discussion on the sidelines of the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) forum. New Zealand is hosting Apec and although Germany is not a member, Ardern said she’s long admired Merkel, who will soon leave office. “This virus is very, very tough,” Merkel said. She said it was an enormous scientific achievement to produce vaccines within a year of the outbreak, but that officials still weren’t reaching a group of unvaccinated people. “You have the right to get vaccinated,” Merkel said. “But, to a certain extent, you also, as a member of society, have the duty to be vaccinated to protect yourself and to protect others.” About two-thirds of Germany’s 83 million people are fully vaccinated but the nation has resisted making vaccinations mandatory
for certain workers. Lawmakers are considering new measures in the face of the latest surge. During their discussion, both Merkel and Ardern expressed their frustration in the rise of disinformation on social media. “In the old days, we had certain events that happened in our society. Television reported about it and the next day everyone talked about it,” Merkel said. “Today, everyone participates in his or her own social media. You only engage in a bubble that you meet on the Internet.” If there was any advice she could give to future leaders, Merkel said, it would be to try to understand the perspectives of others and what prompts them to act in they way they do. Ardern said one of the lessons she’d learned from the pandemic was to get people and companies engaged with trying to find solutions by presenting them with the data and showing them the problem. She said everybody had been learning about the virus as it spread. “Literally, you’re building the plane whilst trying to fly,” Ardern said. n the night before his 74th birthday, Mario Draghi spent almost four hours with Emmanuel Macron on a terrace overlooking the Mediterranean. Over a dinner of sea bass in the port city of Marseille, the former European Central Bank chief compared notes with the French president, who’s become the most aggressive proponent of European Union integration. As the clocks ticked past midnight on September 2, waiters emerged with a cake that Macron had ordered. The advisers waiting on the sidelines for them to wrap up cheered. The tete-a-tete is a sign of the deep bond that’s formed between the two leaders since Draghi became prime minister of Italy in Febr uar y. With A ngela Merkel preparing to step down as German chancel lor after some 16 years in power, the two men have a chance to fill the gap she leaves and wield more inf luence over EU policy on ever ything from the economy to defense. Draghi has spent almost 10 hours in bilateral meetings with Macron, longer than he has with any other Group of 20 leader, and they’ve informally agreed to speak before key summits to coordinate positions, according to people familiar with the matter. On Friday, they will discuss the future of Libya at a conference in Paris. “Draghi and Macron really see eye-to-eye on European integration, including fiscal union,” said

The two leaders’ views on China and Russia also converge, and they’re becoming more closely aligned on Libya. They concocted the idea of hosting a conference to discuss ways of stabilizing the North African country during one of their first meetings, an Elysee official said. The gathering will be attended by US Vice President Kamala Harris. Russia sends nuclear-capable bombers on patrol over Belarus

OSCOW—Russia sent two nuclear-capable strategic bombers on a training mission over Belarus for a second straight day on Thursday in a strong show of Moscow’s support for its ally amid a dispute over migration at the Polish border. The Belarusian Defense Ministry said two Russian Tu-160 strategic bombers practiced bombing runs at the Ruzany firing range, located in Belarus about 60 kilometers east of the border with Poland. As part of the joint training, Belarusian fighter jets simulated an intercept, the ministry said. The missions marked the second time in two days that Russia sent its nuclear-capable bombers into the skies over Belarus. A pa ir of Russian Tu-22M3 long-range bombers f lew a similar patrol on Wednesday, and Belarusian air defense assets practiced intercepting them. The Belarusian Defense Ministry said that such Russian bomber flights would be conducted on a regular basis. The Russian military said the bombers spent over 4 1/2 hours in the air during the mission intended to buttress the countries’ alliance. It said the bomber patrol “wasn’t aimed against any third countries.” But Russia’s deputy UN ambassador, Dmitry Polyansky, told reporters at UN headquarters in New York that “it is a response to a massive build-up on the Polish-Belarusian border. Russia has strongly supported Belarus amid a tense standoff this week as thousands of migrants and refugees, most of them from the Middle East, gathered on the Belarusian side of the border with Poland in the hope of crossing into Western Europe. Polyansky pointed to the union
between Russia and Belarus and said that “if there is a build-up of military resources on the border with Belarus, we have to react.” The European Union has accused Belarus’ authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko of encouraging illegal border crossings as a “hybrid attack” to retaliate against EU sanctions on his government for its crackdown on internal dissent after Lukashenko’s disputed 2020 reelection. Belarus denies the allegations but has said it will no longer stop refugees and migrants from trying to enter the EU. The Belarusian Defense Ministry accused Poland on Thursday of an “unprecedented” military buildup on the border, saying that migration control did not warrant the concentration of 15,000 troops backed by tanks, air defense assets and other weapons. “It looks more like forming a strike group of forces,” the ministry said, adding that the Polish military buildup prompted Belarus to respond with actions “both independently and within the existing agreements with our strategic ally,” a reference to Russia. Yes, those are nuclear-capable bombers, but we have no other choice,” the President, who has been in office since 1994, said. Col. Gen. Retired Leonid Ivashov, the former head of the Russian Defense Ministry’s foreign cooperation department, said the Russian bomber flights over Belarus were intended to demonstrate Moscow’s support for its ally amid soaring tensions. “Military drills and bomber flights are part of training for joint action,” Ivashov was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying. “It’s needed to avert a possible military conflict that could escalate into a big war. NITED NATIONS—Russia’s deputy UN ambassador said on Thursday that Moscow will never invade Ukraine unless it is first provoked by its neighbor or someone else, then cited what he called many threats from Ukraine and provocative actions by US warships in the Black Sea.

We warned our American colleagues that this is a real provocation,” he told reporters at UN headquarters. Blinken said the US did not know Russia’s intentions but said Moscow’s “playbook” has been in the past to invent provocations along its border to justify military intervention. “We don’t have clarity into Moscow’s intentions, but we do know its playbook,” he said. “If there are any provocations that we’re seeing, they’re coming from Russia,” and any Russian escalation along the border would be viewed with “grave concern.” Russia has cast its weight behind a separatist insurgency in
Ukraine’s east that erupted shortly after Moscow’s 2014 annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula and has caused more than 14,000 deaths. Russia has repeatedly denied any presence of its troops in eastern Ukraine. Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said last week that about 90,000 Russian troops are stationed not far from the border and in rebelcontrolled areas in Ukraine’s east. AIROBI, Kenya—American and British citizens have been swept up in Ethiopia’s mass detentions of ethnic Tigrayans under a new state of emergency in the country’s escalating war, The Associated Press has found. Thousands of Tigrayans in the capital, Addis Ababa, and across Africa’s second most populous country have already been detained and fears of more such detentions soared on Thursday as authorities ordered landlords to register tenants’ identities with police. Meanwhile, men armed with sticks were seen on some streets as volunteer groups sought out Tigrayans to report them. Ethiopia’s government says it is detaining people suspected of supporting the forces from the Tigray region who are approaching Addis Ababa following a yearlong war with Ethiopian forces that was triggered by a political falling-out. But human-rights groups, lawyers, relatives and the government-created Ethiopian Human Rights Commission say detentions—including of children and the elderly—appear to be on the basis of ethnicity.
The daughter of a British national, Meron Kiros, told the AP her 55-year-old father, Kiros Amdemariam Gebreab, had lived in the UK for more than a quartercentury and was visiting Ethiopia to work on his PhD studies when he was detained at his home in the capital on November 1. “My father has no political involvement in what has been happening,” she said and attributed his arrest to “purely for being a Tigrayan human being.” She said the family had not been allowed any communication with him, which she described as heartbreaking. The British government told the AP it has raised his case with Ethiopian authorities. Britain believes a very small number of UK nationals have been detained. At least two US citizens are among the Tigrayans detained as well. A hotelier and his son were detained at their home on November 2, the evening the state of emergency was imposed. Police officers accused them of supporting the Tigray forces, another of the hotelier’s children told the AP. The father, in his late 70s, was released after three days, but the son remains in custody. He has not been charged. “My brother moved back here because he wanted to invest in Ethiopia and after a life here after living in the US,” the relative said, speaking like many on condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation. A State Department spokesperson told the AP that the US is “concerned about reports of detentions of a number of US citizens in Ethiopia and is in active discussion with the government of Ethiopia about the matter.” But the overwhelming majority of Tigrayans detained have been local, some of them high-profile. On Monday morning, the CEO of Lion Bank was detained along with seven of his colleagues and a customer, a lawyer told the AP. They were held at a police station before being released in late evening, the lawyer said. An Ethiopian Orthodox Church official in Addis Ababa confirmed this week that dozens of priests, monks, deacons and others had been detained because of their ethnicity, including an assistant to the church’s patriarch. A civil servant for the Addis Ababa city administration said two friends were arrested while having lunch at a cafe on November 5 after plainclothes police officers overheard them speaking Tigrinya. He has not heard from them since. “So far, I have been lucky,” the civil servant said, but he worried it is “only a matter of time” before he is arrested, too. ANILA—The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will release the social pension of indigent senior citizens every three months, instead of the current bi-annual schedule, starting next year. This, following the adoption of Resolution 1047 of the House of Representatives’ Special Committee on Senior Citizens. Starting 2022, beneficiaries of the Social Pension for Indigent Senior Citizens will receive their P500 monthly stipend on a quarterly basis pursuant to DSWD Memorandum Circular 16. The DSWD said on Tuesday the payout will be facilitated by Special Disbursing Officers in coordination with local government units (LGUs). Social pension beneficiaries who are affected by the restrictions may send their authorized representatives to claim the stipend, the DSWD said in a statement. EARS ago, I chanced upon an advertisement that advises: “Don’t just stand there doing something. Sit. Be still.” It reminded me of a Simon and Garfunkel song called “Groovy” which had these lines: “Slow down, you’re moving too fast, you’ve got to make the moment last.” I have adopted them as my OM humming mantra to remind me always not to get carried away by the rushing flow of assignments. They help me ease on the gas pedal and pull up somewhere on the side road to reclaim the silence I need from the noise and haste and forward momentum of daily life. Many of us have normalized busyness to the chronic point of overload. I am now a supposedly retired senior citizen and yet here I am, still being swamped with creative work. I never imagined that I would be working with the son of a colleague who has taken over his late father’s shop and expanded
it to pursue production projects in digital media and entertainment. I find it amusing that this young “inheritor” seems to forget my age and keep involving me in his projects. Sometimes I attend meetings with his clients, who are all as young as my own son. Don’t get me wrong. I like to be useful and my ever-fertile mind has something yet to yield. After all, experts say that human individuals are most productive in the years between 60 and 80. There’s just one problem I have observed. So much time is squandered in interminable virtual meetings. Look, I welcome digital technology. Thanks to it, we did not feel totally marooned at home during the long lockdowns. We got to talk to one another, meet and plan and get work done without having to go out and risk getting infected. But since we all discovered the
useful benefits of having virtual meetings, it now seems that we can never get enough of it. When it’s not a zoom meeting, it’s chat group or a text conversation thread. My cell phone would light up with accompanying sound alerts deep into the night. Exasperated, my wife would often groan in half sleep: “Can’t you give it a rest?” While smart phones and laptops have made communication more convenient, I’m just afraid that it has so quickened the pace of today’s world to the extent of throwing our internal timer out of balance. Our internal timer plays tricks on us, making us think things are not moving fast enough. Thus, because it is convenient it only supercharges our human impatience to get things done faster. Virtual meetings and conversations give us that illusion of things are moving. So when I finally get away from the virtual meetings to buckle down to work, I would realize that I am left with no more space or room for slow absorption and reflection that are so necessary for creativity. Meanwhile, production team is breathing down my neck giving me the guilty feeling of being the cause of delay. I’m supposed to be a sprinter when it comes to creative work. writer, my workmates did not call me “in the nick of time” for nothing. But all that was sheer hackwork. Now in my mellow years, I shun quick half-hearted tasks. To me there must be joy in doing creative work or it’s not worth doing at all. Truth is, I experience a surge of exhilaration whenever I find some quiet, undisturbed moments to write or hatch ideas or just linger on a collection of compelling images. In my boyhood, my teacher kept on hammering this into our heads: don’t do tomorrow what you can do today. It’s true, we don’t like to wait. We get antsy when a job we’re paying for or the food we ordered is taking too long. Through the years, I have learned the wisdom of biding your time. I have noticed that slowcooked stews taste better. So many things benefit from giving it time. To members of this digitally powered generation the cliché “good things come to those who wait” is annoying to them. Creativity also needs space for the mind just like a seed needs space to grow. When seedlings grow too close together, they get stunted and are not as healthy as plants with enough space. Similarly, the mind needs a quiet space to absorb nutrients and access light, space in between for “decelera-

Most of the time, people I interact with are so carried away with details of how to do it, I get ignored about the basic questions of why, who, what. Everybody has an idea and pretty soon the project does not go anywhere and nobody knows what it’s all about. Ask yourself, is this really necessary? Is this what is needed, given the situation and the resources? This is what happened recently. During our virtual meetings in which I chose to stay mute, the client and the team were so completely engrossed and carried away with the how’s of the work and the tight deadline dangling over our heads. When I could finally sit down with the head of the said project and looked at the nitty gritty of it, we realized the cost was too high and the benefits were too meager. So why do it at all, I asked. He went back to client and thankfully the client saw the light and agreed to “park” it for the moment. And to our aghast, we found out later that a similar ready-made material was already available online. So much time and effort expended

Less talking and chattering in virtual space and more space to allow your heart to sing and dance as you let hundreds of ideas pop unrestrained in your head. David Kundtz in his book Moments in Between advises us: “See your quiet moments today as preparation of welcoming place for valuable thoughts that will just drop in.” Are you too preoccupied with the noise and clutter of virtual happenings at the moment? Stop. Sit. Be still. A good idea could be knocking and would like to drop in.

Yamanouchi-Mallari became the head of Nikkeijin Kokusai School in 2001, and joined the establ ishment of Mind anao Kokusai Daigaku in 2002, where she has been holding the top post since 2010. With her initiative, these schools have provided a wide range of curricula related to Japan, including its language. She has been exerting efforts to introduce Japanese culture, and promoting cultural linkages between two
countries. A third-generation Japanese descendant, YamanouchiMallari has also contributed to the improvement of the status of Nikkeijin and the bilateral exchanges between Japan and the Philippines through activities, such as supporting the development of young generation of Nikkei-jin community, and organizing annual memorial services for the remembrance of Japanese settlers in Davao.
In particular, she has greatly contributed to the investigation and interviews of Japanese descendants for the recognition of their nationality. The Embassy of Japan in the Philippines said its government extends its sincere congratulations to Yamanouchi-Mallari, and hopes she will continue to take an active role in further strengthening the close relations bet ween the two nations.

ISBON—Stephanie Marie Coo, assistant professor with the Department of History of the Ateneo de Manila University and currently a postdoctoral Marie Curie fellow at the Nova School of Law in Lisbon, Portugal and the University of Granada in Spain, was awarded the prestigious International Best Book Prize 2021 in HumanitiesEnglish Language Edition for her book: Clothing the Colony: 19thCentury Philippine Sartorial Culture, 1820-1896. Out of the total 497 books submitted, of which is 247 were from the humanities section and the only one from Asia to be shortlisted, Coo’s book was awarded under the International Convention of Asian Scholars—a biennial meeting platform of the International Institute for Asian Studies initiative, the consortium of universities hosted by the Leiden University in the Netherlands which
connects scholars, academic practitioners and institutions throughout the world. It discusses and exchanges knowledge and ideas about Asia and Asian Studies in a multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral context. A fellow Negrense, Ambassador to Portugal Celia Anna M. Feria expressed her pride and honor to have worked and partnered with Coo in promoting the rich and diverse culture of the Philippines in Portugal. In 2017 Coo delivered a lecture: “Philippine Women’s Clothing: Problematizing Class, Appearances and Colonialism” at Museu do Oriente in Lisbon. APÚA University graduate student Mark Kennedy Bantugon has invented a game changer for global aviation and the local agricultural sector. The “Pili Seal”—a two-component sealant made from the waste material of pili-tree resin, or spent or de-oiled resin—stole the show at the Philippine leg of the James Dyson Awards 2021, where Bantugon was hailed as national winner. If successful, it could create the country’s first aviation-sealant industry, and stimulate a sustainable manufacturing activity in the countryside. Composed of a base and a hardener, the sealant proved strong, reliable, impermeable and heat resistant—ideal for aircraft components that are constantly exposed to liquids and the elements.
Where it all began
THE process, however, was not easy pickings. It took the young inventor more than 18 months to develop the sealant. Bantugon was accidentally introduced to the potential sealant during a visit to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Headquarters. While a custodian was gathering the viscous spent pili resin for disposal, the student asked for samples. After doing some tests, Bantugon realized the spent resin performed better than the jackfruit and antipolo raw materials he used in high school for his earlier invention: a roofing sealant. It didn’t take long before he used the pili

de-oiled resin as the foundation in creating the Pili Seal. The fact that it came from a waste material further piqued his excitement. He hoped his win at the James Dyson Awards 2021 conveyed and sparked a paradigm shift on repurposing waste materials. “My goal was to introduce and exhibit a new perspective: that a specific waste material can be given a new function or role in our community, which is beneficial not only in the Philippines, but [also] globally,” said Bantugon. “Since the Pili Seal is made of a sustainable raw material, it is safe and healthy to use, compared with toxic and foul-smelling sealants in the market.” His invention is not only inexpensive to produce; it also has the potential to uplift the Philippine farming community, which he and his family are part of, once the demand for the seal and pili-spent resin kicks in.
Overcoming obstacles
BANTUGON’S efforts to produce his aircraft sealant weren’t always smooth sailing. Since he was doing a pioneer study, the lack of scientific research or related literature available meant longer days for him in the lab. Having the experimental sealant checked at industrial-testing facilities also proved to be challenging, as majority refused the samples for fear it might damage their equipment. Fortunately, Bantugon got the support of the DOST’s Advanced Device and Materials Testing Laboratory, or ADMATEL, Forest Products Research and Development Institute, the Energy Research and Testing Laboratory Services of the Department of Energy, and other private testing companies. in Materials Science and Engineering by Research program. The university’s reputation of being a leader in engineering and sciences makes it the ideal environment for those like him who believe in the importance and essence of research. “Mapúa trains their studentresearchers. They have a lot of students who excel in research and education,” he said. “The quality of education Mapúa provides helps students like me to step out of our comfort zones and pursue our passions.” While waiting for the results of the final and international leg of the James Dyson Award, where his Pili Seal will compete with 84 other inventions worldwide, Bantugon is collaborating with local organizations to help him patent and commercialize his invention. “My goal is to use this...as a gateway to create our own manufacturing of aviation sealant [here] in the country,” he added. “I want to give back to the local farming community, particularly in agriculture. I want to give...farmers a new income opportunity.” Bantugon is the second Mapúan whose invention received recognition from the award-giving body. Electrical engineering student Car vey Ehren R. Maigue was named the first-ever Sustainability Winner of the international tilt for the Aurora Renewable Energy and UV Sequestration, or AuREUS, which bested 1,800 other entries from design engineers across 28 countries.
TCS to bring goIT education program to Western Visayas

LEADING global information-technology, consulting and business-solutions organization, TATA Consultancy Services (TCS) expanded its “goIT ” program with another leg of activities in the Western Visayas Region which began in September. The pandemic did not hamper TCS’ efforts to equip Filipino students—considered d ig ita l innovators of tomorrow—with knowledge, skills and experience in digital innovation. This year’s goIT aims to provide learning materials and conduct mentorship sessions with students across the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo and Negros Occidental, as well as the highly urbanized cities of Bacolod and Iloilo. The program is TCS’ global community engagement project that instills in students relevant 21st-century skills and knowledge to help them develop innovative solutions beneficial to the local community. It also teaches students ways to build prototype solutions in design thinking, digital technologies and agile
methodologies. The program started upskilling Filipino students from the Cordillera Region in 2020, and was able to engage almost 300 students. TCS employee-volunteers facilitate goIT activities and mentor students, providing them with industry context and greater insights into real-world scenarios. Each volunteer completes an extensive training on youth psychology, education systems, design thinking and tools for mobile-app development to boost their individual capabilities, as they are being prepared to teach students. ne of the exciting and enticing reasons to be in Central Visayas is the proximity of the idyllic islands where you can hop from one province to the next. The good news is Cebu province recently dispensed with the costly Covid-19 tests to lure visitors as part of its tourism reboot. With the charming countryside beckoning the lockdown-weary travelers, road trips, church-hopping, beach bumming, and island hopping around the region are back. Down south in Aloguinsan, tourists are being wooed again to experience its award-winning ecocultural Bojo River cruise, which was named as among the Top 100 Sustainable Destinations in the World, and Best Communitybased Tourism at the Asean Tourism Awards. Guests are given a grand welcome with a bevy of Visayan folk songs by the local organization, which also prepared the sumptuous native lunch. The 1.4-km cruise is a nirvanic slow paddle on a small banca across the narrow river flanked by lush mangrove forests, with the boatmen themselves as tour guides. FTER HYBE, which manages K-pop powerhouse BTS, Korean SM Entertainment is also entering the NFT (non-fungible token) business by establishing its own NFT division. Earlier, HYBE Labels partnered with blockchain exchange platform Dunamu to establish a joint corporation focussed on NFTs. What are NFTs and why do big Korean agencies want a piece of the action? These are virtual assets stored on the blockchain that authenticate the ownership of objects such as photos, artwork, music and in-game items. The digital photo cards are similar to the physical ones, which K-pop fans collect with a passion. But the difference could be that the digital photo cards would provide a more interactive experience with audio and video. What would this mean for fans? I’m not exactly sure but collectors would definitely need to shed more money for NFTs than they do now for photo cards. It would be more eco-friendly because the buying and selling of physical photo cards right now uses so much paper and plastic in the packaging, but most fans still prefer something to literally hold on to. Things could still change, of course, and that’s what is wonderful about technology. What hasn’t changed is the Starbucks Traditions Promotions, which lets customers collect stickers to get planners and other Starbucks merchandise. Also new on the digital front: Finally, the Philippines has Reels and Music on Instagram. Reels give Instagram users new the ability to create and edit up to 60-second short-form videos. Users can
access the Reels feature on their Instagram camera. They can either film videos directly on Reels or use a saved video from the camera roll. You can choose to speed up or slow down part of the video or audio you selected. You can also set the timer to record any of your clips hands-free and add stickers and text to your videos. Also, Philippines finally has Instagram Music. This means you can add a soundtrack to your story. When you tap to add a sticker to a photo or video in Stories, you’ll now see a music icon. You can also choose a song before capturing a video. To do this, swipe to the new “Music” option under the record button when you open the camera. Search for a song, select the exact part you want and record a video as the song plays in the background. Instagram has also expanded the ability to add links in Stories to all accounts. Now everyone can finally add links to their Instagram Stories, something very useful to someone like me who likes to share links to articles. ■

From cryptocurrency to cash: Ways to bank your digital coin BY CHANELLE BESSETTE NerdWallet CRYPTOCURRENCY, the blockchain-based digital currency that has captured the interest of investors and financial service firms alike, has a challenging problem. It can be hard to actually spend this currency like you would regular money. But there are new services on the horizon that could help people use bitcoin and other digital coins in more mainstream ways for their day-to-day finances. Here’s a look at how to use these banking-style services for cryptocurrency, as well as their benefits and barriers. ■ WHAT IS CRYPTOCURRENCY BANKING? The term cryptocurrency banking could be considered a misnomer, since the exchange companies and firms that offer these services aren’t technically banks, but it generally refers to the ways in which consumers can manage their cryptocurrency balances. At this stage, this kind of banking mostly just allows people to hold their funds in a digital wallet or spend it like they would spend traditional money. ■ BENEFITS OF CRYPTOCURRENCY BANKING. At this time, the main benefit of this kind of banking is cryptocurrency debit cards. They allow you to use your
digital coin balance like any other currency to make everyday purchases or withdraw it as cash instead of keeping it as an investment. Before these debit cards were available, you could spend your cryptocurrency only at retailers that chose to accept it directly or sell it in exchange for dollars. Now, financial technology firms are partnering with chartered banks and/or debit card issuers to offer these cards, using their partner’s logistical and regulatory framework to automatically sell your cryptocurrency behind the scenes, converting it into dollars and allowing retailers to accept it. Many banks rely on the stable value of currency in order to lend, borrow or earn interest on money, but it’s not possible, at this time, to do those things with cryptocurrency in a way
that’s as stable or safe as with traditional currency. And to spend your digital coin, you have to accept the risk that its value could go up after you spend it, since your transactions are based on the real-world value of your coin as it exists at that moment. For example, if the value of your cryptocurrency doubled after you bought a $5 sandwich, that means it effectively cost you $10. But the value could also go down, making previous purchases a good deal. Another barrier to consider is that regulators are still evaluating cryptocurrency fintechs. The US Securities and Exchange Commission recently announced that it was going to potentially sue Coinbase, one of the most well-known exchange firms, for offering a new lending product, and Coinbase has since canceled the product launch. Consumers should also know that using a cryptocurrency debit card is considered a taxable event by the Internal Revenue Service, since the cardholder is technically selling cryptocurrency as they make transactions with their debit card. Some card issuers may automatically generate 1099 forms for their customers to use when filing taxes, but the consumer is still responsible for keeping track of their tax liability. ■ HOW TO TRY CRYPTOCURRENCY BANKING. To
start using these kinds of banking services, you must first purchase cryptocurrency, such as bitcoin, litecoin, ether or any other currency that you would like to invest in. Cash App, Coinbase and PayPal are just a few companies with apps that have made it easier to purchase and sell cryptocurrency, even in small amounts, and store it in a digital wallet. If you want to spend your balance easily, you’ll need to open an account with a firm that offers cryptocurrency debit cards and uses the kind of digital currency you own. Coinbase, for one, has a special debit card that lets customers spend any Coinbase assets they own and earn cryptocurrency rewards, but there’s currently a waitlist for new customers. BitPay, another firm, offers a prepaid Mastercard debit card that customers can use to spend their digital currency. There are others, but it’s not a widespread bank offering. In the future, cryptocurrency could have the potential to be a source of peer-to-peer loans, where individuals can quickly and securely process loans to each other , according to research from CB Insights. It’s a huge area of untapped potential but for right now, the world of cryptocurrency banking is limited to a small pool of players with some very new products and services.

Thousands of red UK phone boxes to be protected from closure LONDON—Thousands of Britain’s iconic red phone boxes will be protected from removal under new rules, the UK’s telecommunications regulator said Tuesday. The public payphone boxes may look like obsolete relics in an age of ubiquitous smartphones, but regulator Ofcom said they can still be a “lifeline” for people in need. The regulator is proposing rules to prevent 5,000 call boxes in areas with poor mobile coverage from being closed down. It said that phone booths in areas considered accident or suicide hotspots, and those that have had more than 52 calls made from them in the past 12 months, would also meet the criteria. Ofcom said there are still around 21,000 phone boxes across the country, and that almost 150,000 calls to emergency services were made from phone boxes from May 2019 to May 2020. Some 45,000 calls were also made to
other helplines like the Samaritans. “Some of the call boxes we plan to protect are used to make relatively low numbers of calls. But if one of those calls is from a distressed child, an accident victim or someone contemplating suicide, that public phone line can be a lifeline at a time of great need,” said Selina Chadha, Ofcom’s director of connectivity. “We also want to make sure that people without mobile coverage, often in rural areas, can still make calls,” she added. BT Group, formerly British Telecom, says nearly half of the phone boxes in the UK have been removed due to the growth of the mobile phone industry. It said more than 6,500 unused call boxes have so far been converted into mini community libraries, art galleries or storage units for public defibrillators under a plan called “Adopt a Kiosk,” which allows local organizations to buy a red phone box for £1 ($1.40) and turn it into something useful. ASIG City Mayor Vico Sotto approved on Friday the Philippine Basketball Association’s (PBA) request to hold its inaugural 3X3 tournament at the Ynares Sports Arena. “The 3X3 will push through next Saturday [November 20] at the Ynares Sports Arena,” PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial told BusinessMirror on Friday. Thirteen teams are entered in the tournament, according to Marcial. They are San Miguel Beer, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, TNT Tropang Giga, Northport, Meralco, Limitless Appmasters (Phoenix), CAVITEX Road Warriors (NLEX), Purefoods (Magnolia), Terrafirma and Sistah Super Sealers (Rain or Shine). Only Alaska and Blackwater are not on the list but in their place are Pioneer Pro Tibay, Platinum Karaoke and Zamboanga Valientes of MLV Group. The draw is on Saturday. The teams will compete in a sixleg, three-conference calendar with three grand finals. The leg winners will bag P100,000 and the grand finals champion will get P750,000. SIAN champion Vanessa Sarno is feeling the pressure now that she’s left to carry the load in the absence of Olympics gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz at the International Weightlifting Federation World Championships in Tashkent next month. “The expectations are higher now after I won the Asian championships gold medal,” Sarno told BusinessMirror over the phone from her training gym in her native Poblacion Dauis in Bohol. “It pressures me a bit as the tournament [worlds] gets closer.” The world championships, set December 7 to 17, will be without
Diaz, who decided to forego her bid for the only gold medal missing from her collection because of her lack of training and preparation. Diaz was preoccupied with commercial endorsements, TV and guest appearances and was hardly at the gym since she won the Olympic mint last July 26 up to her departure for Malacca, Malaysia, over a week ago. “I’ll be competing at the world level now,” Sarno, only 18, said. “How about if I don’t make it?
