Google provides interactive exercises designed to bring insights from the Google News Initiative Reader Revenue Playbook to life using each news organization’s data. The User Funnel Diagnostic helps new organizations compare their performance across the user funnel against industry benchmarks and identify tactics they can use to improve.

Things have indeed changed since then. The typewriters I used to write my stories on are now museum pieces and who even uses a fax machine? News organizations are heavily reliant on the Internet for research and communications. I won’t be the person who says everything is so easy for journalists these days. It’s not easy. There are several advantages of facial recognition technology for society. Accuracy is increasingly high with Google FaceNet being 99.63 percent accurate when matching 13,000 pictures of faces from across the web. The DeepFace software from Facebook, which has a 97.252 accuracy rate for recognizing human faces, is used for security and crime prevention purposes.

In line with Globe’s commitment for innovation, the Rappit brand is a testament to the positive impact of technology in addressing everyday needs.

Aging and its effects on facial recognition

ONLINE grocery store Purego, a collaboration between the Puregold Group and Globe’s 917Ventures, is now Rappit (www.rappit.ph), the Filipinos’ new grocery shopping sidekick that promises more efficient deliveries and a better shopping experience.

“We are thrilled to introduce Rappit to online grocery shoppers. The app takes all the things users loved about PureGo, with the addition of even better

“As we go beyond the telco business and become a digital solutions platform that aims to address the challenges of the Filipino people, we are so excited to see how vast Rappit can contribute to this vision,” Cu said. Puregold president Vincent Co, meanwhile, said Rappit’s mission is aligned with Puregold’s goal of providing Filipinos greater access to quality products for their daily needs.

The process of recognizing a face takes only a second, which has benefits for the companies that use facial recognition. In an era of cyber-attacks and advanced hacking tools, companies need both secure and fast technologies. Facial recognition enables quick and efficient verification of a person’s identity.

customer service, access to reasonably priced product favorites, and exciting rewards every time you shop with us. We want to not only continue giving users a better shopping experience, but also change things up to keep online grocery shopping fresh and enjoyable!” said Rappit CEO Cindy Toh.

THE RISKS OF FACIAL RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGY

The technology is now commonly used for a variety of purposes, from law enforcement, airports and border control, finding missing persons, reducing/solving crimes, biometric online banking, health care and workforce attendance, to improving marketing/sales experiences.

Face recognition information could fall into the wrong hands as a result of data breaches. Although systems are improving in their ability to prevent identity theft, it is still possible. Furthermore, companies may utilize the information you provide them for research purposes. As a result, they stand to profit from it without your permission.

Marcel Grimmer and his colleagues at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology designed a test to assess it and shared the results in a paper, titled “Time Flies By: Analyzing the Impact of Face Ageing on the Recognition Performance with Synthetic Data.” It revealed that we can age in as little as five years before face-recognition algorithms begin to struggle to identify us as the same person. This means systems that rely on facial recognition may need to get new images of users periodically or risk being unable to verify who they are.

It pointed out that people can age differently depending on a range of lifestyle factors, and that we also age more or less quickly at different points of our lives thus determining how often face recognition needs to update photos of users across the board to

algorithms can struggle to recognize us as the same person after as little as five years according to a recent study.

AS facial recognition technology advances, cyber thieves seek to exploit it. In 2019, hackers were able to crack Apple’s iPhone FaceID user authentication in approximately 120 seconds. Thus, despite the numerous advantages of facial recognition technology, it is critical to weigh the dangers and drawbacks in order to keep your personal information secure.FRT can also violate individual and societal privacy. Because facial recognition algorithms may store significant amounts of data, it is critical that they have the greatest levels of security available. It is also critical that vendors who engage with these companies have adequate security procedures in place to eliminate any backdoor cybersecurity risks.

Babies will change within two months, so you could probably capture a new photo every month and it would still fail. Generally, even until the age of 20 years, the face still kind of changes. Then you have a period from say 20 to 60 years where the identity is kind of stable and there will only be some texture changes, like wrinkles. And then the other extreme would be the seniors, where it again gets a bit problematic because the head shape changes again, and you have more pronounced wrinkles.

The team used open-source alternatives to the face-recognition tools used by police forces and smartphone makers, and also used AI-generated images of 50,000 humans aged synthetically to various degrees, due to the scarcity of real data sets collected over long time frames.

Furthermore, firms may share or even sell this data to third parties, allowing them to recognize and follow you. Companies developing face recognition apps should consider data privacy risks. One method is to create detailed privacy policies, obtain customer consent, and provide them with the option to opt-out of theAgingprogram.matters in facial recognition. Your friends and family might not be willing to point out that you’re looking older, but facial recognition systems won’t hesitate to tell you otherwise. Face-recognition

With facial recognition systems capable of up to 99.97 percent accuracy, the potential for this technology is enormous. Although facial recognition technology has numerous advantages, it is crucial to be aware of its drawbacks in order to protect your personal information.

S the iPhone 14 launches this week, we take a look back at one of the innovations Apple introduced when it launched the iPhone X—Face ID. The facial recognition system that retired the beloved home button became the main biometric authentication for unlocking your device, making payments, accessing sensitive data, and providing detailed facial expression tracking for Animojis. Apple claimed the probability of someone else unlocking a phone with Face ID is 1 in 1,000,000 as opposed to Touch ID at 1 in 50,000. There were initial apprehensions but as expected, Android phones eventually followed suit, and now even cheaper devices flaunt Face recognition as a key feature.According to the web site Kaspersky.com, facial recognition is a way of identifying or confirming an individual’s identity using their face and can be used to identify people in photos, videos, or in real-time. It is one category of biometric security that also includes voice recognition, fingerprint recognition, and eye retina or iris recognition.

name becomes a part of Facebook’s database, which may also be used for facial recognition. If your faceprint matches an image in a facial recognition database, then a determination is made. Face recognition also makes it easy to identify and find different people on Google Photos.

Zain Malik at Ping Identity comments, “Facial recognition systems play an increasingly important role as effective biometric security. Although facial recognition technology is rapidly evolving and finding a number of applications in various market sectors, it is still not flawless. Face recognition technology is constantly being improved, which means that the percentage of errors will become lower and lower.” ■

The experiment also revealed that the aging algorithms used to create older faces from reference images were more effective when the target was aged between 20 and 40 years and didn’t do as well with children and older people.

Online grocery store promises more rewards for shopping, more efficient deliveries

Additionally, to make face matches, the technology relies on algorithms. Because the databases contain more data on white males, the algorithms are more robust for white men than for women and people of color. As a result, the algorithms develop inadvertent biases.

maintain security, and accuracy is hard.

More than interacting with our phones, the technology is now mostly used for security and law enforcement, though there is increasing interest in other areas of use because images can be taken without touching or interacting with the individual being identified, and those images are recorded and instantly checked against existing databases. It is also considered the most natural since we typically recognize ourselves and others by looking at faces, rather than thumbprints and irises.

Facial recognition technology (FRT) systems begin with face detection where the camera detects and locates the image of a face, either alone or in a crowd. Face analysis comes next as an image of the face is captured and analyzed. The software reads the geometry of your face focusing on key factors such as the distance between your eyes, the depth of your eye sockets, the distance from forehead to chin, the shape of your cheekbones, and the contour of the lips, ears, and chin to identify the facial landmarks that make your face unique. This is then converted to data and your face’s analysis is essentially turned into a mathematical formula creating what is called a faceprint. Just like thumbprints are unique, each person has their own faceprint. Your faceprint is then compared against a database of other known faces.

Rappit, a play on words combining “wrap it” and rapid, is hopping into Filipino households with a more fun and exciting shopping experience plus greater rewards for their shopping. With its rebrand, Rappit is embracing a bigger sense of purpose: to continue offering premium quality groceries at affordable prices, provide stellar user experience customization, and reward app users with exclusive perks and freebies. This is how Rappit aims to take delivery service to a whole new level.

On Facebook, any photo tagged with a person’s

The study said the accuracy of face-recognition systems dropped continuously over time from the point the reference image was taken. Within five years, AI algorithms usually identified people, but after that, they began to struggle. Gaps beyond 20 years proved very difficult for software to handle.

Facial recognition works by matching the faces of people walking past special cameras, to images of people on a watch list. The watch lists can contain pictures of anyone, including people who are not suspected of any wrongdoing, and the images can come from anywhere—even from our social-media accounts.

Globe president and CEO Ernest Cu, meanwhile, shared his excitement over the arrival of Rappit, seeing it as a game-changer in the online delivery space. “Rappit stands out as a fresh, exciting and dynamic delivery brand that wants to give not just an excellent online shopping and delivery experience to its customers, but also reward them for using the service. This reflects the #AlagangGlobe brand of caring for people as we go about our business,” Cu said. Finally, by facilitating training in areas such as data, cloud and cybersecurity work, the approach will allow IPEF countries to promote cross-bor der data flows and online privacy, as well as combat disinformation, cor ruption and cyber-theft, according to the Biden administration.

The IPEF Upskilling Initiative, which will provide 7 million training opportunities in total over the next decade, was unveiled Thursday by Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and US Trade Representative (USTR) Katherine Tai as they host a two-day meeting of the Asian nations in Los Angeles. The plan is designed to pro mote sustainable and inclusive eco nomic growth, while advancing com petitiveness in the region, they said.

RANKFURT, Germany—The European Central Bank (ECB) made its largest-ever interest rate increase Thursday, following the US Federal Reserve and other central banks in a global stampede of rapid rate hikes meant to snuff out the inflation that is squeezing consumers and push ing Europe toward recession.

Rate hikes often support a curren cy’s exchange rate—but the euro has been under pressure because of more general fears about recession and eco nomic growth. It has recently fallen under $1, the lowest level in 20 years. The euro slid about a half-cent after the ECB decision, to around 99.5 US cents.

Lagarde said a 2022-23 recession would occur only under a “really dark” worst-case scenario where all Russian natural gas is cut off, alternative sup plies are not available and governments have to resort to energy rationing.

The ECB’s benchmark is now 1.25 percent for lending to banks. The Fed’s main benchmark is 2.25 percent to 2.5 percent after several large rate hikes, including two of three-quarters of a point. The Bank of England’s key benchmark is 1.75 percent, and the Bank of Canada raised rates Wednes day by three-quarters of a point, to 3.25 percent. AP

The bank’s governing council raised its key benchmarks by an unprecedented three-quarters of a percentage point for the 19 countries that use the euro cur rency. The ECB usually moves rates by a quarter-point and had not raised its key bank lending rate by three-quarters of a point since the euro’s launch in 1999.

The sudden campaign to raise in terest rates follows years in which borrowing costs and inflation stayed low because of broad trends such as globalization, aging populations and digitalization.Lagarderejected comparisons, say ing that “we’re not trying to mimic any other central bank” and pointing out that the ECB started tightening monetary policy in December, when it decided to phase out its pandemic stimulus through bond purchases.

Some economists say the ECB’s in terest rate hikes, including a half-point hike at its last meeting in July, could deepen a European recession predicted for the end of this year and the begin ning of 2023, caused by higher inflation that has made everything from gro ceries to utility bills more expensive.
