eath Consultants Incorporated is an international manufacturer and consulting firm based in Houston, Texas, which provides a variety of products and services for the utility protection and natural gas detection markets. Heath Consultants is a third generation family-owned business that was founded in 1933 by Milton Heath Sr., who started operations as a tree clearing company for electric utilities. Heath was approached by the city of Salem, Mass, which had its own gas distribution system, to do an investigation early on to see

whether natural gas was killing trees. That consulting business then spread into other parts of the state and began the company’s focus on leak detection for the natural gas industry. “He developed a vegetation survey to detect gas leaks, which caught on with gas companies, and he offered it as a service across the country,” said Paul D. Wehnert, senior vice president of sales and marketing. “Crews would drive around during spring and summer looking for vegetation signs. That’s how it all started.” Since then, Heath has expanded to more than 1,000 employees and $100 million in annual revenue while developing its products and services with the goal of becoming the world leader in utility pipeline integrity and damage prevention. From portable gas detectors and confined space monitors to pipe and cable locators, the company provides the utility industry with the most innovative and cutting-edge products and instruments. Their extensive experience with gas leak investigation and inspections, underground utility damage prevention, water accountability, and rigorous training programs has helped make Heath Consultants a success in providing
quality utility services. “There’s a strong reputation in the industry with the Heath name - it’s well known and respected,” Wehnert said. The business is third generation family run and owned by Carolyn Heath Haag, who is president and chairman of the board. Heath is certified in California as a woman owned business and is in the process of receiving its national certification for being a woman owned company. “That opens up some new markets for us,” Wehnert said. “It has helped us gain some business
on the West Coast. before, like busy intersections, or behind fences. “The remote methane leak detector was a fundamental change in how leak surveying was conducted,” Rutherford said. “We have been continuously evolving the technologies and today we are leading the industry in the development in infrared gas detection instruments.” Services and products Heath’s main business is its Services Business Unit where they hire field people, train field people to use the equipment that the company manufactures, and provide services in the field such as gas detection, underground utility
locating, odorant analysis, and various services that revolve around the gas industry. In addition, the company has a Products Business Unit, which is the manufacturing side. The majority of those products are manufactured in Houston. Primarily, Heath develops and commercializes gas leak detection equipment. Future plans Earlier this year Heath broke ground on a 20,000 square foot facility for manufacturing and should be ready to move into that building in April.
