I
NTREN Inc. is one of the most successful construction and service providers in the Midwest today, employing over 800 men and women in seven states, though you may not have predicted its success at its origins 25 years ago. CEO and Founder Loretta Rosenmayer began INTREN (then Trench-It) with just four employees, limited electrical industry experience and a passion to succeed. Rosenmayer and her employees’ steadfast focus on their core values, safety, integrity, customer focus and employee empowerment, combined with great timing in the utility industry springboarded INTREN into a place of respect and security in the industry. Origins When Rosenmayer started the company, she didn’t have much.
Safety is a core value at INTREN. While maintaining pedestrian and vehicle safety, INTREN completes civil and electrical work on a manhole reconstruction project in the heart of a major metropolitan city.

But what she did have was her reputation and the respect of the community. She also had a business idea. A close woman friend offered her a $15,000 loan to help launch her business and another financed a truck. The Company began with small trenching projects for farmers. And while INTREN enjoyed a moderate success in trenching, a housing boom in Chicago’s western suburbs provided a once in a lifetime opportunity for the Company. “Something miraculous happened,” Rosenmayer recalls. “Houses were going up so quickly that ComEd [Commonwealth Edison, a subsidiary of Exelon and the largest utility in Illinois] and local utilities couldn’t keep up with connection and service needs. For the very first time in their history, they decided to bring in contractors to help with the overload. They looked to local contractors, as they believed it would be a temporary situation. “ “I could say the rest is history because I’ve been working consistently with ComEd ever since.” Rosenmayer calls INTREN the “company that ComEd built” in homage to the long-term partnerships, which she says has challenged her and helped grow

Rosenmayer. Rosenmayer and INTREN are huge proponents of charities and organizations that improve the quality of life for those in need. They have worked with many charities, including El Valor, a Chicago-based charity that helps underserved people in the urban community. The Company also supports the National Latino Educational Institute in Chicago, which strives to enhance the lives of Latinos, and CASA of McHenry County, (Court Appointed Special Advocates) which helps abused and neglected children have representation in court, protecting their rights and best interests. Rosenmayer herself has received several awards from charities in appreciation for INTREN’s support. She says this life of stewardship, which she passes on to employees at INTREN, is not a choice, but something we are called to do. In 2009, Rosenmayer moved into the role of CEO and her son, Lance Rosenmayer, became president.
