Time for a Family Meeting to Discuss Financial Preparations?

Trusted Investing Advice from these local financial advisors

During the holidays, you may find it valuable to have a family meeting to discuss financial preparations that affect you and your loved ones. Consider a scenario that would work under two different circumstances: a meeting with your own grown children or a meeting with your elderly parents. In either case, you’ll want to review the following areas: • Investment information. Let your grown children know where you keep your investments and what sort of investments and retirement accounts you own. You should also provide your children with the name of your financial advisor. And talk to your parents about their investments. You might think that this could be a challenging topic to bring up, but you might be surprised at their willingness to talk. • Estate planning documents. This can involve a variety of legal documents, such as a will, a living trust, power of attorney, etc. If you’ve already created these documents, share their location and their intent with your grown children, who will be active in carrying out your estate plans. The same is true with your elderly parents — encourage them to share all their estate-planning documents with you, especially if they will be counting on you for their care. • Names of professional advisors. As you put together your estate plans, you will likely need to work with a team of financial, tax and legal advisors. Make sure your grown children know their names and how to contact them. Similarly, seek the same information from your parents. • Future living arrangements. It’s possible that you will be able to live independently your whole life but you may eventually need some type of long-term care. Let your children know what your feelings are about such a possibility and what preparations you have made. Try to elicit the same information from your own parents. • Funeral or burial instructions. If you make your own burial or cremation plans in advance, and possibly even prepay for them, you’ll be taking a tremendous burden off the shoulders of your loved ones. You’ll also want to learn about your parents’ desires for their final arrangements, and what steps they may have already taken.

hen I came to Lincoln University, my goal was to work and complete my graduate degree. While I did do that, I gained so much more than my education. From the campus and out into the city, I was amazed at just the level of community, which is why I began to get involved. Nineteen years later, I am still part of the Blue Tiger family and am very active in Jefferson City government and civic organizations, with my goal to affect change for our city and my university.

The new year seems to bring us back to the same place: ”What is my New Year’s resolution?” Ugh! Well for many, it involves setting new goals to lose weight. Several years ago I realized it wasn’t so much about the number as it was about being healthy from the inside out. My motto is move every day, eat a clean diet, be consistent and patient and you will not only see results, but you will receive lifelong results. For me it was a lifestyle change, not a diet. This issue has wonderful information that will motivate you to make changes toward becoming a healthier person. Starting on page 62, three women share their journeys of how they reclaimed their lives through three different professional weight loss programs offered locally. Their before and after photos and their stories might be the inspiration you need to get going. Besides health, other popular resolutions include financial, spiritual and professional; however, what about a New Year’s Resolution for a stronger and healthier community? On page 59, Mayor Carrie Tergin discusses the health of our community and encourages us to set personal goals to help make Jefferson City a better place. As citizens, I believe we should take up Mayor Tergin’s challenge. Personally, I am going to take time to evaluate the opportunities that we have in Jefferson City and target goals where I might help the most. Much can be accomplished through the efforts of a few motivated individuals. For example, last year The Boys and Girls Club, pg 86, set goals to raise enough money to build a desperately needed new club. In no time, the goals were not only met but were exceeded because a group of caring individuals stepped forward to make it happen. I encourage you to find out what is needed in Jefferson City this year, and decide how you can help achieve some lofty goals. For example, Special Olympics is kicking off a campaign for new facilities and Helias Foundation has kicked off a capital campaign to better the facilities at their school. Of course, the Missouri State Prison and Adrian’s Island are always options to consider, and there are many more. Let’s set our goals to become a united community, one that can bring goals to fruition. We can and will work together because Jefferson City is the best town around.

EDITOR'S NOTE INSIDE LOOK

T

Keep Moving

This issue on fitness has me inspired for a lot of reasons. First, trying to keep up with Ed Gross during a photography session at the YMCA West put a whole new perspective on aging. Ed is 95 and his wife, Margaret Ann, is 86. They just recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary, and they are regulars with their cardio and weight lifting routines at the Y. They still go out dancing together several evenings out of the week, and you should see their footwork on the dance floor. Did I mention that Ed still drives? When I called to interview, he offered to meet me that night around 8 p.m. He said sometimes talking over the phone is difficult because “the hearing isn’t so great anymore.” I questioned if he was driving himself, and he responded, “Well yes!” What a zest for life and such a sense of humor. His nickname is Babe, and as a dance instructor for more than 40 years has a way of not taking himself or others too seriously. It’s all in good fun with Babe, but he will give it to you straight. So, stand up and dance. Ed certainly is one to inspire us to break through preconceived limits we might place on ourselves. Another meaningful encounter was standing on the Missouri Bridge with Keith Borgmeyer, photographer and art director, to capture our cover image. Sarah Harbour, our cover girl, exercise specialist and group fitness coordinator for Healthplex, ran up and back too many times to count so that Keith could capture just the right image. Later as we walked down by the river’s edge for yet another group of shots, Sarah told me she teaches five exercise classes a day. At one point she trained for a full marathon, so it was five hours of workouts and then two hours of running. Even Sarah admitted it was a difficult level to maintain, but she put her heart into it and completed her marathon. Sarah is as upbeat and encouraging as anyone you will meet. It’s easy to see why her students adore her. You cannot help but be inspired by the weight loss stories. These three women were determined to change their lives, and that they did it. They lost 130, 80 and 104 pounds. I am honored that they shared their magnificent stories. A change of lifestyle has forever changed their outlook on life. Salute to each of them! As the new year begins, I encourage you to start anew. Set some goals and think about how you would like your life to be this year. Also, drop me an email to let me know your thoughts and suggestions for the magazine. Your feedback helps with our goals on the quest to make our magazine better each issue. As always, I enjoy hearing from you and we appreciate your loyal readership.

Every Move Matters RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR! Ringing in the New Year should bring with it the optimism of being part of a better future. Whether you are planning for a better future with your health or with your finances we recommend addressing these three questions. FIRST, WHERE AM I NOW? Without a true understanding of your current position you will most likely not move in the most effective direction toward your better future. I’ll use the example of travel. Think about being in a large city with a limited amount of time to enjoy the sites and the people. Without knowing exactly where you are located you are unable to create a plan to get to where you want to go and you lose precious time and possibly enjoyment of your potential future. Take a thorough assessment of where you are today and record it so you move in the most effective direction toward your better future. SECOND, WHERE DO YOU WANT TO BE? Kenny Nicklas President of Nicklas Financial Answering this question may require more time and thought. A quick, off the cuff answer such as, “Not where I am today,” will potentially cause pursuit of an unknown destination, leaving you no closer to your better future than you are today and worse, you may be further away.

AND FINALLY, WHAT’S STOPPING YOU FROM GETTING THERE? We all have infinite lists of why nots, a few are valid but many are just excuses. Make a list of all the roadblocks and obstacles that are potentially slowing you down or stopping you completely. Are there ways around the obstacles or detours that you can take to get you to your destination? Or do you need help from others to remove the roadblocks? Just like a GPS unit warns you about road construction or traffic jams ahead of time, it is critical to identify what’s in your way so you can determine an alternate route or perhaps a solution to overcome the obstacle. Answering these questions helps you chart the route to your better future. Then you can begin to enjoy the journey, celebrating each new attraction (achievement) and relationship made along the way. We, at Nicklas Financial, welcome the opportunity to join you in pursuit of your better financial future. Always remember, EVERY MOVE MATTERS!

arm metallics are hot this year. You will find them in cakes and invitations, makeup and even hair color. Think glitzy gold linens, copper lantern centerpieces and rose gold wedding rings. Speaking of rose gold, it is found in hair color and makeup trends as well. For hair, it’s ginger-based color accented with golden highlights and warm rosy red tones. Look for soft textures such as curls, braids, straight locks and messy buns within a single, unstructured style. Think windswept and romantic, perfectly imperfect. Wreaths or halos of fresh flowers such as jasmine and other seasonal blooms are woven in with fig, bay and eucalyptus leaves to create an ethereal look. In many cases, flowers are placed throughout the hairstyle. The skin is bright, glowing and ethereal. It’s a fresh, effortless and polished look. Sheer corals and rose colors on the lips and cheeks create a warm, healthy glow. A dot of sheer color on the lips creates interest without weight. The eyes are soft and warm with golds, peaches and warm browns for highlighting and contouring. Black eye liner is applied but in a softer, dreamier look instead of the traditional smoky-eye, heavy black liner combo of the past. Ever popular artificial lashes remain for a touch of drama and to enhance length and fullness.

AC H IEVING THE LOOK

Wedding Fashion for Spring BY KIM MARSHALL

Marshall & Company is located at 2421 W. Edgewood, Suite G.

Abbey Verslues’ hair style was created by Kelsey Scheuler, master stylist at Marshall & Company. Verslues’ look is a mix of edgy and elegance with a mowhawklike shape up the center as a focal point. Her thick hair is directed back, which cascades in a series of slip braids with double-strand twists. Alternating strands in the back were manipulated for a piecy, textured, unstructured look. Verslues’ makeup was created by Aisha Stapleton, esthetician and makeup artist of Marshall & Company. Skin was prepped with Aveda toning mist and intense moisturizer. Aveda’s mineraltinted moisturizer with SPF 15 is Verslues’ foundation. Makeup was first contoured and then layered with Aveda’s lemon spice, copper haze, opal and Mirabella’s steel for a soft smoky look on the eyes. Aveda’s bronze glow and plum are used for cheek color. Aveda’s dual foundation blends and reduces unwanted shine. Mirabella cheeky lip pencil defines the lips and is accentuated by Aveda’s pigmented lip color Moreno. Nicole Heislen’s Hair was designed by hair designer Brandy Brockets of Marshall & Company. It’s a soft, classic, romantic style. Added texture is created with the use of a curling wand before pinning up. Hair is prepped with Aquage Uplifting Foam and Sea Salt Texturizing Spray. Aquage Working Spray and Aveda Control Force combat humidity and give firm hold. Aquage Beyond Shine gives a glossy glow. Brockets also created Heislen’s makeup look. Her face is prepped with Dermalogical Skin Perfecting for highlights and to conceal blemishes. Aveda’s tinted moisturizer, Sweet Tea, evens out the complexion. Aveda and Mirabella cosmetics exude soft romance. Colors include apricot whisper for cheeks and opal and copper haze (all Aveda) for eyes. Black eyeliner pencil offer a soft, yet dramatic eye. Brows are shaped and enhanced using Aveda eye definer pencil in cacao. Aveda blackberry lip color completes the look. JC Jefferson City Magazine | 33

Contrasting Style A bathroom renovation expands to become a contemporary sanctuary. by S UZ ANNE G I B S O N photos by BE N M E L D RU M

W

When it came time for a bathroom remodel, it wasn’t the first time around the block for homeowners who built two homes from scratch and remodeled two others. “Redoing and rebuilding homes has kind of become my husband’s hobby,” the owner says. Although they built their home just eight years ago, the couple realized they wanted a larger shower area so that the room would be more functional and better suited to their needs. The only thing left in original positions were the vanities. Most all of the other features were repositioned, including the new oval bathtub now tucked behind a slate colored shower wall, in order to make for a more workable space. Previously, the bathtub ran long ways in the room and made moving around much more cumbersome. To take ideas to fruition, the couple enlisted the help of designer Michelle Higgins of Scruggs Lumber. “Michele guided the whole process, and she helped us think outside of the box when it came to making selections,” the owner says. “My husband has very conservative tastes, and I was initially concerned about how all of the pieces would come together. I’m glad we remained open to Michele’s suggestions because we both love it and could not be happier with the final results. There is nothing we would change.” According to Higgins, the goal was to transform the bathroom into a more modern, sleek look. The biggest challenge they faced was extending a wall in order to increase the area enough to double the shower size. “We wanted to completely revamp the old space,” Higgins says. “Once I showed my clients a layout of the new space with pictures of tile selections, they could visualize the outcome. They loved the concept as much as I had hoped. They began to trust me to move away from the tans, beiges and browns like with their former bathroom. ”

An oval soaker tub is a space saver and adds to the modern décor. Double sinks and ample lighting make for more efficent mornings. White tile with a wavy relief is one of the homeowner’s favorite features of the new bathroom. Jefferson City Magazine | 41

Contrast was important to achieve the desired results. “We used dark slate bamboo tile behind the tub on the outside shower wall and inside the shower is a white polished wave-patterned tile,” Higgins says. “The light and dark contrast provides the contemporary feel we wanted. Pebbled tiles on the shower floor bring in a touch of nature.” The owner encourages others who might be considering a remodeling project to find a designer they trust, and then be open to his or her ideas. “Michele was able to see the big picture, and she stays current with trends and products. I would not have thought to do what she accomplished. Working with her was a great value, and our bathroom is not only a lot more functional, it’s a room I really enjoy.” JC

BETH MCGEORGE RE/MAX THAT TIME OF YEAR

TOP 5 HOME RESOLUTIONS FOR 2016 By Beth McGeorge Fresh Paint Let’s face it. We live in our homes and sometimes our walls start to show it. A fresh coat of paint can breathe new life into a home. Not only does it refresh and give that new home smell, but modernizing colors make a home appear updated. It’s a cost-efficient solution. Clean Carpets and Flooring Accidents happen. Whether it’s a spilled drink, tracking in mud or an unruly four-legged family member, floors can begin to look dingy and worn. Rather than replacing, consider a good cleaning or resurfacing to achieve like new results. Revamp Master Bath or Kitchen Updated kitchens and baths offer some of the best return when selling your home, but there’s more to the story. How about updating those rooms while you have time to enjoy them? Many times I see clients get their home in tip-top condition before putting it on the market only to have remorse that they didn’t make updates sooner. Consider making upgrades now. Call us to discuss which changes can give you the most bang for your buck with upgrades. Clear Out the Clutter Study after study shows clutter creates additional stress, and most of us can relate. Let this be the year to eradicate clutter. Anything sitting in a closet or storage room that’s remained untouched for a year or more should go. Do you struggle with the process? Consider enlisting a friend or professional to work with you to get the job done. Let it Go Yes, it’s the popular quote from the Disney movie “Frozen,” but it applies to home ownership duties as well. Many homeowners have nagging chores they wish to complete yet constraints on time or ability get in the way. Often, calling in a professional is appropriate. If a project is not within your particular skillset, you might spend more time and money and end up with a less than perfect job. Whether it’s landscaping, painting or cleaning that’s making you feel defeated rather than victorious, it might be time to call a professional.

Beth McGeorge has sold real estate for RE/MAX Jefferson City for more than 10 years. Her success is attributed to her honesty, competitive drive and passion for the industry. The Beth McGeorge Team prides itself on exceeding clients’ needs and expectations throughout the process of buying or selling a home. Moving can be a stressful process. It’s great when you work with a Realtor who can guide you through the closing process and make it quicker and less stressful. 573-761-3489 | bethmcgeorge@remax.net | bethmcgeorge.com

MID-CITY LUMBER SMALL CHANGES

A NEW YEAR AND NEW LOOK By Gayla Schanbacher A fresh look for your home can start the year off right. Often, simple changes can make a big difference. Here are a few ideas to get you started: Now is the perfect time to change up your space. Most people rearrange furniture during the holidays in order to make room for holiday dÊcor. Once the tree and ornaments are packed away, consider arranging your furniture differently than before. Not only will it feel refreshing, it can change traffic patterns, which is good for your carpet as well. If you’re in the mood for something more dramatic, try adding color to ceilings. This creates warmth and can provide a nice accent for details such as crown molding. Pick a color that works with both the height of your ceiling and other colors in the room. Remember that dark hues should be reserved for larger spaces while light hues help to make smaller rooms look bigger.

Gayla Schanbacher is a native to Jefferson City. Schanbacher is a graduate of Helias Catholic High School and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in interior design from the University of Central Missouri. Upon graduation, she returned to Jefferson City where she has worked as a designer ever since. Schanbacher has been with Mid-City since 2008 and enjoys meeting people and building relationships. She loves how the design industry is always changing and says keeping up with styles, colors and trends means there is always something new and fresh on the horizon.

Consider painting your trim. Instead of a stained finish, choose a lighter paint color to help enliven and enlarge your area. A little change to your favorite spaces can be invigorating all year long.

SIGNATURE HOMES TEAM EFFORT CHOOSE YOUR BUILDER WISELY By Scott Schaeperkoetter Over the years I remain surprised how little effort many people put into selecting their builder. This relationship can be the most important part of the home-building process. I encourage you to find a builder who offers you a high comfort level. You will spend a lot of time together and will need to make very important decisions as a team. Here are a few pointers to help you find a builder right for you: • Select a builder with whom you can communicate. Communication is pivotal to success as scheduling and budget depend heavily on it. • Define your needs: Select a builder who builds a style that you like. Some builders are known for a broad range of home styles; however, others only build certain types of homes in specific price ranges. Make sure you have the correct fit. • Are their clients satisfied? Ask the builder for a list of past clients. Call each of them, and ask questions about their experiences. • Are design services offered? Decisions, decisions. Having someone you can trust to help you with the many cosmetic decisions can ease stress. Ask your builder if they have a full-time interior designer. • Select a builder who is involved and active with the local Home Builders Association. This involvement normally shows that the builder has a long-term commitment to the area.

Scott Schaeperkoetter is the owner of Signature Homes, a design-build construction company focusing primarily on creating beautiful, functional and individualized custom homes. Schaeperkoetter’s team is proud to have been named the No. 1 construction company by City Magazine for the past three years and a past winner of News Tribune's Top Contractor award. The company was also recently included in thinkstock.com Professional Builder magazine’s Top 40 Under 40. 2203 E. McCarty, Street, Jefferson City, MO 65101 | 573-635-7119

Tasks to Terrific

Now is the time to begin with a bang. Here are a few suggestions to start your new year off right. 1 Doctor checkups.

Schedule for the year. Be a good CEO when it comes to your health. Your life depends on it.

2 Vacations and staycations. Now is the time to plan where, when and with whom you would like to vacation. Schedule some stay-athome time as well. Budget your money and time now for a less stressful escape later.

3 Change your heating/ air filters. Put a seasonal (three-month) reminder on your cell phone. Buy filters in bulk, so you will always have one on hand.

4 Simplify, sweetie.

Now is the time to shed all unnecessary things. New York best-seller, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up,” offers great advice for clearing the clutter.

5 Inspirational book of the year. Find a book to help you reach your goals. Read, take notes and refer throughout the year whenever you need a boost or reminders.

6 Detail your car. Most of us spend a lot of time driving, and this can be a great time for reflecting and problem solving. A clean, clutter-free car makes for a more pleasant experience.

7 Out with expired food. Clean out your pantry and refrigerator. Expiration dates might surprise you. Be sure to wipe down and deodorize. White vinegar works like a champ.

8 Schedule BFF dates. Make sure to schedule time each month to be with loved ones and friends. Time can sneak by without seeing those you love if you’re not intentional about it.

9 Get your 2016 planner. Research which system will work best to help you stay organized and on time.

10 Revamp footwear. Your feet support your entire body, and they deserve good care. Make sure your shoes are clean, repaired, stylish and comfortable. Discard or donate any shoes that no longer suit you.

Diet is a noun for a way of life and dieting is an action verb, which means it is something we do on occasion, such as before or after holidays or for the short duration when New Year’s resolutions actually last. Dieting is a short-lived fad while a diet is a lifestyle decision. Unfortunately, too many people search for fads to help shed pounds quickly. Truth be told, the only real solution is simple. It consists of lifelong healthful eating. Although eating right might not seem as interesting as the trendiest “quick-fix” craze, eating a balanced, varied diet with moderation is the key to success. Fad diets do not last and pounds often return with a vengeance. Many of these so-called “healthy” diets can be detrimental to your body. Eating a balanced diet is the only real way to ensure your body is getting all of the nutrients it needs in order to thrive while still maintaining a healthy body weight. Since a diet is a way of life, don’t expect to drop 20 pounds instantly. In this fast-paced, convenience-driven world, it is easy to become impatient. However, making gradual progress toward smaller goals is something you can work on throughout your life. Rather than making a drastic change all at once that would make anyone struggle, set SMART goals to take control of your new healthy lifestyle.

SMART is an acronym for specific, measureable, attainable, realistic and timely. Start with small goals that are specific to what you want to accomplish. Success with reaching your goal must be measureable because attainability is extremely important. If you aren’t able to see progress, you will lose interest. As hard as it might be, remain realistic with goal-setting. A homerun first off, can disappoint later if a strike out or even a single occurs. Finally, have a timeframe in mind when creating objectives. All of these things will help you reach goals, feel a sense of worth and accomplishment and continue to inspire you to make progress toward a healthy lifestyle. An example of a SMART goal might be: I will eat a non-starchy vegetable during both lunch and dinner five days per week. You can change your life and the way you feel and think by taking time to invest in a healthy lifestyle. So, begin now by setting those proper short-term achievable goals. JC

About Personal Nutrition Counseling at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital offers outpatient nutritional counseling for a variety of health conditions including weight loss. Because excess weight is a risk factor for diabetes, heart disease and many cancers, physicians are often willing to write an order for patients to have personal counseling with a trained dietitian. Services at St. Mary’s Hospital require a physician order and include private sessions for the patient and a family member. Good nutrition is an essential component for health management. Nutrition therapy is ideal for anyone interested in learning how to promote a healthy lifestyle, prevent health problems before they begin and successfully manage existing conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure. Medical Nutrition Therapy is a nutritional diagnostic therapy and counseling service for disease management. Services are provided by a licensed and registered dietitian. The RD provides MNT based on the protocols of the The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics developed to improve patient outcomes. JC

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Life’s Simple Seven Tips for fruitful, disease-free living. These seven measures have one unique thing in common. Any person can make these changes. The steps are not expensive to take and even modest improvements to your health will make a big difference. Start with one or two. This simple, sevenstep list has been developed by the American Heart Association to deliver on the hope we all have – to live a long, productive, healthy life.

1

Manage Blood Pressure High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. When your blood pressure stays within healthy ranges, you reduce the strain on your heart, arteries and kidneys, which keeps you healthier longer.

2

Control Cholesterol High cholesterol contributes to plaque, which can clog arteries and lead to heart disease and stroke. When you control cholesterol, you are giving your arteries their best chance to remain clear of blockages.

3

Reduce Blood Sugar Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose (or blood sugar) that our bodies use for energy. Over time, high levels of blood sugar can damage your heart, kidneys, eyes and nerves.

4

Get Active Living an active life is one of the most rewarding gifts you can give yourself and those you love. Simply put, daily physical activity increases your length and quality of life.

5

Eat Better A healthy diet is one of your best weapons for fighting cardiovascular disease. When you eat a heart-healthy diet, you improve your chances for feeling good and staying healthy for life.

6

Lose Weight When you shed extra fat and unnecessary pounds, you reduce the burden on your heart, lungs, blood vessels and skeleton. You give yourself the gift of active living, you lower your blood pressure and you help yourself feel better too.

7

Stop Smoking Cigarette smokers have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease. If you smoke, quitting is the best thing you can do for your health.

My Life Check® was designed by the American Heart Association with the goal of improved health by educating the public on how best to live. Go to www.heart.org/HEARTORG/ Conditions/My-Life-Check---Lifes-Simple-7 to get your own personal score. It’s free, and knowledge is power. Start making good choices now that can save your life later.

TOWN TALK

A Word from the Mayor

Carrie Tergin

O

Reflections and Visions for the Future One year ago I never would have imagined that I’d be writing this column, have an opportunity to share with you my vision for Jefferson City’s future or offer reflection on my time as mayor. Many have asked, “Do you like being mayor? Is it everything you expected?” My answer is yes. Being mayor is better than I ever imagined. I have received tremendous support and enthusiasm from the community, and that gives me the motivation to continue working hard for Jefferson City. The most asked question I get is “When are you going to do something with the old prison?” This project is a priority of mine. The Missouri State Prison site has great potential for development, tourism, growth, jobs and more. We are the only city with a state capitol, a river and a retired prison. I want to better realize such opportunity and look forward to working with the state and other partners on this exciting project. Just imagine the possibilities. What’s the biggest surprise? I sometimes get reactions from people who don’t know me, which include, “You’re the mayor?” Yes, I am our proud mayor. Although I might not fit the standard mold, I love sharing such reactions to encourage others to follow their dreams and go for their goals. You might just surprise those who doubt. Yes, I am young, vibrant, energetic, positive and driven. And, yes, I am the mayor. Most

of all, I am thankful and honored to represent the people of our wonderful city. What have I done so far? To begin, I hung a sign on my office at city hall that reads “The People’s Office.” My term is not about me: it’s about the people. Additionally, I am happy to have our first Lincoln University student representative, Jonathan Jackson, who is

I want to have conversations about MSP redevelopment and set measurable goals. I want dialogue with the state, meeting planners and hoteliers about a conference/ events/meeting center and find a way to bring such partners to the table. Let’s continue to be persistent about bringing Capitol

grandeur. Let’s look at how close we are to riverfront access and be encouraged by the many generous donors who are helping with this endeavor. My hope is to keep you informed every step of the way, so think about what you would like to see for the future of Jefferson helping us with several great projects. Since there is not enough space in this column to give a complete update, visit my blog at www.MayorTergin.blogspot.com where you will be connected with latest projects and events, citywide issues and solutions. What do I hope to accomplish? I plan to continue building partnerships with the state, county, schools and Lincoln University. I look forward to working with city council on goals and our city’s vision.

City. Please take a moment to write out a New Year’s Resolution for your town, and share it with me. Together we can do great things for our city. Here’s to an awesome 2016, and here’s to your health. Let’s all strive for a healthy community. Watch for the Mayor’s Seatbelt Challenge in 2016. And, here’s to those who protect and serve our city every day. We cannot express enough appreciation. Here’s to #JCMO in 2016! #CarrieOn! JC Jefferson City Magazine | 59

MICHELE BURROWS Program of choice: JCMG Weight Treatment Center

BEST PART OF THE JOURNEY: I feel like a different person inside and out. I’ve released the negative out of my life and replaced it with positive. I have more confidence and more energy. Better habits are allowing me to enjoy life again. I love being able to shop in different sections of the store instead of just the plus size section. I love the way exercise makes me feel at the end of a great workout. Of course, I love hearing people say, “Wow, look at you!”

Lost: 80 pounds

I feel like a different person in and out

LIFESTYLE CHANGES: I make different, better and healthier choices. Exercise is now a daily routine. I make sure to get plenty of sleep, and water is my beverage of choice. In the past food called my name, but now I have more control to say “no” or sometimes even “yes.” Learning portion control has been key. OVERCOMING CHALLENGES: Forgiving myself is important. I realize this is a lifelong journey and there will be challenges. Now that I am armed with good information, it helps me make better choices. I try to be prepared and plan ahead so that I can stay in control. Before this program, I didn’t have the self-confidence to do something about [weight loss]. Regaining my self-confidence also affected other areas of my life, which helped me to make better choices for myself and my son. WORDS OF INSPIRATION: You will wish you would have done this program much earlier. You will say, “I never knew how bad I felt.” Most of all, do it for yourself. You are important and worth it.

major turning point occurred for Michele Burrows when her doctor said, “Enough Michele, you could die!” She recalls sitting there in shock and then began to cry. With her weight spiraling out of control, blood pressure sky rocketing and self-esteem at an all-time low, Burrows was determined to change. She wanted to be there for her 10-yearold son and she wanted to regain a sense of self. “Food became a comfort,” Burrows says. “I didn’t get a lot of support in my marriage after having a baby, going back to school and moving into a high-level management position. Of course I had my friends and other family, but

it wasn’t enough. Stress levels were high, and food was a sort of consolation. My major weight gain happened over a period of time with most of it after my son was born.” It was advice from her sister that prompted Burrows to contact JCMG Weight Treatment Center to make an appointment. She knew immediately during orientation that this attempt at weight loss would be different. “I was going for me and my son and no one else.” she says. “I was drawn to the JCMG program because it’s medically supervised and provides education for eating and exercising the right way. It works for me because I learned exactly what I needed. Weekly meetings gave networking opportunities with others like me, and the professional staff provided education and support as well. It helped me develop a game plan, or rather a life plan, on how to live a healthy lifestyle.” Four months into the program, Burrows lost 60 pounds and then another 20 over the course of a year. “I personally knew many people that did the program with success,” Burrow says. “I wanted fast weight loss under medical supervision. I felt [quick results] would help keep me motivated and help my selfconfidence to continue. Any program is only as good as you allow it to be.” Looking back, it’s almost hard for Burrows to remember life before her successful weight loss venture. “Carrying the extra weight affected my life in many ways,” she says. “My attitude was poor, my health was in bad shape, and I basically had no energy to do anything. I didn’t have the self-worth or mental strength to stand up for myself and make changes to better my life and that of my son. The JCMG program has been nothing but a positive experience for me. They helped me to identify what caused my overeating and bad habits. I don’t want to allow [weight gain] to happen again. I enjoy being a happier and stronger person.” To learn more about the JCMG Weight Loss Treatment Center, call 573-556-5774.

LAUREN ALLEN Program of choice: Sam B. Cook Healthplex Lost: 130 pounds

I have gained so much confidence

lost 130 pounds BEST PART OF THE JOURNEY: I have gained so much confidence. I am able to go places and not constantly worry if people are staring at me or wondering what they are thinking. I have much more energy and am able to focus better during school. I can authentically share the many positive effects of exercise since I know them firsthand. LIFESTYLE CHANGES: I now know how great it feels to be happy with my body. The mental health effects of exercise keep me going to the gym daily. My hobbies are more active now such as taking runs with my mom, bike rides and pick-up basketball games with friends. I have lifelong friends at the Healthplex and couldn’t ask for a greater group to spend an hour with every day. OVERCOMING CHALLENGES: Exercise is the easy part. Making healthy food selections can be a huge obstacle. I try to plan out my meals each week to help keep me on track. I also like to give myself a cheat meal once every two weeks to help with cravings because I’m only human, and I love ice cream and pizza. WORDS OF INSPIRATION: If you fail, keep trying. I tried to lose weight throughout my entire adolescent life and was unsuccessful. Find what works for you and stick to it. Decide why you are changing your life and put a reminder somewhere that you will see every morning. Fight for it. You are the only person who can change your life, and your body is a diary of your lifestyle.

Before 70 | January/February 2016

fter being accepted into the nursing program at Lincoln University, Lauren Allen decided it was time to get her own health under control. Over the course of 12 months, she dropped 130 pounds and has successfully kept off the weight for more than a year. “It was clear to me that if I wanted to spend my life helping others improve their health, I needed to first help myself by setting a good example,” Allen says. Her trek began at Sam B. Cook Healthplex where she attended group exercise classes and admits: “I was more than nervous to

walk in and participate alongside others who had been attending this gym for years, but to my surprise everyone was extremely supportive and encouraging. When I started to see weight come off, I was instantly hooked. This group is like a small family, and they keep me accountable. My daily routine has become habit and it helps me relieve stress, feel better and catch up with the friends from the group classes.” Remembering back to early childhood and through her first year of college, Allen was never able to wear the clothes she wanted simply because they did not come in her size. Although she played sports in high school including softball, basketball and track, the extra weight made running a struggle. “I made jokes at myself before others had the chance because it hurt my feelings less,” she says. “During college I was constantly tired and couldn’t even walk stairs without feeling completely exhausted.” As for many people, food became a reward and a way to console herself during times of stress or sorrow. “We live in a society that incorporates food into nearly every activity of daily life including family gatherings and outings with friends,” Allen says. “Soul food was coined for a reason. It is easy to splurge more than you realize.” Although Allen attempted to lose weight repeatedly, her former attempts were disappointing and never lasting. “I didn’t have the resources I needed. Previously, I would walk into a gym and feel as though everyone was staring at me, and I didn’t feel like anyone was willing to actually help me.” Today, dropping from size 22 to 12, Allen attributes her success to Healthplex instructors who tailored a program geared to her specific struggles and successes. “I love the highintensity workouts and the encouragement they give me to come back each day and be better than the last,” Allen says. “The group fitness classes are the answer I had been searching for, and [instructors and classmates] keep me accountable if I do miss class. This program has also taught me so much about nutrition. I used to make food choices based on my emotions, but I’ve learned how to provide my body with the nutrients it needs. The energy and support here is contagious for success.”

MAXINE MILLER Program of choice: Advanced Spinal Rejuvenation

BEST PART OF THE JOURNEY: I can breathe all the way up the steps to my work area. I can breathe at night when I lay on my back and not feel as though I am suffocating. I look in the mirror and feel wonderful about myself. I do look much hotter now.

Lost: 104 pounds

I look in the mirror and feel wonderful about myself

LIFESTYLE CHANGES: I am still me, so my lifestyle is the same other than eating habits. Friends should always be friends whether you are plump like I was or less plump like I am now. I have a great family and a set of friends who support me and who are very proud of me. I love feeling healthy. OVERCOMING CHALLENGES: Since I’m still in phase one of the Ideal Protein Weight Solutions program, I’m not yet running into challenges. In the future, I can imagine the desire for inappropriate food and eating in moderation will present temptations. I’ve learned better ways of eating and looking at food, and I know it will continue to help me keep the weight off. WORDS OF INSPIRATION: Try it. What do you have to lose? For me, I lost almost half of myself. Getting to and maintaining a healthy weight can and will change your life for the better. Don’t think solely in terms of financial costs of the program. Remember to consider health risks and potential health costs if you don’t lose weight. You deserve to do this for yourself.

t was an annual checkup that prompted Maxine Miller to take a serious look at her weight gain. She was having trouble breathing, and her doctor thought she was having an issue with her heart. Health concerns were, for the first time, giving her an uneasy feeling about her health. Miller admits that her weight gain happened over a period of time and complacency kept her from taking a serious look at losing the weight. “I have a great network of support with my friends and family, so they accept me for me,” Miller says. “They loved and supported the larger me, and they also like the smaller me. A ‘cherry on top’ about this whole experience has been that after losing weight, I not only feel better with much more energy, but I look better

and clothes shopping has actually become fun. These are all bonuses.” On her doctor’s recommendation, Miller decided to get serious about her health, and it was during a health fair where she met up with Christie Thompson, Ideal Protein coach with Advanced Spinal Rejuvenation. “Running into to Christie was perfect timing after my physical came back so scary,” Miller says. “The Ideal Protein program they offered seemed easy enough when Christie started explaining it to me. I loved the idea of prepared, good-tasting meals. The no exercise part, at least in the initial phase, was appealing as well. It was encouraging that I could lose an average of three to seven pounds per week with a program that has been around for more than 25 years.” Over the course of a year, Miller was able to lose 104 pounds and she plans to continue losing more until she reaches her personal goal of 113 pounds, her weight as a senior in high school. The goal of the program, which is medically designed and follows a restricted carbohydrate protocol, is to help her eventually reach a desired 25 percent body fat. “I like the coaching and support I get every step of the way,” Miller says. “The Ideal Protein program is easy and convenient and it works. They’ve helped me learn about which foods to eat together for maximum results.” Since Miller is just in phase one, she looks forward to seeing even more results in the future. While past attempts at losing and keep weight off were unsuccessful, Miller has found a program that suits her needs and lifestyle. “I’ve learned better ways of eating and looking at food, and I know it will continue to help me keep the weight off,” Miller says.

Advanced Spinal Rejuvenation can be reached at 573-636-6400 for more information about the Ideal Protein Weight Solutions program.

Willing Success Chris and Liz Russell partner together to build a thriving collision repair business from the ground up.

The very heart of an entrepreneurial spirit is the determination to start your own business and then the strong grit to do whatever it takes to make it succeed. Chris and Liz Russell, owners of Xtreme Body & Paint, know firsthand the hard work that goes into owning a business built from the ground up. “Chris has always had the drive to own his own business,” Liz says. “He’s a go-getter, but you have to be that way to own your own business. You have to want to work hard.” The passion for collision-repair work and the creative paint jobs that go with it began for Chris in high school. He started working for a local body shop as a teenager but then launched his own business with his wife, Liz, in 2003. What started out as a small, family-owned business with a three-bay garage has now grown into a business with multiple locations and 28 employees. Xtreme Body & Paint, now with two locations in Jefferson City, provides collision repair services, including painting and refinishing, metal repair and replacement, frame and body work, alignment and detailing services. Although their Country Club Drive location often services smaller vehicles, the larger-scale facility on Lomo

Drive, which also includes Xtreme Powder Coating, can accommodate larger vehicles and machinery. This location often services semi-trucks, farm equipment and even custom airplanes. While Liz manages the financial part of the business, Chris is busy with cost estimates and overseeing other parts of the business. He also spends much of his time out in the shop where his passion for collision-repair work originally took hold some 20 years ago—with the painting.

“I really like this industry. Something comes in wrecked, and we get to fix it up. Customers see it and are like ‘whoa!’ I like to see how slick you can get a paint job.” – Chris Russell “I really like this industry,” Chris says. “Something comes in wrecked, and we get to fix it up. Customers see it and are like ‘whoa!’ I like to see how slick you can get a paint job.” According to Liz, “He likes to see if he can outdo the other painters.” This teamwork and camaraderie between husband and wife, as well as their 26 other employees, is what keeps Xtreme Body & Paint growing. The Russell’s, who have three kids: Paige, 16, Jordan, 11, and Larah, 2, hope it will be a lasting legacy and family business carried on through the generations. “It’s hard work running your own business, and you are constantly reinvesting,” Liz says. “We hope our kids will take interest in the business someday to keep it moving forward.” JC

No Time for Slowing Down Ed Gross, age 95, says movement is the key to longevity. BY SUZANNE GIBSON PHOTOS BY ANTHONY JINSON

H Ed Gross remains active as ever, and he and wife, Margaret Ann, take to the dance floor several times a week to prove their vitality.

78 | January/February 2016

He’s more adept on the dance floor than most 20-year-olds, and at 95, Ed “Babe” Gross is one of greatest motivators at the YMCA West workout area. In fact, he and wife Margaret Ann, age 85, are most days either working out or dancing somewhere together. “It helps keep the weight off and has definitely helped me stay healthy,” says Gross, who has been working out, instructing dance or dancing himself most of his life. A regular fixture at Y West, Ed drives Margaret Ann and himself from their home across town for weight training and cardio workouts no less than four days a week. According to Jared Jackson, senior service associate, “There is nothing about Ed that isn’t remarkable. You can’t help but love his candor. He is not afraid to tell it like it is. He pushes people to be the best they can be. He’s told me a time or two that I need to get going [with workouts]. I can’t help but love his straightforwardness. His very presence, at 95, brings along so much vitality and drive. He is an inspiration to all of us.”

UNDER YOUR NOSE Known around the area for his skills as a dancing instructor, Gross got his start in 1947 as a square dance caller while employed with a local insurance company. According to Ed: “The company coerced me into calling. About 40 people showed up and only five of us could be talked into training as a caller. The first time I tried, they asked me to sing the calling, and I completely butchered it because I was not a singer. My voice cracked. I was terrible,” he says. Ready to hang it up, Gross was asked to try again but this time he would just speak the calling. “It surprised me when they called back and explained there are two kinds of callers, speaking and singing. I eventually got the hang of speaking the calls, but at first I would have to watch the dancers to even know which moves I was calling.” Through the years Gross danced with partners Margaret Ann or his eldest daughter, Rhonda, and taught line and ballroom

Becki Collier

Corporate Events Director for the American Heart Association Photo by Ben Meldrum

I realized is that the American Heart Association is home. When the opportunity came available for me to return to an organization that I love so much and to have career growth as well, I couldn’t pass it up. My position is more than just a job I do every day; it is my passion. It’s enjoyable to wake up every morning knowing that money raised to help fund research could save a life of someone I know, someone that I love. That is an incredible feeling.

D

DO YOU HAVE A NICKNAME? Becki is what I have always been called, but my real name is Rebecca. YOUR CURRENT JOB TITLE AND NUMBER OF YEARS/MONTHS IN THAT POSITION: In addition to being corporate events director for Jefferson City, I am also interim director for Columbia. I was with American Heart Association for seven years, left for one year and then returned three months ago. PLEASE LIST YOUR FORMER JOBS AND NUMBER OF YEARS/MONTHS IN THOSE POSITIONS: Marketing/communications consultant, SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, July 2014 – August 2015 Admissions director, Metro Business College, June 2005 – July 2006 Vice president of sales, Marceline Mapping, December 2003 – June 2005 WHAT BROUGHT YOU BACK TO THE AHA? I learned so much over the last year and feel fortunate for the opportunity to have worked at St. Mary’s. However, what 84 | January/February 2016

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY: My husband, Matt, and I have been together for 13 years and are celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary this year. We have four amazing children who keep each day exciting and busy. Jacob is 18 and just recently graduated high school. He is now serving our country in the United States Air Force. We couldn’t be more proud of his accomplishments and the path he has chosen for his future. Hayden is 17 and is a junior at California High School. He eats, sleeps and breathes Pinto football. Emilia is 8 years old and in 3rd grade at California Elementary School. She enjoys soccer and is a budding artist. Henry, our big “little” man, age 2, keeps us wondering what is coming next. My family is my world, and I have been blessed with an amazing one. FAVORITE CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION AND WHY: The American Heart Association has always been a passion of mine. Even as a child, I recall jumping rope for the AMA. Each day I have the privilege of working with survivors in our community who have been touched by this disease, and their stories inspire me. Personally, I have been touched by the tragedy that this disease can cause in a number of ways. I have family members, very close to me, who are still living because of the work we do. After my Uncle, who I am very close to, had openheart surgery a few years ago and he told me to tell my team, “Thank you. You saved my life.” That is a moment I will never forget. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR IMMEDIATE AND LONG-TERM GOALS NOW THAT YOU

ARE BACK WITH THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION? Immediately, I look forward to breaking new records with this year’s Heart Ball. This is our 25th anniversary, and I am excited to work with our many volunteers to make it an unforgettable event. Long term, I want to continue to reach out to more individuals and companies to spread awareness about our mission. Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 4 killers of Americans. In fact, someone dies of these diseases every 39 seconds. That means that one in three people will be affected. Awareness has to continue so that we are empowered to change the future for our children and all of our loved ones. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO IMPACT THE JEFFERSON CITY COMMUNITY? I am grateful to be a part of such an amazing community. I hope that I can help to spread awareness and encourage people take control of their health. BIGGEST CAREER OBSTACLE YOU’VE HAD TO OVERCOME: Fundraising is certainly not an easy job, yet it is very rewarding. It can be challenging to come up with new ways to approach raising money. Fortunately, we are blessed with a giving community. GREATEST PERSONAL CHALLENGE WHERE YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED SUCCESS: Just last year we had a child with major health issues, and that was definitely the greatest personal challenge of my life. There is no worse feeling than being unable to fix your child’s pain. Thankfully, he is fine now and that scare is behind us, but juggling the needs of one child while taking care of the rest of the family and a career was challenging. I hope to never go through that situation again. WHAT DO YOU FEEL ARE YOUR STRENGTHS? WEAKNESSES? My greatest strengths are my ability to build relationships and my desire to attain goals. These strengths allow for success in my line of work. Whether with volunteers, sponsors or survivors,

relationships are key. I could not do what I do without a lot of support from others. My greatest weakness goes along with my best strength. I enjoy working toward and attaining goals that are set for me or that I set for myself. I often am quite hard on myself trying to reach those goals and won’t stop until they are accomplished. ACCOMPLISHMENT THAT MAKES YOU MOST PROUD: Personally, being a mom makes me most proud. There is nothing harder or more rewarding than helping to shape the lives of our children. Professionally, over the tenure of my AHA career, we have raised more than $2 million to change and save lives. The satisfaction of this accomplishment is beyond what words can convey. FAVORITE PLACE TO SPEND A SATURDAY AFTERNOON: Without a doubt, it’s with my family. My favorite Saturdays are spent going to Vigil Mass, enjoying dinner together at home and then watching movies or enjoying conversation and s’mores over the fire pit. LAST BOOK READ: Honestly, I am reading the “Spiderwick Chronicles with Emilia,” and it’s a Dr. Seuss book with Henry every night.

FAVORITE TV SHOW: “Nashville” FAVORITE COMFORT FOOD: Pasta of any kind. FAVORITE APP: Facebook IDEAL VACATION: I love the beach. I would love to take my family to the Caribbean at some point. SECRET ASPIRATION: As a youngster and teen, I dreamt of being a professional singer. I participated in every singing activity I could during school and traveled to talent competitions throughout the state during the summers. SOURCE OF INSPIRATION: My family. They teach me something new every day about what is important in life. I am blessed beyond words to have each of them. I also get to work with amazing volunteers and supporters that inspire me daily. The time, effort and heart that they pour into their passion for this cause are awe inspiring. It is what keeps me going every day. FAVORITE HOBBIES: Cooking, being with my family and shopping. WHAT IS A FUN FACT ABOUT YOU THAT MOST PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW? I love music and am often singing and dancing when I think no one is watching.JC Jefferson City Magazine | 85

ver dream a dream so big you questioned if it could become reality? This is the story of big believers who rolled up their sleeves and brought in countless others to change the lives of kids at risk. It’s a story about generosity and hope, but mainly it’s about a group who truly cares about local kids in need of extra love and support. For many years the Boys and Girls Club of the Capital City offered afterschool programming, homework support and nightly meals in the former Wallis Oil gas station located on Elm Street. Although this original building was an ideal location to serve nearby neighborhoods, the Missouri Department of Transportation had plans for an interchange to run through this structure. The buyout meant $425,000 for the Boys and Girls Club, yet a replacement building, rehabbed or new, would cost more than $2 million. Initially, the situation was one riddled with discouragement. The old building about to be torn down, a new building needed with not enough money and an unsuccessful search for space in an appropriate location. Yet obstacles began to dissolve when Dr. Kevin Rome, president of Lincoln University, offered to

build a new Boys and Girls Club on the LU campus. “Dr. Rome received care and support from the Boys and Girls Club in Georgia when he was a kid growing up, and it greatly impacted his life,” says Stephanie Johnson, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club. “He felt this was an opportunity to pay forward. For us to be located on a college campus is huge for our kids because many of them can’t begin to envision going to college.” With a new building now within reach, there was still the challenge of raising a large sum of money in a short amount of time. Johnson, who had been in non-profit fundraising before coming to the Boys and Girls Club in 2011, immediately recognized the momentous task at hand. “I knew this project would take a dream team,” Johnson says. “There needed to be a balance of strategic and creative thinkers to achieve an ambitious goal of $2.2 million. The key would be to get the right minds and talents on board.” As a woman on a mission, Johnson compiled the initial group including Jim Vossen, Dan Westhues, Donna Westhues and Hallie Gibbs. As a Boys and Girls Club board chair, Vossen was already a strong

pillar on the strategic side. Dan led the charge from a business prospective. When it came to the creative side of the campaign, Donna and Gibbs were standout choices for their heart, energy, charisma and community connections. According to those on her team, Johnson’s leadership and passion for Boys and Girls Club was also a key asset for the campaign. “Stephanie is a talented lady,” Gibbs says. “Her enthusiasm and love for the kids is phenomenal. The solid foundation she is creating for the Boys and Girls club will continue on, and this program will be an anchor in the community to better the lives of many kids for years to come.” With initial leadership in place, the team gained momentum and eventually recruited passionate community members under various campaign divisions, such as big gifts, public campaign and grant writing. The expanded campaign team included Bernie Fechtel, Mike Kehoe, Ann Littlefield, Tami Turner, Chuck Walker, Travis Stephens and Janet Wear-Enloe. The kickoff campaign launched in November 2014, and the team worked tirelessly to rally others in the community. Hope for kids in need was a message that Jefferson City Magazine | 87

resonated and many bighearted donors and volunteers wanted to find an immediate solution. “The most memorable part for me is the generosity of our community,” says Dan Westhues. “There was not a single no. We shared the story, and everyone got on board.” Although Donna had the tough task of asking for large gifts during the campaign, it was a small gift from a mother that struck a chord in her heart. “Stephanie told me of a single mother who gave $5,” Donna says. “Her child attends the Boys and Girls Club, and her gift was equal to giving $500 for some people. This was all she had, but she gave it.” It is the heart and passion of the initial leadership and many others that allowed a new state-of-the-art building to become a reality. On Nov. 18, Boys and Girls Club broke ground on the LU campus and 88 | January/February 2016

announced that they had exceeded their goal by raising more than $2.5 million in one year. Weather permitting, construction begins in January of 2016 with doors expected to open as early as fall of this year. Extra funding will allow the basement to be finished in order to house a much needed teen center. “This building will be there for a long time, and it will change the lives of thousands of kids—kids who need us the most,” Johnson says. “My vision is that the kids of Jefferson City will walk on campus as a child of Boys and Girls Club and walk off as a graduate of Lincoln University.” This new structure symbolizes hope for changed lives, and it is a dream bigger than all on the team could have ever imagined. population of 300 and no public library. The school library was really important to me. Mrs. Gross was the librarian, and she took an interest in me and recommended books she knew I would like. I learned at an early age that reading could make the world less big, less lonely. It helped me to realize that other kids were experiencing similar things.

WHAT HAVE YOU READ LATELY THAT YOU LOVE? I keep going back to a poem by Wendell Berry, “Manifesto: The Mad Farmer Liberation Front.” I’ve reread the entire poem several times this week. I am especially drawn to these lines: “So, friends, every day do something that won’t compute. Love the Lord. Love the world. Work for nothing. Take all that you have and be poor. Love someone who does not deserve it. Denounce the government and embrace the flag. Hope to live in that free republic for which it stands.”

IF YOU COULD CHOOSE AN AUTHOR TO TAKE TO LUNCH, WHO WOULD IT BE? I like Mark Twain, but I might be in too much awe to talk to him during lunch. I would probably choose Anne Lamott. She has a lot of heart. Her life is messy. Her writing is vulnerable, honest – a little crazy. I think we could have a casual, fun lunch.

HAVE YOU ALWAYS ENJOYED READING? Yes. I grew up on a farm, and we didn’t buy a lot of books. My little town had a

DO YOU PREFER FICTION OR NONFICTION? Nonfiction. Whatever is going on in the world or if there is something you want to know, whatever you’re into, there’s a nonfiction book for it. I like to read Malcom Gladwell, Gordon Livingston, Jon Krakauer, David Sedaris and Laura Hillenbrand. Nonfiction has so much variety – humor, leadership, biographies, cooking. I’m curious about a lot of things.

Life is hectic, yet a slower pace just after the holidays is an ideal time to pause and enjoy the simple pleasures. What could be more perfect than dinning out with friends around a warm, quietly crackling fireplace? DJ Drury, owner of Canterbury Winery, hosted a few of our friends for an exquisite dinner. The setting was complimented by delightful appetizers and entrees, signature drinks and wines, great conversations and lots of laughter. Friendships were made, rekindled and deepened. We hope you will enjoy viewing the food and festivities. Table and mantle designs were artfully and graciously provided by River City Florist. It was an evening to remember and one we hope you will consider for you and a group of your friends.

talian fishermen in San Francisco first developed Cioppino in the mid-1800s. There are two main versions of its evolution. Most believe the recipe is an altered version of an Italian soup, Ciuppin. Others believe that fishermen threw fish and other seafood into a communal pot for supper after a day’s work. Each called out to the other in broken English,

"Chip in! Hey you, chip in!" These phrases are believed to be root words for Cioppino. Rob Agee, owner of Madison’s, shares a few ingredients that he uses to create this nourishing dish: Our rich broth consists of fresh tomatoes, onions, salt, pepper, garlic, butter, oregano, basil

and a dash of crushed red pepper. Mussels, cod, scallops, squid, ocean clams, large shrimp and king crab legs are used as the seafood melody. Grilled sourdough bread points, dipped in olive oil, make for the perfect compliment. JC

ARTIST PROFILE

Burning the Musical artist and entrepreneur Quinten Rice fulfills big dreams and looks to a promising future. BY LAUREN SABLE FREIMAN | PHOTOS BY BEN MELDRUM

S

ometimes Quinten Rice manages to catch a few hours of sleep. Although he says he could probably benefit from more shut eye, he is willing to sacrifice restful nights to live out his passion for music and entertainment. Rice plays bass for The Cherry Pistols, an 80s pop and rock cover band for which he also does some backup vocals. And, he plays with Murphy’s Ford, an original pop country band with southern rock and blues influences. Sometimes, between the two bands, he plays four to five shows each week. “We’ve been fortunate with The Cherry Pistols to be sought after,” Rice says. “We have a great product, a great sound and we’ve taken hold in this area.” Playing in two different bands with dramatically different styles allows Rice the unique opportunity to cover other artist’s music while also being able to create original music with a unique sound. Murphy's Ford is currently working on tracks in Nashville and St. Louis for their first album. “I enjoy learning other people’s music, but it’s nice to have an original band to play with where you’re building something from the ground up,” Rice says. “It’s a nice balance to have.”

While Rice rocks out on stage at night, often supported by his parents, Dan and Norma, in the audience, his days are equally full juggling several business ventures. He is the owner of the SPACE, a 3,500-squarefoot facility offering nine different “incubation spots” where artists and art can thrive and grow. Most of his customers are Jefferson City-based artists, but some are students at Lincoln University. For Rice, it was important to help create opportunities for other artists where they might not otherwise exist. “We have everything from a closet for people to keep gear in to a large room for people that do a lot of rehearsals,” Rice says. “It’s a spot for people to work so you’re not trying to practice in someone’s basement or garage.” Rice has also partnered with Holly and Nathan Stitt to develop Avenue HQ, an events center that he is preparing to open in January 2016 on Capitol Avenue. When it opens, Avenue HQ will have 5,000 square feet of space for events. It will also provide artists with work space and gallery space. He hopes to attract artists of all mediums, including culinary arts, painting, sculpting and music.

And, in a partnership with John Johnson, Rice is also working to open Qs on High, a restaurant at 911 E. High St. "I have partners in the restaurant and the events center, but I'm the guy who gets the ball rolling to organize and facilitate them," Rice says. "These were properties that were in need of rehab, and I wanted to be a positive catalyst. They had both been abandoned for some time." To round out his already packed schedule, Rice, who earned a degree in hospitality management at the University of Missouri at Columbia, has also spent the past 12 years working as a server, bartender and host at Madison's Cafe. "The owner, Rob Agee, is a great guy to work for," Rice says. "They've been very willing to help me out and they understand that if I'm tired, I was out playing a show until 3 a.m." Although he credits his brother, Jarret, for encouraging him to pick up a guitar as a kid, Rice says he is thankful to teachers and others along the way who helped foster his passion for music. Because of opportunities that others helped create for him, Rice was marching with the high school marching band as a sixth grader and working at a radio station at age 15, and he has decided to devote Jefferson City Magazine | 103

his time to paying it forward to help other budding artists in the area. "I love Jefferson City, but there are some aspects that I think need to be improved," he says. "A lot of artists don't have a good chance for exposure, and I want to create good platforms for them to be exposed and recognized for their hard work. That is the common theme across my ventures." As he looks toward a future full of growth, Rice is humbled by the help, the open doors and the encouragement he has found along the way. "I need to give credit to the man upstairs," Rice says. Tiger for Life Erwin Milne, attorney and diehard Mizzou fan, shares a positive outlook even while struggling with Multiple Sclerosis.

E

BY TOM LOEFFLER

Erwin Milne was a student at the University of Missouri for seven years, but he was hardly on the lazy man's plan to avoid real life as long as possible. After getting his degree in agriculture, Milne earned his law degree three years later in 1974. During his time in Columbia, you could say he was a Tiger fan — he missed one game in seven years. That would be a football or basketball game. The one game? A football game against Kansas. Really? Kansas, of all games? Why? "I'm a devout fan, but I went home that weekend," says Milne, age 66. "I knew Kansas was going to win. They had quarterback David Jaynes, who was really good and I just couldn't watch it." He was right because Kansas won. That was in 1972. When you visit Milne these days, his door is still decorated with a Missouri wreath that's covered with Tiger paraphernalia. Once inside, his Missouri Christmas tree is still up. On the walls and shelves you'll find Missouri logos, emblems and stickers, Missouri neck ties, a Missouri nerf basketball hoop, Missouri curtains, Missouri hats, a stuffed Tiger, a Missouri coconut dressed up like a football and a framed picture hanging over his bed of a basketball game at Mizzou Arena. 106 | January/February 2016

"I've been a Missouri fan all my life, for all time.” – Erwin Milne They just don't know. Unfortunately, there's no script with MS. Milne grew up in Oregon, Missouri, a small town just north of St. Joseph in northwest Missouri. That's where his love for the Tigers started to blossom. "I've been a Missouri fan all my life, for all time," Milne says. He graduated from South Holt

High School and became an Eagle Scout, which is the highest attainable rank in the Boy Scouts. After college, he worked as an attorney in Trenton for six years before moving to Jefferson City in 1980 and continuing his practice until 2011. "That's when I really became disabled," he says. He moved into a Jefferson City nursing home on a date he'll never forget, August 16, 2011. His life is mostly constricted to this one room, which has become his very own shrine to the Missouri Tigers. Nestled amidst the Tiger gear is a simple, one-word placard that says: "Smile." Despite all he's been through, Milne still does smile while generously sharing his infectious laugh. You see disgruntled people every day, who grouse and complain about their plight, when they truly

have nothing significant to grouse or complain about. Milne doesn't grouse or complain but smiles, and his spirit, outlook and attitude remain undaunted. How does he do it? "People my age have cancer and other things worse than MS," he says. "Other people have worse troubles than I do. And I have a strong [Methodist] faith." Milne loved to read but can't anymore due to his failing eyesight. But his wife and best friend of 31 years, Jennifer, who still teaches at Jefferson City High School, reads to him on a regular basis. His favorite author is James Lee Burke, who's a mystery writer and a graduate of, not surprisingly, MU. Milne spends most of his days, "…watching TV and sleeping. I love ‘NCIS,’ but I've seen them all a hundred times," he says. There's a picture on the wall next to his bed from World War II of his father with his Marine squad. His dad was the only one smiling. "I guess," Milne says, "I came by it honest." When he could, Milne played golf and loved to hunt deer, quail and pheasant. "I really miss that," he says. So if he could get out of that wheelchair right now, what would be the first thing he'd do? His answer was quick and easy. "Take my wife out to dinner," he says. As our visit came to an end, we said our good-byes, shook hands and shared a hug. As I reached the door, I turned to him and said, "M-I-Z ..." Milne's eyes grew big and bright and his volume went to another level. "Z-O-U!," he said loudly and proudly with a burst of enthusiasm. And of course, he said it with a smile. Capital City teenage sweethearts Don and Katie Whitener met when Don was 19 and working at Safeway. Katie, age 16, came through his checkout line, and Don asked around until he got her phone number. One wedding, two kids and 39 years of

marriage later, the couple has never dreamed of living anywhere but Jefferson City. “We love this town,” Katie says. Today, as empty nesters, their kids are grown but still nearby. Don, a sales manager at N.H. Scheppers, and Katie, a reading specialist with Jefferson City Public Schools, say they planned to someday downsize their living quarters. “We thought about it but in the future,” Don says. “If you would have told me a year ago that

Within a few months of their decision, construction was in process, but planning for the new house was half the challenge. Saying good-bye to the house they had lived in for 29 years was not as simple. “Thirty years earlier, we had very different ideas,” Katie says when reminiscing about her family’s earlier years. “You can see the kids’ heights measured since age 10 in the garage.” NEW HORIZONS Although the couple realized they could have stayed put, not using all of the rooms in their prior home seemed like a waste. “We wanted a space for us,” Don says. “A space where we can be comfortable for a long time and have room for friends and family.” Over the past few years, both children have returned to town to raise families. Their son, Tom, served the Army in Afghanistan before fulfilling his dream of joining the Jefferson City Police Department. Daughter, Emily, had ambitions to be a teacher in Jefferson City. Today, she teaches kindergarten at Bel Air Elementary. With young grandkids nearby, their new 1,800-squarefoot home is a welcoming space with one-level living, three bedrooms (one currently used as an office) and a master suite designed to their liking. The open floor plan lends itself to large family gatherings (30 were hosted at Thanksgiving) or simply enjoying time with the grandkids. “The openness between the dining room, living room and kitchen allows me to stand at one end of the house and look through to the other,” Don says. Katie says that from the beginning, they stayed focused on non-negotiable items on their wish list such as a shorter, flatter driveway and a living area all on one level. “It’s easy to tack things on that sound like a good idea,” she says about the building process. “We tried to stick to the game plan, which is harder than it sounds.” Michelle Higgins, an interior designer at Scruggs Lumber, helped the Whiteners through the design process and says they did a good job of staying on budget while developing the home they wanted. “It turned out beautifully,” she says while complimenting the home’s soothing color palette built in a traditional craftsman style. “Michelle was wonderful,” Don says. “She was our goto person.” Don describes the construction process as “a lot of fun” and admits to the benefits of a great partnership with Eggen. “Dennis treated our house as if it where his house,” he says. Soft neutrals and a vaulted ceiling give the room a spacious feel.

are obvious standouts. Under the surface but important, the energy efficiency of a groundsource heat pump, LED lighting and spray foam insulation add to the home’s value. LETTING GO Moving from a house filled with 29 years of memories to a home half the size is an exercise in careful selection and purging. “I was slow to start,” Katie says. “At first I was panicky over all that we had to do but then ended up being less sentimental than expected. I was so looking forward to our new home.” To make downsizing more manageable, they began with easy decisions such as things that weren’t important and then moved to those objects that couldn’t be parted with. “We jumped in looking at the stuff we didn’t want and what we definitely wanted to keep,” Don says. “There were three sort areas: garage sale, don’t keep and keep.” Having their kids nearby also helped with the passing along of furniture and decisions regarding childhood keepsakes. A keep pile consisted of family photos and artwork, a German railroad clock from Katie’s mom and dad, a table handmade by Don’s grandfather and special antiques and other family treasures. “If it is important, they will keep it,” Katie says about letting her son and daughter select. “We don’t want to just sit on things. We want to keep meaningful family things. It comes down to family value and asking, what you use.” she says. For the Whitner’s, their new home, filled with precious family pieces, is where they look to spend years to come and there’s still plenty of room for family and new memories. JC

Museum of Missouri Military History Housed at the National Guard Headquarters, the museum is rich with history from frontier life to current day militia. BY RACHEL KURZ AND MADDOX LAWRENCE

Although the State Capital is where many go to gain insight into Missouri’s past, the opportunity to view history through another lens is available at the Museum of Missouri Military History. And, it is one not to be missed. The importance of military cannot be understated, and here, many crucial events are illustrated through a variety of detailed displays. Located at National Guard Headquarters just south of Jefferson City, the museum has recently undergone a transformation that has yielded exciting results. Formerly, the museum was housed in one of the oldest buildings from the original Algoa property dating back to the early 1930s. As collections grew and storage became more difficult, the museum was moved to the mechanical school where the National Guard Resiliency Center is also housed. Charles Machon, museum director, says, “Our new museum has exceeded my wildest expectations. Not long ago the building was a grease-stained maintenance shop. It’s been quite a successful transformation.” Because of his background in history and vast understanding of storing and displaying artifacts, Machon says, “I could not help but think of all the obstacles we initially faced to make this a suitable location. Yet, those obstacles were overcome and the end result includes refinished floors, climate control systems, display cases, interior walls, display plinths and platforms for large exhibits. We are more than pleased.”

The expanded space opened for public access in December 2014 and has since had more than 6,500 visitors. In addition to Machon’s expertise and passion, dedication and support from Adjutant General Steve Danner, other National Guard members, volunteers and patrons have produced results enjoyed by visitors from at least thirty states and twelve countries. “Preserving history and heritage is a priority for General Danner, whose leadership has made the expansion of the Museum of Missouri Military History a reality,” Machon says. Upon arriving at the museum, visitors encounter several static displays including the Sherman M4A3E8 tank, more commonly known as the EZ-8, and various aircrafts including the most recent addition to the museum, an F-4E Phantom II (previously displayed at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis).

“Our new museum has exceeded my wildest expectations. Not long ago the building was a grease-stained maintenance shop. It’s been quite a successful transformation.” — Charles Machon, museum director Arranged in chronological order, more than two centuries of military history is on display. A Vietnam-era Huey Helicopter is housed there, which attests to the enormity of its role in military history. Cannons, vehicles and dioramas provide a diverse and exceptional perspective of Missouri’s military history. Experiencing the diverse roles that Missouri Guard members held throughout history highlights the importance of military both in times of war and in times of peace. Although the artifacts and equipment are central to the experience, the museum has more to offer including archived documents of Guard Unit histories, research materials from the Missouri Naval militia, service records from the 1920s and 1930s, State Emergency Duty (SED) and history of Missouri from the American Revolution to present. All of this information helps to paint a picture of Missouri’s past and the many contributions made by the military. Each exhibit is created with diligence by Machon, volunteers and interns. Hours of research, conception and crafting goes into every exhibit in order to show historical significance and tie into the overall history of Missouri's involvement in the military.

The largest collection is from Major Joseph Koch, which features more than one thousand pieces including uniforms, personal effects, military manuals and personal book collections. The State of Missouri abounds with history from every area of the American experience. From frontier life to urban development, the state has played a large role in American History. Through discovery by Lewis and Clark, division by the American Civil War and the home of several infamous military leaders, Missouri offers both locals and visitors the experience of history in various forms. The Museum of Missouri Military History is more than a local attraction. It is a testament to the endeavors that the military has faced and serves to provide lessons for future generations. Visitors can explore the museum Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the exception of state and federal holidays. Groups of 10 or more are encouraged to contact the museum at least two weeks in advance to schedule tours, and all are welcome to reach out to the museum director, Charles Machon, for further inquiries. Huntline Dental Group ... because we love to see you smile! MEET THE STAFF “…a lady called in stating that her two front teeth were recently knocked out. She was scheduled for exam that same day, right before our lunch break. After a quick look, Dr. Jon was adamant that the patient would NOT leave our office that day without her front teeth. Doctor and staff worked through their lunch break to ensure that the patient’s smile was restored that very same day.

I am VERY proud to say that I work at Huntline Group!” This gradient will be a dot patternDental for printing. Will convert once approved.

Ali Esterly, age 31, has riveted her way to success as a creative director in LA. Not a market that breeds easy success. Her portfolio, not shabby either, is riddled with names such as Google Search, Google Maps and YouTube. Her list of awards, in no short order either, include The Webby’s, Communication Arts, The FWA, CSS Design and W3. So what’s her secret? Without question, Esterly attributes local roots as the reason for her current achievements. “In creative advertising, hard work pays off,” Esterly says. “I was fortunate enough to grow up with a Midwest work ethic. I work hard and care about my projects, and I think that has helped to make me successful in my career. I appreciate how the Jefferson City community surrounded me with so many nurturing individuals who helped me grow.” Esterly first moved to California in 2009, at a time when she

claims “getting laid off was more common than getting a job.” After graduating from the University of Missouri, she attended and graduated from Miami Ad School and was anxious to begin working, so she moved to LA and opened her own design shop, Th3Factory, and stayed busy for a year. Then, in 2010, a call from David & Goliath, a nationally recognized advertising agency, invited her to join their creative team. After working on the agency side for two years on big name projects, she “took a break from the grind” and decided to freelance. Then another agency came knocking, and she accepted a job with Hook, a nationally acclaimed digital creative agency. Still busy and in demand, her current stint is with 360i, ranked among the top 10 agencies by Advertising Age. While California is where Esterly resides, a year doesn’t go by without a return visit to home. “My

loving family has molded me into the person I am today. They have always encouraged me to follow my dreams and have helped me make all of them realities. They believed in me every day and still do. It’s awesome to have such supportive cheerleaders in my corner.” Fondest childhood memories are many for Esterly, and she recalls one of her earliest mentors, Wynn Riley, youth musical director, “as getting me out of my shell when I was a shy five-year-old who only wanted to hide behind my mom’s leg.” Others on the list include Coach Zeitz, who taught that dedication and determination in golf and life absolutely pay off, Mrs. Noonan, eleventh-grade creative writing teacher and Lola Rice, “the best nanny ever, is such a carefree and creative spirit. I am blessed that a lot of that rubbed off on me.” Performing and creating always came natural for Esterly as she shares: “My absolute

favorite activity in high school was performing in the spring musicals. Being

Auditorium stage gave me so many beneficial traits that I still use in my current career. I learned confidence, mastered the art of looking at ease under pressure and, most importantly, I learned to appreciate how it feels to love what you do.” It was longtime family friend, Tom Durkin, from Jefferson City who helped Esterly make the decision to move west. “Hearing about how he made the leap to the big city made the possibility of the jump seem more realistic to me.” And today with stardom as a creative director in the bag, Esterly still loves and knows her roots. “It’s always nice to come home to warm welcomes from familiar faces,” she says. “Jefferson City people are, hands down, the kindest, most genuine breed I know.” JC
