Jefferson City Magazine Ones to Watch

A

Editorial

As we celebrate our seventh year recognizing young leaders who make a difference in our community, I want to congratulate one of our very first Ones to Watch (OTW) recipients, Mayor Carrie Tergin! In 2008, Carrie, along with Chris Schrimpf, Hawthorn Bank; Ryan Freeman, Freeman Mortuary; Sarah Alsager, Missouri Department of Agriculture; and Beth McGeorge, RE/MAX, made up the first OTW class, and they have grown in their professional careers and are recognized civic leaders. In fact, City Magazine’s past OTW winners have all made us proud. They continue to grow and give back to Jefferson City, and all are respected leaders. This year’s OTW class is no different. They are striving for excellence within their prospective fields, but more importantly, they speak that same language of, “I want to give back to my community and make Jefferson City the best place it can be.” As you read the OTW recipients’ bios, you will see how different they are, but you will also notice a common thread. They all care about the betterment of people, especially children and seniors. These are the young leaders every community needs, and they make me feel good about Jefferson City’s future. They work with local programs such as the Boys & Girls Clubs, Young Life, United Way and Capital Projects to help build strong youth with character and values. They support our veterans through the efforts of Operation Bugle Boy and help provide much-needed nutritional supplements for those battling cancer. I personally respect all of these young leaders, and all of our past OTW winners, because I have seen the work they do and the hours they give back. Their work equates to hours of unselfishness time, but the rewards are great for all. So to the 2015 Ones to Watch: You are the leaders who mentor and lead people to be the best they can be. As John Quincy Adams said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”

Another Season

The warmer weather is coming none too soon for me. As we take this issue to press, I look forward to all that late spring and summer have to offer. Fun outdoor events such as Thursday Night Live, Stars Under the Stars, the Chamber Barbecue and many, many great things to do and experience are ratcheting up in Jefferson City. This is a great time to run through our Datebook, rally family and friends together and mark off which events you would like to attend. Try out a few new ones while you’re at it. As far as things to do close by yet out of town, by all means head to the Lake of the Ozarks. This summer getaway is a regular weekend hangout for many. Our featured home, which sits on property once occupied by an original lake cabin, is not only stunning, but it also is inviting, family friendly and a great place for business outings. Its owners are fascinating people who teamed up with other creative souls throughout the rebuild process, and the results are magnificent. Visiting with the owners, being in their home and writing the story have me yearning for lake time. Not to be overlooked are three additional getaways that are not too far yet provide completely different venues to experience and explore. There is a tree house where both children and adults can spend the night, cliffs to climb and a cave (watch out for some really cute bats) to explore. Then, there are all of the special people who volunteer their time and unique talents to make our city even more special. I feel sure you will enjoy reading about our motorcycle brigade that rides to help veterans whenever its members find a need. There is a Habitat for Humanity house being constructed as I type, and the list goes on. We live in a busy town. Here’s to the beginning of an awesome summer!

Be blessed,

Our Next Issue ➻ Family is the focus

Stay tuned for the July/August issue where we showcase everything family, including a home that lives well with lots of love and wear. We will bring you ideas for a range of ages, from health to summer gear. Don’t miss great around-town activities to be shared with your loved ones.

A Lake of the Ozarks rebuild strikes the perfect balance between refuge, adventure and togetherness. By Suzanne Gibson Photos by keith borgmeyer

Jefferson City Magazine | 27

Memories made at the Lake of the Ozarks go way back for the Werner family. With weekends and summers spent fishing, skiing and hanging out with family and friends, the area has captured many of their best childhood memories. “My father always said, ‘The more the merrier,’” Werner says. “Being at the lake is a tradition for us, and I wanted to teach my children and future grandkids to water ski and fish. I wanted a place where they could bring their friends. We create a lot of great moments here together.” When the couple searched for lake property in 2013, they were amazed to find two and a half acres on a well-established cove, which included 367 feet of lake frontage. As one of the original lake homes built in 1958, the property is minutes away from popular nightlife spots including Lazy Gators, Shady Gators and Camden on the Lake. Several of their neighbors are from Jefferson City as well. “The lake is a busy place, yet because we are situated on a quiet cove with good acreage, our place is tranquil,” Werner says. “We see a ton of 28 | May/June 2015

wildlife and deer and can canoe and kayak. You just don’t come across property like this anymore. We have such an awesome setting.” Although location was ideal, early after purchasing the home, the Werners found that due to foundation cracks and newer building codes needing to be met, it was necessary to tear down the house and build a new structure. “It was our intent to add on to the original home because we loved the history and its old-time resort feel,” Werner says. “We had remodel plans drawn but eventually realized rebuilding was the way to go because new codes made it too cost prohibitive to keep the original structure. The renovation process took nearly a year from start to finish.” Today Werner enjoys her spacious eight-bedroom, nine-bath home with family and friends and also uses it as a rental property for corporations and individuals.

“Overall, I wanted our home to be a traditional and timeless space to entertain and enjoy loved ones. And it’s just that.” — Paige Kampeter

Included throughout are lots of creative touches, such as a map of the lake accented by a large red pushpin to show the home’s location. Jefferson City Magazine | 29

Crafted from native rock, the fireplace is framed by chairs made from antique ski pieces. Fun and surprising touches such as these are found throughout the home.

“We enjoy the openness yet togetherness here,” Werner says. “We designed this home as a great way to spend a vacation. The bedrooms are intentionally small so you don’t spend much time there, but you want to be in the living room or outside with others.” Werner credits her friendship and working relationship with husband-and-wife team Ed and Cathy Mueller, owners of Up A Creek In Style, for what allowed her to take ideas into action. “I first met Cathy at her original store on Highway 54,” Werner says. “She had the most amazing logwood furniture on the front lawn, and I needed to decorate our farmhouse. We started brainstorming over lunch and have been working together from that home to this one. I bring her ideas, and she puts great twists on them. The creative process we share is fantastic. “Between Ed, who is an excellent carpenter, and my husband, they can always find a way to make it happen,” Werner continues. “It helps that both men have patience and a great sense of humor. So often we enjoy looking at the finished perfections throughout our home knowing the collaboration, workmanship and hard work it took to complete. It has definitely been a team effort.” As a final nod, Werner was particularly pleased when Angela Jackson, daughter of the home’s original owners, Jack and Thelma Judy, stopped by during the rebuild process. “I found the family’s old photo albums under a bed and had been trying to reach the former owners to return them,” Werner says. “Out of the blue, Angela stopped by one day and shared great stories about Jefferson City Magazine | 33

The

Gardenette Gardening big in small spaces By alice longfellow

The gardenette, or small garden, can offer the ideal solution when gardening space is limited. Many varieties of herbs, veggies and flowers can live well together in tight spaces, and they often offer yummy and beautiful yields. To begin, peruse unused corners or small pockets of ground available to you. This is a great opportunity to let your imagination run wild. Some of the best gardenettes are in unlikely places such as next to a bench, mailbox or a small unused corner. The next phase is to decide what you would like to grow and check instructions to see how much space is needed. Intensity can be created through plant variety, color and seasonality. Both annuals and perennials offer a splendid pop of color and can provide a beautiful bouquet throughout the season for you to cut and enjoy. An added bonus to a gardenette often means maintenance is easier. Have fun, and design it to suit your needs.

Shrubs Small shrubs provide year-round structure in the gardenette. How many to use will depend on the space available. The smallest shrubs eventually grow about 3 feet wide, so plan accordingly. Evergreens provide greenery during the winter and can make a nice backdrop for flowering plants. Consider dwarf forms of spruce, arborvitae, boxwood or holly. Flowering shrubs add color with their seasonal blooms. Deutzia, caryopteris, crape myrtle, weigela and roses come in varieties that stay small.

Flowering plants A few perennials in the gardenette provide reliable color year after year. Some of our favorites are echinacea (PowWow Wild Berry), coreopsis (Crème Brulee), catmint (Purrsian Blue), allium (Millenium) and rudbeckia (Little Goldstar). Garden phlox, tall sedum, salvia and iris are good standbys. The foliage of heuchera will complement most any design, as do small grasses (carex) and variegated liriope. Annuals are a must to fill in gaps that may occur. Even though they are planted each year, the color they provide is outstanding, and they are also economical. For best performance in sunny spaces, plant profusiontype zinnias, angelonia, vinca, gomphrena, lantana and supertunias. Begonias, impatients and torenia are the best flowers for shady spots. Use colorful foliage to accent in the shade. Daffodils are the optimal bulb for any garden, though crocus offer nice color as early as February, and hyacinths smell wonderful. Because the foliage on bulbs stay around after blooming, place them in areas where annuals will be planted, or place them behind clumps of perennials that will hide dying foliage.

Herbs and veggies Smaller and nonaggressive herbs such as oregano, thyme, chives and sage are easy to place in the gardenette. Treat basil like an annual; plant it in May for months of fresh pesto. Likewise, smaller vegetables work well in little gardens, some offering attractive colors. Plant early-season veggies such as carrots, beets, turnips, onions, kale, broccoli and Brussels sprouts. Lettuce, spinach, radishes and bok choy can be used along the garden edge. Summer vegetables such as peppers, eggplant and even compact tomato varieties make nice additions to the gardenette. If a fence or trellis is available, cucumbers and pole beans can be trained as a backdrop. Avoid corn and large vines such as watermelon or pumpkin as they require a lot of room to produce. Combine any of the plants listed here for an interesting and productive gardenette — a garden to suit your needs. JC

I This gardenette is particularly attractive because of descending heights from back to front.

mpeccable taste greets your senses as you enter the foyer with grand ceiling heights and double tray ceilings. A sitting room/ office is off the main area for an additional space to make your own that even outlets onto a private porch.

The full kitchen with breakfast bar and granite counter tops will delight the family cook.

Hydrangeas are reliable and beautiful and also make good anchor plants because they are perennials.

Healthy Skin for Always

E

Learn ways to protect, nurture and reverse sun damage.

Everyone knows prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation leads to increased risk of skin cancer, right? What most don’t realize is that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime and that one death occurs every hour from it. Those are alarming statistics!

Malignant melanoma, the most deadly

form of skin cancer, is now one of the most common cancers among people ages 15 to 29 years, and though it constitutes only 3 percent of all skin cancers, it causes 75 percent of cancer deaths. This should be enough to hold our attention. 46 | May/June 2015

By Dr. Chandra Prasad Too much ultraviolet radiation exposure can cause: • Cataracts and macular degeneration, which causes blindness. • Loss of elastin, which causes the skin to sag, stretch and lose its ability to snap back. A breakdown of elastin also makes the skin more susceptible to bruising and tearing and increases healing time with wounds. • Aging or brown spots, which are precursors to skin cancers and may begin to appear as early as in your 20s. • Fine wrinkles and lines, red blood vessels called telangiectasia and a general unhealthy look to the skin.

It isn’t known exactly which components of ultraviolet have the most cancer-causing effects because most UVA and UVC rays don’t reach the earth’s surface. Scientists are concerned, however, that the earth’s atmosphere is changing. With those variations may come an increase in the amount of UVA and UVC rays reaching the earth’s surface and an increase in the risk of skin cancer and premature aging. The good news is that with proper care and protection, you can have healthy, youngerlooking skin. It all begins with education and proper care.

h e a l t h a n d w e l l n e ss

What to Avoid and Follow • Sunburns during childhood. Anyone over 6 months of age should wear sunscreen daily. Infants should be shaded from the sun as their skin is too sensitive to the chemicals in sunscreen. • Tanning beds. People who use tanning beds are 74 percent more likely to develop malignant melanoma than those who have never used them. Many states and cities have enacted restrictions or bans on tanning beds due to this risk, especially for use by children. • Balance sun exposure. Sunlight has three types of ultraviolet radiation known as UVA, UVB and UVC. UVB has the most known negative effects. However, it also has the positive effect of promoting vitamin D formation in the body, and achieving an acceptable balance of ultraviolet exposure is important. We need to have sun exposure for vitamin D metabolism. Vitamin D is essential for proper calcium absorption, which leads to stronger, healthier bones as well as numerous other essential metabolic functions. Sunlight exposure also leads to a normal circadian rhythm due to proper melatonin synthesis as well as a reduced risk of seasonal affective disorder. In short, the sun is a necessary part of our lives.

Protect Your Skin Wear your sunscreen daily, and remember there are a lot of misconceptions about its use and effectiveness. Sunscreens should protect against both UVA and UVB radiation. Although UVB is the primary culprit behind sunburn, UVA increases the cancer-causing effects of UVB and promotes premature aging in the skin. Sunscreens vary in their effectiveness with blocking both types of ultraviolet radiation, so it’s important to understand what’s written on the product’s label. SPF is short for “sun protection factor,” which is the ability of the sunscreen to prevent UVB from damaging the skin. If unprotected skin turns red in around 15 minutes, then SPF 20 will theoretically take 20 times longer to harm the skin. Another way to look at it is that SPF 15 will block 93 percent of UVB, SPF 30 will block 97 percent and SPF 50 will block 98 percent. This might seem like small differences, but if you are sun sensitive or genetically prone to skin cancers, this will make a huge difference over time. No sunscreen is 100 percent effective at stopping ultraviolet exposure. On top of that, no sunscreen is effective after two hours, and reddening of the skin is only indicative of UVB exposure. You may have UVA exposure without any sunburn. Sunscreen should be applied in the morning and reapplied throughout the day. Mineral sunscreens such as titanium and zinc do not degrade like chemicals but can rub off while swimming or exercising. You should apply one ounce, about a shot glass, of sunscreen and reapply every two hours. Most people use about a quarter of this and rarely reapply. Solutions Most of us had little knowledge of the harmful effects of tanning when we were younger and are now paying for those sins. All of these cosmetically unappealing issues begin early in life and worsen with time. Even if you are a faithful sunscreen user now, you must remember that what is happening today had its beginnings many decades ago. So in addition to protecting yourself today, it is important to remove and repair damage that has already occurred. Jefferson City Magazine | 47

h e a l t h a n d w e l l n e ss Step 1. Good skin care: Medical-grade products that have passed the rigors of scientific studies demonstrate a reduction in the rate of skin cancers. Also, they have benefits regarding anti-aging. If your skin is healthy, then it will be more beautiful. The end result is that you will not have to cover up imperfections with makeup. The basic products everyone should have are growth factors, retinols, moisturizer and sunscreen. Growth factors improve the texture and appearance of the skin by enhancing the growth of collagen. They are an absolute necessity, in my opinion, for anti-aging. Retinols also improve the youthfulness of the skin by increasing skin cell turnover. Additionally, moisturizers hydrate the skin to keep it healthy, and sunscreen will protect it from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation. Step 2. Reverse damage: Consider procedures and machines to reverse sun-damaged skin. Some of the most beneficial procedures are chemical peels, which come in varying strengths and can be customized to fit your needs. Peels will lighten the brown spots, smooth the skin and remove the dead skin cells, which leads to more youthful and healthier skin. Lasers are another option and should be used only by highly trained personnel and supervised by a physician. They offer a safe and effective way to combat damage done by sun exposure and tanning beds and can remove brown spots, smooth wrinkles, treat redness of the skin and remove unsightly blood vessels. Although the sun really isn’t our enemy, we need to learn to protect ourselves from the long-term effects of overexposure. Taking the time to educate yourself on what is available will assist you in keeping your skin healthy, younger looking and cancer free. JC

WillieJude II Willie Jude exudes out-of-the-box excitement about his role to help strengthen and expand Lincoln University as it celebrates its 150th anniversary. “The history of Lincoln University is simply riveting,” Jude says. “Our university is the only one founded by veterans, men of the 62nd and 65th colored infantries. As they retired their weapons from the Civil War, they wanted to arm themselves, their families and friends with something even more powerful — knowledge. How can you not be proud and motivated by this notion?” Jude works tirelessly alongside Lincoln University President Dr. Kevin D. Rome, the board of curators, the foundation board and the school’s national alumni association with fundraising efforts and more. “I am excited for the opportunity to assist our overall institution to greater fundraising success,” Jude says. “If we want our students to grow and prosper, we will provide needed support to our academics and athletics programs while supporting the university in fulfilling its mission, goals and master plan.” As someone who wears a lot of hats, Jude is accountable for leading the university’s fund development efforts including major gifts, corporate and foundation giving, annual giving and planned giving. He also has oversight responsibilities for several departments, including marketing, communications and public relations and alumni affairs. Laura Bennett-Smith, a co-worker who nominated Jude, speaks of his involvement and ability to effectively bridge the gap between the campus and community. “He cultivates learning and professional development opportunities within his team at Lincoln University to inspire others to be the best,” BennettSmith says. “Willie is an extraordinarily loyal, dedicated and positive person who brings great energy to everyone he meets.” Without a doubt, Jude’s favorite aspect of his career revolves around service where he can support students, employees and alumni in a variety of ways. “I have a passion to impact lives,” Jude says. “I have found that this field is a definite vehicle to reach out to those around you, directly and indirectly, in a valuable manner. This position is more than a job to me; it is lifework.”

Family: Wife, Joi N. Jude Charity of choice: Lincoln University Foundation Inc., Boys & Girls Clubs, United Way of Central Missouri “My parents instilled the importance of giving back to the community,” Jude says. “These organizations provide in-service learning, mentorship and coaching for diverse populations. These organizations foster environments that promote hope, healthy lives, positive thought and inspiration for education.” Community involvement: Jude is an ambassador for the Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce and involved with the United Way of Central Missouri Board of Governing, Downtown Rotary Club, Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals, Downtown Jefferson City Association, Eastside Business Association and Boy Scouts.

HannahSnitker For the eight or so months before she was chosen for Ones to Watch, Hannah Snitker wasn’t able to enjoy the obvious perks of working at a winery: Her third baby is due in early May. Fortunately her position as event manager at Canterbury Hill Winery offers Snitker plenty of satisfaction, as does her adopted home of Jefferson City. “I often get asked if I grew up here,” Snitker says. “The people I’ve met and built relationships with in a short time here is absolutely amazing.” Snitker was raised in the small town of Owensville in Gasconade County. She left home to attend Lincoln University, where she graduated with a degree in business education, earned the business department’s outstanding academic award and came to know the city as her new home. Snitker was hired at Canterbury Hill after spending time teaching, when she fostered the multitasking and communication skills that she now utilizes for event planning. DJ Drury, owner of Canterbury Hill and Snitker’s nominator for the 2015 Ones to Watch, says Snitker has been instrumental in the winery’s growth over the past two years. “Her leadership shines through her personality,” Drury says. “She is the real deal, from her smile to her top-notch organizational skills. She will tell you that her goal in life is just to make someone smile.” Snitker’s husband, Shawn, serves full time in the Missouri National Guard. With two daughters — Jillian, 4, and Berkley, 2 — and a third baby on the way, Snitker strives to maintain a healthy balance between work, family and community. “My motto is always, ‘Make a memory,’” she says. “Since we do live the Army life, my girls are raised knowing just how precious family time is.” When she was a young girl herself, Snitker dreamed of a job that would make people smile. With dedication and tireless commitment, she makes every occasion at Canterbury Hill feel like a dream event. “At the end of the day, when my client is completely satisfied, and they leave with a smile and great memories, I know my job is complete,” she says.

Family: Husband, Shawn; daughters, Jillian and Berkley; baby due in May 2015 Charity of choice: Boys & Girls Clubs of the Capital City “This charity holds a special place in my heart because of my passion for kids,” Snitker says. “Since I am no longer in the classroom, I feel this is one group I can still give to that gives me the satisfaction of helping and making a difference in a child’s life. We live in a world with great diversity and situations that are not always suitable for young kids. This is a great place for kids to maintain a normal lifestyle and get an equal opportunity in life in a safe place.”

Community involvement: Snitker is active in the Chamber of Commerce and loves being involved with the Boys & Girls Clubs. She helped Canterbury Hill become a vendor in Fork, Cork & Brews, a Boys & Girls Clubs event that helps raise money for scholarships. “Hannah is the backbone of our business donations, where they go and whom they can help,” Drury says.

TJRalston TJ Ralston seems to be genetically engineered for numbers, a skill that comes in handy as a commercial banking representative at the Jefferson Bank of Missouri. He has relatives in banking and business, and those early and ongoing role models set the stage for his current career path. Additionally, his degree in business administration from Lincoln University, where he attended on a golf scholarship, also helped solidify this choice. “Conversations with my uncle, who is CEO of a bank in a different state, helped to pique my interest to eventually pursue a career in banking,” Ralston says. His grandfather Leonard Ralston, who ran his own business and had a passion for helping others in the community, was Ralston’s greatest influence. “Not only was my grandfather a role model as a business owner, he was also an active volunteer in the community,” Ralston says. “His example led me into coaching and working with kids with the hope that they would develop into better athletes and also become more driven individuals as a result of lessons learned while playing athletics.” Ralston’s favorite part about working at the bank, which he says truly feels like home, is the daily interaction he has with customers and being able to help them meet their banking needs. “With the rapidly changing world of technology, TJ keeps up with the current trends and passes along his expertise to our customers,” says Ken Theroff, Ralston’s nominator and president of Jefferson Bank. “We are fortunate to have his enthusiasm on our team.”

Family: Wife, Lacy; sons, Brenden and Brock; baby due in April 2015 Charity of choice: Capital Projects Capital Projects provides a place of employment for young adults with disabilities for as long as they are able to work. Once an adult with disabilities exits the school system, after receiving a graduation certificate, he or she can be an important part of society in the workforce thanks to sheltered workshops such as Capital Projects. “My 27-year-old brother-in-law has Downs syndrome and has worked for Capital Projects for several years,” Ralston says. “He has given me the opportunity to witness firsthand what this provides for young adults with special needs.”

Community involvement: Ralston coaches the boys junior varsity basketball team at Helias High School and is an assistant coach for the varsity team. He has also coached Knights basketball (ages fifth through eighth grades) and is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and a Flamin’ Fellas participant for a Special Olympics fundraiser. Theroff says Ralston is a great role model for kids in the community. “His passion is infectious with regards to coaching,” he says. “Role models like TJ are hugely important in our community, and we know that the Helias basketball boys are blessed to have him.”

EmilyKampeter State government is always at the center of Jefferson City, and Emily Kampeter is always at the center of state government. Before taking over as government accounts officer at Central Bank, Kampeter did communications work for the state, handling legislative affairs for insurance and finance. Since crossing over to the private sector, the lifelong Jefferson City resident has been able to expand her influence in the Capital City. “My primary customer base is associations and nonprofits,” Kampeter says. “I use my government experience to navigate bid opportunities and understand the challenges those customers face.” Kampeter relishes the opportunity to contribute to the community that she grew up in. Her husband, Joshua, is also a city native, and Kampeter’s children, Sophie and Eli, spend regular time with their grandparents. Kampeter graduated from Helias Catholic High School and volunteered at St. Mary’s Hospital during the summers. She considered becoming a nurse but then decided another career might be a better fit. “I quickly learned I can’t stand the sight of blood,” she says. “I spent most of my time in the hospital gift shop.” Kampeter was nominated as a 2015 One to Watch by Central Bank coworker Twilla Duvall, who praises Kampeter’s humility and grace. “Emily’s contribution to the community goes hand in hand with her professional achievements,” Duvall says. “She treats each and every customer with respect and demonstrates outstanding attention to detail.” Duvall says Kampeter was instrumental in securing funding for Missouri’s participation in the Own Your Future long-term care insurance program, which is designed to help people plan for the costs of long-term health care in old age. Kampeter has also served in leadership positions at the United Way and the Jefferson City Council for Drug Free Youth. Kampeter hopes to ramp up her community involvement even further in the years to come, hopefully sparing some time for travel with her family and furthering her education. “I don’t ever want to stop learning and challenging myself,” she says. “I want to be remembered for my passion for my family, my work and my community.”

Family: Husband, Joshua, and children, Sophie and Eli Charity of choice: Young Life Jefferson City “This organization helped shape who I am today,” Kampeter says. “During high school, some amazing Mizzou students traveled to Jefferson City to hang out with my friends and me. They attended our school events, took us to summer camp and taught us about God’s love. Young Life impacted the choices I made as a young person and the decisions I make today.”

Community involvement: Kampeter is a committee member of Jefferson City Young Life, a campaign coordinator for the United Way of Central Missouri and a former president of the Council for Drug Free Youth. She is an active member of Immaculate Conception Church and a volunteer in the Samaritan Center’s Adopt-a-Family program.

AdamMietzner EcoWater is all in the family as Adam Mietzner followed in his father’s footsteps by coming on board. Before that, his father worked for his grandfather. “My father played a big role in my decision,” Mietzner says. “Looking back, I would have to say his drive to run a great business and to be successful is what attracted me to EcoWater. One day I would like to take over the business and continue on as the third generation to run an EcoWater dealership.” Performing a variety of roles including sales, service, installations, deliveries and office work has kept Mietzner busy during the decade he has been with the company. “I try to be as involved as I can in every aspect of the business,” Mietzner says. “I love being able to get out and be with our customers. It’s always fun to catch up with them.” Joel Mietzner, Adam’s father and employer, says his son’s excellent work ethic, passion, hard work and commitment are what make him a leader and a role model in the community. “Adam is willing and ready to help in any way that he can,” Joel says. “Any time he sees a need, he’s quick to lend his time, money and, most of all, his positive attitude and contagious smile. He is a great example of love, commitment, honesty, passion and respect.” Family is foremost for Mietzner. He says he’s grateful to his father, who encouraged him to become the best he can in every aspect of his life; his wife, Lydia, who strengthens him day after day with words of encouragement; and his kids, who inspire him to be a better father and husband. “It is my family, my church and Christ who give me the drive to get up every day to do the very best I can,” he says.

Family: Wife, Lydia; daughter, Mariah; and son, Micah Charity of choice: Operation Bugle Boy “My charity of choice is OBB because I believe in what they stand for,” Mietzner says. “OBB celebrates and honors Gold Star families. It's important that we remember those people who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. I also love to be around veterans and do whatever I can for them.” Community involvement: Mietzner says he loves to “give back time to a community that has given my family and me so much.” He’s a member of the Home Builders Association of Central Missouri board, works as chair of the 2015 HBA Home Show and is on the HBA golf and Christmas party committee. He’s also an Operation Bugle Boy Advisory Board member. He sings in his church’s choir and teaches a bible fellowship class with his wife.

NathanHays Jefferson City native Nathan Hays uses his sense of humor when he explains how he got into the car business. As a new member of the Chamber of Commerce’s Young Professionals group, he stood up and shared that he was unemployed with a college degree during a meeting with 70 of his peers. He says people he knew let out a chuckle, and his current boss approached him. “He told me, ‘If you have the stones to tell a room that you’re unemployed and laugh about it, you should sell cars,’” Hays says. “My grandfather owned multiple automotive dealerships in mid-Missouri before I was born, and he encouraged me to look into it more seriously. I interviewed a few weeks later, and the rest is history. Hays, who works as a sales and leasing consultant at Corwin Automotive Group, has a Bachelor of Science in wellness from Lincoln University with a minor in recreation from Missouri State University. Devin Fischer, who nominated Hays, says Hays has quickly become one of the most well-known and respected car salespeople in town. “He works hard to excel every day and exceeds expectations for all his customers,” Fischer says. “Everyone else’s needs come first, and Nathan is constantly looking for ways to help others.” Hays says his favorite part about his job is trying to turn a process that is typically seen as bad or stressful into something that’s fun and enjoyable. “I have tons of repeat customers, and many people call me weekly and ask, ‘Hey, do you still sell cars?’” Hays says. “When I say yes, I always hear a sigh of relief. That means a lot to me. I love to network, and I just enjoy helping people make buying a car fun.”

Family: Wife, Amanda, and daughters, Emily and Sophia Charity of choice: The United Way of Central Missouri The United Way provides assistance to seniors, children and the underprivileged in the community by promoting education, health and financial stability. “I’m involved with so many organizations,” Hays says. “Recently, I’ve tried to become more involved with the United Way as a whole because they cover a lot of ground.”

Community involvement: Hays is part of the Leadership Jefferson City Class of 2014, Jefferson City Day Care Center Board of Directors, Special Olympics of Missouri Flamin’ Fellas, Boys & Girls Clubs: Men of the Club, Boy Scouts of America Great Rivers Council Executive Nomination Committee and Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals. Jeff Naught Naught-Naught Agency opened its first insurance office in 1972, before Jeff Naught was even born. Naught grew up watching his father and uncles establish their business in Jefferson City and build connections in the community. Now, he is doing the same thing himself. “I had so much respect for my dad and my uncles,” Naught says. “I loved the idea of having a career that allowed me to be an active member in this community.” Naught began working at his family’s agency part time while he was attending the University of Missouri. His time at MU is marked by two significant documents: a degree in business management and his pilot’s license. When asked for three words to describe himself, Naught says “avid aviation fan.” He dreamed of being a pilot before he dreamed of being a certified insurance counselor. That’s not to say Naught doesn’t love his job; he had passed the requirements for his insurance license by his sophomore year of college, at which point he already knew his calling. “Navigating the insurance world alone can be very frustrating for our clients,” Naught says. “Sometimes claims happen, and if they do, then it’s motivating to know that I’m helping someone who’s having a bad day. I hate not being able to help everybody who walks into my office.” Naught-Naught has expanded since 1972 and now has 12 locations throughout mid-Missouri. Naught, however, still loves being deeply in touch with his hometown. “I love meeting with business owners to talk about their business,” Naught says. “They are so passionate about their businesses, and I like being able to help protect them.” Naught and his wife, Kristi, have one daughter and another child due in August. Kristi says her husband is patient and a good listener, things that go a long way when listening to clients. Naught was nominated for the 2015 Ones to Watch by his friend Bill Plank, who says Naught is “involved with pretty much every charitable organization in Jefferson City.”

Family: Wife, Kristi; daughter, Keller; baby due in August 2015 Charity of choice: American Cancer Society and Boost BBQ Naught-Naught Insurance Agency has hosted the Boost BBQ, benefitting cancer patients, for 22 years. Naught-Naught employees grill food and raffle off items to raise money. Jeff Naught is proud of the event and motivated by the cause, saying it provides “much-needed nutritional supplements for those battling cancer.”

Community involvement: Naught is an enthusiastic member of the Jefferson City Airport Advisory Committee and volunteers with the United Way, the American Cancer Society and the Goldschmidt Cancer Center. He is a current member of the West Side Business Association and a former board member of the Downtown Jefferson City Association. JC

Building as a Tradition The Bentlage family finds unity in the hard work that comes with constructing houses. B y H e at h e r F e e l e r Photos by anthony jinson

Building a house is a lot like raising a family. You must start with a strong foundation and then work together to build it right. Or, in the case of the Bentlages, you could just skip the metaphor and actually build houses together, day after day, as a family business and a way for generations to bond. Kent Bentlage, owner of Kent Bentlage Construction Co. Inc., started building houses with his dad, Vic, at an early age. Working with his hands and learning from his dad was something he always loved to do. “It’s the only thing I’ve ever known how to do since I started helping my dad in elementary school,” Kent says. “When I was in high school,

BU S INE S S PROFILE I couldn’t wait to get out and do it full time so I could be outside and work with my hands.” The construction business is a family tradition that has paid off. After being mentored by his dad for several years, Kent started his own construction company in 1993. His crew of five, including himself, builds eight to 10 residential houses a year, ranging in price from $150,000 to $1 million. It’s the personal touches and the hands-on approach that make a difference in the homes they build. “There’s lots of custom stuff that gets built into our houses, and we build them at the shop or onsite, which gives customers much more bang for their buck,” Kent says. “I’m also on the job site every day working on the house, which means I’m also there for my clients when they need me.” It’s a work ethic that Kent learned from his dad and one that Vic learned from his dad, also in construction, and his grandfather before that, in a long line of hardworking carpenters from Germany. This family tradition has served them well regardless of the generation. “When you’re on the job every day, working hard, your team looks up to you so much more,” Vic says. “I never asked anyone on my team to do anything I wouldn’t do myself.”

“It’s the only thing I’ve ever known how to do since I started helping my dad in elementary school. When I was in high school, I couldn’t wait to get out and do it full time so I could be outside and work with my hands.” — Kent Bentlage

Vic continues to work daily, including with his son from time to time, building houses. The crew is made up of mostly family including one member who is the son of a former crewmember of Vic’s, Kent’s nephew and also his future sonin-law. They are proof that working together not only builds a strong family but also a quality house at the end of the day. Jefferson City Magazine | 77

“There is lots of family still involved, and every one cares as much as I do,” Kent says. “My dad always had a good reputation, and I’ve carried that along. It is important to treat people fair and also deliver a good product.” It’s that caring and attention to detail that keep clients knocking on the door, and it’s also what keeps them coming back to have additional houses built. “I often end up building multiple houses for people, which makes me think I must have done something; the client is always right,” Kent says with a laugh.

“When you’re on the job every day, working hard, your team looks up to you so much more. I never asked anyone on my team to do anything I wouldn’t do myself.” — Vic Bentlage

At the end of the day, after the long hours and hard manual labor, it’s the family that makes it all worthwhile. “It’s been fun working with my son all these years,” Vic says. “Kent is my son, but he’s also been like a brother to me.” JC

In what he considers a calling and not just a career, Jefferson City native Adam Ziegelbein celebrates his one-year anniversary as a financial associate with Thrivent Financial, a not-for profit membership organization with a faith-driven purpose. “The best thing about my job is being able to work with Christians,” Ziegelbein says. “My members and potential members are some of the best individuals in our community.” Ziegelbein himself is no exception. As a young boy, his Marine officer aunt sent him USMC T-shirts and sweatshirts, and because of her example, he dreamed of one day serving in the armed forces as well. Childhood visions became reality when, after high school, Ziegelbein needed to fund his college education but didn’t want to take on school loans, especially when he was unsure of a career path. Mark and Alice Steward Corps seemed Joining the Marine like the next logical step.

While serving from 2000 to 2004, Ziegelbein supported logistic operations around the world within his communications battalion and worked his way up to the rank of sergeant within three years. During this military stint, he developed a love for teaching, motivating and inspiring young Marines to set and complete their personal goals. After a year of training in California, Ziegelbein was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, for two years. Then he returned to Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, where there wasn’t even time to unpack. On Feb. 14, 2003, his unit was moved into Kuwait for an invasion of Iraq. Ironically, on that same day, both of his grandparents and four of their friends were killed in a head-on auto collision. “The sudden loss of my grandparents impacted my family in ways I had never imagined,” he says. “That is why I am passionate about helping everyone I meet protect their family.”

In addition to being a financial associate, Ziegelbein organizes volunteers and helps build River City Habitat for Humanity houses in Jefferson City. Jefferson City Magazine | 83

When Ziegelbein returned to Missouri, he worked an IT job for eight years to support a growing family. Yet, this career path didn’t fulfill an ongoing yearning he had to help others, and it wasn’t until his insurance agent encouraged him into the industry that Ziegelbein felt headed in the right direction. “Working as an insurance agent gave me back the ability to teach, motivate and inspire others,” Ziegelbein says. “I knew immediately it was what I needed to be doing.” Soon after, Thrivent Financial entered his life, and everything seemed to merge from there. This new position as financial assistant allotted Ziegelbein an even greater chance to help others transform their finances so they could live better and help others in the process. “They [Thrivent] offered me the opportunity to combine a career that I love with a company that has values that align with my own,” he says. Thrivent Financial is owned by its members, and financial assistants such as Ziegelbein work on clients’ behalfs and are accountable to them, not stakeholders. In this role, he teaches member clients how to be wise with money and live generously, a combination that changes lives by impacting the community. “There are several ways Thrivent helps members live generously,” Ziegelbein says. “Two of those ways are Thrivent Action Teams and Choice Dollars.” Thrivent Action Teams meet an immediate community need and are led by Thrivent members who have identified that need. All benefit members are eligible to lead two of these action teams per calendar year. In 2014, members used $183,000 to give back to the central Missouri region. In addition, eligible Thrivent Financial members can recommend where Thrivent distributes a portion of its charitable outreach funds through Choice Dollars. More than $400,000 was given to the central Missouri region in 2014 through this giving method. As one of four Thrivent Financial representatives in Jefferson City, Ziegelbein leads by example. Currently he is a Thrivent Builds Congregation Champion, for which he coordinates volunteers to work on Thriventsponsored River City Habitat for Humanity Jefferson City Magazine | 85

“If I help enough members reach their goals, then in time, I will reach my own. For me, this is more than a job; it is my mission.” — Adam Ziegelbein. houses. In 2014, Thrivent Builds gave approximately $60,000 to $70,000 to charities in central Missouri and this year is building its 10th Habitat house in Jefferson City. The natural progression from Marine to financial assistant coincides with Ziegelbein’s ability to tackle challenges that come his way. He finds that drawing upon a strong foundation provided by Marine Corps training and his Christian faith ingrained by his family keep him grounded and focused. He combines his passion for motivating people to reach their goals with his desire to ensure families are financially protected. Not a day goes by that he isn’t thankful for his faith-based, purpose-filled career, one that gives him an opportunity to nurture and help strengthen the community he and his family call home. “If I help enough members reach their goals, then in time, I will reach my own,” Ziegelbein says. “For me, this is more than a job; it is my mission.” JC

Accomplishment that makes you most proud: I have had many accomplishments in my profession, but the thing I am the most proud of is being Dad. Coming home to my girls and watching them grow up and learn absolutely makes my day.

Riding as a Reason Jim Rosenberg, with the American Legion Riders, uses his love of motorcycles to connect with and support veterans.

Bikers often get a bad rap. This especially rings true when bikers are lumped with the fictional dramas on TV, which include big guns, loud bikes and lethal men outfitted in leather. Although those shows get big ratings, they also misrepresent a unique troupe of bikers whose sole mission is to help others. The American Legion Riders is made up of local motorcycle enthusiasts with a mission to help veterans in our community. To be a member you must be a veteran, family member and own a legal motorcycle. The Legion Riders local charter in Jefferson City is the largest group in Missouri with 114 members, but there are more than 800 Legion Riders across the state dedicated to the cause. “Everything we do, we do for the veterans,” says Jim Rosenberg, who is a Legion Riders member and holds several leadership positions at the local and statewide level of American Legion. “I do serve in a lot of different roles, which takes a lot of my time, but I do it all for the veterans and the look in their eyes when I help them.” The Legion Riders visit veterans in local nursing homes and hospitals, fundraise year-round to help with expenses for veterans in need and are a part of the big events that honor veterans such as the annual Honor Flights. The Legion Riders participate in every Honor Flight by greeting the bus in Kingdom City, Missouri, with hundreds of motorcycles and riding with them into Columbia. It is something that touches Rosenberg every time he rides. “I’ve never talked to a veteran on one of those Honor Flights when they haven’t cried and been so thankful,” Rosenberg says. “We owe veterans such a debt of gratitude, more than we can ever repay.” Veterans have a special place in Rosenberg’s heart. He grew up as an Army brat having started kindergarten in Germany and finished high school in Michigan. His father was a four-time Vietnam veteran and eventually died from the effects of Agent Orange. Rosenberg came to Missouri when he joined the Army and then stayed put the past 25 Jefferson City Magazine | 91

years while driving trucks and raising his family. His dedication to helping others has rubbed off on his family as well. His wife is an Auxiliary Legion member and Legion Rider, and his son is active in the Sons of American Legion. Others have noticed all of this time spent helping veterans through the Legion Riders and his multiple leadership roles within the American Legion. Rosenberg received the Rider of the Year for 2014, which is a top award given to a Legion Rider who has contributed the most in a given year to American Legion activities. He was presented the award this past March at the American Legion Post 5 in Jefferson City. “It’s humbling to get this award because I don’t think I’m more deserving than someone else,” Rosenberg says. “I don’t do it for the recognition. I do it all for the veterans.” It’s exactly that humble spirit and the steadfast behind-thescenes work that make Rosenberg a natural leader. As state ride captain, he is currently planning a three-day ride June 26 to 28, covering 850 miles that starts at Post 21 in Independence, Missouri, and ends at Post 5 in Jefferson City. The proceeds from this legacy ride will fund scholarships for children of fallen heroes from 9/11. Coordinating rides with other chapters around the state is one of Rosenberg’s favorite roles. “We are all brothers and sisters,” he says. “It’s nice to be somewhere and get to know other people who have been through the same things you’ve been through.” Rosenberg notes the importance of veterans plugging into a community of other veterans so their voices can be heard. He strongly recommends joining a local American Legion where you can find a group with shared passions, perhaps even an interest in riding the open road to raise money for a great cause. I by no means consider myself highly athletic, but I do like to hike (well, some). And though our area provides several nice places to visit and things to do, I have to say discovering the Pinnacles has been a bit of a game changer for me and my teenaged son. What a cool place. My son was responsible for exposing me to this location nearly two years ago after we’d been in the area for nearly three years. On our first trek together, he had no problem meeting any challenges the terrain had to offer. But appearances do not lie in this case, and I was the one doing more clinging and scrambling. There were some places I found to be quite challenging, and consequently, he found me more than slightly annoying (especially when I lost my sunglasses and made him climb back up to find them). In all honesty, this place far surpassed any expectations I had in such close proximity to Columbia and Jefferson City. It’s beautiful, unusual and quite remote. The topography is more like something you would find in Colorado. It’s surprising how many locals I’ve spoken with still haven’t ventured to the Pinnacles. If you fall into that category, I highly recommend you remedy that in the near future.

River of life Farm Destinations

There are times when you search the Internet for something specific, but you follow link after link and end up with an entirely different perspective from when you first began. That’s how my husband and I found River of Life Farm. We were looking for a honeymoon destination and went from international beaches to the Rocky Mountains to tree house cabins and ended up back in southern Missouri. ROLF is secluded, yet there are plenty of activities to fill the days, and we felt it was the perfect spot to venture. On 350 private acres and a short drive to Mark Twain National Forrest, we were overwhelmed with hiking opportunities. You also don’t have to go far from your cabin to find beautiful views such as those at Inspiration Point. ROLF has plenty of trails for all levels of hiking experience. And if hiking isn’t your thing, there are other fantastic activities. The area boasts some of the finest catch-and-release trout fishing and offers guided fishing tours. We were lucky enough to have the whole river to ourselves on our float trip down the North Fork of the White River and were interrupted only by local wild life. We also took a day to tour some of the old Grist Mills in the area and enjoyed taking in the history. From bird watching to star gazing to relaxing and enjoying, ROLF is a great Missouri destination. Jacob’s cave Destinations

Situated between Versailles and Gravois Mills, Jacob’s Cave was a scenic hour-long drive from Jefferson City. My daughter and I were looking for a fun afternoon outing, and it ended up being just that and more. From the moment we stepped through the door of the gift shop loaded with geodes and handmade jewelry, our guide, Kola, was welcoming and immediately engaged us. Our moods were set to go exploring. This one-mile tour took about an hour, and time never lagged. We were introduced to a variety of natural wonders including stalagmites and stalactites and saw evidence of six ice ages and three earthquakes along the way. We learned that Jacob’s Cave was named after a miner who, on first discovery, crawled a half mile and wrote, “Jacob Craycraft, the man who discovered this cave, 1875 August 9th.” His signature remains at the original entrance, where the tour turns around. Kola engaged both adults and children with wonderful stories that mixed folklore with scientific facts. “Cave kisses” was what she termed condensation that dripped on our foreheads. Because of her description, the children on our tour were suddenly not afraid, and we all found ourselves waiting for more unexpected plops to the head. Jacob’s Cave is owned by Frank J. Hurley, who bought it and the surrounding property 50 years ago. It is the largest cave in the Lake of the Ozarks area and the only one that is completely wheelchair and stroller accessible.

animal swap This event on the Jacob’s Cave property is being held June 4 to 7 and is attended by thousands of visitors. Vendors from all parts of the country come to swap and sell items, including small animals, antiques, flowers and plants, furniture, a variety of handmade objects and more. Animal Swaps are held several times throughout the year.

Rise and Shine: 6 Master Steps to Get Moving

nal motivatio

P

Pamela Gibbs Hunter, formerly of Jefferson City, recently released her first book, Rise and Shine: 6 Master Steps to Get Moving. The book is a personal account of her journey to live an authentic existence. “I’ve always been a woman with many dreams,” Hunter says, “so I found it difficult to focus on just one.” After reviewing her contributions, weaknesses and desires, she came up with what she calls the Radical Gratitude Chart. This six-step chart helped her clarify and prioritize many aspects of her life. Once she found success with it, she wanted to share it with the world and began offering lectures on the subject. An overwhelming response from audiences motivated Hunter to put the information in book format. This easy-to-follow guide shares anecdotes, periodic references to helpful family members, occasional bouts of malaise and a triumphant outcome that can be realized by any who are willing to explore the six steps. But first, Hunter says, “It is essential to get moving!” Hunter also writes a monthly column for the Be Healthy section of Glancer Magazine. She resides in the Chicago area with her husband and two grown sons. She is presently traveling, speaking, writing and, according to the author, still growing. JC

Winging it Advice from 6 local experts on what makes for awesome flavor By suzanne gibson photos by keith borgmeyer Jefferson City Magazine | 109

Domenico's/Italian Restaurant & Lounge “We make our wings fresh to order. They take a little longer to prepare, but it makes it worth the wait. Our wings are not so hot that you can’t taste the chicken.” — Mark Arcobasso, owner Hot wing flavors offered at Domenico’s include: buffalo or Cajun. Sauce recipe: • 1 cup butter (or margarine) • 1 ½ cups hot sauce (Louisiana Hot Sauce, Frank’s Red Hot or your choice) • 3 to 4 pounds of wings

Pictured: Mark Arcobasso, owner 110 | May/June 2015

Prison Brews/Microbrewery & Restaurant “There are no other wings like ours in town. We have the only sweet and spicy sauce that is the perfect blend of sweet and tangy, and we make it in house. Our wings keep our customers coming back.” — Steve Whitner, owner Prison Brews offers its wings two ways, including: sweet and spicy and a house recipe dry rub.

Pictured: Steve Whitner, general manager Jefferson City Magazine | 111

Bandana's/Bar-B-Q “We use select hickory wood and our signature seasoning to slow smoke our wings. We then flash fry each order to give them a crispy texture. Just like all of our delicious meats, our wings are prepared fresh daily and are served straight from the smoker to the table.” — Austin Craddock, owner Bandana’s Bar-B-Q offers its wings three ways: seasoned, sweet and spicy barbecue or buffalo style. Many customers enjoy adding one of Bandana’s five signature barbecue sauces to enhance the flavor even further.

Pictured: Austin Craddox, owner 112 | May/June 2015

ECCO Lounge/Restaurant & Bar “We use our sauce on pork tenderloin and several other dishes as well. Lots of customers want it on the side for dipping. We make sure our wings are plump and juicy wings through a two-step process. Sally puts a very high standard on everything.” — Joe Jaegers, kitchen manager Sauce recipe: • 3 parts honey • 1 part Sriracha Ecco Lounge offers four options on its wings, including: Sriracha and honey, buffalo (medium), teriyaki and Stoopid Hot.

Pictured: Sally Powell, owner, and Joe Jaegers, kitchen manager Jefferson City Magazine | 113

Paddy Malone's/Irish Pub “What makes our wings special is we first start with a quality product; if you don’t have good meaty wings, it doesn’t matter what else you do. Second, we make all of our sauces in house; if a restaurant is using a premade sauce, then there is nothing special about the wings. Third, wings need to be served hot from the fryer, tossed in the sauce and to the table in a matter of a couple of minutes.” — Allen Tatman, owner Paddy Malone’s serves four varieties of wings: traditional buffalo, Guinness barbecue sauce, spicy Asian and spicy peach.

Pictured: Allen Tatman, owner 114 | May/June 2015

J.Pfenny's/Sports Grill & Pub “‘Good people deserve

good wings’ is our motto. We make buffalo wings that everyone loves. All of our sauces are made in house.” — Jessie Chesire, manager Hot wing flavors offered at J. Pfenny’s include: honey barbecue (sweet and spicy), Asian (teriyaki blend), poblano (ginger pepper based, spicy but not overpowering), dry rub (sweetened with a touch of cinnamon and sugar) and Candied Japs ( jap and sweet tai chili sauce).

Damn Good Salad It really is, and it’s really the name. B y C u m a l e n e C a r r o l l | S u b m i t t e d b y J o M cL a u g h l i n Photos by keith borgmeyer As the story goes, this salad recipe grew in popularity when Cumalene Carroll began sharing it with her circle of friends. Next-door-neighbor Jo McLaughlin shared it with several more friends, including her minister’s wife. Jo recalls someone asking for the name of the salad during a luncheon, and the reply was, “I don’t know, but it sure is a damn good one.” Hence, the name began.

Dressing: • 1 small onion, chopped • ¼ cup sugar • ½ teaspoon salt • ½ teaspoon pepper • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard 3 • ¼ cup vinegar 3 • ¼ cup oil

Salad: • 12 ounces mixed lettuce • ½ package Pepperidge Farm stuffing • ¼ pound cooked bacon, crumbled Combine dressing ingredients, shake well and refrigerate at least 1 hour. Whole Lot of Passion Brandon Scott cultivates beauty from his salon chair and inspires other stylists both near and far. BY L a u r e n S a b l e F r e i m a n photos by anthony jinson

B

Brandon Scott, owner of Haute Salon, finds his happy place standing behind a salon chair, scissors or hair color in hand with a head of hair before him. This ideal situation, in Scott’s eyes, is a future masterpiece waiting for him to transform it. “I eat, breathe and sleep for hair,” Scott says. “It’s just what I do.” It’s no surprise that at age 19, Scott made the decision to pursue a career as a hairstylist. He grew up in an artistic family that fostered a love of music and art and also includes several relatives who are hairstylists. “My grandpa was a barber in the Navy,” Scott says. “He gave me my first haircut, and I gave him his last.” This innate passion pushes Scott to immerse himself in his art every day at either his downtown salon, where he works with clients, or traveling the country to train and educate other stylists as a L’Oreal Professional artist. His schedule is taxing, but for Scott, who says he thrives on crazy and hectic, the long days are personally and professionally fulfilling. He typically wakes at 7 a.m. to focus on social media, marketing or budgeting at his home office and then heads to the salon an hour before opening to install or change retail displays, prepare for a new makeup line launch or a variety of other tasks. After working an hour past closing time, his day is complete. During a typical week, he services between 20 and 50 clients. “Haute Salon is my baby,” Scott says. “I pour my soul into it. I am passionate about the work I do behind the chair because I truly love it. I love the art of hairdressing, of curating beauty. Creating beautiful hair is art. It is self-expression, fashion, beauty. It’s my life.” 120 | May/June 2015

This year Scott completed a twoweek immersion course in Phoenix and now spends every Sunday and Monday traveling to cities such as Austin, Texas; Denver; or New York, where he instructs stylists who are new to the L’Oreal Professional brand. “Not only do we inspire and train other people to elevate their craft, but by teaching, I continue to learn new things, and it also elevates my craft as well,” Scott says. He recently returned from an Artist Foundations event in Austin, which brought L’Oreal Professional artists, sales professionals, marketing representatives and others together for three days of inspiration, networking, personal development and education. “We are the biggest global professional beauty company in the world, so I was expecting it to be remarkable, but what I got was mind blowing

and life changing,” Scott says. “It was truly an amazing experience to be around people that all share one passion.” Based on his experiences with L’Oreal Professional, Scott has his eyes on growth within the company. One day he hopes to be included with a handful of artists who travel internationally to places such as Paris and Milan to educate other stylists. It is also his goal to become an artist for Fashion Week, a highly coveted job. Although he says it is something that will take him years to achieve, Scott is committed to proving himself and his skills. Within the next five years, Scott hopes to open an Haute Salon in Columbia. And one day he would like to have an academy for higher learning, a place where stylists can come to continue their educations. His own continuing education with L’Oreal Professional has kept him up to date on the latest trends, techniques and changes, which means his training is current, and his clients are getting the best service possible. “We are a team of passionate hairdressers that together raise the bar for our industry as a whole,” Scott says. Brandon Scott’s favorite hair trends for warmer seasons: Light shag: Believe it or not, the shag is back, and it is even better. This light, wispy style has been seen across the season’s catwalks. The shag cut has gone modern, giving the perfect balance of fashion forward and effortless cool. Pair this look with an icy blonde color.

Balayage: This look is my absolute favorite! It is sun kissed, low maintenance and still in high demand among celebrities and models. This free-handed highlighting method is applied in a sweeping motion. Pair this style with tousled beach waves to get that fresh-offthe-beach look. JC

We’ve all been on guided tours. Some are quite good, but others are, well, something else. Inevitably, you get stuck in the back of the pack and can’t hear. If you can hear, the guide is either new or nervous and doesn’t know what he or she is talking about it, or the guide has done it so many times that he or she is one adjective away from falling asleep. But that’s not the case on this guided tour. If you’re bored, it’s your fault. And though your guide is certainly knowledgeable, this is more about what you’ll do and see than what he has to say. You’ll get to experience the thrill of the catch, all while surrounded by some of the best scenery nature has to offer. “I’m just a local guy who knows how to catch a lot of fish and usually does pretty well with it,” says Chris Gates. Gates has been a guide on fishing tours for six years, the last six with Ozark Sweetwater, a business founded in 2012 in extreme south-central Missouri on the Arkansas border. Accompanied by either Gates or Jeff Trigg, owner and head guide of Sweetwater, you’ll float the crystal clear waters of the North Fork, White, Niangua and Norfork rivers while fly fishing for trout in the spring and smallmouth bass in the summer. The pair takes anglers on about 80 trips a year, with Trigg guiding the majority of those. “With my family and career, I just don’t have as much time to spend with it as Jeff does,” Gates says. “If I guided as much as he did, I’d be single.” Both Gates and Trigg have local roots and live in central Missouri. Gates, 40, is a graduate of Jefferson City High School and earned his degree in psychology from Westminster College. These days, he’s a commercial Realtor for Kolb Properties. Being a guide is his hobby. “I love to fish the North Fork and the White,” he says. “That’s where I spend the majority of my time fishing in Missouri. They’re rivers I love because you have wild rainbows. They don’t stock any in the river. They do stock brown trout, but they don’t stock rainbows.”

The North Fork, which is a tributary of the White River, has approximately 13 miles of officially designated trout water extending from Norfolk Lake upstream to Rainbow Springs. One of the largest springs in Missouri, Rainbow pumps nearly 140,000 gallons a day into the White River and, aided by smaller springs along the way, provides an optimal habitat for trout. “It’s the best experience there is in Missouri, in my opinion,” says Gates, who’s called a specialist on the North Fork on the company’s website, ozarksweetwater.com. The site says he will “employ every technique necessary to put fish in the boat.” Although he’s fished all over the country, including Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and Alaska, he was a late arrival to the fly-fishing party, taking it up at age 26. “I cut my teeth down at Bennett and Montauk and the different trout parks around Missouri,” he says. “I fell in love with it.” His passion can now be found on the river, where he directs anglers to the water’s hot spots. “We take all different kinds of folks,” Gates says. “Most of them are novice to intermediate fishermen. If you’re an expert, you may not feel the need for a guide. This is for people who love the sport but can only get out a few days a year, and when they do get out, they want to have a quality experience.” All the rods, reels and tackle you’ll need are provided on the tours, and the flies are custom tied specifically for those rivers. The trips, which last most of the day, are catch and release and include lunch on the river. The majority of the fishing is from the boat, but they do occasionally strap on waders and get in the water. “Most novice and intermediate anglers can catch fish easier from the boat,” Gates says. “You have a mechanical advantage because you’re sitting on top of the water. Plus, you’re floating the speed of the current, so it’s easier to give the proper presentation that the fish want to see.” These trips can be instant memory makers. Last year, a father-son venture turned into Dad catching the biggest trout of his life, Jefferson City Magazine | 131

and the family had an oil painting done as a Christmas present to commemorate the moment. “What I enjoy most about taking people fishing is letting them experience the great rivers in Missouri,” Gates says. “We live in a busy world, and for a few days, people get away and decompress from the hustle and bustle of life. Also, when most folks think of trout fishing in Missouri, they think of trout parks such as Bennett Springs and Montauk. There is nothing wrong with those places, but that’s only the beginning of trout fishing in Missouri.”

“What I enjoy most about taking people fishing is letting them experience the great rivers in Missouri. We live in a busy world, and for a few days, people get away and decompress from the hustle and bustle of life.” — Chris Gates

The guys at Sweetwater are thinking big for next year, including outfitted trips to the Patagonia region of South America and other destinations. “It’s a region in Argentina and Chile that’s similar to what you have out west, like in Montana and Idaho,” Gates says. If those trips are a hit, future adventures might include the Amazon River in a quest to catch peacock bass. Whether it’s a guided tour in Missouri or South America, you won’t be disappointed by what you see or do or with the Sweetwater guide who’s leading your venture. “A lot of guys who are guiding are on the water 200 days a year,” Gates says, “and they know the river well. But they really don’t care; they’re just out there to get your money. But my thing is, I’m doing it because I love it. We’ll go catch a lot of fish and have a lot of fun. Most days in life don’t stand out, but life is about those days that do.” JC

Realtor Beth McGeorge, 2008 Ones to Watch winner, reflects and projects on career and service. B y B e t h M cG e o r g e

I believe we are called to work hard and love abundantly, and the rest seems to work itself out.

“Keep an eye on that girl” was something I heard a lot when the first Ones to Watch issue launched in July 2008. At the time I had been selling real estate for four years, produced $3 million in volume each year and was the youngest president for the Jefferson City Area Board of REALTORS. Married without kids, I volunteered my time mentoring students at Jefferson City High School. Being in the first Ones to Watch group was a huge honor, and I was proud to be recognized among an elite group of peers. Yet, this recognition, as flattering as it was, challenged me to do more. At 25 I had accomplished a few things, and, like most 20-somethings, I had no idea what the future held. But I continued to be excited for the journey. To this day, I am continually blessed by an industry that allows me to work with people. Nearly seven years have passed since the inaugural Ones to Watch issue, and my business has grown beyond what one person can handle. As a result, I recruited longtime friend Jen Colvin back into real estate, and with her expertise and support, we sell more than 100 homes per year. We have also been voted top Realtor in City’s Best for three years in a row. Client happiness is our top priority. When your emphasis is on serving client needs rather than sales statistics, success is fully achieved. We love a closing that ends in handshakes and hugs. Today, I have been married to my wonderful husband for nearly 12 years. We have two awesome sons, and we love spending time together. As my personal life has evolved, so have my goals for community service efforts. Most recently I have become focused on children’s services and other family service needs. I believe we are called to work hard and love abundantly, and the rest seems to work itself out. JC
