PUBLISHER'S LETTER AMERICAN DREAM We are excited to present to you our Man Issue. The common thread throughout the stories in this issue of City Magazine is the accomplishment of “The American Dream.” You will see men who have, through hard work, determination, and initiative, achieved personal success. On page 32, Terry Hart and Skip Langell share their passion for not only classic wooden boats, but their feelings of nostalgia for simpler times when days weren’t so rushed and we enjoyed time with our family and friends. Similar reflections of old-fashioned values are found in the piece on Shannon Block. You know Shannon as the owner of Shannon Block Construction, but on the pages of City Magazine, you'll get to know him as a true artist. The Fisher family, who own and operate Lee’s Fried Chicken and A Catered Affair, shares their success and recognizes the importance of providing their employees with more than job training — they reimburse them for college classes as well. They don’t want them to just be successful employees at Lee’s Fried Chicken; they want them to be successful in life (pg. 102). You will also see some new faces to City Magazine in the City Men section. It was my honor to highlight these men’s successes and accomplishments and make a few new friends along the way. They are all men who have worked to achieve the American Dream, provide for their families, and give back to our community. That brings me to my father, who was born on the 4th of July, and who accomplished the American Dream through hard work, determination, and initiative. His favorite speech describes how he raised his children and how he lives his life. From Charles Swindoll: "The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, a home." The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact that people will act a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that’s our attitude. Life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it. And, so with you, we are in charge of our attitudes. Thanks, Dad, for always being a man of character, and happy birthday!

CHUG 12, then go-karts, then boats, and then planes. Basically, anything with an engine, I love.” Hart bought his current boat from an uncle after it sat unused in the water for three years. The boat has not been restored and still has the original bottom, although some boards have been replaced due to a few dock rashes over the years. While his boat, named Chug by the original owner, is not flawless or a showboat, it works every single time he turns the key, Hart says. “It’s our go-out-to-dinner boat and, just for fun, we still ski our grandkids behind it,” he says. “When we go out and I park it at a dock, people surround it and ask about the boat. They’re always surprised it’s not been restored.” 40 | July/August 2018

While these wooden boats may be a rare sight at the Lake of the Ozarks, both Hart and Langell say there's a misperception that these wooden boats are more work than fiberglass boats, which is not the case. All boats require regular maintenance, but older ones aren’t more expensive to maintain. “I just love old boats. They’re not only gorgeous, but they’re useful,” says Hart. Time spent on the water, especially in one of these stylish boats, is a summer tradition for both of them. Hart hopes to spend less time working on the water in the coming days and more time enjoying it at his own pace. When asked if he had any advice for others who might be interested in a classic wooden boat, his advice was simple: “Quit waiting. Just go and get one.”

Carrie Tergin Made in America

HOW DID HE DO IT? He was born in 1902 in Greece, poor, had nothing. Both of his parents died when he was very young. He often talked about how he sold his horse to get enough money to come to this country as a young boy with his uncle. That’s the extent of what I know about my grandfather’s family tree. His name was George — we called him “Popou,” Greek for “grandpa.” From Ellis Island to Illinois to Missouri, he was on his way to Columbia when he saw the Capitol, and he knew this is where he wanted to stay. He lived and worked his entire life within a block of the State Capitol building. (Tergin Apartments stands at the corner of Washington Street and McCarty.) Whether you asked him or not, he always told you he was a proud American through his thick Greek accent. He knew firsthand “if you work hard, you can make something of yourself.” What is work? Hard work? Working hard for your next meal. Trying hard as the first generation to provide for your family. Doing those sometimes dangerous jobs nobody wanted to do: taking care of the boilers, saving

every dime, and eventually starting a business on Madison Street cleaning hats and shining shoes. He talked with a pride in his voice when he talked about his employees, many who also had these struggles. Long after he retired, he remembered them all by name. He then moved to High Street to start a dry cleaning business which transformed into Carrie’s Hallmark in ’76. He would still visit Greece occasionally, but this was home. He lived to almost 97 and always said that he never would’ve made it that long if he hadn’t come to America, and had health treatment that, though we take it for granted, many parts of the world do not have. He wasn’t always treated nicely. He was sometimes called names — that “darn Greek” — but he never let it bother him. He kept a positive attitude. He was nice to others, and it came back to him. He was always 39, Jack Benny’s age. When I would drive him down Missouri Boulevard, he would say he remembered when it was just fields. One of my favorite pictures of my grandfather was of him

with his car in front of the Capitol in July of 1929 — his 27th birthday! He would say America is the “best country on earth.” I’ll proudly add that we live in the “best city on earth” too! How proud he would have been to be the Grandfather of the Mayor! He fiercely and passionately loved this country and often told people how he would handle things if he were president; he even wrote letters of advice to several presidents. The responses he received were taped to his walls, and I remember seeing and reading them as a young girl and thinking that was the norm — just tell the President what you think! So it’s not surprising that now the third generation “carries on” the family business and love of this community and country. God bless America! How did they do it, the generations that came before us, through hardships and challenges that we could never imagine? We are all made and inspired by their stories, and wherever we were made, we’re all #MadeinAmerica! Jefferson City Magazine | 45

Alsager brings with her a great deal of experience in message development, brand consistency, agriculture advocacy, and strategic communications. Alsager received a bachelor’s degree in communications from Truman State University. She and her husband, Matt, live in Jefferson City with their two sons. Graessle graduated from

JILL HANSEN is one of two Zonta Club of Jefferson City Women of Achievement award winners for 2018. Hansen received the honor at the Zonta Club’s Yellow Rose Luncheon, May 15 at Capitol Plaza Hotel. Winners are recognized on the basis of exceptional achievement in their chosen field or as a volunteer working to improve the community. As senior vice president of application development at Central Technology Services, Hansen is integral in the creation and deployment of the bank’s e-commerce platform. She also is involved with a number of other local groups and charitable organizations including the Council for Drug Free Youth, Jefferson City High School’s IT/Business Academy, and many university advisory boards. Wilson earned the award in recognition of her dedication and extraordinary contribution to social work education. Through the awards program, the SSWAO and MAA express pride and appreciation for these individuals and their service to higher education and the profession of social work. These awards are the highest honor bestowed upon the school’s alumni, faculty, and students each year by the School of Social Work and its alumni organization. The St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation awarded 12 scholarships to individuals who are pursuing nursing degrees and other education and training to further their technical, medical or professional abilities in health care. Cody Hearther, of Jefferson City, is the recipient of the 2018 Sister Mary Jean Ryan Lincoln University Nursing Scholarship in the amount of $2,500. This scholarship is awarded each year to a Lincoln University nursing student who exemplifies excellence in education and the core values aligned with the mission of St. Mary’s. It was her exceptional level of care that led to her nomination. Upon receiving the award, Duncan said she was just doing her job, but the family of a recent patient at SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital has a different opinion. One of the patient’s daughters was the one who nominated Duncan for the DAISY Award. In the nomination letter, she states that she has spent a lot of time in hospitals over the years due to her father’s health. She goes on to state the she would place Duncan at the “top of the list” of nurses who have cared for him. Former president Mark Towner and his wife, Susan, will begin their transition into retirement. Missouri Medical Group Gets a Partner Neurology Inc., a Columbia-based company, announced that it will be joining Jefferson City-based Missouri Medical Group with an independent physician partnership. As part of the merger, Neurology Inc. will take on a new name: The Neurology Institute of MMG. Neurology Inc. has been providing neurology care to Columbia and surrounding communities for nearly half a century. The Neurology Institute will continue to treat a wide variety of neurological conditions including multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, movement disorders, epilepsy, neuropathy, neuromuscular disorders, cognitive disorders, stroke, and sleep disorders. The Neurology Institute of MMG will continue to operate at its current location in Columbia.

Jefferson City Fire Station Rebuild The Jefferson City Council unanimously approved a $3 million project to replace Fire Station 2, located at 2400 E. McCarty St. The almost 50-year-old building is starting to have plumbing and HVAC issues along with safety issues for pulling trucks in and out of the driveway, due to the location being below the grade of the roadway. The new building is reported to be double the size of the current one, featuring a larger equipment bay, a new decontamination area, and a training room. The new building will also include a police substation for officers to complete reports.

Drug Epidemics Being Addressed Capital Region Medical Center and St. Mary’s Hospital have begun implementing “best practices” on opioids set by the U.S. Center for Disease Control’s long-term pain management guidelines. Opioid usage growth that began in the late 1990s has led to epidemic levels of overdose deaths. Hospitals have updated their guidelines for prescribing opioids and other medications based on CDC recommendations for best practices.

Stacy Welling, president of Whaley’s Pharmacy, has taken the success of her Whaley’s Mommy & Me — Before, During, & After program and turned her attention to Whaley’s Baby, a new business dedicated to assisting independent pharmacies nationwide. Welling, a Jefferson City native and one of the first “Ones to Watch” in City Magazine 10 years ago, opened Whaley’s Mommy & Me — Before, During & After in Whaley’s West Side Pharmacy after the birth of her first child in 2007. In 2016, after seeing the success of the department in her own pharmacy, Welling created Whaley’s Baby. The mission of Whaley’s Baby is to assist other independent pharmacies in creating a niche market that will attract a younger demographic, create brand loyalty, serve families in their community, and increase profits. Whaley’s Baby participants currently include 18 pharmacies in 13 states from Texas to New York. Jefferson City Public Schools Board of Education approved the first bid package guaranteed maximum price-amendment with Nabholz Construction. Renovations on Jefferson City High School started immediately after school let out. There have also been three previous amendments for bid packages for Capital City High School’s construction. JCPS Director of Facilities Bob Weber said the cost of the work approved by the board for JCHS is $6,971,531, bringing the total approved construction cost to $26,478,580 for both JCHS and CCHS.

SSM Health certified as a TCD Level II STEMI SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital has been designated a Time Critical Diagnosis Level II STEMI Center by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. STEMI is the abbreviation for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, which is a specific type of heart attack.

Rallies for Moral Revival Jefferson City has been experiencing weekly rallies outside of the state capitol since May 14. These rallies have focused on “moral revival,” protesting against U.S. government militarism, economic injustice, unavailable health care, and cuts to education. The Poor People’s Campaign came to Jefferson City to bring attention to issues affecting the poorest populations in Missouri. In addition to being a “moral revival,” the movement intends to be a revival of Martin Luther King Jr.’s Poor People Campaign. Tradition Jefferson City Coca-Cola Bottling Co. champions the true American spirit. by ELI MARCHBANKS photos by KEITH BORGMEYER

Shortly after the end of the Civil War, John Pemberton created a formula that he predicted, to use his own words, “someday will be a national drink.” True to his prognostication, the image of an icecold, fizzing Coca-Cola has earned its place as a staple of American culture right alongside baseball and apple pie. In 1895, about 30 years after Pemberton created the beverage that would forever change the drinking habits of the American populace, a brewer named Jacob F. Moerschel would purchase the C. & L. Wagner Brewery on Dunklin Street in Jefferson City. In time, Moerschel’s two sons would eventually take over the business and, in 1922, acquired a “Bottlers Franchise for Genuine CocaCola.” The company has gone through many changes since that initial purchase in 1895, but it has stayed in the family for almost a half dozen generations. Today, Jefferson City Coca-Cola Bottling Company is led by fifth-generation owner Jake Vogel. Vogel, a former Army Ranger who served four tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, would certainly seem the ideal choice to lead a company whose franchisor has always been a strong supporter of the military. “Coca-Cola has had at least a 75-year partnership with the USO, and it’s our pleasure to commemorate all our men and women in uniform,” says Vogel. One of the company’s trucks, painted in camouflage, is Vogel’s way of providing a constant reminder for the employees and customers alike of those who make tremendous sacrifices in service to our country.

Bill Heberle, human resources and community relations manager, would say Vogel definitely honors the military ethos of “service to others before self” with how he leads the company. While one can visit the company’s website for a list of charitable organizations to which they donate, Heberle says: “We don’t turn anyone away. We don’t look down on anyone unless we’re helping them up.” Whether the company is donating product as refreshments for a local event or making larger monetary contributions, they’re constantly giving back. Vogel will tell you how he tries to instill into the business the values associated with the Ranger motto, sua sponte (“on their own accord” in Latin). The phrase is about how one should always be trying to do the right thing without prompting from someone else. “We are always striving to excel more and more in this,” says Vogel. “It never ends.” Despite the fact that the company name includes a national soda conglomerate, Jefferson City Coca-Cola Bottling Company is still very much a family-owned business with strong roots in the community. While the company is happy to donate to national philanthropies, they do make an effort to focus their efforts on the local arts, schools,

and churches of the community they have called home for more than 130 years. One example came in a sign with changeable letters mounted on the side of a building where local citizens could find out about local community events for that particular week. After maintaining a sign high on the side of a building became something of a safety hazard, the company was more than willing to replace it with a digital billboard that continues to serve the same purpose. The billboard is used to promote nonprofit and charitable community events. “We’re very proud of our billboard,” says Vogel, “and thankful to Jefferson City, MoDOT, and other partners who helped us be one of the first in our area to install such a thing.” “We want to keep our 14-county region well served,” says Heberle. Whether it’s building a ramp at a local VFW or helping the local United Way chapter, the company likes to shower their next-door neighbors with support. Vogel makes it a point to dedicate a portion of the cost per case to local causes. While being charitable has been part of their company culture from the very beginning, Heberle would say it was of particular importance to the company’s previous president, Carl M. would say, “It doesn’t take very long to be kind,” remembers Heberle. While Jake served in the military, Carl served in both the Missouri House of Representatives and the Missouri Senate for many years. The company has gone through many changes, including the discontinuation of their bottling operations in 2001; they’re now strictly a distribution center. Their adaptability is also seen in how they have responded to the public’s current perception of sugary drinks. You won’t find only the famous red Coke can in their building anymore; you’ll find more than one kind of bottled water, Minute Maid juices, energy drinks, high-protein milkshakes, tea, cold coffee drinks, and ginger ale, just to name a few. Terry Armour, the general manager and chief operating officer, explains how they currently have “more than 500 brands . . . among these are 20 that generate more than a billion dollars in annual retail sales for the Coca-Cola system.” Heberle thinks the current trend of people being “calorie conscious” will continue, and so the company will continue to come up with options to meet the changing preferences of their customers. Their efforts to stay attuned to their customers is one of the reasons why Jefferson City Coca-Cola Bottling Company was a top-five finisher in the Market Street Challenge in 2016. The Market Street Challenge is a nationwide competition among Coca-Cola bottlers that measures product availability, customer growth, and expanded retail space, just to name a few judging criteria. 62 | July/August 2018

Despite their national prominence, Jefferson City Coca-Cola Bottling Company remains in spirit a small, family-owned heartland company. Though their building is full of some of the most popular drinks in the country, “Our most important resource is our people,” says Heberle. He talks about how appreciative all the employees are of each other’s efforts to make this business such a fun success. Heberle enjoys giving away cases of soda to his fellow employees so much that staff are always joking about getting their shipments out “before Bill gives all our product away.” Both the strength and generosity that results from the entrepreneurial spirit can be seen in this company. The symbiotic relationship that exists between this business and the community is a fine example of how the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts. With both Mid-Missouri and the Jefferson City Coca-Cola Bottling Company working for the betterment of each other, there is much reason to be optimistic about the future. So, enjoy an ice-cold Coke (or a Minute Maid juice, Gold Peak Tea, etc.) and celebrate.

Born on the Fourth of July Judge Cotton Walker reflects on our city’s namesake, sharing a birthday with our country, and the American spirit as we know it. by THE HONORABLE JUDGE COTTON WALKER photos by KEITH BORGMEYER I was born on the Fourth of July. Early on, I realized I was blessed to share a birthday with America. One of my fondest memories took place in the summer of 1976. It was my 10th birthday, and we traveled with my family to Washington, D.C., where we joined more than a million people on the National Mall for celebration and fireworks. Bicentennial Madness had taken hold of America, and “The Spirit of ’76” was everywhere. Afterward, Newsweek included my family in a bicentennial report entitled, “The Best Birthday.” Fast forward to 2018. As we celebrate our nation on another July 4, there are daily reports of great divisions among us. Thomas Jefferson, our third president, spoke to the fundamental commonalities uniting all Americans despite partisan differences centuries ago. Delivering his inaugural address on March 4, 1801, he said, “Every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle.” The American spirit as we know it was born in those words of Thomas Jefferson. Now, more than 240 years later, as Americans, we hold onto the ideals of unalienable rights, individual 64 | July/August 2018

liberty, and self-determination. We recognize the importance of the words written by Jefferson and others at the inception of the nation and our representative, constitutional democracy. There was clearly genius in the creation of this form of government, with three equal branches, each designed as a check to the other. All Americans recognize these words as a part of the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” Our city’s namesake penned the words in the weeks leading up to July 4, 1776; Jefferson inspired generations with these words. He drafted one of the most beautiful and powerful testaments to liberty and equality in world history. That Declaration of Independence has been called a mission statement for a revolution — and for a new nation. Jefferson was a lawyer, congressman, governor of Virginia, and, ultimately, president. He died in Virginia on July 4, 1826 — the 50th anniversary of the

Interestingly, in the moments before he passed, John Adams spoke his last words, eternally true if not in the literal sense in which he meant them: "Thomas Jefferson survives." Thomas Jefferson survives today in the American spirit shown in our city, the City of Jefferson. Jefferson City was incorporated in 1825, and the general assembly moved here in 1826, the same year our city’s namesake passed away. Like Jefferson, I, too, chose to be a lawyer and chose a life of public service. Unlike Jefferson, who served in the legislative and executive branches, I chose to serve our country in the judicial branch. Since first becoming a judge in 1994, I’ve been committed to the independence of our courts. Daily, I

strive to embody the American spirit beyond service on the bench by staying intentionally connected to my community, working for justice, and collaborating with our citizens to help ensure safe and healthy communities for those in Cole County. Jefferson City families also reflect that same American spirit. Every day, nearly 200 years after Jefferson’s death, we work hard, help our neighbors, and give back to our community. Every year, we carry on traditions of gathering as a family, enjoying the outdoors, watching fireworks by our beautiful state capitol (and by shooting our own fireworks!), and celebrating the freedom we share together as a country. Just as the cover of that 1976 Newsweek states, this is “Our America.” It truly is “The Best Birthday.” Happy Fourth of July, Jefferson City.

After graduating from Jefferson City High School, Walker studied at Indiana University and received his Bachelor of Arts in 1988 with a double major in history and political science. Judge Walker received his JD from MU in 1991. Walker has served on multiple committees with the Office of State Courts Administrator and currently serves as Past President of the Missouri Municipal and Associate Circuit Judges’ Association. He volunteers his time with many local organizations, is active in his church, and coaches youth basketball. He is married to Debra Massengale Walker, and they have two children: Jacquelyn, 19, and Quinn, 15. The entire Walker family is proud to call Jefferson City their hometown.

Construction, might not use the word “artist” to describe himself, but after seeing his magnificent works built out of wood, labor intensive and artistically detailed, it's a fitting title. He’s spent years perfecting his craft, starting as a young boy under the watchful eye of his dad and granddad, both skilled carpenters. He was drawn to the craftsmanship of log cabins from an early age. “My grandma grew up in a log cabin near Wainwright that my great-grandpa built, and I was always intrigued by the craftsmanship in its construction,” says Block. “Not a lot of people know how to do that anymore based

He knew he wanted to stay small so he could provide stellar craftsmanship and superior customer service to his homeowners. It was a strong vision that has paid off. More than 19 years later, he continues to build three to four new homes each year with his hands on every part of the project.

“I love to build things, but mostly I like to make other people’s dream homes come to fruition,” notes Block. “I get a lot of satisfaction by giving that to other people.” When Block first started his business, he also began working on a personal dream. He wanted to build an authentic log cabin like his grandma’s using the same 1800s building process that his great-grandpa used. He started building it from timber on his father-in-law’s farm and, after working on it for years, eventually moved the cabin to a tranquil spot in the Ozarks overlooking a spring-fed creek. become a weekend getaway spot for Block and his son, Evan, who helped build parts of the cabin. In addition to their hunting traditions at the cabin, father and son also put their kayaks on the creek and float miles downriver, even camping on the gravel bars along the way. It was a tradition that grew even bolder in 2015 when the two of them decided to tackle the Missouri River 340 — the world’s longest river race — in a tandem kayak they built out of cedar. It was a labor of love, handcrafting the kayak and completing the rugged race, but they crossed the finish line in 62 hours. The name of their kayak, Carpe Diem, reflected their mission of seizing the day together. “It was an awesome experience to do that with my son. There are some beautiful places on the Missouri River to see from the water,” says Block. “We definitely stood out in our wooden kayak amid all the fiberglass. Now it hangs from the ceiling downstairs.” Block is continuing his woodworking, including working with his son recently to tear down a 150-year-old barn that will be used in a new home Shannon’s building for a customer. He will also be breaking ground soon on a new

home for his own family, which will be a rustic timber frame and log house sitting on 15 acres overlooking the river. Even after building houses every day, the excitement of taking what was and re-imagining it into something new still stirs his artistic spirit. It’s where he gets his inspiration. “I’m hoping to take the wooden kayak and hang it in a prominent spot in our new home, so we can see it every day as a reminder,” says Block. I have two Thomas Hart Benton drawings that were sketches made for the Benton murals at the Capitol, a lamp made from Ford Model T parts, a lightning rod with a horse vane, and a few bottles of bourbon (for medicinal use only). People have been kind to me, and I appreciate it. FAVORITE PLACE TO SPEND AN AFTERNOON: On Sunday afternoons, I like to read and nap on our sun porch. LAST BOOK YOU READ: I have over 4,000 books in my library, so I’ll read two or three books at a time. The last books I finished were “Rough Riders: Theodore Roosevelt, His Cowboy Regiment, and the Immortal Charge Up San Juan Hill” by Mark Gardner and “Nightmare Town” by Dashell Hammett. I like people, and I care! Our citizens have been my loyal customers for more than 40 years. FAVORITE COMFORT FOOD: Chocolate almond ice cream from Central Dairy, although I don’t get it very often. IDEAL VACATION: Charleston, SC or any old, historic city. Gettysburg is my family’s original home; we settled in this area before the American Revolution. There are three Bushman farms on the battlefield today. If I ever move, it will be to Gettysburg. SECRET ASPIRATION: I was an art major in college, and I studied painting and print making in graduate school. I’ve always wanted to paint a large mural.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION: In college, I worked at Herman’s Department Store. This is where I learned how to be a good retailer. The Hermans are some of the finest people I know, and they are my second family. WHAT IS A FUN FACT ABOUT YOU THAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW? I was going to join the U.S. Navy but had three surgeries on my arm. That ended that. In 1986, I was asked to help on the re-commissioning of the battleship Missouri, and the St. Louis navy recruiting office asked for my assistance with a special U.S.S. Missouri Recruit Company. Secretary of State Roy Blunt swore them in on the steps of the capitol, and we sent them off to basic carrying the Missouri flag. I worked with navy recruiting and commissioned our new ships. I de-commissioned the battleship Missouri in 1992, but commissioned the U.S.S. Jefferson City, the U.S.S. Harry S. Truman, the submarine U.S.S. Missouri, and the still to-becommissioned U.S.S. St. Louis. I attended a session at the Navy War College in 1998. In my 32 years working with the Navy, I’ve cruised on over 60 ships, including the last cruise of the battleship Missouri. I now take groups out to visit our fleet and serve as a volunteer with the Employers in Support of the Guard and Reserve, a Department of Defense program with the Missouri National Guard. It’s been an exciting 32 years!

T

he world of fried chicken fast-food — or quick-service, as they call it in the business — was shaped by two men: Lee Cummings and his uncle, Colonel Harland Sanders. When the Colonel sold his chicken chain in 1964, Cummings began developing his own “famous recipe chicken.” That very chicken is now sold in Jefferson City and Columbia by two men, brothers John Fisher and Jim Fisher, along with their wise mother hen, Helen Fisher. The Fishers’ vision for their Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken restaurants is simple: a mom-and-pop mentality set within a franchise organization. “My husband [Gary] was a financial analyst in Kansas City with a big corporation,” says Helen. “He hated corporate life, and he hated city life. So we began looking for something else.”

Gary and Helen Fisher wanted to move to a smaller community, and Helen knew Gary was better suited to run his own business than work in a corporate office. Before long, the Fishers’ search led them to a Dairy Queen franchise opportunity in Missouri. They settled in Columbia and opened their first establishment there in 1970. Through the years, the Fisher family has built, developed, managed, and ultimately sold over a dozen different restaurants. Through Gary’s tedious research, the Fishers became interested in a franchise opportunity with Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken. The Fishers decided to build their first Lee’s Chicken in Jefferson City, opening their doors to our community in 1989. At the time, the Fisher family still lived in Columbia. But daily commutes to Jefferson

City by multiple family members had them packing their bags pretty quickly. “I would leave home at 6 a.m., get to Lee’s at 7 a.m., and then get home at 2 o’clock in the morning!” says Helen. But it wasn’t just convenience that drew the Fishers to the Capital City. “We really just love Jefferson City and its small-town feel,” says Jim Fisher. “It’s family-oriented and the people are just nice. It’s a loyal community, and this city is truly business-friendly and wants local businesses to succeed.” And succeed they have. In addition to the Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken establishments here in Jefferson City and Columbia, Helen’s youngest son, Jason Fisher, owns and operates the family’s Lee’s Chicken in Rolla. The Fishers’ food service business also includes A Catered Affair, a local high-end

She can’t wait to take advantage of the Fishers’ tuition reimbursement program for her continuing education needs. “The Fishers’ morals and character were meant for Jefferson City and what this community is all about,” says Dori. “I’ve come from a corporate background where the owners of businesses are not scrubbing floors with you or cooking chicken. The Fishers are willing to do anything right next to their employees. It’s a level of respect and shows us all that every job in this company is important.” So how do you sustain both a successful company and a successful family dynamic over so many years? The Fishers say open and honest communication is key and admit that they talk to one another about business constantly, even at the family dinner table. “There’s been some hurdles along the way, but we’ve overcome them,” says Jim. “In the end, family is all we have.” One such hurdle was Gary’s death two years ago. Fighting back tears, the Fishers say they are still adjusting to work and life without Gary. “There’s a void now,” says Jim. “And even more responsibility on our shoulders.” “But it has certainly made us all closer,” John adds. “We’re moving forward together.” With new quick-service competitors coming to town each year, the Fisher family says hard work, determination, and sacrifice are what keeps them successful. “Gary and I learned a long time ago that we can’t look at what anybody else is doing,” says Helen. “We just pay attention to what we’re doing and try to do it the best we can.” Jefferson City Magazine | 107

T

wenty-five-year-old attorney and entrepreneur Solomon Brown is at a local coffee shop. He sits with his hands folded on the table in front of him. His suit is tailored, his shoes are leather, his suspenders are black. He wears an Oxford shirt tailored and sewn to his measurements. He pauses in our discussion to add up the cost of a tailored shirt versus off-the-rack. “So, you can by a shirt for $150 and replace the cuffs and collar two or three times,” he says. “You have a quality shirt that lasts, and you’ll pay less than you would over time for shirts off the rack.” Brown has an undergraduate degree from Washington University and a JD from the NYU School of Law. But today he is talking to me about community, tradition, and craftsmanship. The latter is how we got on the topic of tailored shirts. His suit jacket is left in the car (a black BMW), and his suspenders are an anomaly among the shorts and T-shirts of the predinner crowd in the mellow din of the coffee shop. If the digital age is about speed, quantity, and ephemera, Brown focuses on quality, durability, and ageless style. Making something that lasts matters to him. Aside from his legal work, Brown designs and sells high-end leather goods via his label, Solomon Chancellor. His pieces range from a leather notebook for $17 to a weekender duffel bag for $895. you’ll find a minimalist design with brief descriptions of his current product offering. You will also find his products in the hands of models and in the trunk of a white Porsche 911. I want to know: Whose Porsche is in the photo? Who are the models? When I ask, he laughs. “I don’t know whose Porsche it is, but I’ll tell you how all that happened.” To Brown, the photoshoot was the result of luck, but the story he tells is one of initiative — what is often called “making your own luck.” “I was walking through a men’s store in Houston, and the salesperson approached me and complimented one of the bags I was carrying in to show [in hopes the shop might sell the pieces]. He invited me to a fashion shoot because he wanted some of my bags in the photos. I get to the shoot on this rooftop and there are three 911s. So, I was able to take all these shots with models in them from all these different angles, and I didn’t have to pay any money for the models or the cars.” Each piece in Brown’s collection is named after a figure from the U Street corridor in Washington, D.C. When D.C. was still segregated, U Street was part of an upscale neighborhood where Brown’s grandfather owned and operated a nightclub and two restaurants. Luminaries like Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and Ella Fitzgerald would frequent his grandfather’s restaurants. And Solomon traces his own entrepreneurial

“My grandfather had a certain code about the way he dressed. So much so that when he passed away, the Washington Post obituary said ‘Mr. Brown was never caught outside without a hat, a necktie, and a jacket.’ I never met my grandfather, but my father said that was how we was, so I developed this love of that kind of style. So I’m 25 years old and have on suspenders.”

If you see Solomon around Jefferson City, he is usually impeccably dressed, often in suspenders and tailored shirts with cutaway collars. This too is part of his grandfather’s legacy. A successful business man, Solomon’s grandfather, affectionately called “Pop Brown” by those who knew him, was also a man who believed in sartorial elegance and simplicity. “My grandfather had a certain code about the way he dressed,” Brown explains. “So much so that when he passed away, the Washington Post obituary said ‘Mr. Brown was never caught outside without a hat, a necktie, and a jacket.’ I never met my grandfather, but my father said that was how we was, so I developed this love of that kind of style. So, I’m 25 years old and have on suspenders.” If you talk to Solomon for any length of time, it becomes clear that he cares about details. Whether he's talking about cars, law, or fashion, he is interested in things that are made well, conscientiously. When he finds something he likes, he wants it be something that lasts. He began to design his own products when a product he loved, a tie, came apart in an encounter with Velcro on an Amtrak from New York to Washington D.C. “I sat on a seat that had Velcro exposed. I had on an open-weave tie, and the fabric stuck to the Velcro. When I pulled back, all the threads came out of my favorite tie.” Living in New York and attending law school at the time, Brown located the company that sold the tie in New York. When he arrived, he discovered that he had in fact found the manufacturer. They still had the fabric and agreed to make him a new tie. After designing the new tie, Solomon purchased more than 20 of them, created a label for them, and began to sell them to law school classmates. He then made the move to leather goods. to fit a Moleskine notebook. When his friends saw the case, they wanted one, so he knew he had a product people wanted. He followed his notebook case with a duffel bag. “It was made out of not-the-world’sgreatest leather, and it wasn’t stitched the best, but people liked it too. So, finally, I said I have to find somebody who can make this and who can make it right.” He invested money to have his designs made with craftsman quality. Since then, he has continued to develop new products and has sold items to people and corporations throughout the world in countries as diverse as Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Belgium, France, Nigeria, Mexico, Brazil, Canada, China, Japan, and the United States. While the Solomon Chancellor brand is built around Pop Brown’s style, it is also built around his ethic. All of the products are Americanmade. “My grandfather believed you were doing a disservice as a business owner if you weren’t hiring the people around you. If you aren’t hiring the people around you, what good are you, right?” With this ethic and spirit, Brown hopes to continue to expand his product line, creating quality leather products that last for generations. n 1920, women outlived men by an average of only one year. Women now outlive men by an average of five years. There is a health gap between American men and women, and part of the reason for this gap is that men don’t value preventive care as much as women. Men are more likely to engage in unhealthy behaviors and less likely to seek care when symptoms first arise and participate in annual physical exams. Men, on average, work in more dangerous occupations, and as a result, men die younger and in greater numbers from heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and many other diseases. Men also face their own unique health issues, such as prostate cancer and benign prostate enlargement. 116 | July/August 2018

Some steps are self-evident, but some men may need help in taking the initiative toward good health. Recognizing that living healthy is a lifelong commitment is an important key to longevity. Nobody is perfect, but the ultimate goal is to have more good habits than bad. Here is a checklist to promote a healthier lifestyle and a longer, healthier life for the modern man: • Stop smoking • Maintain a healthy weight • Exercise daily • Eat a heart healthy diet • Get routine medical care and physical examinations • Perform routine home testicle exams • Keep mentally active • Most importantly, maintain testosterone, Thyroid T3, and vitamin D at optimal levels The aging process leads to low testosterone in men. This process occurs gradually over the years and usually starts in the mid-thirties. Low testosterone in aging men is called andropause, popularly known as male menopause. (That’s a bit of a misnomer, as men are still fertile after andropause.) Not all men become symptomatic with andropause, but symptoms typically appear in the 50s. Low testosterone, low thyroid, and low vitamin D among the male population are at a crisis point. Men with low testosterone feel fatigue, insomnia, and have decreased memory, focus, and concentration. They also will experience decreased libido and sexual performance. Workouts are less productive, and they will begin to lose muscle mass despite

Over their lifetime, men with low testosterone have an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, prostate cancer, arthritis, osteoporosis, fractures, and muscle loss. Thyroid imbalance plays a role in many diseases, including cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, obesity, and diabetes. Vitamin D deficiency is implicated in many different forms of cancer, is necessary for optimal function of the heart, and plays an important role in the immune system. There are three paths when choosing any course of medical treatment. The first is the easiest: do nothing and hope you will feel better. Obviously, this is one of the most common choices, and the results speak for themselves. The second is going the conventional medical route and trying medications only. Pharmaceutical medications tend to work somewhat but can be very expensive and have unwanted side effects. If you do not combine them with changes in your lifestyle, you will not see any meaningful results. The third is to consider

the perspective of preventative medicine by optimizing your hormones with BioTe subcutaneous Dr. Robert Ferris pellet therapy. My Health Journey

Megan Whitehead: At the time of writing this, I am 27 pounds down! I’ve learned a lot about myself on this journey — what I enjoy and what I struggle with. Working with Angela, I learned that my biggest struggle with nutrition is convenience. With my onthe-go lifestyle, it’s much easier for me to grab something out than take the time to make meals at home. Not only was this not allowing for healthy eating habits, it was hurting my wallet as well. This is why I'm so grateful to have Angela behind me. Knowing this about me, she led me to a plan that is not only convenient but also completely customizable and nutritious. While I won’t stay on this specific plan for the rest of my life (which isn’t the point, anyway), this plan has taught me to be more conscientious of portion sizes and nutrition labels. I feel confident in my abilities to move forward with a healthier mindset. As far as exercise, I had a harder time

Recently, my title changed from editor of Jefferson City Magazine to managing editor of Jefferson City Magazine and Columbia Business Times. With this job shift, I'm in our Columbia office nearly every day of the week. This made it difficult to make class times at Studio573, but, with Erin’s guidance, I found a way to stay active that works for me. Since summer began, I have spent a lot of time in my pool (and not just lounging, but actually swimming). When it isn’t dangerously hot out, I go on daily walks for at least a half hour, usually with a friend. When it is dangerously hot out, I walk the treadmill (if available) or do 45 minutes to an hour of stairs, crunches, weights, etc. I can’t tell you how grateful I am to have my coaches supporting me and giving me advice along the way. I know they’ll be able to guide me to another 27

The best advice I can give anyone struggling with an exercise routine is to figure out why. Why do you struggle? Is it time? Is it motivation? Or is it not the right routine?

Time: Everyone is busy, but it doesn’t have to be such a tug of war! Just find a common balance. Maybe go for a walk on your lunch, do a quick video when you get home after work, maybe even go to the park with a friend, kids, pet, or family member.

Motivation: This is one of the most common things I see. I suggest finding what motivates you. Is it a dress size? Maybe just feeling better? Getting off a certain medication? We have so many reasons as to our why, but you have to find the solution to exorcise that! Example: Create weekly goals or a vision board, or find a buddy system or an accountability partner.

Hydration is also super important, as most people don't drink enough water in their day, which can make you think you're hungry when really you're dehydrated. My advice for anyone wanting to lose weight is to become more conscious of nutrition labels and the nutrients that label does or doesn't include. There are many ways to lose weight, and the best way to do so is the one that works with your lifestyle! Whether its following a specific plan, working with someone, or just cutting down portion sizes, you must tap into your desire for change and keep it on the forefront of your mind. You can do it!

The Stone Fence The type of drink that wins battles.

C

ontrary to legend, the concoction we now know as “The Stone Fence” was not devised the night before Ethan Allan, American soldier and trendy furniture-maker, launched his attack on the British pencil-manufacturing capital, Fort Ticonderoga. It was named much later, after a gentleman who dealt in stolen diamonds (hence "stone fence"), immortalized in the Guy Ritchie documentary "Snatch" (2000). My version is called “Bulleit-Tooth Tony,” after a character in the film. It is comprised of any brown liquor in your cabinet and apple cider. For this, I use equal parts Bulleit Bourbon and Strongbow Hard Apple Cider poured over rocks in a tumbler. In keeping with the origin story, however apocryphal, the staunch American bourbon knocks out the sweet acidity of this British cider. You can tinker with the ratios to stage your own battles at home — "who’s going to win this time?” In the spirit of fairness, you should play best of seven.

RYAN HART For the last three years, Ryan has been a manager, busboy, host, bartender, server, janitor, and short-order cook at the Jefferson City Country Club. A spiritual advisor and licensed driver, he enjoys a good bivouac and is quite fond of the peg game at Cracker Barrel. He has never won, but “once got down to the last four,” noting his mother "was real proud.” When he’s not on the clock, Ryan spends most of his time volunteering for online surveys and playing golf. Terry Walker has come home to be the head football coach of his high school team, the Jefferson City Jays, while Chris Hentges is doing likewise with the Helias Crusaders. (Hentges is only coming home to the sidelines, however, as he's continued to teach at Helias.) Walker, 51, is a 1985 graduate of JCHS and Hentges, 52, graduated Helias in 1984, and both have coached at their schools before — Walker for two years as an assistant and Hentges as both an assistant and head coach. Now, both are looking to restore their school’s championship tradition. WHAT'S THE EXCITEMENT LEVEL TO BE BACK AS THE HEAD COACH OF YOUR ALMA MATER? WALKER: It's off the charts. One of the reasons I came back to Jefferson City after I retired from the Air Force is that I wanted to coach at JC, and getting the opportunity to be the head coach is really — and I hate to use the cliché — a dream come true. I love the school, I love the community. I just felt a sense of loyalty to come back and try to put kids in a position to have some of the similar experiences I had. HENTGES: Helias is a special school and place, and it has a special place in my heart. At 52, a lot of guys who are in education and coaching are getting ready to retire and ride off into the sunset. I feel I have more to give. I've been away from it now for three years, but it's not like I was away from the game because I still watched it a lot. I'm not that far removed from the game-planning and all the prep work it takes to prepare your team for Friday nights. But being away from the sidelines, I've missed it. I'm excited and ready to get started. I'd say that's the mood for all the coaches and players. HOW HAS THE GAME CHANGED SINCE YOU WERE IN HIGH SCHOOL — NOT NECESSARILY THE BLOCKING AND TACKLING ASPECT, BUT IN THE CHALLENGE OF BUILDING A TEAM WITH TODAY'S STUDENT–ATHLETES? WALKER: The kids will respond to any challenge you put in front of them. Collectively, parents want you to be tough on their kid . . . until you're tough on their kid. For some of them, it's kind of hard to watch that happen. I've had very few issues with kids [Walker was head coach at Blair Oaks the past three years], but parents are a new dynamic. At the same time, kids are resilient, kids are tough, and my experience is that they need to learn a work ethic and how to face and overcome adversity. HENTGES: It's been my experience that we have just as hardworking kids now as we had back in the day, if not more so, because the offseason is much more important now. We're asking these kids to get up at six in the morning and come in three or four days a week during the winter, spring, and summer. People may say kids aren't what they used to be, but I don't find that to be the case. They're still willing to pay the price.

BOTH PROGRAMS HAVE HIGH STANDARDS TO COMPETE AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL AND BE IN THE HUNT FOR A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO TO BRING BACK THAT LEVEL OF EXCELLENCE? WALKER: I want the kids to be successful on the field, and I firmly believe if we prepare them, that will translate into other aspects of their life. We try to encourage and teach the intangibles: discipline, accountability, service before self, and playing for something greater than yourself. I know if we do those things, the results will take care of themselves. The kids have to believe in what you're trying to do. That starts in the classroom and extends to the weight room and onto the football field. That's part of the process. Kids today are incredibly smart — they can see an individual who doesn’t care about them. I truly believe that kids probably don't care how much we know until they know how much we care.

HENTGES: For us, what we're trying to instill this year is belief: We want them to believe we can be good and believe in doing the hard work that comes along with that. They need to believe in the program, believe in themselves, and believe in what we're doing. I try to stay away from being too judgmental about parents because I think our parents are more involved than they've ever been and they're very supportive of our program. Everyone wants to win and expects to win, and I like that. My hope is that we can return to glory as soon as possible, and I truly believe we can. One of these days, we're going to knock off Webb City [Helias's nemesis in the playoffs through the years] because they’re the gold standard in Class 4. WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR THIS SEASON AND BEYOND? WALKER: Our expectation is that we're going to be excellent in everything we do. We've made some tremendous gains in the weight room, and the kids are working hard academically and will continue to improve in that area. I hate to talk in terms of wins and losses, but there's not a single guy on our coaching staff who expects us to step on the field and lose. We're going to prepare, we're going to play as hard as we possibly can, and we expect to be successful. HENTGES: I think we have the talent and the coaches. My expectation is that the wait won't be very long for us to be back winning district titles and competing for state championships. I don't see this as a four- or five-year rebuild. I've always been confident and optimistic with our guys. I guess that's probably just rubbed off from my dad [Ray, Helias’s football coach for 33 years and winner of two state championships] because that's the way he always felt. We're going to be tested early, but I know our boys are going to respond and give us everything they've got. Jefferson City Magazine | 131

THE BENEFITS Why build a stadium in Jefferson City? The answer is twofold: multiple forms of entertainment and economic development. The stadium will have the potential to host events ranging from Special Olympics to concerts to festivals to (of course) baseball games and camps. What’s even more exciting is the economic growth potential for our city. “[Building a stadium] has been a real economic tool,” says Rich Sauget, president of the Frontier League and owner of the Gateway Grizzlies Frontier League team in Sauget, Illinois. “And the fact that, when we built [the Grizzlies’] stadium on the interchange off of I-255, we were able to bring sewer, water, electric, and other priorities that we would need not only for this ballpark but many other office-type facilities that you can see here now.” Sauget goes on to extol the financial benefits of having three to four thousand people packing into his stadium, including food and beverage providers, printers for marketing and promotion, and more.

Indiana, is around 100,000 people. Those types of cities work very well for our league. I think it’ll be a great addition [to Jefferson City] because, if you do it right, it’s not just a baseball stadium — this is going to be a facility for the entire community to take advantage of.” Steve Gomric, general manager of the Grizzlies, adds, “The Wanted stadium would fit inside of our league and be a desired property in our league both from a geographic point of view and from a community point of view. We’re going to cities like Jefferson City

because that’s the type of community that fits this level of baseball. Not everyone can host a AAA team. Not everyone can host a major league team. We make great relationships with universities, with little leagues, and with communities as a whole that say you can bring your event here. You can host your state championship here. You can have your professional team and amateur baseball here, and that’s what a stadium brings to a community and that’s what a stadium could bring to a Wanted community.”

WHY HERE? This may seem like a pipe dream, but plans just like this have been successful in cities like ours across the Midwest. Frontier League commissioner Bill Lee says: “People make it successful. I have four things I like to look at. One is the market — can the market sustain? Second thing is the facility — can the facility accommodate, is it in a good geographic location that people can access? Three is the ownership — is the team financially strong? And four, and probably the most important part of it, is the day-to-day management.” The big question, then, is whether Jefferson City and The Wanted have these four things. “It’s a nice size market,” says Lee. “In the Frontier League, we have teams in the St. Louis area and Chicago area, places like that that are big cities. But we also have some in some medium sized cities like Marion, Illinois, which is really only 16,000 people, but the market size is bigger. We have Traverse City, Michigan, which is around 20,000 people in the winter months, but becomes around 250,000 with all of the tourists that come in. Evansville, Jefferson City Magazine | 135

A Capital Celebration

C

itizens of the Jefferson City area can certainly be proud of our community’s Fourth of July festival,

presently called Salute to America. The wide

array of festivities all comes together to instill patriotism and pride in America and in our community. Originally called the 4th of July Fireworks Festival, it was established and supported by the Host Lions Club of Jefferson City. According to the Jefferson City Host Lions Club 60th Anniversary Special Newsletter (published May 1985), “Several years ago, the Host Lions Club joined the Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce in sponsoring the 4th of July Fireworks Festival, an exclusive Lions Club event for many years.” This partnership continued until the chamber became the sole organizer in the ’90s. 146 | July/August 2018

During my tenure as president and CEO of the Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce, the board and I had a vision of a larger, more inclusive festival. We challenged staff and supporters with this vision. I’m so proud that they accepted the challenge. Over the years, new exhibits, concerts, and vendors were added, continually expanding the festival. Following the 2003 festival, the Chamber Board announced its recommendation that the event should be assigned to a more inclusive group, independent of the Chamber. To that end, community volunteers began working to form a not-for-profit Fourth of July foundation with the goal of creating a working partnership between the city, county, state, chamber, convention and visitors bureau, and event sponsors. The Salute to America Foundation was created and took over the festival in 2004.

The Fourth of July festival has always had the strong support of our business community. Over the years, hundreds of businesses have not only supported the festival financially, but they’ve also, at times, allowed their staff to work tirelessly alongside other volunteers to ensure success. These dedicated individuals not only provide a commitment of hours of event planning leading up to the festival but also spend their own Fourth of July working within the festival. Jefferson City’s Fourth of July celebration has certainly grown over the years and has continued to be a great source of pride for our community. It is one of the most wellattended celebrations in the state and receives accolades from all over. Salute to America is not only our community’s largest event; it is truly a Capital Celebration!
