Both love to draw, sculpt, sew and paint overpriced tiny furniture for dollhouses that take longer to build than actual houses that humans live in. Together, they are a delightful crafty pair. I only mention it because craftiness clearly skipped my generation. Hobby Lobby makes me break into a cold sweat, I

fear hot glue guns, I do not know my way around a Cricut cutting machine, and I’ve only ever scrapbooked after four glasses of Moscato. So when said creative and artistic daughter started to contemplate her 10th birthday party, she of course created Pinterest boards for possible themes. When I turned ten, we had a party at the local Pizza Hut, and I thought I was pretty

much the coolest person at Fairview Elementary.Thirty years later, I’m discussing fondant icing and burlap banners with someone I gave birth to…sounds about right. This is the backstory to how I ended up in Hobby Lobby last week for one hour and forty-seven minutes debating the virtues of an “Under the Sea” party versus a “Paris” party. Oh, and wait, a “Travel” party. She mentioned that one before I almost burst into tears. The Paris theme was cute and had more decor and gift bag options, including festive nail polish selections, than Under the Sea. But Under the Sea did feature her favorite colors, and she loves fish.

Then I started thinking about what we would decorate with and if gifting individual fish as the goody bag item was feasible. At one point, my hands were full of aquatic life stamps and Eiffel Tower stamps. At that point, I actually laid my head against a metal support pole in the middle of the scrapbooking sticker aisle. A Hobby Lobby worker approached and said, “Ma’am, are you OK?” No, clearly I am not OK because what started as a simple visit to think about invitations turned into a dissertation on party-theme selections, invitations, décor, cupcakes, threetiered cakes, the subtle differences between teal and turquoise and

goody bag contents. Add in some good, old-fashioned drama regarding the guest list and the small worry that no one will RSVP with a “yes” (this could be the only personality trait that proves she is my child), and we had ourselves quite the Hobby Lobby experience. Well, $60 and a few tears (from each of us) later, we purchased stamps consistent with an Under the Sea theme, cardstock and envelopes in just the right hue of blue. We went home and stamped together. She critiqued the slightest smudge while I drank Moscato and willed myself to be a patient crafter, if only for one brief afternoon, for the sake of us. So, here are my notes from the front lines of birthday party planning: • Pick a theme before you sit down with a party planner or wander the aisles of a craft store. • Think about all the aspects of the party from the invites to the very last guest’s departure. My daughter made me a little crazy that day, but the irony was that she was spot on. She was thinking ahead to create the best experience, and I was incapable of thinking past

my fear of stamping. Did I mention that beyond being creative and artistic that girl is super smart? I’m totally putting her in charge of planning my next birthday. Do we think Hobby Lobby has rules against unattended, underage, yet super efficient, party planners? ❖
