THE CURIOUS TOUR PLANNER Number 4 of a Series
tion, there is a 6,000-square-foot gift shop and a large parking lot.
In most cases it would be appropriate to provide arrival information as well as where to park the coach.
“The Curious Tour Planner” is a question and answer column that provides simple answers to simple questions involving bus and group tours. It is patterned after a very successful similar column in our sister publication, National Bus Trader, that has run for about 20 years with more than 200 installments. We will accept reasonably simple technical or operating historical questions on bus and group tours and their operations by letter, fax, e-mail or telephone. Unless otherwise indicated, the simpler questions will be answered by our editor, Larry Plachno, who has owned buses and planned tours for more than 50 years. If our staff is unable to answer them, we will call upon our panel of experts. Names and addresses should be submitted with your questions, but we will withhold names from publication on request. We reserve the right to modify questions to make them more useful to our readers.
Relatively new and increasingly popular is the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky. It is located only a short drive south of Cincinnati, Ohio and then west on I-275. The impressive 70,000-squarefoot museum brings the pages of the Bible to life and has several different features including a petting zoo. Coming soon is a full size replica of Noah’s Ark at a location further south in Kentucky.
Q. Do you know of any religious attractions or shrines in the Midwest that are also near major tourist areas? –– Midwest Tour Planner
Q. What type of information would you suggest be included in a poop sheet or information sheet? –– Group Sales Manager
Q. Is it possible to submit photos for consideration for use on the cover of B US TOURS MAGAZINE? –– Several Readers
A. I can give you a short and partial list of the ones I know about and have visited, but it certainly would not be a complete list. If there is a list available, maybe a reader can point us to it.
A. For those who do not know, a poop sheet (increasingly being called an information sheet today) is data provided by an attraction, lodging or restaurant to tour planners to make it easier to book into their location.
A. Yes. We are continually looking for suitable photos for the cover of B US T OURS MAGAZINE and we welcome submissions. Here are some of the requirements and criteria.
Located in the popular Door County area of Wisconsin and close to Green Bay is the Shrine of our Lady of Good Help in New Franken, Wisconsin. This is the only approved Marian apparition site in the United States. The buildings, grounds and those seeking shelter were spared when the famous Peshtigo Fire devastated the area. Not far from Milwaukee is the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians at Holy Hill in Hubertus, Wisconsin. This shrine is located on 435 acres and is very popular with tours with more than 500,000 visitors each year. Impressive is The Shrine of Christ’s Passion located in St. John’s, Indiana. It is only a few minutes south of heavily-traveled Interstate 80 just east and south of Chicago. The 30-acre site features life-size bronze statues in settings on landscaped gardens. In addi-
A short drive south of the popular Mackinac Island area of Michigan is The National Shrine of The Cross in the Woods in Indian River, Michigan. Just turn off I-75 and take Michigan 68 west a short distance. This is the home of the largest crucifix in the world with a wooden cross and 31-foot bronze figure of Christ. There is a large parking lot across the road and an impressive gift shop.
Years ago this sheet was typically mimeographed and later Xeroxed so it could be mailed. Today, it is more likely to be a Word document or PDF file so it can be attached to an e-mail. While there is no “official” list of information, it should include whatever is appropriate for that particular site. Certainly you would start off with the company or site name and all basic contact information including mailing address, Web site address, contact name, phone number and an e-mail address. Next, I would provide details on what you have available for bus and group tours and what is optionally available. In addition to providing your group rates, you should mention when booking is required, whether a deposit is necessary, when the balance must be paid, and acceptable methods of payment.
If you offer any packages, they should be mentioned along with pricing information. If you do not have packages, it would be nice to list other nearby attractions, restaurants or lodging that cater to bus and group tours (as appropriate) to assist the tour planners in additional planning in the area. You can also list a contact from the local convention and visitor bureau or similar organization. Finally, I would include information on any nearby facility where they can do a wash and dump on the coach and the location of any nearby bus garage or other facility where service might be available. I have sometimes seen driving instructions from the nearest major road or even a simple map showing the location.
The photo should be vertical (portrait) format. When possible, we look for subject matter that reflects one of the key topics that appears in that issue. Part of the problem with cover photos is that we need a lot of quality. Digital photos should be at least 2,700 pixels wide and at least 3,450 pixels high. We look for photos where the main subject is near the center of the photo while both the top and the bottom are relatively plain (sky and grass or pavement) so we can superimpose our masthead, address box and content lines. There is a sheet that explains all of this and has some examples. It is available from the B US T OURS M AGAZINE account executives and editorial staff on request. Answers not credited to other individuals are provided by Larry Plachno, editor.
