There’s a phrase you’ll often hear around Butler’s campus: The Butler Way. It means we’re committed to working hard, helping others, and seeking improvement every day. These values resonate with students of a certain type—those who are not only studious, but also passionate about learning and life. They approach new challenges with enthusiasm because they know they can achieve anything they set their minds to. And they don’t take the easy road because for them, the journey is the fun part. This book is your guide to academics at Butler. Explore all of the paths you can take, and remember that no matter what you set out to accomplish, we’ll help you get there.

Choose your path. Find Yourself.

CHOOSE YOUR

Core courses like First Year Seminar, Global and Historical Studies, and Analytic Reasoning will make you a sharper thinker, a more accomplished writer, and someone who has the ability to make connections between unrelated concepts. And the classes here are so engaging, you’ll be on a want-to-know basis.

Explore your

PASSIONS. Exploratory Studies

Finding the area of study that’s best for you is often a journey in itself. Through Exploratory Studies, you’ll work closely with an advisor to explore the many possibilities that you have at Butler and to discover your strengths before fully immersing yourself in a major.

Annabella Cobos ’22

Major: Marketing Minor: Journalism Coming into Butler as an Exploratory Studies student, Annabella Cobos was determined to choose classes that sparked her interest and helped her find her path. One of these courses was LC103, a specific Exploratory Studies course where she was able to learn more about all of the majors at Butler and to also take time to learn about her own strengths and passions. Throughout her first year of college, Cobos continued to choose classes in subjects that she found interesting, set aside time to talk with her academic

advisor and her professors, and continued to reflect on her interests. At the beginning of her sophomore year, she felt confident in declaring her major and minor. “I have learned so much about myself and what I’d like my future career to look like because of the time I spent in the Exploratory Studies program,” says Cobos. “It’s okay if you don’t know what you want to study right away. Trust yourself. Acknowledge your strengths and talents and take classes that utilize your skills. College is a time to explore who you are and who you want to be.”

EXPLORATORY STUDIES COURSE

In this course, you’ll learn about our 65+ majors by observing classes and discovering your own strengths, values, and interests. You can even participate in job-shadow experiences and interviews to explore where different degrees could take you after college. PERSONALIZED ACADEMIC ADVISING

As an Exploratory Studies student, you’ll have a personal mentor who will get to know you and learn about your interests and personality. They’re happy to meet with you often to help you unlock your passions and build confidence in the path you choose. THE MAJORS FAIR

Each year we hold an open house for students to mingle with representatives from every major at Butler. It’s a fun, laid-back atmosphere where you can learn about your academic options and enjoy conversations with faculty members.

WE LIVE TO College of Communication COLLABORATIVE, INNOVATIVE, EXPERIENTIAL, AND FORWARDTHINKING. This is the College of

Communication (CCOM)—an environment that encourages students to mold their path and find opportunities and experiences vital to their development. Students in our college benefit from a liberal arts foundation paired with experiential opportunities, whether it be in front of or behind the camera, in a clinical setting, as part of a student publication, or in a recording booth. And they are guided by some of the best faculty minds in their fields. As a CCOM student, you’ll learn to think critically, to communicate clearly, and to solve complex problems. Guided by one-on-one relationships with faculty, students graduate as skilled communicators, prepared for careers in an ever-changing field.

Kayla Long ’19

Majors: Critical Communication and Media Studies; Spanish Kayla Long had her first job lined up months before she graduated—as the Marketing Manager for Sanctuary Wealth, a wealth-management firm run by Butler Trustee Jim Dickson ’95. Long says the skills she’s learned at Butler—in the classroom, through internships, student organizations, and extracurricular activities— prepared her thoroughly. Through campus opportunities, Long quickly started applying the knowledge she gained in CCOM to her roles as Secretary of the Black Student Union, Digital Marketing Coordinator for Jordan College of the Arts, and President of Butler’s chapter of the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority—where she produced a documentary film about the experiences of black women at predominantly white institutions. “I love what I learned here,” she says.

INSPIRE, ENGAGE, College of Education IN THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION (COE), we see you—your passions and

ideas, your strengths and opportunities for growth—and we help you integrate these seemingly disparate elements into a meaningful life and career. You’ll work side-by-side with faculty in field-based experiences as you begin to integrate theory into practice. These experiences, along with thought-provoking coursework, will prepare you to lead in a way that is engaging and inspiring. Whether your aspirations lead you into the classroom or to another educational setting, we provide you with the tools and confidence needed to shape how future generations learn, dream, and prosper.

Kylie Mason ’19

Major: Elementary Education Butler seemed like the perfect fit for Kylie Mason. Her sisters studied here and the campus was only a few hours away from home. Despite that, Mason still experienced homesickness. It wasn’t until she met a professor in the College of Education that she truly felt like she had discovered her passion–teaching–and that Butler began to feel like home. When Mason began spending time in the classroom, it only solidified that she’d made the right choice. “At Butler, you’re in the classroom all the time, starting with your very first semester. It makes such a huge difference.” All that experience paid off. After completing student teaching, Mason accepted a third grade position and just wrapped up her first year of teaching. “Butler set me up for success by putting me in the classroom right away. I really appreciate all the preaparation and training.”

NEW MAJOR: YOUTH AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT This new major is for students interested in pursuing youth work, extended education (challenge education/ outdoor education, after school programs, museum education programs), social work, counseling, student affairs, community development, or non-profit work. In addition to 39 hours of professional education coursework, every student selects one of five concentration areas to provide more in-depth knowledge in a specific area of youth or community work. A capstone experience in the senior year, similar to student teaching, includes a full-time internship that aligns with both the major and the area of concentration.

Lacy School of Business

Benefit from one of the best mentoring programs

BY THE TIME THEY GRADUATE,

students in the Lacy School of Business (LSB) have already run their own businesses. Looking for a viable, sustainable, and profitable opportunity, Kelly Schwantes (CEO), Jack Glynn (CMO), and their team introduced “The Pouch,” an environmentally friendly set of bamboo cutlery sold in a washable carrying case. Their plan: sell it on campus first and then throughout the city. It’s all part of the Real Business Experience class, which teaches students how to take educated risks, market themselves, finance a project, and manage a business. In addition to the Real Business Experience, all LSB students complete at least two internships before they graduate. This is learning by doing, not just from a textbook. That’s the Butler Way. As a student in Butler’s Lacy School of Business, you won’t have to wait for a career to start. You’ll graduate with four years of experience.

STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITIES As an LSB student, you can expect to have access to a top-notch learning environment through the new 110,000-square foot business building. It’s home to classrooms and workspaces equipped with the latest technology, a trading room, a cafe, and even a rooftop deck. You’re sure to have a multitude of opportunities for interaction with faculty and members of the business community, so after four years, you’ll graduate a step ahead.

Every Lacy student is assigned a career mentor who stays with them all four years of college, and often beyond. Mentors are experienced, high-level professionals who offer personal, substantive career advice and provide networking opportunities.

CATHERINE PANGAN IS MUCH MORE than

a professor in the Elementary Education program— she is a mentor. “One of my favorite parts about mentoring college students is that ‘wow’ conversation and introducing them to a program, idea, or person they never knew existed before. It creates a ripple effect of learning and impact for everyone.” Our classes are small at Butler. With a studentTO YOUR FUTURE to-faculty ratio of just 11:1, you will absolutely be known by your professors and your fellow students. When it comes to your success, getting personal attention makes a world of difference. By building these close relationships, you’ll take on a new level of responsibility, and you’ll be well connected once you enter the professional world.
