My Writing Goals

I have not taken the ACTs yet because I have been very busy with my school work and have been all caught up with extra curricular activities. I just don't have any time on the weekends because I always have work or I'm hanging out with my friends. I believe as well as I hope that I can do well on the test. My goal is to achieve a twenty–four through a twenty–seven because I believe that would show how inteligente I actually am. If I score anything lower than a twenty, then I will most likely plan on taking the test again to do better on it. My strengths in writing can vary, but I am the best at topic development, specific audience, and sentence structure. I am great when it comes to topic development; I can come up with many different wonderful...show more content...

I want to improve on the areas that I said earlier. I want to improve in my grammar, spelling, and punctuation because it will help me with writing in all of my classes. The big picture is that it will help me with what I do everyday because I read and write every day. My goal by the end of the term is to be able to spell all words correct. Also to expand my vocabulary. Another goal of mine is to upgrade my skill in punctuation. ore importantly, it will help me in my everyday life because I will be reading and writing everyday. Another goal of mine is that I want to become better at these so I can do well on my ACTs. This will help me incollege. I wish to reach a score of twenty–five to feel good about myself. I said before that I need to become better at spelling, and I feel as if I can work on this by just practicing. I will become better in the other two areas just by writing more and more to have it drilled into my mind. I will know the principles of writings because of how many times I will have used them. My goals in this is to receive a grade of an A in this class. I know for sure that I can obtain this grade because I am a smart individual who likes to work

1. To observe and rationalize our motivations and needs for becoming helpers can help us develop competent and practical approaches within the helping profession. I view human struggle as a catalyst for unity, in various degrees because in the face of adversary, we are naturally inclined to confide in others, seeking what we need to rise above certain circumstances. To elevate and uplift is directly connected towards my need to care for others, which has been a driving force behind my decision to enter the helping profession.

Whenever people came to me for advice, I felt as if it was my obligation to provide the right answers, because if I can't, who will? Reflection On My English 101 Experience

Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses. Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in English 101 is the writing triangle. Even before outlining, the topic, purpose, and audience of the

The Importance Of Intellectual Writing

Writing is a skill that will help you succeed, regardless of your future profession. Most students would consider intellectual writing, as a means to pass the requirements that is needed to graduate college, but in fact, writing can lead to a lot of job and career opportunities. Most jobs require intellectual writing for business practice and scheduling appointments, some jobs offer more in terms of writing level. In this case it clarifies that adapting to intellectual writing can serve as a learning experience for either students or job employees to be more open with a team or group. In the sense of communication, it doesn't necessarily mean your going to constantly write essays for major, but it may improve your speech and language.

Not only does English provide an advancement in knowlege, but has created a way for individuals to share their thoughts and feelings through writing. Like any other thing in life there are always obstacles individuals face everyday, for me in my English IV class writing was something that was very challenging. The first challenge writing presented to me was trying to organize all of my thoughts, so that it made sense. The first essay I ever wrote in my English class was a journal entry about a memorable experience, so with that being said I decided I would write about the experience I had while hunting with my Dad. The hunting experience with my dad had many different parts, and one of my biggest challenges I had was organizing my thoughts, so that it flowed correctly. Since I was telling a story within my journal I realized that I was jumping around more then I should have and this became a problem. I learned

Child Protective Services

For 30 years, advocates, program administrators, and politicians have joined to encourage even more reports of suspected child abuse and neglect. Their efforts have been successful, with about three million cases of suspected child abuse having been reported in 1993. Large numbers of endangered children still go unreported, but a serious problem had developed: Upon investigation, as many as 65 percent or the reports now being made are determined to be "unsubstantiated", raising serious civil liberties concerns and placing a huge burden on investigative staffs. Obviously, since the study method involved asking professionals about children they had seen in their offices, it also did not allow Westat to estimate the number of children seen by nonprofessionals, let alone their nonreporting rate. Westat found that professionals failed to report many of the children they saw who had signs of child abuse and neglect. It found that in 1986, 56 percent of apparently abused or neglected children, or about 500,000 children, were not reported to the authorities. This figure, however, seems more alarming than it is: Basically, the more serious the case, the more likely the report. For example, the surveyed professionals reported over 85 percent of the fatal or serious physical abuse cases they saw, 72 percent of the sexual abuse cases, and 60 percent of the moderate physical abuse cases. They only reported 15 percent of the educational neglect cases they saw, 24 percent of the emotional neglect cases, and 25 percent of the moderate physical neglect cases. Unsubstantiated Reports Nationwide, between 60 and 65 percent of all reports are closed after an initial investigation determines that they are "unfounded" or "unsubstantiated" . The existence of this high unfounded rate was reconfirmed by the annual Fifty State Survey of the National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse (NCPCA), which found that in 1993 only about 34 percent of the reports received by child protective agencies were substantiated. Between 1989

Reflective Essay: The Writing Process

Everyone on the planet has a goal set in life, but only a handful attempt to improve to obtain their goal by studying the subject their goal is in. In my English class, English 101 this quarter I was astonished by how much I had progressed as a writer sharpening my writing skills and also learned a lot about writing that I hadn't learned before. In my writing portfolio for this quarter I had to write an autobiography essay, a research essay, and this reflection essay to develop my writing skills better. The writing assignments were fun to do because it challenged me to work on essays of different styles that were new to me. The essay assignments helped me grow as a better writer that gave me the self–confidence and skills to take on the world on my own. During the beginning of the English 101 when we began the writing process: I thought at first that we spent too much time on our essays but I soon realized how important it was spending time on the essays to improve them . The revisions that my teacher and classmates made on my essays were truly helpful for me because it allowed me to better my writing. For every week in the entire course we went over the MLA formatting process, annotating, citing within the essay, and how to make the paper flow better. I had the most troubles in this quarter when I started writing some of my essays for my portfolio because I didn't have a clue how to start them at first. I would also like to improve on incorporating clear topic sentences and concluding sentences, connecting my paragraphs ideas back to my thesis. This struggle is based on last years' experience with writing essays. This struggle can be improved upon by concentrating on what exactly my thesis is stating and building my sentences to relate and explain the thesis further. Improving on this will allow my writing ability to increase and help me become a more successful writer. When composing an essay, or journal entry, or just plain writing, I struggle as a writer with avoiding awkward or wordy phases in my written work. This struggle is yet again based on last year's experience and feedback from my English class. Improvement with this struggle can be made by the following strategies: reading over my paper more carefully, avoiding the use of words that sound intelligent but don't flow with the paper, and editing my paper with peers. Recognizing this struggle and following these strategies would improve my writing. The Importance of Reading and Writing

The Importance of Reading and Writing Reading and writing are both important; you can't have one without the other. They are skills that are increased constantly due to little things that most times are not noticed. Whether it is from a book to a poem, there will always be a way that it helps out your school performance. Reading and writing in general only helps absorb information, and enhance leisure or school related writing tasks. It has also made life itself so much easier because reading and writing are so beneficial for school and for life. How much you read and write today, will somehow affect your future job, family, position, or even your salary. Despite the fact that most people feel that reading is a leisure...show more content...

So writing itself is a form of art, I'd say because it has to appeal to the reader, you won't be writing something to put it on shelves only or for your literature teacher to read, it's for the people so they can get enlightened. Reading comes as the second commandment, you write first and then you read, and the more you read what you write, the more you get better in writing. Reading helps in mental development and is known to stimulate the muscles of the eyes and it is also an activity that involves greater levels of concentration and adds to the conversational skills of the reader. The habit of reading also helps readers to convert new words and phrases that they come across in everyday conversations. It helps us to stay in–touch with contemporary writers as well as those from the early times and makes us sensitive to global issues. Reading develops a person's creativity. Unlike movies where everything is determined by the producer, writer and director, books allow students to create in their minds how a particular character looks like or imagine how a scene plays out. In conclusion, writing and reading can't be created in vain, there was a fine good reason behind it and of course it was to help the humanity acknowledge life

How My Writing Has Improved

After this semester of English 102, at Bristol Community College I feel that I have gained the skill to articulate what I want to convey to the reader in many ways. I don't just look at grammatical error, but instead I look for ways to make my sentences more effective and concise. Nevertheless, I hope that this strategy will continue to help me improve my writing even further on in the future. My strong points as a reader have also definitely improved after reading the poems and stories we experienced this semester. Writing has been an important form of expression for me. I find myself to be very soft spoken and speaking verbally is usually difficult for me because I can't always seem to find the right words to say. I feel that I am more expressive and have more control over what I want to say. While this semester progressed toward its end, I have learned new writing skills and gradually learned how to engage with audiences. This skill was very useful in meeting my course goals in English 102. I believe that I have grown at organization and careful stream my thoughts as well. Before I would just begin writing my papers without any plans or organization, along with no definite idea of where I would be going with the assignments, but throughout this course I've learned that you should base your paper around your thesis statement. Another skill I took from this class was to value my classmate's responses, from their reactions made me much more aware that my main ideas

My Experience With Writing Arguments

I am unaware of any writing arguments. The only thing I can really think of is writing a research paper with the intent to change people's minds on a certain subject. I remember researching for weeks in the library, looking through magazine after magazine. I had searched for enough information to write a ten–page paper. The writing process of the paper took several weeks but when I had finished, all the hard work was worth the effort. I learned many things from that course such as that you need to search for all the information you can because it is better to have too much information than not enough. Also that course taught me many things about making references to the authors of the articles I used for my paper. I remember writing out note card after note card and keeping all the necessary information about each book or magazine. That course taught me to become a better writer and to respect how much detail really goes into a research paper like I had written. Other than that, I have not

It is very sad to see a friend or relative suffering or in need, especially when they pretend that everything is all right. It is a delicate situation when approaching someone in this predicament, as often a person's pride stands in the way of reaching out for comfort. How to offer your help to an independent friend or relative in this position requires a bit of clever manipulation and a not–so– obvious plan in order to help.

If the problem at hand is a financial matter, the first response would be to offer them a loan. On the other hand, most people would be embarrassed to admit to this, and will perhaps be offended at the offer. However, instead of outright offering them money, trading a service in return for payment would not seem as...show more content... Friends or relatives who have children may experience times when they cannot afford to give them the luxuries of toys, games or name brand clothing. At the same time, while most children do not understand hard times, these friends or relatives hurt inside because of this. It would probably be insulting to them if you bought a bag of toys, a new wardrobe for the kids or a slew of games and delivered these items in order to help. Overall, there is a way to present such items in a fashion that will not seem like charity. While honesty is the best policy, lending a helping hand when we are in a position to do so often takes precedence. Telling our life long friend or family member that our children received clothing as a gift, but it did not fit, or perhaps received a duplicate toy or game and offering it to their children is a way to help in times of despair.

Many times when family or friends decide to meet or get together to go out for dinner, drinks, or even to a movie, we take for granite the expense of these excursions and expect that everyone can participate. On the contrary, when a friend or relative bows out, the reason why they decline becomes obvious. Here again, little white lies come in to play, and compassion takes over. Friendship Essay: Helping a Friend in Need

Prior to completing Skip Downing's "On Course Self Assessment," I was starting to realize one of my most sabotaging behaviors. I find it incredibly difficult to say a three–word phrase. When it comes to assisting others, I have no problem lending a helping hand, but I cannot tell anyone that "I need help." In writing this paper I hope to recognize the roots of my problem and adopt a plan to aid me in overcoming this negative behavior. After I took the self–assessment and received a low score in the area of interdependence, I began considering options for overcoming my hesitation so that I may become a successful student. We cannot know everything, and we can all benefit from mutual helping relationships. I may need someone to explain something discussed in Psychology class today and that person may need the favor returned for English. Working together and helping others is important in almost every area of life. I do not need to feel ashamed for reaching out first. As a result of doing the assessment, I realized that I seldom request and often reject offers of assistance. A successful student would employ interdependence by actively seeking out mutually supportive relationships to help achieve their goals and dreams, while doing the same for others in return. I chose this topic because I do not want to be a struggling student! Interdependence is a key factor in being successful in college. In order to obtain a degree a college student must do well in all areas of their studies. To accomplish that, he or she must comprehend the subject matter taught and apply what they learn. If a student does not understand something and refuses to ask for help when it is readily available, they are only hurting themselves. Three little words can make all the difference. By asking someone who is more knowledgeable than they may be in a certain area, they could find the missing pieces that lead to total understanding. This will enable them to perform better on my assignments and to keep moving forward towards that college degree. College can be an

Asking For Help Essay

The first step to being successful, no matter what you're trying to succeed, is to recognize your weak points, your strengths, and your limits. I myself know that I have several, and when I say several, I mean several, weak points when it comes to writing papers. The first and most lethal to a student who wishes to be well, is procrastination. I will always put writing a paper off till the last minute. In fact, I'm doing it right now as I'm writing this. I'm already doing what I say I'm not supposed to be doing. You can probably tell that I'm off to a great start. The next on the list of things that will brutally murder a student who wishes to do well in a class are distractions. Of course there is a multitude of things that can distract...show more content...

I didn't really do that in this paper, so you can relax, but in future essays, you had better watch out. You might also want to watch out for a particular mood or feeling in my writings as well. This is because I listen to music whenever I have to write, because I am normally very easily distracted by noises (and shiny objects). The former of these things I overcome by blasting music into my head, because it eliminates all of the external stimuli that can derail my entire writing process. This may sound kind–of contradictory, because I'm being distracted by noise so I put on more noise. The difference is though, that music is more of a background noise to me, while conversation always grabs my attention. Something else that grabs my attention is video; if I ever listen to music if has to be from iTunes and absolutely not from YouTube. If I know that there is something visual that goes along with what I'm hearing, then I am just pulled into watching the video. This is extremely bad for when you're trying to write a paper, especially if you're like me and you have to look at what you're typing as you go along. Something that I can also do to help my writing is to always read what I wrote out loud. When I say out loud, I mean out loud! This will help me catch some of the grammatical errors that anyone can easily make, and I can also make sure that what I am writing makes sense. Something else that can help me

Our Needs and Wants: effects on our inner peace

Life, in general, has not changed over the years; it is only the surroundings and circumstances that have changed. The way we choose to react to those changes, determines the direct effect on the quality of our life. We need to focus on the need of distinguishing, between the ever–increasing responsibilities on our shoulders and other insignificant matters that consume our precious time. Our needs and wants are two distinct entities. Weneed to separate our needs from our wants in order to achieve satisfaction. It is definitely not a simple matter. We need to find an opportunity to coach somewhere, in fact anywhere. Find a young person, a young team, jump in and impart training, like we would if we were coaching at the highest level. We should not be afraid to take small steps. There's something powerful about momentum...no matter how little. Many times, the impossible is simply the untried. When we are immobilised with fear, when each task ahead appears to be a huge one, when we are unable to lift ourselves to face it – at those moments we can break the dilemma by using two simple words: "Do something!" By taking some small steps, the required momentum will begin to come into our life. Most people don't succeed because they are too afraid to even try. As incredible as it sounds, they decide in advance that they are going to fail. Many times, our final goal seems so distant & unachievable that we don't even make an effort. But, once we have made our decision and actually start, it's like we are halfway
