LifeExperience,Education,andVolunteerExperienceTobegin,thedesireIhavetobeadmitted intoBoiseStateUniversity'sonlinegraduatesocialworkprogramisstrong,andthefirebehindmy desirewaslitlongagoIhaven'talwaysknownhowtolabelmydesiredcareerpath,letalonethe correcteducationalpathtotaketoleadmetoalifeofhelpingothers;buthereIamtoday,an optimisticyoungwomanwithafewyearsoflifeexperienceandacollegedegreeundermybelt; readytocommittoagraduateprogramthatwillgivemethetoolsandadvancedknowledge necessarytofollowmydreamofbecomingalicensedsocialworker.Todiveintothemostpersonal reasonastowhyIwishtobeacceptedintoBoiseState'sgraduatesocialworkprogram,I'dliketo startwithmychildhood.Igrewupinatraditional,lovingandembracinghomethathaditsfairshare ofchaos.Myfather,whowillsooncelebratehistenthyearofsobriety,struggledwithalcoholism anddrugaddictionsincelongbeforeIwaseverblessedwithlifeHewaswhatmyfamilywouldcall a'functioningaddict',ashewasasemi–proactivefatherandhusbandwhoalwayshadajob,butnot typicallyformorethanayearatatime,andmostpeoplewhowerenewtomeetinghimhadnoidea hestruggledwithsuchbattles.Myfamilywasputthroughalottosaytheleastandthesamegoes formyparent'smarriage.Asayounggirlwithevenyoungersiblingsandamotherwhowastrying tomaintainhermarriage,familyandcareerwithanaddictforaspouse,Iinherentlytookontherole ofbeingtheheadofthehouseholdwhenmyfatherwasinebriatedandmymotherwasworking.I feltnopressurefrommymothertoaidinhouseholdchores,ensurethatmysiblingsatedinnerand stayoccupiedawayfromourdadwhenhewasdrunkandunabletotendtothem.Mymotherwould actuallypreferthatInothelpmydadtothebathroomorbedwhenhewasincapableofdoingit himselfwithoutgettinghurtalongtheway,asitwas"notadaughter'sjob"ButIcouldn'thelpit,as muchdisappointmentmyhearthadfrombrokenpromisesofsobrietyandemptyapologies,Iknew inmyheartthatifInevergaveuponhim,hewouldnevergiveuponhimself.Now
