In the visual text, Gattaca, directed by Andrew Niccol, we're introduced to a futuristic society where people strive for the best set of genes in hopes of creating a 'perfect' society. The main character, Vincent, is classified as an invalid. He overcomes many obstacles in hopes of fulfilling his dream of going to space. In doing so, his actions helped us understand the theme that striving for the best sets of genes risks suppressing individuality and success. Aspects of this include him proving that 'perfect' genes doesn't guarantee success, not conforming to maintain individuality and determination and being One way that Vincent was able to communicate the theme, was through overcoming his disadvantages as an invalid this was shown...show more content...

Even after being discriminated and marginalised from society by his 'low' quality genes, Vincent never gave in. SInce the genetically engineered individuals form the society's elite, parents wish to select the best versions of their genes to create the 'perfect' offspring, this suppresses individuality as the society still ends up conformed to the rules of a striving organisation towards a 'perfect' society. This would result in no individuality within a society which would mean that the society could never evolve as there will be no one to oppose or notice the flaws in this 'perfect' society. Vincent becomes the exception when he didn't accept being treated as an inferior the way Irene had. She accepted the fact that she would never accomplish her dream of space travel and so, she accepted her role in Gattaca. This is shown through her obedience to follow any order given to her by the director. VIncent's achievements showed that invalids can be just as good as valids. He showed Irene that he was here "to show that it's possible" for those who are marginalised to be just as good. These accomplishments were reached only because Vincent didn't conform to the society by taking risks that involved being suspected as a murderer and as an infiltrated invalid. Both of which would result in severe punishments. In addition, when he won the final

Andrew Niccol's Gattaca portrays a discriminatory society in which status and quality of life is determined solely by a DNA profile. However, it is against this oppressive regime that Vincent Freeman shines, as Niccol conveys the importance of maintaining individuality В– in those qualities which deem his protagonist unique. Throughout the film Niccol criticises those who conform and contribute to this, while simultaneously he praises those valids who do rebel in order to emphasise how pivotal it is that the human race does not succumb to lead the existence portrayed by this "not to distant future" society.

From an early point in the film, Niccol depicts the environment of the Gattaca corporation. It is a sterile and artificial world...show more content...

Here, this juxtaposition As a child, Anton is seen to possess much arrogance, stating coldly to Vincent "How many astronauts are there anywayВ…I bet I could be one, if I wanted" and taunting him with comments such as "come on you coward" during their frequent swimming challenges. Hence Anton can be considered as one who believes that success will be delivered to him solely because he possesses a "far cleaner profile". Yet, here Niccol reveals Anton's fault in this assumption, as ironically he is in adulthood he is observed working as a "law–enforcement" officer in a position less respected than Vincent who is a highly esteemed "First–class Navigator". Hence Here, this is perhaps one of the most significant indicators of Niccol's underlying message to hold onto one's individuality, as Vincent is seen to succeed not due to his superior genetics, but to his persistence and dedication.

Furthermore, Niccol praises the numerous individuals, besides Vincent, who act to rebel against the prejudiced society in which they live. Take Irene, who initially appears equally preoccupied with science as other valids as she has Vincent "sequenced". In this scene, Niccol emphasises the shallow ideals on which this society bases love, as the woman alongside Irene casually remarks "I kissed him five minutes agoВ…a real good one" However, following Irene's discovery of Vincent's

"We were wondering if it's good to leave some things to chance." In the world of Gattaca, is this a wise course of action?

Gattaca is a science–fiction thriller movie, directed by Andrew Niccol. It presents a story of the future prospect of genetic engineering and how it will affect human society. Gattaca gives one perspective of how the future of discrimination is no longer determined by social status or the colour of skin because the discrimination is now down to a science, Vincent: "I belonged to a new underclass, no longer determined by social status or the colour of your skin. No, we now have discrimination down to a science." The better the genes in your body are the better job you will get. In the future world, like presented...show more content... It is one of the things why it is important to leave nothing programmed.

It is better to leave some of a child's abilities unprogrammed. It because natural conception produces humans that have spirits, emotions, and dreams. The scientist in Gattaca would think that leaving the child's abilities to chance is something stupid and they would not agree of that. However, the director shows clearly that is wiser to remain human. In this movie, he shows some examples such as Vincent beats Anton at swimming, Irene falls in love with Vincent even when she discovers that he is not who he says he is. Irene doesn't care who Vincent actually is, she's already fallen in love with Vincent's personality. Summary

Exactly five seconds after he came into the world, Vincent Freeman was already considered to be a looser. His first genetic test revealed high probabilities of hyperactivity, sight troubles and serious heart diseases, a life expectancy of 30 years and 2 months and quite low intellectual faculties. At that time, the artificial insemination of test tube babies selected according to their genetic potential had become for many people "the natural way of making children". But Vincent's parents had preferred to let the other nature take its course. Of course they regretted it, and for their next child they went to see a geneticist. A perfect son has been born to them, a son...show more content...

The police went through the whole company with a fine–tooth comb and found one of Vincent's eyelashes. After a fast analysis, they found out that it belonged to a man who had worked long ago for the company as a cleaner but who had disappeared years before. The mysterious man was the number one suspect and his picture was everywhere. But no one matched it with the wrong Jerome. No one but the lieutenant who was no other than his brother, Anton. For him, that was hard to believe. This brother who had always been inferior to him was then far above in the hierarchy and had become a murderer. At first, he tried to protect him. Totally puzzled, he wanted to understand how Vincent managed to joinGattaca before he is arrested, so he did everything in order that the inspector who was in charge of the case could not find him. Irene is an attractive and intelligent woman, also employee at Gattaca. She has got the same dream as Vincent but she presents an inadmissible risk of heart failure which stops her from going into space. She grew very fond of Vincent but she thought he would not be interested since she was not as perfect as him. Of course, Vincent does not have the same opinion as her or anybody else about shortcomings. He

Section 1: Question 1 – The society of Gattaca works to repress rather than to enhance the potential of human beings. Discuss.

In a society where genetic superiority and engineering to create the 'perfect' person is a priority over all else, it would be a normal assumption that society would be a better place and people would be much happier, but in Gattaca it is quite the opposite. From the beginning of the film we see haunting images of the uniformity and soulless behaviour of the Gattaca employees. All people regardless of race, gender, class or age should have an equal opportunity to strive to their full potential if desired, but the society of Gattaca represses the potential of many capable people simply because they are...show more content...

Jerome is lucky enough to have superior genes, thus giving him the opportunity to achieve his full potential. Throughout his whole life he was expected to succeed at everything he was faced with, and being an Olympic swimmer, he was expected to win but "for the genetically superior, success is easier to attain. But is by no means guaranteed. After all, there is no gene for fate." But what does this prove? Genes don't change personality or fate, they just allocate your future for you in Gattaca.

The society of Gattaca has been destroyed by cruel selfish acts of genoism when if only they could just look past the difference in DNA and accept human nature then Gattaca could come together as a whole. Essay On Gattaca

The movie Gattaca is set in the future, and is a story about a man named Vincent Freeman who dreams of traveling to the stars. In this future, society has developed categories that each person falls in to depending on their genetic makeup. In the film parents have the ability to choose specific genetic composition of their children. Vincent Freeman'sgenetics leave him in the less than favorable category making his dreams of space travel at Gattaca Corporation impossible. As one of the last natural born babies in a sterile and genetically enhanced world, Vincent had poor eyesight, heart problems and was not expected to live past the age of 30. Society has determined that people such as Vincent are in an underclass of humans and are only good for menial jobs simply based on their genotype. Vincent's dreams will not be stifled so he devises a scheme to buy another identity. He finds Jerome Morrow a former athlete with favorable genetics, and a paraplegic as the result of a tragic car accident. As a society, each and every one of us possesses an inner strength that aids us to overcome the impediments in life that we may face. This inner strength is what we call our human spirit.

During his time at Gattaca Niccol again further reminds the audience of his inferiority, to establish the power of the human spirit relative to the extent of hindrances Vincent faces. Lighting is used by Niccol during a scene where Vincent's real identity is threatened to be exposed. Hiding in the corner of the alleyway the shadow cast against Vincent's face again replicate that of prison bars. This again suggests Vincent remains trapped behind bars due to his genetic inferiority. By constantly reminding us Vincent's adversity Niccol heightens the theme regarding the power of the human spirit.

Albeit the adversities Vincent eventually overcomes these sentiments inferiority, and through the strength deemed to him through his human spirit fulfils his aspiration of going into space. It is in the final sequence that Niccol utilises a conjunction of the techniques which exemplify Vincent's evident triumph, a success which his undying determination and human sprit has led him, set within the interior of a space shuttle. Summary of Gattaca

Vincent Freeman was a naturally born child. He was called "invalids" along with others that were born in the same way. The doctors told his parents that he had a 99% chance of dying of a heart disorder when he was about 30 years old.

His parents decided to have a second child through the genetic route. He had what was the best of his parents and he was named after his father В– Anton.

The brothers competed over swimming, but Vincent always lost to Anton В– invalids could not beat valids.

So even people suspected him, he was not going to be in any danger. Vincent met with Irene and fell in love with her. Irene has an excellent DNA, but she had heart problems and would not be allowed to fly any long missions.

When the mission director of Gattaca was murdered, detective Hugo discovered an eyelash of Vincent. But they did not know the person called Jerome that was working here was actually Vincent. This invalid person was their most obvious suspect. Vincent's identity was now in danger of being discovered.

When the case was announced over, the investigator was not satisfied. He went to Jerome's home, tried to find proves that could certify that Jerome had something to do with the murder. He met Eugene who was asked by Vincent to disguise as him. After the investigator left, Vincent went to see him. Vincent found out that the investigator was his brother В– Anton. But at the same time, Anton knew Vincent's true identity.

Gattaca examines science, religion, genetic engineering and ethics.

By opening the movie Gattaca with quotations from Willard Gaylin and Ecclesiastes, director Andrew Niccol invites us to ponder the tension between science and religion with regard to the ethics of genetic engineering. This tension is further sustained through the complex relationship of the main protagonists Vincent and Eugene, who must ultimately conquer their own physical limitations in order to find ``God''.

As the titles run, fingernails, hair threads and skin particles fall to the ground in slow motion, giving way to an image of a young man vigorously scrubbing himself.

Vincent, desperate to conceal his identity from Irene, is nearly run down on a frenetically busy highway, whereas Eugene deliberately steps in front of a car in the hope of bringing about his own death. Both are so preoccupied with their own deficiencies that they almost miss their important ``spiritual'' journey.

In fact, both these men run perilously close to becoming like Anton– robotic and devoid of emotion. It is Anton who provides the real paradox here by ruthlessly investigating his own brother's ``invalidity'' and, in so doing, demonstrates that genetics does not necessarily correlate with one's humanity.

Indeed, it is Irene who, from the outset, seems to be more in touch with the natural world towards which Vincent is striving to return. Note the setting where she lives; rolling surf, pristine white sand, the warm light within in which she is constantly bathed, her disappointment with Vincent's supposed ``perfection'', her fascination with the sunrise, her ability to notice the change in his eyes after he discards his contact lenses when most people can only recognise human differences by a DNA test. Irene's costume and hair are much softer, feminine and distinctively individual when she is away from Gattaca.

Another film with a similar message is one named 'Gattaca'. An old theory based film that wraps itself around the concept of the expected future, contains relevance to identity in majority of its scenes. Vincent, the leading character for this film as he is the only, in 'Gattaca' terms, faith–birth that is introduced. As stated in thefilm introduction, Vincent, unlike many others, knows "there is no gene for fate". Knowing this, he never once doubts his capabilities of making it all the way no matter what it takes, to get what he wants. In both of these films, identity is shown as a main idea and becomes the source of courage to change the path of oneself. Changed the idea of telling everyone what they can and cannot do as well as limit their capabilities, was the main concept of both these productions.

One of the most accurate sources, as tradition for centuries, are books that can also be a relevant relation to this particular topic. One short story book in particular which carries the same reference, is 'Growing up Asian in Australia'. Within this book, there are a series of multiple short stories that all revolve around the same core, 'identity and belonging'. Some stories, such as 'Sticks and Stones and Such–like' tend to amplify another cultures struggles and their expectations compared to the world around them.
