Fenugreek seed extract as the title sounds, is an extract obtained from the seeds of fenugreek plant. Fenugreek is an annual herb with light green leaves, small white flowers and pods containing golden-brown seeds. This crop is native to Southern Europe, the Maditerranean region and western Asia but grown in other areas like China, Africa and India. In a 2014 study, capsules of fenugreek seeds powder were administered to 51 women with painful periods thrice a day for the first 3 days of their periods for 2 consecutive months. These women experienced shorter durations of pain and fewer symptoms between the months. 3

Fenugreek seeds extract contains phytoestrogens, chemical compounds similar to estrogen. Consuming fenugreek has been used to increase breastfeeding mother’s milk, according to registered nurse Cindy Curtis.

In 2014, a study conducted on 25 women who had recently given birth revealed an increase in milk volume in the first weeks after taking three cups of fenugreek tea daily for 2 weeks.

In another study, 600 milligram capsules of fenugreek seeds administered to mothers three times daily for a month led to a 20% increase in breast milk production although there was no significant difference compared to the placebo group.

The German Commission E recommends a daily intake of 6 grams of fenugreek seed extract to improve breast milk production in nursing women.
