TRAINING
Horticulture Training at Belize Botanic Gardens is a 10-week course comprised of mornings in the classroom learning to about various plants, how to identify them, where and when to plant them and after-
noons doing practical training in plant ID, propagation, grafting, pruning, weeding, watering, landscape design –and more. On The Job Training (OJT) is a 12-week course of practical train-
ing which teaches students all of the necessary skills to obtain a job as a gardener. A number of our students have started their own nursery and lawn care businesses so there is opportunity for entrepreneurs.
With the growth of the tourism industry in Belize hotel owners and other businesses are requiring skilled gardeners to help maintain their grounds so this job market is wideopen for the dedicated individual. We have trained both men and women from youths as young as 16 to mature people in their 40’s and 50’s. The main requirement is a love for gardening and the wish to become employed!
What to do? Black Hole Drop Stretch Your Comfort Zone as you rappel down into a jungle sink hole deep in the rainforest. This expedition starts off with a vigorous hike into the foothills of the Maya Mountains. The edge of the Actun Loch Tunich sink hole is over 300 feet above the basin
below and 200 feet above the rain-forest canopy that grows out from the sink hole basin. Actun Loch Tunich sink hole is not actually black but since you can’t see the bottom from the start, this definitely adds an additional element of excitement. Fully Trained Cave Guides provide helmets and safety
equipment as they rig a system of rappelling ropes for your decent to the basin below. The first 10 feet provides the
adrenaline, the next 200 feet features an unforgettable experience and sights to behold, and the final 100 feet plunges you

San Ignacio Town
Burns Avenue is “Main Street” and a good place to begin a tour of the town.
Known locally as “Cayo”, San Ignacio is a unique blend of America’s Old West and tropical backwater with frontierlike wooden shops on narrow streets.
Most days it’s a busy thoroughfare with lots of people walking in the streets. Burns Avenue and the adjacent streets are packed with shops,
must be relatively fit.
hotels and places to eat where hospitable towns people mingle in restaurants, bars and wooden shops. San Ignacio market
Saturday Market Many of our guests take the opportunity to visit the local market.
Saturday (early) is the best time and day to go, as it’s the busiest market day and along with the wide variety of fruits and vegetables offered, there are also plenty of food vendors preparing fresh local fare such as, tacos, tamales, pupusas (right), along with homemade breads, cheeses and yogurts for you to sample. There are also plenty of hand-made crafts and gift items to inspect and a place that sells local medicinal and
cooking herbs. Do all this while sharing a taste treat and mingling amongst
the locals in the festive atmosphere of this bustling market place.
Iguana Conservation Project The Iguana Conservation Project
is located at the San Ignacio Hotel. Here you will have the opportunity to
take a closer look at these descendants of dinosaurs and learn how vital they are to the ecologi-
cal balance of the Macal River ecosystem. This handson tour is both fun and educational and takes about an hour to complete. Located on the highest hill overlooking the town is where to find Cahal Pech, a partially excavated Maya archeological site. There site has a visitors’ center containing artifacts and a reconstructed model of the site.l
