TRAINING
Horticulture Training at Belize Botanic Gardens is a 10-week course comprised of mornings in the classroom learning to about various plants, how to identify them, where and when to plant them and after-
noons doing practical training in plant ID, propagation, grafting, pruning, weeding, watering, landscape design –and more. On The Job Training (OJT) is a 12-week course of practical train-
ing which teaches students all of the necessary skills to obtain a job as a gardener. A number of our students have started their own nursery and lawn care businesses so there is opportunity for entrepreneurs.
With the growth of the tourism industry in Belize hotel owners and other businesses are requiring skilled gardeners to help maintain their grounds so this job market is wideopen for the dedicated individual. We have trained both men and women from youths as young as 16 to mature people in their 40’s and 50’s. The main requirement is a love for gardening and the wish to become employed!

Belize. An impressive 60foot waterfall is part of the Vaca Plateau boasting two large, deep emerald pools filled with spring water perfect for swimming or, for the more adventurous, cliff jumping. The water from the peaks of the Maya Mountains rusher over giant granite rock outcroppings and down the waterfall. The footpath to the falls is a 15-minute hike and involves some difficult climbing down hand hewn stairs to the valley below. Once to the water, you must walk over the large slabs of not-so-flat and sometimes slippery granite to reach the falls. This site is amazing, but only for those who are in moderate physical condition. Rio Frio Cave The massive mouth of the Rio Frio cave is its signature. Belize potentially has the

largest cave system in Central America, with the dome of Rio Frio being the largest in the country as well. Belize has an abundance of limestone rock, hence an abundance of caves. Caves are formed when the relatively soft limestone rock is eroded by water over millennia. Rio Frio Cave is located in the Mountain Pine Ridge area, in Augustine, about five miles past the Douglas de Silva Forest Station. Upon arrival at Rio Frio Cave, visitors can park not too far from the entrance, and a short walk reveals the massive 65-foot arched entrance.

Large boulders, some covered with moss, allow for climbing high up along the side near the wall of the cave, and stepping-stone stairs have also been set to make the hike easier. When inside the cave, the other large entrance (or exit) can also be seen, as the entire cave is less than half-mile long. A river runs through the cave, and in the dry season, it is possible to hike through to the other side. This less traveled path reveals another trail outside the cave, and some smaller caves are accessible from here. Flashlights are always a good idea, but are not necessary, as the cave has
natural light filtering through most of the day, since both entrances are not far from each other.
