DESERT MART

Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder and the auctioneer will settle any disputes as to bids. Terms are cash at the time of purchase or onehalf down and the remaining balance due at the time of delivery. If you so desire, we will care for your purchase for up to 30 days at our risk and our expense. It is our desire to make all deliveries and receive any remaining payments prior to December 22, 2024. Free delivery on the bulls anywhere within the continental United States on total bull purchases of $5,000.

If you bring your own trailer and health certificates can be written sale day, there will be a $125 rebate per bull you haul home. Note: Due to changing health requirements on bulls, please check your state’s health requirements; if there are any questions, contact us so that we may assist you with delivery.

Customer satisfaction is our primary concern. Every effort has been made to ensure complete genetic prepotency and purity. All sale cattle are guaranteed free of known genetic recessives. All coming twos and fall yearlings have been fertility tested and scrotal measured by our veterinarian. All cattle that have horns will be so designated. The same goes for cattle that are polled. Scurred cattle will also be identified. Bulls with scurs do not have real horns and should not sire cattle with horns any more than a smooth polled bull would. All persons attending the sale do so at their own risk. WINTERING ARRANGEMENTS

At buyer’s option, all older bulls will be wintered at a cost of $100/head/month. Since each individual carries the 2-year guarantee, seller assumes full risk.

Finally, a working system that is simple to understand and makes a real-world, comprehensive evaluation of carcass merit.

Here’s How it Works:

1. Add together an individual’s ribeye area, marbling score and total carcass value ($CHB).

DCR: 128

a. This is done best by assigning a whole number value to the decimal values, example: 0.30 ribeye would change to 30.

2. Compare the individual’s added score to the current breed average. Example Lot 3, the ribeye area on Lot 3 (page 10) would now be 62. His marbling is 19 and CHB$ is 144. Adding together 62 + 19 + 144 = 225. Breed average 44 + 13 + 119 = 176.

3. Divide Lot 3’s total score of 225 by the current breed average 176 the result is 225 ÷ 176 = 128 or DCR: 128 . Therefore breed average would be 100% and Lot 3’s huge advantage would be 128%!

REAL CATTLE WORK IN THE REAL WORLD!

All the sale cattle have been raised on native range with no creep feed. After weaning, all bulls are developed on a growth ration and long hay with plenty of exercise and exposure to all of Mother Nature’s elements.

PERFORMANCE RECORDS

Our herd has been enrolled in the American Hereford Association’s TPR Performance Program for over 60 years. We are putting out individual performance information except actual birth weights in the catalog expressed strictly as EPDs. While all the registered cattle have ratio information, the latest research shows that Expected Progeny Differences for young bulls may be as much as nine times more accurate for selections than ratios. Present weights and any additional information requested will be available sale day.

MATERNAL STRENGTH

It has been determined that maternal traits are the most highly valued economic traits in the cattle industry. Milk EPD is the calves’ weaning advantage in pounds expected from a bull’s daughters through milk production. Milk plus growth EPDs indicate the advantage in pounds that the same daughters will transmit through both their milk and growth qualities. We have been pioneers in stressing the importance of maternal strength. You are assured of superior milking replacements when using bulls with high Maternal EPDs.

CARCASS ABILITY

Possibly no herd has done more long-term documented carcass work. We had the kids 4-H steers tested and are proud to report that of the three steers we have tested by a son of Golden Achiever they have averaged the following carcass excellence:

3 Steers: Backfat: 0.3; Yield Grade: 1.9; Quality Grade: Choice; Ribeye Area: 18 sq.in. We don’t believe any breed or any program can produce more superior, consistent carcasses than these!

BIRTH WEIGHT EPD

We are giving each lot an amount of stars above the birth weight EPD box to designate whether bulls can be comfortably used on different kinds of cows. This explanation is as follows:

Indicates a birth weight tendency for mature cows

Indicates birth weight for all cows and larger heifers

Indicates that birth weight should be acceptable for all heifers and cows

UDDER PIGMENT POSSIBILITY (UPP)

Only at DESERT MART! Again this year, we are indicating UPP with the three rankings of H (high), M (moderate) and L (low). Example: UPP-M would indicate that female progeny from this example lot would have a moderate possibility of possessing udder pigmentation.
