Past American Hereford Association (AHA) field representative John Meents was inducted into the Livestock Marketeers Hall of Fame during the organization’s 57th annual banquet held June 14 in Kansas City, Mo.

Meents was recognized for his decades of helping producers market their livestock. He served as a field representative for various organizations from 1978 until his retirement in 2021, including: American Yorkshire Club and its Yorkshire Journal, the Drovers Journal, American Polled Hereford Association and its Polled Hereford World, and AHA and its Hereford World.

Wisconsin Hereford Assn. unveils Heifer Grant program and donation heifer

Bacon Branch Beef LLC, owned by the Bevan Family, Platteville, Wis., donated BB Veronica 96 EJ to the Wisconsin Junior Hereford Association (WJHA) in memory of Dave Bevan. Featured as Lot 1 during the Wisconsin Hereford Association (WHA) annual spring sale held March 5 in Fennimore, Wis., the donated heifer brought more than $11,600 after she was sold raffle-style. The winning ticket was purchased by WHA members Kim and Jeanine Radel.

All proceeds from the donation heifer help support the WJHA and provide educational opportunities, scholarships and other programs to encourage interest in the cattle industry and the Hereford breed. The Bevan family was proud to follow in the footsteps of other Wisconsin Hereford breeders who have donated heifers to support WJHA in the past including: Steiny’s Polled Herefords, Mark Friedrich Family, SNL’s Whitetail Farm and Owego Stock Farm

“We are honored to be donating BB Veronica to the WJHA this year in memory of Papa Dave,” says Jackie Bevan, of Bacon Branch Beef LLC. “His passion for the Hereford breed was nothing short of amazing. While he only started breeding Herefords in 2012, he sure knew how to pick them from the start. It was always his dream to have a great herd of purebred cows, and man, did he make it happen.”

WHA also unveiled its inaugural Heifer Grant Program, sponsored by the association’s spring sale consigners. WJHA members could apply for a $500 grant to use toward a Hereford female in the spring sale. Applicants submitted an essay detailing how the grant could help them start their own herd of Hereford cattle, goals for their herd, and plans to pay off the balance of the purchase price and care for the female.

Landen Knuth, of Narrows Creek Farm, Loganville, Wis., earned the first WHA Heifer Grant for use toward purchase of a Hereford female at the spring sale. Knuth purchased Huth E078 Mandy H008, a bred female consigned by Huth Polled Herefords, Oakfield Wis. Knuth’s purchase gave birth to a heifer calf, giving him another potential addition to his Hereford herd. The WHA congratulates Knuth on a great start.
