Man Breaks Neck In Swimming Pool Matthew Walters fractured one of the vertebrae in his neck and dislocated another after he dived into a four foot pool while on a stag do in and hit the bottom. He underwent surgery to fuse the bones together but has been warned by doctors that he might never walk again. Speaking from his hospital bed in Alicante, he said: “My friend, who is tall, was in the pool and the water was above his chest, so I never thought it wasn’t deep enough.

“I was perfectly sober. I just dived in and took a knock to the head and I floated to the top. “My head was telling me to get out of the water, but I couldn’t do anything with my limbs. I went unconscious and

when I woke up I was out of the pool.”

He is now back in the UK, his wife Nicola said on his Go Fund Me page

Friday 29th July

Dear Readers

Welcome and with the start of August soon upon us, I am actually moaning about the fact that July has simply disappeared and for what ever reason I just don’t have a clue where the time has gone. I am already planning for September knowing that August will also soon be a distant memory so in the meantime let’s enjoy it and take time to relax, swim and enjoy the long warm evenings. Slap on the sun cream before going out and keep well hydrated, taking water with you wherever you may be going. If you drive then again it’s a wise move to carry fresh water with you just in case you may need it. For all sports fans the next big event is almost here, I just love to follow the Olympics that starts on 5th August and soon will also be

the start of the new football season... wow already! Yep we can soon take the time to see the new team line-ups as well as a few new managerial roles; one name seems to be the highlight JOSÉ MARINIO. We also have a New England manager in place big Sam has left a job vacancy at Sunderland for none other thane David Moyes to take the reins. So we can sit back and enjoy the summer month of August with some thrills and spills in between sunbathing and dipping in the pool. Although many visitors here in August seem to be Spanish, I have noticed that there are still a high number of Brits around; many of whom come to enjoy the children’s summer school holidays knowing

British Deputy Ambassador & Consul Listen to EU Referendum Concerns By Spencer WIlliams

In a meeting on Tuesday (19 July), local British residents had the chance to put their concerns about the outcome of the recent EU referendum to the Deputy Ambassador, Tim Hemmings, and Consul for Alicante, Sarah-Jane Morris. The British Embassy representatives promised to keep them up to date with developments concerning the UK’s exit from the European Union. The meeting discussed the practical implications of the referendum outcome, and was hosted by the provincial government of Alicante. Local government officials, hoteliers and legal specialists spoke to the recently appointed Mr Hemmings about the key issues facing British nationals in Spain after the EU membership referendum. The meeting also heard the views of representatives from local English speaking associations. Tim Hemmings reassured British residents that they would “not experience any immediate changes in their circumstances”. Recognising

the high number of Brits living in the Valencia region, he explained that the rights of both British and Spanish citizens to live, work and study in each other’s countries had not changed, and the UK would remain a full member of the EU until exit negotiations were completed. The Deputy Ambassador emphasised the strong trade and investment links between the UK and Spain, and said that the UK’s relationship with Spain would remain close after the UK’s exit from the EU. Alicante Consul Sarah-Jane Morris added, “We are committed to listening to the concerns of British nationals in Spain, following the referendum. It is also important that we keep British nationals up-to-date with any changes as we negotiate our exit from the EU”. More information on what the EU referendum means for British nationals travelling and living in Europe is available on the UK government website at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/ advice-for-british-nationals-travellingand-living-in-europe

Spanish Man Murders Wife In Bennicassim

By Spencer WIlliams

A 40 year old man has been arrested in Benicàssim after allegedly killing his partner, 43, with a knife as well as assaulting their two children, a girl aged 11 and a boy aged 13, reported the emergency services and the Civil Guard. The incident occurred around 8am on Wednesday 20th July in the Castellon town when the man, of Spanish nationality, attacked and killed his wife, who was originally from Poland, The man also stabbed and wounded his two children, however the seriousness of the injuries has not been confirmed. After committing the attacks, the man called the 112 Emergency line confessing to the crime and was arrested shortly after by the Guardia Civil.

The couples neighbours said that that it was out of nowhere and that they had never heard the couple argue. They also spoke of the woman who was called Cristina and that she was a good neighbour, however the statements have been contradicted by another woman who was in a cafe on the same street, who explained to reporters that a mutual friend had said that Cristina “had said more than once that she was afraid” of her partner. So far in July, at least 5 women have been killed by their partners or former partners, the same figure as July last year bringing the total of deaths as a result of domestic violence this year a figure that could rise to 32 as six cases are currently under investigation.

Man Rescued After Ignoring Red Flags

By David Rogers

Last week on the Arenal beach of Javea. at around 19:30, a 45-yearold, entered the water ignoring the instructions of lifeguards and red flags. The members of Red Cross Xàbia in charge of surveillance of Arenal beach, hoisted the red flags due to safety with strong waves and rip-currents affecting the entire beach, lifeguards entered the water ensuring everyone knew the red flags were raised and also reported over loudspeakers the danger of entering the water. The recklessness of the man nearly cost him his life ignoring the flags and announcements, luckily he

was recused after getting into trouble and before it put anyone else at risk The Red Cross stresses the importance of following indications from lifeguard staff at all times to enjoy safe bathing. It is vital to know the meaning of the flags and not to swim in areas indicated as dangerous by banners and posters.

Circus With Animals Goes Ahead Despite Ban

By David Rogers

The town hall claimed the ruling had come too late to prevent the circus in Las Lagunas from setting up as it already had permission. ‘Any motion needs a month to take effect,” said a Ciudadanos spokesman. However The Buzz reported in our last issue that the town hall in Torrevieja had acknowledged posters advertising a Circus with animals but

People are furious over a broken promise to ban circuses with animals in Mijas. It comes despite a council meeting, last month that agreed to outlaw such entertainment. “We all approved the motion and a few days later discover posters all over the place for a circus with animals,” insisted a spokesman for the PP party.

stated that they had accepted the conditions in writing. Despite this it seems that the circus will be the last to be awarded permission in Torrevieja, for now it seems the best way to stop the overall practice of animal circuses is to boycott them completely. Only two years ago, a carousel ride with horses erected in the same area was outlawed after local protests,

and Mijas council agreed to ban the carousel due to the after a 65,000 signature petition was received. It is important that these forms of entertainment do not continue as they force animals to live “constantly in overcrowded and unhygienic conditions at abnormally hot or cold temperatures”.

First Ever Female Firefighter In Valencia

By David Rogers

The first ever female fire-fighter has joined the provincial fire brigade in Valencia. Patricia Soriano joined the team this month, after following training for 5 years. Patricia was training to be a teacher when she met a fire fighter who said that she had the right profile to become a fire fighter, which led her to consider her future, so she decided to make the switch and follow a new dream. After working, training and studying hard for five years she

has achieved her goal but insists her situation is “not exceptional” as everyone trains hard to become a fire fighter. Patricia who defends equal opportunities said “I want to be valued for what I am” and not be prejudiced against or have any special benefits or treatment. She is the first female fire fighter to sign up in the brigades’ history and one of 36 new members who have just managed to gain a place after completing their final exams and training

First baby with Zika Related Police Issue Guidelines Microcephaly Born in Spain as Pokémon Craze Sweeps Spain

By Spencer WIlliams

Spain has recorded its first case of a baby born with the microcephaly birth defect associated to the Zika virus, health authorities said on Monday.

The mother had been diagnosed with the virus in May and had decided to keep the baby, a spokeswoman for the regional health authorities of Catalonia, where the baby was born,

By Spencer WIlliams

Spanish police have been forced to issue guidelines on how to safely play Pokémon GO as the augmented reality game sweeps across Spain. In a campaign targeting hunters of the virtual cartoon pocket monsters, police advice gamers to remember that “the real world” includes obstacles such “pedestrian crossings, traffic lights, street furniture - don’t be the cause, or the victim, of an accident”. “Remember it is absolutely prohibited to play Pokémon while driving or cycling,” the guidelines state. They also warn against trespassing on private property or walking along busy roads. The campaign was launched by Spain’s National Police just hours after officers had to rescue a Japanese couple who had wandered into a busy motorway tunnel in Barcelona in search of Pokémon.

Meanwhile in Madrid two men, both 25, were arrested just before dawn on Monday after they entered a Civil Guard barracks in a bid to capture a rare monster. Police warned players that the use of GPS technology for the game means users’ location is visible to others, potentially making them vulnerable to muggings or theft, as well as signalling when they are not at home. Pokémon Go, the smartphonebased version of the classic 1990s game, became available in Spain on Friday, July 15th, and has already amassed huge popularity. Spain’s parks and city spaces as well as most famous tourist sites have been awash with gamers gripping their smart phones and making the tell-tale swiping movements as they seek out Pokémon and his monster friends.

Learning Valencian May Soon Be Compulsory in Vega Baja Schools

By Spencer WIlliams

A survey by the Valencian Government has found that 23.3% of people in Castillian Spanish speaking areas, like the Vega Baja, do not understand Valencian and 68% cannot write it. The survey found that people in Valencian speaking areas have mastered both languages and have the advantage because they have more complete training in languages, a better knowledge

of other languages, like English, and better job prospects. For instance, Valencian is required to work as a Valencian civil servant. Education director Rubén Trenzano said experts will have to examine the results and suggest “what should be done to even out the differences between the two official languages in this country”. This could include scrapping the optional exemption from Valencian.

Education Councillor Vicent Marzà and Education director Rubén Trenzano

The Partido Popular in the Vega Baja reacted to this by claiming it is “the first step towards handing Alicante over to the Catalan Countries”. “They want to force young people of the Vega Baja to study in Valencian. This contradicts the most basic democratic values and is a full on attack on the freedom of families to choose the education they want for their children,” said the PP’s area coordinator Adrián Ballester.

Country Ribs Our team returned to Country Ribs in Albir last weekend not only resulted in a delicious meal, but was an ideal opportunity to soak up the sun which was beaming down on their ranch style terrace. The day offered uninterrupted sunshine in a idealic location, with stunning views out to the beach front and across to Calpe and the Rock of Ifach. Country Ribs is a perfect place for the whole family and is very popular with children, as the American Diner food is just the taste that most kids enjoy... ribs, burgers, pizza and even meals designed specifically for the little ones with a choice of meal deals that include a drink and desert. The menu choice offers something for everyone and some of the most popular dishes that we noticed are the ranch style chicken and the juicy steaks.

Steak House

The plates are huge so be sure you visit with a healthy appetite. The menu has so much to offer plus a selection of specialities with six exciting COMBO style sharing options. The variety is really amazing. My choice was the COUNTRY RHAPSODY, this caught my eye as it included Hungarian Goulash together with a mixture of Chicken, Lamb, Spare Ribs and Pork Kebabs. The serving was huge and filled with sides of potato wedges and chips. I can honestly say the amount of food in the COMBO was enough for 3 or 4 people. Being meat lovers this combo was perfect. Lamb chops cooked over the BBQ, together with chicken breast, spare ribs and kebabs, plus the Hungarian Goulash strategically positioned in the centre of the display. The team ordered a variety of other popular meals, grilled chicken, cheese and bacon burger and the star of the show was the full rack of baby back ribs with a choice of 4 tasty sauces. The size of the rack of ribs amazed me, it took over the plate. The meat was falling off the bone and was complemented with a tangy Jack Daniels & Coke sticky BBQ sauce, a smokey but sweet flavour. Our bench style table had plenty of space to sit our group of five adults plus the high chair attached at the end. The restaurant was taken over by families so it was great to see that there was no shortage of high

chairs and the mums and dads could enjoy their meals, while the smaller ones were also taking part at the table. Country Ribs is situated in Albir directly on the beach front and also in Benidorm opposite the Riviera Hotel. The restaurant chain has been impressing clients with the quality of their cuisine for many years and has built up a reputation as being the best American diner in the area. Hormonal, Hot & Had Enough?

The menopause is actually the last menstrual period of a woman’s life. The average age of the menopause is 51 but it can occur later or much earlier. It is the end of her reproductive years. She will stop producing eggs and her sex hormones drop to very low levels. However, problematic symptoms can begin around 10 years before this! This time leading up to the menopause, is called the peri-menopause. Women can also suffer menopausal symptoms for many years after the menopause too!

How will I know when I am going through the menopause? This is very difficult to answer as often a woman

may not know, especially if she is younger than average. Her periods may be normal and regular but she may be experiencing other symptoms such as memory loss or tearfulness. Women may be misdiagnosed with depression when in fact the cause is hormonal. However, if you are aware of the symptoms of menopause, you may be able to piece together the puzzle. It is important to remember that these symptoms may have other causes that should be ruled out by a Doctor. Symptoms include: -Unusually emotional/irritable/angry -Depression -Anxiety -Low energy -Low sex drive -Pain during sexual intercourse -Irregular/chaotic periods -Periods that are very heavy or unusually light -Hot flushes -Night sweats -Memory loss -Poor sleep -Inability to cope with life Put this together with getting wrinkles, sagging skin and breasts and flab appearing from nowhere and you can see that this is not always a fun time in a woman’s life! The good news is that suffering is not compulsory!

The Family Medical Centre, Albir has a special offer throughout July 2016. Menopause assessment 25€ (normal price 38€). Appointments only - Call 966 865 072

Home Remedies for Dog Hair Loss Just like how we suffer from hair loss, dogs too have this problem! Hair loss in the course of shedding is usual for dogs. For example, German shepherds and Bernese mountain dogs will shed more hair than wheaten terriers and a few types of Spaniels. Also, all the dogs will shed more during the longer days beginning in the summer than they will during the shorter days starting in the winter. This is due to the seasonal shedding rotations related to variations in light. However, when extreme shedding occurs, especially to the point of baldness, dog hair loss can be a signal of deeper issues.

Symptoms of Dog Hair Loss Hair loss in dogs is more often than not accompanied by other symptoms like itching and skin irritation. A dog’s hair loss indication can be the effect of numerous medical problems including mange, mites, ticks or dermatitis. Home remedies for treating dog hair loss are safe to try to provide momentary relief, but a definite opinion of the reasons should be taken from a vet. Mentioned below are some of the home remedies you can try to get rid of the problem of hair shedding.

Tips of Home Remedies for Dog Hair Loss 1. One of the best ways to reduce excessive shedding in dogs is to start with a healthy diet. Feed your dog with a homemade mix of fully-cooked rice, cooked vegetables and boiled chicken. This home

food remedy may reduce the allergies caused by food to your dog and helps in reducing the hair fall. 2. Goldenseal is an excellent natural treatment for dog hair loss as long as it is not overdone. Make a weak mixture of goldenseal tea and apply it to the affected area. Goldenseal is powerful, so be sure not to make the tea too strong. 3. Another home remedy for hair shedding in dogs is to mix a small amount of flaxseed oil in your dog’s food. Flaxseed oil contains high amounts of Omega 3, an excellent natural treatment for dog hair loss. After a few weeks you would see the change in your dog’s hair fall. It is good for other health benefits too.

4. Olive oil is a good home remedy to apply on dog’s coat and skin. It will help moisturize as well as pacify any pain caused by severe itching. Another benefit of olive oil is that it will choke mites, if those fleas are the cause of dog’s hair loss. Olive oil is said to give the dog a fine and healthy coat with an amazing shine. 5. Lemon juice has natural antibacterial properties that can be used to treat excessive hair shedding in dogs. Introduce a slice of lemon in warm water and leave for five hours. Strain afterward and apply the lemon juice mixture as a rinse or as a spot treatment. 6. An additional home remedy to follow is to pat your dog in the backyard after the bath and then brush him down. By this way, all the unwanted hair on the dog’s coat is removed. Regular baths encourage loose hair to fall out in the tub (or outside) instead of on your furniture. However over-bathing can cause dry skin, which causes fur to fall out.

La Tomatina

La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Buñol near to Valencia in Spain. Thousands upon thousands of people make their way from all corners of the world to fight in this ‘World’s Biggest Food Fight’ where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets. The weeklong festival features music, parades, dancing, and fireworks. On the night before the tomato fight, participants of the festival compete in a paella-cooking contest. Prior to 2013 anywhere from 40,000 to 50,000 (reported to be 50,000 in 2012) people crammed into this huge tomato fight, greatly expanding Bunol’s normal 9,000 person population. Since the 2013 event official ticketing was put into place limiting the number of participants to just 20,000 lucky people. There is limited accommodation for people who come to La Tomatina, so many people take the easier option of staying in nearby Valencia just 38km to Bunol by bus or train. In preparation for the dirty mess that will ensue, shopkeepers use huge plastic covers on their storefronts in order to protect them from the carnage.

What Happens at La Tomatina At around 11 am, the first event of the Tomatina begins. Many trucks haul the bounty of tomatoes into the center

of the town, Plaza del Pueblo. The tomatoes come from Extremadura, where they are less expensive. Technically the festival does not begin until one brave soul has climbed to the top of a two-story high, greased-up wooden pole and reached the coveted ham at the top. In practice this process takes a long time and the festival starts despite no one reaching the meaty prize. The signal for the beginning of the fight is firing of water cannons, and the chaos begins. Once it begins, the battle is generally every man for himself. Those who partake in this event are strongly encouraged to wear protective safety goggles and gloves. In addition, they must squish the tomatoes before throwing for safety precautions. Another rule is that no one is allowed to bring into this fight anything that may provoke someone into a more serious brawl, such as a glass bottle. Although it is forbidden to tear someone else’s clothing, the crowd tends to ignore this and invariably will rip the shirt of any clothed person, man or woman. After exactly one hour, the fighting ends when the water cannons are fired once more to signal the end. At this point, no more tomatoes can be thrown. The cleaning process involves the use of fire trucks to spray down the streets, with water provided from a Roman aqueduct. The authorities seem more concerned with cleaning the town than cleaning the visitors, so some people find water at the Bunol River to wash themselves,

although some kind residents will hose passers-by down. Once the tomato pulp is flushed, the ground is clean due to the acidity of the tomato.

The Rules of La Tomatina • Do not bring bottles or hard objects as they can cause accidents and hurt other participants • Do not rip other people’s T-shirts • You must squash the tomatoes before throwing them as this reduces the impact • Ensure you keep a safe distance from the lorries • As soon as you hear the second shot, you must stop throwing tomatoes

Useful Advice Wear closed shoes that you don’t mind throwing away afterwards. If you wear flip-flops, you may get hurt, or you could lose them easily during the battle Wear old clothes, or clothes that you aren’t planning to wear again. They will

most likely end up damaged from being ripped or incredibly dirty You may find goggles useful. However, it is safer if you just ensure that you always have something clean to wipe your eyes with. The best thing is if you tuck your T-Shirt into your shorts to keep the bottom part of your T-shirt clean and dry If you are planning to take pictures, bring a waterproof camera! If you’re not from Buñol, and you want to stay overnight, don’t forget to look for and secure accommodation in advance Do not miss the Palojabón – a soap-covered pole with a Spanish ham at the top: whoever can climb the pole and get the ham can keep it! Stay safe and enjoy the festivities as much possible

Where is Bunol? Buñol is a town and municipality in the province of Valencia, Spain and is situated approximately 38 km west of the provincial and autonomous community capital city, Valencia.

Squirrels In Your Spanish Garden

Living close to the pinewoods, squirrels are part of everyday life. Tree squirrels are really cute – in fact some of their antics can be downright adorable. That said however, these pesky critters can rip bark off trees, dig up plants and bulbs, and ransack outdoor bird feeders. The thing about squirrels is that they are terribly curious, and always on the lookout for food – they think our newly planted beds and pots might well contain something they like to eat (like seeds, and bulbs), and that is what they are checking out. So how do you keep them out of your garden and planter beds? Now there are many things you can do, but there are only a few that consistently work. Let us go over the best ways to keep squirrels out of your planter beds, pots, bird feeders and to stop them from shredding your tree bark.

Keep squirrels away from tree bark Wrap the bark – Wrap 24-inch (60 cm) wide aluminum flashing around the base of tree trunks to prevent squirrels from shredding the bark. It is easy to shape and work with and can be purchased in most hardware or DIY shops.

many times because they are Keep a couple of bird baths full of water for them. Make a decoy – You can also set up a feeder away from the area you want left alone and fill it with nuts and seeds. They will eat that, and stay away from your planter beds, pots and trees.

Tricks that do not work as well

Use aluminum or stainless steel nails or screws to attach the metal to the trunk. Do not worry about using a nail, because something the size of a nail hammered into a tree will not hurt it. The nail would most likely be inserted about 1 inch (2.5 cm) into the bark. The tree should compartmentalize and heal the wound around it just fine.

Tricks to keep squirrels out of garden beds and pots Wire mesh – This is the best method. Use strong, tightly woven wire mesh weighted down with bricks, till the new planting has settled down – especially if you have planted bulbs.

Remove the mesh when the seeds or bulbs start to grow. Squirrels only seem to be interested in newly planted things – once they have been there a while and settled, they lose interest. Give squirrels water – This works really well too. Keep in mind that squirrels eat things in the garden

Chicken wire or plastic mesh does not work as well because if the squirrels really want to get at the pots and beds, they will move it or gnaw through it. Mothballs do not seem to make much difference. They may work for a day or two, but then they need to be replenished. Motion detection sprinklers give off a sudden burst of water and will frighten them, but only temporarily. Ground chili peppers, black or cayenne pepper – some squirrels can get used to this and will eat through it. So it is a temporary measure. Fake snakes/hoses, marigolds, hair, predator urine, cats, pin wheels, coffee grounds, and soap are all things that usually do not work or work only on a very temporary basis.

Fixed Rate Mortgages on the Increase

According to the latest quarterly report published by the Spanish Mortgage Association (AHE), some 57.3% of the new mortgages contracted in May were of fixed or mixed interest rate types, while the remaining 42.7% were variable rate mortgages.

and 10 years, and the remaining 42.7%, had a variable interest rate of less than one year. The Association also highlighted the increase in the number of loans with a fixed rate to term, which accounted for 31.4% of the transactions, compared with 4.95% in 2015.

The AHE pointed out that the fixed rate mortgages “are gaining ground” due to the advantages they offer in terms of stability, both to the mortgage holder and the financial institutions in an environment of low interest rates.

Moreover, El Mundo reported that the outstanding mortgage balance registered in April 2016, the latest data available, shows a year-on-year decline of 3.41%, to 673,983 million euros. The AHE stated that: “Since the process of adjustment in the Spanish mortgage market began in 2010, the outstanding mortgage balance has continued to decrease at a sustained pace. However, the latest data shows a clear

the first quarter of the year, representing a year-on-year decrease of 6.47%.

The report shows the same behaviour in the managed mortgage credit balance, which in April stood at 684,132 million euros, representing a drop of 3.6%, year-on-year.

By sectors, the real estate household credit balance, which accounted for 76.3% of the total real estate credit, decreased by 4.7%, to 546,795 million euros. Credit for real estate activities, representing 17.9% of the total real estate credit, decreased by 11.9% in March, to 128,106 million euros. In addition, credit for construction activities recorded a reduction of 10.9%, with a balance of 41,472 million euros.

As with the mortgage lending balance, the real estate credit balance in Spain has experienced a similar adjustment process. Thus, the total real estate credit balance maintained the same trend observed in earlier periods, standing at 716,373 million euros in

Properties Now Sell 50% Faster on the Costa del Sol Than in 2015

The Costa del Sol has always been a popular place to buy property, although those wanting to sell may have struggled to find a buyer with so many homes on the market.

purchases, is the reason that sales are on the up, with the Brits showing more interest than any other nationality. They are followed by the Belgians, French, Swedish and Germans. Marbella continues to be the first place that new buyers are looking to purchase a property, although over the last two years much interest has also been shown for property in Estepona.

But this year has brought positive news. For example, according to property consulting agency Aguierre Newman, the time it takes for a property to go on the market for sale and then be purchased by a buyer has been reduced by more than half. Not only that, but the number of new builds that have recently been introduced onto the market has increased by 4.87% from last year, reaching 15,555 homes. This is the first rise since 2007. Although houses are taking less time to sell, it can still take up to 52 months (previously 104 months) before a multi-family unit of homes/apartments is sold, and around 22 months (previously 55 months) before a buyer is found for a single larger property. A typical apartment on the Costa

Prices on the Costa del Sol in general are expected to rise up to 10% between now and next year in popular areas such as Marbella, Estepona or Casares.

del Sol would have an area of approximately 133 square metres, with a price tag of around 223,050 euro. On the other hand, the single villa-type property would measure around 425 square metres and cost 1,007,694 euro. The prices of the bigger homes have actually gone up 39%, while the price of single-family units have stabilised and remained the same.

New promotions are being launched onto the Costa del Sol market in greater volume than 12 months ago, with 69% more than in 2015. This is showing that there is a renewed demand for residential property in the area, which has been lagging or even non-existent in the last seven or eight years. Demand from international buyers, who make up 15.4% of the total

Is The British Love Affair With Spanish Property Investment Justified? It is easy to understand why so many Brits consider property investment when they move to Spain. The unprecedented rise in UK property prices over the last few decades has allowed many Brits in Spain to realise their dream retirement. Selling their 3-bed semi in the UK has allowed them to purchase a beautiful villa on the Costa Blanca and even leave them with a large lump sum left over. The temptation to invest their remaining cash in a bargain holiday apartment and generate a nice rental income to top up their pensions is often too much to resist. But is it the right thing to do? The first thing I always say to clients when they tell me they are considering a property investment in Spain is to not assume that the Spanish property market is anything like the UK. The chart below highlights this, and shows the average price of both UK and Spanish property over the last 10 years.

result in losses over the first 10 years. A very popular alternative to property investment in Spain is to open a Spanish Compliant Bond. These are offered by large household names like The Prudential and Old Mutual International and allow expats in Spain to hold their investments in a tax-efficient wrapper. They do not require on going reporting or Modelo 720 declarations. Capital gains tax is only payable on withdrawals which makes them tax efficient allowing for ‘gross roll-up’ of returns and any taxes due are paid for on your behalf, making them a stress-free investment option. Most Spanish Compliant Bonds do not include any initial set-up costs so unlike property, you could start seeing returns from day one. One of the most popular Spanish Compliant Bonds is offered by Prudential International, part of The Prudential Group, who have over 23 million customers Worldwide.

Comparing this to the performance of Spanish property, along with the relative costs, highlights just why these bonds are so popular with the expat community here in Spain. These bonds are only available through approved financial advisors and may not be suitable for everyone. There are costs associated with any investment and investments can go up as well as down. If readers would like to discuss their suitability for an investment with Prudential International or any other Spanish Bond provider please do not hesitate to contact me directly. I’m always happy to offer free advice and recommendations for suitable plans based on your individual circumstances. My details are provided below. As you can see, where UK prices have hit all-time highs, Spanish property prices have fallen substantially; meaning those investing in property in Spain would have made fairly large losses. With the recent Brexit vote, Spanish property will be hit again. Firstly, British buyers have far less bang for their buck, with Pound Sterling buying around 16% less Euros than at this time last year. Add into that at least 2 years of uncertainly whilst the UK re-negotiate the rights of expats here in Spain, and it’s highly likely there will be a big reduction in Brits investing here. This will have an inevitable impact on property prices. Add the extremely high purchase costs in Spain, which range from 10-12% of the property value, along with relatively low gross rental yields – ranging from 3.5% to 5.8% across Spain - and it paints a pretty bleak picture. There’s also on-going costs including mortgage payments, maintenance, insurance and taxation which means rental yields could be slashed to as little as zero, or potentially

BREXIT UPDATES

Bank of Spain “Too early to calculate Brexit Effect” Since the vote there has been a marked drop in British interest in Spanish property, evidenced in this office by three pre-acquisition building surveys being cancelled the day after the vote. Foreign exchange companies have reported a considerable drop in enquiries from the UK, but a big increase from people on the Costa del Sol looking to transfer funds into sterling. It is still to early to calculate what direct impact on Spain’s economy of Britain’s vote to leave the European Union last month, the country’s central bank said in its monthly report on Tuesday. Available data suggested the Spanish economy

held strong in the second quarter, boosted by domestic consumption and despite sources of uncertainty, the bank said. The Bank of Spain said there was not enough evidence available since the British vote in late June to estimate what the effect on economic growth might be. After the vote, the exchange rate dropped by 10% and has maintained that low-level, making property purchase here by sterling buyers that much more expensive. However, for sellers wishing to go back to the UK, they are now going to achieve 10% more sterling

when they sell. Accordingly, some sellers indicated that they are prepared to drop their asking price and/or permit negotiation on that price.

ITV to cut millions in Costs after Brexit vote

LONDON--ITV PLC (ITV.LN) on Wednesday said it is shaving off tens of millions of dollars of costs across the group following the U.K.’s Brexit vote last month as the broadcaster’s profit fell on higher overheads despite revenue being lifted by the firm’s expanding production arm. Chief Executive Adam Crozier said the largest British over-the-air broadcaster by revenue is targeting making savings of 25 million pounds ($32.8 million) in 2017, which would be sourced “right across the board” of the company and may involve job losses. The U.K.’s Brexit vote at the end of June roiled stock markets and led to heavy losses, including for ITV, as investors gauged the fallout from

Britain’s vote to leave the European Union. “Against a backdrop of wider economic uncertainty following the EU referendum we have put in place a robust plan to allow us to meet the opportunities and challenges ahead,” said Mr. Crozier in a statement. Still, Crozier said the cuts wouldn’t affect programming, which is driving up revenue for the business. In the six months ended June 30, revenue from external sources, a key metric, rose 11% on the year to GBP1.5 billion. ITV Studios, the company’s production arm, posted a revenue increase of 31% to GBP651 million. Net profit fell to GBP243 million from GBP257 million a year earlier. Still, pretax profit climbed 9% year-

over-year to GBP425 million. Net advertising revenue was flat at $838 million. Mr. Crozier said advertisers started to pull back from business around February, when the U.K. vote date was announced, amid concerns of a hit in consumer spending. Since then, he said, there has been no change in gear for the worse after the vote result. “I don’t think the vote really changed anything so far,” he said on the impact of Brexit on advertising sentiment. The company said it sees advertising sales falling in the near term against strong comparatives from a

year earlier. ITV said net advertising revenue would slip by about 1% in the first nine months of the year. Last year, ITV’s viewing was boosted by the Rugby World Cup, and this year sporting viewing will be focused on the Olympic Games in Brazil, which will be broadcast by the BBC.

Spain Is Fifth Cheapest EU Country in Which to Buy Alcohol Part of the reason that many visitors enjoy coming over to Spain is because they get more for their money than in their own country. For example, food, drink and cigarettes are a lot cheaper to buy in Spain than in the UK, and most tourists end up taking a lot of duty-free goods back home with them. According to a comparison study carried out by Eurostat, the cost of an alcoholic drink is almost 20% cheaper in Spain than it is for the average of the European Union as a whole. This means that Spain is the fifth EU country where alcohol is the least expensive, and buying a drink here is 20% cheaper than in most other nations. The only countries in which you can purchase alcohol for less

money than in Spain are: Bulgaria (36% cheaper than EU average), Rumania (-28%), Hungary (-26%) and the Czech Republic (-21%). At the other end of the scale, the countries where the price of alcohol is at its highest are Ireland (+75% than EU average), Finland (+72%) and the UK (+63%). In the case of cigarettes and tobacco, the prices in Spain are also lower than the European average by about 26%. The range of prices between all EU countries is much wider in this department, with the cheapest prices of tobacco in Bulgaria, Croatia or Lithuania being around 50% less than the EU average. Cigarettes cost the most in the UK (+118%) followed by Ireland (+89%). And non-alcoholic beverages

will also set you back less money in Spain than in many other countries, with prices being 8% cheaper than the EU average. Non-alcoholic drinks cost the most in Denmark (+45%), followed by Sweden (+24%), and Austria (+20%). They are the least expensive in Poland (-37%), followed by Rumania (-36%), Bulgaria (-30%), Lithuania (-22%) and the Czech Republic and Hungary (both -21%). However, not everything is less expensive in Spain. The study has also revealed that bread and cereals are 4% more costly than in other parts of Europe, although meat is 15% cheaper and milk, cheese and eggs are 4% less expensive.

Renault Grand Scenic 2016 - Review

The all-new Grand Scenic is bigger, more luxurious and more advanced than ever. It goes on sale around September this year, and although prices aren’t confirmed Renault says it’s likely to cost a little more than the outgoing version, which starts at £22,360.

There’s a 110PS diesel without the hybrid, available with a manual gearbox or a seven-speed auto, a 130PS diesel with a manual, and a 160PS diesel with the auto completing the range. Two petrol engines are available too, both TCe turbo units with manual gearboxes and either 115PS or 130PS.

This, the fourth-generation Grand Scenic, comes with five seats or seven and is 24cm longer than the latest Scenic – a substantial leap that facilitates 222 litres of extra boot space and significantly more rear legroom. And so to ensure proportionality, the wheels are 20-inches as standard across the range, which will no doubt ensure the Grand Scenic appears in its fair share of rap videos. Renault is at pains to point out that the standard tyres come with high sidewalls, which the company says will ensure comfort isn’t compromised by the caricature rims. There’s even a two-tone paint option, a BOSE surround sound stereo, and an 8.7-inch tablet display in por-

Renault has said nothing of fuel consumption or CO2 yet, but with the new Scenic range returning 45.6mpg to 68.9mpg with the same engine lineup, don’t expect much change from that.

trait orientation, with Renault clearly attempting to make this the least depressing MPV there ever was, in a market dominated by big SUVs. It’s all otherwise very sensible indeed, with the seats folding flush with the floor using just one touch, a monster 718-litre boot (in the five-seat version) and automatic emergency braking as standard. The outgoing Grand Scenic has a 702-litre boot.

Cabin storage in the new MPV is immense too, totaling 63 additional litres of space including a 13-litre centre console box and four separate under-floor compartments. The engine lineup doesn’t throw up any surprises, apart from perhaps the news there’ll be a Hybrid Assist diesel verson, which links a small electric motor to the 110PS 1.5-litre diesel engine.

The cabin promises to be airy as Joey Essex’s head thanks to a panoramic glass roof with no mid cross member, while the cabin itself is very modern thanks to the aforementioned touchscreen and a minimalistic design. Folding table should be standard across the range (UK spec is TBC), while tech includes pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist, traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control and fatigue detection.

All Motor Vehicles Must Be Insured By Law

DO I NEED TO INSURE MY VEHICLE EVEN IF IT’S OFF THE ROAD?

Some insurance policies like medical cover are not compulsory, others such as fire protection for your property, are. Your vehicle however, must be insured at all times, even if it’s kept off the road in a garage. The minimum legal compulsory insurance is Civil Liability to cover any damage to or claims from a third party, resulting from your vehicle. The existing legislation (Royal Decree 8/2004) states that any car that is kept in Spain must be insured. Trailers and other special types of vehicles that weigh less than 750 kg and cannot be driven on Spanish roads are not required to have insurance. This also means that they cannot be parked on roads or kept on private land. If you own a vehicle that’s not insured you could face a fixed penalty from €601 up to €3,005, and your vehicle may be seized and immobilised.

WHY DO I NEED TO INSURE MY CAR IF ITS KEPT IN A PRIVATE GARAGE

The owner of a vehicle has a civil responsibility towards their neighbour and their property. Civil responsibility extends beyond car accidents on Spanish roads. If a vehicle, for example, kept in a communal garage, has a fire due to a short circuit, the owner will be responsible for any resulting damages to third parties. The owner will also be liable for a fixed penalty fine, the amount will depend on the gravity of the situation, the length of time the vehicle has been without insurance, and if this is a repeat offense.

IN WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES IS INSURANCE NOT COMPULSORY? If your vehicle has officially been temporarily or permanently taken out of circulation, for example it has been scrapped, then no insurance is required. If you own a vehicle that is not being used and you wish to avoid paying for insurance, then you can apply to have it temporarily taken out of circulation. However, to do this the vehicle needs to have passed its MOT. If the MOT has expired, then it must be taken again and passed, before applying.

HOW CAN I AVOID ANY FIXED PENALTY FINES

The best option is to ensure you have adequate insurance protection for your vehicle at all times. Once your vehicle complies with Spanish regulations, you can then decide what the future use of your vehicle will be, and whether or not to keep it in circulation or take it out. If you require an insurance policy for your vehicle, you can contact Línea Directa on 902 123 161. They can supply you with a fast and efficient quote for either third party or fully comprehensive insurance.

Living Chess Celebrates 20th Anniversary

By Javeamigos

The renowned Ajedrez Viviente de Xàbia - the Living Chess event in which young schoolchildren play the chess pieces on a giant chessboard - is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a spectacular show of more than 200 participants, live music and a giant screen and sound system on Saturday 30th July at 10.00pm. Considered a ‘Fiesta of National Tourist Interest’ since 2002, the event will be for the first time under cover after spending the past nineteen editions on the quayside in the Port de Xàbia. The venue will be the Palau d’Esports Miguel Buigues, the municipal sport centre in Avenida del Furs, and

admission will be free. A huge set will be created inside with a complex system of sound and image complemented by music from the orchestra of the Centro Artístico Musical de Xàbia, the Colla Xirimitab’s and the Trio Slipete as well as dancers from the Salomé Rodríguez Dance Academy. Artistic director Rafael Andarias explained that the story that will be represented for this special edition is called “Lo esencial es invisible a los ojos” written by José Francisco Erades, professor of philosophy and part of the organising committee and based on Plato’s ‘Allergory of the Cave’ to reflect on topical issues such as insensitivity, false idols and humanity. Erades himself noted

that, as usual, the theme of the Living Chess event has a cultural component and a vindictive bias which this year is the defense of philosophy in the wake of it being removed as a compulsory subject, in addition to other objectives such as raising the need for people to reflect on how their lives have been changed since the appearance of the mobile phone. The match being represented is the hame between Jacob Mure and Antoine Lobstein in Paris in 1988 and those charged with moving the pieces will be Sebastià Morant (best rated in the Fogueres Chess Tournament) and Sergio Claramunt (founder and artistic director of the OGN PayaSOSpital. Mayor José Chulvi, along with councillor Quico Moragues (Culture), thanked Rafael Andarias and his team’s effort and interest to keep this special event going for two decades, covering culture, education and sport, in addition to addressing universal values with stories that get a message across

to the participating children and the public. The municipal representatives as well as Juanjo García, the president of the Commission of Nuestra Señora del Loreto who is behind the organisation of event, have invited residents,

visitors and people from across the region to visit Xàbia on July 30th to enjoy this unique spectacle. They also thanked the support of Obra Social La Caixa as main sponsor of the event.

Javea U3A Summer Barbecue

By David Rogers

ONE hundred members and guests of Javea U3A enjoyed a summer barbecue at Quo Vardis on Thursday evening. This was the first big event organised by events coordinator Shirley King – and it was voted a rip-roaring success! There was no shortage of freshly cooked food, including homemade burgers, sausages, ribs and spicy chicken followed by generous portions of apple crumble and ice-cream. After enjoying the food, washed down

by their favourite tipples, guests danced the night away to the music of popular singer Matt Curtis. In his welcome speech, Javea U3A president Eric Atkins thanked Shirley and her band of helpers for putting on such an excellent event – and said he hoped to see another good turnout at the next big gettogether, the annual barn dance in October. Shopper’s Life Saved By Supermarket Defibrillator

By David Rogers

Use of a defibrillator by security guards from Alcampo supermarket and Zenia Boulevard commercial centre in Orihuela Costa has saved the life of a German customer who had a heart attack while at the fruit section of the store with his family. The security guards needed to apply two shocks to get his heart beating again until the emergency services arrived and took him to hospital for an operation, which he is recovering from satisfactorily. Statistics show that about 100 people die each day in Spain of a cardiac arrest, something that is often preventable

with a cardiac massage and use of a defibrillator, which increase the chances of surviving by up to 90% if the victim is attended to in the first two minutes. This is the third life saved in an Alcampo in less than two months, as similar incidents occurred in Zaragoza and Madrid which both also had a happy ending. Zenia Boulevard has 5 defibrillators, one of which is movable all over the centre as it is fitted to the back of a security moped.

Speed Radar and Specialist Equipment Given to Rojales Police

By Spencer WIlliams

The Spanish Traffic Department (DGT) and Rojales Town Hall have signed an agreement to let the Local Police borrow specialist equipment for security and traffic control work. Polic Chief Iñaki Esparza said they are trying to get a continuous vigilance and prevention campaign going to make the roads safer and make drivers aware they have to respect the speed limits in urban areas. The main reason, he explained, is that residents of at least 10 parts of the municipality,

especially in urbanisations, have complained about the high speeds of vehicles. “These are wide and straight urban roads that become dangerous places for pedestrians and other drivers by some people not respecting the speed restrictions.” The systems lent by the DGT are a vehicle inside which a radar computer photographs and records the speed of vehicles by using waves. The vehicle is also used

to take measurements by automatically counting the number of vehicles passing a certain point during a day. The officers also have a breathalyser that emits a paper receipt and can measure both

the quantity of alcohol in a person and directly in liquids. Numerous officers of the Local Police have been trained how to operate the radar so they can use the equipment lent by the DGT.

Campoamor Festival Town Hall Denies Licence By Spencer WIlliams

The Campoamor festival in Orihuela Costa, which was planned for the 3rd of August, is in doubt after the Town Hall denied a licence for the event. This is what the Federation of Associations of Orihuela Costa (FAOC) has assured in a statement, which explained that they had access to the municipal licence application file for the festival yesterday. They informed they were able to check first hand that this permission has been denied by the municipal technician in charge of the file, and that the decision has already been communicated to the company organising it. However, the residents association has

denounced that tickets are still being sold for the event via its website. They lamented that the Town Hal has not officially informed residents about this situation, both those who live in the area where the festival is held and the general public so that they do not keep buying tickets for an event that, as things stand, does not have authorisation. The residents have always been against the festival because they believe that its location entails a serious risk to people’s safety and irreparable damage to the environment in case of a fire. They called on the organising company to look for an alternative place to hold it, which would not cause these problems.

Transport Service for Disabled Swimmers at Torrevieja’s Playa de Los Locos

By David Rogers

People who use the assisted swimming service on Torrevieja’s beaches have a free transport service available they can use, which will pick them up from their homes and take them to Playa de Los Locos, explained Councillor Javier Manzanares. To use it, call 647 599 624 between 11am and 7pm.

The vehicle starts to pick people up from midday and takes them to Los Locos beach, where they can enjoy the special adapted swimming equipment installed there, and then get taken back again at about 2pm. In the afternoon there is a second shift, which picks people up at 4pm and takes them back at 6pm. The vehicle has 4 places and so can take 8 people

per day, and 56 per week. Users can take a companion with them to the beach. Manzanares reminded that Torrevieja also has areas for adapted swimming on the beach of the Paseo de Juan Aparicio and Playa de Los Náufragos. People who want to use these have to go to the lifeguards’ hut so that everyone can take it in turns. The lifeguards will also help people who need it to swim.

Walkways Installed in San Roque Area to Make it Easier to Reach the Sea

By David Rogers

The Councillor informed that two walkways have been installed in the swimming area of San Roque to make it easier to reach the sea in this rocky area.

“Residents and visitors can get to the water without problems and especially those with reduced mobility,” he said, adding that next year they hope to be able to add more

walkways because these ones have proved so popular. The walkways are two metres wide and will be removed once the summer has finished.

Dry River Clean Up

By Spencer Williams

The City of Alfaz del Pi has completed a clean up of the dry river area along Boulevar de los Músicos in Albir. The department of Environment and Technical Services coordinate the clean ups which includes fumigation and pruning trees along the 800-meter stretch leading to the sea. The main purpose of this dry river is to dispose of excess water in rainy periods, which due to the mountainous surroundings can be quite a lot as it all meets close to the sea. Throughout the 800-meter long stretch there are over

120 species of plants, most tropical and agricultural, forming a green corridor which is extremely popular with dog owners who can walk freely with their pets.

Man Arrested for Selling Drugs & Threatening His Customers With a Shotgun in Benidorm

By David Rogers

The man would give 1 months worth of drugs to gain their trust, so that then he could charge them more money later on, and if they didn’t pay,

he would threaten to kill them with his various weapons. The National police pointed out that “the victims would comply to his every demand because they where frightened of what he could do to them”, one of the victims even sold his vehicle so that he could pay the money that he owed the drug dealer.

Once the address was located, the police officers found a doublebarrel sawn-off shotgun, a long barrel revolver and various types of knives, and a total of 107 grams of cocaine inside the house. The man was finally arrested for drug trafficking, possession of illegal firearms, and making death threats.

During a one-day trial his victim gave evidence by video link. She said to the judges he had hit her when she refused sex after agreeing to return home with him. She said she had tried to escape out of a

window before McGurk threw her on his bed and forced himself on her. However it is likely he is set to serve only three years in a Spanish prison after judges delivered their verdict and ruled McGurk should receive such a lenient sentence because of the extraordinary delays in bringing the case to trial, despite the fact there was “ample proof” of the attack.

U3A Marina Baixa Ten Pin Bowling at La Marina & Trip To Tabarca

On Saturday afternoon in beautiful sunshine after the week of somewhat strange weather 32 people sat under a variety of shades in the lovely garden of Hazel & Tony Layts. Hazel, Tony & helpers did us proud for this Church fundraising event. The Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy is completely self funding so events such as this are on-going. We started off with crisps & other nibbles and a variety of homemade dips, bread & ali oli, assorted hams & cheese. Paella (of course) expertly cooked by Tony and followed by a lovely selection of postres. There was an extensive raffle and a general knowledge quiz, so we were all kept busy. A service of Holy Communion is held in Albir every Sunday at 9.45am. You can find us in the centre of Albir, turn up the main road hill, Camino de la Cantera, quite near the Consum Supermarket, signposted Rober Palas Hotel, turn right in front of the hotel and the Church (Norwegian Seaman’s Church) is just inside the next road on the left, Carrer Mart. ALSO every Thursday at 11.00am at the Forum Mare Nostrum, Alfaz del Pi we have a service of Holy Communion. The second Thursday of each month is a healing service If you need any further

information please telephone our Local Church Warden , Elaine Mitchell on 96 686 4962 or mobile 636 164 467. Albir is one of eight congregations in the Chaplaincy, from Gandia to El Campello and you can find much more information on the website www.costablanca-anglicanchaplaincy.org always be assured that a warm welcome awaits you.

Ship Ahoy!

On 22 July a full complement of U3A members boarded the coach at Albir for a day trip to Santa Pola and the island of Tabarca. On arrival at Santa Pola they had time for a coffee before embarking on the catamaran to take them to the island. The weather was kind providing a calm crossing. Tabarca Island has been inhabited since Roman times, when it was known as Isla Plana (the flat island). Today it is the largest inhabited island in the Valencian Community.

In the 1700‘s it provided a military base and was fortified to give protection to the coast against pirates. Parts of the city wall still exist as does the 18th century church which is currently undergoing restoration. The island was declared a national monument in the 1960s and in the 80s it became Spain’s first marine reserve which brought its commercial fishing to an end. Today there are no cars, no banks, no chain stores and no billboards but there are hotels, boutiques and an abundance of excellent restaurants serving locally caught fish, and members certainly took the opportunity to savour the speciality dishes on offer. After lunch many explored the island on foot before making the return journey to Santa Pola to rejoin the coach. All too soon a lovely day came to a close and thanks must go to Rob Parker, Travel Coordinator for organising a most enjoyable day with a difference.

Sporting Alfas Cricket Club Match Report

Sporting Alfas stay at the top of ECCL 1 with a decisive victory over the unbeaten Madrid Star Cricket Club. Winning the toss and inviting SACC to bat Madrid Star made a quick break through when Wright fended one off from Left arm quick bowler Cheema and was caught. Algar played a majestic innings and reached his fifty off only 47 balls, then threw it away wafting at a long hop,out for 53. New man Bhati played himself in nicely before raining carnage on the Madrid attack, Opener Laundon then followed Algar’s style with a disastrous shot from replacement bowler Waheed, out for 27. Perfect timing for Skipper Muñoz to join the fun, he and Bhati really piled on the runs until Muñoz, allegedly, middled one into his pads and was disappointed to be given out LBW for 51. K Perman walked in and out finding Cheema a bit quick, closely followed by Roper, who also blamed temporary blindness for his demise. Two ducks with Bhati standing on 76 and the total at 223 would SACC fail to take advantage of the last 8 overs and reach maximum batting points. With Cheema bowled out Alfas took complete advantage of the tired Madrid bowlers and smashed a further 66 runs

with Bhati ending his debut on 108 and Mohib striking a maximum 4 times in his 27 run innings. 289 for 6, now the game begins for Sporting Alfas Bowlers. Ropers first ball disappeared to the boundary, but the next 5 flew by the bat at a good pace, Roper and Mohib then bowled a brilliant spell and reduced the Madrid team to 23 for 4 from the first 10 overs. Tiring quickly the lads carried on in the 38 degree heat but only took 1 more wicket in what was a fantastic effort from both Openers with Mohib coming out on top with 4 for 13 from his 7 over stint and Roper bravely finishing his 9 overs and claiming 1 for 40 Madrid taking advantage of the drained quick bowler. Over to the never aging and always up for it Paul Taylor, Rizwan had read the script well and after belting 26 runs from his 38 balls decided Taylor should be taught a lesson and spanked Paul´s first ball straight to gully like a red balloon, les-

son over off you go son. A brave rear guard was required but the truth is if the first batsmen cannot get runs then the tail should not be left with a mammoth task and other than a few mighty hard strikes from Madrid Stars quicky Chee-

ma the innings fizzled out with only 92 runs on the scoreboard. Talor ending with 3 for 25, K,Perman 1 for 11. A magnificent win for SACC by 197 runs.

RFU Agrees New England Deal

England’s aim of becoming the dominant force in the global game has been strengthened by a new agreement signed by the Rugby Football Union and Premiership Rugby Limited. The eight-year partnership between Twickenham and the Aviva Premiership clubs, worth over £200m, will give national head

coach Eddie Jones greater access to players, a later deadline for selection, two additional training camps and more rest periods for his Grand Slam winners. RFU chief executive Ian Ritchie said: “This is a true partnership focused on making English rugby the best in the world for club and country.

“A strong partnership between the RFU and the PRL is critical if we are to grow professional rugby across the country for the benefit of the players, fans and the game. The RFU is focused on investing in Premiership clubs, to ensure they are sustainable, thriving businesses, which will develop players for the national game. We look forward

to working with Premiership Rugby over the next eight years to promote and support rugby in England.” Ritchie’s RFL counterpart Mark McCafferty added: “Success for England and the clubs depends on an effective partnership between the RFU and Premiership Rugby on many levels. “The significantly increased

monies to the Premiership clubs, alongside their own increased TV and commercial revenues, will ensure that Aviva Premiership Rugby continues to go from strength-to-strength based on world-class England Qualified Players and a very strong academy pipeline of talent. In addition, this is intended to underpin further European success.”

Michael van Gerwen Retains World Matchplay Title Michael van Gerwen has successfully retained the World Matchplay title with an 18-10 win over Phil Taylor. In 2014 Van Gerwen suffered a onesided defeat to Taylor in the final, but the world number one never looked like losing for a second time to the 15-time champion as he coasted to victory at the Winter Gardens. Taylor took the opening leg but as soon as Van Gerwen opened up a 3-1 lead, he never looked back and five successive legs in the third session saw him open up an 11-4 advantage. To his credit, Taylor continued to compete with his Dutch opponent but Van

Gerwen’s finishing was as good as it has been all week and it ultimately made the difference. The 27-year-old missed just nine shots at a double-all match as he ended the contest with an average of 103.93, his highest in three finals in Blackpool.

Federer to Miss Lewis Leads Pack Rest of 2016 After Hungaro-Win Lewis Hamilton took the championship lead for the first time this season after beating Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg to victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Hamilton took the lead on the run down to Turn 1, setting up a tense racelong battle which he ultimately won by just 1.9s. Rosberg fell to third behind Daniel Ricciardo at Turn 1 but was back in second by the exit of Turn 2 before heaping the pressure on Hamilton though the three stints of the race. At times Hamilton looked vulnerable and Mercedes even threatened to put Rosberg on a better strategy if the

Roger Federer will miss the rest of 2016 in order to further recuperate his previously injured knee. The 17-time Grand Slam has endured a troublesome campaign which included withdrawing from the French Open due to a back complaint, although he did reach the Wimbledon semi-final before losing to Milos Raonic. However, an upcoming appearance at the Olympics will now be cancelled as Federer prepares to sit out until next year as

a result of ongoing issues with his knee. “I’m extremely disappointed to announce that I will not be able to represent Switzerland at the Olympic Games in Rio and that I will also miss the remainder of the season,” Federer posted on Facebook. “Considering all options after consulting with my doctors and my team, I have made the very difficult decision to call an end to my 2016 season as I need more extensive rehabilitation following my knee surgery earlier this year. “The doctors advised that if I want to play on the ATP World Tour injury free for another few years, as I intend to do, I must give both my knee and body the proper time to fully recover. “It is tough to miss the rest of the year. However, the silver lining is that this experience has made me realise how lucky I have been throughout my career with very few injuries. “The love I have for tennis, the competition, tournaments and of course you, the fans remains intact. I am as motivated as ever and plan to put all my energy towards coming back strong, healthy and in shape to play attacking tennis in 2017.”

world champion backed his teammate into Ricciardo, but ultimately the new championship leader had the pace when it mattered to take his fifth victory in six races. A late lock up at Turn 12 saw Rosberg close to within 0.6s with seven laps remaining, but again Hamilton’s car was wide enough to defend his position and had the pace to build up a buffer of over a second on the following lap Hamilton has won five of the last six races, overturning a 43-point deficit to now lead the drivers’ standings from Rosberg by six points

Agent fee stalling Pogba Deal Paul Pogba’s move from Juventus to Manchester United is stalling over a stand-off regarding who pays his agent’s fee, according to Sky in Italy. The France midfielder is understood to be in advanced talks with United about a return to Old Trafford, four years after he left to play in Serie A. While agreement on his personal terms has been reached, neither club seem willing to pay the 20m euros fee Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola wants for brokering the deal.

Time Running Out in 2016 for Rory McIlroy to End Major Slump This week’s PGA Championship is McIlroy’s last chance this year to win his first major since 2014. Since he ripped off back-to-back major wins that year, he has fallen from No. 1 in the world ranking; busted up an ankle and missed a major (the 2015 British Open); lost a Saturday showdown against Jordan Spieth at the 2016 Masters; and watched other young stars ascend to his level. But here he is, in a tournament in which he’s flourished, with a chance to claim his third PGA Championship title and completely overhaul an outlook of a season that’s produced more negative headlines -- growing the game, Open club toss, skipping Rio -- than good ones. “Everything is straight out in front of you (at PGAs),” McIlroy said at his press conference at

Baltusrol on Tuesday. “There’s no real hidden secrets to it. And I feel that’s what really let’s me excel. I feel like I can play my game in PGA Championships. I can hit driver off the tee most of the time, and from there, if I drive it well, I feel like I have a big advantage. It’s always been a tournament that’s set up well for me.” McIlroy needs a third PGA title for the hat trick. He stormed to an eight-stroke victory at Kiawah Island in 2012 and edged Phil Mickelson by one to win the 2014 edition at Valhalla, the last of his four major wins. His strong start to 2015 -- fourth at the Masters, T-9 at the U.S. Open -- was neutralized by a DNP at the British at St. Andrews. He followed that with a 17th-place finish at the PGA

Big Sam Gets The Big Job

Sam Allardyce has been named as the new England football manager, replacing Roy Hodgson after a dismal Euro 2016 campaign. Hodgson resigned following England’s shock 2-1 defeat to Iceland last month. Allardyce was confirmed as his replacement last Friday, putting an end to weeks of speculation. The 61-year-old Englishman refused to confirm Wayne Rooney would remain as captain, saying it was too early to do so.

The 61-year-old was the unanimous choice of the Football Association’s three-man selection panel, comprising chief executive Martin Glenn, technical director Dan Ashworth and acting chairman David Gill. He joins on a two-year contract. “I am extremely honoured to be appointed England manager especially as it is no secret that this is the role I have always wanted. For me, it is absolutely the best job in English football,” said Allardyce.
