Dear Readers

Hi readers and to what has been a thrilling month of sport with the best ever Olympics for over 100 years a massive achievement once again has showintg the rest of the world why we are GREAT Britain. The work and commitment that Team GB have made is a sign of the good times ahead. Brexit ? Well with many unknown factors yet to be announced the mood for most Brits is calm with the thought that only time will tell over the next two years or so. For now we can all continue as normal with the tranquil life of Spain and the simply magnificent weather. As we approach the back end of August and a slightly cooler feel, well that’s what most of us hope for, as having experienced a couple of weeks of high temperatures and humidity we are looking forward to the cooler weather for September. For sports fans we have the benefit of the Premiership now fully underway and with some exciting new signings and managers in place it is all a matter of wait and see now! Most visitors here in Spain come to enjoy the beach, the words of sun sand and sangria is a common phrase, a way to describe what people associate with Spain and what people associate Spain to be. Thousands of Brits have done exactly this with record breaking numbers this August across the Alicante region. Normally August is mainly summer holiday makers from other parts of Spain and also France but things have changed as we have had reports from many business owners that August has seen more British visitors than ever before. So a very well done to the hard workers who service the hundreds of hotels, bars and restaurants in each resort along the White Coast, maintaining the tourist industry and building the future for the Spanish economy.

British M.P. Suspected of Domestic Violence Arrested in Alicante

By David Rogers

The Rochdale MP Simon Christopher Danczuk, who was suspended earlier this year for exchanging sexually explicit text messages with a 17-year-old – was arrested on the 13th of August at an apartment in Algorfa, Alicante. He was on a family holiday with his children and wife Karen who was reportedly treated at a hospital for minor cuts and bruises. Danczuk, has now been released after 3 nights in custody for domestic violence after neighbours close by alerted the police of a violent argument where Danczuk was staying with his wife. He release came after his former partner declined to ratify her former

allegation and and Danczuk denied any abuse the prosecutor asked for the case to be archived given the reported facts had not been accredited. The MP explained to the judge, that the discussion and argument was a personal matter, and admitted shouting at the time, which alerted the neighbours. The police carried out normal protocol for possible cases of domestic violence, and then detained the politician. Simon Danczuk is British Member of Parliament for the Rochdale constituency and was expelled from the Labour Party when caught messaging a 17 year old girl when he was on holiday in Spain. He admitted

Holidaymaker held for leaving baby in hot car

By David Rogers

A German father was arrested in southern Spain after he left his ninemonth-old baby in the back of the car while he went shopping. The tourist parked his car outside a supermarket in Sant Joan d’Alacant and went in to do some shopping taking his three-year-old son with him but leaving the baby sleeping in the back of a car. But the baby was spotted by concerned passers-by who flagged down a Guardia Civil patrol car at the beach resort in Alicante. The officers smashed a window to reach the baby, but were concerned

and called an ambulance. The 33-year-old father, who has not been named, returned from the supermarket to find police surrounding the car and his infant child about to be taken to hospital. The man, who was reportedly on holiday at a nearby campsite with his wife and three children, was promptly arrested and now faces a charge of child negligence. Authorities confirmed that the child was treated at the scene and fortunately showed no signs of ill health.

Jet2.com Leads Travel Industry by Banning Early Morning Sale of Alcohol By David Rogers

Leading leisure airline, Jet2.com, further bolsters its commitment to tackle disruptive and abusive behaviour by banning the sale of alcohol on-board before 08:00 BST on all its morning flights. The ground-breaking move was introduced on Monday, 8 August 2016 across all its bases. Jet2.com, the top rated UK airline on TripAdvisor, is calling for airports and retailers to follow its lead to trade responsibly and similarly ban alcohol sales before 08:00 BST. The airline also encourages industry partners to support the call for fully sealed bags for alcohol purchased in airports to prohibit the illegal consumption of personal alcohol before and during flights. Phil Ward, managing

director of Jet2.com says: “We have decided to follow up very quickly on my comments made last week, by taking positive action to allow the millions of customers and families who fly with us to travel with confidence and have a great experience with Jet2.com. “We believe that stopping sales of alcohol before 08:00 BST on our morning flights is an effective way to ensure everyone has an enjoyable and comfortable journey. We understand that we’re the first of the European airlines to take this bold step and call upon industry partners in airports to also trade responsibly.” The announcement further supports the airlines’ Onboard Together campaign which aims to reduce incidences of disruptive

behaviour on its flights. The initiative has seen more than 500 passengers refused travel with over 50 of these given lifetime bans since it

was launched in 2015. Following the release of comments by The Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, the airline has also written to the

Minister for Transport and will continue to actively consult with government bodies and MPs to further engage with them about this issue.

Be #PassportAware on your Holidays and Save Time and Money

British Embassy Press Release

Last year, over 5,000 Britons lost their passports while in Spain With over 21,000 British passports lost or stolen last year, including 5,172 in Spain, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) is urging British nationals abroad to be #PassportAware and keep their passport safe in order to avoid extra costs and troubles which may spoil their holidays. With summer now in full swing, many Britons are jetting off on their holidays. According to TripAdvisor, Southern Europe is the hot destination. Majorca is number one for Britons, followed by Tenerife and Ibiza respectively, while Crete and Lanzarote come in fourth and fifth place.* Most holidaymakers enjoy trouble-free trips. However, valuable holiday time and money can be lost if a passport is lost or stolen as the victim may need to report the theft to the police, as well as spend time at the local Consulate or Embassy so that they can be issued with an emergency travel document (ETD). The cost of ETDs and new passports for two adults could pay for two additional nights in a mid-range hotel and two meals a day in Tenerife.** Consulates around the world issued over 30,000 ETDs last year, and assisted distressed British nationals who had been victims of crime.

For the second year runing, the FCO has produced a series of short films with fraud and stealth crime expert James Freedman in order to r a i s e

“While we should all enjoy our holidays, it is important that we remain vigilant about valuables – particularly passports. Becoming a victim of theft or losing your passport could ruin your trip and replacing a passport will cost money and valuable holiday time. “By following the simple tips included in these videos you can minimise the risk of falling victim to thieves while abroad.” James Freedman, stealth crime expert, said: “With identity theft on the rise, the actual cost of losing your passport could be

awareness of passport hustling techniques and to educate the public on how to avoid this crime. These videos show a further four techniques that thieves use to steal passports as well as tips to avoid being a victim. Tobias Ellwood MP, Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister, said:

thousands of pounds. Criminals and con-men are always evolving the tricks they use to target tourists, but a few simple precautions will really help you to stay safe.” “Only carry what you really need and keep cash and other valuables in a secure pocket or bag. Remember that if you put bags down, they should always be in your line of sight. If you don’t need your passport and other valuables when you’re out and about, leave them at the hotel. Above all, trust your instincts and be aware of anyone invading your personal space.” There are many other ways

in which thieves can target your passports and valuables, and in addition to pickpockets, many Consulates worldwide have seen a rise in cases of items being taken from hire cars, such as the couple who had their passports stolen while celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with a trip to the South of Spain and were so upset that they decided to cut their holiday short. Thieves anticipate items of value such as passports being left in hire cars, so don’t take any chances. The FCO’s top tips for keeping your passport safe: · Be aware of your surroundings and be wary of strangers who take an unusual amount of interest in you. · A damaged passport cannot be used for travel, so value it and keep it safe · Lock your passport in a safe if you have access to one, or if you are required to keep it with you, ensure its location is not visible · Make two photocopies of your passport – leave one with friends or family and take the second with you, or store an electronic copy securely. Where permitted, use your photocopy as alternative ID, for example when going out at night · For certain countries your passport must be valid for 6 months after the date you travel – check the entry requirements before you go · Ensure you fill in the emergency details / next of kin page before you go The videos can be viewed on the FCO Travel Facebook, Twitter and YouTube feeds.

Calls For Benidorm Sand Sculptures To Be Returned

By Spencer WIlliams

Residents and tourists have all been scratching their heads…where are the infamous sand sculptures normally seen along Benidorm’s Levante. The town hall is facing backlash with the opposing party recently voted out criticizing the new government of the decision to not award the permits to the artisits who make the sculptures. It has also been a huge conversation amongst residents and tourists on social media with no one understanding the decision. The town hall’s decision to not allow the artists on the beaches were said to be down to that they were not an important part of Benidorms tourism. Councillor Lorenzo Martinez confirmed that his department had not requested the necessary permit from the Coastal Authorities for using the sand this year. “When we took over at the town hall we came to the conclusion that sand sculptures are not a necessary activity amongst all those that we offer on our beaches,” he explained.

The PSOE party says that it makes no sense as the artists were to pay 2000 euros to be able to create the sculptures. Martinez repeated that the veto remains in place, but further along in Campello the town

hall still allows Gabriel Istrate to shape elaborate designs that take him three days to complete. He has been coming for three summers and said he makes around €70 a week in tips.

The Star Of India Highly Recommended By The Buzz Team Authentic Indian cuisine arrives in Albir, situated apposite the Albir Playa Hotel on the roundabout as you drive into Albir from the N332. Indian food has always been a British favourite and is becoming ever more popular with the Spanish. The owner Sunil Singh has already been recognised for the quality of food served at his restaurant in Campello the Star of India and his expertise is now extended to Albir. The restaurateur is well-known all over the Alicante region, so I asked Sunil why his restaurant in Campello had been so successful. He told me that it was different to the standard of others and combined the best ingredients with quality curry spices providing authentic tastes and great service.

For me it had to be one of my favourite curries, which is a chicken Rogan Josh served with garlic Nan together with spinach with cheese (Palak Paneer). The whole experience of dining out is actually enjoying the meal in surroundings that offer the ambiance and the pleasure that compliment the authentic hospitality that is all part of the offering at the Star of Indian II. Arriving at the restaurant you can immediately smell the amazing aromas coming from the busy kitchen together with the stylish table layout, you simply can’t wait to start the evening and how better than having a nice cool beer. Specsavers Opticas Recommend Yearly Eye Tests for the Over 70s As we age, our eyes undergo many changes and most people require glasses in their later years. While some changes are perfectly natural and nothing to worry about, older eyes are also more susceptible to certain issues, which if left undiagnosed and untreated can lead to irreversible damage and sometimes total vision loss. For this reason, Specsavers Opticas are advising that all people over 70 should have an eye test at least once a year. Louise Stone, Store Director of Specsavers Opticas in Javea and Calpe explains “It can be easy to forget about getting your eyes tested and only react when you notice that your vision is bad. However, when you reach your 70s there are a number of conditions which can threaten your vision if not caught early and have few noticeable symptoms before they reach an advanced stage. We are urging that those over 70 make it part of their routine to schedule a regular eye test and make sure that their optician is offering a thorough check which includes checking the back of the eye.” You should get a thorough eye tests that provides professional, comprehensive checks of your eyes and vision. Your optician will answer any questions and address any specific problems you may be having with your vision. If necessary, the optician will refer you directly for further medical examination to an Ophthalmologist. Specsavers Opticas have brought UK standard eye tests to Spain to make sure that issues are identified early and offer 25% discount on glasses from their 89€ range or above for the over 50s.

Common problems for the over 70s These are the issues you should watch out for when you reach your 70s. Cataracts - The lens becomes opaque, blurring vision and even leading to loss of sight if left untreated. Early on, the condition may cause near-sightedness and the reduction in perception of blue colours. Glaucoma - A build-up of fluid within the eye can increase pressure, which in turn damages the optic nerve. The loss of visual field often occurs gradually and slowly, and may be recognised by the sufferer only when at an advanced stage. This loss of vision can never be recovered, so prompt diagnosis is essential. Macular degeneration - In older people, the macula – the centre of the retina which is used for detailed vision – thins and occasionally bleeds. This can lead to distortion of, or even the loss of, central vision. The sufferer may also have trouble discerning colours. Peripheral vision remains unaffected, but central vision loss is serious, so early diagnosis and treatment is vital. All these problems can be easily diagnosed with an eye test, so Specsavers Opticas urges all people over 70 to make sure they go for an eye test on an annual basis to make sure their eyes are healthy and any problems can be treated before causing vision loss. Specsavers in Calpe, Javea, Benidorm, Torrevieja and Guardamar offer UK standard free eye tests with all glasses purchased. Treating Cats with Fur Balls what can be done to prevent them becoming a problem. Sometimes cats who suffer from furballs may eat grass and garden plants to try and medicate themselves. Grass causes them to vomit, which may also bring up the fur ball as well. Thus, if you see your cat eating grass, this may be an early indication that they are suffering from fur balls. One thing owners can do to help prevent fur balls is regular combing of their cat’s hair. This will get rid of much of the dead hair before it can be ingested. Fine-toothed combs are best for short haired cats, while wide-toothed combs tend to be more suitable for long haired cats. It’s not advisable to use brushes, because they are much less effective at getting all the loose hair out.

One of the wonderful things we all love about cats is their soft, delicate fur. When they ingest dead, loose hairs in the process of grooming, what usually happens is that they pass through the digestive system without any problems. However, if too much hair builds up in the stomach, it causes irritation of the stomach lining, and this when a furball will be produced. Fur balls can be a recurrent problem for cats, particularly those from long-haired breeds. It is an unpleasant experience for cats, and symptoms generally include vomiting, unproductive retching, constipation and a loss of appetite. This article looks at how cats suffering from fur balls can be treated, and One of the traditional remedies for furballs is petroleum jelly. A small amount is applied to a cat’s paw, so the cat can lick it up. The molecules of petroleum jelly are too large to be absorbed, so they retain their form and act as a lubricant to help the ingested hair through the cat’s digestive system and out in the normal way. There are varieties of petroleum jelly in different flavours (such as tuna) which are designed especially for cats. These will make the jelly more palatable to cats, so are a good option if your cat shows reluctance towards this treatment. Another common treatment for the condition is natural herb tablets. These tablets are a mixture of herbs including valerian root, dandelion root, and senna leaf, powdered and pressed into tablet form. It works as a gentle laxative, so it is generally given for the relief of constipation or to help treat cats suffering from furballing. It is recommended that cats who are experiencing noticeable discomfort because of furballs are given one of these tablets daily. In addition, it is also a good idea to give cats who are prone to fur balls one tablet a day during their moulting period. The one caveat to bear in mind when giving herbal treatments such as these is that they are not suitable for pregnant or lactating females. Once cats get rid of their furballs, they normally recover quickly, and are soon back to normal. However, it is important to be aware that your cat may be suffering from dehydration because of the vomiting, and may need a special diet for a few days. Alicante City

Alicante past present and future. Different civilizations have passed through these lands, leaving their mark which can be seen in all corners of this emblematic city. All of this adds to the appeal of this modern city with a primary focus on tourism, but also a special interest in industry and commerce. Alicante, situated on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, offers not only a great variety of services but also a wide range of cultural activities, with its museums, its festivals and its nature areas, in particular the Island of Tabarca (Mediterranean Marine Reserve). Alicante’s well-known climate and beaches make this a perfect city for spending a few pleasantly relaxing days away from it all.

Central Market

This building contains some modernist features and was built between 1911 and 1912 under the management of Juan Vidal Ramos over Balmes Square, over which there was still a part of the 18th century wall. With its rectangular shape, the Market mimics the layout of a basilica, with a circular appendix on the Southwest side covered by a semispherical dome called La Rotonda (the roundabout). The building is split into two floors, one of which is a semi-basement due to the irregular surrounding streets.

The front of the building was designed by Enrique Sánchez Sedeño and is presided by an impressive staircase surrounded by two emerging figures with decorative features. On 25th May 1938, the Mercado Central was hit during the worst bombing suffered by the city of Alicante during the Spanish Civil War, which resulted in 300 civilian victims. The Italian air force was responsible for that tragedy. All kinds of high-quality products can be bought at the Market, especially local fish and seafood, vegetables and fruit, as well as other typical local products. That is why the city’s top restaurants source their food from the Mercado Central.

profile on the south western slope, known as the Moor’s Face, which is best viewed from Postiguet Beach. The Museum of the city in Santa Barbara´s Castle “MUSA”, housed in the Castle itself, was included to this cultural offer and it explains in five theme rooms the history of the city of Alicante and their inhabitants. To descend down from the Santa Bárbara Castle take the route through Parque de La Ereta, along the mountainside. Its location and views trans-

17

Visitors can also access the castle via a lift built within the rockface opposite El Postiguet beach.

Tabarca Island

A visit to Tabarca island is an absolute must for visitors. Boats from the company Kontiki depart from the marina in Alicante several times a day during the summer months. In low seasons confirm timetables beforehand.

Santa Barbara Castle

visit to the Santa Bárbara Castle is highly recommended. Located atop Mount Benacantil, at a height of 166 metres, it is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain, with unbeatable views over the Bay of Alicante and on clear days you can see all the way to Tabarca Island. Such is its importance that during the 20th century it was declared a Monument of Historic and Artistic Importance and a Site of Cultural Interest. Here we can also find one of the most characteristic images of the city, a rock formation resembling a man’s

form it into a place of relaxation as well as a great meeting place. It also has a spectacular restaurant and, on the way down to the old town quarter, you can visit the picturesque, quintessentially Spanish Santa Cruz district. Another attractive option between the castle and the Santa Cruz district is walking along the remains of the walls that surrounded the Castle, which now end in the Santa Cruz district.

The journey takes around one hour from Alicante. The route will give you the opportunity to enjoy the coastline. Try one of the traditional fish stews on the terrace of one of the restaurants. Also, on the island, you will find nice little bays to swim in as well as a beach offering different facilities. If you decide to stay overnight on the island, there are also little hotels peppered along it.

THE FACTS ABOUT INSTALLING A SOLAR ENERGY GRID-CONNECTED ELECTRICITY SYSTEM What happens to the electricity that is produced but not used? We can install equipment in your property that ensures 100% of your solar energy production is consumed at the property. This maximises the financial return of your solar installation. If you decide you want to export electricity Iberdrola will buy back any solar electricity that is sent back to the grid.

Electricity bills have increased by an average of 20% each year over the past 5 years and the cost is likely to increase by similar amounts over the next few years.

Do I have to pay tax to the Government if I install a system?

Do I need permission from my utility company to install a system in my property? Yes you do. This is very important and must not be overlooked. Permissions need to be obtained before the installation takes place. Every grid-connected electricity system needs authorisation from your electricity supplier and the Spanish Government. Iberdrola is currently issuing fines for unauthorised installations so it is very important that your installation is completed correctly.

What is the life expectancy of a solar grid-connected electricity system? A well designed solar system will easily last for 25-30 years. Both the solar panels and the inverters used by Solar in Spain are guaranteed for 25 years. Only the very best quality

equipment will cope with the harsh environment.

Does solar energy only work on sunny days?

No. Solar panels do not need direct sunlight to work – they can still generate electricity on cloudy days. However, the stronger the sunshine the more electricity is produced.

In 2013 the government published a draft proposal which proposed a tax on electricity. This draft proposal was against European Union directives and was met with enormous opposition. On 9th October 2015 the Spanish Government updated this draft proposal stating that grid connected solar installations that produce less than 10kW per hour will not be taxed. This is excellent news for home owners as it has removed the threat of any type of solar tax.

Bankinter Forecasts Rise in Property Prices As we all are well aware, the property market in Spain is in a phase of recovery. Investing in real estate in this country has even become attractive for investors once more. Many experts in various fields directly or indirectly linked to the property market are keeping a close eye on what’s happening with prices and sales in various parts of the country and as a whole. Bankinter, one of the banks in Spain that was least affected by the property crisis, has calculated that house prices will moderately rise all across the peninsula and on the islands as well.

The recuperation of property prices began in the cities of Madrid and Barcelona and then extended to other major cities in Spain. According to data published by the Department of Public Works, house prices have gone up by approximately 2.4% between March 2015 and March 2016. The regions in which prices increased the most during this time are: Balearic Islands (9.6%), Catalonia (4.9%) and Madrid (4.2%). House prices have only dropped in the following regions from last year: AragĂłn (-0.6%), Cantabria (-1.3%),

the Basque Country (-1.9%), La Rioja (-2.1%) and Ceuta and Melilla (-0.3%). On a national scale, house prices have continued to rise since the end of 2014, and this has been speeding up since the beginning of this year. In its biannual report on the property market in Spain, Bankinter has forecast that the demand for residential property will increase over the next 18 months, to reach a volume of 470,000 sales a year in 2017. This is great news for anyone wishing to sell. We have already seen that the time it takes to sell a property in many areas is being reduced by around half.

And it is all being helped along by an improvement in the economy, low interest rates and good yields from renting property. Bankinter has calculated that house prices should go up by around 3-5% annually as a result of the renewed demand for property and lack of new builds in popular parts of the big cities. Due to this shortage of new property, the number of licences approved for new constructions has begun to rise as well, which is a positive sign for the construction sector.

Spain Is the Seventh Destination Most Favoured by the Chinese to Buy Property According to the largest property portal in China, Juwai, Spain is one of the most popular destinations in the world for the middle-class Chinese to buy property and invest their money.

comeback and Chinese investors are carrying out numerous searches into Spanish apartments, offices and hotels. However, while it all looks great on paper, in reality the figures don’t add up. In the ranking of foreign nationalities that purchase the most amount of property in Spain, China is currently situated in seventh position, behind the UK, France, Germany, Sweden, Belgium and Italy. They make up 4% of all foreign house purchases, which is just 0.53% of all property purchases in the country.

When analysing searches carried out on the Internet, Spain is the seventh most favoured destination after the United States, Australia, Canada, the UK, Thailand and New Zealand. They are most attracted to the regions of Madrid and Barcelona, as well as others including Valencia, Alicante and Marbella for their tourist pull and competitive prices. Over the last few years, interest from Chinese prospective buyers had died down from what it like before, but recent analysis has shown that consultations about the Spanish property market have rocketed 80% in the last year. In addition, this interest seems to be growing rapidly due to the excellent investment opportunities on offer and the fact that the Chinese are more informed about

how things are carried out in this country, culture and life in general. Many investors are aware that with house prices as low as they are now but with the cycle moving in a positive and rising direction, investing into Spanish real estate could bring profits within less than 10 years. And many are still taking advantage of the “Golden Visa, which allows non-

EU nationals to gain a residency permit in Spain if they purchase a property valued at half a million euro or more. Although countries such as the USA, Canada and Australia are higher up in the ranking of countries preferred by Chinese investors, it is much harder to enter these markets due to harsh immigration policies. For this reason, Spain is making a

Number of Mortgages Granted Rises 34% Annually The number of mortgages being taken out and granted by the banks has been consistently rising for the past two years. According to the latest figures released by the National Statistics Institute (INE), the number of mortgages granted in May this year saw the figure increase by a massive 34.1% annually, which is the biggest jump for the previous 12 months experienced all year. During the fifth month of 2016, a total of 26,579 new mortgages were registered. This volume hasn’t been seen since 2012. In addition, the total amount of money borrowed also increased 33.1% from last year, although the average amount taken out per loan decreased 0.8% to 104,480 euro. From January to May this year, a total of 121,331 mortgages have been signed. This is also more than last

year – 19.7% more. Just over 80% of mortgages taken out in May were of a variable rate, while 20% were fixed. The average interest rate was fixed at 3.19%, which is 6.1% lower than in May 2015. Regarding autonomous regions, the greatest number of mortgages were taken out in Andalucia (4,916), followed by Cataluña (4,495) and Madrid (4,366).

At the same time, the regions with the greatest increase in the number of mortgages taken out from last year are the Balearic Islands (66.9%), the Basque Country (51.6%) and Castilla-La Mancha (47.7%).

However, banks are still in the process of cancelling and large number of mortgages, as many as they are granting new ones. This means that there is still a lot of competition between them to capture new clients, and interest rates continue to fall as a result.

Business Feature

A greater number of clients are opting for fixed mortgage rates, showing that they are still wary of the market, although banks are making this option very attractive to them and a much safer choice.

Why is Everyone Talking About ‘Pension Freedoms’? More than 50% of my dayto-day work here on the Costa Blanca involves administering and advising on pensions. Sweeping pension reforms in the UK over the last 10 years allow 100,000s of expats a whole host of new options. These have the potential to not only increase your retirement income, but allow for earlier access, flexible drawdown, and substantially increased benefits to heirs upon death. You may also wish to consolidate existing pensions into a single scheme and take full control of your pension rights in retirement. This article intends to demystify the whole process and encourage even more of you to explore your pension options and enjoy the benefits that over 10,000 expats each year take advantage of. There

are

3

main

stages

involved in having your full pension freedoms explored. Stage 1 is the valuation, which involves completing a 2-minute form called a Letter of Authority or ‘LOA’. An LOA gives your financial advisor permission to contact your pension schemes and obtain a valuation and breakdown of options. Crucially, it does not grant your advisor any authority to make changes to your current arrangements, simply to gather information. Stage 2 is where your financial advisor will talk you through your current benefits, and then explore what options you have available as a result of new pension freedoms. We would only move clients to Stage 3 if we are satisfied that making changes to a client’s current pension benefits would be to their advantage and in line with

their retirement needs. Let’s have a look at a recent situation where that was the case. We’ll call this client Sarah, although I have changed her name for confidentiality. Sarah attended a seminar I ran in Albir earlier this year. At the end of the seminar a number of people asked to complete an LOA and obtain valuations for their pensions. I then asked Sarah if she had any pensions she wanted help with and she said she wasn’t aware of having any. I asked if she’d worked for any UK companies before she moved to Spain, to which she replied that she had worked for HSBC in her 20s but was sure she didn’t have any pension benefits. Having obtained numerous valuations for UK High Street banks I was pretty sure she would have something there, so convinced her to complete a form just in case. 3 weeks later I received the valuation back from HSBC and booked an appointment to see Sarah. I explained to her that she did indeed have an HSBC Final Salary pension and that it would be worth £3,600 a year to her at 65. We then discussed the options that UK pension freedoms offered, such as the opportunity to accept what is known as a Cash Equivalent Transfer Value (CETV) rather than an annual pension. This would be a lump sum of money that she could transfer into a private scheme in place of an annual final salary pension. Rather than having to wait until she was 65, she could access this money with full flexibility at 55 according to HMRC rules. Sarah’s CETV was £126,000! This meant that rather than having £3,600 per year at 65, Sarah, who is currently 44, could have flexible access to £126,000 at just 55. As this money would need to be transferred to another HMRC recognised pension scheme, it would be subject to investment growth. If the new scheme made net returns of 5% per year her retirement pot would be worth £215,000 on her 55th birthday. Yet another advantage of the new arrangement is that if she passes

away before her husband, rather than him inheriting a 50% spouse’s pension, leaving nothing for her children, her entire pension pot would pass to both her husband and children. So Sarah went from being convinced she had no pension to having a potential pot of £215,000 at age 55. This is just one example of why I always recommend that expats have their pension options explored. If anyone would like to complete a pension valuation request form please email me today on s.kelly@tourbillonlimited.com or call me direct on 664 398 702. I can send the form by email and there’s no obligation for you to do anything once we get your valuations back. BREXIT UPDATES

Brexit Will Not Damage Tourism But Will Have An Effect On New Residents Arriving The survey for the Valencia Community was drawn up by the Chair of Studies in Alicante University, Pedro Zaragoza and the sociologist Tomás Mazón. The specialist signalled an adjustment must be made, to not always a negative situation, above all on the Costa Blanca ‘where a series of situations are in their favour’. Among them, said Mazón, the British will continue to search for sun in their holidays and the Costa Blanca will remain one of the most attractive for being cheaper than others, such as the French Riviera, and for having a greater hotel capacity than other tourism destinations, such as Croatia, Corfu and Malta, where there is no more room for growth. In addition, the northern coast of Africa is neither a competitor because of the political instability. Mazón assured the British value the modernity of Spain, above all the hotels and good infrastructure, and especially the quality of the health service. ‘Where will the tourist go now? There are not many places, and the modernity and security of Spain makes it an agreeable place’, said Pedro Zaragoza. Regarding the British who choose

Spain to purchase a home; Alicante is the province with the largest British colony (72,935 on Jan 1 2016). Mazón said here the situation is different, given the depreciation of the pound against the euro when considering purchasing an apartment or bungalow.

The shopping basket will also be more expensive, and here there is the possibility (still pending under the negotiations between the European Union and the United Kingdom) on access to the free Spanish health service, which will now still have to be calculated.

‘When buying property is going to be more expensive and, in addition, if public medical assistance is removed’ this would provoke ‘before buying Spanish property a greater consideration on the amount of purchasing power will be needed’

Petrol Prices Rise After Six Weeks in Descent

According to data published by the EU Petrol Bulletin, the average prices of both petrol and diesel have gone up in the last week, by 0.9% and 0.7% respectively. This is after we have enjoyed relatively low fuel prices throughout the summer, with the price of diesel falling for the previous five weeks and the price of petrol for the last six. For the first time in a month and a half, a litre of diesel now costs more than 1 euro. It is now priced at 1,003 euro a litre, when last week it registered at 0,996 euro per litre. This is a rise of 0.76% in just seven days. Nevertheless, the good news is that the cost of filling up your vehicle with diesel is 8.4% cheaper than it was 12 months ago, although it is still 10.3% more expensive than in January this year, when a minimum of 0,909 euro/litre was recorded. With regards to petrol, the second favoured fuel

by Spanish motorists, a litre now costs 1,132 euro, which is 0.88% more than the 1,122 euro/litre recorded a week ago. This year, the minimum price for petrol was recorded in March, at 1,065 euro a litre, and since then it has risen 6.3%. Despite this, the average price for petrol is 9.6% less than it was 12 months ago. With current prices, it will cost 62,3 euro to fill up a car with a 55-litre tank, and 55,16 euro to fill up the same sized tank with diesel. This rise in petrol prices in Spain coincides with the increase in the price of crude Brent oil, which went up to 50 dollars a barrel from 43 dollars. But, fuel prices are still much cheaper in this country than in other parts of Europe. The average price of petrol in the EU currently sits at 1,269 euro a litre and at 1,306 euro a litre in the euro zone.

Jaguar F-Pace 2016 The F-Pace is Jaguar’s first ever SUV but there’s more to this than meets the eye. For starters - and quite surprisingly - it’s not based on a Land Rover. Instead Jaguar has developed the F-Pace itself using its own lightweight aluminium structure - the same that’s used for the XE and XF. Of course it does share some things with Land Rover. It’s engines being the main ones. The most popular F-Pace is the

20d which uses the same Ingenium diesel engine as the Land Rover Discovery Sport. Surprisingly for this size of car, it comes with a manual gearbox and the cheapest version is two-wheel drive and around £35k. However, the F-Pace is far better with an automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive, with official economy only suffering slightly at 53mpg. The 20d engine has decent power, although it does lack the effortless in

gear power of the 30d and as a result can feel strained at times. But then it’s far cheaper to buy and run. The F-Pace is competitive in terms of price with rivals like the Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC but offers more interior space. That means a big boot and enough width for three to sit pretty comfortably in the back, albeit with a wide transmission tunnel. The F-Pace really excels is when it comes to handling. It matches the excellent Porsche Macan for cornering prowess and feels more like a sports saloon than a big SUV, with surprising agility. And that’s not at the cost of ride comfort either, the

F-Pace is very smooth and refined on the motorway with very little noise. Interior build quality is very good, as we’ve come to expect from Jaguar, although the design does feel a little ordinary when compared to something like the GLC. What is much improved is the touchscreen system. Gone is the grainy display and clunky operation of older Jaguars, replaced by a far superior system that’s simple to use. There’s plenty to like about the F-Pace, not least its imposing styling and refined nature. The 20d is decent enough but doesn’t really sparkle, however the Jaguar makes up for that with very keen handling and a comfortable ride. But what will attract most people is the value for money it offers along with low running costs. It makes the F-Pace an incredibly attractive SUV.

This Week In N332 Torrevieja to Finally Get Widened Automotive History

IT’S BEEN a long process but finally the bottleneck on the N332 through Torrevieja is close to being resolved. Last week the City received the official protocols necessary and the required budget to put the project out to tender in a few months time. The project was left uncompleted by Zapatero’s PSOE Coalition Government in 2011 although the correct protocols were also in place at that time. The total cost of this new scheme will be about 32 million euros with an initial budget of fifteen million to start the project as soon as possible. The torrevejense City Council already has in its possession the draft protocol of cooperation between the Ministry of Development, the Government and the Consistory to execute the widening of the N332 passing through the city, to complete the dual carriageway between the towns of Guardamar del Segura and Pilar de la Horadada.

Councillor for Town Planning, Francisco Moreno, confirmed the project and noted that during the first weeks the required papers will be signed between the Ministry of Development and Councillor for Infrastructure, Isabel Bonig, and Torrevieja Mayor Eduardo Dolon. Torrevieja is ready to offer 90% of the required space, which is already owned by the city. Ten percent of the remaining land that cannot yet be offered by the city of Torrevieja will have to be expropriated. The work, which is also expected to include two major roundabouts, runs between kilometre 53.6 and 61.4, totalling nearly eight kilometres and joining the hamlet of La Mata to the Orihuela Costa at Punta Prima. As noted by the council, currently the State Budget has set aside 15 million euros to start the development and purchase the remaining 10% of lands, with the overall cost amounting to

This week in 1903 the first fully recorded transcontinental journey in an automobile came to an end when test driver E.T. (Tom) Fetch concluded his journey from New York City to San Francisco in a 1902 Packard Model F. Fetch was hired by Packard investor Henry Joy to complete the journey to prove that American-made cars could “negotiate the all but impassible mountain and desert roads and trails of the Far West.” The trip took him 63 days. The car left New York on June 20, stripped of its fenders, outfitted with extra gas tanks and had an additional low gear installed for crawling up mountains. The car also carried a pick, shovel, canvas and chains to get the car through the rough terrain. All loaded up the vehicle weighed 3,000 pounds. The car was dubbed “Old Pacific.” The car traversed the Rockies into Denver before moving westward onto San Francisco. The trip was full of publicity stops all along the way. When addressing the crowd in SF after his arrival the first thing Fetch had to say was “Thank God, it’s over.” Photo: Tom Fetch in the 1902 Packard during the 1903 Packard Transcontinental Tour - courtesy Detroit Public Library.

Houses Evacuate After Fire Breaks Out In Nova Javea By Javeamigos

One of the biggest fears of these hot and dry summer months occurred on Tuesday evening when smoke was spotted rising from behind the hillock of Santa Llúcia. The blaze was reported at 4.45pm in the vicinity of Calle Lastres in Urbanisation Nova Xàbia and forced the evacuation of 14 houses in the area, some 45 people in total, essentially as a precaution although it was later reported that one house was completely destroyed along with two vehicles. The fire, which ultimately destroyed some two hectares, was attended by fire-fighting assets from the Bomberos, volunteers from the Protección Civil and ISVH Bomberos Balcón al Mar, Policía Local, Guardia Civil and Forestry Brigades whilst traffic was diverted from the immediate area to ensure a quick response from emergency services. The traffic chaos was compounded by an accident in Camí Castellans experienced by a 60-yearold German national who

suffered an apparent heart attack and was rushed to the local hospital. In the air, two helicopters and four planes dropped water onto the inferno in an attempt to contain it, burning just a few metres away from houses and the vulnerable Parque Natural del Montgó. By 7.00pm much of the air support had been withdrawn whilst crews on the ground worked on damping down the affected area in Calle Lastres and by 7.15pm it was declared as being “stabilised”. One of the key factors that prevented the fire from spreading was the great coordination between the assets working hard to extinguish the blaze. Following the task from the command post was mayor José Chulvi and his counterpart from Dénia Vicent Grimalt as well as councillors José Luis Luengo (Protección Civil) and Pepa Gisbert (Public Safety). Rain showers on Wednesday morning will have helped continue to make the area safe.

Calle La Caleta Extension Work Complete Work has concluded on the extension and improvement work of Calle La Caleta in the port. The Ayuntamiento de Xàbia has accepted the renovation of the street which has not only seen its

expansion to create more parking but also saw the renovation of the pavements, the drainage network and public lighting. Mayor José Chulvi and councillor Paco Torres (Urban) inspected the road that provides access

to the port from Calle Cuesta de San Antonio and the work that has made an obvious improvement in both image and safety for both drivers and pedestrians. The Ayuntamiento has invested some 270,000 euros into

the project which has complemented previous work to divert and cover the ravine of San Antonio which was completed to resolve an issue with channelling rain water away from the area.

Choir Recruiting New Singers The increasingly popular Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir, is about to start its new season and is seeking new members for all sections. The choir, which has over 50 members, has six concerts planned in the runup to Christmas and the highlight of our summer programme is a visit from the internationally-acclaimed Pontarddulais Male Choir from Wales. Earlier this year, the Costa Blanca boys took part in the Costa Brava Music Festival in Lloret de Mar and

performed in a joint concert in Teulada with the Basingstoke Ladies Choir from the UK. The choir sings a wide range of music from popular songs such as ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ and ‘California Dreamin’ to traditional choral works which are favourites with our followers. The choir rehearses once a week at Bar Mediterraneo in Teulada from 6 8pm and anyone who may interested is welcome to come along to the first

in Castellans, Javea, where a man with no heartbeat was successfully treated, his heart function restored with the defibrillator and who is now happily recuperating in Denia Hospital. A great example of why our work and donations, along with those of our Brothers, friends and members of the public are so very important. We don’t usually see them in action quite so quickly but I am sure the gentleman in question was extremely grateful for our help in contributing this very valuable equipment. Should you be interested in donating or would like to know a little more about the role of the Masons, please feel free

to contact me on the email address given below, where I would be delighted to answer your questions. prensa@glpvalencia.com WBro William Turney Press Officer

Stolen Car Gang Taken Down in the Vega Baja

By David Rogers

The Guardia Civil and Europol have taken down an organised gang dedicated to stealing Land Cruiser vehicles to sell them on in Lithuania. They operated from their base in Guardamar del Segura and Pilar de la Horadada and the value of the stolen vehicles amounted to €430,000. The suspects are 11 Lithuanians aged between 28 and 63. Six of them have been arrested by the Guardia Civil and five of these have been sent to prison but the operation is still open and more arrests could be made. The Guardia Civil had been on the trail of this organisation for months, which moved all over the country, especially Alicante, Murcia and Madrid.

First they would steal Land Cruisers’ papers in a way that the owners would think they had lost them so they did not report them stolen. Then they would steal the same model of vehicle and remove the chassis number and destroy the number plates, then make fake ones to coincide with the stolen papers. In this way they tried to make the vehicles go unnoticed in Spain until they reached Lithuania. The gang’s movements were also detected in Germany and Poland, as well as Lithuania where the vehicles ended up, which is why Europol were needed to connect this gang with other European criminal gangs. So far 14 stolen vehicles have been recovered.

Algorfa Opens New Playground Sewage Spill Council had it built in response to demands from residents

By Spencer WIlliams

Algorfa has opened a new children’s playground in the Plaza de España, something which residents have been demanding and was paid for with a €35,000 grant from the Alicante Provincial Council. Mayor Miguel Ros cut the ribbon to inaugurate the park in front of hundreds of children and

parents. He said they have tried to make a playground suitable for older and younger children, as there was only one in the municipality and it is a long way from the centre of the village. Since there are various bars and cafes around the plaza, parents can now relax with somewhere to take their children, he said. “The last council had wanted to put in a roller skating

park instead but we changed it because there wasn’t one here and it was something people were asking for,” added Deputy Mayor Fabián Rico. The theme of the park is wild animals and the jungle and there are lots of bright colours like yellow, red and green. The inauguration was very busy and there were activities including face painting, music and games.

on Torre de la Horadada

By Spencer WIlliams

At about 8pm on Thursday, August 18th a sewage pipe burst in the Pilar district of Torre de la Horadada, causing a spillage by Playa de las Higuericas. This could have been caused by the sewage network becoming overloaded from the surge in population over the summer. After it was reported to the Local Police, municipal technicians visited the site and coordinated the different departments and contractors required under the Beaches Emergency Plan. Amongst the measures taken was the order to build a containing wall on Avenida Europa and

cordon off the area. The municipal water service company Acciona and the works and services department pumped the waste water into the sewage network. The beach cleaning service was also notified to remove the sand and clean the area, as well as the lifeguards to hoist the red flag. Two areas were closed and swimming was prohibited, one of 30 metres at the end of the Rambla and another of 20 metres at the end of Calle Alheli. Lastly, as a security precaution before reopening the beach to swimming, first thing this morning Environmental Technicians took samples of the seawater on the beach for testing.

Ombudsman Asks Orihuela to Revise Costa Bar Licence By David Rogers

The Valencian Ombudsman has recommended that Orihuela Town Hall revise the opening licence of Passion Dance Club in Villamartín in Orihuela Costa, after residents complained about “the insufferable disturbances they suffer as a result of the disco’s musical activity”. The community of owners where the venue is located assure they have complained on numerous occasions to the Town Hall about “the annoying, unhealthy, noisy and unsafe activities,

especially the unneighbourly behaviour that results from the venue’s licence”. They also claim the venue has repeatedly failed to comply with standards for soundproofing and security. For this reason, the Ombudsman has called on the Town Hall to “take all legal measures necessary to stop the noise problems”, and noted the residents also claim it does not comply with the permitted uses of the current General Urban Layout Plan or municipal by laws.

Keeping Beaches Clean By Spencer Williams

By Spencer Williams

Alfaz del Pi town hall, has intensified its ECOL’ALFÀS campaign efforts, with the upkeep and cleanliness of the municipality focusing on the beach of l’Albir during the busiest time of the year. In a continued effort to keep the beaches clean they are providing beach goers ‘conoceniceros’ (Coned Ashtrays) to help reduce the number of cigarette buts left by visitors. This campaign, which has been divided into different phases with different objectives and that began last June with an action intended to raise awareness of the importance of selective waste collection and, at the same time inform neighbours of Alfaz del Pi and Albir on the proper use of the containers and clean municipalities. Dolores Albero, health councillor of the municipality of Alfaz del Pi, explains “our cleaning services and maintenance of the beach do a great job and we are fortunate to have one of the cleanest coasts of Spain, such and as evidenced by 30 consecutive blue flags that we have achieved, but we believe that we must achieve higher levels of excellence and therefore we have started this new phase aimed at reducing as much as possible the number of cigarette butts are left on the beach season. To do this, we are dealing in these days of summer thousand ‘conoceniceros’ among

swimmers so they can throw their butts without dirtying the beach. “ Albero recalled that “the total cost of the campaign ECOL’ALFÀS amounts to 13,000 euros, with this budget, we have also targeted dog owners promoting the collection of droppings.

Armenello Occupants Operate Illegal Car Park

By Spencer Williams

The Socialist party of Benidorm City Council today denounced the operation of an illegal car park in the area of Armanello, opposite the football pitches. The car park has been guarded by residents of occupied homes in the derelict area. Socialist spokesman, Ruben Martinez, has stated that “many neighbors warned us yesterday the clearing of a plot next to the outdoor market” and “today were asking

people for money to park in this area “It’s a real shame,” he blurted. The area has been under fire for years with the town hall attempting to have the area cleared, but the residents refrain from moving and are often related to illegal activities throughout the resort such as pickpocketing, clipboard scams and the shell game (Pea Men). We advise any people staying or visiting Benidorm do not use the illegal car park as it supports the illegal operation, the area may be convenient but there are other options that be an extra five minute walk but there are no guarantees that your property or vehicle will be safe,

Sam Allardyce Considers John Terry England manager Sam Allardyce has said he may consider holding talks with defender John Terry on a possible return to international football, but added he was not aware of the “political” issues that may arise as a consequence. Terry won the last of his 78 England caps in 2012, before quitting the national team after the Football Association pursued a case against him following

accusations of racially abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand. The Chelsea defender was subsequently banned for four matches by the FA, despite being cleared of the allegation in a London court. Allardyce did not rule out a return for the former England captain. “Maybe so. I think it depends on what John said. Maybe if I get the opportunity,

I might have to give him a ring,” he told British media. “But until I come to that selection or that process, we’ll wait and see. “I don’t know what the political side of that might mean, if there is a political side. I’ll have to have that conversation if I feel that John Terry may be a possibility.” Allardyce said John Stones will benefit from working under manager Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and the defender has a great opportunity to cement his place in England’s defence. “Potential is something that’s going to be great in the future. I want it right now and he’s (Stones) got a great chance of becoming it right now with working with Manchester City,” he added.

Allardyce will name his squad on Sunday for their first World Cup qualifier against Slovakia on Sept. 4.

Joe Hart’s nightmare could soon be over, after it was revealed that Barcelona goalkeeper Claudio Bravo could join Manchester City this week. The England international had been told by new boss Pep Guardiola on Friday that he could leave the club if he wished, something he is more than likely to do after the news of Bravo’s impending arrival. The Chilean international is due in Manchester for a medical on Thursday where he is also expected to finalise personal terms ahead of his move. Barcelona had revealed at the weekend that a deal in principle had been agreed with City for the sale of the 33-year old, with the transfer worth somewhere in the region of £17million. With Bravo now

on the verge of moving, and odds-on favourite to take the starting jersey at the Etihad, it raises questions over where Hart will play his football in the future, with the England stopper almost certain to leave before the transfer deadline. Hart had been City’s first choice goalkeeper since 2010 but, after a disappointing tournament at Euro 2016 in France, Guardiola dropped him for the first two games of the season in favour of backup keeper Willy Caballero. Guardiola expressed his dislike of Hart’s playing style, admitting he wanted his goalkeeper to play a key role in his team’s build-up play, something Hart is not used to.

Joshua to fight on November 26

Eddie Hearn has confirmed Anthony Joshua’s next fight will be on November 26, 2016. And the IBF world heavyweight champion will fight away from London’s O2 Arena for the first time in five bouts. Joshua revealed the date while at the Rio Olympics watching Joe Joyce claim silver in the superheavyweight final and Hearn confirmed to Sky Sports on Sunday: “November 26 is the date for your diary. We are changing city. The opponent and venue will be confirmed in the next few weeks.” Joshua successfully defended his IBF heavyweight belt in June with a seventh-round stoppage win over Dominic Breazeale, after which it was confirmed he would not fight again until the end of the year.

World heavyweight title challenger Dereck Chisora has confirmed he will return to action in Stockholm on September 10. The 32-year-old Londoner (25-6-KO17) last fought in May when he was outpointed by Kubrat Pulev (23-1-KO12) in Hamburg with the vacant European title on the line. Chisora, who has previously expressed a desire to take on domestic rivals such as world champion Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte, will now face Bosnia & Herzegovina’s Drazan Janjanin (13-7-KO12) as he looks to rebuild.

Conor McGregor Injury Suspension After Win Over Diaz

The Watford-born heavyweight’s opponent has not yet been decided but Hearn has been drawing up a list and in July he added the names of Kubrat Pulev Conor McGregor put his body through and Joseph Parker to Bermane Stiverne, a war on Saturday night to get a win over who has been training for a fight against Nate Diaz, but he may be forced to sit Anthony Joshua. on the sidelines to heal up now that the battle is over. McGregor arrived on crutches to speak with the media following his majority decision win over Diaz while stating that his shin was banged up after delivering a series of punishing leg kicks during the fight. Now according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, McGregor will required an orthopedist clear a left foot/ankle fracture before he’s allowed to return to competition or he will be medically suspended until Feb. 17, 2017. Whether McGregor’s foot and ankle are cleared or not, the Irishman will definitely be sitting out until Oct. 20 with no contact until at least Oct. 5. Obviously if McGregor is cleared by a physician, he’ll be allowed to return to action much sooner than Feb. 2017, but

the damage done in his last fight could keep him out of any proposed bout on the UFC 205 card in New York on Nov. 12. As for Diaz, he only suffered a laceration over his eyebrow that will keep him out of action until Sept. 20 with no contact until Sept. 11. Following a nasty 13-second knockout on Saturday night, Glover Teixeira has been suspended until at least Nov. 19 with no contact until Oct. 20. The only other lengthy suspensions from UFC 202 included Neil Magny, who must have his left leg x-rayed and if positive an orthopedist must clear him or face a suspension until Feb. 17, 2017 with a minimum suspension until Sept. 20 and no contact until Sept. 11. Artem Lobov will also need to have his right leg and ankle x-rayed following his win over Chris Avila. An orthopedist must clear him or he’s suspended until Feb. 17, 2017 as well.

Russia fail in appeal against exclusion from Rio Paralympics

Russia will not compete at next month’s Paralympic Games in Rio. An appeal to the Court for the Arbitration of Sport against the blanket ban imposed by the International Paralympic Committee in the wake of allegations of state-sponsored doping was rejected Tuesday to end any hope Russian Paralympians had of competing in Rio. A statement for CAS found that the IPC “did not violate any procedural rule in dealing with the with the disciplinary process” which led to the suspension of the Russian Paralympic committee. It added that the “decision to ban the RPC was made in accordance with the IPC rules and was proportionate in the circumstances.” Russia was banned on August 7 by the IPC before launching

an appeal. Upon announcing the ban earlier this month, committee president Philip Craven laid the blame on the Russian government. The IPC had sought more information from Richard McLaren, who led the independent report for the World Anti-Doping Agency which alleged wide scale doping which had allegedly been covered up by the country’s security services. Reacting to the verdict Tuesday, Craven said his organization was “greatly encouraged.” “Today’s decision underlines our strong belief that doping has absolutely no place in Paralympic sport, and further improves our ability to ensure fair competition and a level playing field for all Para athletes around the world,” he said in a statement.

Team GB Olympic Success 27

23

The Rio Olympics came to a close after the 16 day event with a fantastic celebration lasting 3 hours despite wind and rain. Team GB’s flagbearer was women’s hockey captain Kate Richardson-Walsh as Britain finished above China in the medal table behind the United States after a haul of 67 - their highest total on foreign soil - eclipsing the 47 medals won in Beijing in 2008 - and is the best medal return at any Games since the 146 amassed in London in 1908.

17

It is also the first time since the modern Olympic era began in 1896 that a country has increased its medal tally at the summer Games immediately following one it hosted. Tokyo was handed hosting duties at the end of the ceremony for the next summer games in 2020. The governor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike, accepted the Olympic flag from Bach and Rio mayor Eduardo Paes, signaling the end of the 2016 games and the transition.
